Zionsville mayor highlights streets, parks in State of the Town address

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak kicked off the annual State of the Town presentation March 18 by speaking on comDEVELOPMENT pleted 2018 street projects and upcoming 2019 street projects.

STREETS “What everyone wants to know is streets.

It’s the most popular department with projects,” Haak said. “Each year we are spending more and more in our street budget. I say that every year, and it’s true. When I first came on town council in 2008, our annual repaving budget was $200,000. This year alone with resurfacing, I think we are close to $2 million probably, and if you add in new road construction, we are at $15 million we are going to spend this year.”

Upcoming street projects for 2019 include a stormwater project along Oak Street to eliminate street flooding. Zionsville Road will close April 1 and remain closed through November to allow for widening from a two-lane configuration to three lanes between Technology Center Drive and 106th Street.

Haak said the complete closure was decided for several reasons.

“It shaves about two months off the project and saves close to half-a-million dollars on the project as well,” he said. “You get a better project, construction-wise.”

PARKS DEPARTMENT Haak touched briefly on the new municipal facility and Zion Nature Center that is in the design phase.

“The town purchased the former Rail Trail gardens property on 875 near the high school sports complex. We owned 10 (acres) and now we have an additional 15,” Haak said.

“We are relocating our street department and parks department out there into their own buildings.”

The new building will have an outdoor learning space at the new nature center and public restrooms on the Rail Trail.

Zionsville has more acres of parks per 1,000 residents compared to its neighbors. Zionsville has 420 acres of parks, equating to 16.33 acres per 1,000 residents. Whitestown has 5.3 acres of parks per 1,000 residents. Westfield has 4.76 acres per 1,000 and Carmel has 5.4 acres per 1,000.

Haak explained a grant the town recently applied for through the Next Level Trails grant program. The application is for a $2 million grant to fund an additional 1.78 miles of the trail.

“We are working on finishing our portions of the Big 4 Trail, both south and north. We want to connect it down to Zionsville Road and we want to connect it to Whitestown,” Haak said. “It’s a fairly concerted effort now through a lot of cooperation at the county level, for sure, but also at the state level. The governor has the Next Level Trails program, and we applied for it. We think we are being strongly considered. The state calls us a couple times a week now for clarifying questions.

That means they are seriously reviewing us and it will be a huge asset not just for us but for the county.”

Out of $25 million available for the Next Level Trails grant, more than $144 million has been applied for by municipalities.

POLICE AND FIRE Haak updated the community on 2018 public safety numbers and recent updates within the police and fire departments.

The Zionsville Police Dept. provided body cameras and new in-car cameras to each officer. ZPD placed five school resource officers in Zionsville Community Schools, and 4.41 tons of drugs were collected in 2018 as part of the Drug Take Back program.

On the fire department side, Haak said the ZFD added five emergency warning sirens in 2018 and responded to 2,400 calls for service.

More than 400 people were trained in CPR. He also gave an update on Fire Station 92 improvements.

“After we moved into that building, we found it wasn’t quite big enough for the complete operations of our fire department. They needed some additional locker room space and equipment storage space,” Haak said.

“The governor has the Next Level Trails program, and we applied for it. We think we are being strongly considered.

Zionsville resident takes part in Be Cool campaign

As part of March being Disability Awareness Month, the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities AWARENESS launched a Be Cool campaign designed to help others understand how to interact with those with disabilities.

“Just act yourself and don’t treat people differently,” Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities Executive Director Christine Dahlberg said.

Em Mais, a Zionsville resident who is studying psychology and gender studies at Indiana University, took part in the campaign.

“One of the things about this video and campaign that has been the most beneficial to me has been the conversations I have had and the people I have met,” said Mais, who suffers from a chronic illness through a genetic condition. “I have loved getting to hear from other people in the disability community who were excited to have someone who looked like them or was not

what most people think of when they think of disability. I have loved getting a chance to educate people about service dogs and how much Quinn (Mais’ service dog) has changed my life. Recreation on Wheels to move outdoors next month

During the winter months, activities are held indoors. Starting in mid-April, the activities are moved outside to different parks in the Whitestown area.

“We really want to highlight all of our parks so residents can enjoy them,” Burns said.

Activities include games and sports for all activity levels and ages.

Each year, Whitestown Parks and Recre-

ation evaluates what activities were successful in the past and looks at new popular toys to keep offerings fresh.

