ZFD battles house fire – The Zionsville Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire at a home on Sugarbush Drive the night of March 29. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the second floor and roofline, and they made an aggressive interior attack to bring the fire under control. Residents were not home at the time of the fire, but three family pets perished. Officials estimated that the fire caused up to $200,000 in damage to the home.

Town considering changes to Creekside zoning plan

The Town of Zionsville is considering zoning changes to 75 acres of town-owned land in Creekside Corporate development Park that would be more restrictive than the current uses allowed in the planned unit development, which was adopted in 2011. Proposed changes also call for the addition of park amenities, including walking trails and half-court basketball, on a small portion of the site.

Since approving the original PUD, the town has gathered additional information on the market, topography and drainage at the site, which is along 106th St. east of Zionsville Road.

The town’s redevelopment commission – which purchased the land from Dow Chemical Company through a partnership with Zionsville Community Schools in May 2013 – does not want to fill in the wooded ravines and level the area, actions that were assumed to take place when the original PUD Ordinance was originally adopted.

“We are requesting to rezone from a PUD to a PUD to reset the document,” said Wayne DeLong, Zionsville’s director of planning and economic development. “There are actually less uses, actually downzoning from what is permitted right now. The town is proposing to reduce it down to one singular lot which will have the ability to be a commercial component to it. The

town wants to see the PUD fine-tuned.”

The 75 acres proposed for rezoning does not include the Lids headquarters or property owned by Dow. Brad Johnson, a member of the Zionsville Redevelopment Commission, met with residents of the nearby Zionsville Village Residents Association in March to discuss the proposed zoning changes.

“I felt like our group was positive about preserving green space areas and some of the natural topography, as this approach would provide a more aesthetically pleasing end result for the property as a whole,” ZVRA secretary Todd Rech said. “The addition of walking trails might influence more walking traffic into the Village during lunch hours which would certainly assist our downtown businesses.”

The Zionsville Plan Commission was scheduled to discuss the zoning change at its March meeting but delayed the public hearing until the April 20 meeting.

“We wanted more time to prepare,” DeLong said. “We’ve been out pounding the pavement, meeting with adjoining land owners and interested people. We don’t want to come to the planning commission without making sure we’ve spoken with everyone who has expressed an interest to speak with us. We are looking for input and are under no time pressure to act upon this matter.”

Art contest – Zionsville Cultural District announces an art contest for the Lincoln Park Concert Series. All Zionsville students (grades pre k-12) are invited to submit original works highlighting Zionsville’s Lincoln Park. Artwork must be 8 inches by 8 inches, in color, and include summer colors like green, yellow, red, orange. Photos of 3D art cropped to 8x8 are acceptable. Entries should be turned in to any ZCS art teacher or the SullivanMunce Cultural Center by April 15. Forms are available at SullivanMunce and should be taped to the back of the artwork.

Vehicles equipped with AEDs

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Fire Department wants to make sure there are as many automated external defibrillators in the compublic safety munity as possible.

So ZFD partnered with the Zionsville Police Dept. to buy three AEDs for police vehicles. Now, all ZFD and ZPD vehicles are equipped with an AED, which will allow whichever emergency responder who arrives first to begin lifesaving treatment, if needed.

“According to the American Heart Association, early defibrillator is the best treatment for cardiac arrest,” ZFD EMS Division Chief Steve Gilliam said. “The sooner we can get a defibrillator started on the adult patient, the better their chances of survival are.”

The new AEDs cost $1,500 each and were purchased through the ZPD supplies budget and funds raised by the firefighters teaching CPR courses.

“Our CPR fund is a revolving fund that we have to do things like this, to be able to put more AEDs in the community,” Gilliam said. “(The fund) for the most part covers the cost of teaching the courses and mannequin upkeep. The extra (money) we do make we try to put back in the community. In the past, we’ve donated AEDs to Lions Park or the Lions Club. Previously, we’ve donated other AEDs to the police department as well.”

The fire department teaches all levels of CPR.

“The biggest reason is to keep our staff trained,” Gilliam said. “We also have businesses and other groups that are required to have CPR and we teach those courses to them.”

What area do you think is Zionsville’s greatest need for improvement?

I think the need that stands out the most is continuing to upgrade the town’s traffic infrastructure. The town’s first roundabout will be built soon and there are plans in the works now for upgrading other intersections and the addition of new roads. Once funding is secure we should be able to implement them.

Favorite local restaurant: The Salty Cowboy and Cobblestone Grill. Both are great for families.

Favorite movie: The James Bond movies. The old ones with Sean Connery and the new ones with Daniel Craig.

Favorite quote or motto: The best way to cheer yourself up is to try and cheer someone else up.

