District 3 incumbent faces challenger in May primary

Tom Schuler, a 3-year member of the Zionsville Town Council, will face off for the Zionsville Town Council District 3 seat against Election 13-year Zionsville resident David J. Boggs, who is seeking his first political office.

David J. Boggs Age: 54 Why do you want to run for elected office? I have a history of holding leadership positions through my education and my career. I always considered running Boggs for public office, but as many have felt, I did not have time. I began to find myself taking a very active interest when several items came to the forefront, the first being the proposed I-865 interchange ramp at Cooper Road and most recently the proposed CarDon complex currently in front of the town council for 334 and Cooper Road.

What are your top priorities if elected? I feel that the town needs to be responsible about development in order to protect the village, the equestrian areas and most of all the ambiance of Zionsville. I’m concerned that the direction of some alterations to the comprehensive plan has the potential to negatively impact our downtown businesses.

I think that the town had laid out a solid comprehensive plan, and yet that plan is continually being altered and rezoned in ways that are against what was originally approved. While some change may be necessary, at what point do we stick with the plan?

What area do you think is Zionsville’s greatest need for improvement? Responsible growth that protects the very heritage of Zionsville.

During the past three years as a town council member I feel I have brought a lot of common sense to decision Schuler making, kept an open mind toward all proposals, and tried to forge a strong relationship with key stakeholders in the community including local businesses, the school system and the citizens. I would like to continue these efforts.

What are your top priorities if elected? Continue economic development. Assessed value in the community has shifted from 97 percent residential/3 percent commercial to 90 percent residential/10 percent commercial in the past 3 years. This is important because it diversifies the tax base that the community has to operate with and brings greater economic vibrancy to the community and its businesses. I would like to continue toward the goal of 80 percent residential/20 percent commercial by the year 2020.

It is important for Zionsville to continue to make investments in our community which enhance our unique nature. I believe the parks and pathways that have been developed in the past make Zionsville a family friendly and physically active community. It also helps to unite the community. I hope to continue my work on the pathways committee to continue to see the expansion of these pathways and green spaces.

What area do you think is Zionsville’s greatest need for improvement? We need continued economic development to fund the needs of the community, the schools and the library.

Favorite local restaurant: I have gained weight enjoying the food at just about every establishment!

New TPCA principal – Traders Point Christian Academy has appointed Erica Buchanan as the new K-4 principal and director of curriculum and instruction. Buchanan most recently served as principal of Sunnyside Elementary in Lawrence Township, where she improved the school’s rating in her first year as principal. Current TPCA K-6 Buchanan principal Shane Schaffer will become the middle school/junior high principal next year, allowing high school principal Jason Klingerman to focus exclusively on the high school program.

Zionsville man sentenced – Alan Wayne McCormick of Zionsville was sentenced to 70 months in prison on March 23 after pleading guilty to five counts of armed bank robbery.

The robberies happened between July 2012 and March 2014 at banks in Eminence, Poland, Ladoga, Linden and Darlington, Ind. McCormick stole a total of nearly $62,000 from the banks and has been ordered to pay restitution in full.

Zionsville a 2014 Tree City – Zionsville has been named a 2014 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The town achieved the recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observation and proclamation. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Woman known for generosity, stubbornness Commentary by Ward Degler I did not know Martha Ann Godby. But, after listening to family and friends’ recollections at her funeral last week, I feel as Plain talk though I did.

The thing about Martha, they all agreed, was her incredible generosity.

“And her stubbornness.”

Everyone said the same thing. She was lovingly generous to a fault. And once she had made up her mind about something, she stubbornly held to it.

She doted on her grandchildren and spent as much time with them as possible. Her kitchen was always well stocked with iced oatmeal cookies, and the closet was always filled with toys and games. She apparently had stockpiles of other generous acts too, for anyone – friend or stranger – that showed up with a need. Any need.

Her son-in-law, Rob Mountcastle, added a couple stories that vividly illustrated both traits. The stubborn trait came to light when he stopped by to see her one day and noticed she was carrying a jar lid filled with water.

“What’s the water for?” he asked.

“For the cricket,” she said nonchalantly.

“What cricket?”

“The thirsty one in the family room.”

Martha then led him to the family room and bade him listen. There was a loud chirp.

“The cricket,” she said. A smoke detector battery in need of replacement, he thought. He told her.

“It’s a cricket,” she insisted. More chirps ensued. On impulse he timed them with his watch.

Then he accurately predicted exactly when the next chirps would come.

“Her eyes got as big as saucers,” Rob said.

“She no longer insisted it was a cricket, but she still left the water.”

Her generosity had everything to do with Rob’s job as a postal employee.

