Police search for barn-assault suspect

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com An incident that led to a 911 call reporting two dead bodies in a barn March 17 turned out to be a physical public safety and sexual assault, investigators said March 20, with the victim expected to recover.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen said that the homeowner, Helen Irene Fix, 76, and her caretaker left for their daily walk around the Fix property, 1545 S US 421, at approximately 4 p.m. March 17. During the walk, an unknown male wearing a ski mask and gloves approached them, according to the victim’s statement. They believed he had a gun.

Nielsen said a physical assault on the caretaker began outside of the barn. Inside of the barn, the suspect sexually assaulted the caretaker. It was not until a relief caregiver arrived

shortly before 6 p.m. that the relief caregiver discovered Fix and the unconscious caretaker.

The relief caregiver immediately called 911.

Fix was not physically injured but did witness the incident. Due to a prior medical condition, Fix is unable to communicate with law enforcement on any specifics of the crime.

“Our investigation leads us to believe, at this time, this is not a random act of violence,” Nielsen said.

The victim, a 41-year-old Hispanic female, sustained minor injuries from a rope being placed around her neck and from being struck in the head with an unknown object.

The victim was treated and released from St. Vincent’s Hospital March 18.

Boone County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mike Beard said the suspect is described as a male who appeared on the property without knowledge of the caretaker.

The former owner of For the Dogs, a local dogday-care facility, has been charged with two counts of public update voyeurism after allegedly setting up a hidden cell phone camera inside of a first-aid kit in the bathroom to peep on an employee.

Raymond Bridges, 56, of Indianapolis turned himself in to police Bridges at 5:30 p.m. March 17, the same day a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was booked at the Boone County Jail but was released after posting bail, which was set at $5,000 surety or $550 cash.

The probable cause affidavit states that on or around Feb. 2 Bridges did “peep without the consent of (the victim) in an area where the occupant could reasonably be expected to disrobe … and knowingly or intentionally committed said offense by means of a camera.”

Zionsville police said that the penalty for the voyeurism charge ranges from six months to 2 1/2 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

ZPC delays Tom Wood vote

Plans call for a 35,193-square-foot building with an associated hard surface area for vehicle display and parking on 9.8 acres at 6408 Crane Dr. Paul Kite, who spoke on behalf of petitioner Zionswood, LLC, said the project could include removing CR E 650 S west of Abby Lane, which would require approval from Boone County commissioners. That part of the road is only used to access a telecommunications equipment center, and the dealership would provide access to the center when built. The vacated road would be filled in with grass, Kite said.

“There would be no traffic behind those neighbors,” Kite said.

pollution. Kite responded that employees will use handheld radios for communication rather than a speaker system, that the site does not fall within a floodplain and that plans call for new LED lighting technology, which is designed to limit spillover.

Commissioner Larry Jones questioned why one set of plans showed a “22-acre parking lot” on the property to the east of the proposed dealership. Kite said Zionswood also owns 18 acres to the east that are planned to be developed as another dealership in the future.

With the planning department’s staff report being incomplete because Zionswood submitted its latest version of plans only four and five days before the meeting, commissioners decided to delay a vote.

“Most people are much more happy to know at least the general outline of what’s coming,” Jones said.

What happened: The commission approved plans to add a nearly 8,000-squarefoot building at Boone Village at approximately 51 N. Ford Road.

What it means: Planned for the southwest corner of what is now the shopping center’s parking lot, the building could hold anywhere from one to five tenants. Developers submitted two plans, one showing the design with a drive-thru option and one without. The plan was approved with the condition that if a drive-thru is used, the establishment must be one that makes a majority of its sales inside the establishment.

What’s next: Construction is expected to begin this summer with tenants moving in early next year.

What happened: The commission approved plans for a two-story mixed-use building at 7637 E. Stonegate Dr. What it means: The 4,000-square-foot structure will house a hair salon employing eight to 10 workers on the first floor and a single-family residential unit on the second floor. Plane slides off runway news@currentzionsville.com A plane slid off the runway upon landing March 21 at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville, leaving the aviation seven passengers and two crew members startled but uninjured.

The pilot told responders that the plane’s right brake locked up during landing, forcing the aircraft to the side of the runway.

The plane departed Groton-New London, Conn., at 5:07 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis at 7:38 p.m. Records show that the aircraft belongs to Farrell 5 LLC of Defiance, Ohio.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted to review the incident.

Responders included Boone County Sherriff’s Office, Zionsville police and fire departments, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and Hamilton County Airport Authority.

