Nearly 650 Zionsville students huddled outside at three schools in below-freezing temperatures at 10 a.m.

EDUCATION March 14 as part of a national protest to demand stricter gun laws. The 17-minute walkout was also to honor the 17 people killed exactly one month earlier during a school shooting in Parkland, Fla. Entrances near all schools were closed and monitored by police to ensure student safety.

A dozen adults kept at a distance, yelled “thank you” and applauded the students as they reentered the building.

Nancy Carpenter, whose children graduated from Zionsville Community High School, came to support the students who participated.

“They give us hope for common sense someday,” she said.

Sue Bowron-White, who also watched the ZCHS students from a distance, has grandchildren in the schools. She said that she wants her family to attend school without fear of a shooting.

“It’s time for our Congress to step up and stand up to the NRA and do what is right for America and our children,” Bowron-White said.

Approximately 9 percent of all ZCS stu-

dents participated in the walkout: 189 at ZCHS, 232 at Zionsville West Middle School and 225 at Zionsville Middle School Four students at Zionsville Middle School organized the walkout for ZMS. Hanna Wilhite and her sister, Mia, wanted to participate but realized no one had taken control of organizing what would happen. Hanna was afraid it would be chaos without someone taking the lead, so the four girls took it into their own hands “to still keep it orderly and respectful.”

Those who participated received an unexcused absence, but Mia felt no harsher penalties were imposed because of the respect and quiet the students showed.

During the 17 minutes at ZMS, students read the names and information about each of the Florida victims, read a poem, held a moment of silence and ended with students sharing their hopes, dreams and wishes for the Florida families.

“It made us feel like this could actually make a difference,” Hanna said.

“I personally believe that the world has changed, so now we need to change,” Mia said. She said that students being in danger has encouraged them to speak out.

After the protest ZCS Supt. Scott Robison expressed his appreciation for the way students participated.

“It was peaceful and they were exercising freedom of expression,” he said.

Lyle Browne, chief operating officer of the Zionsville Education Foundation, visited the March 12 EDUCATION Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees meeting to discuss the 2018 Imagine Professional Development grants, which are awarded by ZEF every February.

Browne said the grants provide growth and renewal opportunities for teachers in the district by allowing them to pursue projects or attend educational conferences and bring that knowledge back to their students.

“In the past year, I’ve also learned that it’s really a blast to watch our grants grow in a direction that’s unexpected,” she said.

ZEF awarded eight grants this year totaling more than $15,000. Three were given to teachers at Zionsville West Middle School, four to elementary teachers and one to a teacher that will work on a project for the entire district. The grants will fund conference visits, mindfulness training, musical instrument training and more.

In other news, Mike Shafer, ZCS chief financial officer, presented the district’s updated Standard & Poor’s credit rating.

ZCS increased from an AA- rating to AA, which signifies that the district’s ability to meet financial requirements is very strong. ZCS is only the third public school corporation in Indiana to earn the rating, Shafer said.

“This new rating will get us about 10 basis points better on the interest rate on bonds that are going to be issued, which should work out for taxpayers saving about $30,000,” he said.

Other highlights: • The board voted to offer an early retirement incentive for certified staff.

• The board authorized the restoration of the varsity gymnasium floor at ZCHS.

Indianapolis Executive Airport is halfway through a master plan developed in 2008 and is preparing for conAIRPORT struction of its top priority project: a wildlife fence.

“We are very fortunate that we are in an undeveloped area at this time, but with that, then, comes deer, coyote and things, so the fence will be a big help in managing that,” said Brad Cozza, IEA executive director.

IEA was already develCozza oping plans for the fence when Cozza joined the airport in 2016, but the project became the top priority in 2012 after a deer and airplane made contact on the runway, he said.

The $1.1 million project will include contruction of more than 20,000 feet of fence.

In September 2017, IEA received a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to cover 90 percent of the cost. IEA will split the remaining 10 percent with the state. Construction is expected to begin this spring.