“She wanted to support the company that I worked for,” he said. “Her way of doing that was to fill the postage-paid reply envelopes from all the junk mail she received with anything and everything she could lay her hands on, and mail them. She knew the mailers at the other end would have to pay the postage, and as far as she was concerned, that helped pay my salary.”

generosity that springs from her daughter Jannell, Rob’s wife. She seems to have inherited her mother’s spirit of selfless giving.

A number of years ago a man Jannell had never met was dying of kidney failure. Without hesitation, she volunteered to donate one of her kidneys.

Miraculously, she was a perfect match. She met the man for the first time in the recovery room after the surgery.

Like I said, I never knew the woman, but obviously, her spirit lives on.

“Have you seen extreme poverty?” was the first question Scott Neeson, former President of 20th Century Fox Interphilanthropy national, asked me upon arrival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, a few years ago. My answer was yes, as after 10-plus years of doing humanitarian work around the world, I thought I had. Thirty minutes later I realized I was so wrong.

Scott took me to one of the largest dumps in the world, Steung Meanchey, where families were living and children were searching for food.

I will never forget the smell as long as I live.

Scott had given up one of the most powerful positions in Hollywood after realizing producing films like Titanic, Star Wars and Brave Heart was not what he really wanted to do with his life.

He gave up the life of luxury—boats, cars, and first class travel – to make a difference.

ZFD firefighter receives two honors

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com In the last two months, Zionsville firefighter Justin Spivey has received two top honors for excellence in his job. He achievement earned the Paramedic of the Year award at the 2015 annual Firefighter’s Ball in February and recently became one of eight people in the Indianapolis area to receive the 2015 St.Vincent Angel Medic Award.

“It’s always an honor when it’s your peers nominating you for an award just doing your daily routine,” Spivey said.

The St. Vincent Angel Medic Award is given to individuals that have been nominated by their peers and leaders to be recognized for outstanding patient care and performing their duties in a manner that reflects the St.Vincent Health core values.

“To say Justin is worthy of this award is an understatement. The praise and respect that Justin has earned in this last year has been unbelievable,” stated ZFD firefighter/paramedic Scott Mamaril, chairperson for the St.Vincent Angel Medic awards committee for the fire department. “Justin is a great representation of what the Zionsville Fire Department works toward every day with professionalism, patient care and serving our community.”

led to Spivey’s honors. As a paramedic, which requires more training than that of an emergency medical technician, Spivey has spent a great deal of time learning through clinical hours, hours in the ambulance and emergency room and with critical care training.

While the training can be draining for most, “Justin has been the opposite,” Gilliam said. “He’s looking for stuff to learn and share with his crews.”

Spivey started as a volunteer with the Zionsville Fire Department and was hired in 2009 to a full time position.

“I always enjoy helping people and wanted to make a difference,” Spivey said. “I’m living the dream.”

TPCA vocalist caps senior year with perfect score at state

By Dawn Pearson • news@currentzionsville.com Peter Sanders is no stranger to musical accolades, but the Traders Point Christian Academy senior recently hit a new high music note: a perfect score at a state competition.

The Zionsville resident was joined by an elite group of students in earning a perfect score at the Indiana State School Music Association state competition last month. The event featured students from across Indiana performing solos and ensemble pieces for judges.

“It is really quite an honor to receive the perfect score. I was beyond surprised. I felt like this was the perfect way to end my high school singing career,” Sanders said.

Gail Powell, the choir teacher at TCPA, helped Sanders prepare for the state competition.

“Peter has challenged himself to take Group 1 solos all through high school, and it was amazing to see him finish his senior year with a perfect score,” Powell said.

Sanders has been studying under Powell for eight years, and the student credits his teacher with much of his success.

“She is my musical hero and inspiration,” Sanders said. “She teaches us that as we should always strive to do our best, and that will bring the greatest satisfaction. I’m so thankful for what she’s taught me.”

Although he’s achieved an honor few others have, Sanders is not planning to pursue music as a career.

“Next year, I will be attending Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. I plan on studying sports management and communications,” he said. “I will always continue to sing. I also hope to keep playing piano, guitar, and saxophone.”

Zionsville Indoor Percussion group captured its first state championship March 21 at Ben Davis High School. The group from music Zionsville Community High School beat out 11 other groups in its division to claim the top spot in the Indiana Percussion Association state finals.

“The students have learned how to work hard, work together, and to enjoy the process of becoming great,” ZCHS Band Director Tom Landrum said. “I am very proud of their effort and that of

our staff.”

The group had previously not finished higher than third place at the state competition. This year, they performed a program called Balance composed and arranged by Don Barrett.