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library’s inaugural author fair will take place April 11, providing an opportunity to learn more about local authors and what it takes to books become published.

Twenty authors and illustrators from Indiana will be available to informally answer questions from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The fair will begin with a panel discussion at 2 p.m. with four Zionsville authors: Louis Janeira, John Preston Hanks, Jasminh Schelkopf and Amy Sorrells. Their books range from memoirs to mysteries.

“Libraries should help local authors and culture in general,” said Orty Ortwein, the library’s assistant department head for adult programming, who is enthusiastic about the variety of authors who will be participating.

The wide spectrum of genres represented includes fiction and non-fiction, poetry, sports, children’s books and suspense.

Among the fair’s Indiana authors is Donna Cronk, who recently visited the library to discuss her self-published book, “Sweetland of Liberty Bed & Breakfast.” The book chronicles a woman who returns to her hometown to open a bed and breakfast and learns that she has to trust God. The book features a variety of Bible verses and recipes, a few of which Cronk served during her book discussion. Most recipes are from

friends and family, including her grandmother’s spice cake recipe that is roughly 150 years old.

“I’ve given 60 or 70 programs and author fairs,” she said, “and this is the first time someone has asked me to do something about food.”

Cronk said that would-be authors need to consider timing. Promoting the book and attending book fairs and programs are crucial to book sales.

“If you’re passionate about a story, then tell it and find a way to publish it,” she said. “Even if you self-publish it, just do it.”

Cronk didn’t set out to write her book; her husband presented her with an idea of moving back to her hometown of Liberty, Ind., when they retired. She began to fantasize what she would do in her retirement if she lived there, and a bed and breakfast was something that intrigued her.

“I was like a little girl playing house on paper,” she said.

Celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day at Z’Greenfest

Friends of the Zion Nature Center will celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day on April 19 with the ninth annual Z’GreenFest to be held at the Zion Nature Center. nature center “We want people to become aware of their surroundings and see what individuals can do in their own yard and how that impacts the community,” said Elizabeth Mueller, a coordinator of the free event, which will be held from 2 to 5 p.m.

Maintaining Zionsville’s Tree City USA community status is one reason to hold the event, Mueller said, as it’s a requirement by the Arbor Day Foundation. But Mueller hopes that the event will encourage residents to discover their backyard and consider creating a Certified Wildlife Habitat around their home. Visitors can learn more about this at ZGreenfest.

There will also be booths about recycling, raising backyard chickens and beekeeping, plus booths by Boone County REMC and the Zionsville Stormwater Department. Children will receive a ticket at each booth they visit and may exchange their tickets for prizes or face painting. There will also be crafts at several of the booths to encourage kids to learn about nature, and children can learn how to become a Junior Naturalist.

Taste of Spring to benefit youth

By Alison Baker • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Optimist Club and the Boys and Girls Club of Zionsville are teaming to present Taste of Spring, a fundraiser benefiting both organizations, from 5 to 8 fundraiser p.m. April 24.

The event will be held at the Lions Clubhouse, 115 South Elm St. There will be wine and beer provided by Grapevine Cottage, Fountain Square Brewing Company, Flat 12 and Sun King. Attendees can also enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction comprised of sports memorabilia and other items donated by local merchants.

Those who attend Taste of Spring will also receive a voucher to eat dinner at one of eight restaurants that have been named “10/10 Dining Partners” for the evening. These places are offering a 10-percent discount on the cost of the meal and subsequently donate 10 percent of that cost back to the cause.

Those restaurants include: Cobblestone Grill, Patrick’s Kitchen, Greek’s Pizzeria, Noah Grant’s, Salty Cowboy, The Friendly Tavern, Stone Creek Dining and The Loft at Traders Point Creamery.

Both of these organizations work to provide services that shape youth in the Zionsville area.

When a little boy in an orphanage in Serbia was asked why the candy bar the Crown Princess had him given was philanthropy under his pillow, his reply was that “it was the best day of his life.” Princess Katherine has been making a difference ever since she and her husband, Crown Prince Alexander, began their reign in 2001 in Serbia (part of former Yugoslavia).

Prince Alexander’s father and grandfather were both kings of Yugoslavia. In April 1941 after Germany attacked and occupied Yugoslavia, the country’s young King Peter II (Alexander’s father) exiled to London. On July 17, 1945, while living in the Claridge Hotel, HRH Crown Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia was born.

In 2003 I had the great privilege of meeting with the royal couple while they were traveling around the U.S. to bring awareness to the plight of their country. I fell in love with both of them over a private lunch then found myself flying to Belgrade a few weeks later visiting their two palaces, refugee camps and touring a dozen orphanages and hospitals.