Each week, the department will load up a trailer and take the equipment to a Whitestown park or open green space. The schedule will change each week to allow busy families time during the day, evening and weekend to take advantage of the free program.

Zionsville Robotics heads to world championships

A Zionsville robotics team has qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championships for the first time in sevCOMPETITION eral years.

The Tesseract team, part of the Zionsville Community High School Robotics Club, placed 10th at the state competition in March. By virtue of that finish, the team qualified for the world championship without having to compete at the national level.

All four team members are juniors. This is the first year they’ve worked together as a team.

Dominic Holifield, Tesseract’s team captain, serves as driver and builder. Atharva Naik programs the robot and Alex Lam and Jerry Tang track their process and engineering. Lam and Tang also actively scout other teams on YouTube, which helps them decide which teams they would like to compete against.

While teams are randomly pitted against one another at the state level, those ranked higher in qualification at worlds can select their opponent for each round.

During after-school club time, team members make necessary adjustments and practice field elements such as stacking discs or throwing balls at targets.

The team built its robot in October 2018, then rebuilt it in January to prepare for the state competition.

“Indiana, I would say, is one of the most competitive regions,” said Holifield, adding that four of the top 12 teams ranked in the world are from Indiana.

The world competition is April 24-27 in Louisville.

Men like him should live forever. Those of us who knew him almost believed he would.

Maybe because we needed PLAIN TALK him.

Fr. Glenn O’Connor died last week at the age of 66, and too many people are left now without his wisdom, counsel and humor. He was quite literally part of the everyday lives of hundreds of people.

For four decades, he was part of the Indianapolis 500. Dozens of race drivers and pit crews knew him as the “priest in the pits,” and his voice over the intercom to drivers on the track was as well known as that of Paul Page, the “Voice of the Indianapolis 500.”

On race day, he heard confessions, said Mass, counseled drivers and hit the pits to do the hard grunt work of a race track crew member.

He also was part of the Catholic Cursillo movement. He served as spiritual director on more Cursillo retreat weekends than he could remember. He was always up before anyone else and stayed up late at night to talk with anyone who might need a few

consoling words.

As a priest, he was pastor of several parishes through the years. While at St. Joseph Parish in Indianapolis, he helped found Seeds of Hope, a halfway house for women recovering from alcoholism or drug addiction, and he helped negotiate the purchase of the old St. Joseph convent from the archdiocese for the home.

He established major fundraisers for the home, and every summer he took all the residents and staff up to his family lake cottage for a weekend of fun. He remarked once that it was possibly the only good time many of the residents had ever experienced.

He was part of the ebb and flow of visi-

tors to our city as chaplain at the Indianapolis International Airport. Anyone who lost their luggage, got stranded or needed help would likely come face-to-face with Fr. Glenn.

He was part of the lives of countless homeless in our city. Many down on their luck found a warm bed and hot food at the church rectory. Kids headed for trouble often found themselves working at the parish instead of cruising the streets with the gangs.

In spite of a hectic schedule, Fr. Glenn found time in the fall to go hunting and time to put on a charity dinner with dishes of wild game. He also found time to deliver birthday presents to every one of his 80 closest relatives. And he personally wrote Christmas cards to just about everyone he knew.

He was part of the lives of many, including me. He showed us it was possible to be both holy and human.

ZCHS teacher to use $12,000 grant to improve French and Spanish skills, learn Arabic

A NEW ALPHABET

COVER STORY Now, she plans to strengthen her skills in French and Spanish and learn a third language — Arabic — by using a $12,000 Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program Lilly Endowment grant to travel to Paris, Morocco and Spain this summer.

The Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program allows teachers to renew their commitment to teaching by allowing them to pursue their dreams and passions.

“A lot of (the trip) is based around the idea of language learning,” Conrad said. “The first language I learned other than English was French, so I’m going to start out spending several days in Paris, and then I’m going to be going to Morocco, where I’ll be going to an Arabic school for five weeks to study modern-standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic. That will be my new language.

“Then, after that, I’m going for a couple of weeks to Spain and doing some travel throughout southern Spain.”

Conrad began learning Spanish in 2016 when she did field work for an education certificate program in Nicaragua. Knowing she was going to be living with a host family, she traveled there early to attend a Spanish school to study the language.

Conrad said as a language teacher, it is possible to fall into the mindset of not understanding why a student struggles learning part of a new language. Learning Spanish gave her a firsthand experience of what it’s like to be a student learning a new language.

