2 departments plan to move

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com As several town departments prepare to move across a parking lot to a new town hall building this fall, town news two others could move across town in three to four years.

The Zionsville Town Council approved a resolution March 6 to purchase two parcels of land on S 875 East that are expected to be the future home for the streets and parks departments. Currently, those departments share a 31,000-square-foot building with the Zionsville Police Dept. at 1075 Parkway Dr. “The growth of the town could not accommodate those departments as we move forward,” Mayor Tim Haak told the council.

“They are at maximum capacity as we speak.

They are storing equipment outside, which is exposed to the elements.”

Officials determined the easiest plan of action was to move the streets and parks

departments and allow ZPD to expand into the entire building. Haak said ZPD won’t have any trouble utilizing the additional space.

“The need (for more room) is really, really close right now, especially with some of the new hires,” Haak said. ZPD plans to add seven officers and an administrative assistant in the next three years.

The parcels, at 4102 and 4140 S 875 East, are near Heritage Trail Park. One was formerly home to Rail Trail Gardens Event Center. The other is an associated residential property. They total approxiHaak mately 12 acres and are adjacent to an additional 13 acres already owned by the town.

Town officials said storage buildings on the sites will be used immediately after the sale to store street and park department equipment. Additional facilities might be constructed in the future to house department offices.

The town expects to develop a land plan to guide future use of the property.

Final costs have not been determined, but Haak said the average of two appraisals for the properties was approximately $757,000.

Former dog day care owner under investigation

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville police are investigating the former owner of For the Dogs day care for allegedly secretly filming a female employee in the bathroom with a public safety cellphone hidden inside of a first aid bag.

Zionsville Police Dept. Capt. Charles White said the Boone County prosecutor is reviewing the case against Ray Bridges, known by many Indianapolis Colts fans as the “tuba guy,” but that charges have not yet been filed. Police conducted a search at For the Dogs Feb. 17 and seized some of Bridges’

electronics.

Former employee Alexis Nelson said another employee discovered the cellphone and called police. She said Bridges admitted to secretly filming an employee and photoshopping the victim’s face onto pornographic images.

Bridges did not respond to an attempt to reach him for comment.

Nelson said the employees often referred to Bridges as their “crazy uncle” and trusted him like family. She said she was devastated to learn about the hidden camera.

“You feel very violated as a woman,” Nelson said. “The most difficult thing was that sense of a loss of safety. For a lot of us that was our sanctuary, our safe place.”

Nelson said all of the employees working at For the Dogs were female. She provided a letter from Bridges given to three of the employees Feb. 17, in which Bridges stated that only one of the employees was targeted.

In the letter, Bridges also stated that he had “a complete moral failure” and was seeking counseling for what he called a “sexual fantasy addiction.”

Nelson has since quit but said many of the employees have returned to For the Dogs, which is under new ownership. Despite the recent incident, Nelson said she thinks For the Dogs, 10617 Zionsville Rd., is a solid business and that the new owners have done a great job.

The Zionsville Town Council met March 6 to authorize the purchase of land to complete a pathway, pave the way for $2 million in infrastructure upgrades and consider parking restrictions on Clarkstone Road.

What happened: The council approved a resolution authorizing the purchase of land at 5929 S CR 700 East.

What it means: This parcel of land is the final piece needed to complete a pathway between Zionsville West Middle School and the Royal Run subdivision. The town is planning to purchase the entire parcel, which includes a residential property.

What’s next: The pathway project is expected to be constructed this summer.

What happened: The council approved two resolutions that pave the way to begin four transportation projects funded through the INDOT Community Crossings Matching Grant program.

What it means: In August 2016, the state announced that Zionsville would receive $1 million — that the town must match — to upgrade its infrastructure. The council action moved the town’s matching funds from the Special LOIT Fund into the Local Road and Bridge Matching Grant Fund and authorized the total $2 million to be spent on approved projects.

What’s next: The projects are a roundabout at Mulberry Street and Ford Road, reconstruction of Village Walk Drive, rehabilitation of part of the Ind. 334 corridor and rehabilitation of CR 975 E and Pleasantview Road. The projects are expected to go out for bid at the end of March with construction happening this summer.

What happened: The council held the first reading for an ordinance to restrict parking on certain portions of Clarkston Road in the Coventry Ridge subdivision.

What it means: Coventry Ridge residents asked the town to prohibit parking on Clarkston Road near the entrance of the neighborhood after contractors allegedly ignored requests to not park there.

What’s next: The council will vote on the ordinance after its second reading, which will likely take place at the March 20 meeting.