Our humanitarian efforts began in earnest by sending needed supplies over to Serbia. At the time I was an executive with local airline, ATA. One day I heard that one of our aircraft was flying over to the Middle East empty to pick up military troops. It was decided we would make a

stop along the way.

With the help of many local nonprofits in Indianapolis, we were able to fill the empty jet with wheelchairs, crutches, bedding for orphanages, medical supplies to take to Belgrade. Princess Katherine is still grateful for our Hoosier hospitality as she had the pleasure of distributing these items throughout her country.

The award recognizes an Indiana high school hockey player for academic achievement, leadership, community and school service and dedication and sportsmanship playing hockey. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship.

ZCHS physics students help author write first novel

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Community High School physics classes got credited for an assist in Ted Sanders’ new book “The Keepers: The Box and the Dragonfly.” books Sanders’ cousin Matt Mulholland has been a physics teacher in Zionsville since 1999.

“When he first started writing the book four years ago, he would bounce ideas off me,” Mulholland said. “For example he would say, ‘what would happen if you turned off gravity at a moment’s notice and you jumped? Could you leave the earth? How high would you go?’ I would take those problems back to my physics classroom, and some of my advanced students discussed it.

Could Michael Jordan jump off the earth if there was no gravity? Would air resistance slow him down? It led to some great discussions in my physics classes.”

Mulholland said students would work those problems and give the report to Sanders.

“I can’t say we were a great part of research for him, but we were a little part of it,” Mullholland said. “We were very grateful he gave us any acknowledgment at all.”

Sanders said the acknowledgement to Mulholland and his class was well deserved.

“He’s done a lot to help me promote the book and help write it,” said Sanders, whose book was released March 3.

This was the first of a four-book fantasy series that Sanders, a creative writing professor at the University of Illinois, has committed to write

for HarperCollins Publishing. After completion of his book tour, Sanders visited Zionsville to have an extra book signing at Black Dog Books on March 26.

Sanders spoke to the writers club and book club at the high school on March 25. The next day he spoke to a group of 90 students at both Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School.

Anne Roy, a Zionsville Middle School sixth grader, saw the presentation.

“I was excited to get the book after I heard about it,” said Anne, an avid reader who came to the book signing.

Mulholland, 43, and Sanders, 45, have always been close. The cousins, whose late mothers were sisters, frequently get together to play board games and attend Gen Con. Mulholland grew up near St. Louis and Sanders near Chicago.

The second book of the series is almost finished and will be published in March 2016.

“I kind of know what’s going to happen, but a lot of times I don’t know, because the characters make their own decisions sometimes about what’s going to happen next,” Sanders said.

Sanders’ first book was a collection of short stories for adults.

Before he started writing, Sanders worked in the children’s section at a book store in Champaign-Urbana, Ill. “I always wanted to write a kid’s book so I think it was only natural that at some point I would try,” he said. “It’s actually the first novel I’ve written.”

Study hall may not be known for inspiring life-changing moments, but an otherwise normal class period led to a career calling for Zionsville resident Megan Guard. achievement Guard, who teaches a severe disabilities Life Skills class, recently earned the Teacher of the Year honor at Brownsburg West Middle School.

In only her second year at the school, Guard earned the votes of her fellow teachers in naming her the Teacher of the Year.

“I am so honored and humbled to have won this award,” Guard said.

This year Guard, 24, teaches a class of eight students with a range of disabilities that include autism, Down syndrome and muscular dystrophy. She decided to pursue a career in special education after the life skills teacher gave a presentation in her study hall during her freshman year at Zionsville Community High School.

“I felt a calling to help students with disabilities, so I was a peer assistant all four years of high school,” Guard said. “There were a few students I worked with in particular that I developed friendships with, some of which I’m still in contact with today. I grew a passion for working with these students and found that it was very rewarding.”

Guard continued learning about and work-

ing with students with disabilities at Ball State University, graduating in 2009. With only two years of professional teaching under her belt, Guard has already made a huge impact on the students and staff members at her school.

“Megan is phenomenal with our life skills students,” said Laurie Johnson, BWMS principal.

“Students that struggled previously with their behavior are now thriving. Megan took the time to understand why the student was having the behavior and then teach the student a replacement behavior.”

Because her students have unique needs and goals, Guard customizes the schedule and curriculum. In addition to classroom work, her students have jobs in the cafeteria and frequently head off campus to learn life skills. They go to the grocery store, library and restaurants to practice what they’ve learned.

“I try to make learning as fun as possible while creating natural environments for learning,” Guard said.

