Council denies Wolf Run proposal

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council joined the Zionsville Plan Commission in denying a proposal to transform the DEVELOPMENT former Wolf Run Golf Club into a neighborhood with hundreds of new homes.

The council unanimously voted against the rezoning request at its March 5 meeting. The proposal included a maximum of 360 singlefamily homes and mixed-use buildings with retail and offices or up to 200 multi-family housing units on 223 acres at the southwest corner of US 421 and SR 32. In January, developer Stan Burton said he planned to remove the 12 acres of retail and apartment uses from the rezoning petition.

Town council member Bryan Traylor, whose district includes Wolf Run, said he could not vote for a project that would “encourage further high-density development” in the area in the near future.

“This may be a good project down the road, but this is way too early for a project of this scope to jump 3 miles north of where utilities currently are,” Traylor said. “The idea of bringing public utilities to the area is pitched as a plus, but as a resident of the area and a representative of that area, we don’t want it.”

Developer and property owner Stan Burton said after the meeting that a landfill to the southeast of the property will prohibit development from that direction.

“Development is going to have to go down SR 32 from from Noblesville to Lebanon to connect I-69 to I-65,” he said. “Citizens utilities sees it, Westfield sees it, Lebanon sees it.

Zionsville seems to be the only one not to.”

Joe Hillman, a resident of the Timberwolf neighborhood to the south of Wolf Run, spoke on behalf of the remonstrators at the meeting.

“We’ve been (to town meetings) numerous times, and it’s time to move on,” he said to the

council. “(Burton) is a guy who took a worldclass golf course and ran it into the ground, and he’s asking for a bailout. This is about money.”

Burton stated in an email that Hillman’s comments were “off base.”

“Mr. Hillman’s comments before the town council were very disappointing, false and without merit. Throughout the entire rezoning process the remonstrators brought nothing but personal attacks, false claims and not a single legal or business argument against the development,” Burton stated. “I’m disappointed that the remonstrators who I pledged to listen to and work with were unable to participate in a civil and professional manner. The truth is my team and I worked tirelessly to develop a community asset, which would have benefited many people living and working in Zionsville. In the end, Zionsville lost a beautiful development which would have brought large tax revenues and public utilities at my expense.”

Burton said after the meeting that his team is exploring future options for the site. He said he’s still interested in meeting with neighbors and Traylor to discuss their concerns and that Wolf Run will not reopen as a golf course.

“We will bring a quality development to that intersection,” Burton said.

Town could tighten smoking laws

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Smoking has been illegal in Town of Zionsville buildings for more than a decade, but soon using other forms of ORDINANCE tobacco could be, too.

The Zionsville Town Council introduced an amendment at its March 5 meeting that would ban e-cigarettes, snuff and all other forms of tobacco on all town property and in town vehicles.

Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro said the amendments are modeled after similar updates recently approved in the City of Fishers. He also said Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak is spearheading the initiative.

The penalty for smoking or using tobacco in a prohibited area remains at a maximum of $250 per offense.

The town council is expected to vote on the amendment at its next meeting, scheduled for 7:30 a.m. March 19.

American Legion events — American Legion Zionsville Post 79 will host a St. Patrick’s Day dinner from 4 to 7 p.m.

Model UN conference — The ZCHS Model United Nations Club competed at Indiana University in February and nine student received awards. Johnathan Ralstin was awarded best position paper for his work in the Joint Crisis Committee. County reacts to deputy’s death

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Boone County was shocked by the March 2 death of deputy Jacob Pickett, who was shot while pursuing a IN MEMORIAM suspect.

Although shaken, the community has stepped up to support the Pickett family, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and others in law enforcement as they deal with the tragedy.

Pickett In Lebanon, many community members attended a March 3 vigil to remember Pickett, 34, who lived in Zionsville. On March 8, Zionsville residents organized a luminary walk in Pickett’s memory March 8 at Heritage Trail Park. Many other acts of support occurred throughout the week.

