Women eat in to help reach out

By Liz Schrader • news@currentzionsville.com Once a month, a group of women meet at a home in Zionsville for a potluck dinner, bringing a dish for everyone to share.

But this isn’t your typical book club or girl’s night dinner. The women are part of the Zionsville chapter of Dining for Women, a group that gets together to share in a potluck meal, and the money they would have spent eating at a restaurant is donated to programs empowering women worldwide.

“It’s not about the money. It’s about collective giving and the information you’re learning about the charity,” said Liz Qua, the leader for the Zionsville chapter of Dining for Women. “We’ve helped girls in Afghanistan go to school and learned about midwives in Haiti that are trying to reduce the fetal mortality rate.”

Each month, the national organization of Dining for Women chooses a grassroots, global charity to which the money raised by the 400 active worldwide chapters will go. No matter what day a chapter meets, all the money raised throughout the month goes to the designated charity.

“It’s a cool idea because your $10 can actually make a difference since it’s getting lumped with someone else’s,” Qua said.

Qua said she got involved with the organization through her sister, who belongs to a chapter in California, and started the Zionsville chapter last April. It is the sec-

ond of its kind in Indiana. The Zionsville chapter has 25 members, and Qua said they have raised $3,000 in their first year.

According to Qua, both men and women of all ages are welcome to join the group. Each month, a different member signs up to host the meeting or present information about the nonprofit featured that month. The presentation includes an informational video, as well as a PowerPoint presentation, quiz or game to learn more about the featured organization and country of origin. After the presentation, there’s a group discussion, and Qua said they’ve had a lot of powerful feedback

from members.

“It’s the power that moves. Most people will throw in around $10, but some people might throw in $100 if they’re really taken by the charity. Some people can’t afford to give anything, and that’s fine too,” she said. “It’s about empowering people to realize they’re making a difference.”

Schultz earned the award in 1961, but never received it. To earn his award, Schultz was required to survive for seven days in a deep forest with only a knife, flint for starting fires, a compass and clothing. Fixing the TV is less hazardous Commentary by Ward Degler A technician came out to fix our TV last week.

He attached a gizmo to the whatchamacallit that plugs into the back of the set. Then he plugged in a doodad with a dial on it, made some adjustments, unplugged everything and left.

Job done.

Most TV sets back in the dark ages of my youth were black and white.

The good news was, you could fix them yourself. Remove the vacuum tubes, trot down to the hardware store, check them out on a handy testing machine, replace the bad ones, and, voila, we were back in business.

The tough part was adjusting the antenna. The early sets called for installing a spidery network of tubing on the roof, and then turning it a fraction of an inch at a time while someone down below monitored the picture and called out directions.

The biggest risk here was falling off the roof.

A more sophisticated version had an electric motor that turned the antenna from the comfort of your living room. This was a major

improvement since every TV station had its own antenna setting. If you didn’t have the motormounted version, you had to be satisfied with setting reception for the station you watched the most, and then enduring the others through static and snow.

The solution to that came a few years later with rabbit ears, a whippy system of metal rods that attached to the back of the set. As you switched channels, you adjusted the rabbit ears.

For weak signals, you added aluminum foil to the rods which extended their reach.

It was a kind of audience participation style of entertainment back then. We controlled our own destiny.

Nowadays, we just call for a guy with a gizmo and a doodad. Of course, we don’t fall off the roof anymore, either.

School Board Recap – March 11 What happened? Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees voted unanimously to take the final steps needed to establish an elementary school community at Boone Meadow School.

What’s next? Boone Meadow Elementary is expected to begin operation in fall 2013 with about 400 students. When combined with the district’s preschool, the building will be operating at 72 percent of capacity. The move will reduce the student population at Stonegate Elementary School and move the school from 110 percent of capacity this year to approximately 84 percent of capacity next year.

