Local churches share secrets for bucking trend of decline

Christian churches recently experienced packed houses Easter weekend. But what about the rest of the year?

RELIGION For many, attendance has been dwindling, leaving some congregations struggling and even closing their doors. But locally, there have been success stories beyond Easter and Christmas.

“We’ve found so many positive stories about effective congregations that counter the narrative of decline captured in social science data,” said Tim Shapiro, president of the Center for Congregations, Inc. in Indianapolis.

After studying more than 4,500 congregations in Indiana, Shapiro noted three local thriving Christian congregations that stand out: Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown, Northview Church in Carmel and Eastern Star Christian Church in Indianapolis.

So, what are they doing right in a time when many congregations are declining?

Removing barriers Northview Church has eight locations, with three more opening this year.

“We take the Great Commission seriously to ‘Go into the world,’” Northview Lead Pastor Steve Poe said. “We’re not waiting for the people to come to us.”

Two of Northview’s satellites are behind prison walls. In fact, the services have been so successful that the church is adding another two more at other facilities.

Eastern Star’s Pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson Sr. has a unique approach to removing location barriers. While many pastors are behind pulpits on Sunday morning, he also is behind the wheel. For the past 25 years, he has preached live — at multiple locations. He starts Sunday mornings early at the Fishers campus and then drives to the Cooper Road campus, and then it’s off to the Indianapolis Main Campus.

Engaging and challenging worship Traders Point also has made reaching people a priority and has expanded by opening three new campuses with others on the horizon. It aims to create engaging worship with vibrant

music and challenging biblical teaching that doesn’t avoid difficult texts.

“I really love the sermons and learn something new each week,” Carmel resident Julie Klausner said. “The messages make me think, and I take time to evaluate my life.”

Caring for the community One shared priority of these growing churches is reaching beyond their own walls.

Perhaps no local church has a more visible presence of caring for its neighbors than Eastern Star Christian Church. Not only does it engage in the local community, it has a personal stake in it. Through its “Rock Initiative,” Eastern Star is using its land around its main campus to build 30-plus homes as well as a mixed-use apartment complex to enhance housing options, build community and grow the overall financial security of residents.

The groundbreaking happened last spring, and the project has more than 25 community partners.

More than the numbers This year, TPCC was ranked the fifth-fastest growing church in the U.S. by Outreach Magazine. Northview held similar honors in the recent past. But for these growing churches, it’s not about increasing numbers, it’s about reaching the unchurched.

To be eligible for the award, nominees must be Indiana residents, age 65 or older and have been a volunteer in the community for the past three years. Summer camp registration — Registration is open for Traders Point Christian Academy summer camps. Camp Invention includes hands-on STEM activities such as building a robot dog.

The Town of Zionsville announced March 27 that it has achieved an 80-20 percentage ratio of residential to other types of TOWN NEWS property tax revenue, a goal it hoped to reach by 2020.

The Zionsville Town Council announced the goal in 2008, at a time when the town’s property tax base was 95 percent residential. With property tax caps about to kick in, town leaders decided it was time to work to diversify the tax base.

“It has been a really big needle to move, but we have seen a huge shift since when I first served on Town Council,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak, a member of the 2008 council, stated in a press release. “The progression is a result of the dedicated efforts of Town staff, Town Council members, the Boone County Economic Development Corp. and the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce.”

Since 2008, businesses that have opened locations in Zionsville include the LIDS headquarters, FedEx distribution center, DK Pierce, MOBI and N.K. Hurst Company, among others. The town had reached an 87-13 split by 2016.

Marketing awards earned — Indianapolis advertising agency HendrixRaderWise, Inc. recently won several gold ADDY awards for its work with Lake City Bank and the Indianapolis International Airport. The awards included Top Television Campaign, Individual Television, and BtoB Campaign (TV, print, and digital).

Real estate update — Homes in Zionsville are increasing significantly in price while leaving the market faster. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Zionsville in February 2018 was $488,991 at an average of $144.70 per square foot, the highest price in the area and a 13 percent increase. Homes in the city sold in an average of 84 days, 15 days faster than this time last year.