The efforts continued March 9, the day of Pickett’s funeral. Officers from several nearby agencies patrolled the county while officers from BCSO and other law enforcement agencies attend the service. The towns of Zionsville and Whitestown closed

their offices March 9 so employees could attend.

A memorial fund for Pickett’s family has been set up by the Fifty Club of Boone County. Donations may be made at the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, at a local Key Bank branch or at goo.gl/d8PxyE. Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen arrested Anthony Louis Baumgardt, 21, of Lebanon March 3. Baumgardt is charged with murder, resisting law enforcement and several other charges.

The 17-minute walkout is meant to protest gun violence in schools and honor the 17 people killed in a Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla..

ZCHS senior Laura Rodgers, who is helping organize the local walkout, is passionate about ending gun violence in schools.

“The prevalence of school shootings in our country is outrageous and disgraceful,” Rodgers said. “We, as students, do not feel safe in our schools. We have the right to learn without fear. Children are being slaughtered in their classrooms, and nothing is changing. We want our voices to be

heard and we want something to be done.”

ZCS officials said they will not attempt to stop students from participating in the walkout, but that absences from class will not be excused unless a parent calls the school.

Many student protesters remain undeterred, however. According to Rodgers, protesting outside of regular school hours would not have the same impact as a walkout.

“Although out-of-school activism is important and meaningful, this is about our schools,” she said. “As children, our lives are centered around school, so it is logical that we use this opportunity to make a statement. We are prepared to face the consequences of missing class.

We are making the choice to violate the rules, and consequences are part of civil disobedience.”

Youth art celebrated in March

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library is partnering with teachers from Zionsville Community Schools LIBRARY to celebrate the annual Youth Art Month in March.

Youth Art Month is a national program established in 1961 by the Art and Creative Materials Institute to celebrate the value of art and art education for children. The library has participated in the program since 2011.

“Its purpose is to promote art in schools and to show the value of art for students by encouraging creativity, planning and communication. It really is to point out all the great things kids are doing at schools with art,” said Jamie Schlenk, HMMPL youth services department head.

The library will host several free classes aimed at different age groups. Remaining events are: • March 17 - Working with Color and Pattern • March 24 - The Bike Ride “Some (classes) are put on by outside groups, and some are done by the ZCS art teacher and the art club at the high school,” Schlenk said.

The library and other businesses around Zionsville will display student artwork throughout the month.

ay you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all your heart might desire.

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com On a fateful February night in 2014, a giant sinkhole opened beneath the showroom floor of the NaCLASSIC CAR tional Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. Miraculously, no one was injured. But the freak occurrence sent eight of the vintage American-built sports cars crashing to the bottom of a rocky 45-foot chasm.

One of those vehicles, a 1962 tuxedo black Corvette, belonged to David Donoho, an Indianapolis resident who, through the efforts of Zionsville attorney and close friend Beth Sease, had gifted the classic car to the museum in 2011. He did so to assure it would be meticulously cared for upon his death. A lifelong bachelor with no children, he died in 2013 at age 76, one year before the sinkhole swallowed his prized possession.

“When the sinkhole happened, thankfully he was gone, because it would have been devastating for him,” said Sease, who served as Donoho’s estate attorney for 20 years. “I began to see how it was his closest friend, almost. It was kind of a part of him. He purchased it when he was in high school.”

Fortunately for Donoho and Sease, the car’s story didn’t end at the bottom of a muddy sinkhole. Four years to the day after it fell in, the fully restored car was put back on display during a special Feb. 12 ceremony at the museum.

had two passions: Corvettes and model trains, but especially Corvettes — and his 1962 machine, in particular.

“He kept it totally in its original condition,” Sease said. “The only thing he changed on it was when the convertible fabric was cracking with age, he replaced it with a hard top. But other than that, he used a certain kind of fuel and oil in it. He was really, really particular about it.”

Restored by the museum at an approximate cost of $28,000, the Corvette had significant damage to the rear end, frame and windshield. But of the eight cars that went into the sinkhole, it was one of only three that was salvageable.

“The car is absolutely stunning,” Sease said. “It looks just like he left it, absolutely just like he left it. The paint’s probably a little shinier. They just did a fabulous job on it.”

