ZFD uses van to display messages

Zionsville Fire Dept. public educator Vincent Randolph can get his safety messages across by simply taking a drive.

PUBLIC SAFETY His department vehicle was specially wrapped with messages by Indy’s Pro Graphix a month ago.

“We finalized the design and got it wrapped,” Randolph said. “It’s not just a logo.

There are actual messages that carry our life-saving strategy that we teach and preach every day. By actually utilizing the space that we have on that vehicle to convey our most important messages, we actually can speak to the residents of Zionsville without even saying a word, just rolling past them.”

Since the vehicle was obtained in July 2018, Randolph said it has been used to help the public education division transport items, materials and resources to events. Randolph loads materials in the vehicle and delivers items such as handouts, fire helmets, spray hoses and photo props.

The idea to wrap the vehicle with messages was developed during a brainstorming session with Randolph, Fire Marshal Joshua Frost and Prevention Inspector Ron Lipps.

“I’ve not seen it anywhere else, and I’m proud that our vehicle is one-of-a-kind and stands out,” said Randolph, who joined ZFD in April 2018 The three focus areas of “Prepare, Prevent, Practice” are on the van.

“As far as preparing, you want to make sure you check your smoke alarms, change the batteries. You want to sleep with the doors closed,” Randolph said. “As far as your prevention, that is the back panel of the van. One of my favorite parts is we have a picture full of household hazards. It simply says, ‘Can you

Randolph said at stoplights he sees people in his rear-view mirror engage in discussion.

“The driver and the passenger are pointing out the different hazards on the back of the van,” he said. “Our thought process is if they spend time to spot hazards on the van, when they get home they are going to look for hazards and correct those. That’s the prevention piece. As far as the practice piece, we always said, ‘What good is having a plan if you never practice?’ So, we talk about practicing the plan, crawling down low and checking the door for heat with the back of your hand. If you have an escape ladder, go ahead and unfurl that. I always say a fire is never a time for reading directions.”

Local car dealer taking part in recycling initiative — In a new partnership with Terracycle, Tom Wood Subaru is taking part in a new recycling initiative encouraging people to recycle three specific types of waste at the dealership. The items include disposable cups, lids and straws; candy and snack wrappers; and coffee and creamer capsules. The Subaru Loves the Earth program turns the recycled product into items like park benches, picnic tables and playground equipment. Town providing heavy trash collection – The Town of Zionsville will offer its annual Heavy Trash Collection for residents in the Urban Service District.

The collection will occur the week of May 6 on the residents’ normal collection schedule. Refrigerant-bearing appliances and tires will be collected by town staff, and Ray’s Trash Service will collect and dispose of all other items.

Residents placing refrigerant-bearing appliances and tires curbside should contact the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept. with a description and address for pick-up. Items must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on the resident’s regular trash collection day in order to guarantee collection.

Spring brush and limb collection – The Town of Zionsville’s Street and Stormwater Dept. will provide curbside brush and limb collection. The collections began April 15. This service provides Zionsville residents in the Urban Service district a means to dispose of certain pruning and yard debris. All items must be placed curbside by 7:30 a.m. on the Monday of the resident’s designated week. To view the collection schedule, visit zionsville-in.gov/civicalerts. aspx?AID=219. Size limit is 6 inches in diameter and smaller.

ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN Nearly complete, the Main Street bridge CONSTRUCTION improvement project will provide a 10-foot, multi-use path on each side of the bridge over Eagle Creek, along with a scenic overlook bumpout on each side. Decorative flower planters are planned in the spring to increase the aesthetics. The bridge project is mostly complete, and the only remaining items are some pavement repairs on the road at each end of the bridge. No closures are expected, but there will be lane restrictions and flagged traffic control.

The closure of Zionsville Road began April 1. This reconstruction project involves the widening of a one-mile section of Zionsville Road, converting it from its current two-lane configuration to three lanes by widening the existing lanes and adding a center turn lane between Technology Center Drive and 106th Street. The project also includes adding a 10-foot, multi-use pathway along the entire length of the project on the west side of the road. There also will be a 10-foot, multi-use pathway on the east side of the road from Inglenook and Zionsville Cemetery north to 106th Street. The road is closed to through-traffic in order to minimize cost and project duration. The closure is expected to continue through November. Local access for residents to and from homes and businesses will be from the north end of the project. No traffic will be permitted south of the Vonterra subdivision entrance.

