Town council candidates speak out at forum

Thirteen candidates running for Zionsville Town Council seats and the clerk-treasurer position attended a forum held April 9. The election candidates met with voters and answered questions read by moderator Mark Minner, radio play-by-play announcer for Butler University men’s basketball and a Zionsville resident.

The following summarizes statements from each candidate.

Clerk-Treasurer Amy Lacy believes that her 10 years as deputy clerk make her familiar with all aspects of the duties of the clerk-treasurer. She expects the responsibilities of the clerk-treasurer to increase as the town grows, and she said the town needs updated technology to efficiently handle the additional workload. She sees the position as being the “face of Zionsville.”

As a former Union Township trustee, Candace Ulmer said she has experience with many of the responsibilities of a clerk-treasurer. She wants to see updated technology, including the ability to accept credit card payments for services. Because municipalities are forced to do things a certain way by statute, she believes many tasks could be done more efficiently by updating old statutes.

Town Council At-Large (two positions on ballot) Incumbent Jeff Papa said that the town has turned down several projects because they weren’t a good fit, and he’s proud of how the council has brought the right types of development to help Zionsville maintain its charm. He believes that the town needs to focus on infrastructure projects that were delayed as the council worked to balance the budget without cutting employees or services.

Incumbent Susana Suarez said the town needs to continue building partnerships with other entities to attract appropriate growth and maintain a balance between commercial, residential and agricultural areas. She believes the town needs to continue investing in its infrastructure and its people to maintain success.

District 1 Running unopposed, Bryan Traylor believes the town is heading in the right direction, but he’d like

to make it easier for small businesses to locate here. He is proud of Zionsville’s charm and believes it is a destination town. He would like to maintain the town’s reputation for generations to come.

District 2 Brett Ashton believes the town needs to continue diversifying its tax base by making Zionsville an attractive place for businesses to relocate. Developments must be considered on a case-by-case basis, he said, to ensure appropriate economic growth. He believes increased tax revenue from businesses will also help the town address its traffic concerns.

Kevin Spees, a lifelong Zionsville resident, would like to see the town continue to develop its major corridors along I-65 and US-421. He would like to see the town become a shopping destination that it once was, and he’d like the town to reconsider an I-865 interchange at Cooper Road if the opportunity comes up again.

District 3 Incumbent Tom Schuler applauded the current town council for bringing in several new businesses in recent years. He would like to see the town’s daytime workforce growth continue to expand, which he said will help the town’s small businesses. He believes the town is already taking steps to alleviate traffic problems, including the future installation of its first roundabout.

David J. Boggs believes the town’s growth should continue responsibly through a mixture of development. He said the roads are “not up to standard” and would like to see Zionsville pursue stron-

ger partnerships with neighboring communities to enhance shared roads.

District 4 Incumbent Elizabeth Hopper said the town should continue diversifying its tax base and pointed to several success stories in recent years to show progress. She also stated that incoming projects must be an appropriate fit for the town and that they must continue to pay road impact fees to help with traffic in the immediate area.

Andrew Auersch said key issues facing the town are the diversification of the tax base, space for commercial development and balancing growth with maintaining a top-notch education system.

He said that the Salty Cowboy is the town’s only destination spot and he would like to see Zionsville become more of a destination as a whole. He also said he’s in favor of expanding Cooper Road before reconsidering an I-865 interchange.

District 5 Joshua Garrett, a founder of MOBI, said Zionsville has a shortage of places for businesses to relocate, and he’s worried that the town could lose new businesses to Carmel or Indianapolis if a plan is not put in place. He believes that additional tax revenue from business growth could help the town address many of its traffic issues.

Bret G. Brewer would like to use his expertise as the only Indiana CPA qualified to value businesses to help local businesses thrive and grow. He said the improving economy in recent years has put the town in a good position for growth.

Towns consider inclusiveness ordinances

The Whitestown Town Council passed a resolution promoting diversity and inclusion and updated the town’s existing nonGovernment discrimination policy in the employee manual to include sexual orientation at its April 14 meeting. Both measures received applause from the audience after passing unanimously.

“Whitestown is open to all and discriminates against no one,” said Eric Miller, town council president.

The town is also working on an ordinance to create a human relations committee, which is expected to be discussed again in May. Whitestown drafted the resolution and ordinances in response to the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which Gov. Mike Pence signed into law March 26. After the state received national criticism and boycott threats, Pence signed an amendment designed to reduce concerns that the new law could be used by businesses to discriminate based on sexual orientation.

