ZPC gives Amberly another look

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council in February denied plans for Amberly, a proposed 72-acre subdivision at the northdevelopment west corner of CR 400 S and CR 875 E, but developers are seeking another chance to be heard.

The Zionsville Plan Commission decided March 20 to express support for waiving a requirement to wait a year before taking another look at plans for a site that had been voted down. The town can choose to revisit a petition within a year if plans change significantly, which they did, according to attorney Andy Buroker, who represents petitioner Beazer Homes.

The new plans call for 105 homes, 15 less than the previous version. They also call for a rezone to RSF2 rather than R2. The land is currently zoned R1.

“I don’t really have a problem with letting them go to the town (council) to make their point on this,” ZPC President David Franz said.

Robin Meyer, who lives near the proposed neighborhood, urged the commission not to waive the one-year waiting period. She said she’s been remonstrating against subdivision development proposals on the land since 2005.

She said that progress on Hampshire, another Beazer neighborhood under development to the west, is behind schedule and that developers have “bitten off more than they can chew.”

“A lot can happen in a year. I don’t think it’s any hardship for Amberly to wait a year to see what’s going to happen with Hampshire,” Meyer said. “We don’t have a lot of experience with Beazer in Zionsville. Let’s see what they give us before we give them permission to do more.”

The Zionsville Town Council is expected to address the issue at its April 10 meeting. If it approves waiving the one-year waiting period, developers are expected to present the new plans to the ZPC in May.

Zionsville Community High School juniors Mary Slaughter and Rebecca “Beki” Slaughter understand the grief giving back process.

The 17-year-old twins’ biological father, Dan Slaughter, died suddenly from aortic dissection in 2001 when they were 1 year old. Then their stepfather, Craig Howell, died from colon cancer in 2008.

The twins went to Brooke’s Place when they were 3 years old with two older sisters (Lindsey, 24, Anna, 20) to be counseled on their grief over losing their father. Mary and Beki went back when their stepfather died. Their mother, Paige Slaughter, attended to get guidance on dealing with her children’s grief and to share strategies with other families.

Now, Mary and Beki are volunteers at Brooke’s Place, an Indianapolis program that helps children deal with the grief of losing a loved one.

“Since November, we’ve worked as grief facilitators working with about 10 6- to 9-year-olds,” Beki said. “You have a designated group, and it is the same kids each time to help them work with their grief.”

Mary works with 3- to 5-year-olds.

Beki said there are activities to help them work through the grief and get them to talk about it.

“We really work on letting them express their grief and letting it out,” Beki said.

sions was a program at a mortuary to see how the facilitators interacted.

“We learn the four tools,” Mary said. “You reflect a lot on what they say because you don’t want to force your words into their grief process.”

Beki said another tool is “I wonder” statements such as “I wonder how you feel” or “I wonder how that experience felt to you.”

The third tool is meta-level, which is a degree of understanding.

“The fourth tool is rule breaks, which is a way of keeping them protected, knowing they can share their grief in a safe environment,” Beki said.

Beki said the children open up more because they can share their experience of losing their father, stepfather and grandfather, Steve Slaughter, who died last year.

“I feel like we’ve come full-circle,” Beki said of helping other children.

Bathroom fan sparks fire news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Fire Dept. put out a house fire in the 8900 block of Winterberry Drive March 29.

ZFD Upon arrival, ZFD found smoke coming from the roof of the house.

Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the home and extinguished it, confining the fire to the attic. The rest of the home suffered smoke and water damage.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire. Their pets exited safely.

ZFD has determined that the fire was accidental and started in the master bathroom exhaust fan.

Whitestown, Lebanon and Pike Township fire departments and the Zionsville Police Dept. assisted with the incident.

Community supports cancer fight

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com It all started when Zionsville resident Tanya Irwin was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. fundraiser Now, she’s fighting for her life after the cancer has spread to her bones, lungs and brain.

Her husband, Jeff, took a leave of absence from his job as athletic director at Lawrence Central High School to care for her after the cancer reached her brain in December. At that point she was given three to six months to live, but radiation treatments decreased the brain lesions and doctors have been optimistic with her response to treatment despite the cancer recently moving to her spine.

“It’s been amazing the last three months that she’s defied the odds,” Jeff Irwin said.

Between medical bills and in-home care, a friend created a GoFundMe page to help support the family until Jeff Irwin returns to work. Within a week it had reached half of its $20,000 goal.