Zionsville resident Kent Abernathy takes the wheel as BMV commissioner

MEET KENT ABERNATHY

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com For most people, taking over a state agency in the midst of an audit spurred by about $60 million in overcharges to its customers would be a daunting task, but not for cover story Kent Abernathy.

The new commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has served in top U.S. Army leadership positions at the Pentagon and in Iraq, as vice president of two major banks and as chief of staff of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, so he’s not intimidated by the task of cleaning up operations at the BMV. “Having been involved in complex operations before, it helps when you’re managing something this complex,” said Abernathy, a Zionsville resident. “You’ve got to take a very systematic approach to it. You can’t overreact, and you can’t underreact, but you’ve got to have a very progressive way of making change.”

Gov. Mike Pence appointed Abernathy to his new role in February, several months after accounting firm BKD had begun an audit of the state agency. Abernathy replaced Don Snemis, who is now serving as special counsel for program integrity at Family and Social Services Administration.

“Don Snemis has led the Bureau of Motor Vehicles with great integrity as he worked over the past year to identify and solve problems that have existed within the agency for several years,” Pence said in a statement announcing the new appointments. “I am confident that Kent Abernathy, with an extensive background in leadership positions in both the public and private sectors, will continue to implement these solutions and serve Hoosiers well.”

The BMV acknowledges that it overcharged customers about $60 million between 2006 and 2013 – although it also states that customers were undercharged $140 million during that same time period. Abernathy believes an overly complex fee structure created by years of legislation led to many of the mistakes, and he’s eager to implement changes as a result of the audit, which is expected to wrap up by early summer.

But overall, Abernathy believes that the BMV is in a good spot, and he plans to keep it there.

Customers overwhelmingly report positive experiences at the many local branches, the state’s wait times are among the lowest nationwide and the BMV website has been ranked one of the top in the country, he said.

“The good news is we have a 96 percent customer satisfaction rating. That’s important, because our customers are also our bosses,” Abernathy said. “We’re employed by 6.5 million Hoosiers.”

A long road to the BMV

Abernathy grew up in Redkey, Ind., a tiny town about 20 miles northeast of Muncie. He attended West Point and became an officer in the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Bragg, N.C., and in Korea.

After entering civilian life, Abernathy began working in the banking industry in New York City, near where his wife, Karen, grew up. His career eventually brought him to Indianapolis, where he served as a vice president with National City Bank and Bank One. In 2003, Abernathy returned to the military, serving in leadership at the Pentagon, as chief of staff of the Iraq Assistance Group in Baghdad and as the interim director of the U.S. Central Command Washington Liaison Office.

More than six years later, Abernathy once again left the military and returned to Indiana to become IDEM chief of staff for Gov. Mitch Daniel’s administration. He was still serving in this role earlier this year when Pence tagged him as the

“The actual appointment itself surprised me a bit,” said Abernathy, noting that he has known Pence for about 15 years and had expressed to him a “desire for more challenges.”

As the new head of a troubled agency, Abernathy has already been introduced to many challenges, but he can also point to solutions.

“There have been a lot of good things already done,” Abernathy said. “There’s already been some refunding of fees, and we’re continuing to assess that to do what’s right by Hoosiers.”

During Abernathy’s tenures in the Indianapolis area, he and his family called Carmel home for nearly two decades. But about three years ago the family decided to move to Zionsville, a town that had long appealed to them.

“We knew the lifestyle we wanted, and we’ve always loved Zionsville, so it was a very easy choice,” said Abernathy, whose earliest memories of the town include his mother traveling all the way from Jay County to visit. He also said that the small town atmosphere reminds him of growing up in Redkey and his wife of her childhood days north of New York City.

Abernathy quickly became involved in his new hometown, joining the Zionsville Economic Development Commission as a nonvoting member, a role he intends to keep even as BMV commissioner.

“If you’re going to be part of the community, I think it’s important to be involved,” Abernathy said. “[Joining the ZEDC] was a great opportunity to get to know more people in the community and have an impact on the future of Zionsville.”

Pence getting awful advice Gov. Mike Pence, who signed into law the contentious Religious Freedom Restoration Act, is taking his fair share of fire from everywhere, much like he did when he announced the formation of a state-run news bureau. While he reeled that initiative back in quickly, he presses forward with the RFRA, but wants changes in the legislation. State Republican legislators said last Thursday that the law will be amended to point out no person or persons will “be able to discriminate against anyone at any time.” Pence was on a national TV caravan of sorts, telling viewers in last week, “I abhor discrimination.”

