Sycamore Flats proposal sparks resident concern

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A proposed development, Sycamore Flats, which is asking for 184 apartment units, a parking garage and a DEVELOPMENT retail space in downtown Zionsville, has raised enough concerns from residents to elicit more than 1,000 signatures for a petition against the proposal. The project’s developer is J.C. Hart Company.

In addition, 200 yards signs encouraging more residents to sign the petition have been distributed.

Mark Walters, a member of the Zionsville Neighborhood Action Group, said the Village isn’t anti-development but noted a planned unit development ordinance passed in 2010 for the 4-acre site at the southwest quadrant of Sycamore and 2nd streets doesn’t allow for the type of development Sycamore Flats wants to build.

“It doesn’t adhere to the PUD ordinance requirements,” Walters said.

The 2010 ordinance states suggested density at no more than 15 units per acre. The Sycamore Flats development proposes 42.5 units per acre. The ordinance also sets a building height limit at 35 feet. The Sycamore Flats proposal is 41.5 feet. The ordinance also doesn’t permit an above-ground parking garage, which is included in the Sycamore Flats proposal.

Residents also are concerned Sycamore Flats is proposed in a TIF district, which means tax revenues must remain in the district from which they are collected.

“Due to tax structure, this particular highdensity apartment complex will not contribute (any additional) dollars to the school system for the students anticipated to come to the school or the town services (like police and fire),” Walters said. “Usually, when (TIFs) are involved, it’s creating jobs. This creates no jobs. It’s creating an expense.”

Zionsville Community Schools released a summary of the projected annual fiscal impact of the proposed development. It states that in the first year, the estimated annual revenue to the school from the number of projected students living in the development at $175,727. The

projected annual expenses are estimated at $225,282, which shows a loss of $49,555.

Another concern among residents is that the average income of Sycamore Flats residents is estimated at $77,000, which developers say will bring $14 million in annual revenue to the Village each year. However, a CPA in the ZNAG reasoned that even though a person’s salary may be based at $77,000, the figure doesn’t account for taxes, bills and other expenses.

Estimated after average expenses, a person making $77,000 may have $3,750 of disposable income to spend in the Village. That number, when multiplied by the 184 units, equals $690,000 potentionally spent in the Village per year, but not all that is considered profit to Village businesses as a result of their own expenses.

ZNAG member Gary Angstadt said the developers say they are filling a need for apartments near the Village for the renter-by-choice.

ZNAG disputes that need.

“They have a perceived need. I haven’t heard of anyone saying that,” Angstadt said. “There are 896 apartment units (in walking distance) to the Village.”

Angstadt cited Hunter’s Point, Quail Run, The Reserve and others as examples of apartment complexes near the Village.

Residents plan to voice their concern at the Zionsville Plan Commission meeting at 7 p.m.

St. Alphonsus Liguori to conduct golf tournament — The Knights of Columbus at St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish will conduct the 10th annual charity golf tournament, the St. Alphonsus Cup, at 12:30 p.m. May 11 at the Golf Club of Indiana, 6905 S. 525 E., Lebanon. Hall of Fame inducts inaugural class

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com The Boone County Basketball Hall of Fame will induct its inaugural class of 18 players April 13 during halftime of BASKETBALL the Boone County Historical Society’s annual basketball fundraiser at the Lebanon Memorial Gym. The game is from 4 to 6 p.m.

“We decided our first class would consist of any Boone County basketball player who is already an inductee of the Randel Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle,” said Martha Randel, BCBHF secretary. “Since they are an inductee with that group, we also want them as inductees in our group.”

The induction ceremony will include the reading of names of all 18 inductees and the presentation of a framed certificate to inductees able to attend.

“If we found a relative of a deceased inductee, they will be introduced to accept the framed certificate,” Randel said. “We have several living inductees attending to receive their plaques during the halftime. They are excited

to be honored but also to see other inductees, players and friends who will be there.”

A life in 60 minutes Commentary by Donna Monday We’ve lost some good people in Zionsville in the recent past, and I’ve attended lots of funerals. I go to funerals, PLAIN TALK not callings. Callings make me nervous. I never know what to say. I don’t have to say much at funerals. I get to sit and listen to stories, the stories of a person’s lifetime. I’ve learned one thing about that last ritual in our honor.

It will last about an hour.

Sixty minutes. That’s what we’ve got. One hour. It matters not if we’re rich or poor, young or old, or even how we plan our exit.

It’s all the same. We get 60 minutes to be remembered. What’s amazing is not that the people who loved us will spend exactly one hour commemorating our life, but that one hour will be just the right amount of time.

Honest. It’s incredible what can happen in an hour.

It’s such a surprise to see that three hymns, three prayers, three family/friend remembrances and a eulogy will fit into that little space between one number and the next on the face of a clock. That little space also will see tears, laughter and a few resolutions among the attendees.

