DISPATCHES Real estate statistics — Homes in Zionsville left the market slower and for less money in February. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Zionsville in February 2019 was $410,000, a decrease of 16.1 percent but still the highest price in the area.

Homes in the city sold in an average of 94 days, 10 days longer than in February last year.

Spring brush and limb collection — The Town of Zionsville’s Street and Stormwater Dept. will provide curbside brush and limb collection beginning April 15. This service provides Zionsville residents in the Urban Service district a means to dispose of certain pruning and yard debris. Legislators talk education issues at chamber panel

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com On March 8, nine legislators from the greater Hamilton County area took part in the most recent in a GOVERNMENT series of legislative breakfast panels presented by the Hamilton County chambers of commerce and the Hamilton County Business Issues Committee.

The panel discussion took place at Conner Prairie, where education issues, specifically school safety, dominated the conversation. The panel featured State Sens. J.D. Ford (D-Indianapolis), John Ruckelshaus (RIndianapolis), Victoria Spartz (R-Noblesville) and Jim Buck (R-Kokomo) and State Reps.

from the fund. Changes also allow funds received to be used for mental health and social/emotional wellness services for students. The bill also sets the requirement that at least one of the disaster drills conducted by each school must be an active-shooter drill and must be conducted within 90 days after the beginning of each semester.

Touching on school safety, Huston referred to the house’s budget bill (HB 1001).

“We included additional funding, several million dollars, for school safety, which can be used for the physical hardening of schools and mental health,” Huston said before mov-

ing on to the issue of teacher pay. “There’s been some debate about the teacher pay issue and the legislature’s obligation to that.

House Bill 1003 and the Republican caucus has said, appropriately, that we will provide district’s with money, but teacher pay should be decided at the local level based upon the factors that may be different.

“When I was on the school board at (Hamilton) Southeastern, we wanted things like smaller class sizes, but if you want smaller class sizes, you’re probably not going to be able to maximize teacher pay because you’re putting more people (on payroll),” Huston continued. “In (HB 1003), we want that to be

a transparent process. We want to set some guidelines for how those dollars are used.

Everyone desires to pay teachers as much as possible, but the factors that determine that are decided locally.”

Goodrich discussed a bill (HB 1224) he authored that would establish an intergenerational mentor pilot program.

“As we look at school safety, I truly believe that this relationship with senior citizens and folks volunteering in our schools is a big deal,” he said.

Goodrich has previously said he was inspired to write the bill after the May 25, 2018 shooting at Noblesville West Middle School, when community members reached out to him looking for a way to help.

Through the pilot program, individuals 55 and older would work with students as a mentor to help develop life skills.

House Bills 1003, 1004 and 1224 have been passed by the House and, as of press time, are being reviews by the Senate’s Education and Career Development Committee.

The 2019 legislative session ends April 29.

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Town of Whitestown will hold its second Viking Fest April 12-14 at Anson Acres to celebrate Norse EVENT culture.

“We have a village set up with the Norseman from Michigan Living History Society,” said Sarah Burns, event coordinator. “They do re-enactments and teach people about the way people lived back then. We also have the Vikings of North America setting up a village. They’re going to do demonstrations and fight re-enactments.”

Take Flight! Wildlife Education will be on-site to offer insight on falconry.

“For Viking Fest, we will be re-enacting medieval falconry, in costume and in character, as well as linking raptor natural history and wildlife conservation to our historical connections with these birds,” Mark Booth, Take Flight! wildlife education director, stated in an email.

The family friendly event will have a designated kids’ area.

“The kids will be able to make their own shields,” Burns said. “They will also be able to participate in an herbal class. There will

also be an animal sanctuary bringing different animals for the kids to see. We will also have artisans selling era-appropriate items, and we have Viking-style food. Turkey legs, scotch eggs, different soups, and then there will be some items for kids like grilled cheese.”

Guests can enjoy music by different bands, including Pictus, Highland Reign and Celtic Rain.

Previously, the Lucas property in Carmel and the Fitness Farm in Indianapolis have served as locations.

“So many of our members and their families live up in Carmel and Zionsville, in that area,” said Mary Whistler, development associate at the Eiteljorg. “With so many events at the museum, it’s fun to get out of our neck of the woods.”

