After wind storm, Whitestown looks to toughen roof inspections

1h 9P\Tb 5TXRWc]Ta “ YP\Tb/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ After an April 2 wind storm, many roofs in Indiana were missing shingles, but Whitestown officials say the recent 50-mileWEATHER per-hour gusts highlighted a problem that had already become an issue in the community. “Over the course of the last few years, we’ve had people call and talk about these blow offs of shingles and sidings in some of these developments,� Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “We’ve seen the majority of it happen in Walker Farms.�

Residents in Walker Farms, a less than 10-yearold subdivision in Whitestown built by Atlanta, Ga.-based Beazer Homes, reported several cases of roof shingle and side panel damage. Other communities in Whitestown also reported problems with shingles flying off during the storm.

Norton believes the problem isn’t a result of poor building materials or craftsmanship, rather improper installation of some of the materials. “We believe the shingles of the required code are being put on, but it’s a matter of is it being installed properly?� Norton said. “I don’t think we’re talking about intentional, shoddy development by the builder. These houses are well built. The shingle issue can easily be solved, but I shouldn’t have to replace parts of my roof every year.�

Whitestown is hoping to address by problem by increasing its roofing inspection standards. “What we are probably going to do is add that inspection process to our permitting,� Norton said. “It will cost money. It will increase the fee, but we think that it’s probably a good idea given the fact that we have these issues.�

In response to recent homeowner complaints, Beazer Homes has extended its warranty on roofs from one year to four years for damage done since January. “We’ve been systematically going out and in-

specting as quickly as we can with our roofers, fixing problems with our roofers as quickly as we can,� said David Goldberg, Beazer Homes vice president, adding that homes by many builders experienced damage in recent storms. “I think we have made a pretty aggressive move to go out and deal with any issues that are out there and stand by our homes and our buyers.�

In Zionsville, there were reports of some wind damage throughout the town, including at Zionsville Fire Station 93 and several Zionsville school properties, but none concerning specific subdivisions.

Yet even with full inspections on roofs, DeLong said that in severe winds even properly installed materials can fail. “We do provide a roofing inspection where we’re looking for the installation techniques that were utilized for shingles going on, but you’ve got these wind events that are in excess of what the materials are designed for then there’s not much way you can get around that,� Zionsville Director of Planning and Development Wayne DeLong said.

Currently there are no Beazer Homes in Zionsville, but some are expected to be built in in a future development known as Hampshire.

Project aims to increase power reliability, flexibility

By Kelsey Ligon “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Duke Energy is replacing poles and overhead wiring along Zionsville Road, aiming to provide a more flexible and reliable power ENERGY supply to the area.

The Reconductor Project is taking place along a 1.4-mile stretch from I-465 to Sycamore Street now through the beginning of June, if weather cooperates.

This is the first of three Duke Energy projects for Zionsville in an effort to update services.

Currently, most of the electric load is handled from the Turkey Foot substation, near Turkey Foot Road and Temple Avenue.

Duke Energy district engineer D’Mon Williams said this type of update is happening across the state. The company is working to strengthen the system throughout the region to make it more robust and sound.

Zionsville has a lot of old infrastructure that is “overhead� instead of underground, leaving it exposed to more inclement weather and requiring more updates. The new poles and higher-

capacity wires should create a greater supply of reliable electric service as well as provide more flexibility to reroute power. “It’s kind of like updating the brakes on your car,� Williams said.

After the project is complete, Zionsville residents should notice an exponential drop in outages during storms. Duke Energy does not anticipate any project-related outages.

During periods of work on the project, traffic along the 1.4-mile portion of Zionsville Road will be restricted to one lane.