After the fence is complete, the runway/ taxiway extension project will become the top priority. The project will extend the southern end of the runway 1,500 feet toward CR 200. Cozza said contaminants — rain, ice, slush and snow — on the runway can decrease braking action, causing aircraft to require more pavement. “(The extension is) allowing our current mix of aircraft to operate more safely, with the fuel or the passengers that they are seeking to operate with, more reliably,” he said.

The extension is coupled with a project to increase capacity of the aboveground fuel tank and other smaller projects eligible for grants. The grouping accounts for $10 million of the 2018-2023 budget.

IEA will use airport funds this year to repair pavement, convert signage to LED lights, improve hangars and address fuel storage.

The master plan ends in 2028, but Cozza said IEA will reevaluate its progress in five years to pinpoint any deficiencies. He said his goal is for the airport to be reflective of the communities it serves and their growth.

Daughter breaking mom’s records at ZCHS

By Dawn Pearson news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Community High School girls basketball standout Maddie Nolan is one apple that did not fall far BASKETBALL from the tree. Her talent and passion for the game branched out from her roots.

Nolan’s mother, Kris Nolan, played basketball for Zionsville in the 1980s, setting many of the school’s scoring records. When Kris was inducted into the ZCHS Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008, no one knew that her daughter one day would break her mom’s records.

Kris played for Zionsville from 1980-1984, and the team won a sectional championship in 1983. She graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,047 points, becoming the first to surpass 1,000 points.

Her daughter passed that threshold this season, and she still has one year of high school remaining.

But basketball means more to the Nolans than stats and records.

“I like that basketball is a team sport. It teaches you how to work together toward a common goal,” Kris said. “It teaches you

sacrifices, time management and how to get along with all types of personalities. It is a great environment to learn life lessons and skills.”

Maddie also enjoys the team aspect of the game. Although the Eagles lost the state title game Feb. 24 to Warren Central, the experience was among the most memorable of her life so far.

“Even though we didn’t win state, it was awesome to play at Bankers Life (Fieldhouse) and be the first Zionsville basketball team to make it that far,” Maddie said.

“Playing with the kids we had this year made it even better because we were so close. We definitely love each other and didn’t want to stop playing together. Being able to cut down nets and prove a lot of people wrong this year with these kids was amazing.”

Kris’ favorite basketball memory was winning High Country Athletic Conference titles her junior and senior years in college.

She graduated from New Mexico State University in 1988.

“This was a first for NMSU and qualified us for the NCAA Tournament both years, also a first for NMSU,” Kris said.

Kris wasn’t Maddie’s only inspiration. She said that her father, Henry, played a huge role, too. “(My parents) signed me up for every sport possible when I was younger and let me pick which one I liked best,” she said.

It appears Maddie picked the right one.

“My favorite aspect about basketball is the competition and teamwork. I’m a very big competitor and love working toward a goal,” Maddie said. “I also enjoy playing with a team because I love having success with other kids who work just as hard as I do.”

Zionsville Community High School senior Will Hobick loves the hands-on experience of running a business EDUCATION during school hours.

“The ZCHS 4th Line gives students real-life business experience, contacting businesses, negotiating prices, calculating profit, etc.,” Hobick said.

“This program not only gives current high school students another option for lunch, but it also provides the entrepreneurship students a chance to learn outside of a textbook.”

Each Thursday for nine weeks, the entrepreneurship classes run a cafeteria line offering food from restaurants such as Zaxby’s, Roselli’s, Greek’s Pizzeria and Chick-fil-A. This school year’s final session is March 22.

“We did nine weeks this year because we had so many entrepreneurship students,” said Johnathan Grismore, who teaches the entrepreneurship classes.

Eighty entrepreneurship students were divided into nine teams. The 4th Line, which refers to a cafeteria line, began in 2008.

I believe in miracles Commentary by Ward Degler People ask how I keep my faith. There are a lot of moving parts to that answer, but whenever I waver, I think PLAIN TALK about miracles. There are many little inexplicables occurring every day, of course, but I like the big, over-bloated, indisputable ones.

In 1917, for instance, there was the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima in Portugal. Some 70,000 people witnessed that one. Think of it, it had been raining for days. Everyone was soaked, and the ground was deep mud.

Then, the sun whirled toward the earth and in minutes everything was completely dry.