“This has changed me forever,” said Jeff Irwin, who has been humbled by the com-

munity’s generosity. “My hope is to someday help others how we’ve been helped.”

Tanya Irwin is motivated to reach her 40th birthday in June and to see her daughters start kindergarten and middle school in the fall.

“She’s been absolutely an inspiration to me because of how she continues to fight,” Jeff Irwin said.

He hopes others will recognize that wearing pink in October is more than just a simple symbol for breast cancer awareness.

“I hope that people realize what breast cancer is and truly understand what they’re supporting,” he said.

It’s called lanium amplexicaule, but most folks just call it henbit. It’s that bright purple flower that has plain talk taken over the farm fields this spring.

Henbit is an arable minor weed, which means it reseeds itself when the wind blows. It’s popping up just about everywhere these days, and by all accounts it’s kind of pretty.

The plant originally came from the Mediterranean countryside but has been in the United States and heavily around the Midwest for several generations. One of the reasons it is so prolific is traced to a professor at the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri.

His name has sunk into obscurity, possibly at his own request, since he obviously had no clue how widely and rapidly the weed would spread.

What the good professor did was have farmers plant henbit as a green crop, one that would hold the soil against wind erosion during the winter and would add valuable nutrients when plowed under in the spring.

All of that worked fine, and everybody was happy with Operation Henbit. Until it became apparent that it was spreading beyond the farm fields. People’s lawns, city, county and state parks, along with highway rights-of-way and golf courses, were suddenly turning purple in the spring.

Wind from cars driving by fields would pick up the seeds and scatter them far and

wide. Henbit was suddenly everywhere.

And it still is, and will likely continue.

Sort of the way residual growth of multiflora rose keeps showing up around the countryside.

Multiflora was another wonderful idea that backfired. The plan, launched at the end of World War II, was that the rose could be planted along the borders of farm fields where it would take the place of expensive fencing. Moreover, it grew into a dense hedge, which provided habitat for upland game — rabbits, quail, pheasants. Everybody was a winner! Until folks realized that birds ate the seeds and planted them where they roosted.

Suddenly, multiflora rose was cropping up everywhere.

Within a few years state departments of agriculture around the Midwest changed the classification of multiflora rose from beneficial hedging to noxious weed. Missouri and several other states launched vigorous extermination programs.

Several similar herbicide protocols have taken up arms against the henbit invasion.

Wheat farmers are especially cursed since the henbit comes up at the same time as the winter wheat.

The battle lines have been drawn, and war has been declared. So far, henbit is winning.

High school students at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church participate in a monthly service at various locations around the Indianapolis area, serving the poor. One such location is The Lord’s Pantry at Anna’s House, in Stringtown on the near west side of Indianapolis. Unlike a typical food pantry that distributes canned goods, The Lord’s Pantry focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables as well as meat.

About 30 students from St. Alphonsus joined students from other parts of the Indianapolis area one Saturday morning to unload a truck full of food and set up food displays before the customers arrived. The students set up food stands in a row that allowed a constant flow of customers to select the food they wanted.

In between the set up and the distribution of the food, one of the staff members gave all the volunteers assembled a history of The Lord’s Pantry. Inspired by the Mozel Sander’s Thanksgiving dinner, a Baptist minister named Lucious Newsom wanted to help feed the poor beyond just the holidays. His vision caught on, and through the years hundreds of volunteers have come together to distribute food out of a building named for a little girl. Anna volunteered passionately despite the fact that she was confined to a wheelchair and required a breathing machine. She passed away at age 12.

Duo offers mobile art classes

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com For several years, friends Deanna Leonard and Erin Goodman have been involved in the arts in Noblesville, profile selling vintage and handmade goods at local antique stores and malls and taking their camper throughout the Midwest to offer pop-up and mobile art classes at various fairs and markets.

But in November of last year, to create a home base in Noblesville, the duo opened their storefront, Caravan Classes, at 98 S. Ninth St. in downtown Noblesville’s historic Richwine Building.

“We started doing craft and art fairs together,” said Goodman, an art teacher at Zionsville West Middle School. “We did that for several years, and being art teachers, we thought it would be neat to offer a make-and-take opportunity for people at art fairs. Also, since we both have campers, we had this idea that we could have the campers at the art fairs and have it as a mobile art studio. It just kind of happened organically with our similar interests. We started about a year ago building the Caravan Classes model.”