Zionsville resident Nicole Adams, who was in an accident near the intersection in June 2015 that broke her back, launched a Facebook page called Residents for a Safer 334/Oak Street after the 2015 fatality wreck. Her feelings about the new light are mixed.

She said she is glad the town has taken steps to address the problem, but she believes it should have worked toward

“The traffic light will certainly help the wait time of those traveling on (Kissel), but I am doubtful that it will decrease the amount of rear-end collisions that happen at the intersection,” Adams said. “In fact, I am concerned that the light may increase the number of these type of accidents. In my eyes, if you are going to do something, do it right the first time and you will save money in the long run.”

Giving up broccoli for Lent Commentary by Ward Degler What I remember about Lent when I was a kid was the Catholic kids spilling out of church on Ash Wednesday plain talk with black crosses on their foreheads. And their moaning and groaning about what they had to give up for Lent.

“Mom says it has to be chocolate. Why can’t I just give up broccoli?”

“Yeah? Well, I have to give up all desserts – and candy.”

“Man, I can’t wait til Easter.”

“Me, neither.”

Of course, when I became Catholic myself I learned all about Lent, the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert before his crucifixion.

I also discovered the significance of the number 40.

In Noah’s day it rained for 40 days and nights. The Hebrews spent 40 years wandering in the Wilderness before entering the Promised Land. Some biblical scholars contend they would have made the trek in 40 days had it not been for their obstinacy.

To make up for this, Moses prayed on the mountain for 40 days before receiving the Ten Commandments.

Lent itself is an old English word meaning “lengthening,” as in, it’s spring and the days are getting longer. Lent even has its own special color: purple, a color that signifies mourning (for our sinful nature) and royalty denoting Christ’s kingship.

While Lent itself may be tedious and same ol’, same ol’, what with giving up chocolate and all, what happens just before Lent is

anything but. Shrove Tuesday, aka Fat Tuesday, is virtually sprinkled with tradition.

Shrove comes from the term “shriving,” which is an early Christian tradition of confessing sins and receiving absolution on the last day before Lent. And, of course, there was the giving up of stuff for the 40 days before Easter.

What the early Christians gave up included meats, fats, eggs and milk. Since these were things that would not keep without spoiling for 40 days, every household had to get rid of them on Fat Tuesday.

Interestingly, this is where pancakes began. Add flour to fat, eggs and milk and you have (voila!) pancake batter. Add the cooked meat, and you’ve got a feast. Legend has it that somewhere during the 1400s, a housewife was busy cooking pancakes and lost track of time. While still cooking, she heard the church bells summoning the faithful to Lenten services. The story insists she raced to church still carrying the frying pan filled with pancakes. And this was the day the national pancake race was launched.

Fat Tuesday is an even bigger deal in New Orleans for Mardi Gras and in Rio de Janeiro for Carnival. Mardi Gras, by the way, is French for Fat Tuesday.

And me, I’m just going to give up broccoli.

Boone County officials discuss methods for battling rising opioid use

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Opiate use is on the rise in Indiana, and Boone County is no exception.

This year, Boone cover story County Sheriff Mike Nielsen launched a five-year plan, part of which focuses on education, prevention and enforcement to fight an epidemic on opioids, including heroin and prescription drugs codeine, Nielsen hydrocodone and oxycodone.

“We will make some progress in 2017, but I think we’ll see real progress after the implementation phase,” he said.

“The rubber’s going to hit the road in 2018.”

Nielsen was able to implement the plan after a .5 percent increase in local income tax was approved in October 2016, allowing the sheriff’s department to add corrections officers and mental health counselors to the staff effective March 1.

The tax increase will also support all of the county’s public safety organizations and will allow the addition of officer wellness programs to be rolled into the mental health plan, addressing how PTSD affects local law enforcement and other mental health needs.

Part of the plan is the addition of a drug interdiction team on the corridor between Indianapolis and Chicago.

Through this additional unit Nielsen hopes to prevent drugs coming into the county but said that one step won’t solve the issue.

“We can never arrest our way out of this problem,” he said.

People arrested for drug trafficking will now have a better chance to receive mental health treatment to prevent what Nielsen estimates is a 75 percent recidivism rate.

Without treatment, national opiate relapse rates hover around 90 percent, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Nielsen would like to ensure there is continuity of care

when inmates are released from jail.

“That hope that we give them when they’re here (through treatment) will be transitioned outside of the jail,” Nielsen said.

“When we fail the inmates is when they leave,” he said.

“We provide them hope inside, but when they leave they go right back to that element where they came from.

“We’ve got to stop that constant circle.

Otherwise we’re never going to get ahead of the game.”

U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks said that with proper intervention and treatment programs arrests of addicts can save their lives.

