Neighborhood tied to proposed Little League HQ surprises some

Commissioners voted 5-1 at their April 16 meeting to send a favorable recommendation of the rezoning request to the Zionsville Town Council. If approved by the council, the site at 8602 E 500 S would switch from residential to special use zoning. According to documents filed with the town, the southern portion of the property, which was not included in the rezone, is proposed to include 78 houses built

by Pulte Homes.

Matt Price, a Zionsville-based attorney speaking on behalf of Little League International, told the commission that Pulte is planning to purchase the entire parcel from the State Bank of Lizton and donate the north 18 acres to Little League International.

“If there’s anything unprecedented about this project in the Town of Zionsville, it’s that a private developer is donating 18 contiguous acres of ground — that could otherwise be developed — to a nonprofit for a purpose that’s not been done before by anybody,” Price said.

He also said the Zionsville Local Organizing Committee — a group that formed to promote Zionsville to Little League International — approached Scott Mairn, a division president with Pulte, in part because of Mairn’s baseball history. Pulte officials did not respond to specific questions about the project but issued a statement from Mairn.

“As someone who grew up playing Little League baseball and was fortunate enough to play at higher levels, our goal was to find a solution that would allow the relocation of its headquarters to become a reality,” it states.

Several Zionsville residents who live near the proposed development attended the ZPC meeting to express concerns about the rezoning, including the potential traffic impact and housing density that “exists nowhere else in Zionsville,” according to remonstrator Kevin Schiferl. An attorney and former plan commission member who owns a horse farm near the proposed site, Schiferl said at the meeting that town officials and ZLOC members quietly changed the original site and scope of the project.

“This is a case of rush rush, hush hush,” he said.

Nearby resident Angie Isenthal said she worries that the neighbors will have to deal with “the headache” of traffic and road conditions while the biggest benefit will be to neighboring municipalities with hotels, an amenity Zionsville doesn’t have.

“If this was going to help Zionsville and build the wealth of Zionsville, I could understand that,” she said. “(Visitors) are putting all their money in our surrounding areas.”

Commissioner Larry Jones said he envisions the headquarters providing an economic boost to Zionsville and its neighbors.

“That’s $2 million-plus for the town,” he said.

He also said he supports the project because it will provide open space that the town won’t have to pay to maintain, such as with a park. The site is proposed to have a baseball field, softball field and an 8,000-square-foot headquarters building.

The fields will host the annual Central Region championship tournaments, which consist of a 10-day event for baseball and weeklong event for softball. Thousands of people from across the 11-state Central Region are expected to flock to Zionsville for these events. Price said police will help direct traffic during the tournaments.

The fields may also be rented by local groups for various events.

The Zionsville Local Organizing Committee originally eyed a site owned by ZCS for the headquarters, but school officials struck down the idea.

The Zionsville Board of Zoning Appeals will meet May 9 to discuss several variances for the housing development, including reduced setbacks and perimeter street buffers and open space on an adjacent parcel. The town council will likely discuss the rezoning at its May 7 meeting.

Z-Run 5K run and 1K walk — The 2018 Z-Run will be April 28 at Zionsville Middle School. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. with race events beginning at 9 a.m. The family event is suitable for all ages and includes a 5K run/walk or a 1K family walk.

Kite Day — Zionsville’s annual Kite Day will be held from noon to 3 p.m. April 29 at The Boys & Girls Club West, 5964 S. 700 E., Whitestown. Admission is $2 per person or $5 for a family of five. Proceeds benefit the Zionsville Boys & Girls Clubs. Rain date is May 6. For more, call 317-919-7901.

Co-parenting after a divorce can be challenging enough, but trying to coordinate schedules between parents and a child can often create additional frustration. Summer schedules are typically much different than during the school year and, as summer break is quickly approaching, it is important to be mindful of the challenges of juggling differing schedules. The Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines (IPTG) do offer some direction on how to divide a child’s summer vacation, but remember these are just bare-minimum guidelines and that it is best to do what works for the unique needs of the child(ren) and the parents.

