Gov. gives Eagle students a civics lesson by signing law

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Students at Eagle Elementary were able to see firsthand the final step of a bill becoming a law on March 22 when Gov. Mike education Pence signed House Enrolled Act 1395, which will eliminate the ISTEP test in June 2017.

“Literally today you’re going to witness law being made,” said Pence in front of more than 400 students and faculty.

After the assembly Pence shook hands with many of the students and allowed them to hold and read the bill he had just signed.

“I’m excited to be here to sign into law a bill that will make a very significant change in the state of Indiana,” Pence said.

With the No Child Left Behind law repealed at the national level, Pence said that Indiana was

able to take a step back from ISTEP and consider other options.

“This is the beginning of a new day of testing in the state of Indiana,” he said.

When he announced that the test would be eliminated, he was met with cheers from some students.

“That’s the good news for you,” Pence said.

“The bad news is we’re going to keep testing.”

Pence said that a 23-person panel will be created to study other testing options with appointments being made in May. “There’s a growing sense that we can do better than ISTEP,” he said.

He added that he couldn’t resist the opportunity to teach a lesson in civics, which is why he felt it important to sign the bill among students at the four-star school.

The Zionsville Plan Commission voted 6-1 to replat three parcels of land in the Village despite many neighbors expressdevelopment ing concerns at the March 21 meeting.

David Berman, represented by attorney Mike Andreoli, petitioned for the replat of three parcels at 425 S. 6th St. to be reconfigured into three lots. The replat allows for the construction of two new single-family homes on two of the lots as well as refurbishment of the current buildings on the third lot.

Residents expressed several concerns about adding two new homes to the area, including worries that they would exacerbate drainage issues, increase traffic and cause safety concerns because of an incline that creates sightline issues.

The petitioner said he would address some of the drainage issues that could be caused by the building of additional properties. As for other concerns, commissioner Jay Parks said that they would still remain regardless of the decision of the commission and that the commitments of the petitioner would solve more problems than it would cause.

“The traffic issues that everybody talks about will not be solved tonight by either way we vote,” Parks said. “The egregious violation of stop signs by both automobiles and bicyclists will continue. The problem of the sightlines will be continued as long as there is that hill there.

Drainage will be a problem if in fact we don’t approve this, and the drainage commitments that would be made would be built into any commitments that we would approve as part of this.”

Many other items on the agenda were continued to next month’s meeting, which is planned for April 18.

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. is inviting residents to “Pull for Parks” in April to help keep the invasive environment garlic mustard plant from overtaking other plants.

For the past several years, the department has organized workdays for church, Scouts, business and other groups to remove the plant from the ground, Murdock but this year individuals are invited to help out as well.

“Unfortunately, we do have some invasive species of plants in our parks. We try to manage the best we can,” said Mindy Murdock, Zionsville park naturalist and manager. “We often have maintenance companies that will come out and spray, but we’re looking for ways to get the community involved.”

Murdock will notify volunteers to schedule a pull when weather conditions are favorable.

“We’ll send out an email to all those individuals and have them meet us at a certain park,” Murdock said.

Student donates book proceeds

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Victoria Martine had no idea what she would do with the proceeds of her children’s book, so she decided to Achievement put it to good use.

As a Zionsville West Middle School sixth grader, Martine wrote a 24-page book called “The 100 Dollar Sock.”

“I published the book about something that happened in our lives,” said Martine Martine, now a Zionsville Community High School junior. “I decided I would donate the proceeds to an orphanage in Guatemala. When I had donated my toys and clothes and items like that there, I always felt a really good feeling. So I thought I would with a monetary donation as well.”

Martine has raised a total of $2,100 in the past five years from book sales, and she makes a yearly donation.

Martine, 17, was presented with an engraved bronze medallion to recognize her selection as a Distinguished Finalist for Indiana in the 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards during a March 14 ceremony at ZCHS. “It’s basically a signal that I’m doing the right thing,” Martine said. “I’m giving back to

The book is about a washer repair that cost a $100 because of a stuck sock.

“The repair charges them a very large amount for a small thing, which was the sock,” said Martine, who based the story on something that happened with her family.

Martine sells her books when visiting schools, libraries and elsewhere.

“I go to the elementary schools and talk to the first graders there, because they are doing their own writing of short stories,” Martine said.