But the one that defies all human understanding is the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt.

Scholars have determined there were an estimated 600,000 men following Moses into the desert. The women weren’t counted. Neither were the children. The total movement obviously involved more than a million souls.

Besides parting the Red Sea, what other miracles have occurred? Here are a few estimates put together by the quartermaster general of the United States Army. He’s the guy who figures out how many loaves of bread an army needs every day.

That many Hebrews needed 1,500 tons of food every day, more than an average freight train could carry. They would also

need about 4,000 tons of firewood for cooking.

For a million people to survive the heat of the desert, they would need something in the neighborhood of 11 million gallons of water each day. A railroad tank car holds a mere 35,000 gallons. You do the math.

The Hebrews traveled by day and camped at night. Our quartermaster general figured each night’s campground would cover 750 square miles, an area 35 miles long and 21 miles wide — bigger than all of our state parks combined (Brown County — our largest park — is only 26 square miles).

To revisit the Red Sea miracle, if the Hebrews crossed two abreast, the line would have been 800 miles long and would have taken 35 days and nights. Scripture tells us they crossed in a single night, which means they would have had to line up 5,000 abreast, and the path would have been 3 miles wide.

Faith, of course, is belief in things unseen, so miracles aren’t required. Still, it’s nice to know they’re there whenever we’re planning a long trip, or when it’s been raining for three days.

Zionsville Community High School students will have the opportunity to have artwork featured for years TOWN NEWS to come on Zionsville’s Walking Man sculpture.

The sculpture is on the outdoor plaza at Zionsville Town Hall just off the Big-4 Rail Trail. The 10-foot tall steel sculpture was gifted to the town in 2016 by the Community Foundation of Boone County.

“While preparing to celebrate the Foundation’s 25th anniversary in 2016, our staff began to brainstorm ways in which we could share our mission in Boone County,” Kristi Reynolds, president and CEO of CFBC, stated in an email. “During a meeting with Lebanon’s Back to the ‘50s Festival (committee) the idea of the Walking Man sculptures was brought up. We thought it was a perfect way to tie our communities together through art.”

The sculptures were designed by Anderson-based artist Levi Rinker. Lebanon, Whitestown and Jamestown also received Walking Man sculptures.

Community steps up to support local law enforcement, family of slain deputy

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Despite thousands of people packing Connection Pointe Christian Church in Brownsburg the late morning of March 9, a heavy silence filled the room.

COVER STORY Friends, family, law enforcement officers and other mourners gathered to say goodbye to Jacob Pickett, a Boone County Sheriff’s deputy who was fatally shot during a pursuit March 2.

Pickett, 34, a Zionsville resident, husband and father of two, was the first BCSO deputy to fall in the line of duty since 1935.

With his passing, his K-9 partner, Brik, has Pickett been retired from police work.

At the funeral, Gov. Eric Holcomb and BCSO Sheriff Mike Nielsen shared words of encouragement and memories along with U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, Pastor Steve Reeves and Tipton Police Dept. Officer Bradley Robins.

Prior to speaking, Nielsen paused at Pickett’s casket and laid his hand on top of the flag for several moments.

“It is my greatest honor to serve beside the men and women of our office,” Nielsen said. “It was my greatest honor to serve with Jake. We all know that any day, we may make that ultimate sacrifice, but it has now happened to one of our family.”

Nielsen said that on his last morning, Pickett was finish-

We lean into those prayers and into our faith in God during this unexplainable tragedy. We are surrounded by the strength of our family, law enforcement family, our church family, my school family, friends, and communities that Jake served and others that never knew him. These families and communities have wholeheartedly supported my family to honor my husband and his serving heart. For this support, I am eternally grateful.”

ing up a traffic stop when a fellow deputy asked him if he needed anything.

“Jake’s reply was, ‘It’s a beautiful morning, what else could I need?’” Nielsen said.

Following the funeral, a procession of hundreds of vehicles traveled 55 miles through Brownsburg, Lebanon, Whitestown, Zionsville, Carmel and Indianapolis to Pickett’s final resting place at Crown Hill Cemetery.

