Zionsville among finalists for Little League HQ

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com For nearly four generations, Zionsville has had a strong Little League history. A host of players have passed through SPORTS Lions Park since the charter was established in 1953. Now, Zionsville wants to expand on that legacy. It is one of five finalists for the new home of Little League International’s Central Region Headquarters.

“We have one of the largest and oldest Little League charters in the state. Baseball is ingrained in our community,” said Mike Rinebold, one of the chief organizers in the effort to bring the headquarters to town.

“That really was on display last year when the high school baseball team made it to the state finals. Half of that team played Little League. It’s just the fabric of Zionsville.”

Other finalists include Grand Park in Westfield, Plainfield and two sites in Illinois near Chicago.

Zionsville started working on its proposal last fall. Rinebold and others traveled to Warner Robins, Ga., which landed the Southeastern Region Headquarters in 2008 after it moved from Florida.

“My conversation with their CFO made me believe they would be a good model to follow,” Rinebold said. “It was a great day, and we really learned a lot.”

“We worked with the Boone County Economic Development Corp., the chamber, the convention and visitor’s bureau, the town council, the schools — all of the community players are a part of this,” Rinebold said.

Landing the Central Region Headquarters would not only be a win for Zionsville and Boone County and its communities, but for northwest Indianapolis, Rinebold said.

“It would be drawing from that region, not just the Zionsville community, even statewide, really, when you talk about the volunteers needed to run that type of tournament,” Rinebold said. “We are talking about 5,000 spectators for one week of baseball and one week of softball, all here.”

Althought it would be a boon for the community and surrounding areas, it’s the kids Rinebold said who will benefit the most.

“With our numbers in Little League, 700 to 800 boys and girls every year in baseball

and softball, we are bursting at the seams in Lions Park, and that is with nine fields,” he said. “This would give us four more fields that we would have full-time access to and control year-round. And the fifth one would be the stadium field with 2,500 seats and a hill in the background that can hold another 2,000 to 2,500. Can you imagine growing up with that in your back yard?”

Lions Park would continue to be a part of the mix, however.

“Nothing changes. They and Little League are bound together,” Rinebold said.

A site visit by Little League officials will happen in May or June. The winning city will be announced in November. The first baseball and softball games would be played on the new fields in August 2019.

The Zionsville Plan Commission unanimously approved a development plan April 17 for a Tom Wood Toyota DEVELOPMENT dealership on 9.8 acres at 6408 Crane Dr., south of Cracker Barrel and just east of I-65.

Last month, the commission delayed a vote on the project to allow time to gather more information. Commissioner Larry Jones said he was still not satisfied with the updated plans, which include changes to landscaping, drainage and the relocation of a dumpster.

Jones said residents in the nearby Royal Run neighborhood might be upset if they learned that the dumpster had been moved from the plans originally presented. He expressed concern about the noise generated on trash pickup day.

that are a big irritant to the adjoining residents but a small portion of what you’re trying to do,” he said. “We’re looking out for the residents.”

Paul Kite, speaking on behalf of petitioner John Wood of Zionswood, LLC, said the dealership is not seeking any variances or asking to do anything outside the norm.

“A certain amount of noise is to be expected,” Kite said. “We’re not having any outdoor

music or an outdoor PA (system). It’s just a business operating on a GB-zoned piece of property.”

He also said the dealership wants to be open by the end of the year for “competitive reasons.”

“The Tom Wood organization wants this done as soon as possible. Now that they’ve committed to make the move, it needs to get going,” Kite stated in an email. “We want to make sure we’re among the first to service this area. I’m not certain who might be looking other than I’ve heard that other land owners have been approached recently.”

Jones joined the other commissioners to approve the plans along with a set of commitments that include keeping a tree line on the north side of CR 650 S, permanent removal of a portion of CR 650 S and installation of a new curb, no exterior paging or speaker system and the reorientation of the dumpster.

The Zionsville chapter of Tri Kappa will host its fourth Savor, Sip and See fundraising event at 6 p.m. May TRI KAPPA 6. Attendees raise money for the community while browsing local shops and sampling food and drinks along Main Street.