“We had a very full schedule last year,” Leonard said. “From the time we developed the model together, we started going everywhere, pretty far-reaching. That experience kind of taught us to hone in a little closer to Noblesville. We had been looking for a studio space to serve as a home base for awhile.”

The camper housing Caravan Classes is a 1969 Shasta. The inside is completely remodeled to accommodate seating for small art classes and projects.

Leonard and Goodman try to educate the community and their customers about famous artists.

“One of the things that we develop monthly is we feature an artist,” Leonard said. “So we come up with that artist usually based upon that artist’s birthday.”

The monthly class lets guests make a “mini masterpiece” that recreates a famous work of art from the featured artists on a miniature easel and canvas.

“Overall, we offer events like classes, usually a one-night class, in studio, and we like to have the ‘pop-in menu,’” Goodman said. “We find that people are so busy now that they don’t always want to commit to things down the road, but they might want to spontaneously stop in.”

Help provide lunch in Haiti

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church in Zionsville has worked in recent years to bring relief to hurricanegiving back ravaged Croix Fer, Haiti.

The church has worked to provide medical care and clean drinking water, but recently it’s developed a hot lunch program for students at the St. Anthony School.

“We started to turn toward education as another way to really sustain and improve the living environment there in the village.

That’s when we got around to recognizing that the current school the church was operating was just a little stick structure.

We got interested in building the school,” said Steve Boehm, a parishioner at St. Alphonsus. “Then we realized the kids that were attending the school were not being fed at all. We thought this might be another great way to support education of children in Croix Fer, but to also improve health.”

The program allows students to have a hot lunch consisting of rice, beans and fish sauce. The church calculated that for $75 one student can be fed a hot lunch for a year.

“Over the last year we have been able to provide a hot lunch for every student in the school, including the fish sauce, which is a great source of added protein,” Boehm said. “The hot lunch program has made a huge difference. There are about 250 to 280 children at the school now. It’s been really great.”

The fundraising efforts have mainly consisted of parishioners donating money, but the church would like to involve the Zionsville community.

“Over the last two or three weeks, we’ve been working really hard to support the program for the 2017-18 academic year. The

Zions ville residents prepare to run nation’s mos t famou s marathon

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Among the 30,000 people running the Boston Marathon April 17 will be 10 from the Zionsville area, some cover story running for the second or third time.

This year will mark Jackie Harder’s third time although she’s qualified nearly a dozen times. As a track coach at Zionsville Community High School, she often missed her chance to participate because of conflicts with varsity meets.

“I decided I’m 50, I’m going to do it one more time,” said Harder, who resolved to run despite a hamstring injury.

“There’s no other race like it,” she said.

“It’s a mountaintop experience. The whole city shuts down.”

The area surrounding Wellesley College is one of the highlights of the race for Harder.

She said the entire college comes out to cheer for the runners, offering high-fives and kisses.

“It’s a rumble from 10 minutes away,” said Nicole Seiler, who ran for the first time last year.

The course stretches 26.2 miles throughout eight neighborhoods, ending in downtown Boston. Being a one-way race also differentiates it from many other marathons. Seiler was driven from the finish line to the start line last year and was surprised by the distance.

“We kept driving and driving,” she said, “for 45 minutes.”

“I’ve done no other race where there are crowds literally from the start to the finish,” said Becky Wood, who trains with Seiler.

“I’m looking forward to conquering Heartbreak Hill,” said Alta Skelton, referring to the final hill of the race, which is considered the toughest stretch on the course.

At the crest of Heartbreak Hill, the band from Boston College and student cheers can be heard.

“There are people from all over the world running this,” said Harder, who has seen amputees and people with other disabilities compete in the run.

“Everybody has a story,” Harder said.

Wood and Seiler met through running and have developed friendships with others through the shared interest.

Nicole,” Wood said. “We call each other 20-miler friends because we can run for 20 miles and still have stuff to talk about.”

“I would not be a marathoner if it were not for my running friends,” Seiler said. “It’s a social hour.“ For Skelton, who is running the race for the third time, being able to participate with a friend who formerly lived in Zionsville is one of the highlights, along with the fact that it’s the renowned Boston Marathon.

“I like the eliteness of it, that you have to qualify,” she said. “It gives you something to aim for.”

