Development, marketing discussed at Mayor’s Night In

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak held the inaugural Mayor’s Night In event April 26 at Town Hall. The event provides an town news opportunity for the public to hear community updates and participate in a Q&A session.

Haak addressed economic development, infrastructure, parks and the police and fire department’s new employees.

“It’s going to be a busy summer,” Haak said.

“We’re spending more money this year than we ever have.”

Construction on the new town hall building is progressing and move-in is scheduled for October. The Creekside Corporate Park sign is up and the park trails officially opened April 27.

Zionsville was selected as a finalist in Little League’s search to relocate the Central Region Headquarters.

“We think that would be a huge win for Zionsville,” Haak said. “Three weeks out of the year on ESPN they’ll be saying ‘live from Zionsville, Indiana.’”

The Q&A portion was dominated by two topics: parking and marketing. Multiple Main Street shop owners voiced concerns about the lack of available parking spots, especially during construction when company trucks occupy spaces or new restaurants open without adding parking.

They also discussed the lack of community marketing, saying that there is very little support of small business owners from the

town and Chamber of Commerce. This comes after two Main Street staples announced in recent weeks they will no longer have storefronts: Earth Explorer Toys, which is going out of business, and Inga’s Popcorn, which will sell its goods at Ballerinas and Bruisers and online.

Shop owners suggested including brochures at each business, updating maps to only include current businesses and using those tools to market the entire Zionsville community rather than a specific business.

Haak said the town does not have a marketing department, so there is very little money available to put toward marketing, but he wants to increase that budget.

The second Mayor’s Night In will be held in the fall.

The recruits will graduate from training May 25 and report for duty June 1.

to discuss the purchase of land for town uses and to ask the Zionsville Plan Commission to consider rezoning three properties in the Village.

What happened: The council voted to require the Zionsville Plan Commission to consider rezoning three properties in the Village area. .

What it means: The parcels at 125, 165 and 235 W. Sycamore are zoned B2 and B3, but Town Councilor Josh Garrett said a VBD zoning could be more appropriate. He said he’s talked to many nearby residents who are concerned about what could be allowed there. Recently, the site has been proposed for the 200 West mixed-use development, which is on hold.

What’s next: The plan commission is expected to discuss the issue at its May 15 meeting.

What happened: The council voted 5-1 to approve a resolution that funds the down payment and 2017 monthly installments for the land contract purchase of the Rail Trail Gardens property. It also funds minor improvements.

What it means: The town is purchasing two parcels of land on S 875 E that are expected to be the future home of the streets and parks departments. Currently, they share a 31,000-square-foot building with the Zionsville Police Dept. The town’s general fund will be used to make the $757,000 purchase. Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro said one of the residential buildings on the 13-acre site could be converted into a home for the Zion Nature Center.

Upgrades under way at Lions Park

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Little League is making two major enhancements to Lions Park that will improve the fields for little league baseball and softball players. ZLL, with the help of the Lions Club and the community, wants to raise $25,000 by May 15 to help fund the upgrades.

One project is to improve drainage. Fields are impacted each year by water draining from nearby Eagle Creek. The project will improve how water is drained throughout the park, increase player safety, reduce game cancellations and delays and improve the appearance of the fields. The project is expected to improve the conditions for all the fields in the park, especially Fields 6, 7, 8 and 9.

The other project is the replacement of Field 1 dugouts. The structures, including the roofs, have been damaged by water flow and natural freeze and thaw cycles.

The dugout replacements were an unforeseen expense and not a budgeted capital improvement project for 2017. The cost of the project is approximately $10,000.

ZLL President Mike Reinbold said the dugouts had become structurally unsound. ZLL has been forced to demolish and repair the dugouts with the new ones expected to be complete by early May. The drainage project will not begin until after the 2017 season.

Reinbold said the projects will not affect access to the park or interfere with the baseball or softball schedule. The drainage project will be complete before the Fall Festival.

“We’re just hoping to continue to provide a safe, fun atmosphere for our players and coaches,” Reinbold said.

Agricultural robots to compete

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Agricultural communication solutions company airBridge will again host the agBOT Challenge, a competition science open to entrepreneurs and university teams who work to create autonomous vehicles that can perform agricultural tasks.