Savor, Sip and See is a progressive dinner down Main Street with options from 18 retail shops and 18 restaurants, including Noble Order, Salty Cowboy and Flamme Burger. There also will be a beer tent and live music.

The event is split into three time blocks: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for appetizers, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for small plates and 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for desserts.

Last year, Tri Kappa raised $12,000.

Amanda Vetor, event co-chair, said organizers would like to raise between $13,000 and $15,000 this year.

“The main organizations that rely on us for money, that would be a huge thing for them if we could reach that number,” Vetor said.

The Arc of Greater Boone County is offering a fun, relaxed way for people to create a piece of artwork while FUNDRAISER benefiting the community through the third annual Creativity Uncorked event.

“We are a service provider for people with special needs. We’re affiliated with a national organization, but we’re a local chapter,” said Karlie Rudbeck, marketing coordinator for The Arc. “We offer various services, such as art programs, employment services, literacy classes, etc.”

The event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. April 28 at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St. It benefits the Arc Artisan Program.

“An Arc Artisan is someone who seeks services from us in some other capacity and then voluntarily gets to be involved in the art program if they choose to do so,” Rudbeck said. “Through that they learn to create art they can sell.”

“Some (auction items) will be in a raffletype format where you drop your ticket in a bucket and then those winners are drawn,” Rudbeck said. “Then the others are more like a traditional silent auction.”

Zionsville resident Cami Klein recently won the USA Gymnastics Indiana State Competition for level 10 SPORTS seniors. “Cami has been a level 10 for four years, which is the highest level of competition within the Junior Olympic Program. There is another level above that which is considered elite. Those are the girls that you are seeing in the Olympics and competing internationally,� said Michelle Shepherd, Klein’s mother.

Klein also competed in the regional competition and placed third on vault, fifth on bars, fifth on beam, ninth on floor and fourth in all-around. “My scores were pretty good. They were around what I was expecting. I feel really accomplished,� Klein said.

Klein, 17, qualified to participate in the Nationals May 5 to 7. “This is my first year qualifying for Nationals,� Klein said. “So I just want to get the all-around experience.�

Klein practices 20 hours a week while maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Zionsville Community High School. “Zionsville has been great to work with us, and they allow her to leave school a little early each day. Monday through Thursday she practices from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.,�

Shepherd said. “She does really well in school. It’s not unusual with these types of competitive athletes. They learn time-

management at a very young age.�

Klein loves pushing herself to reach her goals. “I think she likes the fact that it’s a very difficult sport, that takes a lot of strength and flexibility. It’s a mental game as well.

I think she really enjoys challenging herself and trying to get to the next level,�

Shepherd said. “She loves the teamwork aspect. She’s really close with the girls on her team. They spend 20 hours a week at practice together. She loves being with her teammates and helping them achieve their goals as well.�

Azionaqua readies for season

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsvile.com Pool season is right around the corner, and Azionaqua Swim Club has a busy 2017 in store for members, SWIMMING which includes extending the season by a week. “Labor Day traditionally is when most pools close, and we have in the past, but we will stay open a week later,� said Joe Bookwalter, president of the Azionaqua board of directors. “We hope that will bring in some new members as neighborhood pools close in Zionsville, then people come in and experience us.�

The swim club also will have a renewed focus on swim lessons, including adult learn-to-swim and lifeguarding programs.

In an effort to instill a sense of ownership among members, Azionaqua recently held a naming contest for the concession stand, which has been known simply as the Con for the past 60 years. The new name is the Cannonball CafĂŠ, an idea submitted by James, Megan and Monica Sheridan. Azionaqua is now searching for a concession stand manager.

Bookwalter said the board was searching for a name that embodies what the pool represents. “It’s a place where summer happens, where you go to experience what summer is all about,� he said. “It’s a fun, safe environment to catch up with old friends.�

Commentary by Brad Thompson Saturday mornings, a Bible study group begun by several Zionsville residents, including members of Zionsville Fellowship Church, helps manage the Shepherd Community Center food pantry on the near eastside in Indianapolis.

