What it means: Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro said the council had to re-establish the funds in order to receive the highest taxes possible. Council member Bryan Traylor asked Mitro to specify what the funds were in order to educate the public.

“It is basically for capital improvements of various types, whether it be

Mitro said for the CCD, most of the projects were related to street or stormwater. The CFBE Fund is for firefighting-related projects. For example, the CFBE paid for the renovations under way at Fire Station 92.

What happened: The council unanimously approved two ordinances amending certain chapters within the Town of Zionsville Code of Ordinances.

What it means: Attorney Heather Willey said during the next few months, the town will be updating the language in its ordinances.

“We have not done a comprehensive update to the Code of Ordinances since we did our two reorganizations,” she said, noting that the updates will create more transparency for the public. “We thought it would be important to go chapter by chapter through the entire code

over the course of the next several months to update terminology, to make sure terms adopted by the town are reflected in code.”

For example, at its March 4 meeting, the council approved amendments to reflect the town no longer has the position of clerk-treasurer. Updates also were made to reflect the council now has seven slots and will update the council district map.

Sports award nominations open

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com The Community Foundation of Boone County is accepting nominations for the 2019 Lionel Dubay Youth Sports CFBC Award. The award was endowed in 1993 by Lionel Dubay’s wife, Gwen, his friends and community donations to honor him eight years after he died in a car accident in 1985.

“He was a vital, active parent and supporter of youth sports in Zionsville,” said Julie Reagan, development and communications director for the CFBC. “Every year, the awardee chooses a nonprofit organization that benefits youth sports in the community to receive a grant of $450.”

The winner also receives a plaque.

Nominees can represent any area of youth sports and should be someone who has made an “ongoing commitment or significant contribution to youth sports in Zionsville.”

“Any coach, team mom, active supporter, etc.,” Reagan said. “Anyone who has made an ongoing commitment to youth sports in the Zionsville community.”

The 2018 recipient was youth sports coach Eric Bradley.

Orthodontics office gives back

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Bone marrow registry and orthodontics don’t logically go hand in hand. But for Gorman & Bunch Orthodontics, there’s more to life than straightening PROJECT 44 teeth.

“It’s more than about making smiles. We have an opportunity to make a difference in our community,” Dr. Jason Bunch said.

Bunch’s office is conducting “Be the Match” throughout March, with a goal to inspire 430 people to join the bone marrow registry to donate cells to help patients with cancer or leukemia.

Bunch’s office is partnering with Project 44, created to honor former Butler basketball player Andrew Smith, who wore No. 44.

His widow, Samantha Smith, started the nonprofit organization after her husband lost his two-year battle with cancer.

Andrew Smith, who grew up in Zionsville, received a bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with leukemia. The transplant extended his life several months.

ZCHS girls win fourth straight sectional

Accomplishing a preseason objective, the Zionsville Community High School girls basketball team won its fourth consecutive Class 4A sectional championship.

“When they won their freshman year, BASKETBALL it was the first sectional championship since 1996. It had been a long time,” coach Andy Maguire said. “That was very exciting, and then we just got better and better after that.”

Two years ago, the Eagles finished 25-2 after losing in the regional. Last year, they were state runners-up after finishing 22-6. This year, despite injuries to key players Maddie Nolan and Megan Sheridan, they finished 18-9 following an overtime loss to Homestead in the regional.

Zionsville soundly defeated Lafayette Harrison, which it lost to in the regular season, 62-26 in the sectional final.

Of the seniors, Nolan, Sheridan, Delaney Richason, Gabbie Woodworth and Chloe Wilson played middle school basketball together and never lost a game. Lilly Bird joined the team her junior year after her family moved to Zionsville from Florida.

Other team members include juniors Aaliya Carlson, Kaiti Huber and Imani Thomas and sophomore Katey Richason, the team’s season scoring leader. Her sister, Delaney, is the fifth all-time leading scorer in ZCHS history.

Nolan finished her career as the Eagles’ second all-time scorer, moving ahead of her mom, Kris Veatch Nolan, who graduated in 1984 and is the fourth all-time leading scorer.