“These vehicles have different robotics components,” said Rachel Gerrish, director of operations at airBridge and a Zionsville resident. “Last year, we challenged the teams to perform seeding in the field. The machines would not only drive autonomously but plant in the field as well.

The seeding competition will return this year, and Rockville-based airBridge has added a weed and feed contest.

“The machines are going to be able to go into the field, identify weeds and then make the decision to what the plants need.

If it’s a corn plant, is it time to feed it? If it’s a weed, how do we want to eradicate it? Chemically or mechanically? It makes that decision on its own and then performs that task,” Gerrish said.

Show celebrates 25 years of gourds

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Indiana Gourd Society will hold its 25th annual show May 5 and 6 in Lebanon.

The event will feature competition competitions, classes, sales and more for enthusiasts of all ages.

“First of all, we’re going to tell you a lot about gourds,” said Pat Moore, the 2017 show chair. “Some people don’t even know what a gourd is. They don’t know what you can do with them other than making birdhouses.”

Gourd-based items that will be on display — besides birdhouses — include decorated bowls, jewelry, purses and more. Judges will vote on first- through fifth-place winners in 77 categories.

Carmel attorney and longtime IGS member Bill Freihofer is planning to enter a long handle dipper gourd that he carefully guided to grow with a knot in it.

“It’s something that keeps my curiosity up, trying to get a product that I think will compete well at our show,” Freihofer said.

Log minutes, miles in challenge

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Bike Challenge will return May 16 to June 26, giving families and individual bicyclists the opBICYCLING portunity to see how many minutes or miles they can log in six weeks. This year, organizers are encouraging new riders to participate.

“We really feel like we’ve refined the process for the challenge. We noticed our beginning riders are growing. It’s a system that is working, so this year the focus is trying to bring in new participants,” said Matt Dickey, Zionsville superintendant of Parks and Recreation.

Dickey is encouraging Zionsville residents to get more physical activity and said one way to do that is through biking.

“There are many studies saying physical fitness is lacking in the U.S. Most of us, myself included, don’t get enough daily exercise. Biking is a great low-impact workout, and there are different types of bikes for different fitness levels,” Dickey said.

He said getting started can lead to people using bikes to commute.

like it, then they can do a lot of different things,” he said. “We hope we can reach out to new riders or people who rode as a teen before they got a car. It’s a way to commute for work or fun for families.”

For added fun, participants can join either the Dow Agro Sciences Team, the Zionsville Community Team or Zionsville Triathlon Team, who sponsor the event. Last year, Mayor Tim Haak participated.

“We hope he can participate again this year,” Dickey said.

Zionsville man prepares to run 40th consecutive Mini-Marathon

The Zionsville resident has racked up 510.9 miles as a participant in the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, completing each 13.1 mile race for the past 39 years. The only race he missed was the inaugural one in 1976.

“I missed the very first one because I didn’t know about it,” Leonard said.

He was 11 years old at the time.

Leonard is training for his 40th consecutive Mini-Marathon, set for May 6. He’s celebrating the milestone by fundraising for the Fresh Start Recovery Center, a residential addiction treatment center run by Volunteers of America of Indiana.

The center allows mothers to live on site with up to two children age 5 and younger, which sets it apart from other recovery programs.

“I’ve (fundraised for) two men fighting cancer in the past,” Leonard said. “It’s a nice opportunity to find a cause that helps women out, since I have three daughters.”

Leonard wants to raise $4,000 for the Indianapolis center to help it expand. More than 100 women are on its wait list. He is accepting donations for Fresh Start Recovery Center at bit.ly/raise4000.

Only 10 people have run the Mini-Marathon more times than Leonard. They are members of the Alumni Club, and all of them are planning to run again this year.

Leonard knows he can never say he ran all of the Mini-Marathons, but he wants to keep his streak going for a long time.

Sabrina List, vice president of marketing for the 500 Festival, is impressed by all of the runners who come back decade after decade.

“They are some of the most inspirational, dedicated individuals that we know, and they are the reason we do what we do,” List said. “To be able to commit to something and do something for 40 years is remarkable. They make our job well worth it.”