The Zionsville town council planned to vote on a similar resolution outlining the town’s inclusiveness at its meeting April 6, but after Pence signed the re-

visions the council decided to drop the last-minute item – for now.

“With the late adoption of the amendment, it appeared that a resolution was of little consequence other than voicing our position, and rather only those communities that had a non-discrimination ordinance actually had some ability to demonstrate that they had the ability to do anything about discrimination within their community,” said Steve Mundy, Zionsville town council president. “We are considering such an ordinance and our attorney is gathering ordinance information from the communities that have one now for us to consider.”

The two candidates running for Zionsville Town Council Dist. 2 began their lives a world away – literally – as Brett Ashelections ton was born in Australia and Kevin Spees is a lifelong Zionsville resident. But both men have raised their families in Zionsville and want to see responsible growth in the future.

Brett Ashton Age: 43 How did you end up in Zionsville? While I was born and raised in Australia, I attended both undergraduate school and law school in Ashton central Indiana, and have lived in and around Indianapolis for approximately 25 years with the exception of a two year stint in Evansville. We moved to Zionsville in 2003.

Why do you want to run for elected office? I decided to file for office because I wanted to continue to see the town focus on responsible growth.

What is your previous political experience? Most of my professional career has been spent representing clients before legislative and regulatory bodies both in Indiana and all over the United States. While I have never run for office, I’ve seen the good that can be done in politics by those who want to help people.

What are your top priorities if elected?

Managing our continued growth with preservation of Zionsville’s unique charm. We have a great town, but we can continue to make it even better with targeted economic development that will in turn fund improvements in infrastructure.

Favorite vacation: Frasier Island Something you’d like readers to know about you: I walked off a plane some 20 plus years ago from Australia with enough money for a year of college and a dream of building a life in the US, and have been very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to build a successful career and raise a family in Zionsville.

Something most people don’t know about you: I used to play high level competitive squash

as a kid growing up in Australia.

Name: Dr Kevin Spees Age: 54 How did you end up in Zionsville? My Dad’s family moved here in 1932 and my mother’s family in about 1939.

They are both Zionsville graduates as am I and my four older Spees brothers.

Why do you want to run for elected office? I always knew I would step up when the time was right for my family. My dad was an Eagle Township Trustee so I was raised watching my parents give back to the community.

What is your previous political experience? None.

What are your top priorities if elected?

I want to keep Zionsville moving forward in a way that preserves our charm but positions us to keep Zionsville fiscally sound. A big priority of mine is keeping the school system exceptional.

That tradition of excellence helps everyone in Zionsville from business to homeowners and I look forward to that partnership.

What are your qualifications to run for this office? I’ve been in private practice for 26 years so I know how to keep a business strong.

You have to be respectful of the opinions and needs of those you serve and be ready to adapt your plan when necessary.

Favorite local restaurant: It’s hard to go wrong in Zionsville. My wife is a really great cook so my favorite meals are at home.

Favorite movie: Jeremiah Johnson Favorite quote or motto: Lead, follow or get out of the way!

Family: Married to Shelley for 20 years. I have two kids, Megan and Connor.

Pets: A yellow Lab named Jinx and a black Lab named Ace. Favorite vacation: Sail trip in the British Virgin Islands.

Something you’d like readers to know about you: You will always know where you stand with me. I like to be straightforward.

Something most people don’t know about you: When I was in high school, I did my dad’s lab work. He was also a dentist. I worked side by side with my dad in our dental practice for five years before his retirement. It was the greatest gift he could have given me.

Dispatches Whitestown projects approved – The Whitestown Plan Commission on April 13 approved a senior living community concept plan near Central Boulevard and Heartland Drive in the Anson Planned Unit Development. Spectrum Senior Living will include two- and four-story buildings, 180 units, and a memory care center. It will also include green space, outdoor dining, sidewalks, and retail. The commission also approved plans for the Manors at Clark Meadows subdivision, which will include 81 lots on 53 acres. Pulte is developing the project at CR 500 S and Main Street.

Christian lecture series – The Zionsville Christian Church continues “A Christian’s Perspective” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 22 at Zionsville Town Hall, Community Room, 1100 W. Watergun-wielding senior ‘assassins’ flood town

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com To some, it’s a long-awaited fun senior privilege, while others see it as a potentially dangerous endeavor that public safety promotes irresponsible behavior. Either way, the annual Assassins competition is under way and features the biggest field yet.

Assassins is a water fight tag game organized each spring by members of the senior class at Zionsville Community High School, although it is in no way promoted or sanctioned by the school.