CARMEL Range Line Road has reopened to northbound traffic but remains closed southbound between Eighth Street to just south of Clay Terrace, for a drainage and stormwater project.

WESTFIELD Phase 5 of the Monon Trail will be a pedestrian bridge crossing Ind. 32. Construction is under way, and temporary lane closures may occur along Ind. 32. The Monon Trail is closed near Ind. 32 until the bridge is complete.

Major utility relocations have begun as part of the intersection improvements at Ind. 32 and Ditch Road, which will include the addition of turn lanes and a traffic signal. No road closures are anticipated at this time.

Construction has resumed between 166th Street and 161st Street on Towne Road to allow for road reconstruction, which includes widening, sight distance improvements and culvert replacement. Towne Road is closed between 166th Street and 161st Street until this project is completed.

More teams head to Robotics World Championships

Robotics team Xenith was very close to disassembling its robot for the season.

Team members then COMPETITION learned they’d received a slot - randomly selected from a waitlist - to the April 24-27 VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville.

“We were all quite excited,” team member Noah Domogalik said. “None of us were expecting to go anywhere.”

As the Zionsville Community High School team prepares for the world championship, its goal is to refine skills and get its robot in the best possible shape. Team members hope they’ll be paired against easier competition than they faced at the state level, where the luck of the draw pitted them against tough teams.

The team also was plagued by unexpected static electricity at Lucas Oil Stadium during the state competition.

Xenith will compete against another ZCHS team, Tesseract, which qualified by placing 10th at the state championship in March, and a team from Park Tudor led by Zionsville resident Zach Phelps.

The three teams aren’t strangers to each other in competition.

“Being top-tier teams, we have scrimmaged together a lot,” Phelps said.

I was unloading the dishwasher the other day when I suddenly realized there wasn’t enough room in the cabiPLAIN TALK net to put all the coffee mugs away. Where on earth did they all come from?

We have mugs from many different places. I’d get rid of some of them, but they all mean something to us for one reason or another. Some came from special people.

Others help us recall special times.

My wife’s favorite is a slate-gray mug that used to have the name of a company I worked for on it. The dishwasher erased the logo a long time ago, but she still likes it. One of my favorites came from a special church, given to me by a special friend. It’s bleached white now, but I treasure it.

My all-time favorite mug has the image of a panda on the front. And on the back is the rear end of the panda. I call it my panda-rama mug. My wife mutters something about panda-monium.

We didn’t have mugs when I grew up. We had teacups; porcelain teacups with saucers. Dad used to say my grandfather would slosh some of his coffee into the saucer and

fan it with his hat to cool it. You can’t do that with a mug, he said.

Mugs have been around for a long time.

Some, made of bone, date back to the Stone Age. Back in 1475, the mugs at the Kiva Hau coffee shop in Constantinople were made of wood.

We have mugs from many different places. I’d get rid of some of them, but they all mean something to us for one reason or another. Some came from special people. Others help us recall special times.

In 1778, the British, apparently still smarting from something that happened two years earlier in the Colonies, banned coffee and mugs as being uncivilized. After all, the only dignified drink for a proper Englishman was tea, and that only when served in a proper china teacup.

Mugs got their greatest shot in the arm

in 1945 when the Victor Insulator Co. came up with the Victor Mug for the war effort.

The mug was made to military specifications: Thick, heavy and white ceramic porcelain with a rough bottom to keep it from sliding on slippery tables on Navy ships.

The Victor folks claimed you could drop a Victor mug from a height of 6 feet without it breaking.

After the war, these heavy mugs became known as Diner Mugs, also virtually unbreakable. One of the largest producers of Diner Mugs was the Red Wing Pottery Co. in Red Wing, Minn. Red Wing made tough stoneware mugs and dishes from its founding in 1861 until a lengthy strike forced it out of business in 1967.

Someone told me, however, that Red Wing is back in business making mugs. I don’t have any of those, but I do have a Snoopy mug, a Charlie Brown mug and one with Woodstock sitting on the edge of the birdbath drinking a mug of coffee.

Legion celebrates 100 years Commentary by Beth Applegate The American Legion was founded in Paris between March 15–17, 1919, by delegates from combat ANNIVERSARY and service units of the American Expeditionary Force. A group of 20 officers who served in the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I is credited with founding the Legion. AEF Headquarters asked the officers to suggest ideas on how to improve troop morale. One officer, Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., proposed an organization of veterans.