“It was personally satisfying to learn Spanish, but it was like reliving the experience my students had,” she said. “It was like that very firsthand experience, like, just

because you heard the word two minutes ago, you forget immediately and it’s natural and normal. It was really eye-opening to relive that experience of language learning again, so I kept pursuing it.”

After her trip to Nicaragua, Conrad began working with a Spanish tutor and traveled to Mexico in 2018 to study more of the language. She hesistates to refer to herself as fluent.

“Fluent is a weird word,” she said. “I can read a book or a newspaper or I can watch a show. I can make myself be understood, just with a lot of mistakes, usually. I have really focused on learning Spanish. I don’t know if I will ever teach Spanish or not, but I would love to pass the licensing exam in Spanish.”

By traveling to France, Morocco and Spain, Conrad also will see the influence culture has on language.

“My big focus in each country, too, is finding ways different cultures and language

overlap,” she said. “There’s a lot of influence of Arabic-speaking cultures there. You see it in a lot of the sites that may have been a mosque and turned into a cathedral. There’s so much overlap.”

Although Arabic is Morocco’s official language, Spanish and French each have influence in the northwest African nation.

In Mororocco’s capital city of Rabat, Conrad will be studying at Qalam wa Lawh Center for Arabic Studies. The school is often a destination for students who want to travel abroad or participate in a language-learning program.

“I advise students and parents on some options and opportunities for things like study abroad and travel abroad, and I think it’s usually really reassuring to say, ‘Yes, this is a respected program, but I’ve studied at this school, I know the experience they are going to have,’” Conrad said. “I always want to be making as strong of a recommendation as I can to students.”

French, Spanish and English languages have the same alphabet. The Arabic language alphabent, however, is dramatically different. That has made learning the language a special challenge for Zionsville Community High School French teacher Amy Conrad, who also speaks Spanish.

“It’s been a learning process, the Arabic alphabet,” she said.

In addition to having completely different letters, Arabic also is written in the opposite direction than the other languages Conrad speaks.

“I think it’s going to take time, and Arabic is just a language that is more different from English than French or Spanish are, so I have to be reasonable and expect I will learn it much more slowly,” Conrad said.

Despite the challenges, Conrad loves learning the new language. Being able to communicate with someone in their native language provides a new perspective.

“It’s easy to make assumptions about what somebody thinks, and you get to assume that because they can’t tell you any differently because you can’t understand them,” Conrad said. “If they can tell you what they think in the language they’re most comfortable in, it’s such an interesting experience to get that perspective.”

LETTER Don’t let teachers carry guns

Treasured trinkets

Commentary by Terry Anker Those of us who have occasion or obligation to travel with some regularity are confronted with the routine dilemma of what, if anything, to bring family, friends and colleagues to express that they have been remembered during the absence.

Airports and road-side convenience stores are filled with trinkets and talismans proclaiming that the bearer has some connection to the place in question. T-shirts and snow globes are transported from coast-to-coast and hemisphereto-hemisphere bearing status and affection. As the years roll by, the collections build and shelves are filled with endless kitsch and ephemera.

Many years ago, an autobiographical magazine essay shared the story of a now middle-aged writer who’d been the benefactor of his own traveling father’s largesse. In this case, the dashing dad would bring home miniature containers of shampoo from each hotel of his travels for his thenelementary school-aged son. The youngster found charm in their tiny size. As time passed, he lost interest, even found contempt for the “cheap” tokens. But years after his father’s passing, he still had scores of the diminutive plastic bottles. They came to represent something more. They connected him, across the miles and the years, to these simple, perhaps silly, gifts from papa.

Certainly, grand gesture and great expense could express affection. But can the smallest kindness, executed without fail, and offered with great and earnest sincerity, become that which we treasure most?

Can you Trump my view?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Several readers have accused me of making passive-aggressive comments about the president without providing HUMOR evidence. Fair enough. In their emails, they also resorted to pointing the finger at others rather than defending Trump, which, if having been a mother for 20 years has taught me anything, means they cannot. The real question for me is, and I’m not being trite here, how can anyone still support him as the moral leader of this nation?

I understand why Democrats do not. He goes against everything that more liberalminded people stand for – open immigration, gun control, carbon reduction, equitable access to education, to name a few (though he does spend like a Democrat! Per the CBO, the federal deficit is projected to increase by another $100 billion this year. That alone should have more fiscally minded Americans completely losing their shtick).