In Zionsville, supporters began lining Oak Street hours before the funeral procession arrived. Liz White was one of the first.

“I served in 9/11 at Ground Zero for seven weeks, so every moment that someone gives their life for service, it’s part of the work I do,” she said. “Each time there’s a sad funeral or tragedy like this, like today, it’s important to show the world that kindness and caring is greater than the bad that happens.”

White, a Red Cross volunteer, sat on the ground with an empty chair draped with an American flag beside her.

“Most of the time (law enforcement officers) don’t get support. They’re often faced with the things that don’t go right in the world, and they don’t often feel our presence and support,” White said. “We are behind them. Our hearts are with them.”

Two Duke Energy trucks flanked Oak Street to raise a massive American flag above the procession.

“Some of our linemen were moved by the passing of Deputy Pickett,” said Dan Rhodes, a spokesman for Duke Energy. “It’s the right thing to do. We wanted to show our support and let the officers know we support what they do, too.”

In the days after Pickett’s death, community members gathered to show their support. In Zionsville, Kristen Kelley organized a luminary walk March 7 in Heritage Trail Park.

“A lot of people were looking for a way to pay their respects and wanted to do something and didn’t know what,” said Kelley, who lives near the Picketts. She said community members decorated and lit more than 3,000 luminaries.

Commentary by Terry Anker Wisdom can come from the strangest of places. The same is said, too, of the lack thereof. Having been in the business of either being young, or being co-domiciled with the young, most Americans can say they’ve watched an episode or two of “The Simpsons.” Amongst its accolades, it is the longest-running sitcom, animated series and scripted prime-time series. We are amused by the clever catch phrases, Marge’s piled-high blue hair and Homer’s hapless, yet boundless, commitment to “the boy, the girl and the baby.”

During its 28-year run, to date, we have come to know and care about the rag-tag cast of characters – their flaws, insight and machinations. Each plays a role as the relational drama, wrapped in more than a dollop of slapstick, unfolds neatly in less than 22 minutes. The beloved, but often ignored, patriarch of the clan is Abraham Jedediah “Abe” Simpson II – mostly called Grandpa.

Abe once remarked, “I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now, what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you.”

Aside from getting a quick laugh and making a solid point, the old man has shared the secret of the longevity of the series (and perhaps of a happy life). It is ethereal. We cannot hope to contain it. We cannot expect to stand still and be on it. In fact, and by its very nature, it moves around. And, so what that it does? The elder Simpson, like the show itself, adapts as times change but doesn’t obsess over being too much it. The family is stable. The attire is identical. And the sofa, one of the longest-running gags in television, is still pushed against the wall. Is it what it’s cracked up to be?

Walkout not a trendy stunt

Editor, When I read about the planned school walkout on March 14, I was surprised by the negative online feedback. There were many opinions, but I think students should choose whether or not they want

to walk out. This is a bold move by Zionsville Community Schools. This has started a debate online that I wanted to address as a sixth-grader. This is not just a trendy stunt — it is about trying to save lives.

Walkout demonstrates democracy’s power Editor, The movement to put in sensible gun control policies that began with high school students is spreading. On March 14, schools across the country joined forces for a 17-minute school walkout in memory of the victims from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The walkout and march planned for March 24 demonstrate the power of our democracy and our Constitution.

We all have a voice and an obligation to be active participants in our country. Do all students know what is at stake? Could they all face a news reporter and answer with the same conviction and eloquence of the high schoolers from Parkland?

Discussions that took place at home and

in the classrooms about what this movement is all about and how it parallels similar movements from our history help build students’ critical thinking skills.

I don’t want to dismiss anyone’s right to peacefully protest; I just want to make sure we are not minimizing the power of this process. Students at the high school level will be voting — and their activism will be an integral part of their decisions on which candidates to select that best represent their beliefs and aspirations for peace and justice and equality. They are a powerful force with whom to reckon! Middle schoolers: keep studying and talking and listening as your constructive activism evolves.

We’ve been hit! The 2018 plague has finally reached the Wilson abode, and though I’m apparently immune, the HUMOR mental strain of dealing with a sick kid has taken a toll (how long ‘til spring break?)