Participants pair up and are assigned two targets each week with a goal of ambushing them with water guns when they least expect it. If both members of a team get shot, or if a team fails to take out one of its targets for the week, that team is disqualified.

“We’re really excited about it,” said Tess Whitesell, a ZCHS senior and organizer of this year’s competition. “You’re breaking your everyday lifestyle for about 10 weeks, because an attack can happen at any time.”

Not everyone sees that element of surprise as a good thing. ZCHS sent out a message to parents in the school’s weekly email newsletter warning that the game can lead to “student arrests, loss of employment and inappropriate changes in social patterns.”

grave said he is not aware of the game resulting in any arrests, but it does lead to a number of calls each year.

“We are aware that while there is no intent of the participants to break any laws, we are concerned that there could be a misunderstanding from someone who sees a person, generally in the early morning hours, dressed in all black wielding what looks like a firearm and running through someone else’s property,” Musgrave

said.

Assassins organizers have fine-tuned the rules over the years to minimize potential problems. The current rules, for example, prohibit water guns at school and shooting targets who are at work or church. Targets may not be shot on Sundays, which gives everyone a 24-hour break from being on constant alert.

This year’s game has 180 participants, which is the largest competition ever, Whitesell said.

The winning team will receive $550, which she believes will help motivate players to follow all of the rules.

In addition to following all of the Assassins rules, police are urging participants to use an abundance of caution and common sense.

“The police department doesn’t want to dismantle the good intentions of good people, but we don’t want people getting hurt when it can be avoided,” Musgrave said. “We discourage anyone from modifying or enhancing any squirt gun to make its appearance more realistic.”

Whitesell is aware of the game’s risks, but she believes this year’s participants are wellinformed of the rules and motivated to follow them.

“Because people want to win so badly and they know you have to follow the rules to win, we’re hoping that no one will take it too far,” she said. “It would be kind of dumb. You’d be putting yourself out of the game if you do that, so we’re hoping people follow the rules.”

Gardenfest grows interest

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Boone County Master Gardeners held their 29th annual Gardenfest on April 11 at the Boone County Fairgrounds. The yard Outdoors and garden show featured vendors from across Indiana displaying and selling items that ranged from garden decorations made of salvaged plates, bird houses and tiki torches to home-grown herbs and plants for sale.

Three professional speakers give presentations each year at Gardenfest. This year’s event included speakers on the topics of “Herbs of the Wildlands, Woodlands, and the Gardens,” “Why Grow Hybrid Rugosa Roses?” and “Honey Bees and Pollinating Plants.”

“Gardenfest is all about getting people interested in gardening and knowing about different topics,” said Jean Indriksons, Boone County Master Gardeners chairperson. “People can buy from local vendors and learn things about gardening.

We have children’s activities, Master Gardeners present to answer questions, and a free soil testing that checks pH and nitrogen levels.”

Vendor Terry Mcnulty said that her love of gardening comes from the hunt of searching for plates to make into garden art.

“I salvage plates in garage sales and at Goodwill,” Mcnulty said. “It’s about the hunt, and that’s why I like to do it, to find something that’s pretty.”

It happened overnight. Yesterday it was still winter, with that sleepy gray cast that tells you it might snow at any moment.

Plain talk An emptiness that says if growing plants made a sound there would be dead silence.

And then the sun came up on a new day and everything changed. A friend of mine said it best: “It was as though a green fire ignited sometime during the darkness and spread across the land, whispering of a summer to be found just down the road.”

Daffodils that yesterday were but flimsy stems this morning are shaking their golden heads in the breeze. Hyacinths have exploded in purple and pink. Hastas poke pink spears upward out of the ground, as though sniffing the air to make sure it is safe.

The temperature moves into the upper 60s and then above 70. I ease into a chair on the deck and scan the width and breadth of the backyard.

The Rose of Sharon sports tiny buds that will linger around for weeks and finally explode into pink and white blossoms.

It has puzzled me that half the shrub has white blooms, the other half pink. The high bush cranberry shows signs of life.

The Chinese elm glows with a pale green aura. The maples sport pink buds that will surge

into leaves. At some point squadrons of maple helicopters will flutter and spin to the ground.

Small things begin new growth around the pond. A single golden koi remains from last year’s population of nine large fish. A predator must have showed up hungry one night last winter.

The survivor is skittish and dives for cover when I appear.

It is blissful. But, I see other things, too. The lawn is strewn with small limbs and branches from the trees. There are bare spots that will have to be reseeded. Leaves missed by last fall’s rake have accumulated along the fence and in the corners. They have to be flushed out.

