Name: Lori N. Schein Age: 47 City: Zionsville Occupation: Attorney, currently deputy general counsel at the Indiana BMV Years in county? I have Schein lived in Boone County since 2001. I previously resided in Boone County from 1995 to 1996 before moving to Indianapolis.

Why do you want to run for elected office? I am running for the position of Circuit Court Judge because I want to make a positive impact on our community.

What is your previous political experience? I have no previous political experience and this is my first campaign. However, I am a graduate of the Lugar Series, a women’s leadership program, and I am the former secretary of the Boone County Republican Party.

What are your top priorities if elected?

My top priority is to run an efficient and fair court with an emphasis on being firm with habitual criminals. I will participate in community discussions related to the opioid epidemic and I will use the position as judge in any way I can to help stem the crisis of drug abuse in our community.

What are the biggest issues facing the Boone County residents that your office can impact? The biggest issue is the ongoing opioid crisis. We need to get tough on habitual criminals who are in and out of our jails and who are distributing and abusing these drugs.

What changes do you hope to bring about if elected? I would like to continue working with our local schools to address drug problems with children and to emphasize greater and earlier education to young people on the dangers of drugs. I would like to bring back a Teen Court as an effective problem-solving court for young people. As a judge, I would hope to work with other elected officials and community leaders to address the opioid crisis.

I have been a family law attorney for 17 years and I want the bench to continue to be respected and to have a judge that is well-versed in family law issues.

What is your previous political experience? I ran and was elected to serve as the Lebanon City Court Judge. I was the last Lebanon City Court Judge, as the court was closed by the City Council.

What are your top priorities if elected? As a judge, my responsibility is to apply the law to the facts of a case and render a fair decision. I will do that in any case in which I serve as judge.

What are the biggest issues facing Boone County residents that your office can impact? As an attorney, I have worked with numerous families that are affected by: 1) one or both parents having a felony on their record; 2) the use of illegal substances; 3) divorce; 4) children born out of wedlock; 5) guardianship issues; 6) grandparent visitation; 7) college issues, and; 8) almost any other legal issue that a family may have to face. These are the issues that affect the most Boone County residents.

What changes do you hope to bring about if elected? A judge is limited in bringing about change. But, as judge of the Boone Circuit Court I promise that I will treat everyone who comes into that court with respect, courtesy and as a person who has the potential to make a positive contribution to our community in Boone County.

One of the areas where the Circuit Court Judge can have the most impact in the community relates to the court’s involvement with our community’s children and their families in both juvenile delinquency cases and child in need of services cases. I have seen firsthand, as prosecutor, where the Circuit Court Judge’s involvement with the families and children involved in these cases has had a positive impact in their lives and in turn on our community What changes do you hope to bring about if elected? I don’t believe bringing about “change” is a big part of my candidacy for Circuit Court Judge. I can say this about change, though, Boone County will experience a great deal of change over these next five to 10 years and during this period of change I will do my best to represent the people of Boone County as their Circuit Court Judge.

Noel painting stolen from home

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com A Nancy Noel painting owned by a Zionsville resident has been stolen, according to the Boone THEFT County Sheriff’s Office.

The painting, “Two Hounds in a Field,” was reported missing from the Hunt Club and Traders Point-area home March 25 by the owner, who is offering a $1,500 reward for information.

“Obviously, it’s a rare picture,” said BCSO Det. Jason Reynolds, adding that details about the theft have been posted to the BCSO social media page.

Zionsville Rugby team seeks growth spurt

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Seamus O’Neal has a benefit his fellow Zionsville Rugby teammates don’t have.

O’Neal started playing the SPORTS sport in seventh grade when he was in Malaysia.

“All my friends started playing it,” O’Neal said. “It’s really big over there.”

O’Neal lived in Malaysia for nine years before his family moved to Zionsville before his junior year. He is in his second year with a team of Zionsville Community High School players.

Zionsville coach Larry Shiller wishes the program had a middle school feeder system.

