Companies to locate in Whitestown – REGO-FIX and Telamon have announced plans to locate in All Points at Anson in Whitestown, pending incentive negotiations. Combined, the companies anticipate employing more than 70 people. Swiss company REGO-FIX plans to build an 18,000-square-foot facility to serve as its U.S. headquarters. What happened: The council amended the Zionsville Zoning Ordinance to permit the use of LED lighting elements.

What it means: The town’s zoning ordinance was written before LED lighting became a popular energy-efficient choice.

The amendment allows LED lights or any previously permissible lights to be used in any zoning area.

What’s next: The amendments are now in effect.

What happened: The council unanimously approved a resolution confirming the establishment of an economic revitalization area and tax abatement awards for the N.K. Hurst Company.

What it means: Last month, the council approved a declaratory resolution outlining a five-year real tax abatement of 50 percent for N.K. Hurst Company, which has plans to build a 60,000-square-foot building at 106th Street and Bennett Parkway. With no one speaking at a public hearing April 4, the council confirmed the incentives outlined in the previous resolution.

What’s next: After the unanimous vote, the resolution went into effect.

What happened: The council appointed Kent Esra to the Zionsville Redevelopment Commission.

What it means: Esra, who owns Cobblestone Grill with his wife, will fill the seat vacated by Katie Culp, who recently stepped down. His term is for one year.

What’s next: The next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 25.

Barnhart enjoys return home

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Cincinnati Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart never expected to be playing a Major League Baseball exhibition game 20 baseball minutes from his Zionsville apartment.

“Playing here in Triple-A was special, but to be back here with the Reds against the Pirates, it’s really cool,” the ex-Brownsburg High School star said.

Barnhart, 25, played in the first MLB exhibition at Victory Field April 2, collecting three hits, including a double, in a 13-6 romp over Pittsburgh.

“I love playing here,” said Barnhart, who got married in the offseason and is having a house built in Zionsville. “I’m kind of biased, but it’s one of the better parks in the country, particularly in Triple-A.” The game in front of friends and family on a cold, windy day ended a busy exhibition season for Barnhart, who hit .302 in spring games.

“I started off kind of hot, hit a rut for awhile, and I guess I didn’t panic,” said Barnhart, who also had to learn to work with several new Reds pitchers this spring. “I found something at the end of spring training that

Barnhart holds a .240 average in his first two seasons (102 games). He made his debut with Cincinnati in 2014 before he played his first Triple-A game.

“You never want to see anyone get hurt, but that’s part of the reason I made it to the big leagues,” Barnhart said of catcher Devin Mesoraco’s injury. “Being able to get that experience at a younger age being 23 when I made my debut, it allowed me to gain that experience that I can help the team win in any way possible.”

Alpha Leo Club recruiting

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Alpha Leo Club is looking to add hard-working teens who want to give back to their community giving back to its ranks. The organization is a teen-focused version of the Zionsville Lions Club and seeks to encourage teens to immerse themselves in community service projects.

The club recently received a Youth as Resources grant from the United Way of Central Indiana. It plans to use the funds to help donate two books per teen in the Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home.

“They provide homes for kids from troubled families,” said Tyler Klein, Alpha Leo Club president. “These kids are behind on their education, so they are taken in by IUMCH and are given adoptive parents, so-to-speak. They help them lead better lives and become productive members of society while also providing an education.”

The Alpha Leo Club will also be volunteering with the Zionsville Brick Street Market in May. Group members participate in a lock-in style park cleanup project each June.

“We clean up the park but also play games like capture the flag. It’s a service project.

Club members do not have to be from Zionsville. Teens from Boone or surrounding counties can also join. The group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Meetings usually include dinner.

“Charlie Kimball, the race car driver, was one of our speakers,” said Michelle Shepherd, Alpha Leo Club lead advisor. “We want kids that want to do good and have fun while doing it.”

Railroad accidents form part of town’s folklore

Zionsville owes its origin in 1852 to the railroad. Town founders foresaw that the area around tracks laid back in the day for the Indianapolis Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad would draw an assortment of businesses. Zionsville was born. The booming potential for business, however, also brought a downside. With the arrival of train and interurban traffic in Zionsville, serious vehicular accidents increased greatly.