The shrubs need to be pruned of their dead wood. Bulbs await the ground. Bags of Weed & Feed sit in the garage for me to load the spreader and treat the lawn.

The mower needs to be fitted with fresh blades and the trimmer needs a new spool of nylon string. The tiller needs a new spark plug and fresh oil. It is eager to dig new gardens.

I look at the house. The deck needs new stain, and the gutters are overflowing again with junk that has blown in from God knows where.

And, oh, yeah, the lawn needs mowing already.

Public invited to ZCHS After Prom Preview Showcase

Zionsville Community High School’s After Prom party is a long-time tradition at the school.

So is the After Prom Preview Showcase. schools The public is invited to preview decorations and activities from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 25 at the high school. The prom is at The Crane Bay Event Center in Indianapolis from 8 to 11 p.m. that night. The After Prom party is midnight to 3 a.m.

“It’s like a 25 year tradition that parents, community members, Hall and the administration support,” said Ann Hall, who is After Prom co-chair along with Shannon Ross for the fourth consecutive year. “Money raised for the event comes from family donations, business donations. We have ticket sales but the event is free to all Zionsville High School juniors and seniors.”

Tickets are $10 for freshmen, sophomores, or students who do not attend ZCHS. Hall said more than 800 students typically attend the post-prom party. This year’s theme is Medieval Times. The 2014 theme was Journey Under the Sea. Previous themes have including Hollywood and Safari themes.

The After Prom committee, made up of approximately 300 parent volunteers, transforms the hallways, classrooms, and cafeteria into a fun, safe environment.

There are casino tables in the cafeteria where chips are earned for prizes, an inflatable obstacle course and inflatable Twister game, bounce houses, fake tattoo parlor, photo booth, and karaoke. Parents and businesses donate the prizes.

Hall said the After Prom gets grants from Boone County REMC and Drug Free Boone County.

“We give four cash scholarships to individual seniors for college,” Hall said.

Hall, who works in the office of special projects for ZCS, has a daughter who is a senior and before that had a son who graduated two years ago.

Dispatches Z’Run – The 13th annual Z’Run will take place at 9 a.m. April 25 at Zionsville Middle School, 900 Ford Rd. Individual entry is $18. Family/ group entry is $30 for the first two participants and $10 for each additional. Register online at www.tuxbro.com.

Art contest – The office of Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks is accepting entries for the 2015 Congressional Art Competition. CLP teacher to retire after 35 years of service

By Leah Miller • news@currentzionsville.com The Children’s Learning Program launched in 1980, and there’s one woman who has been there each and every year, watching generations of preschool students achievement grow up.

Pat Medjesky will retire at the end of this school year after 35 years in various roles at CLP, a ministry of Zionsville United Methodist Church. CLP has been a part of thousands of families lives, from its first location at the building that now houses Zionsville Town Hall to its 2001 move to Whitestown Road.

During her time at CLP, Medjesky has cared for and nurtured children ranging in age from babies to pre-K. She began her career rocking babies in the one-year-old room, where she and co-teacher Betty Bohac – now retired – became known throughout town for their ability to calm infants and reassure their parents.

For the last three years, Medjesky has been teaching Pre-K students.

“She has enriched so many children’s lives and has been responsible for giving them a solid foundation as they began their preschool education,” said Chris Miller, a 30-year CLP teacher.

“It is because of teachers like Pat that CLP has grown into the school it is today.”

Because of teachers like Medjesky, CLP can celebrate 35 years of success in Zionsville.

“One reason we sent our son, Truman, to CLP is the same reason we love the town of Zionsville: this is a place that is home, that is family,” said parent Adrianne Smith. “The thoughtful, loving quality of care is the same as it has been for decades. Zionsville has grown over the years, as has CLP, however the essence remains the same.”

During her time at CLP, Medjesky put her own children through the program and more recently saw her granddaughter attend. Although she will no longer be a daily presence at the school, the CLP teachers and staff are committed to continuing her legacy of devotion.

New leader of Zionsville Lions eager to expand club’s reach

“We want to do more outreach to the community, try to bring in new members, and let people know about all the good things the Lions Club can do locally and throughout the world,” Amman said. “I am so grateful for the opportunities the Lions Club membership has afforded me. It allowed me to make friendships quickly and give back to this wonderful community.”

served various positions such as treasurer and being on the board of directors. He joined the club at the encouragement of his wife, who was already a member.

“My wife and I were married eight years ago and moved to Zionsville. We really wanted to get involved with the community. It was very service oriented, and a great place to raise a family,” Amman said. “My wife was involved in the Lions Club and brought me into it. It is a great way into the community and to get to know people and understand what it means to be a part of the community.”