Zionsville Road repairs made

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com The Indianapolis Dept. of Public Works recently completed a week-long repair project along Zionsville Road from 86th Street to the Dow AgroSciences site near W. STREETS 96th Street.

Zionsville Road received strippatching repairs, which includes tearing up segments of the road with potholes and refilling them.

Betsy Whitmore, the department’s chief communications officer, said the department worked primarily in the east lane because of reports from citizens Whitmore and inspections by the DPW’s engineering team.

“The work is complete, and drivers should notice that segments of the road that were once hard to traverse are now smoother and more passable,” she said.

The repairs are part of Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s Emergency Declaration regarding the deteriorating roads throughout the city. On March 12, the Indianapolis City-County Council approved a $14.5 million allocation for the effort. It is in addition to the city’s $88 million infrastructure budget for 2018, which Whitmore said will allow previously planned projects to move forward.

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com For Earth Day, the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. is inviting residents to get outside and help remove the PARKS invasive garlic mustard plant, which takes over other plants if not routinely pulled out of the ground.

Each April is a designated time for Zionsville residents to offer assistance through the Pull for Parks program, but this year the program is a little different.

“Instead of having people sign up to volunteer and then throughout the month sending them out into the park, this year we’re just focusing on the one weekend, April 21-22,” Zionsville Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock said. “We just have a lot of groups, Scouts and school kids coming out to pull during the week, so we were really focusing the individual volunteer efforts on that one weekend since it’s Earth Day weekend.”

Last year, volunteers removed approximately 219 bags of garlic mustard. All Zionsville parks will benefit from the effort, Murdock said.

More than 260 volunteers from Zionsville Middle School, including parents and teachers, will be out April 10 pulling garlic mustard.

Registration is available through April 16 online at zionsville-in.gov/activities under “Pull for Parks Blitz.” Participants will be emailed additional information on when and where to volunteer. Volunteers must provide their own gloves.

Town to collect brush, limbs news@currentzionsville.com The Town of Zionsville’s Street & Stormwater Dept. will provide curbside brush and limb collection beginning April SPRING 16. This service provides Zionsville residents in the Urban Service District a means to dispose of certain pruning and yard debris. The town cannot guarantee the collection unless items are curbside by 7:30 a.m. on the designated pick-up day.

The limit on size is 6 inches in diameter and smaller. Grass clippings, leaves, decorative grass, vines, stumps, root balls, construction lumber, firewood and wooden fencing material will not be collected. Bundling is not required. Limbs up to 6 inches in diameter may be left intact but should be no larger than can be managed by one person.

Family welcomes 3 adopted siblings from Bulgaria

For a decade, Mark, Mary K and Cooper Purvis had been a family of three, but that changed last August when they opened their home to three Bulgarian sibPROFILE lings through adoption.

It wasn’t always easy adjusting to cultural differences and double the number of people in the family, but Maraya, Kevin and Vesselin are finally starting to settle into life in Carmel and build lasting bonds.

First steps Mark and Mary K were introduced by friends after college and celebrated their 12-year wedding anniversary last October. They said they both wanted children since the beginning, but adoption wasn’t always part of the plan.

“We were older when we got married and had Cooper,” Mary K said. “Anything that could go wrong, did. So by the time we were ready to try for more kids, it just didn’t happen.”

Mark said they discussed adoption for years before truly jumping in and exploring options. They decided not to limit their search to the U.S. Mark attended a counseling service’s seminar that offered fertility, fostering and adoption resources where he discovered MLJ Adoptions, an Indianapolis-based agency.

MLJ has worked in Bulgaria since 2010.

“It just kind of fit,” Mary K said.

began adoption paperwork in January of 2015, originally indicating they were searching for two young siblings.

After one year without a match, areas of the paperwork needed updating, so at that time, Mark and Mary K also increased the ages and number of siblings they were searching for.

“Faith was a huge part of deciding three kids,” Mary K said. “In the beginning, we talked about one or two, but we decided (three) if we could keep siblings together.”