“It’s important that we have aggressive Brooks law enforcement involved with the dealers, however we really have learned over time we cannot arrest our way out of the problem,” she said.

Funding the treatment programs and finding people to staff them is a challenge that Brooks hopes to tackle this year.

“We can never arrest our way out of this problem” - mike nielsen “We do not have enough people trained in providing addiction counseling, behavior specialists. We just don’t have the workforce. It’s a national problem. We don’t have enough providers with the right kind of training to even staff these programs,” she said.

Brooks added that it’s going to take more than just the financial resources, and she encourages support for nonprofit organizations that run treatment programs.

Brooks said Mothers Against Drunk Driving has done a good job educating youth on the dangers of alcohol abuse but that attention is lacking for educating young people of the dangers of drug use and sharing prescription drugs.

Nielsen agrees that the education piece is very important but said schools are making strides in drug use prevention.

“We have to do a better job of getting into our schools, talking about drugs and how opiates affect families,” Nielsen said. “There are no socioeconomic differences when it comes to opiates.”

The Lebanon school system currently uses the national DARE program, while Zionsville Community Schools is

Lifesaving medication added to safety vehicles The effects of opioids can be deadly, impacting the part of the brain that regulates breathing.

Often the only way to revive a person who has stopped breathing because of an opiate overdose is with naloxone, a medication that can reverse the effects of these drugs.

Narcan, a brand of naloxone, was added to Zionsville police and fire department administrative vehicles in 2016 after previously being available only on the EMT ambulances.

“We’ve got to make sure that we continue to stock our naloxone,” Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen said.

“That needs to be in the toolkit or first aid kit just like an AED (defibrillator) does.”

Prior to 2014, only paramedics, nurses and advanced level providers were able to administer naloxone, but a change in state law now allows it to be administered by first responders through a nasal spray device. The medication in its intramuscular form can only be injected by advanced medical professionals, which is the preferred option with better effects at lower doses than the nasal option.

“It does take a little bit of time to get an IV established,” said Steve Gilliam, ZFD’s division chief of EMS. “If you’ve got somebody who’s not breathing to be able to administer that, we can do it nasally a lot quicker.”

Law enforcement in Boone County administered naloxone on more than 30 different occasions in 2016.

“We have been very fortunate in Zionsville that we haven’t had to deploy Narcan,” Gilliam said. “We’re trying to be proactive in carrying it on our administrative vehicles so that if we ever see that occurrence we’ll be prepared.” gathering a task force to establish a plan in the future.

“This is a national epidemic, not concentrated in a few states, but in fact sadly is a national problem,” Brooks said.

According to the CDC, more people in the United States died from prescription drug and heroin overdoses in 2014 than from car accidents.

Nielsen estimates that drugs were a factor in as many as 28 deaths in 2016, and that number is increasing every year. Actual data is not recorded in Boone County, but Nielsen has budgeted the addition of a crime analyst to ensure it is tracked moving forward.

“One of the problems in our country with addictions is that we often attach such a stigma to them that we don’t talk about it,” Brooks said.

She hopes that conversations on the subject will help lessen the stigma and encourage people who need it to get treatment.

Commentary by Terry Anker Famed American inventor Alexander Graham Bell once said, “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

Too often his words reflect in our own lives. We set course planning to move from one space to another without considering a contingency plan. Like people exiting a crowded theater only using the door that is propped back rather than opening any of an array of other adjacent exit doors.

We imagine our route, then line up as if our brains cannot conceive of another.

Yet whether we can find a new course on the map or not, life continues to move.

We pass along its corridors barely noticing until we find a portal locked, obstructing our smooth passage. We strive diligently to bypass it and, in failing, collapse in our own grief believing that our lives will go no further, trapped by our own conception.

Yet even if our work creates a path to open, get around or simply break through the barrier to allow us to continue along our way, we might expend such vast resources so as to turn the victory into a loss. How do we know it is time to look for another portal?

With time comes wisdom, and our own measure of grit is determined. We learn when to pound the door and when to find another. But isn’t it all made easier if we remember Bell’s admonishment that it is a rare journey with only one path to its final destination?

REA D ER ’ S V I EW Officer reunites teen, drone Editor, On Monday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 a.m., we were startled by a Zionsville police officer at the front door, asking if a Zionsville Middle School student resided in our home. What could have been every parent’s nightmare turned into an unexpected, joyous surprise. Sgt. Joseph Robinson asked if our son was the owner of a drone he had found in the woods while hunting deer antlers. Stunned and not sure how to respond, the officer proceeded to pull out what we believed to be our son’s lost and gone-forever drone.