In January 2014, Amman and his wife, Jennifer, traveled to Mexico with 40 other Indiana Lions Club members. The mission trip lasted a week, and the members fitted the Mexican citizens with recycled and refurbished eye glasses. A team of optometrists journeyed with the members and helped fit the citizens with the correct prescriptions. Over the course of the week, they fitted citizens with more than 16,000 pairs of glasses.

“It’s really diverse, there are a lot of different causes we get involved in,” Amman said.

When silence is not golden

Most of us probably forgot about the silence with which congressional investigators were greeted when they asked then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton if she used a private e-mail account while in that position. We had … until a news report last week brought it to light. The question, in a letter from House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and first reported by the New York Times, was posed seven weeks before Clinton’s tenure ended. When the State Department eventually responded to Issa’s demand in March 2013, nearly two months after she left office, officials also ignored the question about Clinton’s digital habits. “Given Clinton’s admission that she used a personal account and a private server exclusively as secretary, news of this apparent dodge adds to a scandal that has cost the Democratic presidential candidate dearly in polls. As the drip of damaging details continues, when and in what venue Clinton will address the growing scandal is the question,” Fox News reported. Investigation? What investigation? It doesn’t surprise us that a USA Today poll last week showed powerful craving among Democrats for an alternative to candidate Clinton. “A 55 percent majority of Democrats says it’s ‘very important’ to them to see strong challenges to Hillary Clinton for the presidential nomination. Another 25 percent calls it ‘somewhat important.’ ” We find that incredibly telling.

••• Vice President Joe Biden fired a shot across the Clinton camp’s bow when he told The Detroit News last week: “I haven’t made up my mind on (seeking the nomination). I have plenty of time to do that. … (President Barack Obama) and I care about what has to get done in the next two, three months, and when you run for president you’ve got to run for president … .” No giveaway there. Said Obama to an Ohio TV station, “… I think she would be an excellent president.” Was that a shot across Biden’s bow?

In search of a problem

Were it not for the millions of dollars wasted and hundreds of people harmed by the debacle, one could be amused by the recent flap associated with the aborted legislative actions by the good folks at the Statehouse. One can understand, many of us believe that they “should” be doing “something.” Have we pushed these folks to seek problems which they might be able to “solve” with a legislative solution? With the passing of each and every year, hundreds of new pages are added to the Code books. And, millions of pieces of mail are sent to our homes extoling the virtues of this fine work. Unfortunately, the effort too often ends up being a solution in search of a problem.

“We’re from the Government; and, we’re here to help!” Alas, the proclamation has come to be joke outlining the abject failure of many of our leaders to meet expectations. To be fair, we have unrealistically high anticipations of these folks. As our collective national faith in religion wanes, could it be that we are substituting one

deity for another? Do we pray to government to fix problems beyond the realm of even the most prominent of elected human officials? If so, what can we reasonably expect our authorities to be able to accomplish?

Safety? Protection? Security? Perhaps. Education? Infrastructure? Opportunity? Maybe.

Equality? Equivalence? Equity? Could be. Even as we lose confidence in the structures and institutions upon which our society is founded (look no further than voting rates as support for this supposition), we seem to demand more and more naïve wish lists from those who represent us. Sure, they make promises – often the kind of long-tales that would make Pinocchio blush – but, we love the assurances – a lot. Have we passed the point of self-reliance? Maybe the government can tell us.

Back in the fifties, I’d plop down in front of the TV and watch shows like “Gunsmoke,” “What’s My Line,” or “The Jack Benny Program.”

Deciding what to watch was simple. I looked through the TV Guide, made my selection, and tuned in, seldom rising to change the channel.

I tied a string to the electric cord connected to the small black-and-white set in my bedroom. At night, when I started dozing off, I’d give the string a tug and pull the plug out of the socket. Sadly, I never got any credit for inventing the first TV remote.

In those days, watching TV was relaxing.

But now, I feel anxious when I turn on the set.

When I grew up, there were only three or four channels, which made the selection process in those days much easier. Not only that, but if you happened to miss an episode of, let’s say, “Twilight Zone,” it didn’t really matter. Why? Because there would be something completely new and creepy the following week. But now, you have to watch these shows beginning with the very first episode or you will be lost (“Lost” is a good example).

What’s worse is that if you try to watch dozens of series at the same time, it becomes impossible to keep all the plots and characters straight. Imagine reading 24 books simultaneously. At least we have DVRs to help us manage our viewing time. That makes things much easier … sort of.