Now that spring is here, many birders will be out looking for their favorite species. One of the most difficult to birds identify is the sparrow. The Zion Nature Center wants to help by offering a two-part sparrow identification workshop from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 12 followed by an April 15 walk.

The center offered a warbler workshop in the fall, and participants said they would be interested in additional programs to help identify other birds, especially sparrows.

The workshop will be conducted by Rob Ripma, a well-known Indiana birder.

“There are two parts to the workshop.

An indoor information session and a walk through at Starkey Park,” said Mindy Murdock, Zion Nature Center park naturalist.

“The biggest part is the indoor part, as that is where the participants will get the most information, but we hope they can go to both.”

“I know sometimes it’s hard for people to get out on the weekends, but the walk will be fun,” Murdock said.

The cost to attend both sessions is $25.

It includes a field guide of sparrows of the United States. Class size is limited, so those interested should register by April 5. Email naturecenter@zionsville-in.gov to sign up.

Pull for Parks this April

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com During April, the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. is inviting residents to get outside and help remove the nature invasive garlic mustard plant.

It overtakes other plants if not routinely pulled out of the ground. Each April is set aside for Zionsville residents to offer their assistance through the Pull for Parks program.

“Typically, April is the best month to identify garlic mustard,” said Mindy Murdock, Zionsville park naturalist.

People interested in helping can contact the Zion Nature Center to be put on an email list announcing events.

“I watch the weather, and if it looks like we have a good day, we will send out a notification on where to meet and at what time,” Murdock said. “There will be some times during the weekdays and some evenings.”

Murdock and other employees will educate the groups on what to look for during their pulls.

“Usually someone from the parks department will be there to make sure the groups have trash bags on hand at the park and where to dispose of them,” Murdock said.

“If they don’t know what it looks like, we’ll show them and how to remove it.”

Groups looking for community service hours are welcome to participate as well.

“We are looking for organizations to help,” Murdock said. “They can contact me and set up a specific date for them. We’ll coordinate their efforts at different parks.”

This year, efforts will focus mostly on Starkey Park, the Town of Zionsville’s largest park.

“Last year, we did eight pulls with about 180 people participating total,” Murdock said. “Weather has a lot to do with it. I’m hoping we reach right around that same number this year.”

Missie Best, Andy Clayton and J.P. Huber attended Zionsville Community Schools growing up. Clayton and Huber graduated in 1989 and Best graduated in 1991. The Friendly Tavern St. Patrick’s Day Party is a celebrated tradition for these long-time friends.

Adult swim lessons offered

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com April is Adult Learn to Swim Month, and the Zionsville Aquatic Center is offering $10 lessons to encourage safe aquatics swimming.

Classes are taught by members of Zionsville Aquatic Masters, a local branch of United States Masters Swimming.

Lessons will be every Monday and Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 1:15 p.m. starting April 10. Classes will not be held Easter Sunday, April 16.

“We do charge a $10 fee to register, but guests could take eight lessons or one lesson for that $10 fee,” Zionsville Aquatic Center Director Lisa Brown said.

More than 100 participants have taken advantage of the lessons in previous years.

“It’s so cool because these people come in, and they haven’t ever put their face in the water before,” Brown said. “They’ll blow bubbles, and they’re able to do it with our help. They’re so grateful. It’s pretty neat.”

According to the Center for Disease Control, 10 people die each day from drowning, and a majority of victims are adults.

We can’t shop without music Commentary by Ward Degler I was chatting with a friend in the produce department of the grocery store the other day when it dawned plain talk on both of us that we almost had to yell to be heard. The reason was music.

We quickly sidestepped the carrots and lettuce to a quieter venue in the soup aisle so we could finish our conversation. Later, I wondered who the genius was that decided we couldn’t shop for groceries without music blaring in our ears.

A little research brought me face-to-face with George Owen Squier, major general, U.S. Army, retired. The general, it seems, in addition to occasionally participating in wars, had a fascination with electronics.

It was this fascination that led him in 1910 to discover something called multiplexing, which allowed for sending multiple signals over telephone and electrical wires.

Not long after that, the general noticed folks hovering around rudimentary radio sets straining their ears to hear scratchy renditions of popular music.

Since there were only a couple of radio stations around at the time, and broadcast quality was pathetic, at best. The general

wondered why not send better quality music over electrical wires into everybody’s home?

And that was the day Muzak was born, piped in music that today bounces off the walls in virtually every store, elevator and lobby on the planet.