Percussion director Orion Avery, in his second year at ZCHS, helped guide the students to the top.

“It has been such a privilege to lead this hardworking and dedicated group of Zionsville students,” Avery said. “A state championship would not have been possible without their passion and commitment throughout the season.”

Eagle students state champs

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A team of students from Eagle Elementary finished first in the state in chess after a full day of competition and an exciting lastchess minute finish.

Third grade teammates Naitik Rambhia, Allie Johnson, Jake Cero and Max Kitchell competed against 59 other teams and 230 players in the third grade and under division at the Scholastic Chess of Indiana team tournament held March 22 in Terre Haute.

The outcome came down to the final game, with Allie drawing a tie. If she had lost her match, the trophy likely wouldn’t have come to Zionsville, chess coach Michael Johnson said.

Allie had no idea the result was up to her until the match was over.

“I wasn’t exactly sure how everyone else did at that point,” Allie said.

Two teams of Eagle Elementary third graders

competed at the tournament. Johnson said that his goal for the “A team” was a top five finish and his goal for the “B team” was a top 20 finish. The B team finished 12th overall.

The players on the “A team” were proud of the “B team.”

“They were a really important part,” said a team member Max Kitchell. “If they weren’t there, I never would have gotten as good as I am.”

The two teams finished fifth and second at the regional level, although the roster shifted between the two teams for the state championship.

Team B members are Jack Hargreaves, Maeve Campbell, Zoe Chappell and Evan Reynolds.

Naitik and Allie competed earlier this year in the individual state championship, with Naitik finishing fifth and Allie finishing 48th. All of the students participate in the Eagle Elementary chess club and are part of the competing arm of the club’s team.

zWORKS coworking space to open its doors in April

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com After several months of searching the for an ideal spot in the Village, the coworking office concept zWORKS is making cover story final preparations to open on Cedar Street in mid to late April in a building that originally housed the town’s firehouse.

The space has required minimal remodeling to create the work environment sought by Dan Moyers, zWORKS’ chairman and executive director.

“The way it’s naturally laid out appeals to the different work spaces,” Moyers said. The concept is designed to include several zones that are conducive to different kinds of work.

Dawn Ter Horst, senior interior designer and business development for David Rausch Studio, designed the interior after clarifying the vision with Moyers and other stakeholders.

With a collaborative area in the front, private desks available on both a reserved and firstcome basis, a cafe and a conference room, Ter Horst has created a space that is designed to appeal to a variety of work styles and purposes.

“We’re using everything as is, like the bar that’s going to be the cafe meeting space,” she said. Elements such as solid wood built-in cabinets and shelves used by the previous tenant, Zionsville Lighting Center, are being repurposed as desks. Tiles will be removed from the drop ceiling light fixtures to create an industrial feeling.

“To see (Dan’s) vision come to life is really cool,” Ter Horst said. “It’s so neat to have something this innovative in Zionsville. It speaks to where we’re going.”

A patio in the back will provide what Moyers believes may be one of the first outdoor work areas in a local coworking space. The patio is accessible through the fire station’s original garage, which will become the Start-ups Garage: a dedicated place for entrepreneurs to grow their businesses.

Moyers had been looking for space near the Village within walking distance of shops and restaurants downtown and the park for those who would like a break or some exercise.

“It’s a block from downtown, but not in the fray,” Moyers said.

Funding and founders

Funding for zWORKS comes from a maximum of 100 founding members initially who will have access to the workspace as well as $10,000 in appropriated funds from the town. This seed money was approved by the Zionsville Town Council in January and released in early February.

Members of council have walked through the building during the “Dusty Boots Tours” offered to the public every Sunday in March.

“They can see how their dollars are being utilized,” Moyers said.

The tours have been popular according to Moyers, with dozens of people getting an early look at zWORKS. So far, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The thing I’m proud of the most is that people have said, ‘You’ve really put a lot of thought into

this,’” Moyers said. “When you’re asking people to pay money, you’ve got to deliver a good experience at a good value.”

There will be regular programming from businesses such as Gutwein Law, KSM Consulting and Indiana Business Bank. These established companies will offer professional advice in areas such as copyright law, debt structure or other subjects where new businesses may need assistance.

Ken Minturn is one of 85 zWORKS founding

members as of press time. He lives and works in Broad Ripple but was looking for an acceleration type of space for his start-up website.

“The connections I can make from [zWORKS] gives me a greater potential than the Broad Ripple coworking space,” he said.

Minturn is founder of the website Kenji, which is being developed to match businesses and individuals who have a specific need or issue with a professional that can address that need.

Being able to compare notes from his startup with a variety of business models is one factor that attracted Minturn to zWORKS. “Just being around other people who are going through the same issues, they may be doing a totally different thing, but they’re still facing the same issues,” he said.