What it means: The Board set the boundaries for the school, approved hiring a principal and endorsed a plan to let students who will be fourth-graders in the next school year stay at Stonegate Elementary if they choose to do so. Residents in the areas of Anson, Eagle’s Nest and the new neighborhoods of Blackstone and Maple Grove will attend Boone Meadow Elementary School. School officials expect the Boone Meadow Elementary population to grow rapidly given the high level of new home construction in all of these areas.

What happened? The board conducted a public hearing and then authorized the refunding of the 2004 pension bonds.

What it means: The refunding is expected to lower the interest rate from 6.02 percent to approximately 2.6 percent.

This is projected to save more than $100,000 per year for eight years for a total projected savings of $878,000 after the costs of reissuing the bonds.

What’s next? There would be no change to the term of the bonds. The savings from this refinancing should lower the overall tax rate in those years by approximately ½ cent.

What happened? First reading on school handbook changes What it means: Principals from each level presented their proposed changes to the district’s handbooks for the next school year.

Pet supplies store opens

By Janelle Morrison • news@currentinzionsville.com Speck’s Pet Supplies has opened its seventh store which is its first to serve the Zionsville and west Carmel communities. This locally and family owned company has six other locations in the greater metropolitan area including Anderson, Brownsburg, Greenwood and Geist.

Another store will open in Fishers in April.

“Our newest pet nutrition center has already been enjoying a welcome response from the Carmel and Zionsville communities,” Mike Floyd, the store’s manager, said.

Speck’s has been serving the Indianapolis area for more than 20 years. The name of the store came from the founder’s champion hunting dog named Speck.

The store specializes in dog and cat nutrition and carries a wide selection of foods, treats, baked goods and supplies to meet a variety of pet needs. Speck’s has many foods that address special needs such as weight, allergy, breed specific and age related issues. It also stocks an extensive selection of holistic and organic brands.

Mary Ann Dalton, Speck’s marketing and special projects manager, explained that being customer centric is what makes the store different from its competition.

Police seek bank robbers

news@currentzionsville.com At publication time, the Zionsville Police Dept. was still searching for two suspects who robbed the Key Bank on Michigan Road and 116th Street on March 11 around 11:05 a.m.

Police report that the bank was robbed by two masked African-American armed males who demanded money and then fled the bank on foot. A stolen gray Ford Taurus was recovered a short distance away.

Key Bank officials would not comment on the incident.

Area teens turn their love of sports into a humanitarian mission

By Liz Schrader • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville High School junior Madi Mann and senior Claire Poindexter are passionate about soccer. They have played the sport as long as they can remember and spent a large part of their adolescent and teen years on the field.

This year they found a way to combine their passion for soccer and love for serving others by leading a group of Zionsville high school students and parents on a spring break mission trip to Haiti; a trip that has grown in involvement from four to 36 people in just one year.

The girls will act as student leaders for the group of 29 students and seven adults as they travel to Haiti from March 29 to April 5 to do mission work and build a sporting complex in a town just outside Port-au-Prince.

The complex will sit on two acres of land that was donated to the group by a local Haitian mission and will consist of three soccer fields, a volleyball court and a baseball field. Once finished, the students will put on a three-day sports camp for up to 450 Haitian children.

To help offset the cost of the trip, the ZHS students held a sneaker collection fundraiser in February and March, encouraging local elementary school students to donate old shoes. Pleasant View Elementary, Stone Gate Elementary and Middle Schools, and Union Elementary School all participated, collecting 2,000 shoes for the cause.

The Haiti mission trip was the brainchild of Mann, who traveled to the country as an eighthgrader and was impacted by what she saw.

“Once I left Haiti, I immediately knew I wanted to go back,” she said. “There are no paved roads or stoplights, but the kids’ happiness is immeasurable. You can’t imagine kids who have nothing being so happy.”

organization that focuses on helping youth use sports as a way to serve the community while building character and leadership qualities. {I’m In} has served as a sponsor of the trip, helping the students with logistics such as traveling to and from Haiti and safety precautions, but Poindexter said that once there, the high schoolers will take the reins and lead all the mission work, while the adults will act as a support system.