By the early 20th century, numerous accident reports related to the railroad and interurban had been filed. The reasons varied from daredevils trying to outrun a train to the intersection to speeding trains unable to cope with the track’s curves.

This photo shows a derailed car of a passenger train on July 25, 1909. The southbound train was rounding the curve north of town at high speed when all seven cars derailed. This train left the track and was scattered over several hundred yards. The baggage car was

the first to leave the track and was thrown to the right. Attached to it was the smoking car, and the coaches followed the trajectory. The cars passed through a resident’s yard and demolished telegraph poles, fences and shrubs.

The high bank kept them from turning over or from jamming together. This embankment was cited as the reason no one was killed.

Thirty-five of the 200 passengers were injured. Treating the victims on site were Drs. J.F. and O.E. Brendel. Everyone on board left on the relief train, except Magnolia Miles, who had a more serious injury. She continued her trip within 24 hours.

Group combines music, outreach

By Amanda Foust • news@currentincarmel.com Sounds of Hope, a traveling community orchestra, has begun filling Zionsville, Carmel and beyond with music orchestra that positively inspires.

Caroline Ahn, a professional composer and professor at Anderson University, recently created Sounds of Hope after dreaming of how she could combine her love for music and service.

“I wanted to show my children differences in the people around them and teach them how to serve their communities,” Caroline said.

Last October, Ahn, her husband and a friend came together to form the small performance group that has now grown to 20 young people who share a love for music. Some play in the orchestra and some sing, but all enjoy using their talents to make a difference.

“We are all so proud of these children that are using their talent to make positive impacts in our community,” said Dr. Soong Ahn, Caroline’s husband and Sounds of Hope board member.

The group has rehearsals and events once each month to not overwhelm schedules. The goal is to grow into several groups serving at

the same time, multiple times each month, in several locations.

Performances so far have been at local nursing homes, but the group is looking for future opportunities and is open to sharing its music elsewhere. They are also welcoming additional participants interested in performing.

Not all participants need be instrumental musicians. Anyone who can sing along is welcome to join. Because Caroline is a professional composer, she is able to arrange music to fit everyone’s needs.

“We will figure out ways to use everyone willing to serve,” Caroline said.

Emcee Chris Malott, a pastor at Waters Edge Church, led a “build-a-home-in-an-hour” auction. Guests bid on each component of a home using their cell phones, and an entire home was funded in less than an hour.

“Chris did a great job of creating excitement for everyone, so we again raised enough money to build another Habitat home this summer in one of our Boone County communities,” said Steve Furste, executive director of HHBC. HHBC built four homes in Boone Co. in 2015.

Three of them were built on lots on S. Meridian Street in Lebanon, where a 2013 tornado severely damaged existing houses in the area.

“We really turned a negative into a positive as the damaged homes were torn down by the city of Lebanon, and Habitat was able to acquire the lots and build three new homes for very deserving Boone County families,” Furste said.

Jacy Muse-Myers, a 24-year-old single parent of a young daughter, Avery, and the guardian of two teenage siblings following the death of her parents in 2013, is now living in a new four-bedroom home with an attached garage at 2012 S. Meridian St. Across the street is another 2015 project, the first Habitat Veteran Build, for Sgt. Aaron Hiatt and his wife, Beth. In 2005, Aaron was deployed to Iraq, returning in December 2006.

Superhero race to benefit kids

By Joseph Knoop • news@currentzionsville.com Charity run events have become increasingly common, with the good deed feeling as fulfilling as completing a lengthy run. Now runners and charity fundraiser enthusiasts can feel like proper superheroes with the Superhero 5K Run/Walk on April 23.

Presented by the Office of the Boone Co. Prosecutor, all event proceeds will go to the Boone Co. Child Advocacy Center, which works toward preventing child abuse and unnecessary trauma in subsequent legal proceedings.

All participants, especially children, are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero during the event. Participants have the option of participating in a 5K run/walk or a 1K fun run. First-, second- and third-place winners of each event will receive medals for their efforts. Those who register before the event date are guaranteed a T-shirt.

“In the past, we’ve done memorials for kids.