Between May 8-10, 1919, the Legion held a second organizing caucus in St. Louis. It completed the constitution and made plans for a permanent organization, setting up a temporary headquarters in New York City and beginning its relief, employment and Americanism programs.

Congress granted the Legion a national charter on Sept. 16, 1919. The first national convention convened in Minneapolis Nov. 10-12, 1919, adopting a permanent constitution and electing officers to head the organization. Delegates also voted to locate the Legion’s national headquarters in Indianapolis. A resolution was passed in support of Boy Scouts of America. Today, the Legion is the chartering agency for more than 1,700 Scouting units made up of approximately 64,000 youths. The Legion continues to support the four pillars of service and advocacy upon which it was founded: Veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism and children and youth.

The American Legion Auxiliary also was founded in 1919. It is the largest organization in the world dedicated to veteran services for women and consists of approximately 800,000 members in 9,500 communities across the United States. American

Legion Auxiliary members and volunteers help veterans and other former and current members of the military along with their families through volunteer hours, programs and an increased presence in Washington, D.C. Sons of the American Legion was founded in 1932 to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires. S.A.L. members include males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the U.S. military and were eligible for American Legion membership.

Members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion comprise the Legion Family, which has a combined membership of nearly 4.2 million.

American Legion Riders began in 1993 in Garden City, Mich., and was chartered Oct. 17-18, 2007, by Resolution 35 as voted on by the National Executive Committee of the American Legion. American Legion Riders chapters are well-known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans’ homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships.

ZMS student gives back

By Kelsey Musick news@currentzionsville.com Ella Nooning, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, is one of the hardest-working students at Zionsville Middle School, EDUCATION according to her art teacher, Jennifer Gibson, who has taught at ZMS for 17 years.

Gibson said Nooning decided to write a grant because she noticed a need for additional student resources, such as the art materials that make up the ‘art cart.’ The $500 grant allows for four of the art carts to be assembled and placed in grade-level resource rooms.

The art supplies are on a cart for portability so that they can be easily delivered to a student in distress.

“I know that middle school can be really stressful and cause a lot of anxiety because it has for me,” Nooning said. “But art has really helped me, so I wanted it to help other students, too.

Gibson was impressed by Nooning’s ability to form an idea for the grant and her ability and drive to create a PowerPoint-funding spreadsheet and presentation for Zionsville Education Foundation Director Lyle Browne.

Ultimately, the grant wasn’t funded by ZEF because it funds teacher-inspired grants, but Nooning’s grant was funded by the Zionsville Educational Services Center.

“When (Nooning) is met with a challenge, it pushes her to work harder and strive for better,” Gibson said. “It fills me with joy to work alongside her. By helping other students who may struggle with similar pressures, she is creating a legacy that will have a positive impact on future ZMS students.”

Creekside counters the corporate cement jungle stereotype by implementing walking trails, green space and more

Even the bricks at Creekside Corporate Park’s entrance conjures an image of the Village.

The quiet, nature-filled corporate park is one of the reasons Denise Pierce opted to keep her health care reimbursement company, DK Pierce & Associates, in Zionsville. She was one of the first to set up shop within the project.

“Our company has not been in other corporate parks,” she said. “However, prior to starting my own business, I worked in large corporations, and they were always located in great areas, but it was a bit more like a cement jungle. There’s something very calming about being among the woods and knowing a large portion of these woods will stay here.”

Creekside Corporate Park has 40 developable acres. Another 25 acres will remain as green space.

Pierce values the green space. Prior to moving to Creekside, DK Pierce & Associates was off Elm Street in Zionsville, next to the Rail Trail. Pierce and her employees had walking competitions at the location and participated in company wellness programs.

At Creekside, employees still walk to the Village nearly every day for lunch when the weather is nice.

In light of the woodsy setting and the custom-home appearance of the DK Pierce & Associates’ building, a passerby thought the structure was a nature center as construction neared completion.

went to the restroom and left, and we are all just watching,” Pierce said. “It had happened again, and finally on the third day, one of our employees said, ‘I’m sorry, can we help you? This is a business,’ and he said, ‘No it’s not, it’s the nature center.’ I always view that as it accomplished one of our goals.”