Poindexter said he thinks that student involvement with the trip has grown because of the strong impact the mission work had on the returning ZHS students.

“We had around 20 new kids that wanted to go this year. They said they could tell the group that went last year came back and was different; that they were somehow more real, and they had changed for the better,” he said.

In 2012 there were 10 returning students that participated in the mission trip: All 10 wanted to go back to Haiti again this year.

Student team leader Claire Poindexter said she wanted to return because she felt she had unfinished business to take care of.

“For me, serving is a passion. Through service you get different perspectives on the world and yourself. You learn your purpose is not about you; it’s about what you can do for other people. I wanted to go back to create more of a lasting impact.”

Both Madi and Claire have participated in {I’m In} Coaching Best, and Claire has been involved with the organization since its creation by her father and three of his friends in 2008.

In addition to the Haiti trip, {I’m in} provides service opportunities in Indianapolis throughout the school year. They work primarily with Indianapolis Public School 96; a school that Poindexter says is 85-percent Hispanic with students from 21 different countries of origin.

For the past two summers, around 40 Indianapolis-area high school students and coaches volunteered with {I’m In} to put on a soccer camp for hundreds of IPS 96 students, many whom Poindexter says have never played on a real field before “We did our first camp two years ago and set up the fields. For many of the IPS 96 kids, it was the first time they had played on a field with painted lines. That’s something we really take for granted here,” he said.

While {I’m In} is only putting on one Haiti trip this year, Poindexter said they hope to plan four mission trips next year during ZHS’s spring, summer, fall and winter breaks.

“Each year we hope to get more people involved, but for now we have a great start,” he said.

• Outreach: The spring break mission trip to Haiti and an after-school tutoring program at IPS 96 on 38th Street. Students from ZHS, Cathedral and Covenant Christian volunteer at IPS 96 twice a week after school to tutor and play soccer. We also started a summer soccer camp two years ago for kids at IPS 96 and the surrounding neighborhoods. ZHS soccer coaches are also involved with the camp.

• Why Soccer? Around the world, soccer is a universal language. In the five-block area surrounding IPS 96 there are about 70 countries represented in total that are immigrants, and they all play soccer. The equipment is also very minimal.

• What’s In Store? There is an adult leader on this trip from Cincinnati who is planning a high school mission trip to Haiti next year. We’d like to expand our trips to Spanish-speaking countries in Central America. We also are planning a coaching conference in the future.

Indianapolis has come a long way from Indy-no-place thanks to the tireless work of the tourism and hospitality community, city leaders, planners and welcoming residents.

A family affair

As humans on this planet, we should all care about character. It helps keep us from killing each other, to be sure. But more importantly, it expects that we pay for our own consumption, that we care for our own offspring, that we help those who can’t help themselves and that we respect the rights and desires of others to do the same. Yet, character all too often seems to get precious little attention.

In fact, modern dictionaries tend to list character as a set of distinctive traits rather than a more traditional reading that would associate the word with especially positive qualities.

So, how does one hope to teach it? Is it even something that is able to be instilled by training? Or, must it come from within the person who exhibits it? Most likely, character must be modeled if we hope to pass the quality on to our subsequent generations.

The small town of Sheridan boasts many who lead by example. Among them is the

family behind the Biddle Memorial Foundation. Brian Myers, a decedent of the founder and board member of the trust, remembers the generosity of his parents and grandparents even as he helps guide the philanthropic vision of the family’s giving today. It’s not easy.

There are always more requests than resources.

Everybody has a favorite project. The need is great. Fortunately, character doesn’t expect perfection, but it only demands determination. This month, the family, along with local business JBS United, committed to the creation of The Sheridan Fund, administered by the Legacy Fund, Hamilton County’s Community Foundation, to work for the benefit of the historic village. To me, this is an example to follow.

Granted, the union environment often is counterproductive to customer service and the chance at longevity for the USPS, but the Republicans of the last decade foisted this upon all of us. We’ve taken our share of shots at the shoddy business practices at the USPS, but that with which Donahoe has been encumbered defies logic, just as Moran’s demand to retain Saturday delivery in the face of mounting deficits does.