We still want to remember those children, but we also wanted to do something that pulls more kids out, shows that prevention can be positive,” Boone Co. CAC Executive Director Kassie Frazier said. “We ask them to dress up as their favorite superhero who would save

the day, and it’s empowering for kids to become someone like that.”

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. According to Frazier, Boone Co. is experiencing a sharp rise in child abuse investigations compared to last year. In 2015, 199 cases were investigated, while 65 cases have been reported thus far in 2016, only three months in.

The Boone Co. CAC conducts additional programs, including body safety programs taught at Zionsville schools and others, which saw the program taught to nearly 2,000 children in Boone Co. Last year, the center’s Stewards of Children program also taught 150 adult service workers how to identify and prevent child abuse.

Zionsville baby a pageant finalist

Scholarships for social media campaign – Indiana high school and college students are being encouraged to put their smartphones to good use by urging others to “Drive Now. TXT L8R”. By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com When Heather Kwiecinski learned about the Pure American Pageants for infants, she decided it might be worth entering her daughter.

It was. competition Delani Ann Gutterman was named an infant queen state finalist during a preliminary competition in October 2015 in Indianapolis. She will compete against approximately 40 other contestants at a state competition April 30.

Kwiecinski, a Zionsville resident, said Delani’s strength is her personality.

“When she is in front of people, she likes to yell, make noises and smile,” Kwiecinski said.

Delani turns 1 year old April 25.

“At this age group, it’s based on their poise and personality,” Kwiecinski said.

The winner will advance to a national pageant in Orlando, Fla., in July. There are several age divisions ranging from infant to toddler to teen to Miss (age 19 to 29) to Classy Ms. (50 and over). There are also male divisions.

“It’s a community service, Christian-based pageant,” Kwiecinski said.

She said the requirement was to do 10 community service projects or appearances from the preliminary pageant to the state pageant.

The mothers do the projects for the younger girls before the contestants start to do it themselves as they get older.

“It can be any kind of community service, such as donating to Goodwill or helping out at a food bank,” said Kwiecinski, who had some help from her husband, John David Gutterman, and other family members. “We collected pop tops for Ronald McDonald, and we donated to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We donated to another girl who is in the pageant system who got diagnosed with cancer. We made fleece blankets for Project Linus, and Delani made an appearance for Winter Festival in Carmel.”

The power of a stick of gum Commentary by Ward Degler Someone offered me a stick of Wrigley’s Spearmint gum the other day, and it brought back an old memory. It was 1943. We were deep in the grips of a world plain talk war, and a lot of things we were used to having in abundance were suddenly unavailable.

We had ration books, which were our only paths to buying daily necessities. Meat was rationed. So was sugar. My parents waited all day at the ration board to receive extra sugar coupons for canning. Our Victory gardens provided vegetables that couldn’t be found in the local grocery. We canned everything and hoped it would be enough.

Some things weren’t rationed. They just didn’t exist. Among these was Wrigley’s Spearmint gum. Chewing gum required a special ingredient that came from a distant land that was besieged by the enemy. All the gum that was made was sent to the front.

I was in the second grade that year, and the mother of one of my classmates invited me to go see a stage production of the Grimm fairy tale “Rumpelstiltskin.” I was thrilled, of course, because my mother had recently read the story to me. I wanted to see if straw could

actually be spun into gold.

On the day of the performance the woman and her son drove to our house and picked me up. At the theater we walked into the most amazing place I had ever seen. The walls were hung with pictures of actors and actresses.

Everything was a rich, deep red: the carpet, the velvet seats, the heavy curtains onstage.

As we settled into our seats, just before the house lights dimmed and the curtain rose, the lady offered me a stick of Wrigley’s Spearmint gum. I was mesmerized. I had never tasted anything like it.

On the ride home after the play, I thanked the lady – not for the play – but for the gum.

She told me her husband gave it to her when he was home on furlough from the army before going overseas.

We had a school project later, writing letters to servicemen. I wrote mine to my classmate’s father thanking him for a stick of gum.

I don’t know if he ever got it.

Volunteer firefighter Richard Ford honored for 43 years of service

What is the Sagamore of the Wabash?

According to information from the State of Indiana, the Sagamore of the Wabash award was created during the term of Gov. Ralph Gates, who served from 1945 to 1949. The term “sagamore” was used by Native Americans to describe a great man among the tribe to whom the true chief would look for wisdom and advice.