ZCS prepares to add staff

The ZCS board of trustees held its monthly meetEDUCATION ing April 11 and announced at least 12 and no more than 20 full time equivalent positions will be added to the school system. The exact amount of fulltime positions allocated will depend on the final enrollment numbers for next year. “(For) special education, we’re looking at an additional three positions,� said Rebecca Coffman, ZCS chief operating officer. “As we look at the structure and supports in place to meet our various needs across the district; secondary we have an increase of nine full-time equivalent positions. In elementary we believe up to 7 1/2 FTE positions as we will look to bulk up for our new families.�

Approximately 800 students attended last year’s after prom, with most expenses funded through donations from community businesses and families. “I never had anything like this when I was in high school,� London said. “They literally transform the school, and they do it year after year.�

Witnessing history Commentary by Jeff Papa On April 7 and 8, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with NASA and private space technology researchers, including a SPACE 17-year-old high school senior with a genetics autoimmune research project on its way to space, astronauts, researchers (including Eli Lilly scientists) and the Kennedy Space Center Director.

NASA and its commercial partners are doing amazing things to advance space travel and research, including research on growing food in space in partnership with Purdue University, the Orion Spacecraft Project and the next American heavy rocket, the SLS. On April 8, SpaceX successfully launched a Dragon rocket carrying supplies and research projects to the International Space Station.

Amazingly, the stage-1 booster rocket successfully landed on a robot barge in the Atlantic Ocean after launch. At a post-launch press conference, SpaceX founder Elon Musk stated this component would be back in port within two days and testing would begin for the reuse of this part repeatedly in future launches.

The ability to land and reuse the booster will reduce the cost of future rocket launches by an incredible amount.

At a post-launch press conference, Musk candidly discussed the risks and rewards associated with learning to land the booster rocket on land and on robot sea barges for reuse, and said, “We’ll know we’re successful when it becomes boring.”

Joelle featured in ‘Mother’s Day’

By Amanda Foust “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Singer/songwriter Sophia Joelle, a freshman at Zionsville Community High School, will have a song featured in the movie “Mother’s Day,� which hits theaters April 29.

MUSIC A segment of her song, “Irresistible,� was chosen for the movie, which is directed by Garry Marshall. The song was co-written by Hunter Smith, and the movie is planned to release April 29.

A cousin of Joelle’s connected her and Marshall. She auditioned for him in Los Angeles a few summers ago. Marshall did not have movie projects at the time but contacted Joelle requesting a few songs from her EP while he was working on the “Mother’s Day� movie. “Mr. Marshall picked out what parts of ‘Irresistible’ he wanted for the scene,� Joelle, 15, said. “When I found out, it was really awesome!�

JMF programs benefit from win

The organization won the grand prize in Brackets For Good, a ACHIEVEMENT competition where Indianapolis nonprofits go head-to-head to out-fundraise one another in brackets set up like the NCAA basketball tournament.

Maggie Mestrich, JMF director of development and communications, said the Indianapolis foundation was formed in 2008 with the mission of serving children of all abilities. “To participate in Brackets For Good was a great opportunity to generate some additional funds for our nine programs that we have under that mission statement,� Mestrich said. “One of the things that helped us be successful in Brackets For Good this year is we launched the Spirit of 76 campaign.�

The foundation was established by Zionsville residents Vivian and John Maley to honor their late son Joseph Maley, who was born with several disabilities. “But (he) had the spirit and total and unequivocal acceptance,� Mestrich said. “Along with his disabilities, Joseph was diagnosed

with leukemia at age 16. He actually passed away at age 18. We did the Spirit of 76 campaign to honor his July 6 birthday. We encouraged people to donate 76 dollars or seven or six dollars or whatever they could do to help us in our efforts.�

Mestrich said the foundation raised $85,535, which includes the $10,000 grand prize from Valeo Financial Advisors. JMF topped IndianaFirst in the final head-to-head match. “We are planning to use that money toward staff and staff hours to help expand the capacity of our programs,� Mestrich said.

We used to travel by train Commentary by Ward Degler There was a day, now mostly forgotten, when we traveled by train. When the trip was long we rode in Pullman sleeper cars. There we could watch the scenPLAIN TALK ery go by during the day and at night sleep in beds fashioned from the seats.

Pullman sleeper cars were the brainchild of George Pullman, an engineer from Brocton, N.Y., who got the idea in 1862 after suffering a sleepless night on a train from Buffalo to Westfield, N.Y. Everybody deserved a good night’s sleep while traveling, he reasoned.

