County preparing for legal battle with Meijer

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Boone County Assessor Lisa Garoffolo enjoys shopping at Meijer, but she’s gearing up for a legal battle against the big-box store that could have ramifications for TAXES taxpayers across the state.

Even before it opened its doors in May 2014, the Meijer in Whitestown’s Anson development began appealing its tax assessment through a concept known as the dark store theory. The idea is that taxes should be assessed solely on the building itself, so those making the appeal compare assessments with similar buildings in vastly different areas. Many times the comparisons are with structures that are empty or in a declining area.

Vacant buildings usually are assessed at low rates, so Garoffolo said it makes sense that a business owner would attempt to set its rates at those levels. But she doesn’t believe it’s fair.

“We don’t want to gouge anybody. We just want them to pay what they should be paying,” she said. “We don’t want to pass it on to someone else.”

Garoffolo said the county has assessed Meijer’s value at $61 per square foot, but the retailer is claiming that it should be paying $52 per square foot.

If Meijer wins its appeal — set to be heard in September — the county would be responsible for refunding the difference and would collect substantially less money going forward. It would set a precedent that other retailers would likely take advantage of, leading to millions of lost dollars in revenue for taxing entities. And local taxpayers would be on the hook to make up the difference or suffer the effects when services are cut.

Boone County Councilor Elise Nieshalla said that the Whitestown Lowe’s has already followed in Meijer’s footsteps, using the dark store theory to file an appeal of its own. That appeal is expected to be heard soon after Meijer’s.

The results show that Zionsville is the safest city in Indiana, closely followed by Carmel at No. 3 and Fishers at No. 4. Rankings were based on both violent crimes and property crimes.

$150,000 to begin funding the legal battle, which Garoffolo said could cost as much as $400,000. The Town of Whitestown has agreed to chip in $100,000, and county officials are meeting with leaders from other areas to request assistance.

“We’re trying to get some other counties to pitch in, because a win for us would be a win for them,” Garoffolo said.

Meijer has already used the dark store theory to successfully win appeals in Clarke and Howard counties, Nieshalla said. Boone County officials have been reviewing those rulings to bolster their own case and are planning to bring in experts from across the nation to testify in their favor.

Garoffolo said that other counties have agreed to Meijer’s lower assessed rate to avoid going to court, but she and Nieshalla agree that this issue is too important to ignore.

“This is a fight we have to pursue, because to not do anything and settle would really hurt us and other taxing districts,” Nieshalla said. “We feel like the best approach is to fight this.”

Officials from Meijer did not respond to a request for comment.

Town tightens smoking law Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council met April 9 to discuss amendments to its smoking ordinance and a proposed change in processing claims.

What happened: The council approved an amendment to tighten its smoking ordinance.

What it means: The amendment prohibits tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vaping from being used in parks, public places and places of employment. Previously, the ordinance only banned cigarettes, pipes and cigars. The ban includes all municipal property owned or leased by the town or the Zionsville Board of Parks and Recreation. Department heads may designate a limited outdoor area within municipal property for employees to smoke or use tobacco.

What’s next: The ordinance is in effect.

Violators may be fined up to $250.

What happened: The council introduced a claims processing ordinance amendment.

What it means: The amendment would allow for certain claims — such as credit card bills, vehicle maintenance and gasoline — to be paid before receiving approval from the council. It will allow the town to take advantage of discounts offered for timely payments and reduce the possibility of a claim not being paid on time (and associated late fees) because it is due before a council meeting.

What’s next: The council was expected to vote on the amendment at its April 16 meeting.

What are the biggest issues facing Boone County residents? As the Sheriff of Boone County, we will be the starting point at stopping the drug epidemic and every growing crime that goes with it.

What changes do you hope to bring about if elected? I will work tirelessly to help make Boone County a safe county again.

To continue the implementation of our fiveyear strategic business plan. The plan is available to anyone for review. We need to continue to focus on the opioid and drug problem. This creates other crimes that support this type of behavior.

What are the biggest issues facing Boone County residents? The drug issue that is approaching epidemic levels. This disease is taking too many lives each year.

The other issue facing us is the probability that we need to expand the current jail that was built in 1992 or build a new jail.

What are your qualifications to run for this office? I have 34 years of law enforcement experience along with my educational experience, which includes an AAS in engineering, a B.A. in business and a master’s degree in business management.