ZMS jazz group wins festival

news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Middle School Jazz Ensemble, comprised of 34 students in sixth through eighth grade, achievement recently earned first place at The Ball State Jazz Festival. The group competed against area middle and high school jazz bands.

“We try our best to teach the kids to perform well and we don’t worry much about the competitive aspect to it, but when we are placed into a situation like this where we outscore middle and high school jazz bands, some of which meet as a class every day in school, it shows what a special group of kids we get to work with at ZMS,” said Josh Weirich, ZMS band director.

The annual Dimensions in Jazz Festival hosted middle and high school bands from around the region for a day of competition and instructional clinics with professional musicians and educators. The day concluded with an evening concert that featured the winning bands from two of the three rooms and Ball State’s top jazz ensemble with featured guest soloist and trombone player, composer, and band leader John Fedchock.

“The end of each year is always the most bittersweet for us—we’re proud of our kids’ accomplishments, but we just don’t know how the next year will be able to top it,” said Chris Murray, ZMS band director. “If there’s one thing that we’re really proud of, though, it’s that these kids have created a culture of leaders who step up each and every time.”

Pogo made life easier Commentary by Ward Degler Walt Kelly has long been one of my heroes.

It was his genius that created Pogo the Possum, arguably one of the wisest, most sage creatures to ever pole a plain talk pirogue through the Okefenokee swamp.

It was Pogo and his pals who lovingly left comic page readers questioning their own sanity each week with such indisputable statements as, “We has met the enemy, and it is us.”

Politics was always fair game and election years found Kelly gently mocking candidates with such statements as, “We had the New Deal and the Fair Deal. Now we offers twice as much as the other fellow offers you … we is going to give you The Double Deal.”

As an aside to this bombast, Pogo muttered, “Now is the time for men to come to.”

To which his pal Albert Alligator, who had been fishing all day and had caught nothing added, “Food for thought is no substitute for the real thing.”

Commenting on yet another political situation that had the media in a tizzy, Pogo advised, “Don’t believe something just because you didn’t read it in the papers. Wait until you haven’t seen it on television.”

Deep in a philosophical discussion about life, Pogo proclaimed, “Don’t take life so serious – it ain’t nohow permanent.” To which another member of the cast replied, “There’s no easy quick way out, we’re going to have to live

through our whole lives, win, lose or draw.”

One of the characters was a puppy everyone called Pup Dog. Miz Beaver stopped everyone in their tracks one day, however, by saying his name was really Ralph Birch. When asked why, she took a puff on her corncob pipe and said, “cause thems the only barks he knows by heart.” And there was Pup Dog in the background barking, “Ralph, Ralph, Ralph.

Birch, Birch.”

Sometimes the mood was plain old garden variety silliness. Like the hollering contest they launched periodically. Everybody put forth their best holler and Albert was feeling pretty good about his entry. Then Li’l Rackety Coon Chile let loose with a holler that put the whole swamp into shock.

It is notable that a real life hollering contest emerged in 1969 at the crossroads of Spivey’s Corner, N.C. The contest is held on the third Sunday in June, and proceeds go to the Spivey’s Corner Volunteer Fire Dept.

It’s not known if the contest was prompted by the Okefenokee event. A lot of people thought so at the time.

Kelly died in 1973 at the age of 60 after a long battle with diabetes. After one of his legs had to be amputated, he commented, “I’ll just have to wait till it grows back.””

Boone Co. firefighters partner for training Firefighters from Zionsville, Whitestown and Lebanon participated in joint training exercises during the evening hours of March 21 to 23 at the Boone Co. Firefighter Training Facility. The exercises took place during the evening in a live-fire and low-light environment, which restricts visibility and movement. The exercises involve simulating the rescue of a firefighter who has fallen through a floor and into a basement. The departments have adopted the same operational policies for this and other types of events, which allow for smooth operations involving personnel from multiple departments. Spencer Miller is, in many ways, a modern embodiment of “The Little Engine That Could.”

Noticeably lean and on the profile shorter side, it’s not until Miller climbs onto his competitionready bike that the distinction becomes clear.

Well, as clear as anything can get when he’s leaving entire pack, more experienced cyclists in his dust on the mountains of Tucson.

“A year ago, I never thought I’d be out here,” said Miller, 17.