The company he founded not only manufactured sleeper cars for America’s railroads but operated them as a separate enterprise. At the end of the Civil War, Pullman realized thousands of former black slaves would be looking for work. He began hiring them as conductors and porters on Pullman cars.

Pullman quickly became the largest employer of black men in the United States. Although the pay was not great, it was better than any other work available to black men at the time.

Pullman travel reached its zenith in the mid-1920s when 9,800 cars and 12,000 porters

worked the nation’s rails. Curiously, all of the porters were called George, a moniker required by Pullman himself. Porters would commonly advise travelers, “If you need anything, just ask for George.�

The “George� edict did not sit well with many of the Pullman porters. In 1925 they unionized, forming The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. One of their demands was that each Pullman car display the real names of its porters.

One porter, Stanley Grizzle, wrote a history of Pullman porters entitled “My Name is Not George.â€? There was also a short-lived association called The Society for the Prevention of Calling Sleeping Car Porters George. More recently, Hollywood produced an exposĂŠ movie entitled, “10,000 Black Men Named George.â€?

Interestingly, of the 12,000 Pullman porters who worked for the company, only 362 were actually named George.

of-way acquisition, utility relocation and other factors. Haak expects it to take much longer than that, but he said roundabouts could be a first step in a future widening of Oak Street. “One thing that we could do and probably will do, is before (Oak Street) goes to four lanes is put roundabouts at Oak and Kissell and Oak and Cooper,� Haak said. “You can design those roundabouts now to support a four-lane road in the future.�

Stransky has mixed feelings about the future roundabout, which would cut into his property. But until that happens, he’s prepared for the consequences of living next to the intersection. “When these accidents do occur, it’s a little unsettling to say the least,� he said. “I’m thankful there is a tree at that intersection and we have a berm in front of the house, because I think in some respects (that’s why) we haven’t had a car in the front lawn yet. We’ve lost stop signs. We’ve lost the hydrant. Different calamities have occurred at that intersection from one extreme to the other extreme.�

When Norb Stransky purchased his home at Oak Street and Kissel Road more than 20 years ago, he was sold on its proximity to family and an easy route to work.

COVER STORY What he didn’t expect was the frequent car accidents just outside his front door and the responsibility of often being the first person on the scene. “You don’t move into a house thinking you’re going to become a first responder,� Stransky said.

His next door neighbor, Jill Meyers, feels the same way.

She used to run outside whenever she heard a crash, but one wreck involving a victim with a severely bleeding compound fracture led her to reconsider her role. “That was kind of intense, and my kids were all there,� she said. “We just happened to be out in the yard when it

happened. I didn’t really want them to have that experience anymore.�

In early April, Zionsville officials released the results of a traffic study by Beam Longest Neff that recommended installing a traffic light at the intersection as a short-term fix to alleviate congestion. The project is estimated to cost $93,000, and Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said the town could use funds from an expected “influx of cash from the state� in County Option Income Tax funds to help pay for the signal. “We’re working on a design plan now for it and working on a budget to see how much it’s going to cost,� he said. “If they come back where they think we are (on cost), then we most likely will be able to install that this year.�

The study stated that with an hourly volume of more than 1,300 vehicles going through the intersection between the peak hours of 7 and 8 a.m. and more than 1,600 vehicles between 5 and 6 p.m., a signal to help with traffic flow is needed.

Traffic is only expected to increase as additional homes are built in Zionsville and Whitestown.

The recommendation to install a signal is based solely on traffic counts. Data from the Boone Co. Sheriff’s Office shows there were more than a dozen wrecks at or near the intersection in both 2014 and 2015. “Although there have been accidents near this intersection, the rate does not appear to be alarming and would appear to typically be a result of driver inattentiveness,� it states. “No warrants have been identified for signalization of this intersection based on accidents.�

After living near the intersection for 12 years, Meyers isn’t convinced that’s the case. “Distracted driving probably counts for a lot of the accidents, but you can’t tell me that counts for every single one of the accidents,� she said. “You just have a lot going on at this intersection.�

Meyers would prefer to see a roundabout at the intersection, which is the town’s long-term goal for the area. The study states that constructing a double-lane roundabout would take special funding – which has not currently been identified by the town – and at least two years to implement with right-

Donald Trump (R-Billions), Ted Cruz (RTexas) and John Kasich (R-Ohio) are contributing to local economies – unless they’re space donations – in advance of the May 3 primary election. Each has or is planning a local campaign office – Trump in Carmel, Cruz in Lawrence and Kasich in Fishers.