With the Village full and bustling with businesses, the Town of Zionsville hopes companies may consider building in Creekside Corporate Park, which is still very near to downtown. Although town officials expect larger corporations to be among the first businesses to move into the park because land must be purchased and not rented, they also expect smaller retail to follow suit.

To help spur development inside Creekside Corporate Park, the town built 8-foot walking paths on either side of the creek that lead into the park and out of the Village, and vice versa.

For many companies, the idea of using capital to purchase land and construct a building is daunting compared to renting a smaller building elsewhere. The apprehension may steer potential businesses away from Creekside Corporate Park, where there is no rentable space, but Denise Pierce said business owners should look at all options before making a decision.

“There are so many incentives with the state for economic development that companies who think they may not have the capital shouldn’t simply turn it down without investing time and effort to see if there are some incentives out there for them to build,” said Pierce, who offers herself as a resource for companies intrigued about the purchasing option.

Pierce utilized an Economic Development for a Growing Economy tax credit benefit and a Skills Enhancement Fund educational grant as incentives from the state prior to building her 18,000-square-foot company in Creekside Corporate Park in October 2017.

LETTER Proposal not fit

Commentary by Terry Anker So many of our time-tested, traditional behaviors are dismissed as valueless by one generation only to be found to be important by the next. Perhaps it is the cycle of humans to reject those things that remind us of our parents — only to be shown that our folks were right.

One could add to the list: simple human gratitude. For some, giving thanks was a precursor to every meal and a focus of most Sunday mornings. We were reminded to hold up those who had grown, delivered and prepared our food. We were urged to praise God who had created our bodies to make good use of that nourishment. And almost without fail, we were retold that many others did not have our advantages. The message was a simple one: No matter how bad we indulged ourselves in evaluation of our own conditions, we should be reminded of our good fortune.

Now, decades later, the prayer before meals has largely been erased. The civil discourse that once urged grateful restraint has been replaced by rapacious demand for divisiveness, entitlement and tribalism. At the same time, countless authors, columnists and television self-help stylists urge us to give thanks. These last few years have brought many studies about the value of gratitude. We’ve learned giving is good. Thanking is good. We are encouraged to keep journals, to appreciate those around us and to share our abundance. It seems that it makes us healthier and happier.

Thank you for reading and participating in our local community. Thank you for writing to criticize or support. Thank you for paying attention. It is important and inspires the writing, preparing and publishing of this paper.

Surviving spring break Commentary by Danielle Wilson Shoo! I just survived a spring break road trip with four teenagers and a bald husband.

I’m doing OK, thanks for asking, although it may take some time to recover.

HUMOR I’ve seen things, my friends.

For starters, I used to think that my older daughter was unique in her ability to dawdle. Always the last one out the door, rarely arriving on time, usually forgetting her glasses or charger. But no, it seems her pace is similar to many other girls her age, at least the three she brought with her. We were staying in a condo that was “For Sale” and consequently had to be out for showings. Have you ever wrangled chickens? And made sure there was not a pellet of poop left in the yard? That’s what it was like evicting these four to ensure a presentable condo. Smelly and exhausting.

Remaining on this topic, one had the unfortunate experience of dance-kicking her phone into a bay noted for large hammer-

heads. Despite the tears, I forbade a rescue attempt.

Probably the most traumatic portion of our adventure was the car ride home. We knew it would be bad, but until one has been sitting in a minivan for 19 hours with nothing but sweat and despair for company, one doesn’t really understand the stupidity of one’s decisions. Why didn’t we fly? Why didn’t we at least drive through the night?

Why on earth would we attempt to navigate Atlanta in daylight? Have my soulless ginger skills taught me nothing?

I did manage to avoid major sunburn, so there’s that, and petty squabbles were kept to a minimum. But, shoo!

Editor, I saw the article in Current in Zionsville (Sycamore Flats cover story, April 2) and I’m honestly frustrated and appalled by this appeal to residents because what Glenn Hoge and Tim Dall are proposing looks like what I see everywhere in Carmel.

Zionsville’s charm and character are not reflected in the developer’s renderings.

What I see does not “mirror separate facades already in the Village.” I see more of what already exists in the Village of West Clay and in Fishers.

Hoge and Dall claim there aren’t any apartment options in the Village. I can name several apartment/townhome complexes that currently exist in and around the Village proper: Carter Apartments, Quail Run Apartments and Manchester Square, and so forth.