Years later the baby boomers arrived on the music scene and decided that elevator music needed to be put out of its misery.

They quickly switched the commercial scene from background music to what they called “foreground” music, basically a more in-your-face style of tunes.

As a result, Muzak faltered and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Something called Mood Media bought what was left of the company and permanently retired the name in 2013.

General Squier died in 1934, so it’s hard to say what he would think of his creation.

As for me, I just stay away from the produce department if I want to chat with someone.

Zionsville couple helps pair inmates, retired racing dogs

Her nonprofit, cover story Prison Greyhounds, pairs retired Daytona Beach Kennel Club racing dogs with inmates at the Putnamville Correctional Facility, who help prepare the canines for adoption.

It’s an unlikely partnership, but one that’s benefiLouden cial for the dogs and the inmates. “(The inmates) exercise responsibility and appreciate the chance to give back to their community by doing something worthwhile that really makes a difference,” Louden said. “The guys experience the reward of a job well-done. They know that the greyhound has a better chance at a successful adoption because they stepped up for the program.”

As for the greyhounds, life in prison prepares them for transitioning into a home environment. The dogs have grown up in a kennel with dozens of other greyhounds and have encountered few people. In prison, that’s reversed.

“The greyhounds are highly socialized.

All racers are used to being handled with people and dogs but have never been on slick floors or climbed staircases,” Louden said. “They don’t know mirrors, glass.”

Such was the case for Carolina Glare, a 3-year-old greyhound who raced in 15 events in 2015. She went through the twomonth Prison Greyhounds program before being adopted by Eric and Melissa Claflin of Zionsville later that year.

“For many of these dogs, it’s the first time they’ve been in an environment that wasn’t the farm they were raised on or the racetrack where they spent their entire lives,” said Melissa, a nurse by day. “Some of them have never been on grass before.”

The Claflins have enjoyed watching their greyhound – who they renamed Hula because “she was very elegant and quite the dancer,” Melissa said – adapt to life in a home.

“It was like she belonged here,” said Eric, an EMS director. “We had been told they are very easy to integrate into your daily routine, and we found that to be very much true.”

When the greyhounds retire from racing, they are loaded into a climatecontrolled trailer and driven from Daytona Beach, Fla., to their new home for an event that Prison Greyhounds calls New Dog Day. Volunteers are on site to welcome the dogs and take them for a walk.

Then they take one dog per car to the Putnamville Correctional Facility, where the dogs are bathed, groomed and introduced to their team of inmate handlers.

In prison, the handlers take the dogs to school, chapel, family visits and recreation activities. The greyhounds live in the dorm and sleep in crates set up next to their handlers.

“We focus on transitioning the hounds from athletes to family pets, focusing on good house manners,” Louden said. “This is not an obedience class, but instead we focus on things that the average adopter will truly value.”

The hounds graduate after spending approximately eight weeks in the program.

Louden acknowledges that greyhounds aren’t for everyone, and that people interested in adopting one should learn as much about the breed as they can through books or getting involved with programs like Prison Greyhounds. She owns four greyhounds and is fostering another, so she knows the tremendous bond that can form with a retired racing dog when it’s a good fit.

“They are like the wind when they run, simply breathtaking,” she said. “What we love about these fast friends is both their sleek, friendly, fast way of racing through our back yards and into our hearts, but also the alertness, loyalty and socialization that the breeders on the greyhound farms and trainers on the track have built into the dogs.”

Commentary by Terry Anker What is it about macaroni and cheese?

While handy smartphone applications designed to track our intake of calories will warn that the creamy pasta dish can push to our daily limits in a single serving, it still makes our dietary “cheat” list. Whether it is this one or some other so-called comfort food, we all crave, well, comfort. Certainly, the simple sugars and fat content fill our bellies. But isn’t its appeal more than an intentional nap inducement? It is a reminder of simpler times and fond memories of meals long-passed.

Whatever the root of our fascination, we seek the consistent redundancy of the familiar reassurance to calm when our lives overwhelm. As such, books, films, vacation spots and even favorite pants can serve a similar function. We inveterate channel-surfers will pause for a re-run of a long-cancelled sitcom to be reminded of an episode that we’ve already enjoyed a dozen times before. We know the plot – twists, turns and all. Yet, we hang on each scene anxiously awaiting the delivery of the next line. In a confusing and complicated world, it brings a long-sought sense of order.