“Mary Ellen, when I watched “True Detective” last night, I didn’t recognize the characters.”

“Because, Dick, I think you recorded “True Crime” by mistake. Or maybe “American Crime?”

“Or maybe I taped “American Greed?” No, I think it was “The Americans.”

“Dick, did you record “Masterpiece Theatre” for me?”

“I recorded “Masters of Sex” by mistake. I watched one episode already. Why does a guy have to prepare a sumptuous meal just to get his wife in the mood?”

“I think you were watching “Master Chef.”

“Well, I did record Kevin Spacey in “House of Lies.”

“He’s in “House of Cards.”

“I miss just plain “House.”

I really don’t want to watch all these shows, but I hear people talking about them at work and at parties, and I want to be as culturally hip as possible.

Right now, our DVR has a couple dozen programs on it. “We have so much to watch,” said Mary Ellen the other day. “We need to stay home an entire weekend and finally get through it.”

We used to say that about cleaning the basement.

I don’t like change. Maybe it’s my sense of order and predilection towards the mundane, but varying from routine makes me humor anxious, particularly when I don’t initiate it. I also can’t stand going to the dentist. Too many cavities as a child and the ginger-propensity for needing more anesthesia than normal people (it’s true!) have left me with a lifetime of traumatic memories. So imagine my distress when I arrived for my semiannual checkup and discovered my usual hygienist had retired . . . the day before. On the outside I appeared sincere in my welcoming of New Lady, but on the inside I was calculating how fast I could sprint back to my van.

Here’s the deal. I’ve had to work really hard to overcome my fears of dentistry, and a large part of my “therapy” has been consistency. I’ve seen the same guy for seventeen years, and he’s had the same hygienist for most of that. I trust them both implicitly. They know and understand my “issues,” and when I start a conversation with, “I scoured the house for something to calm myself down, but all I could find was expired liquid Tylenol with codeine,” they don’t call CPS. Is it any wonder I found fault immediately with New Lady? She was condescending, arrogant, and used medical terminology that of course I didn’t understand. She declared “You grind your teeth at night” and “Your gums are receding”

without a hint of empathy. She also made it quite clear that I wasn’t doing a good enough job flossing. How dare she! Didn’t New Lady know how things work? Granted, it was her first day and I was only her second patient, but she was doing everything wrong. Where were the “there, there’s” and the distracting questions and the cheers for at least attempting to take decent care of my teeth? I couldn’t wait for the dentist to come in so I could “have a word.”

But then an interesting thing happened. I looked at my watch and realized the cleaning had taken about half the time as usual. I also wasn’t as stiff as I normally am, the aftermath of having clenched my fists and shoulders for 45 minutes of aggressive plaque removal. Thinking back, I hadn’t actually come out of my chair at all, a personal record. And, New Lady had performed an oral cancer exam, which old hygienist had never done. I couldn’t believe it, but in those few moments of quiet, I came to appreciate the outstanding job performed by New Lady.

Lesson learned? Change doesn’t have to be bad, and, on occasion, change can even be good.

I still hate the dentist though.

Ingredients: 1/4 cup butter, melted, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs, 1 cup crispy rice cereal, 3 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut in half, 2 tablespoons butter, melted Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a medium baking dish with 1/4 cup melted butter. In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In a separate bowl, beat together the egg and milk. In a third bowl, mix the cheese, bread crumbs, cereal. Dredge chicken pieces in the flour mixture, dip in the egg mixture, then press in the breadcrumb mixture to coat. Arrange in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle 2 tablespoons butter evenly over chicken. Bake 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until coating is golden brown and chicken juices run clear.

Treat yourself to this mouth-watering Italian dish, Pasta Puttanesca. I have tried many variations, but this one is by far a five-star dish! This recipe is easy to make, the sauce is exquisite, and best of all, you can make it the night before.

Our favorite part of this dish is the leftover sauce, which can transform a simple toasted baguette into an amazing late evening snack!

Note: This sauce can be prepared in advance, allowed to cool, and stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Ingredients: • 1 Spanish onion, diced • 4 garlic cloves, chopped • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes • 1 cup dry red wine • 1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, pureed • 1 bay leaf • 2 teaspoons dried oregano • 1/2 tablespoon fish sauce or 4 anchovies, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup pitted, chopped Kalamata olives • 2 tablespoons capers • 1 pound angel hair pasta or thin spaghetti Directions: In a large sauté pan over me-

dium-high heat, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil, add salt. Stir until onions are translucent, add red pepper flakes and mix. Add wine and bring to a simmer. Add pureed tomatoes, bay leaf and oregano and bring back to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook sauce until it thickens, about one hour. If you wish you can refrigerate the sauce now, or continue the recipe. Add the fish sauce (or anchovies), olives and capers. Bring the sauce to a full simmer over medium heat, then turn the heat to low. While the sauce is warming up, cook pasta until al dente and toss with extra virgin olive oil or butter. Divide warm pasta among serving dishes, spoon the sauce over and serve immediately.