Two weeks ago, the nurse from Tiny Dancer’s school called and left a cryptic voicemail: “Your daughter is running a lowgrade fever. She’s been asleep for an hour but we don’t want to check her again in case she’s over 100.” If a student records higher than that, they cannot return to school for at least 24 hours. God bless her, the nurse didn’t want to be responsible for my youngest missing more class time than was necessary.

We skipped the pediatrician (who’d just say it’s viral and to drink lots of fluids) and treated her flu-like symptoms at home with ibuprofen and Sunny D. TD recovered and made it another 10 days before she was struck down again. When the thermometer reached nearly 103, I hauled her to the nearest MinuteClinic, where she tested negative for both flu and strep, though even the nurse practitioner wasn’t sure she had “gotten good swabs.” This was when I made a fatal error: I went online.

According to the stupid internet, TD could have anything from mono to Lyme disease, but if it was undetected strep, my baby was at risk for rheumatic fever and possible heart failure. For two nights, I lie awake wondering if an ER run was in our future, so I finally made an appointment with the doctor, who looked at me and said, “It’s viral; drink lots of fluids.”

I need spring break. Peace out.

Don’t ask me, ask Siri

I’m doing Kegels right now. I’m supposed to do 50 per day. When my doctor suggested I do them following a HUMOR medical procedure, I was not familiar with these particular exercises. My wife knew what they were.

My sister knew, too. Heidi, my proofreader, was surprised to learn that men can do them. And I’m surprised … that this newspaper published this column.

I hesitated to write about doing Kegels after Mary Ellen and I discussed that I might have to include some private parts of my life (I think this is where I’m supposed say, “No pun intended”).

Kegels are a type of pelvic-floor exercise.

If you are a guy and are clueless about them, as I was, please look it up. I would explain exactly how to do them in this column, but I was even embarrassed when the doctor gave me the instructions in his office (I’ll wait while you ask Siri. Otherwise, the rest of this column will make no sense). By the way, Siri will definitely know what Kegels are. All women do.

While we’re watching a TV show or going somewhere in the car, Mary Ellen asks, “Are

you doing your exercises?” I always say “Yes.” It’s so easy to lie about this, compared to when I say things like, “Yes, dear, I know it looks like I’m napping, but I’m really on the treadmill.”

This daily regimen is simpler than the exercises required after my knee surgery.

During those physical therapy sessions, I would be groaning in pain, twisting my leg into places it didn’t want to go. But you wouldn’t know I was doing a Kegel exercise, although the other night at dinner Mary Ellen asked, “You’re doing your exercises right now, aren’t you?”

“Why, am I breathing heavily?”

“No, but your voice went up two octaves.”

This morning, I told Mary Ellen I had already exceeded the required number. She gave me a big hug as I walked out the door and said, “Good for you. You are the King of Kegels.”

“I am the King,” I said, “and right now my pelvis is leaving the building.”

“We’ve done this annually, and the plan is to invite a variety of local groups to help boost environmental awareness and build an understanding and appreciation for natural landscapes, waterways and greenways,” she said. “Environmentally conscious consumers can really have engaging conversations with those exhibitors and learn a lot more about the products or services or causes those exhibitors are passionate about.”

In the past, exhibitors have provided tree saplings to attendees to take home.

I think that’s what the Earth Day celebration really represents, giving back to nature and all things green and providing consumers news to take home and help the environment.”

Mix it up this spring Commentary by Amanda Snider Every spring we receive an influx of customers ready to tackle a decorating project.

DECORATING The most common complaint I hear from our clients is that they love the eclectic look but aren’t confident as to how to achieve it. They complain that when they try to mix different styles and patterns, it tends to look more like a hodgepodge mess from Dr. Seuss as opposed to very chic.

The reality is that it is a little more work to get this look. It’s definitely easier to walk into FurnitureLand USA and buy a 13-piece brown living room set, but that’s just not you, is it?

The new rule is there are no rules. Your home should be a reflection of your personality. The only guideline to have in the back of your mind? Scale. The truth is, you can mix almost anything if the scale is right.