The start line

Leonard, 52, began running when he was a 10-year-old kid growing up on the northeast side of Indianapolis. A neighbor inspired him to try competitive running, so he joined the track team at school. He signed up for his first Mini-Marathon in 1978 as an eighth-grader at St. Lawrence Catholic School.

Forty years later, Leonard has enjoyed watching the race grow. In 1978, less than 1,000 people participated, and the course started in downtown Indianapolis and ended at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year, organizers are expecting about 35,000 participants, who will still run around the 2.5-mile IMS track but start and end near

2017 Mini-Marathon participants will experience many of the aspects that have made the race famous through the years: running around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, finisher medals and a big post-race party. But runners also can expect a couple of new features, too.

Meb Keflezighi, an Olympic medalwinning marathoner, will be positioned between miles seven and eight at the IMS to encourage runners as they tackle one of the hardest parts of the course.

“He wanted to find a way that he could interact and engage with participants,” List said. “His goal is to high-five just about everyone who goes past him. He’ll be there rooting for everyone.”

Runners also will receive encouragement from soldiers stationed on a Kosovo military base who will run in a “remote Mini Marathon” April 29, List said. Organizers will make the experience as similar to the Indianapolis event as possible, complete with the same shirts, medals and more.

“We’re doing everything we can to recreate this experience with them,” List said.

The soldiers will record video messages that will be played for MiniMarathon runners as they cross the start line.

“They’re all fun,” he said. “I like the way the community comes out and supports the runners. There’s always a lot of people cheering you on.”

Leonard frequently trains on the Zionsville Rail Trail, running 20 to 30 miles a week. By day, he works as a sales account executive at Innovative Integration, an Indianapolis company that supports his lifelong hobby and 2017 fundraising goal.

Leonard’s wife, Erin, and three daughters, Colleen, 21, Claire, 18, and Annie, 16, also have completed Mini-Marathons. This year, Erin and Colleen plan to participate.

Leonard said he runs more for the fun than the competition, and his goal at this year’s Mini-Marathon is to finish in less than two hours.

“I was more competitive when I was younger,” he said. “Now, I’m more proud of my consecutive streak than my (finish) time.”

Practice makes perfect

Commentary by Terry Anker “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” inquired a visitor to New York City looking for the famed music venue. “Practice, practice, practice” said the man on the street, misunderstanding her need for geographic coordinates from a cartographer rather than work-ethic advice from a smart aleck.

Still, he made a good point.

If we ever hope to move from audience to stage, hard work is key. Sure, talent figures in. Certainly, accomplishment requires a bit of aptitude – and a connected relative can’t hurt.

But for most of us, the overwhelming majority of us, in fact, success demands hard work.

So, if practice is the undisputed linchpin required to get us from a spot in the balcony to one at center stage, why do so few of us think about it? As youngsters, we practiced everything. But as adults, we might call what we do a practice (medical and legal, among others), but seldom do we commit to two hours after a day’s work to improve our game. It makes some sense.

Practice leads to mastery. Most of us don’t continue to work on the multiplication tables we learned as kids.

But, aren’t there things that we’ve yet to master? Aren’t there things in our lives that would benefit from a bit more practice?

Famed tutor to Alexander the Great, Aristotle, said, “We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” If this is solid coaching to someone who came to be known as “The Great,” isn’t it good enough for us?

Winter mess, outrageous joy never change Commentary by Ward Degler We’ve done it for 36 years — had the family Easter celebration at our house.

The crowd size has ebbed and flowed like the tide. This year we plain talk had 65.

Everybody brings food — lots of food. My contribution has always been a turkey on the grill and a special Latvian version of sauerkraut.

Easter Sunday itself is a joy. How could it not be with that many people asking where I keep the paper towels or if we have any more ice? The day starts with Mass, followed by charcoal on the grill, followed by breakfast consisting of whatever I can grab between the grill and the kitchen.

The tough part of Easter has always been the week before. That’s when I take on the devastation that winter has bestowed upon our yard and gardens.

Sometimes this happens while winter is still bestowing.

I have mowed the lawn wearing a parka and heavy mittens. I have waded through ankle-deep water while keeping a sharp eye open for sharks. Even when the clean-up is done the house may be a drifting island in a sea of mud.