Zionsville Radio Players seeking volunteers to continue

Despite a successful start, the Zionsville Radio Players have found themselves in need of additional volunteers in order to continue. arts Otherwise the group will “go dormant,” co-founder Patsy See said.

See and Susan McCleland, who together founded ZRP in 2013, no longer have the time available to commit to the group and are hoping that others will take the lead.

“We found out it’s way more work than we thought it would be,” See said.

The founders had been taking on the bulk of the workload. ZRP is in need of actors, scriptwriters, fundraisers and post-production and sound effect assistance.

ZRP most recently performed A Christmas Carol as a staged fundraiser with support from the Off-Main Street Players who provided the props and lighting.

“We are most grateful to OMSP,” See said.

“They were most generous.”

Past shows have included a series of short stories and a Halloween performance.

Beyond additional help performing and producing, See would ideally like to see the creation of

an advisory board that can set up a long-term plan and goals.

Currently the group uses public domain literature requiring adaptation to create a script appropriate for radio. The actors rehearse prior to recording at a University of Indianapolis studio thanks to an agreement that provides free studio time. Then sound effects and music are added before airing on local Zionsville station WITT. The entire process takes roughly four months.

See is incredibly grateful that WITT and station manager Jim Walsh have broadcast their performances. “(Walsh) does just about everything. He has been so great to work with, he’s flexible, he’s generous, he’s affable. We’ve enjoyed every minute of working with him,” See said.

Without immediate support, See is hopeful that eventually down the road new volunteers will emerge who are interested in reviving the group.

School board requests work session on random drug testing

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville school board got one step closer to a vote on random drug testing for students at its April 13 meeting. high school Originally discussed nearly a year ago, board members decided to schedule a work session to hear from experts on both sides of the issue before taking a vote.

The idea of randomly drug testing students first came before the school board in May 2014. Board members discussed the issue and accepted public comments before tabling the issue a couple of Richey months later.

School board president Shari Alexander Richey said she revived the discussion because she now believes that the district should pursue a more holistic approach and that random drug testing could encourage students to use drugs that wouldn’t necessarily show up on the standard test.

“Some experts will tell you that some students that are using drugs that are known to

Other board members disagreed, stating that the random drug tests would give students a solid reason to turn down drugs of any kind.

“I’d like to get this in place to become a deterrent to stop the kids before they take a bite of the apple and not ever give them the chance to progress to something more harsh,” school board member Joe Stein said at the meeting.

ZCHS Principal Tim East told the board that after months of Stein studying the issue, he is still in favor of random drug tests.

“This would act as a deterrent and help keep our kids safe,” he said, adding that ZCHS is the only school in its conference to not conduct random drug testing.

If the board votes to implement random drug testing, East said it would take four to six months to begin the tests at school. The work session had not been scheduled as of press time.

Ezra church: Saintly protection?

Commentary by Don Knebel In 2015, members of a small church in Ezra, Syria, are celebrating 1,500 years of worshipping God in the same building. Some attravel tribute this extraordinary longevity to the contents of a special box.

Ezra lies about 50 miles south of Damascus along the western edge of the Hauran, a fertile plateau that played a role in the early development of agriculture. Today, Ezra is best known for its domed Church of St. George. The square buildingis made of basaltic rock and includes two inscribed octagonal structures, the inner one supporting the dome. An inscription between two crosses over the door says the Greek Orthodox Church was erected in 515 A.D. on the site of a pagan temple. Except for a nineteenth century reconstruction of its damaged dome, the building remains essentially unchanged since its erection.

Colorful icons and gold vigil lamps adorn the sanctuary, but the church’s most prized possession is a box, draped with a rich red cloth, resting behind the altar. A stone plaque leaning against the base of the box bears the iconic image of St. George killing a dragon. The inscription above

the entrance says the church was built to house the remains of St. George and church members believe remains of the martyred St. George are in the box. How much remains of him is not so clear.

A sarcophagus in the Church of St. George in Lod (Lydda), Israel, considered the birthplace of St. George, is said to hold his body. His head has been claimed by churches in both Greece and Italy.

