Mundy looks forward to life after politics

“The things I won’t miss are the complaints by the very small minority that are unwilling to take a broader view,” he said. “Those that refuse to see that the world is changing and what we did yesterday may not work today or tomorrow, I won’t miss that. But all that is pretty minor.”

Mundy’s last council meeting will be in December.

“But you’ll probably still see me attending meetings if there’s an item I am interested in,” he said.

Dispatches Essay contest winners – The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple announced the winners of the 2014-2015 National Heritage Essay Contest. The theme of this year’s essay was “What Freedom Means to Me.” Reagan Frank, Riverside Intermediate School, Fishers, was the first place winner. Second place went to Chelsea Lo of the Orchard School in Carmel.

Third place went to Channing Christian of Zionsville, a student at Park Tudor.

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Town Council president has decided not to run for re-election. Steve Mundy, who first joined the countown council cil in 2010, has decided to step down and enjoy retirement through travel, volunteering, fishing and other hobbies.

“While I won’t miss every aspect of the role, I will miss most of it. I have enjoyed getting to know so many talented and giving people here in Zionsville,” Mundy said. “In the end, I believe we all need to move on before we become an obstacle, and the clock stops for no one.”

Mundy – who retired from a career in human resources at Eli Lilly in 2001 – returned to Zionsville after having moved several times during his career. He and his wife’s intent was to spend time doing the things they couldn’t during his working years.

“Our children were grown, my wife and I both had lots of interests and many things we wanted to do while we were still able and healthy,” said Mundy, who has served with Meals-on-Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, St.Vincent’s Hospital and other organizations.

Mundy’s road to the town council started during his time as president of his homeowner’s association. During a voluntary annexation into Zionsville, he became acquainted with the local town council members at that time. Once the annexation was complete, Mundy was asked to serve on the Zionsville Plan Commission. Four years later – when there was a resignation on the town council – he received a call asking if he’d be interested.

New Kroger store – Zionsville will be home to one of four new Kroger stores announced April 29 as part of a huge expansion planned in central Indiana. The Zionsville Kroger will be at 116th St. and Michigan Road. On April 29, Kroger announced its strategic capital investment plan for central Indiana, which exceeds $464.6 million and is expected to create 3,440 jobs by 2017. Other new stores are planned in Greenwood, Indianapolis and at a location yet to be announced.

Vectren replacing natural gas pipelines in town

By Michelle Williams • news@currentzionsville.com The pipes that carry natural gas through the heart of Zionsville are getting an upgrade. Vectren is working to replace bare steel cast iron transmisutilities sion pipelines with polyethylene pipes.

Polyethylene is the new industry-grade material, and Vectren is installing it across its service area to ensure continued integrity.

Zionsville is part of a large, multi-year project in which 1,300 miles of Vectren’s infrastructure is being replaced.

In 2015, Vectren will retire .4 miles of bare steel cast iron pipe in Zionsville, and more than 4.4 miles will have been replaced in the town since 2008. This work is currently underway and impacts about 70 of Vectren’s customers.

In addition to pipeline replacements, Zionsville projects slated to begin mid-May include the retro-fitting of a 16-inch transmission pipeline that runs for 8.6 miles through the town. After the work that will replace the valves and 90 degree elbow joints with rounded ones, this particular learn more pipeline will become “piggable.”

The Zionsville Police Department is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to host the seventh annual public safety Teen Academy June 8 through June 12.

Officers will instruct participants in several topics including traffic stops, internet usage, identify theft, special response team and character development. Participants will also tour the jail and “role play” along with classroom training. The session will officially conclude June 26 with a luncheon to present certificates.

“Last year was the sixth class for this event. This was our largest class so far with 30 participants,” ZPD Capt. Jeffrey Morris said.

“We have had exceptional response from students and parents of the participants of our Teen Academy. We are looking for this year to be the best class to date.”

The purpose of the ZPD Teen Academy is to help teens better understand police officers in their community and to strengthen the relationship between the police department and the community.

Show honors late guitarist

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com It had been many decades since The Bounders had played in Zionsville when they performed their 50-year reunion music show in December 2013. That show will remain their last.

Bill Langley, lead guitarist, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer shortly after the reunion and died last June.

But The Bounders’ music and Langley’s legacy will live on at a memorial show to White be performed by Don White, guitarist and vocalist for The Bounders and Langley’s lifelong friend.

“I hope [audience members] remember Bill and how much he loved music and the great musician that Langley he was,” White said. “I also hope they can appreciate that time in their lives when we were young and enjoyed the music.”

Four students from Zionsville High School formed The Bounders in 1963 and played together for about four years after high school, but then Langley moved to Texas and then Florida with his family.

nected and talked every night on the phone,” White said. “We talked about everything from music to hell. I thought it would be nice to do a show in memory of him.”