Training for many of these runners can begin more than 18 months in advance of the actual marathon, with a goal to run 20 miles at least once weekly in the months leading up to the race. Running five to six days a week, sometimes for up to three hours, is the biggest drain on time.

“I think the training is the hardest part, finding time to balance work, family and running,” Seiler said. “Balancing sleep is the hardest.”

Seiler and Wood have a goal of running 2,017 miles in 2017, which is roughly the distance between Indianapolis and Los Angeles.

“It breaks down to less than 200 a month, but I’m trying to bank a little at the beginning (of the year) so life can still happen,” Seiler said.

Seiler wants to inspire parents to run with their kids as the leader of the Eagle Elementary Running Club. She helped Wood start a similar program at Trader’s Point Christian Academy.

Wood tries to instill a love for running in students and teach them how to set goals.

“Setting little goals can pay off, like crossing the finish line,” Wood said.

Harder helps her high school athletes set goals that aren’t too lofty.

“I think the biggest thing is teaching them

to set attainable goals,” she said. “One of the reasons I still run is to hopefully inspire one of these athletes. It’s more than just a high school thing. It’s a lifetime thing.”

Other local residents who qualified for the race are Amy Biggs, Abdel Bouaichi, Tracie Hunter, Karen Jones, Kimberly Mayrose and Amy Stayer.

how to qualify The Boston Marathon is recognized as one of the most exclusive races in the U.S. and is celebrating its 121st year in 2017. Those interested in applying must first run in a qualifying race and meet the minimum qualifying time for their gender and age categories. Applicants then register based on the fastest qualifying times, which often means those who meet the minimum qualifying time aren’t guaranteed a spot.

“It seems like there are more people being rejected because the times are getting harder,” runner Nicole Seiler said.

Because the marathon is conducted within Boston’s city limits, a limited number of runners are accepted. Getting a chance to run one year doesn’t guarantee participation in following years.

Becky Wood was three seconds slower than the top qualifiers the one year she was not accepted for the race, despite being faster than the qualifying time.

“I always say you should be 20 minutes under the qualifying time to be sure you’re getting in,” Jackie Harder said.

Each year the time standard varies depending on the number of applicants.

This year, runners who were two minutes and nine seconds faster than their qualifying time were accepted. In 2016, applicants needed to be two minutes and 28 seconds faster.

Commentary by Terry Anker The path to a happy life and fulfilling career is rarely a direct one. In fact, modern times seemingly dictate an intentionally circuitous route. We switch jobs with ever increasing frequency. We move from home to home. We jump from city to city, even state to state and nation to nation. The toll of this constant condition of change can be a difficult burden for many. We struggle to create and maintain long-term and stable relationships. We often become disassociated from our family and neighbors. Isolation is an emerging human crisis even as we are more connected than ever before.

The reasons that drive us to give up the known, the familiar and the constant to seek new challenges and opportunities are as varied as the ways that we define the fulfillment that we seek. Several years ago, I decided to veer off a bit from the secure and well-understood career I’d built in the previous 20 years to serve somewhat more directly. Long a volunteer and donor to a variety of causes, an opportunity was presented to help lead the local community foundation, to build its endowment and to elevate its profile. This month marks the completion of that tenure.

It has been a good, if imperfect, run.

Many metrics have been achieved and congratulations exchanged. Yet, like many at a moment of transition, one looks for summation of it all. What was learned? How could it have been better? Was it worth the effort? Given another at-bat, would we look for the same pitch?

As I return to a life more familiar, I will miss the one that I’ve come to live. But happiness is found in its pursuit. And, in that, I’m a lucky guy.

It only takes a moment Commentary by Donna Monday They say life is made not of days or years but of moments. I don’t know who “they” is, but they are humor right. And we’ve all had our moments.

I had one recently. I was down on my knees with colored chalk writing a poem on the sidewalk at the bank (hey, if you’re gonna make a fool of yourself you should pick the biggest corner in town).

Here I am, grandma in her blue jeans and a T-shirt that says something about some city somewhere. It’s not Paris, I assure you. I look like some weird old lady doing graffiti in her retirement.

About then a couple — he in a tie, she in heels — appears on the scene. Whoops, I think, not great timing on my part.

So, still down on all fours, I look up.

“Is there something going on at the bank tonight?” I ask.

“Why, yes,” says the woman, adding something about a chamber event.