Watch for feet on the ground with primarily door-to-door activity. We’re curious as to whether the candidates actually will visit our area. Since Hamilton Co. is such a Republican hotbed, our guess is a candidate or three will traipse through here, but it’s too soon to tell. Wherever a candidate is most needed to rally the troops, that’s where he or she often ends up – and sometimes on short notice. “ “ “ We projected in this space, after President Barack Obama began his second term, that Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) would succeed him in 2016. As much as we’d oppose it, we’re not backing off that guess.

Benghazi and the e-mail server investigation will prove mere annoyances for the former first lady. The fix is in, we believe. She may choose to write her inauguration speech any time now. Although, come to think of it, we’d really like to see Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) run as an independent after Clinton defeats him for the nomination, and that possibly could thwart her march to the White House. “ “ “ Note to Mitch Daniels: Enough of academia, please. Present yourself as an independent (hopefully vs. Sanders in a great contrast) in the race for president and boost us above the mess in which we’re all mired.

Maintenance free Commentary by Terry Anker Our first home was built in the mid-1930s.

Along with it came a ton of charm and a good deal of upkeep. It turns out that 80-year-old windows, electrical infrastructure and plumbing systems can require a bit of attention. Someone once said that living in an older home is like caring for an invalid aunt – lovely and charming but sometimes a bit overwhelming. Regardless, we knew what we’d gotten into and went about the business of looking after the old house with dedication and conviction.

Our next abode was constructed decades later. While we didn’t build it, we came to own it only a few years later. With it, we expected that everything would work, without tweaking, and be largely maintenance free.

In retrospect, it is unclear whether our expectations were more naĂŻve in believing that a pair of 20-somethings were prepared to care for a vintage home or that we, now

decades older, could attend to a house, now decades younger. Yes, we discovered, even promises of low-maintenance and long warrantees can be significantly overestimated. Somehow, it seems tougher to step up and fix the problems when one might have expected a good deal more life expectancy in the materials.

Is longevity ever a reality without some maintenance? Houses, relationships, automobiles and shoes all demand attention.

Are expectations of maintenance-free living an unattainable fantasy that appeals to a part of us that wants things to be easy?

Maintaining the world around us is an inescapable reality. Ignoring it only allows for it to deteriorate further. And, does resenting it only allow for us to deteriorate as well?

I finally lost it, people. Last night, as I sat in my youngest’s room conducting a moderately successful hoarding interHUMOR vention, I suddenly experienced an intense desire to both pull out my hair and repeatedly shout the F-word, and to curl into a fetal position and cry myself to sleep. Reminiscent of the parasite in “Alien,� the stress of our kitchen remodel that has slowly been growing inside me for the last month burst forth, shredding my normally patient self into a barely-functioning, strung-out mommy on the edge. I’m not proud of my pseudo-breakdown, but I’m not really surprised it occurred.

I haven’t been sleeping very well due to the mean-spirited dollar signs that insist upon waking me at three in the morning and shouting, “You’re over budget!� I’ve been extremely short tempered, thanks to the complete lack of organization, tidiness and chores at my house. And I’ve started forgetting things like appointments and showering because I’m so concerned about the terrible eating habits my family’s establishing without a stove. I come home from work each day and totally ignore my kids and husband so I can bee-line it for my bedroom, the only place that currently offers even a sliver of serenity.

And we still have at least two more weeks to go. The countertop guys called today to say the soonest they can do install is in 11 days, which means a sink, disposal and cooktop will all have to wait. That also means that my temporary kitchen setup in the dining room remains, and well as our high levels of Chef-Boy-R-Dee and Stouffers consumption.