Cowpokes & Cocktails, which supports educational programming at the Eiteljorg, is expected to raise $100,000 for programs such as artists-in-residence, bringing art workshops to students and children’s education.

Hoofin’ it for Morning Dove

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Runners can follow in the hoofsteps of the horses at Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding Center during the FUNDRAISER first ever Hoofin’ It Trail Run. Morning Dove is conducting the 5K run and 1-mile run/walk May 11 at its Zionsville facility, 7444 West 96th St.. The course will weave through the property.

“It gives (runners) the chance to take in a little piece of Zionsville that not many get to see,” said Bailee Reynolds, development director for Morning Dove. “We want to show Boone County as a whole what we’re doing.”

Horses used for therapeutic riding will be in the pastures along the course.

In addition to the 5K, a 1-mile family run and walk will be on a stroller-friendly path.

“It’s something fun and cheap,” Reynolds said.

This is the first time the center has played host to a trail run. Reynolds wants to raise awareness more than money and expects the event will continue at the new location in Whitestown when the facility is built.

Morning Dove has 12 horses at the facility for more than 60 riders who are currently enrolled. Reynolds said additional riders are on a waiting list. The new facility will be able to accommodate more horses and riders.

ZIONSVILLE VOLUNTEERS BACK ART EDUCATION

Art With a Heart provides hands-on visual arts experiences that educate and inspire at-risk children.

Because of a lack of resources, classroom teachers and parents do not always have the materials, money or the time to provide arts education on a regular basis. Approximately 70 percent of Art With a Heart students are at or below the poverty line. Several board members have Zionsville ties, including Mica Wilson, Aja May Pirtle and Jessica Stokley. The Zionsville volunteers help where they can, which includes fundraising. Art with a Heart doesn’t release the children’s last names.

Commentary by Ward Degler Somebody mentioned grocery shopping at the local A&P a few days ago. It got me thinking that I hadn’t seen PLAIN TALK or even heard of A&P for years.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. started out in New York City selling tea and coffee under the founding ownership and name of Geo Gilman & Co. Business was good, and 19 years later Geo Gillman launched the first-ever chain of grocery stores.

Up until that time, all grocery stores in the United States were one-off and privately owned, often mom-and-pop operations known as general mercantile stores where folks could buy their groceries, cattle feed, a bag of nails and, for the Mrs., a Sunday frock right off the rack.

A&P changed all that. Folks loved the new stores, including the self-service aisles where you could shop at your own pace and only had to deal with the clerk at the cash register.

By 1930, A&P had 16,000 stores scattered across 38 states. Everybody shopped at the A&P. Sadly, the firm grew complacent, ignored competition and soon became outdated.

Kroger stores, for instance, were founded only three years after A&P but made it their business to stay on top of the retail grocery sales. Kroger, for example, was the

first grocery retailer to build stores that had parking lots on all sides of the building.

A&P stores were often crowded into tight spaces where finding a convenient place to park was difficult.

By the late 1950s, A&P started closing unprofitable stores as other, bigger chains captured an ever-increasing share of the grocery business. The biggest thorn in A&P’s side was Walmart, founded in Rogers, Ark., by Sam Walton in 1950. By 1975, Walmart had pretty much eclipsed A&P’s grocery business with stores in every state in the union and in Canada and a guarantee of low prices on everything.

A&P struggled on for a few more years, closing more stores and reorganizing, but ultimately filed for bankruptcy and ceased grocery operations in 2015. Ironically, the company continued selling coffee as it had in the beginning until it was forced to liquidate.

A&P’s coffee brand was 8 O’clock, a familiar name today found in Kroger stores.

A footnote to this story involves the shopping cart, a convenience designed in 1937 by Sylvan Goldman, founder of Humpty Dumpty stores. One of his early customers was A&P. Ward Degler lives in Zionsville with his wife. He is the author of “The Dark Ages of My Youth ... and Times More Recent.”

Proposed Sycamore Flats to offer options for the renter-by-choice in the Village

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Zionsville residents Glenn Hoge and Tim Dall knew that if a mixed-use development were to come to Zionsville’s Village, the design had to be perfect.

COVER STORY When a 4-acre site became available in the southwest quadrant of Second Street and Sycamore Street in downtown Zionsville, the pair leapt at the opportunity to acquire it.