The idea for taking on the project grew out of the group’s study of the book “Generous Justice” by Timothy Keller. The book argues for social justice and calls people to act in their everyday lives to show love to their neighbors, especially the poor. The study group felt convicted to act.

Saturday mornings begin with people gathering from the neighborhood who need food. After volunteers interview them to assess their needs, Shepherd conducts a church service where the volunteers and the neighborhood residents worship together.

Then volunteers take the neighborhood residents, one by one, and go shopping through the food pantry. The volunteers provide words of encouragement and look for opportunities to make suggestions for healthy meals that also would be filling.

Many of the volunteers and residents know each other by name. The Saturday mornings are all about building relationships.

The pantry was recently enlarged because of the tremendous need, but Shepherd is having difficulty stocking the shelves. It now accepts fresh fruits and vegetables as well as food that requires refrigeration.

Unfortunately, though, when it comes to protein, peanut butter is about all it has.

We have bluebirds again Commentary by Ward Degler We have an odd assortment of birds this year. Along with the usual chattering flock of sparrows, finches, robins, cardinals and wrens, we joyfully anPLAIN TALK nounce the return of eastern bluebirds.

We had bluebirds when we first moved here. But that was more than three decades ago. Then, something happened that killed the birds. Virtually all of them.

For several years we had no birds of any kind. The sparrows were the first to make a comeback. The others followed over time.

This year the bluebirds are back.

We also have red-wing blackbirds. They showed up a month ago in the corner of my lawn where I hadn’t cut last year’s tall weeds.

As usual, the wrens found the one hanging basket of last year’s dead flowers that I had neglected to take down in the fall and set up housekeeping in it. Now I have to leave it hanging there until the youngsters fly away.

Of course, it’s right by the door, so when I come and go the birds scream at me.

Trust me, you haven’t been cussed out un-

til you’ve gotten it with both barrels by a Carolina wren.

My friend the gardener has given me plans for a bluebird house, and I plan to get a couple of them put together and installed in the yard. My daughter who lives in Missouri tells me I need two, set 50 feet apart.

The female is apparently picky. She’ll check out the first one, reject it and move into the second one. Women!

The most remarkable birds visiting us are a pair of sharp-shinned hawks. Their nest is high in a tree across the street, and I think this is the third year they have returned.

Last summer their offspring, a single juvenile, learned to hunt in our back yard while his parents screeched instructions from the maple trees. This spring the parents are already scoping out the territory as a fruitful hunting ground.

On a related side note, I have noticed very few chipmunks this spring. And even the squirrels are keeping a low profile.

Oratorical contest winners announced

Zionsville Community High School students Eman Kadura and Elijah Davis recently earned the ACHIEVEMENT top spots in the Zionsville Optimist Club’s oratorical contest. This year’s theme was “What the World Gains from Optimism.” It was open to high school students younger than 18.

“They had between four to five minutes to give an oral presentation with no technology. It’s them, a podium and a microphone,” said Tim Ottinger, president of the Zionsville Optimist Club. “Some of them have a little note card they may refer to, but everything else is just them and the audience. I’m always impressed by the really adult topics.”

The contest is coordinated through Zionsville Community High School by English teacher Kim Craven and Ed Bonnell, the club’s oratorical chair.

Kadura won first place in the girls category.

“She was born in Libya and talked about the struggle of her family to escape Muammar Gaddafi, a Libyan dictator,” Ottinger said.

Davis won first place in the boys category.

“He talked about looking at examples like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. They just pushed and pushed and pushed through the issues of discrimination,” Ottinger said.

The contest was held at Zionsville Community High School. Students were judged on their ability to stay within the time limit, their content and the way they delivered the presentation.

“It’s always very adult, professional presentations. I don’t know anything else that is more valuable in your personal and professional life as your ability to communicate,” Ottinger said.

The first-place winners participated in the regional competition April 9 at the Masonic Shrine Club in Anderson.

Every dog owner knows that panic when their pet gets loose and runs off.