Does a false sense of omnipotence give us a false sense of control? Or, are we justifiably eager to pursue a venue to satisfaction that we know will consummate? With so many promises unfulfilled, are we right to seek the proven and shun the unknown?

Long days and short nights can wear us down. We work to make our way in a world that seems increasingly unfamiliar and unsettled. Change is at our doorstep and cannot be kept at bay. Some, we embrace. Too much can overwhelm. If a bit of comfort helps us cope, let’s dig in.

That’s the way we prefer to live in America, and for the plain talk most part, we can. If something breaks, we replace it. If we can’t afford something, we finance it. If we flub up, we fake it.

Recently, I slipped on a wet floor and got a freakishly big bump on my knee. It didn’t hurt, but the size prompted me to go to the doctor. He said I was fine and handed me a prescription for Percocet, a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone.

Percocet. For a bump on my knee.

I was mortified. As a nurse, I am too familiar with the heroin crisis in Indiana and that often it starts with oxycodone.

I’ve seen newborns suffer and even die from horrific withdrawal. I’ve talked to a social worker in the needle-exchange program who says her clients range from

wealthy housewives to people on welfare and everything in between.

While it’s easy to blame practitioners for over-prescribing and look to legislators to fix it, the problem goes much deeper.

We do not know how to cope with pain.

That’s a problem, because life is full of it.

Dr. Paul Brand spent years researching and treating leprosy — curable with antibiotics — in India. He concluded that a leper’s inability to feel pain results in injuries, which result in necrotizing tissue loss.

We’re becoming a society of emotional lepers, and our kids are, too.

The heroin epidemic is complicated and there’s no quick fix. But for starters, we’d be wise to consider the gift of allowing ourselves to experience and learn from pain.

This is the time of year, folks, that I am perpetually exhausted.

As a parent, I’m tired of the humor dance and color guard competitions that I feel compelled out of guilt to attend. As a teacher, I’m overwhelmed by the fact that we still have two months left in the school year when I’ve been over it since the godforsaken time change three weeks ago. And as a mom, if I have to clean up one more muddy paw or footprint, you will probably find me apoplectic and naked in the hard liquor aisle at Meijer.

Enough already. Let’s just get summer here!

Seriously. Spring is stupid. The weather can’t make up its mind, one day snowing and the next a balmy 75. I can’t store away the parkas and boots, but I also have to have shorts and flip-flops at the ready. On rainy afternoons, I feel happy because I have an excuse to sit on my couch and do nothing, but then the sun will come out and shine on those show-off daffodils, and I feel miserable for sitting on my couch and doing nothing. Perhaps most significantly, all the sports worth watching come to end by mid-April, and I’ve nothing to fill the void except U18 rec soccer, which more often than not gets cancelled because of lightening or funnel clouds.

True, my beloved Kentucky Derby takes place the first Saturday in May, and, of course, there’s a car race around here that people seem to like, but apart from those, why bother? Why can’t we just skip to July, bring out the heat and cold beer and get down to enjoying the best few months of the year? No homework battles, no early morning alarms and no plastic Easter grass to cut out of the Bissell. Because frankly, I’m just exhausted!

Mary Ellen is planning our 2017 summer vacation to the Canadian Rockies. Back in 2007, we went to the Grand humor Canyon, the only place in America where you’re allowed to drag your kid to the precipice of one of the world’s deepest chasms, but they put you in the slammer if you feed a squirrel.

In the gift shop on the South Rim, the clerk recommended a book called — hold on to your hat (actually, hold on to anything you can) — “Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon.” What a charming choice for fans of light summer reading.

The authors do not restrict their colorful travelogue to unscheduled plunges to the bottom. They want you to know that with a little bit of poor planning, you can also die of dehydration or starvation.

Apparently, the canyon is safe if you are careful, but the book seems oddly misplaced in the gift shop so close to, well, the edge. There aren’t pamphlets relating the history of scaldings on the counter of McDonald’s or brochures about whimsical power-tool mishaps attached to your chainsaw purchases.

Other entertaining stories in the book include bear attacks, drownings and rock slides. Maybe I’m an optimist but I look at it this way: just a few hundred deaths in 6 million years. That’s not a bad record.

In one touching chapter, a man makes tea for his wife out of a deadly canyon flower, and they both die within minutes. In another, a woman tries to pet a mountain lion. An elderly couple got lost in their 1996 Taurus on a back road. They were found dehydrated, but still alive. They had no water but a week’s supply of Depends. I’d call that ironic.