The memorial show will take place at 7 p.m.

May 8 at the Zionsville American Legion, 9950 E. 600 S. It is free to attend, although the Legion is hosting a steak and catfish dinner beforehand that is separate from White’s event.

While he plays solo, White will have Langley’s guitar on stage to display. None of the songs he plays will have a lead guitar break, because that is what Langley did during concerts.

“He’s no longer with us, so that part of the music will be left out in memory of him,” White said.

White said there’s no set time for the length of the show. He will play until he can’t play anymore, which should be at least two hours of music.

I’m thinking about trading cars. My beloved old SUV has more than 200,000 miles on it, and it’s beginning to rust.

Plain talk “It still runs well,” I told a friend, “but with that many miles, it’s only a matter of time.”

As I said those words, I had a sudden flashback. It was 1953 and my dad was looking under the hood of our 1950 Ford.

“It still runs well,” he said, biting his lower lip, “but with that many miles, it’s only a matter of time.”

He was serious. The family bus had just turned over 24,000 miles, and he knew it was time to trade. He was so afraid it would conk out before he could get it to the dealer that I was no longer allowed to drive it on Friday night dates. Obviously, I thought it was time to trade, too.

Cars were different back then. We traded every two years. Except once a few years later when unexpected expenses dictated keeping the car longer. Horrified, Dad watched the odometer on his aging three-year-old Buick turn over an unheard of 25,000 miles.

He started riding the bus to work rather than risk a breakdown. The car sat in the garage for weeks, and we talked about it in whispers as Dad flipped the calendar pages, planning a new trade-in date.

Even though we kept cars for only two years, we loved and pampered them. We in-

stalled curb feelers that kept us from scraping the white wall tires against the curb while parking. We added fender skirts and an outside sun visor over the windshield. Then, since the visor kept us from seeing the traffic lights at intersections, we installed a handy optical device on the dash that let us see upward in front of the visor.

Then, to make sure the upholstery would still look new when we traded the car, we covered the seats with clear plastic seat covers that we ordered from the Fingerhut company in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Some dealers even offered free seat covers with a new car. I guess they thought clean upholstery would help the resale value when the car was traded in.

Then, almost overnight cars changed. Unibody construction eliminated rattles. Refined engineering extended engine life. Radial tires and rack and pinion steering improved road ability. We started keeping cars longer.

A few weeks ago a guy in town was showing off his vintage 1950 Ford. It looked new. I asked him how it ran.

“Still runs good,” he said, “but with this many miles, it’s only a matter of time.” The odometer showed 26,000 miles.

Overcoming the odds in India Commentary by Dr. Sally Brown Bassett After years of traveling to Rishikesh, India, the yoga capital of the world, and staying at an ashram, I felt philanthropy somewhat like a local.

Early morning yoga followed by walks along the Ganga River is an explosion of sensory overload. The sights, sounds, smells and tastes are only unique to India.

One year I heard about an American woman, Prabha, who had founded Ramana’s Garden as a home for destitute children. The directions took me on a 30 minute walk over bridges and through winding streets. There I found a magical odyssey on the side of a hill overlooking the river. There were approximately 60 at-risk children living there and more than 160 students total at her school.

There are fond memories of meeting this dedicated and forceful American woman for the first time. It was fascinating to learn she had lived there more than 20 years as a result

of her spiritual practice on the banks of the River Ganga. On a shoestring budget, she has for years been providing children with education, nourishment and a future where previously they had little or no hope. Like me, she hates the word ‘no.’ Our barriers in the U.S., however, are a far cry to the challenges she has had to face in a developing country to achieve what she has.

Prabha says she tries to live her life from a quote by Ramana Maharshi. “You must do social service by relieving suffering whenever you see it. You must help the child as a means of worshipping God in that child.” Wise words put in action by a wise woman.

Singer inspires PVE students

DREAM THE FIRST STEP IN CREATING A NEW EXPERIENCE

He’s entertained crowds across the globe and has won numerous honors, music but he considers his work with children the most important thing he’s ever done.

“I’m a singer and songwriter. I love to perform,” Gailmor said. “But as far as changing the world, this is how I’m going to change the world through the kids. It’s been inspiring.”

Gailmor, who lives in Vermont, spent two weeks in April working with Zionsville’s Pleasant View Elementary students in different grades. Gailmor helped students write and perform humorous songs that they presented at shows for their parents.

Pleasant View music teacher Rebecca Hampton was delighted to host Gailmor.

“Jon’s work with our students was nothing short of magical,” Hampton said. “The students were able to take complete ownership and pride in their songs even in just two short sessions with Jon. It was so fun for me to watch how his unique personality and perspective drew such creativity from all our students.”

sees a school emphasizing music, adding he hates that money for the arts have been dwindling in the schools.