Shiller co-founded the Rugby Indiana high school program in 2003 and has been the head coach ever since. There have been a couple times since the high school program started that there has been a middle school program, including when Shiller’s son, Aidan, was in middle school.

“We need more people to get involved to have a feeder system,” Shiller said. “We don’t have that pipeline of players coming through, so it’s hit and miss. To be a good single side, you need 25 players. We have 22 this year. Once you subbed out, that’s it,

you can’t come back in.”

Zionsville competes in Division I, the middle level of the three high school divisions.

The team won the Division II state title, a smaller division, in 2010.

The team plays against other high school teams, but it is not an Indiana High School Athletic Association-sanctioned sport.

“There are a lot more experienced players in Malaysia, and it’s a lot more physical,” said O’Neal, who played basketball as a junior but has concentrated on rugby this season.

O’Neal suffered a concussion once in rugby.

“But I’ve been injured more in other sports than I have in rugby,” he said. “If you go about tackles wrong you are going to get hurt. If you use the right form that coaches teach you, it’s fine. It’s a lot safer than football.”

Senior Matthias Einterz, who also wrestled and played rugby all four years and played football his first three years, got interested by watching his older brother Joseph play rugby his final three years at ZCHS. “A rugby tackle is much more like a wrestling take-down than it is a football tackle,” Einterz said. “Working on form in wrestling helps with rugby.”

Shiller said approximately 16 percent of the players have gone on to play at the college level or higher.

Whitestown forms committees

By Maria Cook news@currentzionsville.com The Whitestown Human Relations Commission, which advises various town departments on matters DIVERSITY of diversity, recently established two new committees: an LGBTQ+ Study Committee and a Mediation Committee.

According to Human Relations Commission Resolution 2018-01 and 2018-03, the LGBTQ+ Study Committee will be tasked with “seeking community input on the needs of the LGBTQ+ residents of the town of Whitestown” while the Mediation Committee will work to “informally resolve complaints of the community in an effort to resolve matters prior to formal complaints being brought to the Human Relations Commission.”

Andrew Markle, president of the Whitestown Human Relations Commission, said that some data collected by the LGBTQ+ Study Committee will help “determine whether or not we should provide more

education for a minority group within the community, as we do with others that are under our protection in the comprehensive Human Rights Ordinance.”

According to Whitestown Director of Public Relations Tanya Sumner, the Mediation Committee hasn’t handled any complaints or conflicts yet. “(The Human Relations Commission) thought it best to have a mediation process in place just in case a complaint of discrimination is filed,” she said.

As for community response to the formation of the committees, Sumner expects it to be largely positive.

“Community reaction to the creation of the Human Relations Commission has been extremely positive so far. In fact, many of our residents have commended us for being so proactive and forward-thinking for a town of our size when it comes to diversity issues,” Sumner said. “With Whitestown’s rapid growth and our changing demographics, I think it’s great to make sure all of our residents and all segments of our population feel represented and heard.”

ZPD K-9 Eso dies

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Retired Zionsville Police Dept. K-9, Eso, died April 22. Eso served the agency from 2013 until his retirePUBLIC SAFETY ment in June 2017 because of health problems.

A 7-year-old Czechoslovakian shepherd, Eso was the first dog to join ZPD after it revived the K-9 unit in 2013. Eso served with officer Wayde Knox, who moved to an outof-state agency, before partnering with Sgt. Brad Kiefer as his handler.

Eso was euthanized April 22 after suffering multi-organ failure. Kiefer reported Eso became ill during the weekend and began experiencing seizures. Keifer and his children were with Eso during his final moments.

“It’s heartbreaking, especially for the handler and the handler’s family because the dog lives there with the family,” ZPD Chief Robert Knox said.

A dual-purpose K-9, Eso assisted in handler protection, trafficking and narcotics detection.

Knox extended his condolences to the Kiefer family and spoke to the dedication K-9s have to their handlers.

The Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees awarded a $3.2 million bid to Trane, an HVAC supplier, EDUCATION for updates to the HVAC temperature control system throughout the district.