Travelers from abroad love the Grand Canyon. Europeans winter in Arizona. Asians summer in the Canyon. Americans usually fall there. Approximately 600 feet. That’s just an average, though; your actual plummet may vary.

This summer, we probably can’t avoid dangerous cliffs, windy roads and harsh weather. But we will stay away from bookstores.

When Mary Watkins decided to open a bistro, she knew exactly where to go and why — Whitestown.

“Location, location, restaurant location. Whitestown is an up-and-coming community and is growing by leaps and bounds,” Watkins said.

Watkins spent a few months remodeling the building at 4 N. Main St. before having a soft opening for the White Stallion Italian Bistro March 8. A grand opening will be held in May. “Soft because I recently retired and now just want to enjoy the journey and serve some of the atmosphere and foods that I have experienced,” said Watkins, who previously worked in the food industry in northern Indiana.

The bistro can seat 99 inside. A patio set to open in late spring or early summer will seat at least another 50.

Watkins said she chose the restaurant’s name because a stallion is a symbol of “different things in different cultures.”

“I chose the name for that reason and the idea of it being fairy-tale-like. In my travels, I have had the opportunity to experience different atmospheres and cultures,

and I find I like the European styles more than others,” she said. “When people visit, they will notice a European flare in style and eventually that will flow over into a full menu of classic dishes of Italian, French and classic American as well.”

The bistro serves pizza and sandwiches.

A full-time chef is coming on board in April. Watkins plans to update the former pub into a non-smoking family restaurant by the spring of 2018. But for now, it is a 21-and-older restaurant.

“Response has been amazing. The first weekend was a smashing success in many areas,” she said.

The White Stallion Bistro is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturdays.

The hours and days will change after the May grand opening.

Feinstein, Jackson to team up

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Michael Feinstein has been eager to musically reconnect with his friend Cheyenne Jackson.

Jackson, however, has been busy with actconcerts ing, including regular stints on “American Horror Story” and several other TV shows and movies.

“So it’s been hard to snag him,” Feinstein said.

Feinstein and Jackson finally found a date and will appear together at 8 p.m. April 29 at the Palladium, part of the Center for the Performing Arts, in Carmel.

Feinstein, artistic director for the center, usually appears on the Palladium’s schedule at least once per year. He also hosts the annual Songbook Academy event and the annual galas.

“Cheyenne generously has made time on his schedule to come to Carmel because he was at the opening of the center and loves the city and loves the venue,” Feinstein said. “He wanted to do the gig. It will be with the finest musicians in the area with a lot of duets. Cheyenne will do some of his signature solo numbers. Since I started working with Cheyenne, he’s done a couple of solo pop albums.”

Feinstein said the concert will be a mixture of standards, some classic Frank Sinatra duets and some of the contemporary songs that Jackson performs. Feinstein will perform some solo numbers as well.

“So it will be a very eclectic evening,” he said. “We have a great chemistry together on stage. We’re so comfortable.”

‘Miranda’ full of mystery

By Zach Dunkin • editorial@youarecurrent.com There’s a line in the stage thriller “Miranda,” where the main character is asked what her theater mother knows about the work she does in the CIA. Miranda answers, “There’s so little you can talk about without talking about too much of Godinez it, you know?”

And so it goes with playwright James Still’s haunting play, which opens on Indiana Repertory Theatre’s Upperstage March 28 for a run through April 25.

“Miranda” is a mind-bending existential crisis of a CIA operative who goes by many names. Who is she? What keeps her working in the Middle East after all these years?

Why can’t she leave? Whose war is she fighting and who is the enemy? And how does she find herself directing a production of “Othello” in Yemen with teenagers?

“There really is so little you can talk about without talking about too much of it,” said Still, IRT’s 20-year playwright-in-residency.

Why the CIA? Why a woman? Why Yemen?

Why “Othello?” The answers, perhaps, are in another line in the play: “If all else fails, lie truthfully.”

“There’s a thin line that separates the play and the writer, but it’s in that mysterious place where the work happens, where the story emerges, where the characters seem more real to myself than myself,” Still Still said.

Although written in 2014, director Henry Godinez said what is happening on stage is similar to what is going on in the world today.

“We live at a time in our country when inflammatory rhetoric about foreigners in general, and Muslims in particular, is charged with suspicion and fear,” Godinez said. “A lot is being said that questions the integrity and motives of our intelligence operatives.