The Purvises filed the updated paperwork in the winter of 2016 and were approved to adopt three children the fol-

lowing February.

“It’s real then,” Mark said.

In May 2017, Mark and Mary K flew to Bulgaria to meet Maraya, Kevin and Vesselin. They Skyped every Sunday from then until the Purvises returned to Bulgaria in August to finalize the paperwork and bring the children home.

Making adjustments Mark said the family has been adjusting to a “new normal” the past few months.

“It kind of went in phases,” Mary K said. “We knew language going in would be tough, but I think there were some behavioral aspects that I wasn’t prepared for.”

Mark said Vesselin, 7, was afraid, and that fear manifested into defiance toward them and violence toward his siblings. The language barrier created tension and caused tantrums. “We’d wake up and (think) the day can’t end quick enough,” Mark said. “It was that hard. But now, we look forward to doing certain things and it’s not that fear.”

In 2008, Zionsville residents Vivian and John Maley created the Joseph Maley Foundation to honor their NONPROFIT son who was born with physical and cognitive disabilities and died from leukemia at age 18. The foundation’s programs are now in 30 schools throughout Indiana and have served more than 26,000 children.

“It’s really been a roller coaster,” Vivian said. “You take what I thought this might be, you have big ideas about what it could be and then you start to see them come to fruition, but in ways that I don’t know that I expected.”

When Joseph was young, Vivian implemented a program at her sons’ schools to provide opportunities for students to learn about disabilities and accept that everyone is different. When Joseph died, Vivian’s four younger boys encouraged her to start a foundation to teach disability awareness on a grander scale, she said.

To celebrate the anniversary, the foundation is adding a 10-mile option to its annual 5K Run, Walk, Roll on July 14. The foundation also will host its inaugural Butterfly Ball Nov. 3 at Ritz Charles in Carmel. Vivian said it will not be an annual event, but rather a celebratory one.

Within the next 10 years, Vivian said she wants to have enough staff to implement programming in every school that wants it and possibly expand outside of Indiana. She also wants to acquire a space highlighting the foundation that could accommodate school field trips and similar activities.

BOXING AS MINISTRY?

Glenn McDonald, who for years pastored Zionsville Presbyterian Church, offers his volunteer services to an inner-city boxing ministry called “Team Achieve.” Why boxing?

For one thing, it’s a bit difficult to recruit inner-city kids who are leading troubled lives to participate in competitive flower arranging.

But is that it? Does the club exist solely because it appeals to the desire of innercity kids to fight?

Actually, it turns out that boxing is safer than approximately 25 other major sporting competitions. It’s much safer, for example, than bicycle riding, basketball and football.

And boxing offers inner-city kids substantial benefits, including: Three hours of calisthenics and boxing a day as a terrific way to burn off excess energy.

Punching a bag and, for that matter, a human (using gloves) probably has a tremendous cathartic effect for people who have anger to work through.

An organic ethic – not taught by the coach – exists within boxers not to fight with anyone who is untrained.

Team Achieve does not fundraise formally, but it does rely on donations to support trips to boxing tournaments around Indiana and, for that matter, across the U.S. The club has trained more than 350 state champions to date, including champions in Indiana Silver Gloves, Indiana Junior Olympics and Indiana Golden Gloves. Dog day care experiences big overhaul with new owners

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com In the lobby of Positively Canine hangs a sign that reads, “This is Our Happy Place.”

The sign was the first COVER STORY item installed by the new owners and conveys the essence of their business to staff and customers.

“It’s our life,” co-owner Leslie Hinchee said.

When Hinchee and Lori Fricks bought Positively Canine in September 2017, they had many plans for the cage-free dog facility that offers day care and overnight boarding.

They quickly remodeled the lobby and created a separate “sensitive souls” room for senior and smaller dogs, which averages five pets per day with space for more.

They added and updated doors and gates in the 8,000 square-foot building to ensure the pets’ protection.