This is one part of the 2018A and 2018B bond projects the board discussed in January. The 2018A will fund renovations of the HVAC equipment and temperature control system at the secondary schools, and the 2018B will be allocated to the elementary schools.

Bids for the project went out in February and were separated into two categories, one for mechanical updates and the other for temperature controls. Victor Landfair, vice president of The Skillman Corp., said the first category received only one bid, so he recommended rejection of that bid and requested a re-bid for more competitive prices. The second category, temperature

“Eso was such a good fit, a beautiful animal,” Knox said. “He just contributed so much to the agency.”

Eso was purchased from Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind. The department has two other K-9s in service: Jelka and Thor.

Knox said Eso was a great partner to Kiefer and good member of the agency.

“We’re going to miss him,” he said.

The first category will be re-bid this month.

Chief Operations Officer Rebecca Coffman presented staffing recommendations to the board after discussing enrollment predictions for the 2018-19 school year. The board approved the addition of 23.58 full-time equivalents to the staff, including one additional assistant principal at each middle school. The district anticipates 187 new students next year.

To meet the needs of increased enrollment, Chief Financial Officer Mike Shafer received approval to purchase new school buses for a little more than $250,000.

The board also approved the adoption of new K-12 instructional materials, a list that is shorter than previous years because of more refined research and free online materials, and the purchase of new Lenovo computers available for student rental.

My wife and I watched a rather moving film the other night. “Kodachrome” stars Ed Harris as a famous phoPLAIN TALK tographer who is dying of cancer. He convinces his estranged son to drive him across the country to the last Kodachrome processing plant so he can get four forgotten rolls of film processed before the plant shuts down forever.

Kodachrome film was a highly stable color reversal film that produced slides with vivid color and accurate images. It was introduced by Eastman Kodak in 1935 and was universally considered the best film for four-color magazine production. It was the only film used by National Geographic photographers.

Kodak stopped producing Kodachrome in 2009, and the last processing plant shut down in 2010 after years of waning sales and the exponential rise of digital cameras.

Kodak continued to manufacture Kodacolor, a color negative film most recently popular in instamatic throw-away cameras.

We used both Kodachrome and Kodacolor at the Naval Photographic Center when I was there in the early 1960s. We processed

our own Kodacolor, but farmed out our Kodachrome processing. I understood why when I saw the processing equipment used for Kodachrome. Let’s just say it was enormous and complex, and the chemistry was strictly Ph.D. stuff.

Our Navy photographers and lab technicians were trained at the Eastman Technical Center in Rochester, N.Y., — a part of Kodak — and some of them earned Kodachrome credentials. We studied the feasibility of adding Kodachrome to our menu of services but concluded the process too rich for our military blood.

At the end of the movie, the dying photographer made a profound observation. He said photographers become photographers to stop time. “We are preservationists who commit moments to eternity … human nature made tangible.”

Images caught on film will endure forever. Something digital photos, unfortunately, can never do.

Mini-Marathons help Zionsville woman overcome near-fatal accident, cancer

While driving to a Notre Dame COVER STORY football game in 1969, Haun was involved in a near-fatal car accident and suffered serious injuries, including broken bones in her face and a broken back. She had to breathe through a tracheostomy and her mouth was wired shut.

Because Haun didn’t know when she would recover, Eli Lilly terminated her employment just weeks after she was hired — a devestating blow for someone who lost her father at age 5 and mother at age 16. “(I suffered from) the emotional loss of my parents, and then the job loss and now my identity was totally lost,” the Zionsville resident said. “You couldn’t recognize me.”

Haun, 67, found her identity again through running.

She will participate in her 35th 500 Festival Mini-Marathon May 5.

Fighting back

After a year of surgical procedures and learning to breathe, talk and walk again, Haun developed a passion for running when she met Bill Gavaghan, an avid runner who finished second in the first Mini-Marathon in 1977 and qualified for the Olympic trials in 1980.