The ability to bounce ideas off of one another and keep each other motivated is also appealing.

Minturn found that working from home wasn’t always the best way to stay motivated, and he anticipates that it will help being around others if he should hit a roadblock.

Josh Garrett, CSO and co-founder of MOBI, has become a founding member despite having an office nearby. He looks forward to collaborating with others whose professional backgrounds differ from his.

“You have a range of folks to look at different perspectives on problems you’re trying to solve and want feedback on,” he said.

“I will be utilizing a space like this for as long as I possibly can,” said Minturn. “The price of outside office space is not very favorable to a startup.”

Can Cruz be the real deal?

Is Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) really that “scary,” as many members of the (liberal) media and Democratic Party have painted him? We don’t know. He is different; we’ll allow that. Cruz has been in the so-called limelight for all of two years, and after listening to his off-the-cuff campaign announcement (no Tele-Prompter for that guy) last week, here is what we came away with: He credits Jesus for fueling his father’s return to the family fold; we need to dump the IRS and ObamaCare; and the Common Core just needs to go away. On the first, who’s to refute it? As to the rest, we’re in; where do we sign up? But, really, could this be a case of a candidate rolling out his agenda and tailoring it for the audience? After all, he was at Liberty University, the prominent, private Christian institution of higher education in Lynchburg, Va. Maybe not, but we all should watch to see if he stays true as time goes by. Meanwhile, a haiku for Republican Party leadership: Election cometh Too many candidates now Can’t be serious We’ve seen the March Madness-style, Republican presidential-hopeful brackets on social media. It’s supposed to be funny, but it’s not.

The GOP leadership is so dysfunctional that it has a veritable Sweet Sixteen of candidates. If there’s a favorite – and many believe that after an exhaustive search, another Bush (this time, Jeb) will be the answer – it’s probably best to focus on him. Scott Walker (we still like him), Cruz and Mike Huckabee are there to further divide the party, and then throw in Rand Paul and Ben Carson, and possibly George Pataki and Lindsey Graham, among others, and the party could have a huge mess on its hands. But the GOP majors in huge messes. Look no further than the aftermath of Mitt Romney’s beatdown of President Barack Obama in the first of three president debates last election cycle. He had his man down, and he let him back up. We marvel at how Republicans continually screw up the proverbial two-car funeral.

Stone houses

The classic children’s book, The Three Little Pigs, teaches that wolves have an amazing lung capacity and that a stone house is better than a wooden or straw one. Stone houses last a long time. In Peru for a conference, it seemed imprudent to be in the South American country without making the trek to the famed, ancient city of Machu Picchu. The trip was replete with the challenges and peculiarities found so far off the beaten path – trains don’t run in some places during the rainy season due to frequent mud slides, locals drink a beer made from corn and strawberries (yes, it is pink) to wash down a meal of Guinea Pig (yes, the rodent), and central heat (let alone air conditioning) is a luxury beyond even the most deluxe hotels. But, the sheer beauty of the place and the ingenuity of the native people makes for a compelling journey.

The city, built as a retreat by the last of a long line of Inca (loosely translated as King), is believed to have taken many years and as many as

8,000 people to build. The permanent residents of 300 or so were doubled when the Inca and his entourage rolled into town. Engineers perfected stonework, water distribution, and agricultural terracing allowing for what must have been a high quality of life for the privileged few.

With the Spanish invasion, technologies like glass mirrors were introduced. While the Inca may have seen themselves for the first time, we see them only in the stone they left behind.

Like the Inca, the Spaniards did not believe in a shared culture. Maybe, those who live in stone houses shouldn’t throw glass. Ultimately temples were replaced with cathedrals and stone gave way to stucco. Even as we build great monuments, can we expect to enjoy them?

A while back I was on my way home from dropping a kid at dance/tae kwon do/volleyball/soccer and heard a blip for a nonprofit that organizes letters and care packages for American forces abroad. I’d been contemplating “adopting” a soldier for a while; my children often seem oblivious to anything outside our suburban bubble and could seriously use an injection of patriotism.

So I went to the group’s website, filled out the application and received a phone call from a delightful elderly lady about a week later.

She assigned us two troops, both stationed in Afghanistan, and explained the rules and expectations. Basically we needed to write once a week, send a care package once a month, and not divulge classified material or include porn. Done! I added the letter-writing to the chore chart and shared the news with the kids. They were less than thrilled.

“This is stupid!”; “They don’t care about our lives!”; “What do I even say?” Jeeze! Could they be anymore bratty? I suggested they talk about the Super Bowl, college basketball, their hobbies, the weather, how mean their mom is for making them do this. “It doesn’t matter what you write! Just let them know we are thinking of them.”