What changes do you hope to bring about if elected? We have begun the changes that we wanted to make. We have hired people in most divisions since we had not hired any additional staffing since 2004.

With the passing of the 2017 Public Safety Local Income Tax, we put an additional 29 staff members on board at the sheriff’s office, long overdue.

“I’m a soccer coach by CHICKENS trade, so having camps are a vehicle of learning that I’ve had my feet in for a couple of decades,” said Hauter, who will begin his 11th season as DePauw University men’s soccer coach this fall.

Hauter, who grew up in Zionsville, is the host of a reality TV show, “Coop Dreams.”

The show is shooting its fourth season, set to air this summer on Discovery Network’s Destination America channel. It’s about a dad who starts with four chickens as a path toward a more grounded and sustainable lifestyle. Now Hauter, who lives in Marshall, Ill., has 30 chickens, four goats, three horses and is getting started with bees.

Hauter will hold Coop Camp at Zionsville’s Lions Park from April 27 to 29.

“As we started to learn different and better ways to care for your backyard flock, all this information we were learning isn’t always able to transfer into a 30-minute episode,” Hauter said. “So we wanted to have some workshops, some speakers and some of the great people we are meeting on our travels come and present. (It’s) for backyard chicken keepers to have a weekend getaway where they can talk chickens.”

Z’Run to benefit PTO programs

By Kiersten Riedford news@currentzionsville.com On April 28, Zionsville Middle School will host the 16th annual Z’Run, a fundraiser for PTO-sponsored programs FUNDRAISER that include educational grants, teacher and student appreciation events and more.

The event includes a 5K run/walk or a 1K family walk and is designed to show the community’s support of youth engaging in lifelong fitness habits. The event will begin at 9 a.m. Dogs are allowed to participate.

The event is for family members of all ages.

Award groups begin at age 8 and younger and include divisions up to 70 and older.

The races will begin at ZMS, 900 Ford Rd. The 1K will be on the course around Mulberry Fields Park. The 5K will wind to the north trail and lead back to Mulberry Fields.

The Boone County Chamber of Commerce will host a revamped Home and Business Expo April 19-21 at the Boone CHAMBER County Fairgrounds. The event will include more than 60 exhibitors, provide family-friendly activities, offer home improvement demonstrations and feature HGTV stars from the show “Good Bones.”

“In the past it was a home and garden show,” said Diane Schultz, Boone County Chamber of Commerce executive director.

“As a chamber, we have renamed it to a home and business expo to highlight our chamber members, no matter what business they provide.”

Family friendly activities include Kids’ Night April 19 with inflatables, face painting and balloon art followed by the 64th annual Lebanon Kiwanis Club’s Pancake Supper.

On April 21, WIBC 93.1FM “Home and Garden Show” personalities Pat Sullivan and Denny Smith will broadcast live. Is it time to garden yet?

Commentary by Ward Degler All winter my gardens have sat in the cold, the rain and the snow — waiting for spring and new life. Three weeks ago, Gigi (Garden Girl) came PLAIN TALK over and cleared out all the dead plants in preparation for Easter.

I thought that would be the signal to launch a new season of gardening. But then, 9 inches of snow plus 3 inches of snow plus 4 inches of rain, along with freezing temperatures, made it pretty clear winter was not yet over.

In addition to new plants for front and back gardens, I have all the potted stuff that has spent the winter struggling to stay alive in my dining room.

I need to get them back outside where they can breathe again and shrug off the heaviness of winter.

We had a couple days in the 70s when I thought I could soon put some of the hardier ones outside again. Then, the overnight temps dropped into the 20s, and everything stayed where it was.

I also want to put in a cutting bed on the south side of the house. We get good sun there, and Gigi did a lot of digging and prep work last fall. Actually, the cutting bed has been on the drawing board for two years, but you may remember the past two summers have been thoroughly soaked, rainy seasons.

Hopefully, this summer will be different. I really miss walking past vases of zinnias, daisies, cosmos,

snapdragons and violas in every room of the house.

I even have packets of seeds that have been sitting on the shelf for two years. Every time I reached for them, it was raining. They might not be viable anymore, but I will put them in the ground just the same. I owe it to them.

Last weekend, I drove to Missouri to be with my daughter and her family at the 1-year anniversary of my grandson’s death. I figured someone might need a shoulder to lean on.