Still, people come bearing food. The middle generation makes a big deal out of hiding dozens of plastic Easter eggs,

and the youngsters, shrieking with delight, charge across the lawn toting baskets in their hands.

Egg hiding has always been a special project. Years back we put names on the eggs and everyone had to find their own.

One young nephew had to shinny up a tree to retrieve his. Another finally gave up after a lengthy search. I found it the next week with the lawn mower.

As the crowd grew we abandoned the names and put numbered slips of paper inside the eggs. Each number corresponded to a prize. When the hunt was over, the games were on with flying Nerf Balls, plastic missile launchers, model airplanes and water pistols. We banned the water pistols forever after too many of the wrong people got soaked.

The egg tree is too big to climb now, and the kid that had to climb it now has grandchildren of his own. Girls and boys have grown into men and women, and a whole generation of new youngsters have flooded the scene.

It’s changed a lot in 36 years. Except for the winter mess, of course, and the outrageous joy everyone brings to the table.

Every year we have a blowout Kentucky Derby celebration at our house, and every year, in anticipation of said humor party, we run around like maniacs finishing DIY projects begun in October and taking a half-hearted stab at spring cleaning. I’m reminded of the 1982 film “Poltergeist.”

Two weeks out, life seems to be going along per usual, but as we approach the first Saturday in May, strange things begin to happen. My children start disappearing, one to her best friend Lisa’s, another to his room at the end of the upstairs hallway. And the youngest, whom I’ll call Carol Ann for this piece, is literally nowhere to be found. I can sometimes hear her highpitched voice at night, coming from the walls ... or wait, maybe the TV, but I can never seem to locate her.

With a couple of days to go, my husband Doo and I aren’t sleeping much. Terrifying questions prey on our sanity: Will we suffer another ham-tastrophe reminiscent of 2011? Why have only 15 percent of our guests RSVP’d? It’s not unusual for us to hallucinate chairs set up in odd formations and bottles of Maker’s Mark mysteriously floating through the air. So I call in professional help.

The Maids arrive in force, wielding strange high-tech probes they call “vacuums” while assessing the paranormal activity of filth in every room. Our domestic predicament is declared “legit” and the exorcism begins. Hours later, having located Carol Ann ensconced in a “Gossip Girl” marathon on Netflix and sanitized the home against future bacterial possession, they depart, announcing, “This house is clean.”

Doo and I can only hope they’re right.

Mint juleps only go so far in taming a party poltergeist. Peace out.

And that’ll be $6 for ambience Commentary by Dick Wolfsie We spent this past week in New Orleans with our friends John and Jane Murphy. If you have any plans to visit humor the Crescent City, I submit the following warnings regarding the French Quarter, the hub of all tourist activity.

During our first evening’s dinner, a threepiece combo played jazz. The restaurant tacked on a $6 cover charge per person for the music. “Wait a second,” I said to the server, “we came here to eat and talk. We didn’t even know about the music.”

“You were in the same room as the music,” the waiter said, impatiently.

“I’m also in the same room as a $700 bottle of Lafite Rothschild at the next table. But I’m just paying for my Diet Pepsi,” I replied.

The next night, we went to a popular spot that served awesome rolls. I mentioned to the waiter we were missing our bread plates.

“We don’t provide those,” he informed us.

“We encourage you to enjoy the bread. We’ll tidy up your mess.”

“Are you saying this because you know we’re from Indiana?” I asked sarcastically.

“Don’t feel bad,” the couple next to us said. “We’re from Kentucky, and we didn’t even get utensils.”

Mary Ellen was clearly uncomfortable as I tore into the warm rolls, leaving evidence of my sloppiness all over the table and floor. I quickly hid the butter knife before she could insert it into my thigh.

In busy restaurants, there is no checksplitting allowed. John and I wanted to outwit the system. I stated to our server that even though we were sharing a table, we had just met this other couple out on the sidewalk, and therefore we required separate checks. She didn’t fall for it. Now, John and I were even more determined to circumvent this bizarre policy.

The next night, our food at Café Amelie was outstanding, and this time the Wolfsies got our own check.