Mary Gavaghan, Bill’s wife and a friend of Haun’s since fourth grade, said Haun constantly asked questions about running and watched her husband compete.

“She thinks that Bill inspired her, but really she was self-motivated about it,” Mary said.

Haun was re-hired at Eli Lilly in 1970 and later began running with her co-worker, Jan Caito, whom Haun credits for the inspiration to run her first Mini-Marathon in 1982. Haun and Caito trained daily and finished the race in 2 hours and 6 minutes.

“I wanted to prove to myself that I was back,” Haun said. “Also, in gratitude and appreciation, I wanted to be able to do this.”

Haun has missed only one Mini in the last 36 years.

Regaining balance

In 1996, Haun was unable to participate because of breast cancer surgery. She was given a 55 percent chance for 5-year survival after completing treatment, which she said were eight to 10 times stronger than normal. She went through chemotherapy, radiation and a

stem cell transplant.

“I didn’t understand how you could do that to somebody’s body that is already sick, and then how do they recover?” Haun said. “It’s nutrition. The body has to rebuild and repair, and that wasn’t part of what was being offered to me.”

She sought help from Dr. Dale Guyer of the Guyer Institute of Molecular Medicine. Guyer is a family doctor who specializes in holistic medicine, including acupuncture, supplements and regenerative treatments to restore balance to the body.

“What I’ve seen is if you couple the nutritional therapies with various nutritional supplements and things like that, the toxic effects of (conventional) treatments are way less,” Guyer said. “People feel better. They’re more functional. The side effects are a lot less, but also the outcomes are a lot better.”

Haun utilized several nutritional supplements and IV vitamin therapy, which is an infusion of vitamins and minerals that boost the immune system and allow it to work more efficiently.

Haun completed the traditional treatments on April 25, 1997, and remained determined to participate in the Mini on May 3, 1997. Her doctors would not allow her to run, but she could walk. Haun has walked the Mini every year since.

“I look at what has happened (as a sign) that (God) has more work for me,” she said. “My calling hasn’t ended.”

Haun left Eli Lilly in 2002 to attend Trinity School of Natural Health to become a certified natural health care professional. For the last 15 years, she and her husband of 40 years, Dave, have operated a wellness center out of their home in Zionsville.

“I am trying to create a business that didn’t exist that I wanted,” she said.

Haun plans to eventually offer the center to businesses and organizations for team-building and conferences.

Commentary by Terry Anker There are some things we do once in a while. We eat ice cream. We take long naps.

Each is good, even great, in its own way.

They punctuate our lives with small respites of joy. They remind us that life is firmly ours to control – as much as we try to convince ourselves that we have precious little over which we can fully direct. Yet, there are other things, maybe even more things, that are a committed part of our daily ritual.

We do them at the same time, in the same way, and with the same approach each and every day, for decades at a time.

We brush our teeth. We tie our shoes. We look one last time in the mirror before turning out the light and heading out the door.

What we expect to see is unknown, even to ourselves, but we must do it. Without the simple action, the ritual would collapse. It is the step we take, every day, before departing our homes. Failure to complete the task could be disastrous – well, maybe not, but why risk it?

So, of these many quotidian sacraments, which are worth preserving? Of the thoughtless and habitual actions moving us from one morning to the next, are we squandering our effort on those of little consequence? Is it time to review our ceremony and consciously decide which adds value and which to dump? Sure, most dentists agree that the intentional hygienic process of cleaning one’s teeth should stay on the list. But, as we review our own peculiarities, is it less clear as to the import of our other lesser daily actions? If we spend a minute a day for decades, or perhaps a lifetime, can we feel good about the market’s return on our investment?

LEGION LOOK Give tribute on Armed Forces Day Commentary by Rick Baum The month of May is Military Appreciation Month, and that brings opportunities for citizens to display patriotism throughout our community, state and nation.

Each year, Armed Forces Day is recognized on the third Saturday of May. This year’s Armed Forces Day is May 19 and will give Americans an opportunity to pay tribute to all men and women in uniform serving the U.S. as your Guardians of Freedom. This salute recognizes all branches of military service.