At the end of the weekend, my daughter put on her jacket (it was cold in Missouri, too) and grabbed a trowel. I had temporarily forgotten that she is a Master Gardener. We toured her gardens, and she sent me to my car with dozens of starts for transplanting. Perennials, mostly, but something for every garden spot at our home.

“Get them in the ground,” she said.

Driving back home I realized that Mother Nature can easily ignore a guy like me when I plead for gardening weather, but I don’t think she stands a chance against a Master Gardener, especially one as strong willed as my daughter.

ZIONSVILLE/WHITESTOWN Construction was expected to begin April 16 on a new roundabout at Whitestown Parkway and IndiaCONSTRUCTION napolis Road. Traffic will not be allowed to travel straight through the intersection. Westbound traffic must turn south on Indianapolis Road; eastbound traffic must turn north on Indianapolis Road; southbound traffic must turn west on Whitestown Parkway; and northbound traffic must turn east on Whitestown Parkway. The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by May 12.

Construction is under way on Third Street storm sewer improvements. Calumet Civil Contractors, Inc. will replace aging and undersized storm sewers between Oak and Walnut streets.

Additionally, storm sewers will be replaced on Cedar Street between Second Street just north and south of Cedar Street. The project is expected to be complete in mid-June.

Construction is under way on Fourth Street storm sewer improvements between Hawthorne and Pine streets. The project is expected to be complete in early June. Temporary closures and limitations are expected throughout the project.

C.R. 400 South/425 South is closed between C.R. 650 East and 750 East as crews work on the 300 South/400 South connector project in east Whitestown. The county has not provided an estimated completion date.

CARMEL Four culverts will be replaced along 121st Street, between the Boone County line and Shelborne Road. Construction was expected to begin by April 9. The closure will roll as work progresses.

Construction on a new access ramp from Lowes Way to Keystone Parkway is under way. Phase I of the project is expected to be complete in October 2019.

Grassroots group Boone County Voices for Change aims to be a resource for all

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Frustrated after the 2016 election, Zionsville resident Jan Hornaday wanted to channel her emotions into something good. She reached out to a dozen friends to consider volunteering or creating a short-term COVER STORY service project, asking them to include others who might be interested. The news spread, and when they held their first meeting in late November 2017 to figure out how to make a difference in the community, more than 150 people attended.

“This was not a long-term plan,” Hornaday said. “It’s been a complete surprise.”

Last November, Hornaday stood before members of Boone County Voices for Change, the organization that evolved from the collective interest of local residents, and celebrated one year of existence.

“We were here because we were concerned,” Hornaday said during the meeting. “We were concerned about the environment, we were concerned about health care, we were concerned about women’s rights, we were concerned about the free press. Mostly, we were concerned about our neighbors and ourselves who might be people of color or might be part of the LGBT community or might be different nationalities or religions.”

BCVC began as an outlet for the friends to help the community but has become a resource for non-partisan political information.

“Not everything we do is political,” Hornaday said.

The group has held forums about implicit bias, redistricting reform and community-building activities. The group includes men and women across party lines.

“I think because we’re issues-based, there’s room for everyone,” Hornaday said. “One of our pillars is to promote a fair and open democracy.”

Hornaday said some Republican members want to be educated on both sides of issues, some have a more independent viewpoint and some want to change their party views from within. She encourages everyone to be more involved in their parties.

The Boone County Voices for Change Facebook page now has 1,000 members. In the first year, it created an executive board, a steering committee, formed interest group committees and held four speaker-led events.

“I think that was one of the primary motivations, just to find other people in the community that might have a similar outlook,” said Kara Sims, vice president of BCVC. “I think everyone was really amazed at how many other people there were here who were sympathetic.”

the nation on some issues and empowering people to call,” Hornaday said.

The group also encourages members to take an active role in the community by running for office, something that Marcia Rosenfeld had considered in the past but never took seriously until recently. It was partly because of encouragement from BCVC that she decided to run for Boone County Council in District 1.

“People never felt like they could win before (as a Democrat),” Rosenfeld said.

She is the only Democrat running in her district for the primary and one of two Democrats in Zionsville running for county council positions.

“I know that these women are behind me,” she said.

Rosenfeld hopes that others will better understand what elected roles entail and realize how they can make a difference by running for public office.

“People in BCVC are in it because they’re passionate,” Rosenfeld said. “They don’t necessarily think of themselves as politicians.”