For Judy Corbett, her beloved PETS 7-year-old sheltie, Eppie, had a head start of several hours when she accidentally was left outside the house all day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one knew she had gotten out, so everyone went to work. We came home and we started to panic when she wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in the house, so we canvassed the neighborhood,â&#x20AC;? said Corbett, who lives in Cedar Bend in Zionsville. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One neighbor saw her running to another neighborhood.â&#x20AC;?

Eppie didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have her collar on, so there was no identification that would help get her back home. But the Zionsville community stepped up to help.

A neighbor suggested using the Nextdoor neighborhood app, where residents can alert their neighbors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were sightings, but no one could catch her,â&#x20AC;? Corbett said.

Fortunately, after several days, Eppie was found exhausted but safe in a yard.

She was taken to the 96th Street Michigan Road Animal Hospital in Indianapolis, the same veterinarian the Corbett family uses.

Corbett credits community support for getting Eppie home April 6. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People in the community became really interested in posting where she was seen,â&#x20AC;?

Corbett said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I must have had 100 different responses, not just that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen her, but that they were praying for her and watching for her.â&#x20AC;?

MEET DAN FULKERSON

After all, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d COVER STORY been entertained by Dan Fulkersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anecdotes many times before. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll tell us stories about patients or things that have been done in the past by other neurosurgeons while weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re operating during more mundane parts of the case,â&#x20AC;? Scherer said.

Fulkerson, an associate professor of neurological surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, released his first book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing Good Happens at â&#x20AC;Ś The Baby Hospital,â&#x20AC;? in late 2016. The 365-page autobiography explores the Zionsville residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely journey to pediatric neurosurgery and chronicles some of the memorable characters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; colleagues and patients â&#x20AC;&#x201D; heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s met along the way.

Fulkerson, 47, hopes the story will appeal to those in the medical profession as well as readers who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know anything about it. He aims to provide a glimpse of the ups and downs of a typical day of a pediatric neurosurgeon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing feels better than having a kid in a bad situation and being able to help them. At the same time, if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a kid we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing more devastating than that,â&#x20AC;? Fulkerson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the things I want the reader to feel is that emotion, to laugh at times, to feel joy at times, to feel some heartache at times, to go through that roller coaster of emotion we experience every day.â&#x20AC;?

CHANGE OF PLANS

Growing up in Warsaw, Ind., Fulkerson dreamed of becoming a military pilot, but those plans ended when an eye defect â&#x20AC;&#x201D; one that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t impact his vision, he said â&#x20AC;&#x201D; made him ineligible.

So instead, Fulkerson went to Notre Dame to pursue a degree in engineering. During his junior year he decided to work with local emergency responders â&#x20AC;&#x153;on a whimâ&#x20AC;? and loved watching them in action. So he joined the U.S. Air Force and spent several years as an emergency room doctor in Japan and elsewhere.

IN THE BOOK Daniel Fulkerson chose to change the names of people in the book to protect the identities of the doctors and patients who inspired the stories. But he made sure to send the main characters a rough draft before publishing to see if there was anything they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want included. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was always surprising to me what things people did or did not want in,â&#x20AC;? Fulkerson said.

Bill Gill plays a big role in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing Good Happens at â&#x20AC;Ś the Baby Hospital,â&#x20AC;? and he said thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only one part that he wishes â&#x20AC;&#x153;didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it in the book.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the book was representative of everybody,â&#x20AC;? Gill said.

Neurosurgeon Andrea Scherer doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appear as a character, and sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fine with that. She provided editing help and feedback along the way and said Fulkerson has expressed interest in interviewing her for a fictional book heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s writing.

Fulkerson said he wants to publish another book someday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got) no shortage of stories,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Both men now live elsewhere in Zionsville, but their friendship remains strong. Fulkerson asked Gill, a cardiologist, to read an early version of the book and provide feedback throughout the publishing process. â&#x20AC;&#x153;His style of writing is like him. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of witty. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of funny, (with) this dry sense of humor at times, making people laugh out loud. I found myself doing that during the book,â&#x20AC;? Gill said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also very touching, and his passion comes out in writing his book.â&#x20AC;?