“Any opportunity we can be afforded to view our shared humanity is a rare and much-needed thing. That is exactly what James has given us with his hauntingly beautiful play.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Updated kitchen and living areas Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions: The goal for these areas was to improve functionality and openness, maximize storage space and strategically design the aesthetics to feel continuous throughout.

1. The kitchen cabinets were replaced and now wrap around the kitchen, creating additional storage.

Also, a separate buffet area was added to include a beverage fridge and additional countertop space.

2. The countertops were updated to granite and an intricate backsplash was added. The new undermount sink, faucet and undercabinet lighting are perfect touches to add functionality and task lighting.

3. New durable tile flooring was installed in the kitchen, back hall and laundry room.

4. The wall between the sunroom and living room was removed to create one larger space. The half-wall between the dining and living areas was also removed.

5. To complete the continuous aesthetic flow of the entire open space, the fireplace was updated with the same tile used as the kitchen accent backsplash tile.

Before Background Info: These owners reside in the Parks at White River neighborhood in Fishers. They knew they wanted to update their kitchen and adjacent living spaces but did not really know where to start.

Before problems: The previous kitchen was outdated with tile countertops, dysfunctional storage space and insufficient lighting. Part of the bamboo flooring was missing due to a leak. They also wanted to make the adjacent living spaces feel like one connected area with the kitchen. A half-wall between the dining and living areas, as well as a full-height wall between the living and sunroom areas, were prohibiting this open concept. The fireplace also needed cosmetic updates.

I can see what you see. The proliferation of social media has allowed us to share events with friends and family across the globe. Through pictures, tweets, status updates and a host of sites, a virtual travelogue of someone’s life is available. . .to everyone. In the world of divorce litigation, however, this has given rise to an entirely new method of collecting information and, ultimately, evidence to put before a court charged with deciding divisions of assets and custody of children. With the popularity of social media, the internet is filled with information from online profiles. Users who are unaware of the broad availability of this information to a former spouse or opposing counsel are posting at their own risk. With so much of what is posted being available to “share,” it is nearly impossible to control access to this information. Further, as part of information exchanges common to divorce proceedings, it is now common to request the entire history of a Twitter account or Facebook page, so even if your privacy settings would not allow the former spouse or counsel to see your account in real time, they will get to comb over all your pictures and posts to pick out those which can cast you in a negative light.

Tweeting evidence. That great picture of you and a bunch of friends doing shots before the concert received 62 “likes,” 22 “comments,” and 5 “shares.” Now it’s being presented to a Court to show that you left the children with a sitter while

you went out and got drunk. Fair or unfair, in the hands of an experienced litigator that post can speak volumes about your priorities, bad habits and even the quality of your parenting.

That “vent” about how the children would be so much better off if your ex joined the Peace Corps and vanished from their lives? It’s being presented to argue that you’ve done all you can to alienate the children. These are just examples of “normal” interactions through social media that, in the context of a contested divorce, can be damaging to your position and compromise your arguments to a court.

How is it used? The Indiana Court of Appeals recently ruled that witness testimony identifying a Twitter account taken together with the posted content was enough to authenticate that the account belonged to a criminal defendant without the identification of the account by the defendant himself. Of course, the most common way for that evidence to make it before the Court will be to have the actual person identify the account and the questionable position during cross-examination. Don’t let this be you!

James Smithson’s Smithsonian legacy Commentary by Don Knebel The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., is often called the “nation’s attic” because of its extraordinary collection of more than 150 million items. It is travel named for James Smithson, who made his only trip to the United States after his death.

Smithson was born in Paris sometime in 1765, the illegitimate son of an English nobleman and a wealthy widow.

Smithson spent his adult life traveling throughout Europe, often in the company of Europe’s scientific elite, studying a wide variety of natural phenomena. He published 27 papers about his conclusions, including one about how to brew a better cup of coffee. One of Smithson’s papers resulted in a mineral being named “smithsonite” in his honor.

When Smithson, who never married, died in Italy in 1829, his will specified that his assets were to go to the United States, which he had never visited, to found “the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” After considerable debate, the government accepted 105 bags of gold coins worth more than $11 million today, at the time almost 2 percent of the entire federal budget. In 1846, Congress created the Smithsonian Institution as a center for research and as a repository for the government’s growing scientific collections.

In 1855, a red sandstone building, combining Romanesque and Gothic details, was completed just east of the Washington Monument, then under construction, as the home of the Smithsonian Institution. In 1904, Alexander Graham Bell traveled to Italy and returned with the disinterred body of James Smithson, which was reinterred in the building now known as “the Castle” because of its