Looking to the future, Hornaday has a short-term plan to bring more general-interest speakers to their public sessions, encouraging questions from every point of view.

“Our tagline is to bring balance to the conversation in Boone County,” Hornaday said.

One of her original goals for the group is to listen to and understand both sides of issues.

“I don’t think that there’s an end point. I don’t think that if something changes in an election, if a person wins or some person loses we think our job is done,” Hornaday said.

“We see (BCVC) in for the long haul to keep bringing balance to the conversation, making small changes on issues.”

As a former resident of Boone County, Kathryn Ransburg was connected with many people participating in BCVC. Even though she lives in Hendricks County, she became involved with the group and eventually asked on Facebook if others in her county would be interested in creating something with a local focus.

“We wanted to do something more than just be involved in party politics,” she said.

The group’s goal is to promote civic engagement in Hendricks County and the state.

The non-partisan HCVC recently launched a voter registration campaign, starting with educating high school students.

“Hendricks County voter registration rate is extremely low,” Ransburg said. “Unfortunately, people don’t think their vote matters.”

HCVC members host a monthly series of speakers addressing general topics of interest such as education and veteran services.

“We definitely are progressive, but our mission is to get people involved and to get people engaged,” she said.

With more than 400 members, Ransburg said the biggest surprise is that people are no longer hesitant to share differing opinions.

“This whole thing has taken on a life of its own, and that’s a wonderful thing,” she said.

Commentary by Terry Anker With each trip planned and each itinerary booked, we can find ourselves stretched between excitement and anxiety. Even as we eagerly anticipate the chance to break away from our daily routines and find solace in an exotic locale, often unknown to us but for our imaginations, we can harbor a bit of secret apprehension. New foods, new beds, new climates, new languages – each deliver to us an unsettling dose of, well, new. We like what we have – that’s why we have it. Still, we seek something more. Perhaps it is part of our human condition. What we have is never as good as what we want – which is never as good as what we have.

The paradox is most confusing.

Yet, we cannot find a substitute. Even in a world of social media, virtual reality and Asian-fusion, travel is the most direct way to understand a culture and, perhaps, lower our defenses just a bit. Famed Hollywood actress Shirley MacLaine is attributed with noting that, “The more I traveled, the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” Shared human experience, in Istanbul or Rio, serves best to help us find our commonality and to celebrate our difference.

One travels to learn about others. But, that education does not stand alone. Very often, we learn more about ourselves. At first, one might wonder why they eat what they eat, do what they do, or live like they live. Then, in a moment of reflection, the question is turned inward. When observing them in a strange land, the questions come easily. What might the mirror say if we asked it the same?

For me, it’s been a slow, almost imperceptible build-up of teaching and parenting stresses combined with schizophrenic weather that has me longing for a beach and a mai tai. But I didn’t realize how tired and overwhelmed I was until spring break because like most moms, I just kept pushing forward, regardless of my own state of mind.

After a short weekend in New York City with one of my twins to check out some colleges and stand in line for hours to enjoy a milkshake/cookie dough/Statue of Liberty (in order of priority), I immediately lost a fight to a nasty cold and subsequently did nothing except sneeze and mainline Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet for 72 hours.

By Thursday, I was finally able to tackle the long-neglected yard work, taxes and actually cook a non-Kraft dinner, but was in bed by 8:30 almost every night. Not exactly the break I had planned, but clearly much-needed.

So, as I look ahead to these last few weeks of school, I’m hoping I can make it to May 30. The sun is shining today, which is a good sign, and homework for my kiddos should subside as exams approach. At the very least, I now have a mantra: “It’s the final countdown!”

Most of us have life insurance, a retirement account and a house. Some of us have a will that we made out years LEGAL ago when we were worried about who would take care of our children if we died. All of us do not have to worry about the first $11.2 million of our estates being taxed by Uncle Sam. However, when was the last time you thought about how your asset ownership, beneficiary designations, wills and trusts coordinate for the benefit of your heirs? An effective method to achieve practical estate asset distribution simplicity is to coordinate the use of asset beneficiary designations with a separate trust agreement.