Sometimes, even the departed makes an appearance. My cherished friend from Bloor Lane, Mary Gillim, sang to us at her funeral

through the magic of a simple boombox recording. It was sweet, eerie and so Mary to do that.

Oftis Burrus, esteemed local lawyer (and, yes, father of Roger, Rex and Max) left a collection of fishing poles he had made. We were invited to help ourselves. Free fishing poles – how poetic, and what a touch of grace and generosity. Mine is in the garage, awaiting spring.

I sort of expected free chocolates at the funeral of George Donaldson, founder with his late wife, Peg, of Donaldson’s Finer Chocolates. Instead, we were all given a Psalm on a strip of paper. How lovely.

Sweeter than a truffle. Especially in memory of a man who read the 121st Psalm every day of his life.

Beloved teacher Lillian Potts left behind what teachers always leave behind. People.

People who never forget not just the lessons, but the kindness extended to their younger selves. That, and a son nearing 50 who admits that he “still can’t end a sentence with a preposition.” Some lessons linger.

Z’GreenFest returns for 13th year

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com On April 28, Z’GreenFest will return for its 13th year. Sponsored for the second year by Boone County Voices ENVIRONMENT for Change, the event is from 2 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. 9th St. “(It) is a festival that’s initiative is to increase environmental awareness, increase understanding of sustainable lifestyles and increase appreciation of natural waterways,” co-chair Jill Pack said.

Pack said anywhere from 20 to 30 vendors will offer information about plants, organic fertilizer, how to control the impact on waterways and more. Participating organizations include the Hoosier Environmental Council, Boone County Natural Gardeners and the Indiana Wildlife Federation.

The event recognizes Arbor Day and Earth Day. It is free and open to the public.

“We also have activities for children.

There’s educational information that’s available. We have some live-animal demonstrations,” Pack said. “It’s just a nice, outdoor way to learn some more about our

Last year, more than 500 people attended. Pack said attendance is largely based on weather, and in the case of inclement weather, the event will be conducted inside the church. Because the event is near the Rail Trail, Pack said people on the trail sometimes stop by.

Also, this is the first year Z’GreenFest has partnered with Drive Electric, which is a national listing of electric vehicle events.

The Hoosier Electric Vehicle Association will have electric vehicles on display.

Snowballs from heaven Commentary by Ward Degler We had an exciting snowball fight last Saturday. Remember? It was raining all day and then late afternoon PLAIN TALK it started snowing – huge flakes, blinding and windswept.

That’s when it started. Something started pelting our roof, hard-hitting whumps. At first we thought it was an animal in the attic. It had happened before, a family of raccoons.

This was different. We were getting hit everywhere. It would have to be 100 raccoons.

At the patio door I looked out, and then I saw it. Snowballs, from golf ball dimensions to the size of tennis balls. It was like an artillery barrage. The snowballs smashed onto the roof and exploded in puffs of white powder.

I’d never seen anything like it. Never even heard of such a thing. On Google, I explored meteorology sites and came up with a number of strange weather things. Snow rollers occur when you have wet snow in supercooled air and wind. Ice pellets freeze to snow flakes, hit the ground and start rolling in the breeze, growing larger, sometimes to basketball size. We do the same thing on a smaller scale when we build a snowman.

Snow rollers got world-wide attention a number of years ago in Siberia. Acres of giant balls of snow packed together on the frozen beach.

Two years ago, the shore of Lake Michigan was littered with tennis ball-size, ice-

covered snowballs. The National Snow & Ice Data Center, a nonprofit in Boulder, Colo. that keeps an eye on Arctic and Antarctic weather, describes a phenomenon called graupel, ice pellets that freeze onto giant snowflakes and create marbles of ice.

But no one says anything about snowballs raining down from above. Later in the evening after the snow had stopped, I looked outside. There were several inches of snow on the ground, all of it deeply pockmarked.

I’m no stranger to freaky weather. I’ve mowed my lawn on Memorial Day in Minnesota in a snowstorm. You can’t begin to imagine what grass clippings mixed with snow tastes like when the wind whips them into your face.

I’ve seen the aftermath of a hailstorm in the Sandhills of Nebraska. The hail came down in stones the size of baseballs and literally tore the roof from my son-in-law’s ranch house.

I’ve had my wristwatch magnetized to a dead standstill as I drove through a town that had just been ripped apart by a tornado. In the same town I saw a terrified but otherwise uninjured cow in a tree, and a wheat straw driven like a nail through a fence post.

But until last Saturday, I’ve never been under attack by snowballs from heaven.

Lions Easter Egg Hunt returns

After Prom provides safe fun

For the 28th consecutive year, the Zionsville Lions Club will conduct its EGGnormous Egg Hunt. Activities SPRING begin at 9 a.m. April 20 at Lions Park, 115 S. Elm St. This year, the club will increase its egg count to 20,000. Last year’s count was 18,000. Eggs will be filled with candy and prizes. The candy will not contain chocolate or peanuts.