But how can anyone, particularly Republican females, continue to support a man who clearly does not respect women? I can chalk up his name-calling of Hillary Clinton as campaign mudslinging, but his total discount of Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony should have been a red flag to all Americans that Trump does not believe women are deserving of equal treatment.

And the fact that he refused to condemn the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, which ended with the murder of Heather Heyer, is reprehensible.

Disagree with me? Then defend him. I would love to learn that he is actually a good person.

Editor, I appeal to our state’s legislature to not pass legislation that would allow teachers to carry a gun into a school.

I wish our schools did not have to think about the reality of gun shootings, but we experience gun violence every day in our nation.

Active shooter drills are scary for students and staff as there is a real and present danger in our nation today that someone would hurt innocent students and staff.

Would a teacher wear the gun on his/her hip or keep the gun in a lockbox? If it is on their hip, how would we handle a curious student who might reach for the gun while sitting near his/her teacher? If the gun is in a lockbox, would the teacher ask any intruders to please give them a moment to unlock their gun?

I am in favor of gun-control reform, including strong background checks, a waiting period before a gun can be purchased and a requirement that requires gun owners to go through a follow-up registration review every four years (much like we go through with our driver’s license).

At Motion 4 Life Fitness, our members range in age from their thirties to their eighties.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Humor is helpful in combatting stress, but I believe grumpiness has its virtues as well. I’ll outline some things HUMOR that make me grouchy. They might be small, insignificant annoyances, but those are the best ones to get cranky about. I save humor for when I really need it.

I am tired of my Facebook notifications telling me things like: Suzanne Crowder has commented on Joe Rosen’s post about Bill Roman’s meme. I don’t know Suzanne, Joe or Bill. How annoying is that? No comment.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Peru.

I signed up for the language instruction app called Babbel. They sent me directions … in French. Merci d’avoir choisi Babbel. Voici quelques instructions pour faciliter le processus. That’s great — now I have to take French, also.

I want hand dryers in public bathrooms banned. They do not dry your hands. They blow air on your fingers. When I leave public bathrooms, my wife always asks me, “Why are your hands in your pockets?” Because they are still wet.

I’m tired of getting emails that say, You have won a free $100 Walmart gift card.

No, I haven’t. I have won the privilege of answering endless marketing questions so they can hook me up with people trying to sell me stuff. Does anyone ever get a $100 gift card? No clue. After the 60th or 70th question, I always give up.

I want there to be a law stating the number 0 and letter O can’t be used in passwords, because I can never tell the difference. I asked 9 or 1O people and it’s amazing h0w many agreed with me.

Finally, I am tired of my computer taking a siesta when I want to print something.

I press the button, and nothing happens except for bizarre clanking and groaning.

My computer repairman says the printer is “thinking” (maybe it is thinking about why it cost only $69 but each ink refill is $80). I press it several more times. It’s still thinking, so I go to bed. Next morning, I have a neat stack of 35 copies — 34 more than I wanted.

Gregory Hancock debuts ‘Exodus’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com When Gregory Hancock decided to put “SUPERHERO” on hiatus this year, he was determined to create a comDANCE plementary piece.

“SUPERHERO” details the story of Jesus Christ. Now, Hancock has focused on the first half of the Bible.

Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will present “Exodus” for the first time at 7 p.m. April 5 and 6 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

It’s inspired by the book of Exodus, the second book of The Torah and Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). It tells the story of the Israelites’ departure from Egypt, led by the prophet Moses through the wilderness to the Promised Land.

“It’s probably my most important piece I’ve done in a long time on so many levels,” said Hancock, executive artistic director and founder of GHDT. “Not just dance-wise, choreographically or musically, but the themes and issues and relevance because we really haven’t learned from history.”

Hancock is not using biblical names, thus Taylar Green is cast as The Chosen instead of Moses.

“It’s definitely challenging to portray such a big story, a story that transcends multiple religions,” Green said. “The physicality of the show is really challenging. We keep moving. We’re definitely working on getting that stamina and rhythm to go a full-length show.”

Green said the story will resonate with a lot of people, the same as Hancock’s “SUPERHERO” did for several years.

“It’s contemporary looking. It could be any time or any place,” Hancock said.

Abbie Lessaris portrays part of The Chosen’s tribe.