Life insurance and retirement accounts are assets traditionally structured for distribution upon the death of the owner by direct beneficiary designation. These beneficiary designations have priority over any other instruction you may have established in writing in a will or trust. Under Indiana law, every asset is capable of ownership as a transfer on death (TOD) asset. Real estate,

bank accounts, stocks and investment accounts, cars and other tangible assets all may convey a TOD beneficiary designation, allowing the owner to name the beneficiary of each TOD asset separately, if desired.

Coordination of a TOD asset designation strategy may be applied to provide both direct and timely financial benefit to your heirs for some assets (for example, life insurance proceeds) and practical administration structure for other assets (for example, your residence) to allow your chosen representative to sell or distribute for your heirs to receive, either outright or in trust.

This structure is accomplished by establishing a revocable trust agreement designed to receive title to the owner’s designated TOD assets. Those assets are administered after your death by your chosen trustee.

Do you know if you have dense breasts?

Most women don’t know, unless they have had a screening mamPREVENTION mogram report.

Dense breast tissue isn’t related to a woman’s overall body size, breast cup size or how ‘lumpy’ the breasts feel on self-breast exam. Breast tissue density is determined on the mammogram image.

So, what is breast density? The breasts are composed of fatty tissue and milk-duct gland tissue. Some women have mostly fatty tissue and some women have mostly milk-duct gland tissue. Those that have mostly fatty tissue do not have dense breasts. Those who have mostly milk-duct gland tissue do have dense breast tissue.

Dense breast tissue is extremely common. In fact, 50 percent of women who go for a screening mammogram have dense breast tissue. Indiana law requires women with dense breast tissue who undergo screening mammogram to receive a mammogram report informing them that they have dense breast tissue.

Why does this matter? Because the dens-

er the breasts are, the harder it is for the mammogram to find a breast cancer hiding in the dense breast tissue. Mammograms can be less accurate in women with dense breasts because sometimes the breast tumors are indistinguishable from the dense breast tissue.

What can be done about this? Find a better test to distinguish breast cancer from dense breast tissue.

Abbreviated breast MRI (screening breast MRI), or AB-MRI, is a new, game-changing technology that improves breast cancer screening in women with dense breast tissue. AB-MRI is painless and quick – takes less than 10 minutes – and the results are superior to digital mammography. Compared to mammography, which detects 5 to 6 cancers per 1,000 patients, AB-MRI is an improvement that can detect 15 cancers per 1,000 patients.

Better tests mean better outcomes for patients. That’s why it matters.

Carpal tunnel is a problem that typically results in aching, numbness and tingling, generally affecting the YOUR HEALTH hand. Symptoms are typically worse at night and may wake you from your sleep. Driving, typing, reading and holding a telephone often make the symptoms worse.

It’s unclear why carpal tunnel syndrome develops. Risk factors such as obesity, female gender, diabetes, thyroid issues and pregnancy can lead to swelling of the median nerve. The anatomy of the wrist resembles a tunnel in which the nerve resides.

When the nerve swells, it has nowhere to go, resulting in continual squeezing of the nerve leading to the symptoms mentioned above.

Since the nerve is like a wire, the gold standard for its diagnosis involves measuring electrical activity across the nerve at various points using small needles in the arm. This is called an electromyography (EMG) test. Recently, non-invasive tests have been developed using ultrasound to measure the nerve. The main advantage of ultrasound is that it is painless and quick, though its accuracy varies, depending on the person.

Traditional non-surgical treatments in-

clude steroid injections, splinting and activity modification. Surgical nerve decompression, the gold standard treatment, involves cutting the ribbon that lies over the top of the tunnel in order to give the nerve more room to swell without being squeezed, thus reducing the symptoms.

Recently, a non-surgical treatment alternative was developed. Using ultrasound guidance, a needle is first inserted adjacent to the nerve, and a combination of numbing medicine, normal saline and a small dose of cortisone is injected to bathe the nerve and push it away from the needle. Then, using the same poke, the needle is used as a cutting device, passing back and forth through the ribbon. The procedure is done in the office setting, leading to minimal down time.

It also has essentially zero scar formation on the skin. A variety of studies show it can have positive results that are comparable to what you may find two years following a surgery.

If you’re looking for an alternative to surgery, this may be a good treatment option.

Goodwin, Ziobro join Feinstein for Songbook reunion at Palladium

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Julia Goodwin and Nick Ziobro, this concert venue is a home away from home.

“The Palladium is where CONCERT I first fell in love with the Great American Songbook,” Goodwin said. “I always say it is one of my favorite venues to perform at, and I feel so at home whenever I return.”