“The event keeps growing year over year and getting bigger and bigger,” Zionsville Lion Mike Heffner said.

Age groups are 3-4, 5-6 and 7 and older.

An egg stroll will be offered for kids younger than 3 and their parents. It will be set up around the gazebo. The egg stroll will be open from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Following the egg stroll, the other age groups will start in 15-minute shifts.

Although the first egg hunt doesn’t begin until 10 a.m., the event begins at 9 a.m. with a for-donation-only pancake breakfast in the shelter house. At 9:30 a.m., eggthemed games will be offered.

Another major event is the rubber duck

Parents are often concerned about kids’ safety on prom night. That’s why Zionsville Community High School is ofEVENT fering After Prom, a free postprom event at ZCHS. The April 13 party is for juniors and seniors to celebrate together with food, beverages and a casino offering a variety of prizes.

“I think parents feel very safe and secure that their child is safe and secure,” said Jill Sibila, president of Zionsville After Prom.

After Prom is a tax-exempt entity separate from other organizations supporting the schools, such as the PTO and the Zionsville Educational Foundation.

More than 200 volunteers spend nearly six months soliciting donations. They also chaperone and decorate the high school.

This year’s theme is “Passport Palooza,” taking students on a cruise around the world. Different areas will represent either a tropical destination, France, Mexico, Africa or Ireland. Activities will include karaoke, silent disco, bounce houses and photo opportunities.

“What happens with those is we have a lot of our local merchants donate prizes for kids to come into the store and get,” Heffner said. “They’ll pick up a rubber duck which has the name of the vendor, and they go to the store with their parents and collect the item.”

Some eggs in the egg hunt contain prize certificates for items such as large, plush animals, hats, gift certificates and Kindles, among other items.

The event is free and registration isn’t required. Parents are encouraged to bring a container to collect eggs. For more, visit zionsvillelions.com.

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on prom night, the public can preview After Prom a few hours before students arrive. Young children can enjoy inflatables in the gym. Committee members estimate approximately 750 people will preview the decorations.

“The whole event is structured around providing a safe, alcohol-free and drug-free fun event for the students,” Sibila said.

“We’re also putting a caveat in there: Stay until the end of the evening.”

Before After Prom ends at 3 a.m. Zionsville After Prom will award a minimum of five $500 scholarships to students who are present.

The goal of the Zionsville Sidewalk Poetry Contest is to place poetry throughout the town. It started in 2016 when the ARTS Zionsville Cultural District Board of Directors searched for ways to connect with the town.

“We entertained several different ideas and possibilities, but the sidewalk poetry rose to the top for many reasons,” said Carla Howie, ZCD board president. “There is a strong, active poetry group, Brick Street Poetry, that meets monthly at the SullivanMunce. Indiana is home to a poet laureate, Joyce Brinkman, and we would be the first to bring this kind of art program to Indiana.”

A year later, the contest was launched.

“We had to get guidance from St Paul, Minn., as they have a long-standing poetry sidewalk program,” Howie said.

The contest has first- and second-place winners in the adult and youth categories.

In its first year, nearly 300 entries were received. In 2018, the number was slightly

“The poems are adjudicated by a separate panel of seasoned poets from the Brick Street Poetry group,” Howie said. “The criteria to be considered for selection are that the poems must not be political or religious in nature, have any derogatory or sexual connotations and be six lines in length.”

Two of the winning poems have been stamped near downtown Zionsville at the corner of Ash and 3rd streets. The other two winning poems have been stamped at the corner of Cedar and 1st streets near Lincoln Park.

“The plan is to place poetry throughout the town,” Howie said. “The superintendent of streets and stormwater will notify us when there is an opportunity to replace a section of sidewalk, and a stamp of poetry will be placed in instead.”

Kids’ triathlon returns to town

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com The 11th annual Kids TRI for Kids is set to kick off in late May, with the Zionsville event scheduled for July FUNDRAISER 4 at the Zionsville Aquatics Center. When the event started in 2008, it was a fundraiser for a local USA Swim Team.

“Bryan Boggs, Brad Osborne and Ed Merkling came together and started Kids SPRINT - Swim Pedal Run Indy Northside Triathlon.

We had 80 kids and raised about $4,000 for some local charities,” said Meg Gates Osborne, Kids TRI for Kids Triathlon Series founder and executive director. “Bryan had a small Zionsville neighborhood triathlon, so we combined these and added one at IUPUI and started Kids Racing for Kids, which we changed to Kids TRI for Kids. We started supporting Best Buddies of Indiana, too.”

The event has grown from one race with 80 participants and $4,000 raised that first year to six races with 800 participants and $40,000 raised in 2018.

Osborne said Kids TRI for Kids is about inspiring youth to have “confidence in themselves.”