Even more disconcerting? Our fecal-contaminated flooring – caused when our toilet spewed raw sewage everywhere one infamous Sunday morning last fall and, incidently, the whole reason for this makeover – still has not been replaced. That comes on Monday. So we’ve been, not just figuratively but literally, living in a poo box since September!

I suppose the silver lining here is the solid material I’m collecting for future columns.

Sort of like the “Alien� franchise, my stress monster will return again and again for your reading enjoyment. Peace out.

It’s a Saturday morning in April. Snow is on the ground. Will this kill the dandelions? Something I have failed to accomplish.

HUMOR I used to have a theory that there was no need to put down a weed preventative because everyone else in my neighborhood performs the pre-emergent ritual. I figured there was no chance for my lawn to become taken over. I mean, where would the nasty seeds come from? My theory, of course, was tragically flawed – though I am unclear why – and by April every year the yellow dandelion blooms are poking up out of the ground, taunting me to respond to their infestation.

I go out with my trustworthy weeder, carefully slide the device under the root system, and pop the whole pesky plant out of the ground. I am ashamed to admit this, but I enjoy the process. Annihilating an evil is liberating, especially when the enemy has spread in total defiance. By the way, I refuse to spray Roundup on the offender. You would never see Arnold Schwarzenegger squirt the enemy.

Here’s what drives me crazy: after I extract every single dandelion, I go into the house, read the paper and have breakfast. Two hours

later, there they are again, sunbathing on our front yard. There is no evidence of my possessing a green thumb anywhere else. Last year I reseeded a small area on the side of the house. I watered and fertilized. Nothing grew. But on my driveway a perfect dandelion sprouted in a crack in the concrete.

I am perplexed by the dandelion’s ability to magically reappear, so I am obsessed with seeing one pop up and bloom before my very eyes. And that’s why I stare intently through the front door window, hoping to see the actual blossoming of this ubiquitous intruder.

This made Mary Ellen very suspicious, so I stopped using the binoculars.

Maybe the dandelions know I am watching and they wait for a lapse in my attention.

Perhaps I am not very observant. My son, for example, went from 21 inches at birth to 70 inches in 16 years. I never saw him budge.

I still plan to keep an eye on my front lawn.

Uh oh, it looks like I have to mow the grass again. Funny, I never saw that coming, either.

Sterban enjoys long Oak Ridge Boys tenure

Sumner and the Stamps Quartet MUSIC who served as backup singers to Elvis Presley or accept an invitation to join the Oak Ridge Boys. “I said give me until tomorrow, but I knew I was going to take the job,� said Sterban, who replaced the Oak Ridge Boys’ bass singer. “A lot of people didn’t understand my decision, asking me how I could leave Elvis. I felt in my heart I was doing the right thing. I felt the Oak Ridge Boys had a lot of potential. History has proven that I made a pretty good decision.

Forty-three years later, I’ve had a pretty good life with the Oak Ridge Boys.�

The Oak Ridge Boys will perform at 8 p.m.

April 23 at the Palladium. Sterban will celebrate his 73rd birthday the next day.

He said the group still averages 150 days on the road. “Even after all these years, we’re still having fun doing this,� Sterban said. “At our age,

sometimes we physically get tired, but we don’t get tired of doing what we do.�

Sterban said a bulk of the show will include fan favorites. “We feel people want to hear the songs that made us what we are,� Sterban said. “We’ll play ‘Elvira’ of course – that’s the law.

Some others include “Thank God for Kids,� “Y’all Come Back Saloon,� and “Leaving Louisiana in Broad Daylight.�

Sterban said the group, which was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year, will perform songs from its 2015 Rock of Ages album, which are hymns and gospel favorites. “It’s very much a family show,� Sterban said.

Sterban said performing with Presley was a learning experience. “It helped prepare me for what would come later on,� Sterban said. “A few years later I went to the same arenas just as packed for the Oak Ridge Boys.�

Sterban got asked so often to tell stories about Elvis he collaborated with Steve Robinson on a 2012 book “Elvis to Elvira: My Life on Stage.�

His favorite story is the first time he met Presley. After waiting a long time for Presley to arrive, he showed with his entourage. “Up until the time, I was a casual Elvis fan,�

Sterban said. “But when he walked in the room, I realized why at that point he was the biggest star in the world. From that time, I understood now why this guy is so special.�

Serves: 4 Ingredients: “ 16 oz. uncooked pasta “ 2 large cloves garlic “ 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves “ 6 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, to taste “ 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil “ 1 ripe medium avocado, pitted “ 1/2 teaspoon salt “ Freshly ground black pepper “ Lemon zest Directions: Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook until al dente.