Goodwin, the 2013 Songbook Ambassador, and Nick Ziobro, 2012 Songbook Ambassador, will join Michael Feinstein in concert at 8 p.m. April 21 at The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“The audience can expect to see the two of us returning to the place where it all began for us, celebrating the music that made us who we are,” Ziobro said.

“I can’t wait to step back on stage at the Palladium with Michael. The Palladium always feels like home every time we come back to perform, and it’s really exciting to be there with Michael, where it all began with the Songbook Academy.”

Feinstein is the founder of the Great American Songbook Foundation and artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts.

“Michael is an undeniably incredible talent, mentor and friend. It is always a pleasure working with him,” Goodwin said.

“Nick and I have each been very fortunate to perform with Michael many times over the years. Michael has taken us under his wing to places such as Carnegie Hall, 54 Below, Jazz at Lincoln Center and more.”

Ziobro said Feinstein has been an amazing mentor on those experiences, offering guidance and advice.

As the duo Nick and Julia, Goodwin and Ziobro have been performing together for a little more than three years.

“However, we’ve known each other since a very young age through community theater involvement,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin, 19, is from Baldwinsville, N.Y., and a sophomore at Syracuse University.

Ziobro, 21, is from Syracuse, N.Y., and graduated from Rider University.

Indy Film Fest set for 15th year editorial@youarecurrent.com The 15th annual Indy Film Fest will have a 10-day lineup of films from April 26 to May 5.

Hundreds of film critics, film lovers and directors are expected to visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields to view a lineup of traditional and indie films from around the world, according to a news release.

Some expected favorites are “When We Grow Up,” a film with an entirely female crew and creative team and “Film School Africa,” a documentary about a woman who leaves a Los Angeles casting director job to teach filmmaking in an impoverished South African community. However, we didn’t start performing as a duo until about December 2014, so a little over three years,” Ziobro said.

They met performing in a “13” musical.

Goodwin said she was in awe of Ziobo’s talent and they clicked immediately as friends.

“I had heard of Julia before because when she was really young she was a local celebrity,” Ziobro said. “She had some viral Youtube hits, and everyone was really excited to meet her. We performed together onstage in ‘13’ in 2011. Seven years later

Artists’ organization holds event

“I have never taken an art class because I was told I can’t make a living with art. However, here I am today, creating art full-time for the last 20 years,” said LaForge, a versatile artist whose work will be on display at the Stutz Artists Association Open House Silver Anniversary Celebration in Indianapolis April 26 to 28.

More than 60 studios filled with unique artwork will be showcased at the Stutz Business and Arts Center, 212 W. 10th St. The event kicks off April 26 with a Silver Celebration preview from 6:30 to 10 p.m., followed by the two-day Open House, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. April 27 and 1 to 5 p.m. April 28.

Artists and the building, a 400,000square-foot former car factory, will be adorned in silver. Each artist will have a unique work inspired by silver. Paintings, photography, furniture, sculptures, murals and jewelry are among the many items that will be on display and available for

95-year-old displays art

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Ralph Rancourt realized his talent for art when he was a teenager, but he admits his passion for creating artwork was ART dormant for four decades after he served in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He didn’t qualify for combat because of color-blindness, which would later determine his art medium: black and white pencil drawings.

“I didn’t pursue it again until after I retired,” said the 95-year-old Rancourt, who resides at The Barrington in Carmel. “It was something I wanted to dabble with, and as I progressed, I gained a level of experience I didn’t expect.”

Rancourt often painted portraits of pets, family members, Abraham Lincoln and 20thcentury presidents.

“I developed my technique and it’s rather unique. It’s 3-dimensional and photo quality,” Rancourt said. “When people think pencil, they think sketches, but I don’t do sketches.”

In 1993, Rancourt was diagnosed with macular degeneration in his left eye. He

was declared legally blind in that eye but continued to draw. In 2000, he developed macular degeneration in his right eye and was declared legally blind. He was only able to pursue his art passion from 1993 to 2000.

The Barrington hosted an art reception for Rancourt’s work April 4. Copies of his work were hung in the art studio and residents attended the reception.

Rancourt said his friend, Yvonne Toombs, convinced him to agree to displaying his work.

“I was rather reluctant initially, but they kept working on me until I finally gave in,” Rancourt said.