This spring, the owners plan an exterior facelift, new fencing, new landscaping and an expanded exterior area for the dogs behind their Zionsville Road building.

The changes aren’t merely cosmetic. As a canine behavior expert, Fricks noticed that previous practices weren’t ideal for dog and human safety. They have changed the way overnight boarders are fed; they require dogs to be patient before being integrated with the other dogs in the morning; and trained dogs must wait before moving from room to room to avoid over-crowding the door.

“Over the course of time we have trained probably thousands of dogs, but training 35 of them at once was a new skill,” said Fricks, a Cicero resident.

Big changes

The cage-free dog day care has been through a lot in the past year.

Formerly named For the Dogs by founder Ray Bridges, the name was changed after Bridges was arrested last year for allegedly videotaping a coworker in the bathroom.

The business was sold to Sharra Christine, who wanted to implement some of the same changes Hinchee and Fricks recently completed, but the job proved to be too

“Our passion is behavior and fixing those dogs that are unhappy,” Fricks said. “Sometimes, we’re their last hope.”

Fricks and Hinchee started Positively Canine four years ago in Westfield with canine classes and private behavior sessions. Although they still offer in-home counseling and lead six-week adult and puppy classes, they have more plans for Positively Canine.

“We know what this can be,” Fricks said.

“We have a purpose, and we’re going to get there.”

much for one person. Christine was in search of someone to take over the business at the same time Hinchee and Fricks were trying to create a similar facility in Westfield.

“It was perfect timing,” Hinchee said.

“This is not a one-person job,” Fricks added.

During the first three months, Fricks and Hinchee each worked 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Adding new staff members has allowed them to cut back to 12-hour days, six days a week.

“The clients have been through a lot of change,” Fricks said. “They understandably looked at us with a little skepticism.”

Hinchee, a Noblesville resident, said it takes a certain temperament of dog to stay at Positively Canine. Dogs range in age from a minimum of 6 months to senior dogs in all sizes and breeds.

Dogs that are easy to redirect are ideal clients.

“Basically, they have to be savvy socially,” Fricks said. “Are they able to calm themselves back down?”

Fricks has been training dogs since the age of 12.

“It was an all-consuming passion to learn to understand their behavior and communicate with them,” she said. “I’ve spent my

“If we could find a way to get rid of the ones that we get rid of, that would be great,” Fricks said.

“If they’re sleeping on the couch, the other dogs leave them alone. It’s an unwritten rule, you play on the ground, you sleep on the couch,” Fricks said.

“It’s what this place is known for, and I’m not taking that couch away from somebody’s dog.”

The worn-out couches are piled in the back of the building until Hinchee and Fricks can figure out how to transport them for proper disposal. They are debating whether to buy a truck to facilitate couch removal.

Hinchee and Fricks welcome donated mattresses and tear-free couches that aren’t sleeper sofas or recliners, if they can be delivered to Positively Canine and the owners are notified ahead of time.

Questions and answers Commentary by Terry Anker The sage once said, “God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we’d listen twice as much as we talk.” That may well have been the intention, but in practice, it rarely seems to work out that way. Too often, we share our points of view with little notion of the perspective of the folks with whom we are interacting. With age comes a bit of wisdom and, if we are lucky, a slowing of our belief that we “know” what the other person has in mind without taking the time to ask them. Yet, we can still seem eager to hear our own voice.

In conflict with others at work or at home, we feel compelled to air our grievance. We explain our take on the perceived or real transgression and demand contrition or even retribution. But, how do we know that our assumptions are valid? 9 In working to resolve disagreement or performance issues in our businesses, we work to lead with questions rather than accusations. Young managers are coached to ask two questions before making any statements. The first must be a sincere effort to avoid allegation. The second question is designed to require the interrogator to listen to the answer of the first. Moreover, active listening can clear one’s mind of his or her own bias. Too often we hold our breath while others speak, our mouths already full with our response even though the other speaker has yet to communicate.

What point can be found in a question if we rarely bother to listen to the answer?