Miller, a Zionsville resident who recently had a strong finish in the Valley of the Sun race event, began his journey as a cyclist when he met Matt Tanner, founder of Rollfast, a local nonprofit cycling club in 2013.

“I wasn’t very promising or fast on the bike, but Matt took me in,” Miller said. “He didn’t bring me onto the team because I was a good rider, but he brought me onto the team to supply me with the tools to get better every day.”

Miller’s biggest break yet came while attending the Cinch Cycling Camp in Tucson.

Founder Tom Danielson took note of Miller and asked him to continue training.

“Coming into camp, I thought of him as just another camper,” Danielson said. “After a

few days, all of a sudden I could see he had this big barrel chest, long legs, small body. He looked like a super climber.”

Danielson has Miller training heavily for climbing and stage racing events, much of which involves hilly or mountainous terrain found in Nevada. It’s still a long road to traverse for Miller, but it says something when seasoned professionals like Danielson and Tanner admit the young man could make it to various major competitions one day, including the Tour de France.

“It’s really just surreal,” Miller said.

Whitestown race to honor memory of late ZCHS grad, organ donor

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Bryan Langford will be the first to tell you his son, Justin, had a fabulous life. It was just way too short.

The 2009 Zionsville Community High School graduate died in a vehicle accident in Arizona in 2014. cover story “He packed more in his 23 years than most people do in 100,” Bryan said. “We were very blessed and thankful for each day we had with him.

We want to inspire others. He was always smiling, and he had a contagious laugh. He couldn’t stand to see people sad. We knew he wouldn’t want us here continually mourning. No, go make a difference and do something good.”

Bryan and his wife, Janice, have started Justin’s Run 4 Hope, set for May 14 in Whitestown. The run is on the two-year anniversary of the accident. He died three days later.

“The overall theme is giving hope,” Bryan said. “Organ donation is one of the primary means where we are trying to raise awareness. The proceeds from the race will go STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholarships that are in Justin’s name here in Zionsville and Vanderbilt.”

Last year two ZCHS seniors received two $1,000 Justin David Langford Memorial scholarships.

Justin, a Vanderbilt graduate in mechanical engineering, was a summer intern for three years at Allison Transmission in Indianapolis and had been working full-time as a calibration engineer for Allison for just more than one year.

He was working in the hills of Flagstaff, Ariz., when the flatbed utility truck he was driving flipped. Justin died three days later.

Justin’s brother, Kyle, a 2013 ZCHS graduate, is a junior at Vanderbilt. The biomedical engineering major wants to be a doctor.

Bryan, Janice, Kyle and Justin’s girlfriend, Kelsi Buckley, plan to compete in the 4-mile run. Janice said Justin had an engagement ring for Kelsi, a ZCHS graduate, and planned to pop the question later in the summer.

“I am looking forward to seeing all of our friends and family come together to celebrate Justin’s life and enjoy the day together as well as raise awareness for the incredible act of organ donation,” said Kelsi, a registered dietician in San Antonio.

Kelsi said a run is a fitting tribute to Justin, who she described as health-oriented and an avid runner at times.

“He found every possible reason to celebrate and this is as great of a reason as any,” Kelsi said. “Although his version of

celebrating usually involved chocolate and ice-cream. I will definitely be enjoying a postrace ice cream cone in his honor.”

Kelsi’s parents, who live in Carmel, and her younger brother, Garrick, also plan to run.

Gift of life

For Justin, being an organ donor seemed to be the right thing to do from the start.

“Justin was the first one in our family to suggest it when he was 16 and getting his driver’s license,” Janice said. “He made sure we were OK with it.”

Justin’s heart, lungs, both kidneys, both corneas, liver and pancreas, along with tissue and bones were all donated.

“Justin’s right kidney has given complete life to a 2-year-old,” Bryan said.

“More than 25 people received his organs and either have life or have life extended.”

Fernando Zazueta’s heart was working at 10 percent of full capacity when he received Justin’s heart at age 51.

Zazueta later wrote a letter to the Langfords: “I deeply appreciate receiving this transplant. It would mean the world to me if your family would approve to meet me. I want you to see this heart has brought back life, hope and happiness to an old man who had lost hope and given up on himself.”