Luckily, everything came out fine Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ll get right to the bottom of things. My husband had his first colonoscopy the other day, and all I kept thinking as I sat in the anxietyfilled waiting room was They’re like lambs being lead to the slaughter, but in a funny, less morbid, kind of way.

See, Doo has a strong family history of colon cancer and a brother who is a gastro-intestinal physician. Both of these resulted in his being scheduled for a screening far earlier than the recommended 50 years of age. So we got our insurance in line, made the appointment, and looked forward to the pre-op insanity. At least I was looking forward to it. Watching Doo chug four laxative cocktails and waste an evening on the john was the perfect antidote to my stilllingering bitterness over the dog acquisition.

Even better, he couldn’t eat anything but fat-free chicken broth and non-red popsicles from 5 p.m. onward.

And because he was to be heavily sedated, I had to tag along to receive the good/bad news and to drive him home. As compensation, I was allowed to bear witness to this truly unique post-op recovery ward atmosphere. I say “ward” because Doo was literally brought back to a large “holding facility” with eight beds cordoned off only by curtains. I heard everything on either side of us and across the way.

Most noteworthy, I was entitled to the distinkt pleasure (?) of hearing complete strangers pass gas – both disgusting and hilarious at the same time. For those of you unfamiliar with the process, a colonoscopy victim must expel the air that was used to make room for the scope before he or she is discharged. Patients are instructed to toot as forcefully and as often as then can, earning the coveted Brown Star when they exceed expectations. So while I’m trying to act mature and calm and understand what the physician is saying, I’ve got a scantily-clad Doo mumbling incoherently about Qdoba while earning his star in record time and a cacophony of varioustoned blasts reverberating around me. Is it any wonder I couldn’t stop giggling? That’s potty humor at its best, people.

Luckily, Doo was fine, though the doc did remove some polyps that might otherwise have become cancerous down the road. I, on the other hand, may be permanently scarred. While Doo remembers nothing, I will forever hold vivid images of the packed waiting room of geriatrics whom I later heard star in a surprisingly accurate scene from Blazing Saddles. Peace out.

Current celebrates first anniversary Commentary by Julie Osborne It has been an exciting ride since Current in Zionsville launched one year ago today. Current Publishing first was introduced in Carmel in October 2006, and it now includes circulation of 105,749 households in Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, and Zionsville. As the managing editor of Current in Zionsville since the Dec. 11, 2012 edition, I have enjoyed making connections while wandering around town.

You have been welcoming and friendly with positive comments ... for the most part. By the way, I like the feedback so keep it coming, positive or constructive, so we can continue to grow and meet your needs.

Along with the, “We love your little newspaper,” and,“It’s great to have another option in town,” one repeating theme I have heard since I started reporting last August goes something like this: “We want more Zionsville news,” or “There’s too much Carmel in it.” Although we do repurpose material that we believe reaches across the Michigan Road boundary and is relevant to you I have been working to make your paper a true Zionsville paper. Grant winners will teach classes

Four members of the Hamilton County Artists Association are recipients of teaching grants from Nickel Plate Arts Initiative and will offer four hours of beginning art instruction. The HCAA members selected include Mike Janosky, oils; Robin Peet, acrylics; Rodney Reveal, watercolors; and Penny Roberson, oils.

“The grant stipulates that instructors will teach two, two-hour classes with the purpose of introducing various artistic media,” said HCAA member Ken Bloomhorst. “All materiPeet als for the class will be provided as part of the grant.”

Bloomhorst said classes begin later this month and continue through May. “Entitled ‘Try It… You’ll Like It’ the group of classes is designed to Roberson give an introduction to painting in several different ways. The hope is that this taste of art will encourage people to continue on their artistic journey,” he said.