“Not for winning but finishing. We realize that it takes repetition to create habits,” she said. “We hope that the kids will do five to six races a season, creating more confidence in themselves. They will learn how to do transitions better, how to race better.

The Zionsville West Middle School chess team won the Scholastic Chess of Indiana state championship ACHIEVEMENT for grades eight and below.

The competition was March 23 in Muncie.

“As much fun as I have coaching the kids, it’s really a matter of their investment and seeing if they’re interested,” coach and team leader Michael Johnson said. “Middle school is a time when they have the intellectual ability to really progress in the game.”

Four years ago, Johnson led the elementary students to a state chess title when many of them were third-graders.

Johnson said the skills students learn through chess transfer to life, such as time management and resilience.

The ZWMS team consists of sixth-grader Adriel Klopper and seventh-graders Naitik Rambhla, Sunay Konnur and Allie Johnson.

Allie is Michael’s daughter.

Rambhla and Allie were part of the Eagle chess club in kindergarten. Konnur joined the team in fourth grade. Klopper was part of the chess club at Stonegate and joined

“Every game you lose, or almost lose, you usually learn something,” Allie said.

“We’ve learned to develop in pressure situations,” Rambhla said. “It’s like a mind game.”

Riley contest brings together art, history and genealogy

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Everyday life in Zionsville was captured by photographer Lloyd Riley from the 1940s through the COVER STORY 1960s, and SullivanMunce Cultural Center leaders hope that today’s life will be captured and shared with the museum for the benefit of future generations.

“Collecting items from today leaves a legacy to the students, researchers and community members of the future,” said Kristina Huff, museum director for SullivanMunce.

An exhibit of Riley’s work, “Through the Lens,” will be on display at the museum from Nov. 15 through Feb. 22, 2020. Part of the exhibit will include photos by local photographers, who are encouraged to submit images as a way to capture life in presentday Zionsville. Awards will be presented to best adult, teen and youth photographs that capture the spirit of the community.

Riley’s Zionsville photos were donated to SullivanMunce by the Pike Township Historical Society, which obtained the collection from his family. The photos were cataloged and protected by PTHS. SullivanMunce volunteer John Ulmer estimates there are several hundred unique photos in the collection.

After looking through the photos, Candace Ulmer, development and welcome center volunteer, said she wanted to honor Riley’s work.

“This is a history of Zionsville that most people have never stumbled upon,” Candace said. “It’s a treasure trove, really.”

Candace and her husband, John, had a personal connection with the Rileys through high school football games promoted by the Shriners.

“He was the most likeable, lovable person I think I’ve ever met,” Candace said.

Candace added that Riley’s persona helped him bring out a level of comfort and joy in his subjects.

“You can just see it in all his photos,” she said.

Riley was born in 1910 and died in 1995.

He is buried beside his wife in the Zionsville Cemetery. He took photographs for local newspapers and magazines but didn’t identify himself as a photojournalist. He visited Zionsville frequently, capturing events such as parades, beauty pageants and church and high school activities.

Huff said it’s important to preserve those type of events.

“Materials that represent the lives we live today may seem commonplace today but will be treasures years from now,” she said.

“Taking a little time to preserve the details around us gives us the opportunity to take a little time and focus on the elements of our community.”

SullivanMunce Executive Director Cynthia Young said the exhibit and photo contest encompasses all aspects of the cultural center: art, history and genealogy.

“It’s not always easy to do that,” she

said. “I think it’s cool to celebrate (Riley) and what he did. It brings the community together, too. He had a vision that those things were important to capture.”

One of the biggest challenges with the Riley photos is determining who is in each photograph. John’s goal is to identify at least a third of them. It’s a reason subjects must be identified in each contest photo, which will help volunteers like the Ulmers and Huff better categorize museum materials in the future.

“We are thrilled to capture that ‘who, what, when, and where’ information right at the beginning of the process before names, faces and dates grow a little hazy,” Huff said.

Photos for the contest should be submitted online at sullivanmunce.org/lloyd-rileyexhibit.html by Oct. 12. Submissions should include information clearly identifying people, subject and location.

The SullivanMunce Cultural Center is dedicated to supporting the areas of art, history and genealogy. The Lloyd Riley exhibit will touch all facets by focusing on the art of photography, the history of the town and the genealogy of local residents. All three areas of SullivanMunce are undergoing unique, new developments this year: Art: Summer camps for youth and classes for all ages are offered throughout the year in the areas of ceramics, painting and drawing. For the first time, a metal-smithing class has been added for adults and teens. All tools and equipment are provided to create small items like jewelry, plant markers and bookmarks. The four-week class is open to beginners or those with some experience in using copper, brass and bronze to create one or two different items during each class.

History: In fall 2018, SullivanMunce launched an online historical collection with a sampling of what is available in the museum archives. Old photographs, paintings and documents show a glimpse of materials that fill the building’s second floor.