The award is the highest honor which the governor of Indiana bestows. It is a personal tribute usually given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor. Among these who have received Sagamores have been astronauts, presidents, ambassadors, artists, musicians, politicians, and ordinary citizens who have contributed greatly to the Hoosier heritage.

There is no record of the total number which have been presented, as each governor has kept his own roll; just as each has reserved the right to personally select the recipients.

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com One of the most recent recipients of the Sagamore of the Wabash award, Indiana’s highest honor bestowed cover story by the governor, is a Zionsville resident who has been a volunteer firefighter for 43 years.

“I never did anything out of the ordinary,” said Richard Ford, who was presented the award by State Rep. Donna Schaibley during the annual Firefighter’s Ball in February.

According to several friends and family members, Ford is very humble.

“He values what he does as very simple and something anyone would do,” said Zionsville Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Brian Miller. “People don’t do that anymore. You don’t get people to stop what they’re doing and help somebody.”

The 85-year-old Ford still lives in the same neighborhood where he grew up. He met his future wife, Patsy, while attending school in the building that now houses the HusseyMayfield Memorial Public Library.

After graduating from Zionsville Community High School, he joined the navy reserve and served several tours of duty. Returning to Zionsville, he began working for Swiget Lumber as a driver, and a decade later he began cabinet building.

Ford said he became a volunteer firefighter in 1973.

“They were short of help in the daytime,” he said, and Ford happened to be available then.

He drove the firetruck, which was familiar for him after driving a lumber truck for years. He had to know how to drive all six of the trucks - two pumpers, two tankers, a rescue and a grass truck - and be ready to take whichever truck was needed for the type of emergency.

At the time the fire department was made up of people who lived and were employed in town, which is what made the volunteer fire department work, according to Miller. They

were close enough to respond to an emergency and had employers who would allow these members to leave as needed. Ford recalls there were 20 to 30 men volunteering.

Ford said when there was a fire, the department would set off sirens located around the town. That was the signal for the volunteer firemen to hurry to the station to be told where to go.

“You had a blue light on your car, and you’d go rushing to the station,” he said.

Ford still goes to the station when there is a call and helps with logistics and serves as a statistician, tracking when the trucks leave and when they return. While much of the tracking is automated, Miller said that it’s an important log for the firehouse.

“We use the paper backup quite often,” he said.

Ford was the driver when Miller’s father was a volunteer fireman and was still a regular fixture at the firehouse when Miller started.

“As the younger firefighters come in, they see him as someone who’s been here for a while,” Miller said. “He was our driver (20 years ago). He took us to every fire safely.”

In 2015, Ford responded to 309 calls, 5,751 in the past 10 years. Prior to that, records were manually recorded and are very difficult to track, but Miller estimated he was probably more involved in previous decades. Because Zionsville was smaller, there were fewer runs on a weekly basis but there were more opportunities for Ford to drive.

“The guy was probably still going on 85 percent of the runs every time the pager went off,” Miller said.

“Nothing happens at the most opportune times. It’s when that pager goes off he gets up and interrupts his day and comes to the station” Miller said. “He still wakes up, he still leaves his house, he still leaves his wife.”

And Patsy Ford is not to be forgotten for her part in the recognition.

“She is just as responsible for the amount

of time he leaves the house, as well as his kids and grandkids,” Miller said. Ford had two children and has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The night of the Fireman’s Ball when Ford was recognized for his years of service, he almost didn’t attend.

“My daughter says, you’re going to win an award, I hate to tell you,” Ford said. “I had no idea what it was.”

He didn’t have any inkling as his years of service and dedication were described, and Ford said it wasn’t until they said his name that he realized the award was being presented to him.

Ford said he finds the recognition “a little embarrassing.”

“There’s a lot more people who deserve it,” he said.

But others disagree.

“He’s had an impact on a lot of people who have crossed the threshold at the firehouse, that’s for sure,” Miller said.

Ben Franklin Commentary by Terry Anker Sir Thomas Browne, an English physician and theologian is quoted in 1642 as saying, “But how shall we expect charity towards others, when we are uncharitable to ourselves? ‘Charity begins at home,’ is the voice of the world.” Like most aphorisms, this holds mostly truth but leaves a gap or two in understanding (perhaps because of its intentionally concise nature).