“Oh,” I mutter, not attempting to rise.

Actually, I consider rising and running away altogether. But what I happen to know is that if there is one thing less attractive than a retired grandma on her knees on the sidewalk, it is a retired grandma getting up from her knees on

the sidewalk. Trust me, it’s not pretty.

I stay right there on all fours (the “tabletop” position they call it in yoga), determined to complete my poem.

God bless the chamber folks. They just murmur, “Excuse us,” as they tiptoe around me.

That’s when it dawns on me. There’s still time to further embarrass my children (you remember Sparkplug and Rainbow). Those two, bless their hearts, grew up with a mom writing a weekly humor column that often featured them — thinly disguised, of course.

Fast-forward 25 years and here we are. The kids are grown and successful, the grandkids becoming the same.

And Grandma? Well, she’s still writing in Zionsville. Only now she’s down on her knees with colored chalk.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In my defense, I was only trying to whip up interest in the first ever Zionsville Sidewalk Poetry Contest. Winner to be announced soon.

If being quietly happy that my husband Doo is out of town is wrong, people, then I gotta be honest, I don’t want to humor be right! I love Doo, and I know he loves me, but a little space every now and again is a welcome respite from the demands of marriage. Can I get an “amen?”

No? OK. Let me break it down. Male partners are large children, especially during cold and flu season. They are needy, they can’t seem to act independently and more often than not, they pee on the wall instead of in the toilet. Sure, they work hard, and mine in particular is extraordinarily handy around the house. But their ability to begin and finish a task is often handicapped by their desire to eat, play on the computer, or in my case, watch the ever-depressing but admittedly entertaining poo-show that is the news.

So I am thrilled that Doo will be gone for a few nights, and I’ll have complete control of the kitchen, bedroom and remote. I’ll only need to mentally keep track of my four actual teenagers and not worry about whether Doo will be able to pick up from dance or help with homework.

Now, should you be calling me a horrible wife, know that Doo is probably enjoying the break even more than I am. He can turn on every light in his hotel room, keep the volume up on the TV and not be concerned with leaving the place a complete pit. He’s free to be Doo – an ADD, extraverted night-owl who temporarily has no parenting or spousal responsibilities whatsoever. Truly, this is a win-win scenario!

And the best part is, once Doo returns, I’ll have experienced just enough singleparenting to appreciate his love and support once again. So I say, bring on the spouse-free week! Yay! Peace out.

My mother drove her Buick until almost 90 … and sometimes faster. She was in great health at age 87, but humor it irked her that many of her able-bodied friends had handicap license plates that allowed them to park closer to the grocery store. She’d get out of her car and drag her foot along the ground to appear disabled. The A&P manager overlooked it. He wasn’t as lenient on the shoplifting charges, though. I admit that I’ve parked in the spaces that said: PARKING FOR MOTHERS WITH TODDLERS I don’t have a toddler, but when I did, there were no reserved spaces. By the way, the signs are sexist: men can obviously have toddlers, although they probably left them home with mom.

PARKING FOR EXPECTANT MOMS I once pulled into this space to hurriedly purchase a dozen eggs. Someone recognized me and pointed out to me that I was not pregnant. I won’t do that again, but just in case of a real emergency, I now carry a down pillow in the back seat.

PARKING FOR ONLINE CUSTOMERS ONLY Huh? These folks were too lazy to shop

at the actual store, and too impatient to have their merchandise delivered. Now they want their own parking space? To be fair, if you are pregnant and also dragging along two toddlers to pick up a car seat you ordered online, you should be allowed to park right inside the store.

Express Scripts now hiring

Express Scripts expansion spokeswoman Rachel Thimangu said the third shift will create 160 new jobs, including skilled pharmacists, operations supervisors, entry-level clerks and warehouse positions. The third-shift hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the 452,000-square-foot facility, 4750 E. 450 S. “We have a high-volume pharmacy that fills prescriptions for home delivery,” Thimangu said. “A typical retail pharmacy would dispense 300 prescriptions per day, so that’s maybe 108,000 prescriptions in a year. Once it’s up to full capacity with these new jobs, we’re going to be looking to fill 850,000 prescriptions in a week.”

It is currently filling 600,000 prescriptions per week.