Remembering mox nix sticks Commentary by Ward Degler If you didn’t live in Germany in the 1950s, you probably never heard of mox nix sticks. They were PLAIN TALK what the GIs dubbed the mechanical turn signals on European cars.

The signals were actually metal semaphore flags that fit into the right and left door posts of Volkswagens, Mercedes and BMWs. On the Beemers and the Mercedes you operated the signals with a toggle switch — up for left, down for right. Mox nix sticks on the VW had to be lowered with a lever on the floor between the seats.

Mox nix, by the way, comes from the German macht nichts, which means it really doesn’t matter.

Some mox nix sticks had lights that flashed while they were active. The cheaper version was painted red. I remember some of them had beepers to remind you to cancel.

Several people held patents for turn signals in the United States, but who actually deserves the credit remains unclear. Percy Douglas-Hamilton patented a bumper-mounted device in 1907, but his patent expired after car makers rejected the idea as frivolous. Edgar Walz Jr. trod

a similar path in 1925. In 1929 Oscar Simler patented a turn indicator that can be seen today in the Smithsonian.

Before solid state electronics, the electric systems in our cars were assembled of miles and miles of wire. Connecting the turn signals was tricky, and it was easy to tie into the wrong wire. A neighbor accidentally hooked into his horn wire and every time he flicked his blinker the horn honked. He actually left it that way for a while to amuse the kids in the neighborhood.

When I started driving, turn signals were made by hand. You rolled down the window, stuck out your arm and signaled your turn. It was hand up for a right turn, straight out for a left turn, and straight down for a stop. It worked, but it could be pretty miserable when it rained.

Today’s turn signals work well if you use them. Oddly, while folks obediently rolled down their windows to signal a turn with their arm back in the day, many of today’s drivers don’t bother signaling at all.

To them I guess it’s all mox nix.

I’d like to share a couple “fashion” incidents that have left me utterly confused about how someone my age is supposed to dress.

HUMOR I was with my youngest at Forever 21, a cheap clothing store aimed at, as the name implies, young adults. Let me repeat, I. Was. With. Her. Not the other way around. As usual, it was a zoo, so I sent her along to Pac Sun while I stood in line with her purchase, a denim jacket. I see a current student across the way and wave, immediately besieged by two opposing thoughts: “Yes! I’ll be known as the cool teacher who shops at Forever 21!” and “No! I’ll be called the old biddy who is seriously mistaken about her ability to rock a circa 1986 crop-top.”

Then, three days later, I find myself at Forever 21 Red, the rack version of the aforementioned, with my older daughter.

Again, I’m simply there in the chauffer capacity, not as an actual shopper. While standing in the dressing room awaiting my child’s “outfit” reveal, a girl emerges from behind her door in a baggy tee-shirt, highwaisted jeans and Top Gun aviators. She assesses herself in the mirror, notices me and asks for my opinion, adding, “I mean, you were alive in the ‘80s, right?” Ouch.

Yes, I came of age amidst big hair, puffed sleeves and Tom Cruise-inspired everything, all of which are apparently back in style. And no, I don’t want to appear out-oftouch with contemporary fashion trends.

But if I embrace the retro-’80s look for myself, won’t I be committing the even bigger fashion faux pas of dressing too young?

Gorging on social media buffet Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have a friend who posts everything he eats on Facebook, or what could be called Feed Your Face Book.

HUMOR Joe photographs daytime snacks, late-night raids of the fridge, even the doughnuts he hid under the front seat of his car. He has uploaded 3,000 food pictures onto his Mac — including a few dozen Big Macs, I might add. He wants to create a new app called Snack Chat. It’s like Snapchat: The picture of the food disappears in a few seconds, as quickly as Joe’s lunch.

Unlike Joe, I’ve been uploading meals and then downloading them onto my shirts for more than 60 years. It’s not uncommon for people to ask me about certain food choices I have posted on my clothing for all my friends to see.

“Looks delicious, Dick. Wasn’t that the special at Olive Garden last week?”

“Been to a ball game, Dick? I recognize the mustard.”