“I remember the exact game that Maddie passed me on the career scoring list,” Kris said. “It was her junior year at McCutcheon. She made a free throw. I think only Henry (her dad) and I knew when it happened, as we were keeping track. I was so thrilled and excited. Records are made to be broken, and when it’s your kid that breaks your record, that is special.”

Maddie is proud of her achievement.

“I thought it was cool to even have the opportunity to break my mom’s record. I would joke around with her about how I would beat her records,” Maddie said.

“For myself and for Maddie, it has always been about how the team did,” Kris said. “Individual records mean a lot less if your team isn’t successful.”

The calendar says it’s supposed to work this way: Autumn starts Sept. 21, bringing falling leaves and frost.

PLAIN TALK Winter marches in Dec. 21, bringing snow and freezing temperatures.

That’s supposed to hang around until March 21, the arrival of spring rains, flowers and warm weather. Summer is scheduled to show up June 21, with the splashing of swimming pools, the drone of lawnmowers, the Fourth of July and the smell of burgers on the grill.

I don’t remember it ever being that way.

Let’s start with autumn. I spent two consecutive October weekends in a canoe on the St. Croix River in Wisconsin in 1975. I got sunburned because I didn’t use sunscreen.

In September 1979 in Minnesota I mowed the lawn a final time wearing gloves and a parka. We had half a foot of snow on the ground the next morning.

The winter of 1981 became known as Tropical Minnesota. January temperatures hit 80 and stayed there. A bank in Albert Lea grilled hotdogs in the parking lot to attract new customers.

And now it’s March, with spring just around the corner. It has already been in the upper 50s and down to single digits. It has snowed and rained, and sunshine has unexpectedly brightened otherwise gloomy days.

Still, the entrance of spring has its own mystique — something to do with the high school basketball tournament. It is pretty much a given that no matter what the weather was earlier, the blizzard of the century will march in just before opening tipoff.

In 1967, busloads of South Dakota high schoolers began migrating from across the state to settle a highly contested basketball season. The day before the tournament, it started to snow. The wind picked up and the temperature plummeted. It was shortly after midnight when the wreckers hauled the last school buses out of the snowdrifts.

The games went off without a hitch, and on the return trip temperatures hit the 70s.

The kids opened the school bus windows to welcome spring.

BCSO encourages residents to sponsor a deputy

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is seeking donations from the public for its Sponsor-A-Deputy fundraiser.

FUNDRAISER The initiative raises funds to send BCSO deputies to Washington, D.C. for Police Memorial Week, where they will be able to honor Jake Pickett, a BCSO deputy who was killed in the line of duty in March 2018.

“They have a monument there for fallen officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty, and we are going to see the presentation of the new names to be added, and one of those would be Deputy Jake Pickett,” BCSO Public Information Officer Wesley Garst said.

Police Memorial Week is May 12 to May 16. The BCSO wants to send as many deputies as possible. It also will send its honor guard.

Travel arrangements are still being worked out, so Garst said it is unclear what the final cost per deputy will be.

Main Street business owners talk longevity, reasons new businesses experience turnover

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com When long-time business owners in the Zionsville Village area are asked how they succeed when turnover COVER STORY is prevalent along Zionsville’s Main Street, they cite, among other strategies, focused advertising, facility ownership and stable staffing.

Main Street in Zionsville is a prime location for many new businesses. The area has walkability, a unique downtown feel and a wide array of shops, restaurants and other retailers. But not all new businesses have prospered. Some have closed within a year or two of opening.

Others have enjoyed long-term success.

Jewel Box Jewelers, for example, has flourished for more than three decades, despite competition from two nearby jewelry stores that also have been in business for a long time.

Jewel Box Jewelers owner David Haug credits his success to a variety of reasons, from catering to the customer, owning his own building, handpicking his staff and making himself visible in the downtown community.

“I walk to the bank almost every day. It gets me walking down the street, kind of that see-and-be-seen concept. I think it’s important,” Haug said. “I don’t want to say other owners stay in their box and don’t come out, but that’s part of it.”