Plan summer schedules ahead as early as possible. The IPTG require a noncustodial parent to make their summer parenting time selection by April 1st of each year; however, if you are currently in the process of going through a divorce, creating a summer parenting time schedule should be at the top of your to-do list. Summer vacation begins the day after school dismisses for the summer and ends the day before school resumes for the new school year. If you plan to follow the IPTG, for children 5 years and older who follow a traditional school schedule, each parent gets one-half of the child(ren)’s summer vacation. Although summer vacation is to be shared equally between parents, it can be divided in a way which works best for the parents and child(ren). Planning an out-of-town vacation? Regular parenting time essentially flip flops for whichever parent is currently exercising their extended summer parenting time.

Get that vacation scheduled and on the books early so the other parent can plan accordingly. When creating a schedule, the IPTG dictate that parents should also consider the other parent’s work schedule, and a parent’s work restrictions should never be used against them. Let the other parent know as early as possible if any employer-imposed restrictions exist that may conflict with a summer parenting schedule, and plan accordingly.

Remember that what’s in the best interest of the child(ren) is most important! A summer parenting plan should be crafted to fit the child(ren)’s specific needs. Consider speaking to your child(ren), especially if they’re older, about their wishes for summer vacation.

What may work for a 10-year-old may not work for as well for a 16-year-old. Although a child should never make the ultimate decision as to whether parenting time occurs, it is important to consider a child’s activities and wishes, so they can also enjoy their vacation from school. If your child participated in a particular summer camp or sports league prior to your separation, the divorce should not dictate a significant change. Be mindful fact that academic, extracurricular, and social activities are just as important to the child(ren)’s development, even if it’s during your scheduled parenting time. It is not uncommon for adolescents to have to study more often, to be heavily involved in extracurricular activities (such as sports), or to have varying social activities with friends, and the IPTG recognize that parents should make all reasonable efforts to accommodate that participation.

Be flexible and avoid parenting power struggles. Unless an inability to civilly and effectively communicate exists (thereby creating an environment that puts the child(ren)’s well-being at risk), communication with your former spouse is key. Even happily married couples often have differing parenting styles and a separation can intensify these differences. Pick your battles and find agreeable ways to communicate with each other.

Lions elect new president

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Mike Moran has been elected president of the Zionsville Lions Club. He replaces Gail Robbins, who served for CLUBS the past year. Moran has been a member of the Lions Club for four years and most recently served as vice president.

“I wanted to be more active in the club,” Moran said. “Before my VP role I was, and still am, the Fall Festival silent auction chair.”

Robbins said she is happy for Moran.

“He is fun and the club is looking forward to what, where and how he will lead us this year,” she said. “We are truly one great service club.”

The Zionsville Lions Club has approximately 150 members, making it the largest Lions Club in Indiana. Robbins was the fourth woman to serve as president of the club in its 88-year history.

“There are several things I loved about my year. I came in on our centennial year for Lion Clubs International. One hundred years for a service club is a big deal,” Robbins said. “Our Zionsville Lions Club has members

Moran said that, as in past years, the Zionsville Lions Club will host four major events in the park, including the recent Eggnormous Egg Hunt. Other events include the July 4th Celebration, the Sept. 7-9 Fall Festival and the Oct. 28 Pumpkins and Hayrides.

Brick Street Market will have a different appearance this year when vendors line the edges of Main Street instead of the center for the annual art fair BRICK STREET May 12.

The change mirrors layouts organizers have observed at highquality art fairs around the nation.

“Instead of feeling like a street, it will feel like a festival,” said Tracy Coussens, event coordinator for the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, which runs the Brick Street Market. “You can zig-zag from tent to tent.”

The change should make it easier for visitors to shop at local merchants.

“We’re really making an effort to encourage people to not only shop the tents but shop Main Street,” Coussens said.

The date is a change from previous years.

Brick Street Market has traditionally been the weekend after Mother’s Day, which often conflicted with the Broad Ripple Art Fair.