President Harry Truman’s signed proclamation stated, “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, toward the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea and air defense.” That year’s theme was “Teamed for Defense.”

President Truman’s proclamation was signed following World War II’s fierce battles, and at the threshold of the brutal Korean War. Americans celebrated the

first Armed Forces Day with parades, open houses, receptions and air shows.

Do you know someone serving in the armed forces to protect your peace and liberty? Show your appreciation by communicating how much you value their devotion and sacrifice. Send care packages to their unit while deployed. Invite them for a meal when they are home on leave. Your encouragement builds muchneeded morale.

I survived my first prom dress shopping experience! With my oldest daughter, that is (back in 1989, I’d searched for months before discovering a specHUMOR tacular off-the-shoulder taffeta number with puff sleeves that perfectly complimented my magnificent bangs). She’s attending “the big dance” next week, and as most of you already know, it’s all about the dress.

She had ideas about length and color, and of course, I had ideas about cost and cut.

Anything over-priced or too revealing would be off the table. “I’m not spending hundreds of dollars for you to look like a lady of the night!”

After navigating the jungle that is Macy’s for 10 minutes, we found the juniors section. She went left, I went right, and we reconvened with nine potential winners between us. “To the dressing room. Away!”

Holy, moly. My daughter rocked every single one she put on. Navy, burgundy, satin, chiffon, sequined, plain, it didn’t matter.

Stunning. I don’t know why this surprised me, but it did. I’m so used to seeing her making weird faces in leggings and a ratty T-shirt that I don’t think of her as a beautiful young woman. And the self-confidence!

Does she care her acne’s flaring up? Or that she takes after me in the small-chest department? Nope, not in the least. She stood in front of that mirror like a runway model, strong and fierce and gorgeous.

I’m happy to report we left with an onbudget, age-appropriate dress that she adores. And not only did I survive the experience, but I truly enjoyed the time with my daughter. Yay, prom!

Managing meditation stress Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My sister meditates and claims it makes her feel like another person. She has a small apartment in New York, so I HUMOR hope there is enough room for everybody.

Meditating must be working for Linda because she once sent me a recipe with directions like: • I tbsp of chili sauce (DO NOT USE KETCHUP!) • I cup of whole milk (ABSOLUTELY NOT SKIM MILK) She was a little on edge back then, but now when I ask for one of her famous recipes, I get things like: • I tsp of butter (unless you prefer olive oil — just go with the flow) • 2 oz of sour cream (yogurt would be more wholesome, but use whichever tastes better to you) I wanted to learn how to meditate. I sent my wife a text to see if she also was interested. When Mary Ellen got home she was really upset. “We’ve never been happier.

What brought this on?” My text said it was time for the two us to try mediation. Darn spell check.

To begin my journey, I got a book called “How to Meditate: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Mind,” by Pema Chodron.

Pema’s book begins with this quote: “Our life is an endless journey: Meditation allows us to experience all the textures of the roadway, which is what the journey is all about.”

Obviously, Pema has never driven in Indianapolis, because any journey here is all about avoiding potholes.

The book uses expressions like: The principal of newness; having a naked heart; getting closer to yourself; scanning your body; tasting your emotions. Way, way too new age for a guy in old age.

Now, I’ve downloaded an app called Headspace to walk me through some meditation exercises. My sister thinks this will make me a less material person. Linda is wrong about that: I’m a humorist … so the more material, the better.

New ‘Bud’ flourishing

When Zionsville Flower Co. owner Brian Davies retires in a few months, his customers will be left in the hands FLOWERS of longtime Marsh florist Joellen Maker.

Maker opened her own shop, From Bud to Blooms, in August and will take over the Zionsville Flower Company name while staying at her 40 East Poplar Street location, where Bud to Blooms began.

“This was a dream of mine, and now I’m passing it off to her because it’s her dream as well,” Davies said. “Joellen is very excited to take her background and knowledge and learn more.”