Classes include: Easy Oil Painting with Penny Roberson Janosky – Penny Roberson’s two classes are designed to learn from the masters and problem-solve painting techniques. Then, with this information, students will copy another painting of their choosing. The first class “Hello, Van Gogh!” will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on March 28. The second class, “Hello, Monet!” will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on April 25. Cost is $20 per session.

Easy Watercolor with Rodney Reveal – “Dive in to Watercolors” will be demonstrated

by Rodney Reveal with sessions on April 23 and 30. Both classes will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

All supplies will be provided by the instructor and step by step demos will be given. Cost is $20 per session.

27. The first half of the session will show fun and easy techniques in watercolors. Roberson will guide the parents and children to feel comfortable with that medium. After a short lunch break, the children will be introduced to the acrylic medium. Peet will offer a kid-friendly creation that will encourage further exploration in acrylics. The cost of the one-day class is $60 for one parent and a child.

Easy Acrylic Painting with Robin Peet – Peet invites beginners to “Unleash Your Creative Spirit with Acrylics!” Participants will produce two personal paintings: one involving a special photograph and the other exploring linear images and color. These will be offered in the evening to allow everyone an opportunity to attend.

Sessions run from 7 to 9 p.m. May 2 and 9.

Students will be asked only to bring a black and white or sepia photo. Cost is $20 per session.

Easy Oil Painting with Mike Janosky – Janosky will provide a casual and fun way for beginners to experience the feel of oil painting and explore the effective use of color. The sixcolor palette will be introduced and utilized in completing exercises and a finished piece. His two sessions are entitled “Beginning in Oil:

Color in the Landscape” and will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on May 6 and 13. Cost is $20 per session.

Civic launches ‘special’ youth program Commentary by Cheri Dick Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre is “special” in lots of ways besides the quality of the shows we produce.

Civic is the largest community theatre in Indiana, and one of the ten largest in America. Our theatre is concluding its 98th year of continuous operation. And for more than 40 years, we have offered young people (beginning in the important pre-school years) access to a year-round, theatre-based performing arts program. In fact, Jr. Civic’s educational workshops and outreach programs reach more than 15,000 youngsters annually.

All of these factors combine to make Civic Theatre a one-of-a-kind treasure in the state of Indiana.

The new program I am happy to tell you about connects Civic Theatre with the word “special” in even more meaningful ways. Jr. Civic’s premier touring troupe, named ACT ONE, consists of 30 young performers, ages seven to 14, who live in communities throughout Central Indiana. ACT ONE was established to provide youth with the opportunity to strive for artistic excellence while developing poise, self-confidence, creative resourcefulness and important communication skills.

This spring, every ACT ONE performer will pair with a Special Olympics athlete of a similar age to rehearse and eventually perform a musical theatre program during the Indiana State Special Olympic Games in Terre Haute on June 8.

And then in September, a reunion performance will take place during the International Arts Festival in Carmel. In addition, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre will host the Special Olympics of Hamilton County Award Ceremony at our very own state-ofthe-art Tarkington Theatre.

The value of community service is a lesson taught to the members of ACT ONE throughout the year. But this collaboration with the Special Olympics takes the concept of community service to a whole new level.

It not only will provide a unique performing arts opportunity for Special Olympics athletes, enhancing their essential life skills, but it also will promote compassion and understanding among ACT ONE participants.

It’s a WIN-WIN program for everyone!

Each concussion is unique Commentary by Gary Chumbley I am routinely asked about concussion prevention and treatments, and with March being Brain Injury Awareness Month, I thought I would share some of the most common misconceptions and facts about traumatic brain injuries.

Many people are familiar with the new concussion law that went into effect July 1 of last year. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain works. While many are caused by a direct hit to the head, some may be caused by an indirect hit to the body.

Symptoms are not always obvious. They can be subtle, such as headache, light-headedness or feeling sluggish, and they can take 48 to 72 hours after the injury to appear. A concussion can occur without loss of consciousness. Even if symptoms are subtle and only last a short time, it is still considered a concussion.