“We’ve made some hires, but we still have significant opportunity,” Thimangu said. “We’re looking to get it up and running as soon as possible and have it fully up to full operation by the end of May.” Thimangu said approximately half the

job openings are entry-level positions, and about 30 percent will be higher level positions such as system coordinators, which is a machine operator job and supervisor.

Thimangu said approximately 20 percent of openings would be pharmacy technicians.

“They need to be licensed pharmacy technicians in the state,” Thimangu said.

“We are looking to fill these locally.”

After starting with one shift, a second shift was added in 2013.

“As a sign of further growth for the business and our presence in the Indianapolis area, we’re adding a third shift,” Thimangu said. “It’s all about putting that facility to work and creating a higher volume.”

Big plans for small dogs

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com The new owner of For the Dogs is a dog person, but she especially loves small dogs.

“Part of the new ownership reason I wanted a (dog) day care (is because) I wasn’t going on vacation, I wasn’t going anywhere because I didn’t have a place to leave my small dog,” Sharra Christine said.

For the past year she had been trying to establish a business in Westfield, receiving advice from the previous owner of For the Dogs. Every time she found a potential property, something prevented the deal from being finalized.

Then, as Christine was beginning to doubt the career path, the former owner called and said he needed to sell the business and wanted her to buy it. She was initially unsure since she had recently built a house in Westfield, but after spending a few weeks with the dogs she fell in love.

“I decided this would be a great thing,” she said.

Previous customers won’t notice any changes apart from a few new employees.

The same processes for caring for the dogs are still in place.

“They did a great job here,” she said.

By summer she plans to create a separate area for small and senior dogs with an outdoor space covered by netting to foil birds of prey.

Christine plans to change the day care’s name to A Pet Mom, which was the name of her dog-walking business.

But it isn’t any ordinary store. new biz In addition to regular bikes, e-Boom Electric Bicycles will sell electric bikes, pedalassisted models that allow riders to turn on a small motor to help them get up a hill or through a long ride.

“You still pedal to make the bike go, but you can add battery power to make pedaling faster, easier or find a nice cadence that makes you go far,” co-owner Lee Ann McKay said. “It’s almost like you feel like a superhero. It’s like you have these extra powers.”

McKay and her business partner, Robin Coffman, gave up their corporate careers to pursue their passion.

“We both love biking. We’ve been biking all over the place for many years,” McKay said. “We got into e-biking just recently and fell in love with it. We thought, ‘Wow, this is what we need to be doing’. We decided we would like to sell e-bikes to our friends and people in the community.”

Our children are growing up in a hurried world, filled with an influx of busyness and a pressure to be confamily health stantly connected with technology. We usually don’t think of these influences as being stressful for our children, but often they are.

Just today, in the morning rush to get out the door, I was responding to a text while attempting to hurry my toddler to the car. Suddenly, he turned to me, sucked in a room full of air and grunted. He was frustrated with the bustling pace of the morning, and rightfully so.

So, how do we help our little ones counter these influential pressures? An increasing number of adults are turning to yoga for its well-known benefits for both the body and mind. Children, too, can derive enormous benefits from yoga.

When children learn techniques for mindfulness, relaxation and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease. Reflecting back on my son’s outward expression this morning, I came to realize that it was actually an ap-

propriate response. Even at a young age, he independently tapped in to his yoga toolbox to deal with his anxiety and frustration, and chose to use his breath, by way of a sigh, rather than screaming or throwing a tantrum to rein in my attention.

Of course, yoga is physically beneficial for children as well. It enhances their flexibility, strength, balance and coordination.

It is also a great way to improve selfesteem and body awareness with a physi-

cal activity that’s noncompetitive. The CDC recommends 60 minutes of physical activity, per day, for children. For a little one with limited motor skills, or an older child that is not athletically inclined, that is quite a tall order. Yoga is a great activity because, instead of routine exercises that they may not be able to connect with or perform, yoga poses mimic animals or ideas familiar to children that are fun and provide just the right challenge.

So how can you help your little yogi grow? Classes can be a fun experience for both you and your little one. Many of them feel honored to practice on the mat in a class setting, whether it’s next to a caretaker or with their peers. If you are unable to get your child to a class, there are several alternatives to help them let that inner light shine. Our Zionsville public library has several kids’ yoga DVDs available to borrow, and there are several Cosmic Kids adventures available to stream on YouTube.

Melissa Summers Whybrew teaches adults, kids, new mothers and their babies at Simply Yoga Zionsville. She also teaches at several local private schools. As a mom, she is especially passionate about children’s health, fitness and coping techniques.