On April 1, From Bud to Blooms acquired Zionsville Flower Company’s reverse osmosis water system to ensure the same flower care that customers have experienced.

“I want (Davies’) customers who already know him to expect what they’re receiving,” Maker said. “I just want to sell some flowers and do a good job.”

Maker was at Marsh’s Michigan Road store for 17 years, leaving temporarily to work for a wholesaler, where she connected with Davies. Selling flowers to other florists wasn’t

as enjoyable, so she returned to Marsh.

“I want to sell flowers that I’ve made with my hands,” she said.

When Marsh closed, Maker planned to continue her flower-arranging job out of her home until her husband, Bruce, spotted a location off of Main Street.

She particularly enjoys creating large arrangements but also sells 17 varieties of orchids, hand-picked at a specialty grower.

Although she looks forward to the business expanding in the future, the Makers plan to stay in downtown Zionsville.

“We’ll always maintain roots here,” Bruce said.

A PITCH-PERFECT FIT: Anne Weidner tunes up Miami Misfitz

By Heather Collins editorial@youarecurrent.com Anne Weidner, a Zionsville native, is in perfect harmony with Miami (Ohio) University’s all-female a cappella group, Miami Misfitz.

EVENT The organization was founded 15 years ago by Zionsville Community High School and Zionsville Middle School drama director, Mikayla Koharcik.

Weidner has been a key part of helping forge the Misfitz into a premier Weidner musical group.

Weidner describes Misfitz as a driven and classy group of women who perform any genre of music for the purpose of bonding and giving back to the community through performances on and off campus.

The group competed in the 2017 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCAs), made famous in the movie “Pitch Perfect,” and placed third. The group also released its second album, “Soul Revival,” in November 2017. The album has been nominated by the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, popularly known as the Grammys of a cappella, for “2018 Best Female Collegiate Album.”

After the release of the group’s first album, “Fitz,” in late 2016, Weidner was selected as a nominee by the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards for “2017 Best Collegiate All-Female Arrangement.”

Weidner served as music director in 2016 and 2017.

This year, Miami Misfitz has been nominated for seven campus awards, including Organization of the Year. Weidner was nominated for Student Organization Leader of the Year.

The group, consisting of 12 members, covers a variety of genres, including punk rock, folk, R&B, country, soul and pop.

“There’s a certain level of sass,” Weidner said. “We’re definitely a spark when we walk into a room.”

Weidner first heard of the group in middle school. Koharcik, a ZMS drama director and language arts teacher, was a founding member more than 15 years ago.

Koharcik directed Weidner in her seventhand eighth-grade play.

Koharcik said Weidner is her first former student to be a part of the group and is the third member from Zionsville. Koharcik said Weidner’s arrangements are beautiful.

“I’m beyond proud of her and what she’s done for the group,” Koharcik said.

Weidner said she enjoyed leading the group as music director and connecting with all the women through music.

“I have been so blessed by my Miami experience and have been so blessed by the Misfitz,” Weidner said. “They’ve shaped who I am today. They’re an electric group of women with full hearts for each other and for music.”

She said the friendships she’s made through the Miami Misfitz will last a lifetime.

“I’ve never met a more diverse group of

girls,” she said.

After graduation, Weidner plans to move to Chicago and pursue a career with West Monroe Partners, a business management consulting firm. She said she also wants to perform at local jazz piano and a cappella bars.

Academically, Weidner is an honors student with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. She has been on the President’s List all seven semesters and will graduate in May with degrees in business, psychology and music.

Mark’s take: Let’s talk about burgers, shall we? Better still, let’s talk about Burgerhaus, a great restaurant for gourmet burgers. The menu features an impressive list of burgers with an array of toppings.

Not in the mood for a burger? No worries, appetizers, salads and other entrees are available. So, enjoy a meal at a hip, stylish eatery with friends, family, co-workers or all the above. It’s a great dining experience.