Pence said that he stood by the law and there was never any intent to create a “license to discriminate.” Our state – and, more to the point, our business community - is under duress over the passage of a law that would allow, if not rewritten, businesses to discriminate based on sexual orientation and other viewpoints. Pence had expected a revision of the legislation on his desk by the end of last week. The real question, in our opinion, is: Who is advising this guy with the tin ear? Is he nothing more than a yes man to them? While we believe it is a business owner’s right to refuse to serve any potential customer, we never would exercise that right.

Shoot, if the ghost of Ted Kennedy came into our offices with a check for advertising a “How to (mis)handle liquor” campaign, we’d cash that check. That’s why we’re in business - last we looked - to make money. This act already is proving a drain on not only dollars, but also talent and potential business relocation and event/tourism opportunities. The RFRA doesn’t apply at our company – and it never will - for we welcome the opportunity to interact with and assist folks of varying faiths, color and lifestyles. With bad advice, Pence has thumbed his nose at the business sector, among others.

Balancing the road trip

The family road trip is a rite of passage for many in childhood. Parents pack the car with everything needed – a stocked cooler, pillows, blankets, crayons and a short stack of comic books are all must-haves. Smart parents ensure that each kid has their own separate, but equal, array of stuff. Anyone who has ever enjoyed the pleasure of traveling a long distance with a backseat full of nascent humans knows the gambit of emotion that rides along. Laughter, quiet and even sleep are all on the agenda. But, conflict can be expected as well. It all starts with the pressure of confined space, a perceived slight, or a fight over the last banana. Tempers flair and feelings are hurt. These siblings, the same in so many ways, could not be more at odds.

The adults driving the family truckster intervene to ensure that the vitriol stays in check.

They divide the space, make the kids “stop touching each other”, and usually end with an admonishment to quit “looking” at their brother that way. Essentially, all are urged to keep their

interests balanced against those with whom they are careening along the highway – to get a little perspective.

Since our nation’s founding, Americans have debated, sometimes in a civil way and sometimes not so much, how to draw the line between the various competing freedoms of individual persons. “How dare your liberty impinge on mine?” “What?! It is your liberty that is disrupting me.”

Make no mistake, debates like these matter.

They help us define property rights, personal autonomy, and our relative value in the community.

But, isn’t the least intervention from the front seat the best? And, shouldn’t we remember that we are all in this journey together? Who wins if our inability to be civil causes us to turn the car around and go home?

I really hate texting. Besides blowing up your data, communicating via text is the most likely way to end up in a snit with someone.

There’s no time or space for long-winded explanations, and certainly no way other than emojis to indicate tone of voice. Mistype or misspell? You can end up with two distinctly different meanings. To wit: “Let’s eat, Grandma!” versus “Let’s eat grandma!”

I saw this played out firsthand last week when my four sisters and I were scrambling to come up with our summer availability for Family Feud. That’s right! Steve Harvey called!

Well not Steve Harvey himself, but one of his minions. Apparently our embarrassing audition in front of hundreds of other Feud hopefuls was a success, no doubt in thanks to one of my sisters’ remarkable execution of the Worm.

Unfortunately, and I suppose ironically, trying to coordinate our calendars ended in a minor family feud of our own.

The controversial incident started with the fact that we live in five different cities. Synchronizing a three-day stretch between May and August when we can all ditch our jobs, husbands and kids to travel to Georgia is like trying to juggle lit torches, buzzing chainsaws and poopy diapers: It can be done, but only by using extreme caution.

A fourth of the dates Feud offered us are while school is in session, not the most convenient for me, the teacher, but perfect for my middle sister, the stay-at-home mom. Our annual family reunion week in July was a no for all of us, and my youngest sister couldn’t do June because she’s just come off a threemonth maternity leave. That left only a few stretches where we could all conceivably get away from work and motherhood.

Slowly but surely the texts changed from “I can make these dates but not these” to “Some of us have to work for a living!” and “Why aren’t you making FF a priority?” When I saw “If you can find the time between carpooling and traveling to Europe, give me a call,” I knew two of my sisters were getting nasty. Thank God they recognized the need for clarification through a phone call before they threw down with frown-y faces.

Sure enough, they were reading into the messages way more than what was intended.

This is Family Feud, ladies, not Family Rude!

We’re supposed to fight against the other family, not ourselves. And let’s also remember that even if the Top One Hundred People Surveyed say texting is the best method for communicating efficiently, we should all recognize that lengthy and/or potentially emotional discussions should be addressed by phone. Right Grandma? Peace out.

Spring brings good news and bad Commentary by Ward Degler Spring is here. And that’s both good and bad news.

Good news because I don’t Plain talk recall ever being so freaking tired of winter. Tired of wearing sweaters on top of sweaters just to keep warm whilst fetching the mail.

Tired of worrying whether that row of darkening clouds to the north is going to bring yet another avalanche of snow.