The Sycamore Flats development is far too dense and, in fact, is larger than the 150,000-square-foot LIDS building on 106th Street. Plus, there are obvious drainage concerns that could impact the surrounding environment. Conservation groups must be involved before the town and community can make a decision.

I don’t deny that there is a lot of possibility and opportunity presented with the land behind the funeral home, but this is the wrong choice and it’s clearly driven by dollar signs.

I’ve been sifting through recent vacation scrapbooks to find updated photos of myself to post on Facebook.

HUMOR I found a really flattering one where I thought I looked 10 years younger than my actual 72 years. My wife agreed, and then she skipped to the next photo from our cruise.

“Who’s the old man gobbling down that sandwich?” I asked.

“That’s you, Dick.”

“That can’t be me. He looks 85.”

“You just didn’t take a very good picture that day.”

“For the record, you took the picture.

And you’re saying that between Prague and Budapest, I went from looking like we were recently wed to looking like I was nearly dead? What accounts for the big change?”

“Posing next to that attractive young waiter at the outdoor cafe made you look old in comparison.”

“I see, Mary Ellen. So, is that why you always stood in front of 300-year-old castles?”

“Good portraits also are about lighting, camera angle and the colors you are wear-

ing. And, of course, the number of pixels, whatever that means. For example, in our house you look much younger and more attractive in the kitchen lighting than in the bedroom lighting. Sorry, that was an unfortunate example.”

I think I appear a lot younger in my bathroom mirror than in Mary Ellen’s. I asked her why.

“Simple,” she said. “In your bathroom, some of the bulbs are usually burned out and the mirror is always foggy.”

“So, which one is the actual me? What do I truly look like?” I know Joan Rivers used to ask herself the same question.

“When you first get out of bed in the morning, walk under the skylight and stagger to the bathroom. Tthat’s what you really look like.”

As we took our evening walk yesterday, a neighbor remarked that I looked like I was under the weather. “No, he’s fine,” Mary Ellen said. “He’s just under a streetlamp.”

Quick launches Videopolis.tv

By Renee Larr news@currentzionville.com According to Business Insider, video will account for an overwhelming majority of internet traffic by 2021. CarNEW BIZ mel resident Jon Quick hopes his new venture, Videopolis. tv, will deliver cutting-edge video content to clients regionally and nationally.

“This new business is a direct result of the almost essential need for people who have websites and use digital media to have video these days,” Quick said. “If you look at the statistics, it’s amazing how many people will actually take action on a website after seeing video as opposed to text.”

Videopolis.tv was the brainchild of Quick and his co-founder and partner, Dave Fulton. Both men have an extensive background with video. Quick is president of Q Public Relations and Marketing. Fulton was a writer and producer for the Emmy Awardwinning “Naptown Rock Radio Wars,” a PBS documentary on the impact of rock radio.

“Dave and I have worked together many times,” Quick said. “Last fall, we decided to launch Videopolis.tv to offer video and marketing services to all types of business, large or small. (We’re) basically broadening our scope of clients and to answer an immediate need for video on digital platforms as well as traditional usage. ” The business refers to its services as “video-infused marketing.” The studios are in Zionsville.

“People can come to us and visit our studios or we will go to them and provide them a marketing analysis to determine what they need based on their budget,” Quick said.

Quick said the difference between Videopolis.tv and its competitors is the diversity within his team.

“We have people who have been in the industry for years, and then we also have millennials,” he said. “We work together and brainstorm ideas and approaches. We get opinions from all sides of experience and age groups.”

ER, urgent care center proposed

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Riverview Health has filed plans with the City of Carmel to open a freestanding emergency room and urgent care center on the west side of DEVELOPMENT town near Zionsville.

The 10,811-square-foot, 1 1/2-story Riverview Health Emergency Room & Urgent Care is proposed on nearly 2 acres of undeveloped land on the west side of Michigan Road north of Nottingham Way. Riverview would be the sole tenant.

The center is expected to provide ER services 24 hours a day and offer urgent care treatment between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. The same doctors will treat all patients, and patients will be billed according to the level of care received.

“Our patients in Westfield have really appreciated the ER and urgent care model that we’ve introduced there,” Riverview President and CEO Seth Warren said. “People are often unsure as to whether their illness or injury warrants an emergency room visit or could be treated at an urgent care. With our model, every patient sees an ER doctor but they are only charged for the level of care needed. We’re excited as we continue the process for bringing this service to the other communities in the area.”