Hoge and Dall are commercial developers who have lived in Zionsville for 20-plus years.

“We are aware of local real estate development and very aware of this particular site. We are focused on the site at this time because it’s really at Main and Main of the Village,” Hoge said.

While designing the project, Hoge and Dall recognized there weren’t any apartment options in the Village.

“We want to address a market gap for the renter-by-

The project, called Sycamore Flats, calls for 184, one- and two-bedroom apartments, with a 5,000-square-foot retail opportunity.

“That retail could be a variety of different uses, a restaurant or a coffee shop. It’s a little too early to identify a user, but it’s ideal for someone that opened a dining establishment with outdoor dining because we are creating an outdoor seating area as part of the design,” said John C. Hart Jr., president of J.C. Hart Co. A third-party consultant worked with J.C. Hart Co. and estimated the annual household income for future Sycamore Flats residents at $77,000.

“That’s bringing $14 million of household income to the downtown area,” Hart said.

The average apartment size is proposed at just less than 1,000 square feet, with an average rent of $1,500. Amenities include a courtyard, swimming pool, an outdoor grilling and gathering area, a state-of-the-art workout center and more.

Another draw to the development is a parking structure for residents and 90 public parking spaces along the north, east and south perimeters of the project.

“The parking is what’s really unique about this property.

We have a stand-alone parking structure and the building wraps around almost the entire parking structure, so you don’t even know it’s wrapped inside the building,” Hart said.

“That will serve our apartment residents, and then we have created approximately 90 street-surface parking spaces there to serve the retail and for public parking.”

RETAINING THE VILLAGE’S CHARM

Hoge and Dall recognized the Village has a certain charm they want to incorporate into the project.

“The Village has sort of a character. Charm is one of the terms brought up, and I think there are residents that are concerned that our development will dilute somehow the current charm of the Village,” Dall said.

To retain the charm, Sycamore Flats will feature a change in the building facade to mirror separate facades already in the Village.

“We will break up the facade to get away from a monolithic structure to create that same quaint feel,” Dall said.

As the project moves through the Zionsville Plan Commission, Hoge and Dall expect to hear a lot of suggestions.

“There’s a lot of energy and a lot of input, and a lot of residents are very interested in what’s going on here,” Hoge said.

ENGINEERING CHALLENGES When Glenn Hoge and Tim Dall began working on plans for the 4-acre site at the southwest quadrant of Sycamore and Second streets nearly two years ago, they encountered several engineering challenges that were addressed prior to bringing the proposal to the Zionsville Plan Commission.

The site is in a flood way and flood plain with nearby wetlands.

“It has some access challenges, but it is such an asset to the town, in such a location, and it’s not representative of what we, as residents and other folks in the community, would like to see on the site,” Hoge said.

“It’s probably vacant because of all of the challenges.”

Regulations required Hoge and Dall to place fill material in the flood plain and then create compensatory storage for flood waters elsewhere in the flood plain.

“Tim and I made the decision early on not to bring a land-use approval to the town, to the residents, unless we were able to solve the engineering issues around the site,” Hoge said.

Commentary by Terry Anker In 1939, famed lyricist Jack Russell penned what would become a classic American standard for singer Frank Sinatra. In it, Russell demands that if his lover won’t “yield” to him entirely, then he has no interest in continuing the relationship. For him, it is “all or nothing at all.” It seems that brinksmanship is a long-utilized methodology to crush nuance and compromise: “Give me what I want or get out.”

American politics is no stranger to an all-or-nothing game of chicken. Elected officials and pundits squawk about the dire consequences of leaving any room for another point of view. Crush the opposition.

Demonize them. Litigate! Do it now!

Yet, paradoxically, they wax poetic about simpler times when folks would “reach across the aisle” to get work done.

Standards are material, and some things rightly cannot be accommodated. But, as we mature into fully formed humans, it becomes clearer that things are not so clear. Our fervent assumptions regarding our own infallibility wane, and we learn that sometimes, the perspectives of others are worthy of consideration.

Love and politics are prone to hyperbole and one-sidedness, and social media has exacerbated the affliction. We have come to increasingly live our lives protected from the perspectives of others. Whether we may learn, or even come to agree, is not relevant. We obsess over sameness. Our laws must be identical to those in other states.

Our leaders must say what we demand. Plus, our friends and family better give us 100 percent of what we want – or else!