“Well, I must admit, your plan worked,” Mary Ellen said, sarcastically. “But I wonder where the Murphys are having dinner?”

Inga’s making a business shift

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Inga’s Popcorn will close its Main Street storefront July 1 and sell its popcorn online and at nearby retailer Balstrategy lerinas and Bruisers.

“Business is not going to control me, I’m controlling the business,” said Inga Smith, the popcorn company’s owner and namesake.

“It’s a bold decision,” she said. “I love my store. I’ve poured my heart into it.”

But the changing retail landscape with more people shopping online has prompted the need to “reinvent the business,” according to Smith.

“Step back to move forward,” she said.

“Commerce is changing.”

Smith said youth shopping habits are requiring business owners to reimagine how they sell their product.

“You’ve just got to figure out how you can live in that future, and that’s what we are doing,” she said.

“Steve has graciously and generously offered space in his shop to give people a place on Main Street to find the popcorn,” Smith said.

She will still be popping her product at her Bloomington store and will continue to sell popcorn at the Zionsville Farmers Market, which opens May 13. The Bloomington store will continue to sell the same products currently available at Inga’s Popcorn in Zionsville.

Smith opened her Main Street storefront in 2013 after selling at the farmers market for two years.

Caplinger’s to open in Whitestown

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Andrew Caplinger wasn’t looking to open a third location of Caplinger’s Fresh Catch.

NEW BIZ “I had zero interest at this point,” he said. “I had a call with a representative for a property in Whitestown who said he had the perfect space for us. I told him I would come and see it, but again, zero interest. I was just going to educate myself on what was out there and available.”

But when Caplinger saw the property in Whitestown’s Marketplace at Anson that was previously home to Gandolfo’s Deli, he was “blown away.”

“It was going to be really easy to turn into a Caplinger’s Fresh Catch. It even had some of the colors that matched the Shadeland store and lots of other little things that made me starting thinking, ‘Maybe,’” he said.

That “maybe” became a “yes” after he talked to his wife, Courtney, and dad, Nick, who also are part of the business.

can seat 78 inside and another 20 in the outdoor patio area. But there’s room to add more, Caplinger said.

The menu will stay about the same as other locations. Caplinger is trying to pare it down to be more efficient during busy hours, but customer favorites such as the “lobsta” roll and the Caplinger’s Special will be available. In addition, a market with fresh fish and seafood, along with other items such as Caplinger’s smoked seafood spreads, will be available to buy and take home.

“We get deliveries every single day, so if

there is something you want, then call me a day ahead. If it is in season and available, I will bring it in the very next day,” Caplinger said.

The response to the Whitestown location has been unlike anything Caplinger could imagine, he said.

“Now that we have been around a few years and people are really starting to know who and what Caplingers is, to see the response to just the little piece of paper in the window saying it was coming soon was overwhelming in a great way,” he said.

As for what’s next, Caplinger said he’s in talks to possibly be a part of the project going into the old Coke plant on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis.

“They are putting together something pretty amazing,” he said. “It’s probably a year and a half down the road, which makes it a lot more feasible for us. So we hope that works out.”

The Whitestown Caplinger’s Fresh Catch will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It will be closed on Sunday and Monday.

Crowe’s foundation will continue

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Cindy Crowe is moving to Florida, but her foundation will continue in Indiana.

Crowe created the NONPROFIT Birds Be Free foundation three years ago to work with women in recovery from substance abuse or those who have suffered from domestic violence.

Crowe owned As the Crowe Flies, a Zionsville hair salon, spa and boutique, 58 N. Main St., for 21 years before selling it to Rio Sharrow-White in January. Crowe retired March Crowe 1, and a retirement party was held April 28 for the salon’s customers at the Royal Run clubhouse in Zionsville.

Sharrow-White, a 2009 Zionsville Community High School graduate, will continue to support the foundation by selling product lines that will be rebranded No Label and will give 10 percent of sales to the foundation.

“The idea is not labeling addicts or people with a past,” Sharrow-White said.

She will still take donations for the foundation and help with placement into halfway houses.

Like Crowe, Sharrow-White said she has a passion for helping women in recovery.

Crowe said she has a heart for women who were incarcerated because of a family member spent time in prison.