A similar medical center is under construction in Fishers and is expected to open this fall. Riverview also

Carmel Community Players ‘Steetcar Named Desire’ arrives at The Cat

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Addison Ahrendts has a new copy of “A Streetcar Named Desire” movie. But she won’t watch it for a few THEATER weeks.

“I only saw the movie once when I was younger and I went out and bought it, but I refuse to watch it now that I’ve been cast,” Ahrendts said. “I’m going to wait until after our show and possibly regret things or love what we did with it.”

Ahrendts, an Indianapolis resident, is playing Stella Kowalski in Carmel Community Players’ production of the Tennessee Williams’ classic April 26 to May 5 at the The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

Kim Hunter won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Stella in the 1951 movie.

“Stella is very therapeutic for me. I’m familiar with some of the emotions she goes through in relationship dynamics,” Ahrendts said. “It’s to show people the personal side of a domestic lifestyle like that. I love doing the darker, emotionally in-depth characters.”

Marlon Brando had the famous role of Stella’s abusive husband, Stanley Kowalski.

Carmel resident Jonathan Scoble plays Stanley.

“It’s a challenge,” Scoble said. “I wanted a character and I got one. I hadn’t read the (play) before. I came to audition for a cold read. Someone gave me advice not to watch the movie, so I haven’t. I’ve seen snippets by happenstance because it’s such an iconic show. I’ve got some work to do, but I’ve got a grasp on him.”

Scoble said the role is easily the most complex he has had to tackle in his short acting career.

“He’s truly a character. He’s got some layers to him, for sure,” Scoble said.

Scoble started acting about 18 months ago.

“That bug bit me pretty good,” Scoble said. “I’m going project to project, very opportunistically.”

Laura Givens, a Noblesville resident, plays Blanche DuBois, Stella’s older sister who comes to live with her sister and brother-in-law in New Orleans after losing her teaching job and the family home to creditors. Blanche views Stanley as common and he doesn’t like her presence.

“It’s one of the roles I’ve always had my eye on,” Givens said. “There are a lot of dimensions to Blanche. I’ve focused on the text. It’s a rich text and Tennessee Williams gives you lots of clues. Tennessee Williams’ writing is so lyrical and it’s a pleasure to be a part of.”

Lawrence resident Adam Workman plays Harold Mitchell, who goes by Mitch.

“I was a theater major in college but really didn’t do anything with that for about 10 years,” Workman said. “I got a regular 9 to 5 job and have been back doing theater for about two years now.”

Workman said it’s a challenge to find something relatable in the character, a friend of Stanley who ends up dating Blanche.

“It’s such a famous play and movie,” Workman said. “You want to live up to that and give it justice.”

Workman recently worked with director Brent Wooldridge, a Plainfield resident who is directing his third play with CCP. “I’ve been doing theater for 25 years, at least. I’ve lost count of how many shows I’ve directed. It’s probably in the 60s by now,” Wooldridge said.

Wooldridge said the play is designed for a bigger space.

“There are some challenges there,” he said.

There are 11 cast members. Bobbi Van Howe is the producer and Charlie Hanover is the executive producer.

Try Madeira after dinner Commentary by Elizabeth Morse I’ve been in New Orleans all week, enjoying some excellent food and wine. One of the loveliest parts of WINEderlust fine dining that most of us don’t think to include normally is an after-dinner drink.

Many have properties to aid in the digestion of food and some are just a lovely treat.

One such wine is Madeira, and it’s popularity has been growing in the last few years.

Again.

Madeira is a fortified wine that’s made in Portugal. They are made of different grapes and labeled accordingly. From driest to sweetest, they are: Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey.

When serving Madeira, be sure to have it at room temperature and never serve it over ice. Pour a few ounces into a glass, ideally with an elongated, tapered bowl. This provides plenty of room for wine to display its aromas for you to enjoy while sipping.

If you’re new to Madeira, these three are winners!

Blandy’s NV Alvada 5-Year-Old Rich Madeira, $15. Not too sweet, this one boasts

walnut and dried fig flavors. With a somewhat acidic finish, this would be delish served after steak or with some strong blue cheese. Amber in color.

I love the Broadbent NV Malmsey 10 Year, $49. Reminds me of Raisinets: grapey and chocolatey with just the right amount of sweetness. This one is rich and full bodied and an excellent choice with dessert.