Coussens hopes the new date will attract higher quality artists to Zionsville.

The date change also means the event won’t impact the Zionsville Farmers’ Market,

Approximately 100 artisans and food vendors from the Midwest will participate in the juried event, from jewelry makers to painters to woodworkers. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

About 5,000 people are expected to attend. Coussens said the new layout will ease congestion.

“There’s going to be more area for movement,” she said. “I think overall people are going to be more comfortable.”

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com A chance to sample Zionsville restaurants, enjoy drinks and do a little shopping returns May 5 for the fifth TRI KAPPA annual Savor, Sip & See. The event, sponsored by Tri Kappa, has 19 stops along Main Street for guests to sample seven appetizers, six small plates and six desserts. Beer and wine are served at some locations.

Ticketed guests start at Body Outfitters to have their first “savor,” receive a lanyard and map with the stops for the evening and enjoy some surprises.

With a map, participants can plan their food strategy for the evening.

“It’s always more food than you can eat,” said Tri Kappa member Tracy Coussens, one of four event chairpersons.

Each course is served during a separate block of time, so when the appetizer time ends, those food stations close and participants continue north along Main Street to the next station.

“It changes the whole tone of downtown,” Coussens said.

Zionsville surgeon helps patients put best face forward locally and abroad

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com Dr. Taha Z. Shipchandler’s work not only helps patients breathe, swallow and speak better, but he also helps patients put their best face COVER STORY forward – locally and globally.

The surgeon has performed more than 200 facial reanimation surgeries, making him one of only a few doctors in the Midwest to perform the procedure to correct paralysis regulary. He also travels internationally on medical missions at least once a year in impoverished areas.

Shipchandler, 41, said in medical school he became fascinated with how a person’s face is his or her way of interacting with the world.

“My goal has always been to allow people to interact with the world in their best way possible,” he said.

The Zionsville resident’s office on the second floor of IU Health North Hospital in Carmel offers cosmetic and reconstructive surgical and medical services for the face, head and neck. Shipchandler specializes in facial plastic surgery, facial otolaryngology and head and neck surgery.

An immediate difference In Eldoret, Kenya, Shipchandler led a team of surgeons from the IU School of Medicine to assist children in need of facial plastic surgery for cleft lips and palettes. During a 2012 trip, he performed more than 27 surgeries in five days.

During the trips, Shipchandler said he is able to make an immediate difference.

“We’re able to change them in one surgery,” he said.

Each year, Shipchandler volunteers with team members from IU Health and the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center to support Aproquen, Inc., a nonprofit that provides free holistic care to children suffering from burns, facial abnormalities and cleft lips and palates in Nicaragua. The group sees 100 to 150 patients during its one-week visit.

Shipchandler said the relationship between doctors and patients is unhindered during the trips, with little paperwork and a mutual understanding of the risk and benefits.

“It’s a really warm, wonderful atmosphere,” Shipchandler said. “It’s health care at its purest.”

Shipchandler performed the first surgery of its kind in Nicaragua when he assisted a 12-year-old boy who was burned by a kerosene lamp. Because of the accident, the boy’s neck scarred over and became attached to his chest. As a result, he could only look down. Shipchandler performed a free-tissue transfer to free his neck to stretch open.

and said she also was unhappy with the look and size of her nose, which she said was too big, pointed down and had a hump.

Wright said Shipchandler was able to resolve both her functional and cosmetic complaints.

“I absolutely love my results,” Wright said. “It’s a very natural nose.”

Shipchandler has a deep interest in the science of beauty and gives national talks on the subject. He said he enjoys the challenge of merging form and function to assist people through facial reconstructive surgery.

Shipchandler helped launch the division of Facial Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery in the IU Health system, where he serves as division chief. He is co-director of the IU Health Nose and Sinus Center, where he leads the facial cosmetic efforts and performs more than 250 nose operations each year.