CCP presents ‘Ragtime’

MUSICAL That’s one reason Rich Phipps is pleased the Carmel Community Players is presenting the musical. Phipps, a CCP board member, will appear in the six performances of the musical April 20 to 29 at the Ivy Tech Auditorium in Noblesville.

“Even though the story is set in New York at the turn of the 20th Century, it deals with important themes that are very relevant today, such as immigration issues, racial discrimination and social justice,” Phipps said. “It has some serious subject matter and some rough language, but we hope that parents will not hesitate to bring their children and then have some important dialogue at home. I love the way the story weaves in some historical figures such as Booker T. Washington, Evelyn Nesbit, Henry Ford and others. And everyone can enjoy the magnificent musical score which won the 1998 Tony Award.”

Director Doug Peet, a Carmel dentist, said the show is very topical.

Phipps, a Carmel resident, plays the father of the upper-class family in New Rochelle.

This is the CCP’s first show since losing its Playhouse at Clay Terrace.

Although that is disappointing, Phipps said it is a blessing for the show since it is a much bigger venue, with a larger stage.

Much ado about a lot Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t understand or enjoy much of the Shakespeare assigned to me in GRAMMAR GUY high school. I hope that doesn’t ruin my reputation with my fellow word nerds. On the other hand, I love how Shakespeare invented words that are still common in our modern lexicon, including wormhole, swagger and skim milk. Although word scholars now debate how many words he actually came up with, Shakespeare certainly knew a lot of words.

That reminds me of a word duo that often gets mismatched and misused: a lot and allot. First, I want to get something out of the way and settled so we can get on with our lives: alot is not a word (unless you capitalize it and are referring to the town in India named Alot). The non-word “alot” often gets used instead of “a lot,” which means a large amount or large number. People mistakenly write things like “I know alot about robot movies.” In this sentence, the person should have written “a lot.”

Allot is a verb that means to give out, distribute or divide. It doesn’t get used as

much as its word cousin a lot, but it has its merits. Make sure to allot the same amount of Skittles to each child unless you want a riot on your hands. In this case, an even allotment can save you from a disastrous toddler turf war.

I will say, we use the phrase “a lot” far too often. It’s vague and doesn’t add much pizzazz to your writing or speaking.

Instead, consider words and phrases like a plenitude, several, heaps, an abundance and scads. As an adjective, “a lot” is a bland nothingburger (check your dictionary). The more inspiring words are like the little-used exotic spices in your spice rack that add variety and interest to your bowl of alphabet soup. By expanding your vocabulary, you make Shakespeare’s ghost proud.

In conclusion, alot isn’t a word. Allot means to give out. A lot means a large amount, and it’s kind of boring. I challenge you to use something more interesting instead. You have a myriad of options.

Miracle of the Salute Commentary by Don Knebel One of Venice’s brightest and most uplifting buildings remembers a dark period in its history, when it took a miracle TRAVEL to save the city.

In 1630, a new outbreak of the bubonic plague hit Venice. A third of its population of 140,000 was soon dead and prayers from local churches had not stopped the dying. With the survivors desperate, the Venetian Senate appealed directly to Saint Mary, promising to build a magnificent church in her honor if the wave of death subsided. It did, and the Senate immediately initiated a competition for a suitable design. Baldassare Longhena, a 32-year-old Venetian architect, won the competition, proposing an ornate octagonal structure, topped by a massive dome and entered through a triumphal arch. According to Longhena, the octagonal shape, never before used for a church, symbolized Mary’s virginity and the overall look, suggesting a crown, honored her as Queen of Heaven. A site was selected at the end of the Grand Canal across the water from Saint Mark’s

Square. Before construction could begin, 100,000 piles were driven into the ground to support the foundation. Construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute (Saint Mary of Health) began in 1631 and was completed 50 years later. The interior of the basilica, commonly called Salute, contains numerous masterpieces by Titian, who lived in Venice in the 16th century. Much of the art suggests Venice’s miraculous deliverance from the plague. A black dot in the center of the floor, directly below the statue of Mary standing atop the dome’s lantern, is said to radiate healing energy.

Every November 21, crowds walk on a temporary bridge built over the Grand Canal from Saint Mark’s Square to the Salute, where they celebrate Mary’s protection of the city. For Venetians and visitors alike, it is one of Venice’s most important days.