But others who have spent time at Panama Christian Evangelism in Boquete, Panama, said Beering the mission isn’t what it seems to be. They said it serves as a shelter for its founder, Dr. Alan Handt, to sexually abuse teenage girls who are dependent on him for jobs and security for their families.

Beering adamantly denies the allegations against his longtime friend and colleague.

“This has been a nightmare to deal with, because if there were anything to it, I wouldn’t have anything to do with any of these people,” he said. “When it began, it mushroomed. Well-intended souls got in the middle of it.

They were convinced they had better ideas and they needed to take it over.”

Alan Handt, 79, was detained in Panama last week and will voluntarily return to the U.S. in the coming days, Beering said.

A spokeswoman at the U.S. Embassy in Panama said authorities detained Handt through migration law articles 50 and 63, which outline requirements for emigrating or leaving a country temporarily and give the ministry of the interior authority to

expel a foreigner whose presence is contrary to national interests. She did not have additional information on the specifics of why he was detained.

When reached by phone before the detainment to discuss previous allegations of sexual abuse, Alan Handt, former director of public safety for the City of Indianapolis and former Alan Handt senior vice president of medical and academic affairs at St. Vincent hospital, said that questions should be directed to Beering and referenced an email sent from his wife Deborah’s account to Current.

“The people that have reached out to you (about this matter) are mistaken and misguided,” the email states. “I have publicly pointed out that they’re not acting on my behalf and have misrepresented the facts and my statements to further their malicious agenda.”

‘MUCH MORE SERIOUS’ Lynn Pike of Anderson spent a week at the mission in May 2014. A campus minister’s wife and veteran of short-term mission trips, Pike said she spent the week delousing children’s hair, picking up trash and assisting students with homework.

In some ways the trip was like many of the other trips she’s done. But throughout the week she said she witnessed several events that raised red flags in her mind, from Alan Handt yelling at her to remove a fussy child in the exam room from his presence to “sensing a heaviness, a sadness and feeling of fear” while conversing with female employees at the mission.

Pike said she befriended Deborah Handt

in the early days of the trip, but as the week progressed she became concerned with Deborah’s emotional health. Shortly before returning to Indiana, Pike said she read a letter to Deborah Handt she wrote to encourage her, but Deborah’s response was not what she expected.

“She explained that the positive things we saw were not representative of what was really happening and the health of the mission,” Pike said.

Pike said she kept in touch with Deborah Handt after returning home. She said Deborah told her about her husband’s issues with control, anger and inappropriate behavior with girls at the mission.

“As I pondered what I had experienced in a week’s time, all Debbie had told me and what the Panamanian teenage employee shared, I began to suspect that my new friend was quite depressed,” Pike said. “I also suspected that his inappropriate behavior with the young girls was not Deborah Handt simply inappropriate but much more serious.”

So one night Pike reached out to the Panamanian teen to see if her suspicions were correct. When she awoke the next morning, she said she found a string of messages detailing the sexual abuse the girl said she suffered at the mission between ages 12 and 15.

“My 19-year-old friend begged me not to tell a soul. Her mother, brother and she all owed their livelihood to and were dependent on this angry, abusive husband, doctor and director of the medical mission in a Third World where men and white skin wield the power and influence over those they deem of lesser intellect and value,” Pike said.

After much “distress and prayer,” Pike said she contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement to report what she had learned. An official with ICE referred Current to the United States District Court for more information. USDC spokesman Tim Horty stated in an email that he could neither confirm nor deny a criminal investigation before formal charges are filed.

Although Deborah Handt, who lives in Zionsville when not in Panama, had previously cut off communication with Pike, Pike said she messaged her to let her know that she had contacted ICE. Court documents show on Aug. 28, 2014, Deborah Handt spoke with Panamanian authorities, asking them to investigate allegations that her husband had sexually abused young girls.

stated that a 19-year-old female said Alan Handt inappropriately touched her when she was 13 or 14 years old, and by age 15 the two had sexual relations.