What is home? We’d all mostly support our own families. Perhaps, we’d help a neighbor – or a neighborhood. But, when do we imagine other humans to not be of our tribe? Is it a city line, a national boundary or a continental gap?

My bride and I took to support the newly announced Ben Franklin Funds designed to support The Indianapolis Foundation in celebrating its centenary year. Following the lead of the American statesman who left small gifts for a pair of nascent colonial cities that, thanks to compound interest, matured into a big fund with even bigger

philanthropic impact. In a nutshell, The Indianapolis Foundation has asked that 1,000 people donate $100 and 100 people donate $1,000 to generate $200,000,000 in 2016.

To start the party early, the Evening of 100 Dinners, June 15 or June 23, will bring together these donors to imagine a future.

One hundred years ago, Indianapolis did not include most of what it is today. A century from now, it might be bigger, or smaller, or gone entirely. Last night I was hanging out with two of my sisters flipping through channels. We ended up on “Magic Mike XXL” humor and began a long conversation about the many different sequels that suck. (We strongly differed on “Pitch Perfect,” by the way, but that’s a whole ‘nother column.) After a while I remembered that my almost-15-year-old son was sitting right next to me, listening to us ramble but also half-heartedly watching a stripper movie. Rated R of course, and even though the volume was barely loud enough to hear (this movie is so not about dialogue!), it occurred to me that it was highly inappropriate for a freshman in high school.

Then I realized that two nights ago I had allowed his twin to watch another adults-only movie, “Sisters,” and am seriously considering letting her attend the very risqué “Book of Mormon.” I’ve even started swearing in front of them. What. Is. Wrong. With. Me. Seriously?

Where did that Mother of the Year go?

As I expressed these views with my younger sisters, one confessed that she had accidentally taken her fourth and sixth graders to “Deadpool,” the exact opposite of a kid-friendly Marvel movie, and the other said her 3-year-old twins’ favorite is the PG-13 “Avatar.” We all agreed that we are terrible mothers.

The thing is, we really just don’t care anymore. After having more than one child, it becomes too exhausting to monitor every TV show, radio program and/or book they consume. I think eventually parents reach their maximums on the censorship allotment that they’re given at the hospital (along with those crazy mesh underwear), and decide it’s not as big a deal as it once was.

Plus, I actually trust my kids to make good decisions on their entertainment options, and if nothing else, those choices can lead to important conversations. Last night for example, one scene lead to a wonderful recollection of taking his great-grandmothers to a Chippendale show. The point is, eventually, you have to step back and hope you’ve done enough. If they choose “Archer,” at least it’s clever. Peace out.

Blind test for weight loss Commentary by Dick Wolfsie After Mary Ellen returned from a recent solo trip, she asked if I had kept to my diet while she was away. I admitted going humor to three all-you-can-eat buffets, and I gorged because everything looked so good. That was the wrong thing to say. She’d just read an article claiming that one way to lose weight is to eat your meals while blindfolded. In several experiments, people who had their eyes covered ingested 22 percent fewer calories. That number was actually much higher, but researchers decided not to count all the food that fell on the floor or dribbled down people’s shirts.

The theory behind this is simple. When you can’t see what’s on your plate, scientists say you’re “more apt to listen to your stomach.” I do listen to my stomach, and so does the entire congregation at the Heartland Church on Sunday mornings.

I tested this theory the next day while my wife was out shopping. When she got home, I told her I had been doing a little experiment to see if this calorie-reduction plan was legit.

Mary Ellen looked at the ketchup all over my face and shirt and said: “Okay, now to-

morrow see what happens when you eat blindfolded.”

Researchers claimed that cutting off any one of your senses leads to less consumption of unneeded calories. I wondered what effect it would have to wear earplugs.

“This is crazy,” said my wife. “Covering your ears will not make you eat less.”

“It’s worth a try, Mary Ellen. What are we having tonight?”

“I’m making your favorite: oven-fried coconut chicken, twice-baked potatoes and creamed spinach.”

“I wish you had waited until I put in my earplugs to tell me that.”

“Why?” “Because that sounded really good.”