The Langfords took a quilt square, representing Justin’s life, to a Donor Network of Arizona annual event in mid-March and were able to meet Zazueta.

“A lot of people have misconceptions of organ donations, thinking, ‘I’m too old or I’m too young or I’m too sick,’” Bryan said. “Register, and they’ll decide if they can use organs or not.”

Run 4 hope The race starts at 9 a.m. May 14 in Whitestown. HopeFest will be held at the Langfords’ church, New Hope Christian Church, 5780 S. Main St., Whitestown. In conjunction with the race, there will be a health and wellness fair, along with information on organ donation, relational and spiritual strength and STEM education.

There is four-mile run/walk, a one-mile walk and a children’s quarter-mile run. Prices increase April 18. All proceeds go to scholarships in Justin’s name at ZCHS and Vanderbilt.

‘Trump Sisters’ mean business

You might have heard about Diamond and Silk, former Democrats that have wholeheartedly jumped aboard the “Trump Train.” Theirs is no gimmicky play, either. The African-American sisters hailing from Fayetteville, N.C., have a series of online videos for your viewing consumption and consideration (the link for one such production, this one a Fox interview from last week, is https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=_PT3cQ0rTx4). When you sense the zeal with which they speak, it’s not a fabrication, no puff, no comedy. They are as passionate about getting off “the Democrat Plantation” as they are standing tall – and maybe a tad loud - for the Republican billionaire candidate for president. They take shots at the Clintons, much of it rooted in the past.

There is, to say the least, an element of fun in their delivery, but it’s also highly thought provoking. On www.diamondandsilkinc.com, you will find a Ditch and Switch page, which states, among other things, this: “DITCH the Democrat Party and SWITCH to Republican Party to vote for Mr. Donald J. Trump in the primaries. Look below to see if your state is a Closed or Open primary voting state.” They have become bona fide political activists, and, yes, they are gut-level serious in their delivery. Listen to their message and see if, to you, it is as rooted in good sense as it is to us. Granted, they are imploring folks to get out and vote for their candidate, but voting for anyone is better than not voting at all. As we’ve stated previously, voting is a right and a responsibility, and it needs to be accorded the seriousness it deserves … yes, even if Diamond and Silk make you chuckle. The message is clear.

In his 1959 memoir, “Groucho and Me,” famed comedian and commentator Groucho Marx defended his desire to resign from a prominent Hollywood social club: Please accept my resignation. I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.

Entertainment industry reporters first attributed the quote to Marx in a rift with the famed Friar’s Club. Then for decades, Marx and his children both confirmed and denied how and to whom Marx directed his ire (perhaps to protect the guilty as much as the innocent).

We humans don’t like to be excluded from the club. It doesn’t really matter what the club does or what benefits it might offer – if there is a door, and we are on the wrong side of it our collective blood pressure rises. Airports, vineyards, swimming pools and men’s razor companies have all exploited our need to be “in” when designing their marketing effort. A shaving “club” must be better than

buying a razor the old way… right? There must be some special benefit – it is a “club” after all. And, airlines have their own strategy. For $50 or so per flight, per day, we can access the storied halls of wealth and power. We can enter the sleek gated doors to find our own place in sanctum sanctorum.

While enduring a five-hour layover in sunny Houston airport, a travel partner granted me passage behind the velvet rope. Hosanna! What did I find? Very little. Stale coffee, low quality liquor, dried-out cheese cubes and heavy crowds. The only real advantage may have been to enjoy the longing eyes of the plebeian masses as I exited back to the airport hall to find a working bathroom.

Maybe Marx was right. Once you peek behind the gilded door, the magic is gone.

My newly-minted 12-year-old and I were texting back and forth a few days ago about the homework she humor supposedly slid under my door after I’d gone to bed. I, of course, failed to see it (or even step on it) and therefore, was of absolutely no help to her. Eventually she typed, “It’s Gucci. I’ll just ask my teacher.” Confused at her word choice and somewhat miffed that she included not one, but two, crying emoji’s, I randomly asked a couple of students who were just walking into my classroom, “Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘It’s Gucci?’” They surprised me with ear-to-ear grins, like “Wow! Our old fart of a teacher might finally be catching on!”

Turns out, “It’s Gucci” means everything is fine, although I’m sure my daughter did not merely wish to inform me she no longer needed assistance. I sensed a definite if-you-were-a-stay-at-home-mom-youwouldn’t-ignore-me vibe.