Hindering my cause was the fact that we never knew if our notes and “survival essentials” of National Enquirer, Skippy peanut butter and Axe deodorant were arriving. The lady had said the guys may not be able to write back, especially if they were running mountain ops, but she encouraged us to keep up the support. If nothing was returned, we could rest assured they were getting “the goods.”

Then just the other day, two months after our adoptions, three letters arrived from one of our troops, thanking the kids profusely for their efforts. He said he truly looked forward to his weekly “update.” We learned about his young daughter and that he’d be missing the birth of his second; and that he’s a Broncos fan and hates the Patriots.

Finally, my kids understood. This isn’t about adding an extra chore to their lists. This is about making a personal connection with a young soldier who is making sacrifices for them every single day, and about getting the chance to say “Thank you.”

We hope to hear from our other troop soon, but even if we don’t, it’s all good. I’ve already noticed a change in how my children view military personnel, and how they pay a little more attention to the news. “Write Letters” remains on the chart, but I’d argue my kids don’t see it as a chore anymore. Mission accomplished! Peace out.

Brian, Brian, pants on fire Commentary by Dick Wolfsie When I show up to see my CPA at tax time, Clare clears her desk so I can spread out all my shoeboxes filled with receipts. First, humor she asks how much income I had last year. That’s when I say: “It’s always about money with you people, isn’t it?”

When I walked in this week, she said, “Well, if it isn’t Brian Williams!” I was flattered, and not surprised that she mistook me for the dashing NBC reporter, but my ego was soon deflated when she explained the reference. “I saw your column in the paper, the one where you boasted you completed your 2014 taxes in January.” Then she directed the tip of her number two pencil at the huge stack of papers I had piled on her desk. I must have turned red because she jotted down something on her legal pad. Any reference to being in the red has to be carefully documented.

I told my wife about my experience with Clare, and Mary Ellen said that after reading my columns over the years, she noticed a disturbing pattern of deception had clearly developed. “Like Brian Williams, you have become very adept at manipulating the facts. Of course, Brian is way better than you at it,” she said, “by about 9.94 million a year.”

I thought that ended the discussion, but Mary Ellen then added: “I think you should go back to every one of your 800 columns and print a retraction for each exaggeration and flat-out lie you told.

to me where I do not appear to be anything but the intelligent, loving wife that I am. Oh, and a superb cook.”

I was going to have a lot of work to do.

To test the waters, I flipped to a random newspaper humor column I’d written where I recounted how our camera had been stolen at the Bermuda airport and with it, all our vacation photos. I claimed that the thief saw my attached ID tag, and emailed the photos back to me along with a critique of my picture-taking ability. He even commented about how lovely my wife was. It was a little creepy, but he did offer some good advice on a more flattering hairstyle for Mary Ellen. The camera being stolen? Yes, that was true. The rest?

Not so much.

I read another. In this one I claimed I went into the garage one night naked to get a can of soda.

The door locked behind me and I spent the entire night sleeping in my car. The truth is I was actually getting a can of beer. Okay, I feel better now.

I think Brian Williams should tell the public that even if it makes his stories less interesting, he will from this moment on always be 100 percent truthful. Personally, I’m not ready to make that promise.

Artist Michael Gorman was hosted by the Evan Lurie Gallery at 30 W Main St. in Carmel earlier this month. Current sat down with Gorman for an interview during his visit. art Q: Tell us about your background.

A: I suppose I’ve never really been far away from art.

My mom is a great painter, so I was always around art. I went off to the military for four years right after high school, and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. After I got out of the military I wanted to do architecture, went to college at the University of Kansas, and then moved over to industrial art and design.

Q: What led you to your career in painting” A: When I took a painting class, and that was it, I knew. My professor said that I should seriously consider making painting my major, so I did, and I ended up going to Berkley to get my master’s degree. I really never thought I would use my degree, but I did.

Q: What led to partnering with the Evan Lurie Gallery?

A: I met Evan Lurie and his brothers back in 1994, and I gave him some paintings I had left over from college, and they sold them all in a week. That was it. I got a call a few days after and they asked if I could make a few more of these paintings right

away, and offered me a studio, a car, and the money I needed to work. They set me up with everything I needed, and I’ve been working with them ever since. I think they’ve sold a couple thousand pieces of mine over the past 21 years.

Q: What mediums do you work with?

A: I use pretty much everything as my medium. I use alcoholbased, oil-based, and acrylic all together. Whatever you’re not supposed to do, like mix oil and water, that’s the first thing I do.