The bottom line is that I have tried covering my ears, my nose and my eyes, and I have not lost any weight. Next week, I’m going to try something I should have thought of before: I’m going to try covering my mouth.

Broadway Sing-along set for ZCC April 17

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Kathy and Tim Haines like a Broadway tune and they figure so do you.

The husband and wife vocalmusic ists, who call themselves The Music Book, will hold a Broadway Sing-along at 3 p.m. April 17 at Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St. Steve Jones, the ZCC music director, will serve as pianist.

“We want everyone to sing along on every song,” Kathy said of the free event. “We’re going to do a wide variety of songs.”

Kathy said they were inspired by a trip made to Tanglewood Festival in Lenox, Mass., a few years ago, where a Broadway singalong was held.

The songs will come from Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, “The Sound of Music,” “Oklahoma,” “South Pacific” and “Carousel.”

They also plan songs from “Rent,” “Wicked,” and “Guys and Dolls.”

“We’ll have about 30 songs and we’re working on having melodies where we group them together,” Kathy said.

Kathy said they plan “A Chorus Line” dance for the song “One.” “Anyone who wants to come up we’ll have a chorus line across the stage,” Kathy said.

It’s not a requirement the audience sing along.

“Some might come because they enjoy listening to the other people sing,” Kathy said.

“More than one person has made the comment that they might lip sync.”

Kathy and Tim, former Zionsville residents, will perform a Tony Bennett tribute July 24 at Lions Park in Zionsville. They also will perform at the Indiana State Fair in a Bicentennial tribute on Indiana composers Aug. 13 in the Family Home and Arts Building.

Kathy, 61, and Tim, 67, split time between Indianapolis and Leavenworth. Their daughter, Sarah Salas, lives in Zionsville. Their other daughter, Rebecca Pearish, lives in Vermont.

Both of their daughters graduated from Zionsville Community High School.

Kathy is a trained opera singer and has performed through the years.

“My husband has very nice singing voice but had never really performed,” Kathy said.

“After he retired he joined me in my singing.”

Ramen restaurant opens in Carmel

“We travel all around the world food just to eat,” said Yeap, whose husband is also a doctor. “We have really developed a passion for ramen.

When I went to New York or Chicago, I had to eat ramen. I should have ramen here in Indianapolis.”

Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup dish.

So owner Yeap, an anesthesiologist, has recently opened Kizuki Ramen & Izakaya at 2450 E. 146th St., Carmel, in the Cool Creek Commons center. Kizuki is a chain that originated in Japan and then started in Seattle.

The only other Kizuki outside the Pacific Northwest is in Chicago.

“I went to Seattle and decided on this because I really like the taste and the way the menu is presented,” Yeap said.

She researched other ramen franchise opportunities and determined Kizuki was her top choice.

Yeap, 35, and her husband are both from Malaysia. She moved to Indianapolis in 2004

after medical school in Canada to do her residency.

Her sister, Cindy Yeap, 31, who has a master’s of business administration from the University of Indianapolis, will serve as director of operations. They both live in Zionsville.

“Being a full-time doctor, the only way I can do it is if I was able to collaborate with her,” Yeap said. “She did all hiring. Cindy went to Seattle for six weeks just following the manager and chef around, learning everything.”

She said she chose the location because

there is a lot of traffic around the center.

“This is by no means just an Asian business, but I definitely see Carmel has a huge Asian population who are going to be very interested in eating ramen,” Yeap said. “In the future, we might open more (restaurants) if we do well.”

Cindy said the restaurant seats 84, and there are 25 employees.

“I have a lot of background in food,” Cindy said. “My bachelor’s degree is in food processing.”

It’s good to be a “flexitarian” - a word that describes vegetarians who aren’t that strict and meat-eaters who are striving for a more health conscious diet. Plant-based diets have many health benefits with their emphasis on fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, legumes and nuts; this way of eating is rich in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. This aromatic, vegetarian, Indian dish, Curry Chickpea Stew, is full of flavor, easy to prepare, and it’s even better the next day!

Note: Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) are high in protein, fiber and iron.