CT scans and MRIs are not always performed because they are typically normal after sustaining a concussion. Recovery from a concussion varies from person to person, and children and teens typically recover at a much slower rate than adults. Around 80 percent of concussed people recover within seven to 14 days, while 20 percent

can take up to six months or longer to recover.

There are also misconceptions about sporting equipment and concussion prevention. While helmets do help to reduce the risk of fractures and severity of head trauma, they don’t do much to prevent concussions. Mouth guards also do not prevent concussions. They only protect your teeth and reduce the risk of mouth fractures. If there is a question on whether or not a player has a concussion, it’s best to follow the saying, “When in doubt, sit them out.” A player should return to play only after being symptom-free and assessed by a medical professional.

Research suggests that for every concussion, a person is one to two times more likely for a second, two to four times more likely for a third, and three to nine times more likely for a fourth. Remember that no two concussions are the same, and each one should be treated individually.

Clothing drive a success

By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com Last week, Shepherd Insurance, Lincoln Financial Group and donors from across Central Indiana completed a successful clothing drive.

Donations were gathered throughout February and the first two weeks of March. All types of clothing and shoes were accepted.

The donations will be given to those in need of clothing at O’Connor House, Holy Family Shelter, Wheeler Mission and Indianapolis Pub-

lic Schools. Additionally, flyers will be sent out seeking any families who are in need. Families will be able to come to Good Hall on the campus of University of Indianapolis on April 14 and pick out clothing, free of charge.

“Maybe this will prevent a child from being segregated due to being homeless or coming from a poverty stricken family or will help one less child be bullied due to the clothes they wear,” said Sue Johnson, a representative of Lincoln Financial Group.

We lost our precious daughter, Sydney Elaine Campbell on December 28, 2011 in a auto related accident on 86th Street. She had just graduated from Aveda Fredric Institute on April 28, 2011; her 19th birthday and worked at Aveda at Keystone at the Crossing.

Remodel creates interest upon approach Commentary by Larry Greene Creeping out from under the cold layer of winter into spring’s renewal is a rite of passage every year. As the warmer weather brings you outside, it may be time to take a discerning look at your home’s curb appeal. This homeowner did just that, and decided she was ready for a change.

Original Design: This west Carmel home, located in the Crooked Stick neighborhood, was built in the 1980s. The current homeowners have been in the house for 17 years. “When we originally bought the house, it had Tudor details without being a Tudor-style home,” the homeowner said. “When we removed those bits about five years ago, the house became very plain. We tried to make the look work, but we decided we needed to dress it up.” The narrow walkway and small, dark entry porch were not particularly welcoming or noticeable.

Design Process: The goal of the project was to give the house character and presence. Set far back on the lot, the homeowners wanted the home to be more impactful from the street. The design was created to have the home become more and more interesting the closer you moved toward it. Two main elements were incorporated into the final design: an expansive walkway and

large yet cozy front porch.

The wide entry walkway serves as a focal point to welcome visitors as soon as they get out of their car. The lighted, stone pillars with limestone caps, which match the side block and porch base, cue visitors to the location of the new double front door. The texture of the flagstone serves as a transition from the existing asphalt driveway to the brushed concrete porch.

Timber-frame architecture influenced the front porch design, but the main goal was to complement the existing look of the home.

Double cedar columns and exposed beams draw the eye from the driveway. As one comes up the walkway and on to the porch, smaller details

like the cedar trim on the posts and the triple brackets above the pillars, are noticeable. Partially enclosing the covered porch with newel posts and cedar rails and spindles makes the space feel like a cozy room. By adding brackets under the eaves, the design of the new porch is tied to the rest of the home.

Color choice was centered on extending this cohesive look. The variegated flagstone used on the walkway and pillars compliment the home’s brick siding. The main paint color compliments the stones, while the trim color helps to pop the architectural details.

Final Result: While before the non-descript architecture was easy to ignore, the new entryway completely transformed the look of the home, making it impossible to forget. The homeowner is proud to welcome her guests. “I wanted people’s blood pressure to drop when they approached our house,” she said. “Our home is so inviting now that I think we have achieved that goal.”