“Sometimes the arts are the first thing to go, which is criminal,” Gailmor said. “Without music we’re all less human.”

Pleasant View third grader Madi Huffman said she enjoyed writing the songs the most.

“He’s a really good artist, and he inspires me to learn more about music,” Huffman said.

“I think that helps them trust me more and opens them up to reciprocate,” Gailmor said.

Postcards provide a glimpse of the past

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Zion Park, Big Eagle Camp, Zionsville High School and a street car on Meridian (now Main) Street are a few of the library many images depicted on about 100 historical postcards on display at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library.

The exhibit will culminate on May 9 when Harley Sheets, the owner of these and more than 20,000 other postcards, will provide free appraisals and a presentation about the history, value and collectability of postcards beginning at 2 p.m. at the library.

The Lebanon native and co-author of “Tiger Basketball: A Lebanon Passion” is sharing his collection amassed over 25 years so that others may find an interest in a hobby that he enjoys.

So how does one start such a collection?

“It was totally by accident,” Sheets said.

The hobby began while he was trying to collect a photograph of every high school in Indiana. Sheets assumed yearbooks were the easiest route until a dealer in an antiques store pulled out boxes of postcards that included images of many high schools.

fast enough to pay that lady,” he said.

After joining and being president of the Indianapolis Postcard Club, Sheets wanted to help others become as passionate as he was.

“When I first got into postcards nobody wanted to educate me so they could get my good cards for nothing,” he said. “So I’d give these presentations at libraries to educate people on postcards.”

Sheets said that modern day postcards

hold no value, but older postcards that were stored in family albums are the ones to preserve. A single postcard can be worth $100 to $200.

As for his original goal, he estimates that he’s obtained postcard photos of roughly half of the high schools that have ever existed in Indiana and doubts that he will ever find all of them.

“But it started me out on a great hobby,” he said.

Town wants bike-friendly environment year round

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com May is celebrated as National Bike Month throughout the country, but the town of Zionsville is hoping to soon be recognized for its efforts to promote bicycling cover story year round.

In June, the League of American Bicyclists is expected to announce its newest list of Bike Friendly Communities, a designation that Zionsville narrowly missed last year.

“We got an honorable mention, so this year with the tweaks and changes we made we’re hopeful,” said Matt Dickey, Zionsville superintendent of parks and recreation.

There are more than 300 Bike Friendly Communities in the U.S. and eight in Indiana. To earn Bike Friendly status, communities must show that they have a plan for growing and maintaining bike paths or routes, enforce bicycle safety laws and educate the public on bicycle issues, among other factors.

Zionsville has more than 18.5 miles of paved pathways that are at least eight feet wide, with additional trails in the works along Bloor Lane and CR 700 East. Other potential trails have

been identified throughout the town, but it’s too early to know which ones will ultimately be developed.

David Wefler, a founder of the Zionsville Triathlon and Cycling Team, believes the town’s existing trails are among the best in the area – but he would like to see them expanded.

“Zionsville is doing a great job, but they definitely still have some room to improve, mainly on the length of the trails,” Wefler said. “I have a one-and-a-half year old daughter so it’s great for pulling her around in the trailer.”

May events Although Zionsville seeks to be a bike-friendly town all year, the town is holding a few special events in May that coincide with National Bike Month.

The fifth annual Bike Rodeo and Family Fun Ride will kick things off May 9 with a bicycle safety check by bicycle mechanics from Nebo Ridge Bicycles at 9:30 a.m. followed by a seven-mile loop ride through five different parks along the trails in Zionsville with an optional three-mile extension to Heritage Trail Park.

is a featured stop at the end for a ride,” Dickey said.

The Zionsville Bike Challenge will offer an incentive for participants to hop on a bike from May 18 to June 28. Each week prizes are awarded and cyclists that complete the challenge will receive a free T-shirt.

The free challenge contains goals for four skill levels. The first category is family fun with riders needing to complete 90 minutes a week. The second category is the beginner level at 200 miles in six weeks, with the third level requiring 400 miles in six weeks and advanced riders needing 600 miles in six weeks.

“The concept is to get people back on the bikes or to get people new to bicycling to find more reasons to get more miles in, since everyone is trying to get in better shape,” Dickey said.

Last year more than 85 participants registered and logged more than 23,700 miles, with about 90 percent of the participants completing the challenge.

Staying safe With miles of trails that continue to expand, the Zionsville Police Department started a police bike patrol in 1997 to patrol the town’s pathways and work special events. The nine fulland part-time officers attend a police bike training course each year.

“They are a highly visible part of the police department and one which receives much recognition throughout the year,” ZPD Capt. Robert Musgrave said.

The unit recently received a grant which has allowed for much needed repairs to bicycles and the addition of two new officers.

The police bike patrol will be part of the upcoming Bike Rodeo and Family Fun Ride, and officers expect to be out on the trails daily this summer.