Anyhoo, the following morning, having slept terribly, I announced to a group of juniors, “I am really riding the struggle bus today!” I had learned this euphemism last year in the halls and so sought to not only relay my fatigue but also connect on their level.

“Um, Mrs. Wilson? We don’t really say that anymore.” Argh! There goes my street cred. I simply can’t get it right. When I don’t understand I seem stupid, and on the rare occasion when I do, I still seem stupid. It’s a catch-22, like the swearing crisis I experienced in 2003. If I dropped the F-bomb in front of my 3-year-old after an unfortunate potty-training incident, I risked receiving a call from Sister Mary Jo at PRE. If I didn’t, if I somehow miraculously refrained from releasing the cussword Kraken as I Silkwooded the entire bathroom, I’d go insane from bottled-up frustration.

The point is, that despite having kids at home and teaching high schoolers, I can no longer keep up with today’s youth speak. Alas, I must accept and use the language I know and love, and not worry about impressing teenagers. If they think I’m weird, so what? It’s Gucci.

REA D ER ’ S VIE W A bit of irony; roads vs. new town hall Editor, A bit of irony in reading the (March 15 edition off) Current.

Page 2 had an article reporting on a study of the condition of our roads carried out by a consultant for the town of Zionsville. They noted 40% or more of our roads are in “poor” condition or worse. If recommended repairs or repaving were undertaken immediately, the cost was estimated to be $20 million. The Zionsville Street Department evidently earmarked approximately $1 million for this year toward road repairs.

A couple of pages deeper into the paper was a report about the Town Council approving the construction of a 40,000 square foot new town hall at a cost of over $10 million (to be borrowed), over near unanimous publicly voiced opposition based on concerns over the need for a new hall, the size/scope of the project, the cost, the borrowing etc.

To his credit, Mr. Schuler voted against it, and in fairness Ms. Hopper was not present. All others voted for the expenditure.

I understand it is not as simple as it sounds, but it just seemed ironic that we have a street repair budget that is seemingly woefully underfunded, yet the Council approves a plan and finds the future funds to build a new town hall over very strong constituent opposition.

Ironic or not, the current political climate may give voters pause when examining this expenditure.

The nurse reviewed the stats: “Blood pressure, 123 over 80; height 5’ 8” and weight 170. Very good, Mr. Wolfsie. Please step over here and…”

“Whoa! How tall did you say I was?”

“That would be 5 feet, 8 inches—in your socks, which adds a little, of course.”

That night when I got home, I asked my wife how tall she thought I was. “Well, let’s see, when I’m in heels, I’m taller than you, and I’m 5’ 7,” so I guess I’d say you are 5’ 8.” And you’re just about as adorable as can be.”

“But when we got married, I told you I was 5’ 10.” You should have said something.”

“I figured you just rounded it up from 5’ 7.” You did the same thing with your math SATs. By the way, I also didn’t believe that 170 number you threw at me — not by a long shot.

“You think I lied about my weight?”

“Oh, I thought that was your IQ you were bragging about.”

The bottom line is I have to admit either I’m a pathological liar and need some expensive counseling or I am — and this is tough to admit — shrinking. It’s going to depend on which one is covered by Medicare.

Most people stop growing in their late teens or early 20s. I was stunned the other day to learn that President Obama’s annual physical indicated he had humor grown over an inch since taking office. His doctor said there was no explanation for this. The Democrats said it was Obamacare.

Of course, seniors do not usually get taller. Just the opposite. One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons is an elderly woman tracking her husband’s height with pencil marks on the inside of a closet door, just like our parents did when we were kids. Sadly, the lines on the door suggest the man had gradually been getting shorter.

Recently I went for a medical procedure that required a brain scan. A nurse called the next day to say that after examining my head for 15 minutes, they were pleased to report they didn’t find anything. I guess this was good news, but they need to find a better way of presenting that information.

While I was there, I was also weighed and had my height measured. Now, my father was six feet tall and my mother was barely five, so I always calculated I was right in the middle, at 5’ 10.” (You can see now why I didn’t do well in math.) For almost 55 years, on my driver’s license, my passport and all medical questionnaires, I listed myself as 5’ 10.” It not only made me feel tall, but it made me seem trim according to the weight chart. If I gained a few pounds, I just told myself I was taller. I

Rock the Cradle to return for third year

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Expecting and new parents will have a chance to celebrate 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 14 at the Ritz Charles in Carmel.