In the document, Deborah Handt outlines other allegations of sexual abuse she heard about from the young employee, including an alleged incident from earlier in the summer of 2014 involving a 15-year-old student/ employee and allegations that Alan Handt had sexual relations with a student in 2007 and required her to get an abortion.

“I had heard rumors that Alan had sexual relations with minors, but I didn’t believe it considering that one time he started to touch a girl in public and I called him out on it and he told me he wouldn’t do it again and he didn’t do it again,” Deborah Handt states in the complaint, translated from Spanish. “I did see that Alan, while giving temporary jobs to the girls, gave them gifts and responsibilities that called for them to be near him.”

Deborah Handt declined to discuss the matter in detail with Current, but Beering said she retracted the statement she gave to authorities. When asked to provide Deborah Handt’s retraction, Beering provided a screenshot of a reply to a post by former mission volunteers Gary and Deborah Pearcy in an online forum about Boquete, Panama, describing concerns they had during their time at the mission beginning in 2013. Posted by “Wife” on March 3, 2016, Beering said it was a response from Deborah Handt.

“Without going into detail, I would like to say that I regret the way I handled this very delicate personal situation in 2014, as well as some of the people I confided in,” the reply states. “Also, what I said at that time was often said out of anger, misunderstanding and/or frustration.”

One girl stated that Alan Handt repeatedly had sex with her, despite her objections, beginning when she was 15 years old. Another girl stated that Alan Handt touched her private areas when she was 12 years old.

Beering said there was evidence the girls were “badgered” into making the statements by misinformed people who had a “vendetta” against Alan Handt in large part because of his management style.

“None of the people who have been particularly sanctimonious about this speak very good Spanish, and that’s a problem,” he said. “They overheard things and misunderstood them and misinterpreted them, and they assumed that people would come and tell them the truth when that is absolutely not what happened.”

On May 18, 2015, the Panamanian court dismissed the complaints, as authorities were unable to prove that a punishable act could be tied to Handt.

But this wasn’t the first time Alan Handt had faced allegations of sexual abuse.

‘NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE’ In October 2007, three sisters who were 9, 12 and 14 years old at the time gave statements to Panamanian authorities accusing Alan Handt of sexual abuse. The statements outline details of the alleged abuse and state that Alan Handt threatened to fire the girls’ father. The oldest girl is one of the alleged victims Deborah Handt referenced in her 2014 statement given to the Panamanian authorities.

The oldest girl stated that Alan Handt forced her to have sex with him repeatedly beginning when she was 12 years old. Her 12-year-old sister stated that he touched her private areas, and her 9-year-old sister stated that he grabbed her private areas.

On Feb. 28, 2008, authorities dismissed the charges, stating that medical examinations showed that all three sisters were virgins and that Alan Handt suffered from a condition that made some of the allegations impossible.

Beering said that the girls’ allegations occurred because their father, an employee at the mission, was trying to “get double his vacation money.”

“The employee was trying to extort money, which is a very, very, very common thing in Panama,” Beering said. He also said the girls later told investigators that Alan Handt had never touched them.

But others had been raising questions about Alan Handt’s interactions with young girls in previous years.

Tammy Huey and her family sold almost everything they owned to move to the Boquete mission indefinitely in May 2005.

A nurse now living in San Antonio, she said her family enjoyed working with the local population so much that they’d like to still be serving there. But they left in August 2006 after finding it nearly impossible to work with Alan Handt, whom they had been warned about by another missionary family before heading to Panama.

“They told us, ‘It’s not what it looks like,’” Huey said.

“They told us they suspected Alan was abusing girls. They didn’t have any proof, but they suspected it.”

At first, Huey said she didn’t suspect anything malicious was happening, although it didn’t take long for her to notice that Alan Handt “disliked the boys” and “spent a lot of time with the girls.”

“It was always weird to us, this man who has all this money but yet he wants to run around with little girls all the time,” said Huey, adding that she never saw him touch anyone inappropriately.

Huey said she was troubled to see that Alan Handt would have young girls spend the night at his house when his wife was gone.