Your input needed As Zionsville seeks to expand its own network of trails, the Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking input on its Regional Bikeways Plan, a document that guides development and federal funding of trails and other bike routes in Central Indiana.

Lebanon and Whitestown are among other municipalities developing trails that are expected to tie into the regional system, which already includes pathways in Zionsville. The MPO is seeking feedback from the public on the next five years of the plan through an online survey at www.surveymonkey. com/s/MPOBikeways. The survey will be open through May 24.

Election Day: Make it count

You received your Current today because May 5 is the date of the primary election. We don’t want election information in the paper on election days, as delivery of Current can happen into the late-afternoon hours; that does you no good on Election Day. Today, though, you’ll find what you need to know about candidates and voting. Our staff has prepared candidate profiles, a list of polling places and other pertinent information that we hope will help you make informed decisions when you enter the voting booth. There are several hotly contested races in the communities we serve. Elections, in our view, are more about the “then” than the “now.” All the talk on the campaign trail doesn’t amount to a hill of beans if a candidate is elected and, in the course of her or his term, doesn’t follow through on promises made during so many stump speeches. It then becomes about accountability. We urge you to focus on facts and not buy in to the hyperbole that typically accompanies municipal election races, including those of mayor, council and clerk-treasurer. This is an exciting time of year, mostly because it comes around only once every four years. We don’t for a moment doubt each candidate’s enthusiasm for serving you; we just urge a closer examination before you cast your vote. And we do hope you’ll vote, because it is your right and responsibility. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 5. As we’ve said before, this is about accountability on every plane. In that vein, is the incumbent you’re considering worthy of remaining in office, and is the challenger earnest and well-founded in her or his quest? Time will tell.

Changing horses, even political ones Commentary by Terry Anker The aphorism “don’t change horses midstream” has always appealed to me.

Perhaps it reflects a general bias towards managing change carefully. Perhaps, it simply points to the scores of cowboy movies that I watched as a kid. Some of the most dangerous, and therefore exciting moments, came when my favorite stars would reach the point in the cattle drive where they had to cross the raging river. Without exception, someone or something would be swept away by the rapidly moving current.

Our communities are faced with the same decision today. Do we stay with the same plan that we’ve come to know in traveling together these last several years?

Or, have we identified enough concern about the stability and sure-footedness of our present conveyance to make a change – right now, even as the water is rushing by?

Local election years are perhaps the most important for the communities in which we live, and yet they are routinely

overlooked. Folks don’t feel sufficiently informed to make it to the polls. Or, they fail to take note of the incredible importance of primaries in elections where the slated candidate of one party is ostensibly the given victor in the fall general election. The reader of this column is likely in such a position. The vote cast in the primary will ultimately determine the upcoming general.

Vote! Vote! Vote!

As to the “horse” that we’re on, I’m not inclined to change. Like many reasonable people, I have some anxiety about the coming crossing. Our community is growing and with it comes changes, debt and uncertainty. Even if our current team is imperfect, they have made the crossing before and their behavior is predictable.

Incumbents may be the old horse; but for this trip I’m inclined to stay the course.

These days it seems I’m constantly on the edge of losing my sanity. Oblivious parents in carpool lines (pull forward, people!), pets vomiting charcoal on new carpet (long story), untamable locks that refuse to stay smooth even after intense flat-ironing (stupid red hair!) … no, it doesn’t take much for acute hypertension to set in and the obscenities to come out. But lately, the thing that’s really been chapping my rear is my children’s constant complaining about each other.

This morning for example, as I was beginning my carefully-designed “Getting Ready” routine (incorporating all things introverted including but not limited to low lights, silence, and orange-mango juice), one of my daughters barged into my bathroom with “Mommy! Maddie stole my curling iron and I got up early to curl my hair and you have to do something about her taking my things without asking and never returning them and now what am I supposed to do?”

Last night, as I actually lay in bed trying to sleep, the same kid flung open the door, jumped on the bed and said, “Mom. Can I just tell you what Andrew said to me because he is not being nice and acting just like Geoffrey saying mean things and not caring about my day and completely ignoring me and he is supposed to be my brother.”

Last week? My twins were online checking their grades, and I hear, “Maw-um! Geoffrey’s failing two classes. You’d better ground him!”

Then shortly thereafter from the youngest wails, “Corinne’s pressing my buttons! She’s rolling her eyes! She didn’t do the dishes!

She’s a big brat! She’s … ” and so on.

Where’s the love? Where’s the “I’ll scratch your back if you’ll scratch mine?” Why can’t they just love each other? I get it, I honestly do. I grew up in a house with four sisters and only one bathroom. We were constantly fighting and narc-ing each other out to our parents. But that was back before personal electronics; we had a ton of free time to fill. What better way to spend an afternoon than by plotting to bring down the spoiled four-year-old?