“I grew up with an alcoholic mother, so I wanted to give back to women who were using to understand the impact they were having on children,” Crowe said.

While visiting a family member, she learned how many inmates don’t get visitors or letters. So she started a pen pal program with the Boone County Jail.

“I usually write seven to 12 letters a week to differSharrow-White ent women in jail,” Crowe said.

Crowe has given more than 20 makeovers to women after their release from jail.

Crowe is in the process of selling her house and moving to Punta Gorda, Fla., where her husband took a job.

“When I move to Florida I’m going to be continuing to work with women in recovery,” Crowe said.

Crowe said she is starting to write a book called “How I Found My Beautiful.”

Facts on skin cancer Commentary by Cecelia E. Schmalbach

Fact No. 1: Melanoma is a leading cause of death.

There are two classifications of skin cancer: melanoma (which can aggressively spread throughout the prevention body) and non-melanoma (basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, which responds to treatment fairly well and has a lower rate of spreading). Melanoma is often a result of an intense sunburn. Just one sunburn in your entire life puts you at greater risk for melanoma. On the other hand, non-melanoma skin cancer is often a result of cumulative exposure to the sun over time, such as occurs with prolonged outdoor activities and professions.

Fact No. 2: All skin tones can get skin cancer.

Although fair-skinned people are more likely to get skin cancer, those with darker skin can develop the disease as well. Anyone can get a sunburn, which increases the risk for melanoma.

Fact No. 3: Tanning booths increase your risk.

Many believe that if they get a “baseline” tan from a tanning booth, they will not burn as easily when they go on vacation.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support that theory.

Fact No. 4: Prevention and early detection can save your life.

When outdoors, cover up. Stay in the shade, wear wide-brimmed hats and use sun block of at least SPF 30. Try to avoid being in direct sunlight during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You may have heard about the ABCD warning signs of skin cancer (Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation and Diameter), but equally important is to be vigilantly aware of E: Evolution, or change.

Trauma kits for Whitestown police officers, stocked with everything from bandages to tourniquets, aren’t new. But officers now a have another tool to help keep them safe. It’s called public safety CELOX-A, and it’s designed to help stop bleeding from gunshot and stab wounds until medical help arrives.

“I wanted to give my guys one more tool in the toolbox to be able to survive a knifing or a shooting,” WPD Chief Dennis Anderson said.

CELOX-A is a blood-clotting agent. The difference between it and blood-clotting packets found in most trauma kits is that it is delivered via a syringe into the wound.

“You actually probe with a finger to see how deep the wound goes and then insert this into the bottom of the wound and then start applying it from the inside out versus outside in,” Anderson said.

Officers trained on the procedure in late April. They learned how to apply the CELOXA and wrap the injury using part of the syringe so it is clearly visible to ER staff.

“The ER docs seem to like it. It is easily flushable with saline solution so it doesn’t hamper anything as far as taking them to surgery,” Anderson said.

The one-use syringe costs $21. Every Whitestown officer, 24 full-time and nine reserves, carries it. The medic ambulance also is stocked with three syringes of CELOX-A. “I try to be very proactive with our agency and making sure our guys have everything they need to survive a major encounter, and this is just one more thing to have,” Anderson said. “I certainly don’t want to look a family in the face and say for $21 your husband or wife would still be here today.”

Heartland Big Band finds home at Theater at the Fort

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Heartland Big Band has settled nicely into its new home.

The jazz band, which previmusic ously played at Madison Park Church of God in Anderson for several years, made its first appearance at Theater at The Fort, 8920 Otis Ave., in Lawrence in May 2016.

“We wanted to grow the audience base and felt Lutterman there was an opportunity and need to grow it in Lawrence,” said Randy Greenwell, secretary of the band’s executive board.

The band will perform a tribute to George Gershwin, called “Gershwin by George!” at 7 p.m. May 5 and 6. It’s part of its “Swingin’ at the Fort” concert series.

Scott Lutterman, the artistic director, said there will be an 18-piece band with two vocalists, Quentin Beverly, a Lawrence Central High School graduate, and Kaitlyn Williams.

“We’ve just completed our first successful year there,” Lutterman said. “We’re going to continue through another season through 2019.”