I find that I get a lot more interesting effects with that kind of conflict going on between the materials.

Q: How has your work evolved over the years?

A: Over the years, my style has evolved a lot. My style reverberates, and goes back and forth between lots of things. I paint in many genres, including cowboys, pop art, collage pieces or fond objects. Any excuse to make a painting. I’ll never run out reasons to make paintings. It’s impossible.

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: Right now I’m working on different works. There’s a painting of a blue bull, another with the Statue of Liberty, and more with some gunslingers and ballerinas. I have this thing going with cowboys and ballerinas, a contrast that I’m working on.

Beginning April 9, Beef & Boards will be hosting this classic, 1920’s themed performance. Based on the book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, “The Drowsy Chaperone” blends the fun of a musical with the hilarity of a comedy.

“It’s basically a musical within a comedy,” choreographer and producer Ron Morgan said. “The show comes to life in the imagination of a musical theatre enthusiast. The music is really fun. The music is really in the 20’s sort of style and that period is so much fun to stage to and choreograph to so that’s really the appeal, I think, is the music.”

Morgan said that, for him, what separates “The Drowsy Chaperone” from other performances he’s produced are the comprehensive characters.

“I think what’s different about it is just it’s really defined characters that your working with,” he said. “It’s really over the top, defined characters in the 20’s and so it makes it actually really fun to work on because you have something more to go on. Its not just music it’s the characters and the story. The story really is those told through those production numbers because of how the show is written, so that’s why it’s more my cup of tea because as a director it comes from the production numbers and the choreography.”

NONNA’S TORTELLINI SOUP Serve: 6 Ingredients: • 8 ounces of Cremini mushrooms, sliced • 1 large onion, chopped • 6 garlic cloves, minced • 4 cups low sodium chicken broth • 1 3/4 cup water • 1 can (14-ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

• 1 stalk celery, chopped • 1 (9-ounce) package refrigerated tortellini • 1 (6-ounce) baby spinach leaves, coarsely chopped • handful fresh basil leaves • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • dash crushed red pepper flakes • shaved Grana Padano cheese, or shredded Parmesan cheese, (optional) Directions: In a large pot sauté mushroom with onions. Add garlic and cook for one minute longer. Stir in broth, water, tomatoes and celery. Bring to a boil. Add tortellini; return to a boil. Cook for 10 minutes, or until tortellini is fully cooked. Reduce heat; add spinach, basil, pepper and pepper flakes. Pour into individual bowls and garnish with cheese. Serve with slices of toasted garlic baguette.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Options to Resolve Your Case Prior to Trial In family law, a majority of cases settle outside of the courtroom.

There are many reasons to attempt to reach a settlement, including uncertainty as to the judge’s decision, anxiety about testifying in court, the potential to increase animosity between the parties, and the attorney’s fees associated with attending a hearing. It is common for a party to never step foot inside of a courtroom because the parties reach an Agreement on all terms without the requiring the court’s intervention. There are two primary methods to reach an out-of-court agreement: informal negotiations and mediation. Informal negotiations involve communication between the parties and/or their counsel concerning the terms of a final agreement. This process involves communication as to the terms of a final agreement without the assistance of a third party (a mediator or judge). In some instances, the parties may be able to reach an agreement on the general terms of an agreement and engage counsel to assist with the finalization of those terms to ensure approval by the court. In other cases, counsel for the parties will exchange proposals and draft agreements in an attempt to reach a resolution.

A recent trend in family law is for parties to engage in a collaborative divorce process. EGGnormous Egg Hunt returns this weekend

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The fields at Lions Park will come to life April 4 with the return of the Zionsville Lions Club’s annual EGGnormous Egg Hunt, which will include longtime favorite traditions and Lions Club some new ones, as well.

The morning will kick off at 9 a.m. with breakfast, which will be provided by McDondald’s for the first time.

For a donation, guests can fuel up with a breakfast burrito or other option before the main event: the egg hunt.

As in the past, the egg hunt will be staggered by age groups for children 1 to 2 years old, 3 to 4 years old, 5 to 6 years old and 7 and older. The first egg hunt will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Hidden among the colorful eggs will be several Easter-themed rubber duckies with a business name attached to it. Participants who find a rubber ducky may take it to the specified business to

claim a prize.

“You can always tell when the egg hunt is over in the park, because there’s a mad dash to town to redeem the ducks,” said Leigh Ann Akard, a member of the Lions Club and one of the event organizers.

The Easter Bunny will make his annual appearance at 9:30 a.m., which is also the start time for the EGGstreme Egg Games. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in old-fashioned, egg-themed competitions as they wait for the start of the hunt.