He explained how he viewed footage from the SIM card to locate the area of origin. After driving through our neighborhood and reaching out to neighbors, he was able to identify our house and deliver the drone (in perfect condition) to our son.

The drone was a treasured gift from this past Christmas and growing hobby for our son. This gift had been earned,

after many hours of flying and honing skills to fly an aircraft of this complexity.

This was a special gift.

To have the drone delivered home safely was an unexpected gift, and we are greatly appreciative. Sgt. Joseph Robinson’s determination to help a complete stranger has inspired my son to help others and be creative in the approach.

Recently, I had between 11 and 15 teenage girls asleep in the basement. I lost track of the headcount as soon as they humor swarmed the mini-chocolate fountain with sharp wooden skewers and marshmallows.

It was survival at that point, people, so I quickly fled to the relative peace and quiet of the upstairs, shoved a beach towel into the crack at the base of the door (to block both the high-pitched squeals of delight and the overpowering scent of floral deodorant/perfume) and offered up a few Lenten Hail Mary’s to ensure I was alive to see the sun rise on the morrow.

Success! I awoke the following morning actually feeling rested. Of course, I had slept fitfully until about 2 a.m. when I couldn’t take the stair-running or the kitchen-banging any longer. But I was smart this year. Instead of channeling “Mommie, Dearest” in full facial mask mode and confronting the masses directly, I simply texted my darling daughter to have everyone prep for shut down. She quickly replied “Gucci,” and I congratulated myself on using technology to communicate with my newly minted 13-year-old.

Did I mention these are all competitive dancers? And that within 30 minutes of their arrival this hormonal plague of locusts had already drank and discarded four large bottles of orange Fanta, plowed their way through three bags of Doritos and were clamoring for cheese pizza while attempting to shish-kebob-me on their way to chocolatey goodness? It was only 5:30 p.m.!

I can tell you my basement floor looked like a makeshift disaster shelter, with little cocooned bodies lying everywhere. And FYI, I counted 14 before the smell did me in.

Wishing you well, Richard Commentary by Dick Wolfsie In the top left corner of a supermarket tabloid one week in 1983 was a photo of exercise guru Richard Simhumor mons running in Central Park.

Next to him was me, at the time the new host of a morning talk show in New York. The caption read: “Jog with a Lover.” This was pre-Seinfeld’s “Not that there’s anything wrong with that,” but there was something inaccurate about it.

Yes, we were friends, which is why reports of his absence from the public have been so troubling to me.

We met in the ’70s in Columbus, Ohio.

On my evening talk show, he counseled audience members. My wife was skeptical of his sincerity, but after the segment, she witnessed him, off camera, consoling an overweight teen. Both Richard and the young lady were in tears.

Two years later in the Big Apple, I taped an interview with Richard. As we strode along Fifth Avenue, a woman told Richard that her terminally ill mother had been inspired by him. With that, he hailed a cab and sped off to the hospital to pay his fan a visit, leaving me alone with an entire

production crew.

In 1991, I began my 27-year stretch at WISH-TV, which included my favorite three minutes of unscripted live TV. Richard was appearing at a local mall, his plane set to land early in the morning. My segment was live, so I had no way to ensure his on-time arrival. In a stroke of great luck, his limo pulled up while I sat on my front step interviewing a professional clown and a very overweight chef, both of whom had wanted to meet Richard.

When Simmons exited his limo, we all broke into an exercise routine at 5:30 a.m. In the studio, anchor David Barras completely lost his composure. Weeks later, Richard wrote me: “And there we were in front of your house at sunrise. A clown, a chef and a baby beagle. Nobody would believe this.”

Wherever he is, I hope Richard is safe and happy.

Bags to Riches fundraiser set

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Tracy Miller figures everyone loves to get a good deal on a handbag or purse, especially when it’s for a philanthropy good cause.

The fifth annual Bags to Riches, a donation and resale fundraiser, is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 in room K130 at IU Health North Hospital, 11700 N. Meridian St., Carmel.

“We basically sell gently used handbags, tote bags, golf bags, wristlets and purses,” said Miller, director of philanthropy of IU Health North. “And 100 percent goes to our patients in need.”

Miller said the goal is to raise $5,000.

Bags start at $1. Some higher-end bags are on the silent auction table with bid pages.

“We had a Chanel purse go for $500 in the auction in the past,” Miller said.

The collection period is March 25 to April 15. The bags can be dropped off at IU North.

In addition, two senior living communities, Carmel Health & Living, 118 Medical Dr., and Copper Trace, 1250 W. 146th St., Westfield, serve as drop-off points.

“The more bags we get in, the more money we make for our patients,” Miller said.