The Ezra church has a distinction none of the other sites claiming St. George’s remains can match – it is one of the oldest continuously functioning church buildings in the world. Some attribute the church’s long survival to the admiration Syrian Muslims also have for St. George, the patron saint of not only England and Georgia but Palestine and Egypt. Members of Ezra’s Church of St. George look instead to their draped box, topped with tokens of gratitude. For them, St. George, whose feast day is April 23, has protected this ancient house of worship.

No lolling about with grammar Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “Hi, Grammar Guy. I read your reports and, I make a point to check out your comments every week. grammar guy I cut them out, and am putting them in a binder, for reference.

As a person that enjoys tutoring the English language to Hispanics in my area, I really try to teach good grammar. The kids from the past are picking up the ‘Street-English,’ too, so when I see them during the summer, I start noticing the changes. They use ‘duh’ for ‘the,’ ‘I seen’ for ‘I saw,’ ’di-dent’ for didn’t, and etc. I really cringe at the last one.

I was using the vocabulary lists on shortvowel-sounds. We came across ‘loll.’ I told the student it was ‘a period of calm in the midst of a storm or pause in music that is playing.’ Then got to the short-vowel U sounds, and saw ‘lull.’

Right away I knew my mistake. I realized I did not know the word ‘loll’. I got out the dictionary to compare the two words.

‘Loll’ is to hang out, dangle loosely, or droop. I was not familiar with this word.

I am not afraid to get out the dictionary, in front of my students, and admit ‘I don’t know.’

Mostly, I use it to get the Spanish definition so I can translate the English better to them. I am retired, so this is just a fun way to use my extra time. Have been doing this for 15 years. Keep up

“Loll” is actually a very interesting word. In addition to the definition you provided above, there is also “angle of loll,” which in sailing is the term for a ship that cannot remain upright stably.

More interesting for us landlubbers, though, is a unique use of “loll” you’ll only find in America: “lollygag.” The Oxford English Dictionaries estimate “loll” entered the language in late Middle English – around the 1600s. But “lollygag” doesn’t show up until the 1840s, and only in America.

If you’ve ever been accused of lollygagging, you’ll know what it means: to dawdle; to fool around; to waste time. You can see how it evolved from the intransitive verb form of “loll,” which means to sit, lie, or stand in a lazy, relaxed way.

We Americans love to play around with and modify the language – and that’s great. While you’re out there fighting the good fight, you may even come across the next Americanism that’ll sweep the continent. If you do … let me know!

For many of us, our days begin or end with a nice, hot shower. With that much popularity and use, it’s no surprise that indoors showerhead designs have taken a leap forward. In the past, most showerheads were stationary and mounted at an angle on the wall.

But the days of the standard showerhead fixture are long gone, and in its place are new designs and innovations that add to the level of luxury and comfort in your home.

If you’re considering a redesign, you’ll first need to determine the amount of space you have to work with, and you can begin the process of choosing your showerhead (or showerheads).

Below is a list of popular showerhead options: • Standard Wall Mount: It’s a classic setup, but you can modernize it by selecting a showerhead with a moveable head or with different massage settings.

• Multiple Wall Mounts: Showers shared by two people could benefit from two showerheads with adjustable water pressure settings. Most of the time, dual showerheads are installed either facing each other or side-by-side.

• Handheld Showers: If you are installing dual showerheads, you’ll probably want to make sure that one (or both) of the showerheads is a handheld model, because they are so versatile and easy-to-use. They are also very handy for washing your hair, pets, or even rinsing the shower unit itself.

• Rain Showerheads: These models are designed to be affixed to the ceiling and give off a spa-like feeling. A rain showerhead provides a water stream that comes from directly overhead. Some rain showerheads are installed flush to the ceiling, which works well in shower spaces where the ceiling is lower or cannot accommodate a wall-mount head.

• Sliding Bar: This showerhead moves up and down along a wall-mounted base to accommodate for height differences in users.

This is a great option for a bathroom shared among multiple family members.

• Jets and Body Sprays: For added luxury, you might choose to install jets or body sprays. You might think of these body sprays as Jacuzzis you stand up in. Heads or sprays are installed vertically on the walls to create a crisscross water pattern that delivers pressure wherever you choose. Some models can even be controlled by a remote control system.

Showerheads are rated using a system called a flow rate, or the number of gallons of water they spray per minute. Showerheads can use upwards of 8 gpm if they are a model with a heavy water usage system. However, you can seek out low-flow showerheads, which have been designed to save water in an environmentally friendly way. Low-flow models use only 2.5 gpm.