The Alpha Leos Club, which is comprised of students 12 to 18 years old, will also be on hand to assist and hold a bake sale. Proceeds will help fill birthday boxes for Boone County children in need.

The EGGnormous Egg Hunt has become a tradition for many Zionsville families through the years and serves as a way to kick off a new year for the Lions Club.

“The lions are excited because this is our first event of five events through the year,” Akard said. “This is the way we kick off opening up the park.”

Ingredients: 12 eggs. 4 slices bacon. 1/2 cup mayonnaise. 1/4 cup minced red onion. 2 teaspoons white sugar.

1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar. 1/4 teaspoon celery salt. 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley.

Directions: Place the eggs in a large pot in a single layer and fill with water to cover by 1 inch.

Cover the saucepan and bring the water to a boil; immediately remove from the heat and let the eggs stand in the hot water Bacon-Balsamic Deviled Eggs for 15 minutes. Drain.

Separate the yolks from the whites, placing the yolks in a bowl; arrange the egg whites with the rounded side down onto a serving platter. Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate; chop.

Mash the yolks with a fork. Add the bacon, mayonnaise, onion, sugar, vinegar, celery salt, and pepper; stir until thoroughly combined. Spoon the mixture into the egg whites. Garnish with parsley. Recipe makes 24 deviled eggs.

I’m sure most of you are pretty tired of the “alphabet soup” coming from the government about health care: PPACA, Patient care ACA, HIP 2.0 and the like.

I have one more for you: ACO, also known as Accountable Care Organization. Simply put, an ACO works toward the socalled triple aim: • Better care for patients • Better health for our community • Lower total cost of care.

Several local health care organizations, including Riverview Health, have recently become part of an ACO to better serve those who are 65 and older and are covered by traditional Medicare.

For most people, the impact will be minimal.

You’ll still be able to see your own physician.

You’ll still be entitled to all of your Medicare benefits. February home prices rise Commentary by Jim Litten With 2,036 pended sales in February in Central Indiana, overall year-to-date home sales are up 8.3 percent compared to real estate this time period last year, according to statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company.

On a monthly basis, February 2015 pended home sales rose 2.7 percent compared to February 2014, an increase of 53 homes sold in the nine counties that F.C. Tucker tracks. Six of the nine counties reported increased sales compared to February 2014. However, in Boone County sales last month tumbled 8.1 percent to 68 homes sold.

• In Zionsville, home sales declined. Last month, 32 homes pended, a decrease of 12 homes compared to February 2014.

• Homebuyers in Zionsville have more options. In February 2015, 178 homes were available for sale, an uptick of 9.9 percent from February 2014.

• Home prices in Zionsville continue to make gains. For the first two months of this year,

home prices averaged $382,112, an increase of 1.1 percent compared to the same time period last year.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, five were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 14 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; nine were priced $200,000 to 299,999; and four were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

• Inventory is selling at a slower pace. In Zionsville, homes remain on the market an average of 96 days, nine days longer than the same time period last year.

We’re excited to see the first quarter moving in a positive direction. As we head toward the spring selling months, we’re optimistic that modest sales gains will continue across most of Central Indiana.

Until the official transfer date, everything in the store is marked half price. Phillip Owens said that will allow Haug to bring in his own inventory.

Haug plans to update the bridal selection.

“That will be one of the bigger focuses,” he said.

He also expects to bring in a couple of new brands, and with his background in watches, will probably expand that area. But overall Haug appreciates what currently exists at the store.

“I want to keep a lot of the flair of what is already there,” he said.

Coming back to Main Street is something that Haug is eager to do.

“It’s a fun little town, nice people, good people,” he said. “They fill the streets on a Saturday morning. They shop local.”

They retirement will be selling the company to David Haug, who has worked for many luxury jewelry brands as well as Hofmeister Personal Jewelers and Midwest Estate Jewelers and Buyers.

Phillip Owens emphasized that he and not Jewel Box Jewelers is retiring.

“I appreciate my customers’ loyalty over the years,” he said. “Under the new ownership of David Haug, Jewel Box Jewelers will continue to serve its customers with the same level of care and quality that it has for all of these years.”

Owens said that the location and staff will remain the same. He has been at the current location since 1984 in a building that previously housed Southside Market, several restaurants and a floor covering company. The second floor that the Owens’ converted to a living space once housed a dentist office. It will soon become a law office.

Haug will take over on May 1 after a quiet final day for the Owens.

“We’ll miss our customers,” Regina Owens said. “We’ve formed friendships.”

Phillip Owens, who has seen a transformation of Main Street over the years, will miss seeing the next phase of changes. But he’s ready for retirement.

“I’m not going to do anything for at least six months,” he said.