“That was totally inappropriate,” Huey said. “We just knew you couldn’t say anything to him about it.”

But looking back, she wishes she had done more. She said she wasn’t surprised to learn of the content of the allegations against Alan Handt, but she was shocked that the girls shared details with the authorities.

Grit is an old word that has come into new fashion. The 1969 Henry Hathaway film “True Grit,” starring John Wayne and a very young Glen Campbell, recounts the story of a teenage girl wanting to avenge the murder of her father by hiring Wayne’s character, a codgy lawman aptly named Rooster Cogburn, because he was alleged to possess the grit to get the job done. Throughout the film, she comes to realize that the strength of character required resides in all of us – if our will or circumstance can only release it. Wayne’s portrayal illuminated the big screen, ultimately winning his only Oscar after three nominations. Grit, at least as Wayne portrayed it, isn’t pure – it may not even be polite – but it is about doing what is right, what needs to be done and doing it when it is needed.

Today, a quick perusal of any bookstore will show scores of tomes dedicated to the subject. Grit, it seems, is making a comeback. Are we tough enough to survive in a difficult world? Can we overcome the inevitable roadblocks along our journey? Can we get back up after something has knocked us down yet again? Today’s authors cite study after study of folks doing extraordinary things against seemingly overwhelming circumstances.

A friend was recently sharing that her young son had decided, against her advice, to adopt a dog. The boy had not shown much aptitude for responsibility. But, this loving beast inspired him. Early each morning, they walk. Daily is a ritual of care. His commitment is constant and unbounded.

Among all priorities, this is the singular one to which he is dedicated. There is something about doing this thing that drives him. Do we have the same in ourselves?

How’s 2018 shaping up for you? Here’s a rundown of mine: • My teenage daughters are giving me a run for my money. One has decided that Snapchat and the KarHUMOR dashians are way more important than silly things like U.S. history grades and a non-toxic bedroom environment. The other speaks to me only when she is feverish with the flu, needs a ride to Starbucks or has a Geometry question.

• On a brighter note, I’ve only received one hate mail thus far. Apparently, I’ve ticked off some moms by insinuating that staying at home is a terribly hard job that requires alcohol to cope. I wasn’t insinuating anything. Motherhood is the hardest thing you can do, and most days with little ones are challenging. Who cares if you need some wine after a botched visit to the Children’s Museum? It doesn’t mean you don’t appreciate your circumstances. It just means you had a rough day and would like a drink. Cheers!

• I’m starting to feel my age, at least physically. The knees are constantly cracking, sometimes refusing to work altogether. My hair stylist had to cut out my “grays” at my last visit, which disturbed me to no end. And my hormones are off the charts, causing periodic bouts of insomnia, night sweats and extreme witchiness.

This year looks like it might be a tough one. But I have my middle-age health, two male children that love me and this column.

Together, we are asking the FDA to review at least five chemicals or classes of chemicals each year. It’s not enough, but it’s a start.

Catching this late, late show Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The Academy Awards were coming up, and on Friday my wife wanted to see “Lady Bird,” one of the Best Picture HUMOR nominees, but it was only showing at 11:15 p.m., way past my bedtime. Not only that, but if we were to go out for a movie at that hour, we needed something to occupy ourselves between 6 and 10:30 p.m. We ended up watching a movie on Netflix, which is kind of like grabbing a bite to eat at home before heading out for dinner.

I asked our friends Bob and Cathy if they wanted to come along.

“Bob, Mary Ellen and I are going to an 11 o’clock movie. Want to join us?”

“Cathy usually doesn’t get up until noon.”

“No, I mean 11 tonight.”

“Wait, you guys are going to a movie at 11 p.m.? That means the film won’t let out until tomorrow. Are you writing an article for AARP on the lives of super-seniors?”

Bob declined the invitation, so it was just Mary Ellen and me. My concern about the evening proved correct. Mary Ellen kept poking me in my side.

“Dick, you’re dozing off.”

“I told you this would happen if we went to a late movie.”

“I know, but we’re still in the car on the way to the theater.”