HIGHS AND LOWS

Fulkerson said his debut book wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t difficult to write.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kept notes throughout the years to help remember interesting people and situations heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s encountered at work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of the stories kind of write themselves,â&#x20AC;? he said.

A typical day in the office exposes Fulkerson to patients facing â&#x20AC;&#x153;unbelievable challenges,â&#x20AC;? he said, some whose cases have happy endings. Others arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so fortunate. Fulkerson sought to delicately balance the highs and lows of his story to keep readers engaged. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of the books about medicine are people who are either bragging about themselves or things that are so sad itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to make it through,â&#x20AC;? Fulkerson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to write something that would have people laughing at times.â&#x20AC;?

Commentary by Terry Anker Spendthrift is one of those words, like military intelligence, that means something different than one might imagine. It does not indicate that one “spends thriftily” but, instead, that one is extravagant. If we are lucky, weekly paychecks will come – and go – with very little notice.

Certainly, we support the needs of good government and our fellow humans.

Yet, rarely do we dig deeper into our own monthly budgets to make others’ flow more easily. Rightly, we challenge tax increases and push for fiscal prudence when spending our hard-earned income, property and other assets. We demand thoughtful and strict management – not for our convenience or greed, but from a well-placed expectation of those elected and selected to work on our behalf.

So comes now, the new phenomena, in our home state, at least, of the school referendum. Some demand steep increases or threaten dire consequences. A district a few short miles to the north of here is already divesting itself of buildings, teachers and programs to stay afloat. But our own local schools are working to prove value as they hope that we taxpayers consider a reinvestment in their work – and their outcomes. Carmel Clay Schools, for example, is proposing a replacement for an expiring rate without increase.

Our citizenry is among the best-educated in the nation. Strong schools can ensure that we keep it that way. Supporting these referendums seems both affordable and essential. Spend with thrift, yes, but spend as necessary.

Don’t blink, dear mamas Commentary by Amy Sorrells I lost my mind at Target the other day.

The giant gray shipping containers lined up outside the PARENTING store were my first indication something was up. Ten minutes later, after getting lost looking for the shoe department in the new store Iayout, I left distraught and grieving the store I could previously shop blindfolded.

I suffered a similar fate in the refrigerated section of Meijer last fall. The fruit smoothies stocked there are a staple of our oldest son’s diet, and I crumpled in tears when I realized I didn’t have to buy them anymore since he was newly away at college.

May is upon us, and graduation for many, including our second son. I wish I could say the process is easier the second time around, but I feel just as lost as ever. Oh, I knew my kids were going to grow up. It’s just that I’m not quite sure how to go about life without them.

Turns out, it’s hard to know what to do with myself after two decades of colorcoordinating school calendars, blasting

kids out of bed in the morning, spending hours in carpool lines and pediatrician offices and on sidelines and battling over personal electronic devices, making sure ears are clean, deodorant is applied, teeth are brushed, homework’s done, noses are wiped, tears are dried, hands are held, heads are kissed and prayers are said.

We have a couple of years before our youngest graduates, and to be sure, we’ll have weekends and summers and holidays with the older kids. But life will never be the same.

Years ago, a mom with older children told me I would someday wish again for the days of knee-high laundry piles, big grocery bills and the overwhelming daze of raising children.

I’m that mom with older children now.

Listen, dear mamas, when I say don’t blink.

Love them well, and don’t blink.

I don’t always shop outside of my neighborhood grocery store, but when I do, I prefer Walmart. There. I said it. I HUMOR love the cheap stuff. I love the diversity of clientele and I love that there’s a strong possibility I’ll spot a mouse in cosmetics (true story). My husband Doo feels differently and won’t step foot in the retail giant unless forced to do so under threat of death. He cites shoddy products, horror movie fluorescent lighting and the fact that the sheer number of customers at any given time is in clear violation of the fire code. I think he’s a snob.