Are we so sure that’s what we need? Even if so, who gave us the right to demand it?

Please, don’t Doo it again Commentary by Danielle Wilson Longtime readers will know that my husband’s real name is not “Doo.” The nickname came about after a controverHUMOR sial 2009 raccoon incident that resulted in him going out on our lawn after midnight with a pellet gun and no shirt, cussin’ up a storm. Being a native Kentuckian and having endured many hillbilly jabs through the years, I immediately went to one of my favorite films, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” about country singer Loretta Lynn and her husband, “Doo.” I bring all of this up because over the weekend we experienced an almost identical scenario to our original Butcher Holler event 10 years ago. I awoke to weird noises outside our bedroom window, at first thinking it was one of our kids and then wondering if the wind was blowing around the porch furniture. When I went to investigate, nothing seemed out of the ordinary; our ferocious guard dog Libby was simply laz-

ing in the hallway. Ruling out intruders and zombies, I returned to bed but eventually had to wake Doo, who immediately jumped into action. Naked.

He soon discovered a giant raccoon skulking along our roofline and began banging on the wall, yelling expletives in a strange voice. Doo then opened the window to try and, I don’t know, scare it? Mind you, this side of our house faces a major road, and he is completely nude, backlit in all his glory. All I could do was giggle. Here we go again.

He briefly debated driving to his parents for the gun, just as he did on that fateful night, but thankfully, wisdom prevailed. We both went back to sleep.

Yep, that’s my Doo. Peace out.

Editor, Last year, state Sens. John Ruckelshaus and Greg Taylor were discussing support for a hate crimes bill. This year, the bill has been heard in committee hearings and was set to go until an amendment was added deleting the “list” to a “bias” crime bill. I support the latter. In making a list of groups of people to protect from discrimination, most likely someone will be left out unless you add subtitles under the race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, gender identity and the LGBT. Did I get the list correct? Did I include everyone? See how difficult this is?

There should be one or two words in the bill to be a “catch-all” for all Hoosiers.

Now, speaking of hate, I have never experienced more hateful affiliations, associations, abuse, bullying, lies, threats, harassment, disrespect, hostility, prejudice, animosity, and the list goes on, toward our president. Our president is experiencing the true meaning of hate from a percentage of our American and non-American populace.

We should add his name to the list if our Indiana Legislature is going to vote on a “list.”

I’m OK — you’re OK Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Was it my ego, laziness or just a deceptive nature? I had resisted this action for several years, but it was finally time: I HUMOR decided to update my Facebook picture. I also updated my bio pictures on the WISH-TV website. These were not photos of who Dick Wolfsie is; these were photos of who Dick Wolfsie was.

In one replaced photo, I was standing in front of Market Square Arena. In another, I was holding my dog, Barney (gone since 2004), and one of me with the late Mayor Bill Hudnut at an Indian’s game at Bush Stadium.

Updating my photos caused quite a stir in cyberspace. Classmates I had not heard from in years felt compelled to check with me, asking if I was well: “You looked great for 20 years on Facebook. Not anymore,” said my old buddy, Phil. “I hope it’s nothing serious.”

This from an old flame, Carol: “You were always so adorable. What happened? Do you still whistle all the time? Like, how annoying was that on a date? I’m assuming you also stopped shaking your leg. Are you still scatterbrained?”

I asked my wife if these memories of me were accurate.

“Yes, you still whistle constantly. Even in the morning when you are working,” Mary Ellen said, “Other than a Disney dwarf, who does that? And, yes, you also bounce your leg when you watch TV.” “OK, but am I still spacey?”

“Let’s see. In the last month, you found your cellphone in the neighbor’s garage — twice. You found your car keys in the cat food bag and last night you found your appointment book in the wash.”

“Give me some credit. There was a time I couldn’t find anything.”

But back to the new Facebook photo. I got so many emails asking, “Are you OK?” that I have already changed it to a close-up of me outside the RCA Dome, where I look a lot younger. As you know, the RCA Dome grew old, so they decided to tear it down and start over.

I’m seriously considering that option for myself.

Stefanie Childs and Lindsay Lyon have waited a long time to bring their women’s clothing store to Main DOWNTOWN Street in Zionsville.