Sharing your food intake encourages cheating, just like online dating. People sometimes fudge their age. And talking about fudge, what’s to stop a woman from

taking the Hershey bar she ate for lunch and Photoshopping it into a little plastic bag filled with baby carrots? Men can be just as deceiving. Sure, it looks like a $45 ribeye from St. Elmo, but it’s really just a cheap piece of beef off the grill at Golden Corral.

I eat a lot of meals in the car, so this would also create a bit of an inconvenience for me and jeopardize my already questionable driving record.

“Did I do something wrong, officer?”

“You suddenly pulled off onto the I-70 shoulder.”

“Sorry, I was just taking a photo of my fish sandwich.”

“Sir, this time I’m only going to issue a warning: Those are really high in sodium.”

I don’t think posting meal photos on Facebook will catch on here in Indiana.

Hoosiers are good people with high moral standards. They don’t want their kids looking at corn all day on the internet.

RG Décor owners Tom and Karen King wanted to stay in Zionsville when they searched for a location RELOCATION with more space. They ended up “as close as we could stay to town,” according to Tom, on 96th Street just west of Michigan Road.

“It’s a positive thing. It’s just the simple fact that there’s no space in town,” Tom said. “I think for us, the physical size of what we do, there’s just not a good fit.”

The 9,000-square-foot space more than doubles the 3,700 total square feet on Main Street that RG Décor will vacate April 14.

The business occupies three buildings on Main Street and will now be in one large location adjacent to the Kings’ carpet and rug-cleaning business they’ve owned since 1981.

Aside from the Kings, the rug and furniture gallery has five full-time employees, who all will come to the new location.

Being in multiple buildings in downtown Zionsville has required the additional challenge of always having at least one employee in each location.

“Our team needs a better environment to operate in,” Tom said.

and will give employees, who also are interior designers, space to work.

The new store will maintain the same hours. The Main Street location will close at 4 p.m. April 14, then move in to the new site during the weekend. The new location should be ready for businesses April 17 at its regular time.

“We’re not going to have any downtime,” Karen said.

The Kings took ownership of the Rug Gallery in 2014. They added furniture with RG Décor in 2015. On April 28, they will conduct a grand opening with prizes and food starting at 10 a.m.

“We will continue to have a presence in Zionsville,” Tom said. “We want to make sure we’re still a part of the community.”

Fundae’s now open

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Local residents Donny and Kas Miller noticed that there weren’t any ice cream options on the west side ICE CREAM of town, so they created their own. Fundae’s is now open on Whitestown Parkway after a ribbon cutting March 16.

The process of opening the shop began almost a year ago.

“It’s been a labor of love since then,” Kas said.

Twenty high school students work parttime at the shop. The Millers plan to hire

more assistance during the day. Every day, 32 flavors are available. Options frequently rotate among more than a hundred possibilities.

“We’ll always have the popular ones, but we’ll be changing it up all the time,” Kas said.

There are options for many dietary restrictions, including dairy-free, soy-free and dye-free.

The couple derived the name from the expression “Sunday, fun day.” The shop opens at noon during the week and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Doors close at 9 p.m. except Friday and Saturday, when they close at 10 p.m.

Federal Hill Commons add Flashback Fridays

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Noblesville Assistant Parks Director Mike Hoffmeister figures there is something for everyone in the CONCERTS nine free concerts announced for Federal Hill Commons.

“We want Federal Hill to be all encompassing in music types, so we want to feature all different kinds of music,” Hoffmeister said. “We understand that downtown Noblesville has a core population that we want to tap into, but we also want to tap into the young families and young adults that might want to come to Noblesville (from surrounding areas). The idea behind Flashback Fridays is to feature a specific genre of music.”

For instance, Classic Rock Experience, which opens the series Aug. 10, will feature ‘70s music.

Last season, there were five concerts at Federal Hill Commons, which opened in 2017. Four concerts were Tribute Concerts and the fifth was the Grand Opening concert.