Recently, I had to go to Walmart twice on the same day, unusual for me as I live less than a mile from Meijer. My first run was to pick up invitations at the photo department. Doo agreed to drop me off, though he absolutely refused to go in (chicken!). Boy, did he miss out. In that short five minutes (well, more like 20), I saw beautiful Easter lilies for $3.98 (Meijer’s were $7 and Lowe’s $19.99!), a young couple having an extremely vocal argument over dog food and about 20 items I didn’t know I needed until I did. I had a fascinating conversation with the cashier over my preferred brand of sunscreen while enjoying the sweet, sweet smell of baking bread at the in-store Subway. For my final act of amazement, I found Doo in the parking lot in under three minutes.

Later, I returned to Walmart because Meijer, Kroger and Target were all out of shredded hash brown potatoes. I know! Bizarre.

Walmart didn’t have them, either, but I did make two new friends in the frozen vegetable aisle as we lamented the scarcity of spuds and wondered whether cubed-style might be a realistic substitute.

I’m a loyal Meijer customer, but I do love a good Walmart adventure.

Caving in on sleep Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Arshid Chowdhury has invented something called a sleep pod, a high-tech structure that can be seen in sevHUMOR eral airports around the nation. Crawl into the enclosure and you can catch 40 winks for around 20 bucks, or about 50 cents a wink.

Chowdhury’s pods have encountered some problems. Many customers have trouble nodding off while nesting. Some travelers just stare into space with their eyes wide open, something most people can already do at their place of employment and actually get paid for it.

Mr. Chowdhury also writes a blog, another fool-proof way to put people to sleep quickly. His newest entry just last week has an intriguing title: “My wife and I slept in a cave for 10 years.”

Apparently, AC and his wife bought a new home several years ago and discovered it had a windowless, soundproof den tucked away inside. The Chowdhurys then labeled this their sleep cave, although the police have since told the Chowdhurys that the former owners had called it their meth lab.

AC wanted to see what would happen if

the couple slept in a room that was pitch black and totally silent. Of course, they could have just slept in their own bedroom and pulled the shades, but that would have made their blog seem even less interesting.

The Chowdhurys have slept in complete darkness since 2007 but admit there are drawbacks. First, the couple has overslept for all nine jobs they’ve been fired from over the past 10 years. Plus, Mrs. Chowdhury was a morning person who used to gleefully bound out of bed when she awoke, bolting for the front door, eager to start her day. This is tough in a sleep cave. Neighbors had a lot of questions for Mr. Chowdhury about his wife’s frequent head injuries.

Two years ago they had a little baby boy who’s been keeping them awake at night.

He’s not frightened of the dark so much, but the bats are scaring the heck out of him.

The process of going through a divorce is not only emotionally draining, but can also be somewhat daunting and overwhelming when trying to re-group and start anew. Knowing all details about future plans, is virtually unrealistic. Oftentimes, through the divorce process, some parents may have a temporary residence until they determine their next best step. Or, further on down the road, re-marriage might occur, making a change in residence inevitable. No matter what the reason, all of these scenarios may lead a parent to seek to relocate with a minor child.

Consequently, when relocation is at issue, there are several specific steps a parent must take in order to ensure he or she is complying with Indiana law.

Formal notice must be given to the non-relocating parent. In such a circumstance, the relocating individual must provide formal notice to the non-relocating parent ninety (90) days prior to any relocation. However, some circumstances make it so that the relocation may not be readily known ninety (90) days in advance. If that is the case, it is still best to file as soon as possibly close to when the relocation is known, but such notice must be filed no later than thirty (30) days prior to the actual move.

By law, a formal Notice of Intent to Relocate must include certain information. This information includes the following: the current and proposed residential addresses; whether the relocating individual’s contact information will change and if so, the new contact information; the date of the proposed relocation; the reason for the proposed relocation; and notice that the non-relocating individual must object to any proposed relocation within sixty (60) days from the date of his or her receipt of the Notice of Intent to Relocate and may request a modification of custody and/or parenting time.