After moving five times in three years, their shop, Blooms & Linen, has acquired the spot previously occupied by Ballerinas and Bruisers at 180 South Main St. “We’ve waited for something to open on the brick street, and nothing ever opens up,” Childs said.

“That was always our end goal,” said Lyon, adding they won’t move again.

The two-story space will house three areas of the owners’ business – the clothing boutique, essential oils and a photography studio, which they plan to rent out.

Childs, a professional photographer, hopes to have the photography studio available this spring.

“The fact that we can merge three businesses within these two stories, that’s basically our entire life for those three businesses. That was perfect,” Childs said.

Childs and Lyon completed the move from Pine Street in three days.

“We jumped on it,” Childs said.

Although the downstairs retail section has less square footage, the owners plan to offer the same quantity of clothing.

“The way we’re placing things now we’re forced to be more strategic,” Lyon said. “But we truly haven’t downsized.”

Childs is amused when new customers say they did not know the store has been downtown Zionsville since 2016.

“You can literally see (our old storefront) from here,” Childs said, Childs and Lyon are delighted to be in the center of Zionsville events.

“We feel like we’ll finally be included,” Childs said.

New director joins TherAplay

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Children’s TherAplay in Carmel recently hired Kathy Pelletier as its new executive director. She began in HIPPOTHERAPY January at the largest equine-assisted physical and occupational therapy facility in the nation.

The nonprofit provides hippotherapy to children with various mental- and healthrelated issues from around the state.

“We take care of children within the special needs community under a number of diagnoses,” Pelletier said.

Her main goal as executive director is to spread the word about Children’s TherAplay in the local community.

“I really hope to get out into the community and share the stories of these families and these kiddos,” Pelletier said. “I want to help the community really understand how life-changing what is taking place here really is.”

Part of the way she wants to help spread the word is through fundraising events.

“I want the community to understand how they can help support the mission and make it sustainable for us,” Pelletier said.

IRT presents new version of ’Amber Waves’ editorial@youarecurrent.com Almost 20 years after the full-length version of “Amber Waves” premiered at the Indiana Repertory Theatre in 2000, the heartland drama by IRT’s playwright-in-residence James Still returns to the Upperstage April 2 to 28.

Featuring music by Tim Grimm and Jason Wilber, “Amber Waves” follows a year in the life of an Indiana family as they face the prospect of losing their farm.

Originally a one-act play, the newest version of “Amber Waves” takes a deeper look at the commitment, struggle and beauty of farm and family life. For Still, the story draws inspiration from his own Midwestern background and the loss of his family farm in Kansas.

Returning to the stage will be musician Tim Grimm, who previously played the role of Mike and wrote the original songs and music with Jason Wilber for the 2000 premiere. This time, in addition to the original pieces, Grimm has partnered with multiinstrumentalist Rachel Eddy to create music for the production, which they will play live onstage during each performance.

MSP presents ‘Going Going Gone’

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com Steven Marsh is a veteran stage actor who got his start in community theater nearly 20 years ago in MontiTHEATER cello, Fla. Now, after two decades of being on stage, the Carmel resident is stepping out of his comfort zone to direct Main Street Productions’ presentation of “Going Going Gone,” a comedy centered around four sports journalists in a press box covering a Major League Baseball game.

Penned by writer/Major League Baseball announcer Ken Levine, “Going Going Gone” has an eight-show run April 12 through April 28 at Westfield Playhouse, 1836 W. Ind. 32, Westfield.

Marsh, who moved to Carmel in 2005, is making his directorial debut. The play has four cast members and explores an array of topics that most everyday people can relate to.

“It’s four sportscasters doing their jobs during a single, crazy baseball game, but it’s also about the changing landscape of the news media, the meaning of life and other bigger pictures,” Marsh said. “I love that it’s

Couple appears in ‘42nd Street’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Scott Martin met his future wife at a radio glee club, but fell in love during a Rodgers & HamMUSICAL merstein musical.

The glee club was part of Dave Smiley’s Morning Show at WZPL. “Jen was in it. I auditioned and got in, met Scott Martin Jen at rehearsal and the world stopped turning,” Martin said. “We then auditioned for the show ‘Oklahoma!’ at Wayne Township Community Theater (in 2011) and we were cast opposite each other as Will Parker and Ado Annie. Through time together and lots of kissing scenes, we quickly fell in love.”