These days though, there’s absolutely no reason for my kids to be hating on one another.

Rehearsal space, on the road and at home Local venue helps bands prep for shows

Rick Kingston is planted in his Carmel shop seven days.

Some days he might be there 14 hours. No matter, he loves it.

Kingston’s Music Showcase, 340 Ridgepoint Dr., primarily provides rehearsal space for bands. The hours business are typically from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., but that often changes.

“We have a lot of acts at the Jazz Kitchen and sometimes those guys don’t get up until dinner time,” he said. “So they are not done until 1 o’clock in the morning. I stay until the last band is done.”

The shop also serves as musical instrument store and a concert venue. Kingston started the business and about five years ago.

“It’s been a rocket ship ever since,” Kingston said.

He moved from smaller location on Gradle Drive three years ago and then doubled the space about 18 months ago.

“We have three rooms and they’re regularly booked so we’re looking for more space right now,” Kingston said.

The store has hosted several national and regional acts in his rehearsal rooms.

“Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band was in Brussels (Belgium) one night and in here the next,” Kingston said.

Kingston said Stars in Stereo, a Los Angeles band, rented out the place for a whole day before a date in Cincinnati. The band then canceled a show in Atlanta and came back and spent another day in the shop.

“It’s hard to find rehearsal space on the road,” Kingston said.

Directions: Heat oil in a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Sauté onion, carrot and celery until onion is translucent and vegetables are tender, five to seven minutes. Behind Bars: Mom’s Lemon Drop Ingredients: Lemon wedge, for rim, Sugar, for rim, 2 ounces lemon vodka, ¾ ounce lemon juice, ½ ounce simple syrup, Lemon peel, for garnish Directions: Rub the lemon wedge over the rim of a martini glass to coat it with juice. Fab Four show mirrors real Beatles

The Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band, will perform at The Palladium at The Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. on performance May ?. Doug Tatum, the center’s vice president of programming, discussed the popularity of the groups.

With all the Beatles tribute bands, how do you determine which one to schedule?

Whether it is classical, jazz, country or rock/ pop, the center’s goal is always to present the very highest quality attractions available, regardless of the particular musical genre.

So while there certainly are multiple Beatles tribute bands that are available and touring, after just a bit of research, it really does not take too long to determine which of those bands are in the top tier, and thus, which ones are under consideration for the center to present.

Is there anything that makes The Fab Four stand out or set them apart in your view? I know the Fab Faux was at Palladium in 2013.

You mentioned The Fab Faux – with that great band it’s all about recreating the music; they make no effort whatsoever to resemble the Beatles physically. With The Fab Four, the quality of the music still comes first, but they also don the costumes to recreate the look faithfully, even down to the personal mannerisms of each lad from Liverpool. So in that regard, I must admit that I am also very pleased with the quality of their wigs! Seriously, in judging a group, I always ask myself the question, “Do they truly do justice to the music?” With The Fab Four, I’m happy to say that the answer is yes.

Their touring history dates back to 2001, so they have been around for awhile, but I don’t believe this group has previously performed in the Indianapolis area.

VOCE to present free concert

VOCE managing director Eric Wickens describes his chamber choir’s upcoming performance as calming Performance experience.

“Even though it sacred music or classical, I find an opportunity to kind of sit and mediate and take in the music that the group is producing,” said Wickens, a bass baritone from Fishers. “You feel some comfort and mediation from it and hopefully some joy.”

VOCE will present a free concert at 3 p.m. on May 17 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 1402 Main St., Carmel.

VOCE, which stands for Voices of Choral Excellence, is under the direction of Dr. Madlen Batchvarova, who is choral director at Hanover College. The chamber choir, made up of mostly Indianapolis-area residents, will be presenting “A Sacred Journey.”

In addition to Vivaldi’s Gloria, the program

will feature music coupled together by the same text but written by composers from different centuries and musical styles. The concert will take the audience through music of the Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic and Contemporary eras from the United States, Germany, Italy, Norway and Bulgaria.

The series is part of St. Christopher’s Music on Main Fine Art Series.

“We invite ensembles or groups, sometimes from afar but usually local groups,” said Robert Richter, the church’s music director.

Richter said VOCE performed at St. Christopher’s several years ago.

“In exchange for their performance, they have been hosting many of their rehearsals at the church,” Richter said. “Many of the singers come from north Indianapolis suburbs.”

Brenda Iaocca is a soprano for VOCE, St. Christopher’s member and Carmel resident.

VOCE has been reorganizing following the retirement of its founder Charles Goehring in 2013, Wickens said.

‘Pond’ to impress all generations

The Indiana Repertory Theatre is closing its season with a family feel-good production that promises to leave audiPerformance ences with a warm afterglow. “On Golden Pond,” a beloved Tony Award-winning play, runs on the OneAmerica Mainstage through May 10.