Golden.

My very fave is from a series of highly stylized Madeiras. Rare Wine Company NV Historic Series Charleston Sercial Reserve Madeira, $40. The idea of the series was to replicate America’s deep history with Madeira, and each wine is named for a city where the wine was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Not sweet and like an enormous mouthful of caramel.

I had never been to The Lemon Bar prior to this review, and it is the cutest little restaurant I have yet to come across.

A burst of pastel colors adorn the inside, and there is a beautiful pastry display, making this little spot perfect for baby or bridal showers (neither of which I will be participating in anytime soon, by the way).

I also sampled the mushroom brie soup ($8), which is available daily. Another favorite to try is the Thai chili Brussels sprouts, available as an appetizer ($11) or a side. Even if you don’t like Brussels, I promise you’ll like these. They’re tossed with sweet and spicy Thai chili sauce and topped with fried shallots and Fresno chilis. Yum. Suggested pairings: I would suggest The Lemon Bar Boozy Latte. It tastes exactly as it sounds — all coffee and booze (Pritchard’s Sweet Lucy bourbon, to be exact) — and there’s really not a better combination, in my opinion.

Timely lesson about time Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt If having kids has taught me anything, it’s that I’m never going to be on time for anything again in GRAMMAR GUY my life. But, if time is all relative, does it really matter? Unfortunately, yes. In our culture of scheduled meetings, being time savvy is important.

I often hear people wondering about “next Thursday.” When a corporate headhunter suggests you have an interview lunch at the steakhouse next Thursday, does she mean “Thursday a few days from now” or “Thursday next week?” “Next” is a relative term; there’s no general agreement on “next Thursday.” When in doubt, be as specific as possible and try to avoid confusion.

What about a.m. and p.m.? Great question. Some would suggest a.m. stands for “after midnight” and p.m. stands for “post midday,” but that isn’t true. These abbreviations are Latin: a.m. is short for “ante meridiem” (before noon) and p.m. is short for “post meridiem” (after noon). The Associated Press style suggests writing these abbreviations with lowercase letters and

periods after each letter (e.g. 8 a.m.).

While we still have some time, let’s discuss noon and midnight. To avoid redundancy, don’t say “12 noon” or “12 midnight.”

You can say “I left the bar around midnight,” but it would be redundant to say, “I left the bar around 12 midnight.”

Finally, we have to talk about time zones. Most of Arizona doesn’t even observe Daylight Saving Time, so why do we need to bother with abbreviations like EDT and EST? EDT stands for Eastern Daylight Time (roughly spring and summer), and EST stands for Eastern Standard Time, which is approximately autumn and winter. Do we need to specify? Probably not, because it’s just confusing. Instead, I suggest using “ET” for Eastern Time, “CT” for Central Time and so on.

Where Jesus walked Commentary by Don Knebel According to the Bible, Jesus taught in Jerusalem’s Temple courts during the week before his crucifixion. Even TRAVEL though the Temple and its courts are long gone, you can still climb the steps he used to reach them.

In 19 B.C., Herod, the king of Judea, undertook an enormous expansion of the Jewish Temple, then on a flat hilltop across the Kidron Valley from the Mount of Olives.

Workers first surrounded the hill with a trapezoidal-shaped retaining wall more than 1,000 feet long on each side. The wall, rising about 100 feet above street level, was assembled from precisely cut stone blocks.

The enclosed space around the hill was then filled and leveled, creating a platform called the Temple Mount, supporting the greatly enlarged Temple and a series of open courts. Tunnels within the filled area extended from gates in the walls to stairs leading out to the 35-acre platform, able to accommodate 100,000 people.

Temple visitors other than priests entered and exited the platform through the five Huldah Gates in the southern wall, likely named for their mole-like tunnels. The Triple Gate to the east was ordinarily used for entering and the Double Gate to the west was used for exiting. The order was reversed during periods of mourning. Massive staircases below the gates included irregularly sized steps intended to cause climbers to look down as if in prayer.

Roman troops destroyed the Temple and its courts during the First Jewish Revolt in 70 A.D. When the Muslims built the Al-Aqsa Mosque near the southern end of the Temple Mount in the eighth century, they closed the Huldah Gates. But the Triple Gate’s arches are still present, as are both original

and reconstructed steps leading to them. If you want to walk where Jesus walked, the southern steps of the Temple Mount are a sure thing.