What to get: For first-timers, I recommend the Haus. This one is closest to a traditional burger with a lot of room to

experiment. I chose the chipotle Monterey for the cheese, with lettuce and tomato and served on a pretzel bun. Have a craft beer to wash it down.

Behind bars: I’ll Have Another Get it at Chiba, Westfield Ingredients: 2 oz. bourbon, .5 oz. Barrows ginger liqueur, .5 oz. sweet and sour, .3 oz. club soda, mint leaves, lemon wedges.

Directions: Muddle mint leaves with lemon, pair all ingredients with ice and shake thoroughly. Pour into a Tom Collins glass and garnish with mint.

Sauvignon blanc for springtime Commentary by Elizabeth Morse Sauvignon blanc is a great choice for warm weather. It’s a green-skinned grape that originated in WINEderlust Southwest France. Like any grape, it takes on nuances of the soil and environment where it’s grown. Thus, sauvignon blancs from different parts of the world do vary in color, taste and body. My favorites tend to be described by terms like: fresh, crisp, aromatic and elegant. Usually, sauvignon blanc is both food-friendly and sippable, making it smart to have on hand in case of impromptu entertaining. I’ve got three to suggest. Two are the same price, but stylistically different. The third will be a splurge.

First up is Loveblock Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 ($19). In full disclosure, New Zealand wine is normally not my favorite, but it is wildly popular. It tends to be too stylized for me. This option is from a famous NZ maker, Kim Crawford, and is a great choice. The wine shows off big ole’ grapefruit flavors, typical of the region, without being too over-the-top. It boasts a successful blend of lemon, lime, fresh thyme and passion fruit

flavors. Yum. Second is a pretty French selection, Domaine de la Perriere Sancerre, 2016 (also $19ish). Almost green in color, it has perfumed aromas of white flowers and peaches. In the mouth, it is citrusy, minerally and a tiny bit smoky. This wine is a great choice with salads, asparagus or white fish.

Merry Edwards has been one of my favorite American (and female!) winemakers for many years. Her wine is great. All of it.

The Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 is $39 a bottle and worth every penny. Always highly-rated, it is a blend of 70 percent sauvignon blanc and 30 percent sauvignon muscat. Golden in color, it smells like nectarines, apples, pineapples and quince.

Mouthwatering and bright, think tangerines, candied citrus, pink grapefruit.

Syria’s historic Jaabar Castle Commentary by Don Knebel A castle in northern Syria has a rare distinction – it figured in battles during the Crusades and in the recent SyrTRAVEL ian civil war.

The Jaabar Castle, known in Arabic as Qal’at Ja’bar, is atop a hill about 25 miles west of Raqqa. Since the seventh century, the hilltop has been fortified to guard a crossing point on the Euphrates River that connected Raqqa with the west.

The first castle on the site was built by local Bedouins in the early 11th century and came under the control of the Ugaylids, a Muslim dynasty, in 1086. Members of the First Crusade, who captured Jerusalem from the Muslims in 1099, gained control of the castle in 1102. The site was recaptured by Muslim forces in 1147. Nur al-Din Zangi, who succeeded in uniting Muslim forces against the Crusaders, rebuilt the castle beginning in 1168 to help hold the surrounding territory against future Crusades. The restored castle included an oblong stone wall 1,210 feet by 560 feet, protected by 35 bastions and a

dry moat. Many of the structures of Jaabar Castle, including a circular minaret, were constructed from mud bricks. Although the castle was extensively damaged by Mongol raids, the minaret has remained intact.

Beginning in 1968, Russia built the Tabqa Dam across the Euphrates River just east of Jaabar Castle. As a result, the hilltop on which the castle rests is now an island in Lake Assad, reachable by causeway. In 2014, the so-called Islamic State gained control of Jaabar Castle, using it as a training facility and making threats against the Tabqa Dam. In January 2017, Syrian forces recaptured Jaabar Castle. In May 2017, forces supported by the United States recaptured the Tabqa Dam, leading to the liberation of Raqqa, which the Islamic State claimed was its Syrian capital.