It tells the story of Norman (Robert Elliott) and Ethel Thayer (Darrie Lawrence) who have spent nearly 40 summers in their Maine cottage, located on the banks of Golden Pond.

But just as Norman – who’s experiencing frequent bouts of forgetfulness – starts to lose his zest for life, he receives an unexpected but welcomed visitor who turns his world upside down.

This visitor, an inquisitive and misled 13-year-old boy named Billy Ray, Jr. (Griffin Grider) challenges Norman and not only rejuvenates his love of life, but also helps restore a faded relationship between Norman and his daughter, Chelsea (Constance Macy).

I just learned something you probably knew about me already. I am a “word nerd.”

I’ve been one for decades plain talk and didn’t know it. I never heard the term until last week, when a high school classmate posted a cute saying: “Let’s Eat Grandma. Let’s Eat, Grandma. Commas Can Save Lives.”

I told her I actually have the tee shirt. She said we must both be “word nerds.”

I’m intrigued by all words, but especially by four-lettered words.

Four-lettered words do a pretty good job of describing the human condition.

Make – love – baby – born – milk – food – grow – walk – talk – grow – show – tell – play – grow – work – earn – self – pray – hope – hurt – live – free – vote – well – sick – gone –home.

And then there is that first word most of us say. In any language it sounds something like “Mama.”

Mama is an important four-lettered word.

We rarely hear it anymore in our society. It seems to be reserved for the very young and the very old. Even three-year-olds get the message that “Mama” is a “baby word” they

Too bad. It’s such a sweet word, and I love to hear it. My daughter (you remember, Rainbow) called me “Mama” till she headed off to preschool and outgrew it.

Actually, I loved the word “Mama” when I was a child. I think that’s because my mother always called her mother “Mama.” So did her five sisters and their brother.

Their “Mama” was a feisty woman. She was part Cherokee and all business. You didn’t mess with Grandma. She was a beadyeyed, determined survivor. She lived through the Depression as a widow with six children and no money.

Two of her daughters (one of them my mother) spent four years in an orphanage.

Grandma walked miles to that orphanage every Sunday. I once asked my mother how they all survived.

“That’s easy,” Mom said. “We never doubted for a minute that Mama loved us.”

“Mama,” another word for love.

For all the kiddos out there, how cool will it be to surprise your wonderful mother on Mother’s Day with this beautiful, delicious and fancy salad?

This super easy dish is the perfect menu for that special family picnic celebration.

Have fun and happy cooking!

2. Wash your hands and wear an apron. 3. Gather all your ingredients before you start. 4. Follow the directions exactly. 5. Have an adult nearby to help.

MANGO WALNUT SPINACH SALAD Serves: 6 Ingredients: • 1/2 pound baby spinach • 1 pound mixed spring salad mix • 12 ounces sliced fresh mango, you will need 1 cup cut into strips (save the rest to make the dressing) • 1 cup fresh blackberries • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, toasted Mango dressing: • 3/4 cup fresh mango • 2 tablespoon fresh squeezed orange juice • 1 tablespoon fresh squeezed lime juice • 2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon raw, honey • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Directions: Puree mango in a blender and measure 1/3 cup; then add the rest of the mango dressing ingredients (except chopped parsley) to blender and blend until well mixed. Pour dressing into bowl and add parsley. Place salad ingredients in a nice bowl and serve with mango dressing.

Mixing it up Chill out with mom this year and whip up some of these simple, sweet and savory drinks.

“Champagne Julep” Ingredients: • About 3 ounces champagne or sparkling white wine • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon • 4 large mint leaves • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon simple syrup (to taste) • Crushed ice Directions: Bunch the mint leaves between thumb and forefinger and give one good tear through the middle of the leaves. Drop into bottom of a tall Collins glass and pour in simple syrup on top, just enough to cover leaves. Muddle well.

Add ice roughly to fill glass. Pour in bourbon. Stir very briefly. If necessary/desired, put in more ice at this step to refill to top.

Top off with champagne. Once again, stir briefly. Taste and top off with more simple syrup if desired. Garnish with mint sprig.

“The Momosa” Ingredients: • 1 ounce Frangelico Liqueur • 1 ounce Fresh Tropical Cascal (fermented soda) • 3 ounces Laurent-Perrier NV Brut Champagne Directions: Combine the Frangelico and Cascal in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake. Pour into a champagne flute and top with the champagne!

Busy spring schedules can jeopardize routines for families on the go – especially when it comes to healthy eating. nutrition With kids and parents running from school and work to sports practices and events, healthy dinners often take a backseat when time is tight.