The Carmel couple are appearing in “42nd Street” at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre April 4 to May 19.

“This will be my third show at Beef & Boards and I’m incredibly honored to have the opportunity to work here,” Jen said. “I was in ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ and ‘Elf’ this past holiday season.”

Jen plays Ethel of the chorus girl hopefuls in the musical.

“I adore tap dancing, so ‘42nd Street’ has always been on my radar since it’s such an incredible tap show,” Jen said. “I really enjoy this type of role because you have so much room to play. While there are leading characters with lines to tell the story, it is the responsibility of the Jen Martin entire company to create the world these characters exist in. Without having as many details in the script about my character, I get the opportunity to make decisions about who my character is and further develop who Ethel is.”

Martin, a 2002 Zionsville High School graduate, is appearing as Pat Denning in “42nd Street.” He previously performed in “42nd Street” in 2007 at the Artists’ Studio in Fishers.

The couple have two sons, Will, 3, and Josh, 1 1/2 years old. Jen said they had to make sure doing the show was feasible with double time commitments.

Christchurch: A resilient New Zealand city

Commentary by Don Knebel The recent mosque massacres are the latest of many catastrophes to hit Christchurch.

If history is any indication, this TRAVEL dynamic city of approximately 400,000 on New Zealand’s South Island will come back from its horrors stronger and more united than ever.

In 1856, Queen Victoria granted Christchurch a charter, making it New Zealand’s first city. Gothic Revival buildings soon followed in the city center. In 1864, when the city had fewer than 500 male residents, the local Anglican bishop began constructing a cathedral in Cathedral Square. Three times before the iconic Gothic cathedral was completed in 1904, it was damaged by earthquakes that destroyed buildings in the city. In 1947, a fire near the cathedral killed 41 people and destroyed a number of buildings in the area. In September 2010 and again in February, June and December 2011, major earthquakes struck Christchurch, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of buildings and the deaths of 185 people.

The tower of the cathedral toppled and the remainder of the church was severely compromised, leading to calls for its demolition.

The Bridge of Remembrance, an arch honoring New Zealand’s war dead, was badly damaged. Estimates of the damage from the earthquakes exceeded $20 billion, an average of $50,000 for each resident.

Rather than abandoning the center city, government officials decided to rebuild it, with a focus on the future and buildings designed to survive future earthquakes. To accommodate anticipated population growth, the plan contemplates building 50,000 new homes by 2028. The cathedral will be rebuilt at a cost of about $100 million and restored

as the seat of the bishop. The government of New Zealand has committed more than $700 million to build and equip new schools.

In 2016, the repaired and strengthened Bridge of Remembrance was rededicated as a symbol of the city’s resilience.

I appreciate reader feedback, and I try to respond to each email and letter I receive.

Believe it or not, at GRAMMAR GUY least seven of you are reading Grammar Guy on a consistent basis! That’s humbling.

If you had a time machine to go back and redo one moment of your life, what would you change? For me, I would learn where to place the word “only” in a sentence properly. I’m going to learn my lesson once and for all; after all, Grammar Guy should get this right (lest the readers think him a dullard).

Only is like a key fob with weak batteries — it’s effective just when it’s as close to the thing it’s modifying as possible. So, when you move “only” around in a sentence, it gunks up or completely changes the meaning of your sentence. The proximity of “only” to the word or phrase it modifies is crucial.

The more I look at the word “only,” the more it reminds me of the way we use the word “just.” In these examples, when you see “only,” substitute it in your mind with the word “just.”

Only vampires bite humans in the neck.

This sentence implies no one besides vampires bites humans in the neck area.

Vampires bite humans only in the neck.

Here, the implication is that vampires don’t bite humans anywhere else. Here’s a quick public service announcement: If you’re thinking about getting a neck tattoo, don’t.

Vampires only bite humans in the neck.

This use of only here implies that vampires don’t do anything else to humans except bite their necks. Vampires don’t pick humans’ noses, they don’t style humans’ hair and they don’t jiggle the loose skin on humans’ upper arms.

Vampires bite only humans in the neck.

This suggests vampires don’t bite ostriches, giraffes, flamingos, or anything else in the neck — just humans.

Apparently, I understand grammar best when I use nerdy examples like vampires and time machines.