“We all portray the 10 plagues that happen in the Bible with our bodies,” Lessaris said. “We put the plague upon the oppressors. For the scene of the burning bush, I play the voice of God that speaks to The Chosen.”

Lessaris said her favorite aspect of the show is The Chosen’s tribe is all women and children.

“There are students from Anderson University in the show,” Hancock said. “We dressed them all very androgynously and anonymously. They are just this big scary group.”

The Oppressors wear black hoodies with ski masks, with their eyes showing.

Hancock said the 10 plagues from the Bible were made contemporary.

“Instead of frogs and lice, we changed them into pollution, desecration of the earth, gun violence, racism, selfishness, social media, government, poverty, war and death of the firstborn,” Hancock said.

“It’s very statement-making. Some of the plagues are hard to watch. They’re a little

disturbing. Art is meant to challenge us at times. Even though it’s hard for the dancers to portray them, I think it’s important we look at them in a different way. It’s one of my favorite parts, how the plagues are presented, and having The Chosen being a female is really important. The imagery is important. It opens where people are caged in by a fence. That serves as a metaphor for their freedom and the sea parting. It’s going to be a powerful imagery piece.”

Hancock said he has been collecting music and formulating ideas for more than a year. He started choreographing in January.

“The music is explosive and dynamic and aggressive,” he said. “But it’s also beautiful, tender and quiet. It’s all instrumental.”

Taipei’s Grand Hotel Commentary by Don Knebel Taipei, Taiwan is a modern city of nearly 3 million people. One of its most popular hotels was designed to reflect a dramatic cultural change.

TRAVEL After Japan gained control of Taiwan from the Chinese in 1895, it set out to establish Japanese culture on the island. As one of its earliest efforts, it built a major Shinto shrine atop Jiantan Mountain in what is now Taipei. As the highest of an eventual 65 shrines, this shrine became known as the Taiwan Grand Shrine. After the defeat of Japan in World War II, Taiwan came under control of the Republic of China, with its capital in Beijing.

In 1949, after losing the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai-Shek led several hundred thousand of his soldiers and about 2 million refugees to Taiwan. He proclaimed Taipei to be the provisional capital of the Republic of China, which required an effort to change the city’s Japanese look and feel. In 1952, Chiang Kai-Shek’s government began building a major hotel on the site of the Taiwan

Grand Shrine. To better identify Taipei with Chinese culture, architects designed the hotel in the classic Chinese style. When finally completed in 1973, the Taipei Grand Hotel was the tallest building in Taipei and became host to many international conferences and dignitaries. Its 285-foot-high pagoda-inspired roof featured dragon heads on its corners, each pointing outwardly.

During a reconstruction project in 1995, a fire broke out on the hotel’s roof that could not be reached by fire hoses, leading to the collapse of the entire roof. When the hotel re-opened in 1998, the dragon heads, traditional symbols of rain and water, were turned inwardly to help protect the roof from future fires. The presidential suite, containing Chiang Kai-Chek’s desk and his wife’s dressing table, can be rented for about $5,000 a night.

Going on a coffee run for your coworkers sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? Not only do you GRAMMAR GUY seem considerate of their caffeine needs, but you also offer to pay (usually), which makes you seem generous. You’re the hero of the office! But then you have to take down all their complicated orders, take the drinks away in one of those multi-cup holder things without spilling them all over your car (or your shirt), and then bring the correct drinks to everyone.

Seems like a hassle, doesn’t it? The next time you have this idea, just hand out $5 bills instead.

Everyone wants to be the office hero, but not everyone knows the right time to use “bring” or “take.” The problem is, both words have similar meanings. Both words are verbs that involve carrying something, whether literally or figuratively. “Bring” means to carry something along with you while “take” means to carry something away with you.

For example, when the barista finishes

making everyone’s espresso drinks (quick tip: it’s “espresso,” not “expresso”), you take the drinks from her. Similarly, you would bring the drinks to your co-workers. However, if I, as your boss, asked you to deliver coffee to the accounting department down the hall, I would say, “Please take this bucket of coffee to the accounting team.”

It all comes down to the difference between “toward” and “away.” When the object is coming toward the person speaking, use “bring.” When the object is coming away from the person speaking, use “take.” “Bring” indicates movement toward the writer/speaker, while “take” indicates movement away from the writer/speaker.

Take this advice to heart. Soon enough, your office mates will be bringing you piles of compliments on your journey up the corporate ladder.