And so today, tra-la-tra-la, it was 60 degrees and I drove around without my heater blowing full blast.

On the other hand, what was just a week ago ice and snow is today rain. I stand at the door and watch my yard fill up with water.

Therein, the bad news. Mud. While I can avoid slogging around in ankle-deep goo, my dog, Brutie, can’t.

He seems to dote on romping through muck.

And bringing it in with him. I deal with it at two levels. Level One – moderate mud. I keep a stack of dog towels at the ready by the door.

When he barks to come in, I drop to my knees, towel flared out like a bullfighter’s cape. Cautiously, I open the door.

“Ho, Toro!” I hiss. The dog lunges. I swing the towel in a perfect Veronica, snagging the dog and wrenching him to the floor. I can almost hear “The March of the Toreadors” in the

Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre celebrates 100 years

By Alec Johnson • news@currentzionsville.com A Carmel theater will soon be wrapping up its 100th season in style.

Starting this month, the Booth Tarkanniversary ington Civic Theatre will host a series of events to commemorate the actors, actresses, and productions that have kept it going since its beginning in 1915. The theater’s Director of Development Catherine Dixon is excited about being a part of the organization and its efforts.

“I’m super honored to be a part of this organization, and the fact that I’m able to work in the performing arts and serve the community is the most amazing thing to me,” Dixon said.

The first event will be the “100 Years of Civic Theatre Exhibit,” to be held April 16 in the Tarkington Theater lobby. It archives the last 100 years, and is divided into three sections: imagination, education and participation. Alyssa Boge, a museum studies student at IUPUI, archived and catalogued the exhibit, and James Sholly, who owns Commercial Artisan, designed it. The exhibit will remain in the Tarkington lobby through the fall, and a VIP event will be held for longstanding supporters and participants to open the exhibit’s viewing.

“They will be the first people to see this exhibit, so it’s been an interesting process locating these folks trying to make sure they’re available for this,” Dixon said.

The next event will be “Backstage Exclusive: Spamalot Editon”, also at the Tarkington Theater on April 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person. The community will get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Tarkington prior to opening night of “Monty Python’s SPAMALOT.” It’s based off a children’s program called “Backstage Pass.”

The adults can see the entire set, including the sound booth, dressing rooms and prop department. The “Backstage Exclusive” involves a scavenger hunt and beer available throughout the building, sponsored by Monarch Beverages.

Dixon believes that the Tarkington is a community resource, and is excited about sharing the theater.

“This is our way that they get to see the behind the scenes stuff, which being in the industry you tend to take it for granted, because if I need to go to the dressing room, I just go up on stage and go back there; but for a lot of people, this is a very interesting opportunity, and we want to make sure people are able to do that,” Dixon said.

Following the Backstage Exclusive is the Mad Hatter and Twisted Tea Parties on June 13. The Mad Hatter will include two performances of Jr. Civic’s “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.”In between those performances, children will be able to enjoy a meet and greet with show characters, get their faces painted and enjoy refreshments.

The event runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m., with tickets costing $10 per child. Following the children’s tea party will be the Twisted Tea Party, which is an adult event. It celebrates and supports Civic’s education and outreach programs with special alumni performances, awards, music, a cash bar and refreshments. Tickets are $45 per person, and the event runs from 7 to 10 p.m.

The last event will be the Centennial Gala on June 20 at 6 p.m., a black-tie event celebrating the theater’s 100th birthday. Tickets are $250 each. It will take place at the historic home where Booth Tarkington once lived.

Booth Tarkington Civic Theater Executive Director John Hedges said that the gala is a celebration “a century in the making.”

“If you can’t have a big party when you turn 100, when can you have a big party?” Hedges said. “So we hope to really have a big celebraHedges tion on June 20. We’ve already gotten a proclamation from the mayor of Carmel. We look forward to having some sort of proclamation from the governor of the state, and just to have it be a big celebration.”

Hedges wants people to know that the Civic Theatre is more than just a place that puts on plays and performances. He says the theatre’s role “is to be a catalyst for a more tolerant, empathetic, imaginative and enlightened society.”

“Through seeing life from someone else’s point of view and figuratively ‘walking in their shoes’, there can emerge a greater sense of empathy and understanding for others—and for ourselves. It is through this work of ‘holding the mirror up to nature’ that we as theatre artists make an essential contribution to our society,” said Hedges.

Butter-Roasted Cauliflower Prep: 10 mins • Cook: 40 mins Original recipe makes 4 servings Ingredients: 1 head cauliflower, cut into large florets, 2 tablespoons butter, melted, or more to taste, salt and ground black pepper to taste Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. Spread cauliflower onto prepared baking sheet. Brush each piece of cauliflower with melted butter. Season with salt and black pepper.