It’s easy to put different patterns together, too, as long as they vary in scale. Mixing stripes, plaids, polka dots, damasks and more is a piece of cake and adds personality to your room. You also can mix different wood tones; in fact, it’s pretty boring if you

don’t. Take a cue from the pros. It’s no coincidence that you’ll see that many designers are now showcasing the kitchen island as a different color and even different material than the cabinets. Many times upper cabinets are different color/finish than lowers, and chairs are a different finish from their dining table partner.

The same is true of mixing all types of metal finishes. Gone are the days of brushed nickel on every knob, handle, hinge and fixture. Ladies, remember how freeing it was the first time you wore gold and silver jewelry...at the same time?

After all, home decor is a lot like fashion.

Neutrals don’t count as colors, either, so don’t worry about mixing those. Mixing different textures and layering them also creates visual interest. Fur pillows, shag rugs and luxurious throws are an easy way to accomplish this polished look.

Take some risks. Make your space your own and surround yourself with the things you love. It’s all part of you and your history.

Noel’s life painted in Canales Project song

By Heather Lusk editorial@youarecurent.com Zionsville’s Nancy Noel, nationally recognized for her art, is being recognized for her humanitarian work with ART a song.

Noel is among 20 women, including former Michelle Obama and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, being honored by The Canales Project’s ‘“Hear Her Song,” recognizing women’s achievements and courageous life choices through songs written about each individual.

The music was first presented March 18 in Washington, D.C. A second performance is scheduled for May 19 in San Jose, Calif.

Although Noel hadn’t heard the song prior to the concert, she was excited at the prospect. In December, she was among three women highlighted in a documentary, “Women Like Us,” which centered on the schools Noel built in Africa. She hopes hearing the song will be similar to her experience seeing the documentary for the first time.

“It was such a good feeling. It was inspirational,” Noel said. “It’s the power of one person just saying, ‘This is what I’m going to do.’ Even though you don’t have an exact direction, you can’t see the future, you just put one foot in front of the other.”

To create the song, The Canales Project organizers asked the women selected to complete a questionnaire about their lives. The first question, “Have you ever felt … alienated from the rest of society?” surprised Noel, who began to consider whether there was commonality between women who want to help others.

“I wondered whether people who have gone out into the world and made a difference in the world or reached out on their own, (whether) they were feeling some sort of pain in their past that brought them to wanting to help other people,” Noel said.

Noel battled “severe dyslexia” as a child and said she was taunted by teachers as her parents were told she would never amount to anything. She said she believes that anyone facing a learning disability

“It’s not a disability, there’s a gift there,” she said.

Her parents helped her pursue a love for art and she spent summers at a lake, where she excelled at skiing and sailing, away from academics.

“It really saved my life,” she said.

Noel also dreamed of Africa as a child, even though she’d never been there.

When she finally visited for the first time, she said it felt like a home away from home.

Visiting a small town on the shore of Lake Victoria, she saw children impacted

by AIDS and knew she needed to help.

“I knew it was the right thing to start helping those kids,” she said.

Noel started by helping establish a preschool in 1999 and eventually a kindergarten. She raised funds to build a brick school and soon will work with Engineers without Borders to supply drinking water to the entire community.

She hopes others will realize it’s never too late to make a difference.

“It just takes one person to do it,” she said. “I don’t have any regrets about the way I’ve lived my life.”

Fifth-grader gets her ‘Tomorrow’

By Heather Lusk editorial@youarecurent.com Claire Kauffman has portrayed other orphans in three previous productions of the musical “Annie.” Now, she’s MUSICAL getting her chance to play the title role.

“I’ve watched ‘Annie’ for a long time, and now I finally get to actually be the character,” said Kauffman, who will join a cast of 73 fifth- and sixth-graders at Zionsville Middle School.

This is the first time the school’s musical, set for March 23-24, is limited to two grades. The seventh- and eighth-grade students performed a fall play and will assist the younger students backstage for “Annie.”

“It gives the fifth- and sixth-graders more opportunities to be able to have those lead roles,” said choral director Ali Moody, who is directing the middle school’s musical with her husband, Jordan.