If you find yourself resorting to drive-thru and quick meal options this season, here are some tips to keep healthy choices on the menu: Avoid fried foods. While drive-thrus are convenient, fast food can be high in calories and fat. Steer clear of anything fried. Instead, look for foods that are grilled, steamed or baked. Choose plain, grilled chicken sandwiches or hamburgers, and skip the fries and soda.

Opt for a fruit cup, small salad or plain baked potato as a side dish. Low-fat milk and bottled water are good beverage choices.

Pack fresh salads. With fresh vegetables in season, salads are great on-the-go options for enjoying at the ball field. Layer pre-washed romaine lettuce or spinach in plastic containers; add vegetables like shredded carrots, cucumber and cherry tomatoes; and top with dried fruit or sunflower seeds. Drizzle dressing on the salad, secure the lid and shake. Fresh

fruit salads are another good alternative. Berries are loaded with antioxidants, and apples are high in fiber.

Make simple meals with pantry staples.

With a little creativity, you can make easy meals that are healthy too. Spread peanut butter on toasted multi-grain bagels or wholewheat English muffins and pair with raw vegetables and low-fat ranch dip. Or, make a bagel pizza with pizza sauce, reduced-fat cheese and vegetable toppings. These can be toasted and wrapped in foil for dinner on the go. Bean burritos, using black beans, whole-grain tortillas, cheese and salsa, are also easy options.

Plan ahead. If all else fails, keep your bag and car stocked with healthy snack foods to stave off hunger. Items to keep on hand include dried fruit, granola, mixed nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables and nutrition bars. For a fun healthy treat, stick a few tubes of yogurt in the freezer to grab on your way out the door the next day.

Learn to set boundaries

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Running around on empty serving everyone else only to find yourself mental exhausted, depleted and maybe even angry at the end of the day?

When clients are suffering from anxiety, depression or just general fatigue at life I often find we have a boundary problem. I like to describe boundaries as emotional fences that separate our property from the property of others. Figuring out what we should allow in our property and what we should kindly escort out of our property can be a difficult process. There are family norms and belief systems that must be challenged in order to learn to manage our emotional boundaries effectively.

Setting boundaries can be scary at first, but with practice you can find your way to a life where you are the one managing your own yard. No longer do you have to live at the expense of whatever demands wander their way into your property.

It’s helpful to follow some of these basic guidelines when learning to set boundaries:

1. Feelings of anger, rage, resentment, irritability, fear and shame are clues that we need to set a boundary.

2. When you set a boundary do it clearly.

Try to control your anger and use as few words as possible.

3. We cannot set a boundary and take care of another person’s feelings at the same time. This is key!

4. We may feel ashamed and afraid when we are learning to set boundaries. Do it anyway, it feels wrong because it is new and uncomfortable, not because it is wrong.

It’s not easy to change how we interact with others, but the rewards are often immeasurable. If this process seems too overwhelming you may want to seek the support of trusted allies or an experienced mental health counselor. Often having someone to hold our hand as we wander out into uncharted territory can be just the thing we need.

Village Kitchen opening date pushed to early June

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The restaurant was supposed to be a quick and easy turnaround – a few coats of paint and the doors would rerestaurants open – but owner Brian Avery’s initial plan grew into a bigger vision that will be fulfilled when the Village Kitchen opens its doors in June.

“It’s gone from what we thought would be a basic cafe to a breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant,” Avery said.

The building has been rewired and brought up to code. More lighting has been added.

Walls have come down and been reconstructed. Outlets have been upgraded to include USB plugs.

“It’s an old building so you have to work with what you have,” Avery said, “but we made the best of it.”

JR Reynolds of Reynolds Construction has led the remodel, which both Reynolds and Avery agree led to challenges and necessary adaptations.

When complete, the atmosphere will encourage visitors to spend time and not feel rushed.

Their most unique lunch option will be salad construction: patrons will choose from a checklist of 15 to 20 options to create a salad.

Then the staff will custom build it.

The chef, kitchen manager and assistant manager have been hired and Avery is eager to get the team comfortable in the updated kitchen. He’s still hiring some kitchen and part

time staff and would like to bring in employees with special needs.

“I’ve done that in multiple places,” he said, referring to previous restaurants. “It’s good for everybody.”

The Village Kitchen is scheduled to open June 5, but soft opening dates are expected to be announced through the restaurant’s Facebook page.

The story behind a famous ruby Commentary by Susan Schube In 1367, Edward of Woodstock (aka The Black Prince) received a huge ruby from Don Pedro of Seville in payment jewelry for a victorious battle. This gem, which is approximately the size of a hen’s egg, has been part of the English crown jewels since that time and is mounted in the Imperial State Crown, above the Cullinan diamond.

When gem testing methods were developed about 150 years ago, what was discovered, and what Prince Edward never knew, is that the “ruby” is actually a magnificent 170-carat red spinel. Until that time, spinels were believed to be a different variety of ruby, often referred to as balas rubies.