Roast in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Flip cauliflower and continue roasting until tender and golden, about 10 minutes more.

Ingredients: • 1 bottle Vodka • ½ cup blue skittles • ½ cup green skittles • 1 lime Directions: Pour Vodka into two lidded jars, then empty the blue skittles into one jar, and the greens skittles into the other.

Replace the lids and shake the jars vigorously until the colored candy coating dissolves. Serve the newly colored vodka over ice and add a squeeze of lime.

Certain recipes are like legends, and “Chicken Margarita” is one of those. It took many visits to Colombia, where my husband’s family lives, many boxes of chocolate and naming this dish after her to persuade Margarita, a close family member, to share with me one of her best-kept secret recipes! This easy recipe is full of wonderful flavors!

Note: Beer adds interesting flavors to dishes from the bitterness from the hop and sweetness from malt. Enzymes in beer have a tenderizing effect making it an excellent choice for marinades.

Feel free to experiment with your own favorite beer to create new flavors to this great dish.

CHICKEN MARGARITA Serve: 6 Ingredients: • 4 lbs. organic chicken thighs • 1/3 cup olive oil • 3/4 cup beer “Bohemian” • 3 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 tablespoon of mustard • 1/3 cup of honey • 1/3 cup orange juice • 1/4 cup capers • 1 small red bell pepper, diced • 2 large tomato cut in small pieces

• 1 tablespoon cumin • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste • handful Italian parsley, finely chopped Directions: Put all the above ingredients in a bowl and mix them well (except parsley). Pour marinade over chicken, cover and refrigerate for a couple of hours, best yet overnight. Pre-heat oven to 350F. Arrange chicken in a large baking pan and spoon marinade over it. Place in oven and cook for 50 minutes or until done, basting frequently with pan juices. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle generously with parsley. Accompany with rice and roasted vegetables.

Loretta Lynn to play The Palladium

By James Feichtner • james@youarecurrent.com For more than 50 years, country music star Loretta Lynn has been spreading her gift of song across America. Now for the diversion first time, Hamilton County residents will get to experience her voice in person at The Center for the Performing Arts.

Coming to town April 24, Loretta Lynn will be making her first ever appearance at the Palladium.

After finding out Lynn was planning to do a series of events in the Midwest, the CFPA quickly reached out to her.

“To have such a legendary and iconic artist on the Palladium stage is an honor for us, so obviously we were ecstatic when the date was confirmed,” CFPA CEO Tania Castroverde-Moskalenko said.

With Lynn being one of the most iconic country music singers of all time, Moskalenko is sure that her performance will be one to remember.

“For 50 years now, Loretta has fashioned a body of work as artistically and commercially successful—and as culturally significant—as any female performer you’d care to name.,” Moskalenko said. “‘The Coal Miner’s Daughter’ has journeyed from the poverty of the Kentucky hills to Nashville superstardom to her current status as an honest-to-goodness American icon. This is one concert you don’t want to miss!”

“There will be an opening act, Walker County Band, a family band from Sulphur Springs,” Moskalenko said. “At lead vocals, Ivy Dene Walker, 19-years-old, is a power-house with outstanding [vocal] range and little sis, Sophie Dawn Walker, plays the drums and harmonizes beautifully.

Moore and his wife, Sherrie, discovered Açaí bowls while vacationing in California. By bringing Vitality Bowls to Indiana, Moore said they want to promote a healthy lifestyle for the community — kids and adults alike.

The business has already found success, especially among active groups like student athletes and yoga groups. The first catering order received by the business was placed by a group of 200 students.

Moore says that the employees are extremely knowledgeable and are ready to help guide those who may just be starting a healthier lifestyle.

Tips for visiting the doctor COMMENTARY by Debra Balos, DO Preventive care is an important part of staying healthy and feeling good. For both adults and children, practicing good prevenwomen tive care includes regular visits with a doctor to discuss overall health issues and determine appropriate schedules for preventive tests and other proactive health measures, such as immunizations.

All adults—even people without health concerns or symptoms—should see their primary care doctor once a year for a physical exam.