While pasta cooks, in a food processor, combine garlic, basil, and pulse to mince. Add lemon juice, oil, avocado flesh, 1 tablespoon water and process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain pasta but reserve 1 cup pasta water. Return pasta back to pot, and

By Mark Ambrogi Â&#x201C; \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Darrin Murrell has been doing homework on farces in preparation for directing â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unnecessary Farce.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been rereading PERFORMANCE and revisiting other farces, not this particular show, but other fast-paced farce productions that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been aware of and involved with,â&#x20AC;? Murrell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to get the speed and stylistic elements of the show in my brain as I started to imagine these particular actors in those roles and putting this story up on the stage I know so well and bringing all those puzzle pieces together. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a nine-month process for me.â&#x20AC;?

Murrell is directing Actors Theatre of Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unnecessary Farce,â&#x20AC;? which is set for April 29-May 15 at The Studio Theater in Carmelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center for the Performing Arts. This is the first time Murrell has directed an ATI play, but he has performed as an actor there in the past. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fairly new work by a Chicago actor and playwright Paul Slade Smith,â&#x20AC;? Murrell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the tradition of the great British farces that have been popular in world theater for hundreds of years. A lot of fast pace, slamming doors, mistaken identity and a lot of innuendo. Farces donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t carry any grand moral

message that affects the human condition.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really meant as a distraction and a good laugh at an evening out at the theater, and this certainly is that.â&#x20AC;?

Murrell, who lives in Parker City, said the play has just been making its round on the regional circuit the past three or four years.

Murrell said he believes itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first time the play is being held in Indianapolis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rare bird over at ATI without Don (Farrell), Cynthia (Collins) or Judy (Fitzgerald) in it or involved in any way,â&#x20AC;? Murrell said, referring to ATI founders. Among the cast members are two Hamilton Co. residents, Vickie Cornelius Phipps (Carmel) and Roger Ortman (Westfield).

Neal makes Christie play debut

The brewery will be open daily, closing at 10 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and midnight Fridays through Sundays, but will stay open later for major sporting events. Carryout includes growlers and four packs, and wine is available Monday through Saturday. While food is not served, owners encourage customers to bring their own food or order from local restaurants.

Amazing is not the usual commentary when completing a project designed entirely for privacy. But it can be OUTDOOR SPACE with a little creativity and freedom.

The American Dream Commentary by Don Knebel For my 175th column, I am taking the liberty of writing not about where I went but from where I came. The story is not TRAVEL important because it is unusual, but because it is not.

I found these pictures among a collection of family photographs and other items I inherited from my mother. The adults are my grandparents, who came to the United States from Sweden in 1913 with a baby, seeking a better life. The picture on the left was taken in 1915, after they had settled in Portland, Ore., and had another child. The picture on the right was taken in 1923, three children later. The twin on the right is my mother.

No more than 10 years off the boat, my Swedish grandparents had become Americans.

My grandfather shaved his mustache, shined his shoes and bought a suit. My grandmother cut her hair, parted it on the side and dropped her neckline. They dressed their only son in a sailor suit. Language did not make my grandparents Americans. They spoke only Swedish

at home, and my mother learned English in school. Because of a hearing problem, my grandmother never learned English well enough to become a citizen. What made my grandparents Americans was confidence that their children would have it easier than they did and that education and hard work would make it so. Among my motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treasures was a newspaper clipping from 1930 showing the three youngest children depositing 50 cents into a bank account.

The descendants of the people in these pictures, now all gone, include hard-working moms and dads, teachers, engineers, members of the military, business people, doctors, lawyers and loving grandparents. Many Americans share similar stories. We all share the responsibility of assuring that 100 years from now Americans still be telling them.