Lutterman, a Zionsville resident, said the band has been together since 2004.

“We have professionals from all over central Indiana, mainly from Indianapolis and surrounding areas that make up the band,” Lutterman said. “Most of the guys are in music and make their living playing.”

The band has set itself up as a nonprofit.

“We operate just like symphony bands do, like the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra,” Lutterman said. “We have a board of directors. We have a funding plan. We have a concert series. Instead of focusing on the classical music, we focus on the big band music to try to make that a venue for people that like big band music.”

This is the band’s fourth of five concerts in the 2016-17 season. There are six concerts planned for the 2017-18 season.

There will be a rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue” in big band-style.

“I like any of the music in the big band idiom,” Lutterman said. “Any time we can feature a Great American Songbook musician, we do. We also do Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael.”

“We’ve certainly done his music quite a few times,” Greenwell said of Gershwin. “It certainly has an interest because it’s such a great part of the American Songbook. It’s usually a pretty popular concert for us.”

Teaching still a passion

For Randy Greenwell, it was the perfect way to bow out.

After leading the Lawrence Township band in the Rose Parade in January, he retired after 24 years as director. Lawrence Central and Lawrence North merged high school bands three years ago. Greenwell led the Lawrence Central band into the 2005 Rose Parade.

Greenwell, 55, spent 32 years as a teacher, including 24 years at Lawrence Central. He guided the Lawrence Central Marching Band to four Indiana State School Music Greenwell Association state titles and nine runner-up finishes. He took a job with Conn-Selmer as educational support manager for the central region. Conn-Selmer, headquartered in Elkhart, is the leading manufacturer and distributor of musical instruments for student, amateur and professional use.

“I think it was time for a change,” said Greenwell, a Pendleton resident. “This is affording me the opportunity to do a lot of clinic work. That’s why I’m excited about the opportunity with Heartland to be able to work with high school kids and offer them opportunities to pursue their love for performing jazz music and giving them an opportunity and another outlet aside from their regular school situation. This gives me the opportunity to still serve in a teaching capacity of some sort without being a full-time teacher, which is nice.”

Greenwell said the band is in the process of developing an educational series to help reach out to school kids and give them opportunities to work with professional musicians.

“We’re going to try to do All-State Band with high school youth in the area and bring in a guest artist to perform with them,” he said. “We’re also going to attempt to do a side-by-side concert similar to what the ISO (Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra) attempts to do with its side-by-side (program). We’d have kids audition, and they have the chance to sit in with the band.”

Greenwell plans to propose some dates at an upcoming board meeting.

“It’s tough because you don’t want to interfere with school programs, so finding the best dates is going to be a challenge,” Greenwell said.

O’Connor to make Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra debut

“It will truly be an enchantO’Connor ing experience to hear her perform Wagner’s intense ‘Wesendonck Lieder.’ Fans of Kelley will be pleased to learn she’s already slated to return next January.

The Golden Horn is a horn-shaped estuary that flows into the Bosporus Strait separating European and Asian Istanbul.

Until recently, the Golden Horn was home to slaughter houses, foundries, factories and shipyards, creating a polluted waterway and an unattractive shoreline. In the late 1980s, the Istanbul government began demolishing the industrial buildings and replacing them with parks and museums. Miniaturk, one of the largest miniature parks in the world, opened on a 15-acre reclamation site in 2003.

Miniaturk includes 1:25 scale models of important architectural works from areas

once controlled by the Ottoman Empire.

The more than 125 miniature reproductions include about 45 from Istanbul, 45 from the rest of Turkey and the remainder from other areas, including Israel. The most interesting of the miniatures are interpretations of two lost buildings considered in antiquity among the Seven Wonders of the World: The colonnaded temple to Artemis in Ephesus that was demolished by a Christian mob in 401 after Emperor Theodosius I outlawed paganism, and the tomb of Mausolus, the source of the word “mausoleum” and the architectural inspiration for the Indiana War Memorial, which was destroyed by a series of earthquakes in the Middle Ages.

Visiting Miniaturk is not a substitute for actually exploring the historic structures of Istanbul. But as an introduction to Turkey and the glory of the Ottoman Empire, it is worth a couple of hours.