Shipchandler, a Fort Wayne native, received a double major Bachelor of Fine Arts in Chemistry and Economics from Indiana University. He completed his medical degree with honors at the IU School of Medicine and completed his residency in otolaryngology at the Cleveland Clinic, followed by a fellowship in facial plastic reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center.

Shipchandler and his wife, Laurie, a pediatrician at Eskenazi Health, have two children, Isaac, 11, and Salma, 7.

“My family and I chose to live in Zionsville because we love its small-town community feel and sense of togetherness while still providing top-notch school education and opportunities, food and recreation typical of bigger cities,” Shipchandler said. “Walking around Main Street and the Village just never gets old.”

Commentary by Terry Anker America’s first president, George Washington, once said, “It is far better to be alone than to be in bad company.”

Although Washington made himself sound a bit like one who enjoys his own companionship a fair amount, he does remind us of a pair of important truths. First, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being alone. And second, we should work hard to ensure that we can always find good company. Today, we are awash in non-human entertainments with which to interact.

Some of them in the technology world even work to convince us, if we are willing to suspend our disbelief for a moment or two, that we are interacting with other people rather than some highly developed software or device.

Still, isn’t human interaction key? Even in a world filled with technology, don’t we need, perhaps crave, the complex and unpredictable company of our fellow human beings?

Enter the community leadership development organizations. Big players include Boone County Leadership (November application deadline); Marion County’s Stanley K. Lacy Leadership series (early March 2019); and the Hamilton County Leadership Academy (end of May). Each of these, through rigorous application processes, selects a diverse but cohesive group of young, wouldbe community leaders to spend most of the year learning together about how our communities are built, run and held together.

These folks are tutored for the inevitable time when they will take the reins in constructing the road to our future. Interested?

Birds compete for housing Commentary by Ward Degler I built a birdhouse last summer, and a family of wrens made it their home for two batches of youngPLAIN TALK sters. Halfway through the season I realized I had glued the house up tight so there was no way to open and clean it at the end of the season.

The solution was to cut one half of the roof off, clean out the old nesting material and reattach the roof with screws.

I hung the house back in the front yard tree on Sunday, hoping the wrens might soon return.

Fast-forward to Monday morning. While sipping my second cup of coffee, a pair of black-capped chickadees landed on the birdhouse, went in and out several times and flew away. A few minutes later they returned for a second look.

In the real estate business, a second visit usually means the prospective buyers are ready to write a check for a down payment. I’m not sure what it means to chickadees, but while the female inspected the inside, the male sat outside chirping and fluffing his feathers. Then both birds flew away, presumably to meet with the mortgage company.

A bigger surprise came some time later

when a pair of bluebirds stopped by and gave the house a thorough going over.

The female spent a lot of time inside the house. While the male was sitting outside on the stoop waiting for his wife to finish her inspection, the chickadees returned.

The male bluebird immediately drove them away.

My daughter is a member of the Missouri Bluebird Society and assures me bluebirds are very particular about where they live. She gave me a set of plans for a bluebird house and cautioned me to follow the specs to the letter.

Meanwhile, my bluebirds are checking out something that was cobbled together from a sketch done by a Cub Scout den mother to give her charges an easy project to build. I figured if a 9-year-old could do it, I have a fair chance of getting it right.

The chickadees have returned for another look, along with a pair of cardinals, a couple goldfinches and several sparrows. But so far, no wrens.

It’s a miracle! I returned home from a professional development weekend to a house and a family which both had their shtick together! Woohoo!

HUMOR Indeed, this is rarely the case when I go out of town.

A typical homecoming is accompanied by some choice vocabulary on my part and a swarm of fruit flies over the kitchen sink.

The fridge/pantry will resemble a Walmart on the eve of the apocalypse, and at least one kid will have missed a practice or an appointment. It goes without saying that absolutely no dishes or laundry will have been done and that the possibility of discovering dog poop on some carpeted portion of the main floor is high.