Rogers’ farewell tour lands in Carmel

Kenny Rogers is in the midst of what is being billed as “The Gambler’s Last Deal.”

Rogers, 78, began a farewell tour in 2016 to Concert devote more time to his 12-year-old identical twin sons.

“My sons asked me what I’m going to do when I quit singing and I tell them, ‘I thought I’d come home and spend all my time with you guys,’” Rogers said. “They both put their heads down and said, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ So maybe it isn’t as exciting for them as it was for me. I’m curious what I’m going to do, because I’ve done this for 60 years now.”

Rogers will perform at 8 p.m. April 7 at the Palladium in Carmel. There has been no final concert date set for the tour.

“I’m at a point where I don’t move around as well as I used to,” Rogers said. “I think I’m singing well, that doesn’t bother me. But my mobility is a factor.”

Rogers started the final tour in South Africa in January 2016.

“Since then we’ve been to probably 150 places. Each place has made this retirement feel special to me,” Rogers said.

“You look for some type of closure. This is as much as a thank you to the audience where I can get a chance to say thank you for your support for 60 years as it is a farewell tour.”

Rogers said the songs “Islands in the Stream,” “The Gambler” and “Lucille” were all important to his career.

“It’s hard to say one is better or more important,” Rogers said. “If I didn’t do any one of those three, it would be disappointing to the people who came to see me say goodbye. I have to be conscious of that. It’s a different show that I’ve ever done. It’s a linear look at my life and my career.”

Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 12 Dough: 1 cup whole-wheat flour, 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided, 1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup warm water, 125-130 F, 1 tablespoon canola oil Topping: 7 medium fresh mushrooms, sliced, 3 plum tomatoes, chopped, 1 small green bell pepper, slivered, 1/2 cup sliced black olives, 1/4 cup chopped red onion, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon thyme, 1/4 teaspoon basil, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, nonstick cooking spray, 2 teaspoons cornmeal Directions: Heat oven to 475 F. To make dough: In mixing bowl, combine wholewheat flour, 1/2 cup all- purpose flour, yeast and salt. Add water and oil. Beat until

smooth. Stir in remain- ing all-purpose flour to form soft dough. Place onto floured surface and knead by hand until consistent and elastic, about 4 minutes. Cover and let stand 15 minutes.

To make topping: In bowl, combine mushrooms, tomatoes, green bell pepper, olives, onion, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, basil and garlic powder.

Coat 15-by-10-by-1-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle with cornmeal. Gently press dough into pan. With fork, generously prick dough.

Bake 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Cover dough with topping mixture. Bake additional 10 minutes, or until edges are golden brown.

Copenhagen’s expensive ‘toaster’ Commentary by Don Knebel The most expensive opera house in the world was supposed to become a symbol of Copenhagen, travel Denmark. Instead, it has become something of a local embarrassment.

In the late 1990s, Arnold Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the billionaire owner of Mærsk, the world’s largest container shipping company, thought his home city of Copenhagen needed a symbol. He proposed constructing an opera house on a man-made island in Copenhagen’s harbor and donating the building to the government. The island, near Mærsk’s waterfront headquarters, is directly across from Amalienborg, the historic home of Denmark’s royal family.

Although many citizens of Copenhagen vigorously opposed the opera house because of its location and because of its enormous tax benefit to Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the government approved the idea.

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller hired 75-year-old Henning Larsen, a Danish architect whose mentor had designed the iconic opera house in Sydney, Australia. Mærsk McKinney Møller dictated some of the design

elements, including adding metal to the curved entry. When completed in 2004, Copenhagen’s new 450,000-square-foot opera house included 1,000 rooms spread among 14 stories, five of them underground. The ceiling of the foyer was covered with more than three pounds of gold leaf. The total cost of the building was about $500 million, or more than $300,000 for each of the approximately 1,400 seats in the main auditorium.

Despite (or perhaps because of) its enormous cost, the building’s design has been widely lampooned, described variously as a fly, an oil can and a space ship. The glass and metal entry has been compared unfavorably to the grill of a 1955 Pontiac.

The curved maple wall at the rear of the foyer, stained orange to suggest a violin, is known locally as the “giant pumpkin.” Even architect Larsen, who acknowledged the building as his “greatest failure,” thought it looked like a toaster.