The largest deposits of spinel are in Sri Lanka and Myanmar (Burma). Spinels are bright, glittery gems (except for the black variety) and occur in many colors. These gems do not scratch easily but are prone to chipping on the girdle edge, so care while wearing a spinel ring is recommended. Spinels are usually fairly small – a 30-carat gem is considered a big stone.

Back to the Black Prince – the spinel was supposed to be partial payment for Edward’s expertise as a military leader. Don Pedro of

Seville was not particularly trustworthy and never paid the rest of the bounty. While Don Pedro has faded into history, Edward of Woodstock will always be famous for his association with a red spinel.

‘Bereft’ or ‘bereaved?’

Commentary by Jordan Fischer I heard something on the national news this week that sent me on a confusing journey of grammatical grammar guy discovery.

I’ll confess to not knowing the exact context of the statement, because there were a lot of TVs going and I wasn’t really paying attention to any of them, but I did catch an anchor say this: “… the bereft family …”

“That should be ‘bereaved,’ shouldn’t it?” I thought. And then I thought, “I can get Steve and Brian to pay me to write about this.”

Thus, here we are.

“Bereaved” is, as I thought, the accepted past participle and adjectival form of the word “bereave” – to be “deprived of a loved one through a profound absence,” especially death.

In a etymological tidbit sure to please the “Firefly” fans out there, the word “bereave” originates from the English and Scottish “reavers,” who, according to the Oxford English Dictionaries, got their name from the verb “reave” (and, more to the point, their penchant for “reaving,” or plundering, each other’s

land).”Bereft” is, Oxford says, the archaic past participle of “bereaved.”

That’s all well and good, except we still say “bereft;” its primary definition being “deprived of or lacking something, especially a nonmaterial asset.”

OK, so, “bereaved” is for those mourning the dead, and “bereft” is for those missing something nonmaterial, like humor (you know, like a Steve Harvey joke).

But, annoyingly enough, Oxford still includes a second definition for “bereft:” a person “lonely and abandoned, especially through someone’s death or departure.” Come on!

My two cents: “Bereaved” is specifically used when you are deprived of a loved one, through death or otherwise, so let’s keep it that way. “Bereft” can be used for other situations, like a wall with no decorations or chili with no noodles (It’s just not the same! I’m looking at you, Texas.).

After the Western Roman Empire collapsed in the late fifth century, the Eastern Empire remained a center grammar guy of culture and learning. When Justinian I became Eastern Emperor in 527 A.D., he set about adding to the grandeur of his capital in Constantinople, now called Istanbul. The magnificent church of Hagia Sophia was one of many enduring achievements of Justinian’s reign. Another was an underground reservoir built to supply water to what was then the world’s largest city, with a population of 500,000.

Reportedly built by 7,000 slaves, the Basilica Cistern, named for its location under the Stoa Basilica, is 453 feet long and 212 feet wide. Its 30-feet high ceiling is supported by 336 marble and granite columns arranged in 12 rows of 28, with each group of four columns supporting an arched cross vault. With 13-feet thick brick walls covered with water-resistant mortar, the reservoir could store more than 21 million gallons of water. The water, transported via

aqueduct from a forest near the Black Sea, was distributed to Constantinople palaces and other buildings through a series of pipes.

The varying capital styles suggest that the columns were spoliated from pagan temples around the Empire. Two columns in the northwest corner are supported on stone pedestals bearing the carved image of snakehaired Medusa, one upside down and one on its side. Some believe these orientations were intended to cancel out the effects of Medusa’s petrifying gaze, but exactly why such mythological features were placed in a structure commissioned by a Christian emperor remains a mystery. Another column bears an image of eyes and tears, said to memorialize the slaves who died during construction.

The Basilica Cistern was rediscovered in 1545 A.D. when people in Istanbul were observed fishing though holes in the ground.

Getting the perfect retro-fit deck Commentary by Randy Sorrell The immediate decision fueling an incredible outdoor living space is imagining what the actual living Outdoor living surface will be. The typical “default� response is a brick paver patio. But there are plenty of other sexy materials and textures to consider. Often, the physical location will strongly influence the material palate, especially with elevated spaces.

RETRO-FIT The featured deck is a fantastic example of that. It’s unrealistic to construct a paver patio 12’ off grade. So, a new deck is born ‌ or, re-born. Retro-fit best describes this incredibly livable space. The previous pressure treated pine decking was tired and pleading to be replaced with something fresh. The sub-structure remained.

We considered all the alternatives from premium pressure treated pine, cedar, composite / synthetic materials to ipe, a beautiful / insanely expensive Brazilian hardwood. The cost structure can guide that decision and is listed above from least to most expensive.

Maintenance costs are a prompt cost equalizer, however.