But when I walked in last night, I was greeted with a “Hi, Mom” and a beautifully uncluttered countertop. The dryer was actually running and there were two, count them, two, unexpired gallons of milk just waiting to be enjoyed. My husband, Doo, reassured me that Tiny Dancer had made it to rehearsals and a scheduled sleepover, and that a son had successfully taken his ACT. Doo had even been in communication with our other daughter who was competing in the color guard nationals in Ohio (point to Doo on that one. I may have forgotten. In my defense, though, I had an entire hotel room, with a king-sized bed, to myself!).

So, instead of me passive-aggressively berating everyone while ridding the dining room table of shoes, backpacks and miscellaneous hair accessories – typically the opening scene of “Mommy’s Home” – I calmly and lovingly greeted my dear family.

For once, I was happy to be back. Truly a miracle! Peace out.

When I was a kid, I collected coins. I’d stuff a handful in my pocket and jangle my way down to the store to buy candy, or I’d get bank wrappers in assorted colors and carefully count out the 40 quarters or the 50 dimes required to fill a roll, which I’d save for larger purchases.

Indiana Ballet Conservatory’s Spring Showcase set for May 20

DANCE “It’s nice to get to show your friends and family what you’ve been working on the whole year,” Manuel said. “It’s nice to perform the piece one last time.’’

The Carmel resident will perform her solo piece in the Paquita at the Carmelbased IBC’s Spring Showcase, set for 3 p.m. May 20 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 650 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. Manuel, 14, took first place in the classical and contemporary categories for her juniors group at the Youth American Grand Prix regional competition in Carmel in March.

“The second act is all the competition pieces, where’s it’s classical and contemporary,” IBC Executive Director Jenny Okamoto said. “It’s a great opportunity to see a lot of the rising talent.”

Carmel resident Quinn Starner, 15, earned first in contemporary and second in classical at the YAGP regional.

“I love showing my friends and family what I’ve been working on all year with my classmates,” she said. “We’ve shown how we’ve all improved over the year and how we ended.”

Starner said her classical technique has improved the most. Her contemporary dance has improved as well. “(Contemporary instructor) Sergey (Sergiev) has helped me a lot,” Starner said.

The first act will feature fairy tales, such as “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Three Little Pigs.” That will be for the dancers ages 3 to 8 years old.

“We have costumes that are created special for the show,” IBC founding Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva-Randall said.

“I think it will be about different women characters,” Yakovleva-Randall said.

There will be a piece that IBC performed with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir in

March.

“The response at the Hilbert (Circle Theatre) was incredible,” Okamoto said. “We want to continue to do events like this.

We’ll be doing an event in Cincinnati with ICC. Then, hopefully, with our ’Nutcracker.’

ICC is on the Butler campus and works with the Butler Ballet, but we feel like we can pull them in for a few of our projects.”

The Scottish Rite Cathedral is a new performance venue for IBC. “It’s the first time we’ve done it at Scottish Rite,” Okamoto said. “The Cathedral is a fantastic backdrop.”

CSO’s Davis earns Sagamore of the Wabash editorial@youarecurrent.com Indiana Rep. Jerry Torr (R-Carmel) presented a Sagamore of the Wabash award to Alan Davis for his dedicated leadership as president and CEO of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra April 14 at The Palladium in Carmel.

Davis announced his retirement in February, and April 14 was the final concert of the season under his leadership. He is expected to stay on through September.

“As a member of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra Board and longtime friend of Alan’s, it gives me great joy to present him with this honor on behalf of the governor,” Torr stated in a news release. “During the 18 years Alan served as president and CEO, the symphony grew significantly and became the resident orchestra of The Palladium. I wish him the best of luck in retirement and thank him for all he has done to support the arts in our community.”

ATI presents Dickens’ work

“The idea is so fun,” Cooper said. “The whole premise is a troupe of actors putting on a show so everyone has two roles.”

The roles of Rosa Bud and Diedre are quite different.