Miller said the first four Bags to Riches have generated approximately $15,000 for patients in need.

The funds are used for patients’ transportation to and from the hospital.

“Sometimes people arrive after an accident and they can’t go home in the clothes they arrived in because they could be soiled, torn or ripped, so we get them something to wear,” Miller said. “We provide food vouchers. For example, (if) a child is Lifelined from the northern part of the state and the family is in tow, we provide food for the first night to help them so they can get settled here. So it’s patient support that is desperately needed in a time of crisis.”

The event is run by Jill Dodson, an IU Health North Hospital social worker.

The hospital’s social work department runs the sale. The donations are tax deductible. There is no fee for sale entry and no parking fee. Cash, checks and major credit cards are accepted. For more, visit iuhealth.org.

Shoe collection a success — Reuse Heart & Sole recently wrapped up its annual shoe collection drive to benefit folks who need footwear. Nearly 6,000 pairs of shoes were collected and delivered to Changing

Footprints, a nonprofit that will distribute the shoes. The top collection sites were Milestone Contractors with more than 1,000 pairs, and the Town of Whitestown with 900 pairs.

Health and fitness classes – Witham Health Services offers several health and fitness classes for all ages and fitness levels. Classes include: Breastfeeding Education, Diabetes Management, Rock Steady Boxing, Silver Sneakers, Tai Chi and more.

Turn your St. Patrick’s Day celebration into a chance to enjoy Irish heritage with hearty foods and a lively atmosphere. When it’s the only day each year it’s acceptable to pinch non-conforming friends and family, it’d be a shame not to go all out.

Servings: 6 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 1/4 pounds beef, top round, cut into 3/4-inch pieces, 3 cloves garlic, minced, salt, to taste, pepper, to taste, 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped, 3 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch pieces, 2 medium parsnips, cut into large chunks (optional), 3 cups low-fat, reduced-sodium beef broth, 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary, 1 leek, coarsely chopped, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Directions: In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic. Cook,

gently stirring until meat is evenly browned.

Season with salt and pepper. Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender. To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook. Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired.

Blueprint for Improvement: Converting bedrooms into master suites Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background Info: This 1950’s home in the Devonshire neighborhood of Indianapolis was in need of a functional, spacious master suite.

Before problems: The owners were looking for design strategies to develop a more efficient master suite layout without a full addition. This required some strategic space planning within their existing house footprint. Because of the wooded lot, the interior spaces needed additional daylight as well.

After solutions: The goal was to design a master suite that utilized the existing home’s square footage, while creating a more functional floor plan.

1. To create functional space for the master suite, two small bedrooms were converted into a large master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and walk-in closet.

2. To create a larger master bath, two full baths were transformed into one full bath and a larger master bath. This was accomplished by creating a two-foot bump-out for the small amount of additional square footage needed.

3. A double vanity and large walk-in shower were accomplished with this new layout.

4. For additional daylight, three skylights were added in the roof system: two in the bedroom and one in the closet. In addition, the existing windows were replaced with larger windows to maximize the daylight and view to the exterior.

The Karnak Temple complex is thought to be the largest religious center in the world.

It may have provided the inspiration for a religious ritual practiced by travel billions of people.

Around 2000 B.C., Pharaoh Sesostris ordered construction of a temple near what is now Luxor, Egypt. For 1,300 years, his successors kept building on the same site until the collection of temples, halls and obelisks occupied 200 acres.

Facilities devoted only to Amun, one of the most important of the gods worshipped at Karnak, occupied 61 acres. In approximately 1450 B.C., Pharaoh Tuthmosis III built an artificial lake lined with stone, 425-feet long by 250-feet wide, just south of the main Temple of Amun. Stone steps on the perimeter of this Sacred Lake lead into the water, which symbolized the primeval waters of creation. Priests living in special quarters south of the Sacred Lake used it to purify themselves before performing religious rituals in the temples of Amun.

According to the Bible, after the

Israelites left Egypt under the leadership of Moses, they fashioned a bronze basin and placed it near the entrance of their portable tabernacle, where the priests purified themselves in water before performing religious rituals. When King Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem he placed a large bronze basin called the Molten Sea near the Temple, where priests ritually purified themselves and their vessels. Moses’ basin and Solomon’s Molten Sea are echoed in Jewish mikvahs, Christian baptismal founts and Muslim ablution pools.

Some people have speculated that the word “amen,” used in many of the world’s religions, is connected with the god Amun, who was worshipped at Karnak. Far more likely is the conclusion that the widespread practice of using water for ritual purification may have begun at Karnak’s Sacred Lake almost 3,500 years ago.