This particular cinema had state-of-theart seating: Recliners with comfortable armrests and a place for snacks and drinks.

“Do not fall asleep this time,” cautioned my wife. “I want to talk about the movie on the way home.”

As we headed back later that night, Mary Ellen asked me what I thought of the flick. I told her that I really related to the part where the guy went to class and forgot to study for the exam and that he forgot to wear pants to school.

“That wasn’t in the movie, Dick. That’s one of your recurring nightmares.”

Yes, I had nodded off, but I was thrilled my dreams were Oscar material.

On Sunday night, we watched the Academy Awards. I have no idea which film got best picture. I fell asleep by 10:30.

Course addresses mental health

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Mental health awareness can be a difficult topic to discuss, but Zionsville resident Darby Casady wants FIRST AID to help remove the stigma and address ways community members can support each other and identify the signs of mental illness. She will facilitate a Mental Health First Aid course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 22 at Brick Street Inn, 175 S. Main St. “I’ve had 20 years of corporate training experience,” Casady said. “Like we all do, I fell into this. My second son lives with a mental health condition. He works, plays guitar, paints and is healthy. I started wondering why wasn’t I using my training and development skills in the mental health field?”

Casaday became an active member of the National Alliance for Mental Illness. She had previously attended the program and wanted to bring it to Zionsville.

The MHFA program will focus on a fivestep action plan called ALGEE. “The steps are as follows: Assist and assess for suicide risk, listen non-judgmentally, give reassurance, encourage

professional help and encourage self-help,” Casady said. “We’re really shy about asking if a person is thinking of suicide and if they have a plan. That should be our first question if we see someone in distress.”

Heart scan can help detect early warning signs Commentary by Dr. Ronald Mastouri Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women, and the deadly condition can PREVENTION often strike without warning or symptoms.

For many adults, however, there is a way to learn more about their heart health through a heart scan.

A heart scan is a computed tomography) scan that measures the amount of calcified or hardened plaque buildup inside the coronary arteries. The scan is completed in just a few minutes and does not require a contrast dye injection. Reviewed and evaluated by a cardiologist, the series of images of the arteries and blood vessels reveals early warning signs of heart disease. Ashley Straut, a 2014 Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate, chose to perform her home show her senior year.

Straut said the Purduettes are similar to show choir. The group performs all genres, usually donning sparkling outfits.

“We often perform at various events like religious services, alumni association events and retirement facilities,” she said. “We have a tradition in the Purduettes where we allow each woman to have the opportunity to have a home show if they so choose. It’s a way to say goodbye and to show the (other) women where you’re from.”

The Fishers Purduettes event will be at 7 p.m. April 14 at Cornerstone Lutheran Church, 13450 E. 116th St. There are six members from the Fishers area.

Blueprint for Improvement: Crooked Stick backyard transformation Commentary by Larry Greene

Background Info: This home is in the Crooked Stick neighborhood in Carmel.

Built in the 1980s, this home was in need of a larger kitchen with higher ceilings and updated outdoor living space.

The goal for the exterior remodel was to create a more functional backyard by adding spaces for the homeowner to entertain and enjoy the pool with family.

1. The existing sunroom was removed, and the kitchen was expanded. The new space was used to add a covered porch, which created shade in the backyard.

2. Two ceiling fans were added to the porch. New lighting also was added.

3. A new Trex composite deck was added to the left of the covered porch. The deck gives the homeowner extra space for outdoor seating and the grill, which was previously on the pool deck.

4. Design elements were added to the exterior of the home: Contrasting Trex railing and steps on the covered porch.

The sunroom in the rear of the house was not being utilized. There was no shaded area in the backyard. Aside from the pool deck, there was no good space to entertain guests.

London’s British Museum, founded in 1753 to accept Sir Hans Sloane’s TRAVEL extraordinary collection of rarities from around the world, is the world’s oldest public museum, displaying treasures from every continent. Although many of its 8 million items provide insights into other cultures and eras, only the Rosetta Stone provided the key to understanding an entire civilization.