The couple still owns the building and will make themselves available to their customers through the new owners if necessary. But Phillip Owens is confident that the new ownership will

‘Marinate’ and ‘marinade’ Commentary by Jordan Fischer QUESTION: “Dear Grammar Guy, is there a difference between ‘marinate’ and ‘marinade?’ I was flipping through a grammar guy cook book the other day and the author seemed to be a real stickler for those two words. It made me wonder. Thanks for responding!”

ANSWER: As grilling season will be fast upon us, this seems like a perfect time to jump into this one. Let’s get to it!

The big difference here is that “marinade” is a noun, while “marinate” is a verb.

A “marinade” is a sauce “in which meat or fish is soaked to add flavor” or to make more tender.

For some reason the dictionary discriminates against veggie-lovers here, but I don’t: go ahead and drop whatever you like into a marinade, vegetarian readers. I’m personally fond of dropping some bell peppers, onions and tomatoes into a

nice lemony marinade for kabobs.

Now I’m hungry … but, back to grammar!

To “marinate” is to put your meat or veggies of choice into the sauce. It’s as simple as that, really.

Now, before I draw the wrath of the culinary community upon me, there is a word used in the kitchen for soaking non-protein items in liquid – “mascerate.”

It’s used primarily to mean softening fruit by steeping in a liquid. “Marinate” and “marinade” are perfectly acceptable for the rest of us, though.

That’s it! Now that our grammar question is settled, on to more gastronomic pursuits: grilling season is almost here!

Surprising to many Christians, the Bible never mentions a “Garden of Gethsemane.” The Gospels of Mark and Matthew report that Jesus shared a Passover meal with his disciples before going to “Gethsemane,” a corruption of Hebrew words literally meaning “wine press for oils,” where he prayed and was then betrayed by Judas. The Gospel of John says Jesus prayed with his disciples the night before Passover and was later betrayed by Judas in an unnamed “garden.”

From these accounts, some Christians concluded that Gethsemane was a garden, while others concluded Jesus prayed at the site of a wine press and then went to a garden.

Since the fourth century, Christians have identified multiple locations near the foot of the Mount of Olives matching their own conceptions of Gethsemane. The most popular site is a walled garden across the Kidron Valley from the Temple Mount. It includes flower-lined paths and eight olive trees carbon-dated to the time of the Crusaders, making them the oldest such trees on earth. The adjoining Church of All Nations, built in the 1920s on the site of earlier churches, is

claimed to cover the stone on which Jesus knelt while he prayed. At least three other locations on the Mount of Olives, including a cave said to have housed an ancient wine press, are also associated with the Biblical accounts of Jesus’ agony in Gethsemane. The traditional choices for Gethsemane are all near major first century roads crossing the Mount of Olives. Some scholars believe a secluded location north and east of traditional locations would be a more likely spot for someone seeking to pray.

For Christian visitors to Jerusalem, whether the traditional sites of Gethsemane are precisely the place of Jesus’s agony is irrelevant. Being in the vicinity of where Jesus prayed on the night before his crucifixion is close enough.

Creating an open, contemporary concept kitchen Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING KITCHEN: Located in the Springmill Streams subdivision in Carmel, this 20-year-old kitchen had a choppy blueprint for layout that didn’t work improvement for the homeowners.

A large walk-in pantry monopolized too much space and divided the kitchen from the formal dining room. The homeowners’ dream was to create an open-concept layout for better flow and modernize the design for a more contemporary look.

REMOVING PANTRY: To create the desired open layout, the pantry and walls separating the kitchen from the dining room were eliminated.

As a result, the space now feels spacious and bright. In place of the pantry, a new desk was installed using maple cabinetry with a “Coco” finish. A Cambria “Torquay” countertop was chosen to contrast with the dark cabinetry.

TIEING IN DINING AREA: To compensate for lost storage from the terminated pantry, new contrasting cabinets with a “Polar” finish and a Cambria “Wellington” countertop were installed along the far dining room wall to store rarely used china and kitchen accessories. The new pantry wall also functions as a buffet for formal dinner parties.

MODERN DETAILS: The existing layout of the kitchen worked well; it simply needed to be modernized. The same two-toned cabinetry and

Cambria countertops from the desk and dining area were used for the kitchen perimeter wall and island for consistency. A separate beverage station was added to keep traffic out of the main prep area. The sleek stainless steel appliances and glass tile backsplash polish off the desired contemporary look.

CONNECTING KITCHEN WITH DINING ROOM: LED recessed can lights, under cabinet lighting and new pendants installed on dimmer switches adds visual interest and helps connect the two spaces. New hardwood flooring was installed throughout the main level to create a continuous look.