“People don’t normally get to peek in the drawers and on the shelves,” Museum Director Kristina Huff said.

Volunteer John Ulmer has been instrumental in compiling, photographing and continually adding items to the online database. Roughly 350 items are available for viewing in the database, and they are only a fraction of the thousands of pieces in the museum.

Genealogy: For those wondering what to do with their DNA results, a volunteer genealogist is available on Wednesdays by appointment to assist with research.

Zionsville resident Jennifer Van Horn turned her interest in genealogy into a retirement passion and is now a certified genealogist.

Striking balance Commentary by Terry Anker Can we get too much of a good thing? Is it possible to overdose on perfection? These, and questions like them, have vexed us since the very first good thing. Perhaps the challenge has been that both measures are subjective. What may be terrific to some might be considered unpleasant, even revolting, to others. And how much is enough, or more than enough, assuredly relies upon our individual capacity to process.

Take exercise, as an example. All would agree that physical activity does the body good. In fact, a cogent argument could be made that we Americans have fallen behind on what might be a sustaining level of movement. But what might be required for some might be excess to others. Our age, general health and physiology each have significant impact on the need. A few indulge in almost compulsive workouts – we push our bodies to the breaking point and beyond. Athletic injuries and repetitive movement damage our bodies while offsetting any measurable benefit from the effort.

Likewise, food nourishes our bodies. Without it, we wouldn’t last long. And yet, we have a tough relationship with it. It seems we either eat too much or too little. For many, our bodies struggle to make use of the abundance of processed sugars and empty calories.

Exercise and food may be the ideal ying and yang of our corporal selves. If we properly manage the everchanging and moving equilibrium, our lives are extended and improved in countless ways. Failure quickly delivers the opposite. Can we hope to find balance between hedonism and Puritanism? And if we do, can we hope to keep it?

Tears, roundabouts and laughs Commentary by Danielle Wilson My foray into politics two columns ago proved to be interesting. Mistake made, lesson learned, so let’s get back HUMOR to my mundane life as a working mom of four!

I must preface this tale of motherly despair by first stating I am not an emotional person; my husband Doo actually believes I have no soul. And on this particular morning, I was running on five hours of sleep and had already spilled my coffee while taking a roundabout like I was a Formula 1 driver, which I am not.

Suffice it to say, I was not in a good place as I drove to school, so I switched from depressing NPR to RadioNOW. That stupid “Tequila” song came on, and then bam, out of nowhere, it hit me: My babies are going off to college! (I experienced a similar revelation at Chick-fil-A with my oldest).

Point of fact, our 17-year old twins are not

babies, nor have they been the babies for quite some time. Our youngest robbed them of that honor when she came along. But for whatever reason, at that moment, I realized that soon I would not be witnessing their Wonder Twin powers activate in the form of Australian accents and witty jabs. I would go months without seeing their sweet faces, now so much different than their pudgy toddler ones. Our Corinne-tin-tin and Hurricane Andrew will be on their own, making decisions and living their lives. Without me.

The tears burst forth just as I was taking another friggin’ roundabout, followed fairly quickly by laughter. We did it! Three down, one to go.

Doo might be right. Peace out.

READERS’ VIEWS Response to Wilson Editor, Danielle Wilson is at it again, blathering an emotional rant toward those who support our president in her March 26 column. Her sole “qualification” is that of a 20-year mother, as if that alone gives her license to criticize anyone who disagrees with her liberal views.

Cambell’s cartoon insulting, ignorant Editor, I found Tim Campbell’s March 26 illustration depicting an unvaccinated child hooked up to an IV covered in spots insulting and ignorant. He also misspelled “antivaxxer” - the correct term is “vaccine safety advocate.”

Parents who question vaccine safety are the ones who take the time to actually read the vaccine inserts, scientific studies and educate themselves before blindly following the CDC-recommended immunization schedule, which is currently 72 doses before the age of 18 (by comparison, in 1983 it was only 24 doses). They know that the VICP (Vaccine Injury Compensation Program) has paid out more than $4 billion to families

with vaccine-injured children. They know that pharmaceutical companies cannot be sued and that taxpayers pay these families.

Even more alarming is that a 2009 Harvard study found that only 1 percent of adverse reactions are ever reported; therefore, vaccine injury and death is much greater than we realize.

Given these statistics, parents have a right to be concerned. It’s not about being “anti-vax” but about educating ourselves, advocating for safer vaccines, demanding unbiased studies free from conflicts of interest (aka pharma-funded) and ultimately wanting informed consent — every patient’s right.

Manipulating data isn’t science Editor, I have to take issue with Steve Simon’s March 5 letter to the editor advocating the Green New Deal. I am not a climate change denier by any means. Climate change has been happening for thousands of years, and I expect it will continue to do so. But I am a climate “science” skeptic, for good reason.