Rock the Cradle will return for its third annual family fun complimentary event with shopping, contests, a fashion show and more to those with new little ones or babies on the way.

Jenn Kampmeier, founder of the event, said there will be approximately 70 vendors at the event.

“It’s basically our mission to empower parents on fitness, nutrition and wellness and then while shopping and celebrating in a whimsical atmosphere,” she said.

Although entry is complimentary, there will be charges at the various vendors and food trucks at the event. Some vendors include diaper and stroller companies, national and local companies, as well as booths on health and wellness.

Contests include the daddy-a-thon, where dads and partners of expecting and new moms will compete in an obstacle course. The dads or partners must perform certain skills and whoever wins receives a prize valued more than $400. Previous winners in years past have been awarded car seats or strollers.

SFJAZZ brings ‘Michael Jackson’ to Carmel

By Jay Harvey • news@currentinwestfield.com Founded in 2004 by saxophonist Joshua Redman in San Francisco, the SFJAZZ Collective has honored a series of jazz giants with new arrangements of their compositions, preserved on CD music and shared with national audiences through touring.

The pattern was broken in 2011 and 2012, with recordings and a tour focusing on Stevie Wonder. The artistic direction of the group thus branched out into pop music, showing there was a legitimate jazz approach to such songs as “Sir Duke” and “Superstition.” The octet brought that show to the Center for the Performing Arts, proving its point definitively.

A further departure from a purist concentration brings the band back to the Palladium April 8, the night after a concert at Purdue’s Loeb Playhouse. This time, the ensemble features its arrangements of songs by Gary native Michael Jackson. Notes: A pinch of baking soda is a good trick for cooking broccoli; it raises the pH softening vegetable fiber so simmering time is much shorter.

Serves: 6 Ingredients: 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, 1 medium onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup), 4 medium stalks celery, finely diced (about 1 cup), 2 medium cloves garlic, minced, 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 2 cups milk, 2 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken stock, plus more if necessary, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 12 cups broccoli florets, stems, and stalks cut into 1-inch pieces, 3 ounces Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, salt and freshly ground black pepper, croutons Directions: Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a soup pot over medium-high heat.

Carmel’s own Becca Peterson took “Where’s Amy?” on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the set of “Newsies” … and yes, those newspapers are not made of paper they are ceramic props.

I had an exclusive “Newsies” behind the scenes photo session for Current with Carmel native Becca Peterson and a few of her amazing Broadway cast members. Peterson said it was an honor to come back home to perform instead of being in the audience. She said that the performances are demanding and intense but worth every minute when cheers from delighted audiences fill the air. Yep, Disney’s “Newsies” Broadway smash hit musical was sold out on opening night, and the excited audience cheered as the cast danced, leaped and sang the night away. I even learned a few newspaper tricks back stage from “Newsies” Sky Flaherty, Iain Young and Michael Damaski.

Lounge offers adults an escape

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Those 21 and older living on Indy’s north side or in Hamilton Co. now have a closer refuge than the bar lounges cocktails placed downtown.

The Idyll Lounge, at 8487 Union Chapel Rd., opened about three weeks ago. Natalie Nierman, general manager, said the lounge is ideal for those finishing dinner and wanting to stay out a little longer.

Although food is sold at the bar, there are only eight small plates including surf and turf, guacamole, lobster rolls and more.

“It’s a high end cocktail lounge. We felt like the north side of Indianapolis needed something like this because they really don’t have it,” Nierman said. “We’re focused on having a really great guest experience. In other words, our staff is going to treat our customers with the utmost respect. We just feel that customer service has gone away in the last handful of years.”

The Idyll Lounge offers patio seating, as well as large garage doors that open when the weather allows to encourage fresh air inside the bar. There is no smoking.

The Idyll Lounge encourages private parties, and multiple have been held at the bar since it has opened.

“It’s the perfect place for after dinner drinks,” Nierman said. “We have great music, live music and a DJ on some nights.”