Having the chance to direct ‘Annie Jr.’ means a lot to Moody, who was in the show as a child and feels the story, set during The Great Depression, is a great way to introduce American history to students.

“It’s always been near and dear to my heart,” Moody said.

The junior version of “Annie” has shorter songs and omits a few scenes to be more accessible to younger students. Learning a different version of the show is among the challenges facing Kauffman, who was ready to dive into the role.

“She’s so intuitive about who Annie is,” Moody said. “It never takes her a moment to think about it, she’s just right in. That, I find you can’t teach very quickly.”

The show is at ZMS March 23 at 7 p.m. and March 24 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Honoring a Sufi saint in northern India

Commentary by Don Knebel Fatehpur Sikri is one of northern India’s most visited sites. Its most popular building honors a 16th-century TRAVEL saint.

Akbar, considered the greatest ruler in India’s history because of his military prowess and religious tolerance, became the third Mughal Emperor in 1556 at age 13, with his capital in Agra. Akbar soon captured a large portion of north central India but lacked an heir. In about 1568, Akbar traveled to Sikri, a village 22 miles west of Agra, where he consulted Sheikh Salim Chishti, a Sufi Muslim mystic, in his cave.

Sheikh Salim told Akbar that he would soon have a son. A short time later, Akbar’s wife, Mariam-uz-Zamani, gave birth to a boy in Sikri, whom they named Salim, who, as Jahangir, became the fourth Mughal Emperor.

In gratitude, Akbar built a magnificent walled city around Sheikh Salim’s cave. The city, named Fatehpur Sikri, included a large mosque just inside its enormous southern gate. Akbar moved his imperial capital to Fatehpur Sikri in 1571.

After Sheikh Salim died in 1572, Akbar built a 350-foot by 440-foot mausoleum for

Salim near the north end of the courtyard of Fatehpur Sikri’s mosque. Unlike the sandstone buildings of the rest of the city, the mausoleum was constructed of polished white marble featuring intricately carved screens on the walls. Sheikh Salim’s tomb rested under a dome in the center of the building. Later, Mughal buildings, including the Taj Mahal, drew on aspects of Salim’s mausoleum.

Akbar abandoned Fatehpur Sikri as his capital in 1585 and the entire city was soon

deserted. But even today, the entire city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is remarkably well preserved. Visitors to Sheikh Salim’s tomb tie threads to the inside of the marble screens, hoping to persuade the nowfamous Sufi saint to grant them a miracle.

All about myself Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt As I write this, I’m sitting by myself. For those of you who love being alone in silence, let me let you in on an GRAMMAR GUY introvert pro tip: Hang out in the periodical room at your library. You’ll either be alone or with (at most) three other people reading today’s newspaper (because they were too cheap to pay for a subscription).

I enjoy being by myself. But the word “myself” gets misused more and more as a result of well-meaning people who are unknowingly over-correcting their grammar.

Here’s an example I hear often: If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, feel free to call Adam, Larry or myself. How would you write this without Adam or Larry in the sentence? You wouldn’t say “...feel free to call myself.” You’d say “...feel free to call me.” Now, if you throw back in Adam and Larry, this doesn’t change. “If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, feel free to call Adam, Larry or me.”

You see, myself is a reflexive pronoun.

Others include yourself, herself, himself and itself. These words are never subjects of a sentence; they’re always objects. If

you want a good way to remember this, think about when you look down to gaze deeply into the water of a placid pond and you see your reflection in it. Your inner dialog would say something like, “I see myself in the water.” In the same way you see a reflection of yourself in the water, words like yourself are reflexive pronouns.

Other than using myself as an object, when should you use myself? Use myself when you are both the subject and the object of the sentence: I can see myself spending more time in the periodical room.

Here, you’re the object of your own action.

Also, use myself to add emphasis to a statement: I myself locked the door so no one else could get in. Or how about: I wrote this all by myself. In both sentences, you could omit myself and the sentence would still make sense.

I encourage you to spend some time to be by yourself; hopefully, you’ll enjoy the company.

Facilitate at least one support group for teens (ages 13-18), which may include primary and secondary victims of family violence and/or sexual assault. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Center.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.