The musical, written by Rupert Holmes, is based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel, which he was working on when he died. ATI presents the show from April 27 to May 13 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“It’s a murder mystery and we don’t know who did the murder officially but some literacy critics have tried to figure it out,” Cooper said. “But the premise of our show is it’s a troupe of actors putting on a show. Because it’s actors putting on a show, the acting part of it is so melodramatic, it’s ridiculous. We’re cracking each other up in rehearsals. It’s going to be so much fun. I’m so excited for audiences to see it because everyone in the cast is just brilliant.”

“Everyone kind of hemmed and hawed,” Cooper said. “I figured I’m one of the younger people in the cast, so I figured I’m more in the social media generation anyway. So, I volunteered to take it on.”

Cooper, who turns 27 May 10, said she wants to increase ATI’s social media presence with the playful posts.

Dan T. Hall got his first taste of figure 8 racing at the Indianapolis Speedrome.

“My dad took us there when FILM we were kids, and I think he was even a mechanic on the cars,” Hall said. “I took my kids when they were young, and again I took them as adults a few years ago with their significant others just to show them how totally cool it was.”

Hall Hall, a Broad Ripple resident who previously has lived in Carmel and Noblesville, decided to share that with others in a film. Hall directed “The Eight,” which will make its premiere during the 15th annual Indy Film Fest April 26 to May 5 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.

The 43-minute film will be shown at 6:15 p.m. May 1 and 9 p.m. May 5.

“I wanted to share the amazing things those people do out there,” Hall said. “It’s pretty crazy and it’s awesome at the same time.”

The documentary follows three drivers, Tim Logue, Jesse Tunny and Jeff Armour, for two to three months.

“My big question was why they race the figure 8,” Hall said. “They’re basically risking their lives and their machines because these are not inexpensive cars. These are basically stock cars. You can have $35,000 to $40,000 worth of machinery that they are running around racing each other.”

Hall is fascinated by how the drivers compete.

“It sounds cliché, but it’s almost true, these guys are kind of the last American heroes,” Hall said. “It’s a rough and tumble, wild West approach to racing, but it is the most awesome thing. It takes a lot of skill, and the machines have to run right. But it also takes a lot of courage and guts to get out there and duel every driver out there and fight the track as well.”

It’s also entertaining.

“From a spectator’s view, it’s the best $10 you’ll ever spend,” Hall said. “There’s not a bad seat in the house.”

Hall’s film, “The Lil’ River Rats and the Adventure of the Lost Treasure,” was shown at the first Indy Film Fest.

Mark’s take: Take a cool, casual and hip restaurant, throw in a superb menu and you’ll have a good idea of what Ale Emporium is. This is the place to go for catching the big games, hanging out with friends or just an evening on the town. The best part, though, is the loaded menu. Appetizers, burgers, specialty pizzas and wings are just a few of the items you’ll want to try.

There’s also an amazing list of wines and craft beers.

What to get: Wings. That was not a hard call to make. I went for the boneless, Her-

Blueprint for Improvement: Carmel master bathroom expansion Commentary by Larry Greene

Background Info: Located in the Valleybrook neighborhood of Carmel, this 1980s home had a master bathroom that had never been updated. The owners were looking for a way to make it more functional.

AFTER SOLUTIONS The goal for the master bathroom was to gain square footage and create a functional design for the owners to better utilize the space.

1. The first major change came from expanding the bathroom into the master closet, allowing for an open floor plan.

2. The additional space was used to incorporate a large double vanity with all new cabinetry and countertops. A tower was added between each vanity for additional storage.

3. The additional space also allowed for a large custom tile shower with frameless glass and three shower heads.

4. Another large change came from removing the decked tub and replacing it with a freestanding tub. Accent tile flooring around the new tub created a focal point and made the space appear more open.

5. A new lighting plan and new flooring finished off the master bathroom design.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The existing master bathroom was small, and the floorplan didn’t function well for the owners. The single vanity lacked proper storage and countertop space. The existing, prefabricated shower was small, while the large decked tub dated the space and took up a lot of space, making the room appear smaller.