Serves: 5 Ingredients: • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped • 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced • 3 (15-oz.) cans organic chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1/2 red bell pepper, finely cut in cubes • 2 bay leaves • 1 tablespoon curry powder • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 tablespoon minced, peeled fresh ginger • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 (15-oz) can organic tomato sauce

• 1 cup organic vegetable broth • 12-oz spinach Directions: Heat the olive oil in a medium pot over high heat. Add onion, garlic, and cook, stirring frequently, until onion is softened and slightly browned. Reduce heat to medium, and add chickpeas, red bell pepper, bay leaves, curry powder, cumin and ginger. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Stir all well for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and vegetable broth. Cover and simmer until chickpeas are soft, about 30 minutes. Add spinach a handful at a time until it wilts. Serve immediately with jasmine or basmati rice and naan bread.

ISO, Time for Three present music editorial@youarecurrent.com Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Time for Three have announced a new three-day festival this spring that will focus music on and celebrate the connections between music and the environment. From April 28-30 at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, INfusion Music Fest will feature modern orchestral compositions and special appearances by notable indie artists San Fermin, Kishi Bashi and Ben Folds. Unfortunately, the beauty of spring also means a return of red, itchy and watery eyes as well as sneezing and runny noses for allergy sufferers. To truly enjoy the vibrancy of spring, it is important to understand allergies and how to manage them.

What are allergies?

In short, allergies are the body’s way of overreacting to a foreign object in the air (pollen, for example) and fighting it with an immune response.

Allergy treatments Our first line of defense for mild allergies are the daily, over-the-counter antihistamines.

The three that I recommend do not cause drowsiness like many others: Claritin, Allegra and Zyrtec. There is no strong evidence that one is better than another, but if the product doesn’t benefit you within 3-5 days, try another one. Your insurance may even pay for medicine, making them even more affordable.

For more stubborn allergies, daily nasal ste-

roids fight more than histamine. Most insurance plans will help pay for nasal steroids, but three are available over the counter: Flonase, Nasacort and Rhinocort. There is more to using these medicines than simply squirting them up your nose, however. Ask your pharmacist for the proper usage technique.

There are also alternative ways to treat allergies: • Using a nasal irrigation product like the Neti Pot or saline spray flushes your nasal passages.

• Vacuuming often reduces dust mites.

• Getting tested by your doctor determines exactly what you are allergic to so you can avoid it whenever possible.

• Paying attention to pollen counts and allergy indexes provides advance notice of the days you may feel your worst.

Remember that it is always important to inform your doctor or pharmacist of over-thecounter medications you try. If these solutions aren’t helping, there are prescription-only options or allergy shots that may be appropriate.

The goal was to create a brighter, more modern and functional space the homeowners could enjoy with family and friends.

1. The fireplace was refinished in an asymmetrical style using new linear tile for the surround and quartz material for the face.

2. The fireplace hearth extended across the room to the new feature wall, adding additional seating and hidden storage to the room.

3. A media box was designed inside the fireplace mantle to hide behind the mounted television.

4. A new feature wall with custom lighting was built in place of the built-ins, giving the homeowners the perfect place to feature their glass collection.

5. New weathered concrete Coretec flooring and warm grey paint completed the modern space, giving it a cohesive look.

Before Background info: This Kokomo home was in need of a living room update. The homeowners built the home in 1984 and had not done any updating since.

The living room needed to reflect the modern style of the recently updated kitchen. Their children also told them it was time for an update!

Before problems: The existing space was very traditional and did not reflect the homeowners’ contemporary style. The space no longer functioned well for the homeowners, nor functioned well with today’s modern technology. The space also contained built-in cabinetry the homeowners rarely used.

The town hall of Brussels, Belgium, is one of the most impressive buildings of its kind in Europe. The city travel it serves is smaller than most people imagine.

What became the Brussels town hall was begun in the early 15th century when Brussels was one of four capitals of the Duchy of Brabant, a state of the Holy Roman Empire. The Gothic building originally included a short belfry on one end and was expanded in 1444 by adding a larger section adjacent the belfry.

In 1454, the belfry was replaced by a 310-foot-tall tower featuring an open octagonal pinnacle topped by a sixteen-foot-tall gilded statue of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Brussels.

Michael, the only angel referred to by name in the Old and New Testaments and the Quran, is slaying a dragon thought to represent Satan. An improbable local legend says the tower’s architect jumped to his death when he recognized the tower was off-center.