Al Gore’s hockey stick theory was debunked years ago. Most, if not all, of the predictions of climate models have been way off the mark. So-called climate scientists have been caught falsifying data and outright lying to support their “science” (aka, agenda). Manipulating data to support an agenda is not

science.

Despite the failures of their “science,” climate zealots and their political allies continue to push for Draconian, economically destructive measures that, by their own admission, will have little effect on the climate.

One question nags at me: Why are the climate zealots not advocating for commonsense measures to adapt to, and deal with, the changes that they claim are coming?

Adopting the Green New Deal won’t really help the environment enough to stop climate change, but it will bankrupt this nation and turn us into another Venezuela.

Working at my hobbies Commentary by Dick Wolfsie For many years, I have neglected my hobbies. Sure, I like to read and work crossword puzzles, but these are HUMOR not really hobbies. When my wife and I go on vacation, we enjoy zip lining, parasailing and windsurfing, but there is just so much of that you can watch before it gets very tiring.

This year, I made a New Year’s resolution to learn some new skills. I made it in March, which is odd because one of my other resolutions was not to procrastinate anymore.

My goal was to have three new interests or activities to fill my free time.

In preparation for an upcoming trip, I downloaded an app to learn conversational Spanish. This week’s lesson was to translate the following sentences: • My cat does not shower with me.

• I change my pants twice a year.

• My grandfather likes to watch the young girls.

When we get to Peru, I’ll try to work these useful phrases into a conversation.

Wish me luck.

I’m taking a drawing class, although I have no aptitude for art. My instructor says

it’s not about talent, it’s about developing a skill. So, I used my developing skill to sketch our muscular male model. When I showed it to Mary Ellen, she said it was very good, and now she’ll be attending future classes with me.

I’ve taken up pickleball — a combination of tennis, racquetball and Ping Pong, played on a section of a tennis court. This is great for older folks like me. None of the four seniors in my group can remember our score — which is announced before each serve, assuming we can remember whose serve it is. We spend a lot of the game disagreeing about the score, reintroducing ourselves for the eighth time and discussing the latest time we can arrive at MCL to get the early bird special.

Well, I gotta go. I should practice one of my new avocations. Or maybe I’ll just chill out in front of my computer. I don’t want to keep my buddies waiting for me to take my turn in Words with Friends.

Cycling love spurs shop

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Bryan Boggs never dreamed of owning a bicycle shop.

“But being a cyclist, when NEW BIZ Nebo went out of business, I felt we needed something up in this area,” Boggs said.

The Zionsville resident is co-owner, with Brian Gootee, of Gray Goat Bicycle Co. North, 4335 W. 106th St., Suite 900, Carmel. The shop, near the Carmel and Zionsville border, opened March 5 in the former home of Nebo Ridge Bicycles, where Boggs was a regular customer.

Gootee, a Waverly resident, is owner of Gray Goat Sports, which also has shops in Indianapolis and Franklin.

“I work at Eli Lilly, so I’m just helping with financing and (am) part-owner of this Gray Goat North,” Boggs said.

Boggs had worked with former Nebo Ridge owner Tim Casady at Lilly before Casady left Lilly.

“I’m not a bike-shop guy. That’s why I partnered with Brian Gootee,” Boggs said.

“I’m a regular enthusiast for biking and supporting the cycling community. I know there is a cycling program trying to get into the Zionsville Schools and we’re going to be supporting that as much as we can.”

Boggs said Gray Goat is continuing to conduct Tuesday and Thursday evening rides, sponsored by the Central Indiana Bicycling Association, as Nebo Ridge previously did.

a bike shop like this,” Boggs said. “On nice days we’ve had anywhere from 70 to 80 to 100 riders. We plan to carry that on and be good stewards of bicycling and proponents of cycling in the Zionsville and Carmel area.”

The shop has two full-time employees, including General Manager Chris Richter, a Carmel resident, and four part-time employees.

Boggs said Richter owned a Fishers bicycling store he sold years ago.

Boggs’ wife, Sharon, is a first-grade teacher at Union Elementary. They have two sons, Ian, 26, and Beau, 23. Ian, a former Indiana University swimmer, is a part-time employee at the store. Ian also coaches triathletes and is an assistant Zionsville Swim Club coach.

Mick Miller is a self-taught scratch golfer.

He plays in a senior league and two other leagues and sometimes plays PROFILE 27 holes a day.

And he plays with one arm.

A stroke 15 years ago rendered Miller’s left arm immobile. A doctor said he needed exercise and suggested activities that require walking, such as golf. He took up the game and, to his surprise, truly enjoyed it.

Miller said he can’t hit a drive as far as a lot of players. But George Emerich, who works part-time with Miller at the Zionsville Golf Course, said he’s good at all aspects.

“Golf was not meant to be played with one arm,” Emerich said.