Yearly exams give the doctor an opportunity to check wellness and identify health issues that may not be apparent to the patient. Physicians may want to see people with chronic health conditions and those taking daily prescription medications more frequently, depending on the situation. When visiting the doctor, it’s important to discuss when necessary preventive tests, such as cholesterol screening, mammograms or prostate exams, and colon cancer screenings, are needed. These are all tests that should not be missed. Blood pressure checks are also recommended, and doctors typically check a patient’s blood pressure during the yearly physical exam.

portant for children from birth through the teen years. Generally, family medicine physicians and pediatricians recommend five or six “wellchild” visits during the first year, scheduled at appropriate intervals, to assess general health and development. To make the most of any visit with a doctor, it’s a good idea to come prepared with a list of topics or questions you’d like to discuss. Be sure to write the questions down and review the list before you leave to ensure you’ve covered everything. During the discussion, if there’s something you don’t understand, don’t hesitate to ask the doctor to repeat the information or explain it in a different way. Your ability to follow your doctor’s advice depends on having a thorough understanding of the situation and what you need to do. Don’t feel embarrassed about asking a doctor to explain further or provide more detail.

Not-so-little grammar question Commentary by Jordan Fischer QUESTION: “My sister and I are working on hand-stitching Laura Ingalls Wilder quilts. We are also both reading all the grammar guy Little House on the Prairie books to get into the whole pioneer frame of mind.

I was surprised to come across the word ‘boughten,’ which Laura uses to describe anything that is store-bought. I looked it up and it is actually a word!

Dictionary.com states that it is a Northern and North Midland U.S. nonstandard word.

I am from Illinois and we never used that word. It’s always been “store-bought” when describing items that were not hand-made.

Do people still use this word today or is it now out of fashion. Or was it a perfectly acceptable word to use at the time of publishing? (Or now, too, for that matter)? It just sounds so weird and incorrect.” – (Becky Kelly) ANSWER: This is a really interesting question, Becky, and I love the “Little House on the Prairie” books, so I’m excited to have received it.

The earliest recorded use of “boughten” I could find was 1738. Several sources identify it as a Midwestern word – and it does have that sort of feel to it – but I suspect a better description would be a “homesteader” word.

While the “Little House” books first began publishing in the early 1930s, the first few books

were set during Laura Ingalls Wilder’s childhood in the 1860s in what was essentially the undeveloped wilderness of Wisconsin and Kansas (and later Minnesota). Wisconsin had only been a state at that point for about 20 years (it was entered into the Union in 1848), and Kansas’ statehood was in its infancy (it was admitted into the Union in 1861).

All of that is to say that the books take place in parts of the country were language often took an older and more stratified form. Homesteaders often lived far away from one another, keeping contact and exchange of language to a minimum.

Access to formal education wasn’t assured, nor was it necessarily a priority. And finally, many of the homesteaders themselves were from an earlier era: Laura’s father Charles Ingalls was born in 1836, and her paternal grandparents (both of whom appear in at least the first book), were born in 1810 and 1812.

What it boils down to is that, no, people were probably not saying “boughten” very often by the 1930s when the books were published, but Laura very likely did hear it often growing up on the prairie.

Volubilis: Morocco’s Roman City Commentary by Don Knebel

The Roman ruins of Volubilis include a triumphal arch, magnificent mosaics and colonnaded temples. Surprisingly, the ruins are travel in the heart of Morocco and their extensive restoration by the French may have been a political statement.

Volubilis lies in a fertile plain at the foot of Mount Zerhoun, 18 miles north of Meknes. Volubilis was founded in the third century B.C. by the Phoenicians, sea-going traders from what is now Lebanon, and became capital of Mauretania.

After the Roman Empire annexed Mauretania in 44 A.D., Volubilis became wealthy exporting grain, olive oil and exotic animals for gladiator battles, eventually reaching a population of about 20,000.

An aqueduct supplied water for public baths and sewers transported waste to the river. A large basilica housed administrative offices and temples honored a number of important Roman gods. A ceremonial arch built in the third century paid homage to Emperor Caracalla, famous for his brutality and for granting Roman citizenship to freemen throughout the provinces.

In about 285, an over-stretched Roman Empire abandoned Volubilis and the city became Christian, its basilica converted to a church. In the late Eighth Century, after the area had come

under Islamic control, Moulay Idriss, founder of the Kingdom of Morocco, selected Volubilis as his first capital. When his son moved the capital to nearby Fes, Volubilis began a slow decline, disappearing from history by the eleventh century.

The French gained control of Morocco in 1912 and undertook extensive excavations at Volubilis, using thousands of German soldiers captured during World War I. Stripping away and discarding remains of Islamic structures, French archaeologists uncovered grand Roman villas, some with dozens of rooms and many containing well-preserved mosaic floors illustrating mythological and outdoor scenes. Workers completely rebuilt the triumphal arch and partially restored the basilica.

Some suspect French colonialists restored Volubilis as an archetypical Roman city to lay claim to a long history of Latin influence in northern Africa and others doubt the authenticity of the extensive reconstructions. Properly restored or not, Volubilis was featured in the final scenes of the 1988 film, “The Last Temptation of Christ,” and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