An acoustic musician will begin performing at 8 p.m. each Thursday beginning in April. The bar is open Monday through Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Digging through a silver sandbox

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com On a table in Midwest Jewelers and Estate Buyers are three big bins filled with clear plastic bags of earrings, pendants, jewelry bracelets, rings, necklaces and more.

The sign on one bin reads “Previously Loved Silver Bargains.”

“We call it the adult sandbox,” store manager Anna Foley said.

The bins are filled with sterling silver items priced by weight ranging on average from $5 to $25, with some pieces as high as $80.

Several years ago such items were put aside in the storage room to sell to a dealer. Then two years ago sales associate Karen Edney had the idea to sell the silver jewelry to their customers instead.

She started with a small box and now three large bins cover a coffee table surrounded by comfortable chairs.

Not all of the silver is previously loved; some is unworn sold by individuals or purchased by stores or jewelers who close a line of jewelry.

Foley said some people will come for hours to sort through all of the treasures, in search of a fun piece or a bargain.

“It’s brilliant,” Foley said. “It’s fun.”

“Sixty percent of what we have in the store is previously loved,” she said. “It’s obviously reflected in the price when we buy it.”

store has been open for 20 years and is undergoing an expansion. A separate area primarily for watches, the Watchatorium, is being added along with a new office for estate buying. A custom built aquarium will separate the watches from the jewelry in the store.

The official opening for the expansion is scheduled for April 23, but customers are invited to sit and dig for special silver items Monday through Saturday.

Pool adds membership options

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com There are more ways to try Azionaqua this year. azionaqua The board of the Zionsville pool has added membership levels and options to encourage new members and make it easier for residents to try the pool.

“We basically started by doing a survey to our members at the end of last year, not only for those that were planning on staying but for those who said they weren’t going to continue,” board member Dan Ribolzi said. “We used that to determine what were the reasons people liked the pool.”

A trial membership has been added to allow families to spend the summer at the pool without paying the initiation fee.

“If you decide to stay that next spring, the initiation fee would be due at that time,” Ribolzi said.

“We’re in a position where we’re trying to

grow our member base,” he said.

Ribolzi said to combat losing families of teens, whose children may want to spend the summer with friends who aren’t members of Azionaqua, they have added a plus-two membership level similar to what other pools and The Children’s Museum offer.

“That way if my kids want to bring a friend or two, it’s built into that,” Ribolzi said.

Different levels of membership – offering a discount for two-year, three-year and lifetime members – are also new this year.

A new liner was added to the pool in the fall, and Ribolzi expects that will help with the pool temperature. The pool opens May 27 for a Summer Kick-Off Fundraiser Party that is open to the public with a discounted admission fee for members.

Ribolzi is eager to see how the new changes impact membership.

“People are emotionally connected to the pool, and they associate it to their summer,” he said. “It’s a special place.”

Homes sales down 3.5 percent Commentary by Jim Litten Pended home sales are gaining momentum in Central Indiana. Although February 2016’s data shows pended sales were real estate down 3.5 percent compared to this time last year, January 2016 sales had been down 9.5 percent.

Available inventory continues to tighten across the region, while average sales prices grew modestly by 2.7 percent, now at $171,932.

In Boone County, the average sale price climbed 6 percent to $270,681. Two additional homes were for sale in February compared to last year, bringing the total to 359 homes. However, pended sales in Boone County dipped 10.5 percent.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sale price increased 6.2 percent compared to this time last year, now at $416,993.

• Inventory moved at a slightly slower pace in Zionsville in February 2016. Overall, homes sold in 106 days – 19 more

days than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had more options available to them. Last month, 189 homes were available for sale – an increase of 11 homes compared to February 2015.

• Pended home sales stayed flat in Zionsville. A total of 38 homes pended.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, eight were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 16 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; 11 were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and three were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

The spring buying season will heat up the market, but the low level of inventory will keep demand in check. As this trend continues, it’s more apparent average sale prices will only continue to rise.

Blueprint for Improvement: Brighter kitchen, bigger dining Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background info: These homeowners recently relocated to this 21-year-old home in the Queens Manor neighborhood from their California home.

They knew they wanted to do some updating, while still matching the classic structure and wood trim throughout the home.