Bands returning this summer are 16 Candles and Separate Ways. The Flying Toasters played Dillion Park in 2017. The Classic Rock Experience also played at Federal Hill last year. The rest are making their first appearance at Noblesville Parks Concert series.

There are five concerts Saturday nights in the Concerts at the Commons series and four Flashback Fridays concerts.

Shows in each series will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at First Merchants Pavilion.

Hoffmeister noted that Karen Waldrup, who will perform July 7, is an up-and-coming country artist from Nashville, Tenn.

Hoffmeister said the artists are regional performers from Chicago, Cincinnati and Nashville.

“The Four Freshmen are flying in from the West Coast, so this is a big step for us to create a better concert series than we had before,” Hoffmeister said.

The Four Freshmen were formed in Indianapolis in 1948. The last original member retired in 1993, but the present group carries on the name.

The Songbook Foundation maintains an exhibition gallery and a vast historical archive at the affiliated Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to establish a Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Museum, similar to the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and other such institutions.

According to a news release, the MAP Organizational Assessment will guide the staff, board of directors and other stakeholders in analyzing strengths and weaknesses and developing a roadmap for sustainability and advancement.

Thinking pink this spring Commentary by Elizabeth Morse I’m not sure if it’s because I am spending part of April in Paris. Maybe it’s this crummy weather still hangWINEderlust ing around? Whatever the reason, all I can think is pink! I’m suggesting rosé wines today. They are beautiful, food-friendly wines that are typically dry. Rosé is made from a variety of grapes. After the grapes are squished, dark-colored grape skins are allowed to hang out for a bit in the juice.

Basically, the dark skins stain the juice and create lovely pink hues.

Rosé shouldn’t be relegated to warm weather. Nope, it is an excellent choice year-round. Here are my current faves, all on the dry side of the spectrum: Gerard Bertrand Languedoc ‘Cote des Roses’ Rosé, France. At approximately $15 per bottle, this is a value-priced choice.

A tangy wine that seems like a cross between orange-cream and cranberry. It smells like peach and is a beautiful shade

of pale pink.

For just a few bucks more ($19), try Campuget 1753 Rosé. This is an unusual grape juice blend of 90 percent Syrah and 10 percent Vermentino. It’s bigger as rosé goes, but the richness is lively and attractive.

With just a little citrus flavor, what mainly stands out is a more traditional strawberry flavor. A great choice with barbecue.

The splurge today goes to a California wine, Robert Sinskey Rosé of Pinot Noir, Carneros. A vintner known for splendid Cabernet Franc delivers this pale-colored berry bomb. Tons of juicy, bright fruit and great acid make this bottle a winner for sipping and pairing, approximately $32.

Read before burning Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I truly believe good grammar can make your life more awesome. It can lead to job opportunities, GRAMMAR GUY romantic relationships and even a syndicated column that makes you hyperspecifically famous. Conversely, bad grammar can turn your life into a country song. You can lose your job, your truck, your honey and your dog if your grasp of language suffers.

Today, I want to encourage you to read your emails twice before sending them.

I’ll go one step further and say the same rule applies to tweets and Facebook posts. Fairly or not, people make judgments about you based on the level of correctness of your syntax.

The other day I received a hilariously ironic email that decried the state of grammar among our nation’s youths. The writer passionately went on for a pagelength paragraph about how our collective grammar is going down the drain.

She had some fair points; however, the subject line of her email was “Grammer Guy.” That’s my other column.

“Grammer Guy” is a column dedicated to the acting brilliance and smooth baritone voice of Kelsey Grammer. Did you know he received Emmy nominations on three different television series for portraying Frasier Crane?

OK, so “Grammer Guy” isn’t a thing.

Although, if enough people respond positively to this article, I just may have to write it. I only point out the irony of a gaffe like “Grammer Guy” because the lady who sent me the email was railing against the state of our careless and uninformed grammar.

There are a few easy ways to avoid spelling and grammar gaffes in your public communications. First, read your work aloud prior to sending it. You’ll catch at least half of your errors merely by reading to yourself. Secondly, get another set of eyes on your writing before hitting the send button.