A relocating parent must file this notice even if there is no Court Order regarding parenting time or custody and the matter is only pending before the court awaiting hearing. Further, there is no distance requirement for relocating individuals. In fact, the Indiana General Assembly repealed the distance requirement, making it so that a relocating parent must file a Notice of Intent to Relocate regardless of the distance involved in a proposed relocation. However, oftentimes, there are many instances where there is no objection to a proposed relocation, especially when a parent is moving only a short distance, like down the

street.

In the event that the non-relocating individual objects to the proposed relocation of the minor child, the court will set the matter for a hearing on the contested relocation. Relocation matters are very challenging, for the court will not restrict a parent from moving, but the court can restrict the parent from moving the minor child. At hearing, the relocating individual bears the burden to show that the proposed relocation of the minor children is made for a good faith and legitimate reason. If the initial burden is deemed to have been met, the burden then shifts to the non-relocating individual to show that the proposed relocation is not in the child(ren)’s best interest.

In contemplating whether to grant or deny the relocation the court will consider several factors, especially any factor that would affect the best interest of the child. These factors include the following: the distance involved in the proposed relocation; the hardship and expense involved for the nonrelocating individual to exercise parenting time; the feasibility of preserving the relationship between the nonrelocating individual and the child(ren) through suitable parenting time, including consideration of the financial circumstances of the parties; whether there is an established pattern of conduct by the relocating individual, including actions by the relocating individual to either promote or thwart a nonrelocating individual's contact with the child(ren); and the reasons provided by the relocating individual for seeking relocation and nonrelocating parent for opposing the relocation of the child.

Depending upon the distance, in the event of the relocation of either parent, should distance become a factor in exercising parenting time, the Court may order that either party exercise parenting time “When Distance is a Major Factor” as outlined in the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines or that which the circumstances may warrant.

Fifteen years ago when Terri Bracken decided to open a toy store, her husband UPDATE declared that if it managed to stay open for one year, it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t last five years.

Now, only months from the 15th anniversary, Earth Explorer Bracken Toys will close at at the end of May. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Retail is difficult,â&#x20AC;? Bracken said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The little niche we used to be able to operate in is gone.â&#x20AC;?

The toy store on Pine Street in downtown Zionsville stocks educational games, crafts, science items and baby toys, and over the years involved children in camps, game testing and toy testing.

The continued impact of online shopping has hurt Brackenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business, prompting her to close.

The previous store owner had sold gardening supplies with some toys and gift items, so Bracken kept the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Earth Explorers,â&#x20AC;? simply adding the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;Toys.â&#x20AC;? With her own children in elementary school at the time, she wanted to open a retail shop where she could spend time with kids. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I loved that I could play all day,â&#x20AC;? she said.

When the store closes, Bracken doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have plans beyond enjoying her summer. Through the years she has enjoyed sponsoring classes, seeing families during the summer months and a toy tester event a few years ago that raised money for charity.

Cobblestone reinvents look

By Heather Lusk news@currentinzionsville.com After a six-week remodel, Cobblestone reopened on Main Street in March with new branding, a new interior and a UPDATE new menu.

“It was a little bit risky to close for six weeks,” said co-owner Liz Ezra, who added it’s usually a slow time of year but mild temperatures this year changed that.

“It was time,” co-owner Kent Ezra said.

“It was good for us to reinvent ourselves.

What we were trying to do with our menu and the type of service and food we wanted to provide, it all pointed to us remodeling.”

The contemporary look was designed by Zionsville residents and business owners Lesley Jane Hunt and Tom Casselini, who volunteered their services. Locally based Nazareth Building Services was the general contractor.

Bricks that were once an exterior wall are now exposed after being stripped of old paint. The Ezras love the look of the exposed brick.

were just thrilled.”

“It makes the space,” Kent said.

The menu has been updated with mostly new items, including shrimp and grits and flatbread.

“We’re as close to farm-to-table as I believe any restaurant you’ll find,” Kent said.

Appetizer options doubled, as did seating in the bar area. The craft cocktails and drink menu also have been revamped.

A window with shutters was added to a separate room that is often used for private parties.