1. The existing perimeter cabinets were painted white, and the hood was replaced, updating the look.

2. Removing the large bulkhead above the island allowed a more open feel and the installation of pendant lights.

3. The new dining room addition mirrors an extended bay on the other side of the home seamlessly.

4. The large, custom windows bring so much light into the space, which extends into the adjacent sitting area.

5. New white, custom built-in shelving and an update to the stone fireplace create a cozy, inviting feel.

6. The space was completed with accent cove lighting, and custom glass cabinet inserts.

For a combined kitchen/dining/living space, it was definitely too small. It was not a pleasant space to spend time in or entertain guests.

Divorce - What to Expect: Making a Workable Custodial and Parenting Time Arrangement Child Custody is actually two separate concepts; legal and physical custody of the children have different definitions and applications. Legal custody refers to the authority to make decisions on ongoing medical, educational, and religious issues surrounding the children. Joint legal custody allows for both parents to have input into these significant decisions and prohibits one parent from making these decisions without the consultation from the other. In cases where, the parents are able to communicate and cooperate with one another on such matters, joint legal custody is a typical agreement or order. However, if the parents are unable to discuss these discussions in a reasonable and consistent manner, the Court may issue an order awarding one parent this authority, referred to as “sole” legal custody. The legal custody order does not automatically affect the physical custody/parenting time order.

Physical custody refers to the primary residence of the children, subject to the parenting time of the other parent, which can be as much as an fifty percent or what is referred to a “shared” physical custody.

So long as a parenting time schedule is in the best interest of the children, parents may create a unique schedule which satisfies the needs of their children and each other and allows for both structure and flexibility. If the parties are unable to agree, the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines provides a minimum parenting time schedule that gradually increases from the time of a child’s birth up until the child is three (3) years of age whereby parenting time occurs every other weekend, alternating holidays, with extended periods of parenting time during summer vacation. While the Guidelines represent a minimum amount of reasonable parenting time to be afforded to the non-custodial parent, many Indiana Courts commonly award an involved, non-custodial parent parenting time in excess of the schedule provided in the Guidelines, so again, an agreement that takes into account all facets of the parents’ schedules and the children’s needs is preferable.

If you and your child’s parent do not have regular or typical work schedules, creating a schedule tailored to meet your specific needs will likely better serve your family than would the “default” schedule under the Guidelines. Should parents request court intervention to determine a parenting time schedule, parties would be well advised to keep in mind that judges will only be as knowledgeable about the details of your daily schedules based upon the evidence presented at trial as time permits.

Therefore, there are a number of benefits to reaching an out of court agreement, including but not limited to, keeping work-related child care expenses low and allowing for added flexibility for holiday traditions or family vacations. When parties are able to communicate and cooperate on these matters it is a win-win for all involved.

We recognize that such is not always possible. In the event you are unable to reach an agreement and you must litigate the issue, Indiana Courts consider a number of factors in determining an appropriate custodial and parenting time arrangement. Factors considered in determining what may be in the child’s best interest with respect to physical custody include: which parent has served as the primary caregiver; the child’s age and sex; the wishes of the child and the parties; the child’s relationship with each parent, siblings, and others; the child’s adjustment to their home, school, and community, the mental and physical health of all involved; among other various considerations.

Many things about the Great Sphinx on Egypt’s Giza Plateau remain mysterious. The truth of a popular story about its travel missing nose is not among them.

The Great Sphinx, having the head of a man and the body of a lion, is the world’s largest monolithic statue. Carved in the limestone in the quarry from which the stones of the Great Pyramids were mined, the body is 241 feet long and the top of the head is 66 feet above the floor. For thousands of years, the body was covered with desert sand, creating the image of a disembodied head sometimes mistaken for an Egyptian goddess.

Despite its size, no Egyptian records mention the Great Sphinx and archaeologists are not sure when or why it was created. One popular theory is that the Sphinx honors Pharaoh Khafra, who ruled Egypt in about 2500 B.C. and whose pyramid, the second largest in Egypt, is nearby. Supporters of this theory believe the once-painted head is that of

That same year Cayce predicted that we would learn in 1958 that the Great Pyramids were built by workers somehow able to float their enormous stones in the air.

A 15th century Arab historian reported that the nose of the Sphinx was pried off by a Sufi Muslim outraged that locals were praying to the Great Sphinx for a successful harvest. But Giza guides have long claimed that cannon balls fired by Napoleon’s soldiers shattered the nose.