After moving to Brownsburg from Wabash 13 years ago, Miller found himself near the Zionsville Golf Course and decided to stop in.

“I came hobbling up to the door,” he said.

The golf course superintendent at the time, Orlin Coleman, brought him a cart, and they struck up a conversation. Coleman eventually offered Miller a part-time job, and Miller has been with the golf course ever since. “(Coleman’s) why I’m here,” Miller said.

Feinstein teams with CSO, Songbook Academy alums for concert

So, he figured it’s only fitMUSIC ting that he called on the Center for the Performing Arts’ resident orchestra for a concert titled, “That’s Entertainment.”

Feinstein, the artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts and the Great American Songbook Foundation, is performing with Carmel Symphony Orchestra for the first time since 2012 at 8 p.m.

April 13 at the Palladium.

“The experience of working with the orchestra is something that I’m very much looking forward to,” Feinstein said. “I’ve put together a program that includes one or two pieces that actually repose in our Great American Songbook archive that will be fun to give people a taste of some of the arrangements we have in our collection that will be brought to life by the orchestra. To collaborate with the orchestra and community is exciting for me.

“It’s part of the realization of a dream to continue to engage the community in every way with these musical endeavors. Artistically, it’s a very fulfilling collaboration.”

The program will pay tribute to the classic MGM musicals and include songs made famous by Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.

“The theme gives me the opportunity to pick musical arrangements that will evoke the grandeur and majesty of the great musicals and the great songwriters,” Feinstein said. “Of course, it’s a concert in Indiana, so I’ll be including Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael.”

“That will be fun to be with them again,” Feinstein said. “One of the things I love is to see their progress and watch their journey and see where they go in their lives. Not everyone who participates in the Academy has the intention to make music or musical theater their life’s work. But the music is important enough to them (that) it’s integrated in some way. It’s always exciting to see where their path takes them but also help as I can, and all of us can at the foundation.”

Feinstein said Songbook Foundation Executive Director Chris Lewis and his staff stay connected with Songbook Mulligan Academy alums.

Janna Hymes became the CSO music

director in 2017, so this will be her first appearance with Feinstein.

“I’ve been a big fan for many years,” Hymes said. “I grew up in New York and some of my extended family have worked with Michael and know Michael. But I’ve never worked with him or met him, either.

So, I’m really excited about this incredible concert coming up and the opportunity to work with someone who is such a fantastic artist and, of course, a very important person in Carmel.”

Hymes said there will be some classic standards such as “Night and Day” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”

“It’s a real array of standards, which is his speciality,” Hymes said. “These are arrangements he has for him when he performs with an orchestra. It’s music that has Broadway themes, a little bossa nova, some pop chart songs, some show tunes, some ballads. It’s a real combination of moods, lots of love songs. The songs are some of my favorites, actually.”

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 1111 W. Main St., Suite 140, Carmel What to get: Voodoo Pasta Price: $14 Anna’s take: I was going to order a burger at Bar Louie, but burgers seem to have become one of my main staples lately.

I figured I should try something different, so I ordered the Voodoo Pasta. This is a creamy blend of cavatappi pasta, jumbo shrimp, andouille sausage and red and green bell peppers mixed with a house-made voodoo

sauce. It’s not overly spicy, but it has a nice burn to it. The only thing I would add is more shrimp, but I get a bit greedy when it comes to seafood. The plentiful andouille sausage made up for it.

Suggested pairings: I’ve been on a bourbon kick lately, so I ordered Bar Louie’s New Old Fashioned, which is crafted with Bulleit Rye, Angostura bitters, pure cane syrup and topped with a maraschino cherry and an orange twist.

Behind bars: The Spicy Boi Get it at Anthony’s Chophouse, Carmel Ingredients: 2 oz. Boodles gin, 1 oz. jalapeno, pineapple and cucumber simple syrup, .75 oz. lemon juice, Serrano pepper slice Directions: Add ingredients to a shaker tin and shake with serrano pepper slice. Strain into a coupe glass.

ZCHS to stage ‘Fools’

By Heather Lusk editorial@youarecurrent.com It has a message of acceptance and living life to the fullest, all wrapped in a comedy about people cursed to be THEATER idiots.

Neil Simon’s play, “Fools,” will be presented at Zionsville Community High School with a cast of 20 students from April 18 to 20. Showtimes are 7 p.m. each evening.

Kate Luke, who plays the female lead Sophia, said the message of living life is similar to last year’s show, “Our Town,” but in a different context.

“This is the polar opposite,” Luke said.

Her character’s parents hire a schoolteacher to educate her, but he soon discovers that a curse of ignorance has been cast upon the town. “‘Our Town’ left you in a more somber mood,” Luke said. “This one they present in a completely different way.”

Luke and Amy Brige, who plays Lenya, want the audience to enjoy the farce.

“I want them to be able to laugh,” Birge said. “I want them to be happy.”