“They feel more incorporated with the restaurant now,” Liz said.

So she started expressing a lot of enthusiasm being part of the process. Aliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first role was in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Annie,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; where she played Sandy, the dog. Kate went to the show and expressed interest in participating.â&#x20AC;?

The Boice sisters, from Noblesville, will appear in Booth Tarkington Civic Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Music Manâ&#x20AC;? April 28 through May 13 at The Tarkington in the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Kate, 9, a third-grader at Hinkle Creek Elementary, is playing in the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ensemble. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like the storyline and music, and all the dancing is just amazing,â&#x20AC;? Kate said. Ali, 11, a fifth-grader at Legacy Christian School, plays Amaryllis, one of Marionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s young piano students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like the songs, and the choreography

The house was filled with GHDT supporters and friends, which included former Indianapolis Mayor Gregory Ballard, Winnie Ballard, Carmel city councilors Bruce Kimball and Ron Carter, Raju Chinthala and violinist Noelle Tretick Gosling. I was excited for the opportunity to see guest artist Liang Fu along with my favorite GHDT dancers Hannah Brown, Taylar Green, Abigail Lessaris, Eduardo Permuy, Brittney Richards and Erica Steward. “Superhero” made my Easter holiday complete, and I cannot stop thinking about this show. The goal was an updated kitchen with better flow and aesthetics and cosmetically update the family room and adjoining spaces.

1. In the kitchen, the design incorporated taller cabinets, creating more storage. New Cambria quartz countertops, new tile backsplash and new appliances were installed.

The island was enlarged to create more seating and storage. A microwave was added as well.

2. The dry bar was updated with new cabinets and countertops to create additional storage.

3. The living room fireplace was updated with a new, modern gas fireplace insert, tile surround and flanking bookshelves.

4. The powder bath now features a wallpapered accent wall that gives the space the style it was lacking.

5. New dark engineered hardwood flooring was installed throughout the main level.

Before Background Info: This 2004-built home in the Shelborne Park subdivision in Carmel was in need of several aesthetic updates and additional storage.

BEFORE PROBLEMS: Even though only a 13-year-old home, the owners wanted to update, add storage and create a more stylistic, modern look. The kitchen cabinets were outdated and the island shape and lack of storage created functional challenges. The adjacent living room fireplace and powder bath also were in need of an update.

An historic Roman city near Hama, Syria, is among the archaeological treasures threated by Syriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s continued TRAVEL civil war.

In 300 B.C., Seleucus Nicator, one of Alexander the Greatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generals, who had conquered much of the Middle East, established a city along the Orontes River named Apamea in honor of his wife. Apamea became an important military center in the Seleucid Empire, home to 500 war elephants that Seleucus had obtained in a trade with an Indian emperor. In 64 B.C., Pompey captured Apamea and annexed it to the Roman Empire. The Romans then erected a 20,000-seat theater, one of the largest in the empire. Mark Anthony and Cleopatra visited Apamea during their honeymoon in 37 B.C., when the city had a population of approximately 100,000. During the Jewish Revolt that began in 66 A.D., Apamea sheltered its Jewish residents from Roman soldiers.

After an earthquake destroyed much of Apamea in 115 A.D., Roman Emperor Trajan reconstructed the Cardo Maximus, a 1.2-mile-long main street lined by 1,200,

30-foot-high columns and intersected every 360 feet by side streets. The 68-foot-wide street was among the largest and most famous streets in the Roman Empire, passing temples, shops and baths. Some of the stone columns had unique spiral fluting along their entire length. In the sixth century, Byzantine Emperor Justinian repaired Apameaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cardo Maximus, adding walkways and replacing paving stones. A few years later, the Persians destroyed the city and partially rebuilt it. Apamea was demolished by an earthquake in 1152.

By 2010, approximately 400 columns along Apameaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cardo Maximus had been reconstructed, along with a few decorative arches marking the intersections. Some of the businesses lining the street, including a brothel, could be identified by stone signs. Recent satellite images show that Apamea has been the victim of extensive and destructive wartime looting.