“I discovered I love acting,” she said.

The cast includes 10 scripted characters and 10 ensemble characters who perform self-created skits between scenes.

“All of us have our different talents outside of theater that brings us all together,” Luke said.

This is the second production directed by English teacher Katie Morario.

“She has a way of running rehearsal that brings everyone together,” Luke said.

Tabla drummer to perform

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zakir Hussain has collaborated with George Harrison, The Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Yo-Yo PERCUSSION Ma and jazz legend Pharoah Sanders.

The Grammy Award-winning tabla drum star from India will bring his Masters of Percussion show to the Palladium in Carmel at 7:30 p.m. April 18.

“It’s always a challenge to play for a new audience and anxiously await their reaction to it,” he said.

The 68-year-old said he was last in the Indianapolis area in the mid-1990s.

“I was a young man with no gray hair and I was playing with a kind of a combo group with a jazz guitarist named John McLaughlin,” Hussain said of the guitar legend. “Once before that, I came to play with (sitar legend) Ravi Shankar.”

The concert is instrumental with some scat singing.

“Most of the learning we received in India as far as rhythm is also vocalized,” he said.

“It has a rhythmic, melanotic element involved in it. There are no songs, but maybe I

should do my Frank Sinatra cover.”

Hussain, who has homes in India and California, said he hopes his performance will encourage audience members to seek out other tabla players.

Joining Hussain for the concert are the Kerala Drummers of India’s southwestern coast.

“There is this village where everyone in the village drums,” Hussain said. “They have practiced rhythm way of life for more than 2,000 years.”

Hung up on hanged Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Do you remember William Hung? He auditioned for “American Idol” back in 2004 and became famous GRAMMAR GUY for how delightfully bad his performance was. Hung’s version of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” for the judges was so bad, it actually endeared the nation to him. As a result, Hung had 15 seconds of fame performing the equivalent of lousy karaoke on various television shows.

That’s not the type of “hung” I want to tackle today. We’re here to discuss hang, hung and hanged.

“Hang” is a present tense verb with a handful of meanings. It means to fasten, to let droop, to pay close attention, or attach tightly to something. It’s also an informal term for spending time with friends. Hang your coat on the hook. Hang out with the wrong crowd, and you’ll end up in jail. I like to hang from the monkey bars. I’m hanging by a moment here with you. You don’t really need me, but you keep me hanging on. Yes, those last two examples were song lyrics.

“Hung,” on the other hand, is the past

tense form of “hang.” Almost always, “hung” is the proper past tense version of “hang” to use in your everyday vocabulary.

William hung the curtains. We hung onto every second of William’s terrible audition.

As a result, Hung hung out with other D-list celebrities. The public hung William out to dry after his novelty act wore off.

When it comes to “hanged,” we need to be very careful. It is the past tense and past participle of “hang” and should only be used when you’re talking in the past tense about a person who got put to death via hanging. According to the AP Stylebook, “One hangs a picture, a criminal or oneself. Use hanged for executions or suicides; use hung for other actions.”

That’s clear enough for me!

Remember it this way: curtains are hung and outlaws are hanged. I’m going to wrap it up because when I have to wait too long for meals, I get hangry, and you won’t like me when I’m hangry!

Amsterdam’s lively Dam Square Commentary by Don Knebel Dam Square is among Amsterdam’s most popular tourist destinations, featuring a controversial war memorial.

TRAVEL In 1270, Dutch settlers built a bridge that also served as a flood-control dam over the Amstel River near where it enters IJ Bay. Dam Square, a plaza west of the bridge, became the central market and cultural hub for the growing trading city of Amsterdam, reportedly named for the Amstel Dam. By the 17th century, the Dutch Republic dominated world trade, and Amsterdam was the wealthiest city in Europe. Just east of Dam Square, De Wallen, Amsterdam’s famous and still-active red light district, was entertaining sailors from around the world.

In 1655, Amsterdam dedicated an enormous City Hall along the west side of Dam Square, said to have been the largest administrative building in Europe at the time.

On May 7, 1945, two days after Germany had surrendered control of the Netherlands, frustrated German soldiers sprayed machine gun fire into a crowd celebrating in

Dam Square, killing at least 22 and injuring dozens more. In 1956, the government of the Netherlands erected the National Monument on the east end of Dam Square to honor the Dutch victims of World War II. Many citizens saw the monument as unnecessarily suggestive of the activities in nearby De Wallen. In the late 1960s, hippies from around the world saw the monument as a symbol of Amsterdam’s well-known tolerance and began sleeping and engaging in all sorts of activities in Dam Square.

Today, Dam Square is one of the liveliest public squares in Europe. The old City Hall is now one of the three palaces of the Dutch royal family. Madam Tussauds Wax Museum, the first outside Britain, is on the south side. The hippies are long gone, replaced by fashionable shops and cafes, street performers and, of course, pigeons.