Because Haug owns his building, he has a mortgage instead of fluctuating rent. He said business owners can, to a point, control their own destiny if they own the property.

Haug also credits his staff with his success, noting that having familiar faces behind the counter is an advantage.

“Longevity in staff is a big part of it,” Haug said.

cess on Cedar Street just off Main Street in Zionsville’s downtown. For that, he credits effective advertising.

“Most people come in, open up their doors and look out and go, ‘Where’s the business?’

They last one to three years and can’t support the rent any longer,” Hopwood said.

“Everybody else opens their doors and says, ‘Where’s the people?’ You’ve got to go get the people.”

Hopwood advertises on a billboard along I-65. He said downtown businesses should strive to attract travelers to Zionsville.

“We have to always advertise. We have got to keep pushing that,” Hopwood said.

“You run out of money to advertise? You have to find the money.”

Town of Zionsville officials said turnover is normal, and even beneficial, for a downtown environment like the Village, especially when the vacancy rate is low.

“It’s healthy,” said Wayne DeLong, director of planning and economic development.

“Last time we looked at it, we had a vacancy rate of less than 10 percent, which is amazing for an urban/suburban area. At any given time, you can walk into the Village, and of all spaces in the Village, approximately 10 percent (are vacant). It doesn’t show the market is too tight or too loose, but it does show it’s very popular.”

DeLong said businesses sometimes vacate a property because they outgrow the space. However, he said it is tough to track which businesses close because vacating businesses often don’t announce they are closing. Zionsville Fire Dept. Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention Joshua Frost said the town frequently encourages building owners and occupants to file for occupancy permits but struggle to get early compliance.

Frost said the ZFD often stumbles upon a new business that didn’t file permits before opening, making new occupancy numbers difficult to track. Frost encourages all new business owners to touch base with the

fire department to file an occupancy permit.

When a business does vacate a property in the Village, other potential businesses are eager to occupy the space. For example, when the old Noble Order building at 98 S. Main St. became vacant, town officials said four prospective tenants inquired about the space within a week.

REASONS FOR VACATING One downtown business in the Village that recently closed was Ballerinas and Bruisers, 180 S. Main St. The children’s clothing store operated for nearly 12 years before closing.

In an email blast to subscribers, owner Steve Schwartz cited online shopping sites, such as Amazon, taking a toll on his small business, but he declined to comment to Current. The store closed in mid-February.

Commentary by Terry Anker It can be said with abundant certainty that social media has changed the way in which we interact with each other. Countless studies, articles and even full-on books have been dedicated to assessing the cultural phenomena unleashed by our newly cultivated ability to share, perhaps over-share, the various details and vagrancies of our daily existence.

We tell events big and small. The news of a new baby in our family or the loss of a tire in the ubiquitous central Indiana potholes is spread with equal and banal distribution.

We post our vacation pictures, bringing with them both shared joy and a modicum of envy. We post half-baked postures and opinions alongside our well-considered and executed musings. We post more links in the prayer chain seeking to lift up someone who is struggling.

Along the way, we’ve begun to understand how best to present ourselves, hopefully our better selves, to the world.

In so doing, we’ve become curators in our own lives. The more tech savvy among us have figured out, by research or by accident, what kinds of posts are among the more appealing. Called by some clickbait, the notion of creating our own headline has become an obsession for us. We find ourselves validated or rebuked by the number of casual “likes” that might correspond to our reveries.

Eventually, society will find its watermark. Our habits will bend to the collective will of the social media marketplace. Then, it will all seem second nature. In the meantime, we endure the random passerby blocking traffic in search of the perfect “selfie” to post and wonder: “Is this my good side?”

Wall of despair Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m experiencing a bit of a rage stroke and need to vent my frustrations before I punch an innocent wall. And though HUMOR our liar-liar-pants-on-fire president certainly has warranted several of my recent hypertensive episodes, today I’ll be complaining about a more mundane topic, the cost of college (I haven’t the space for a Trump tirade!).

My husband Doo and I have four children, the oldest of whom is a sophomore at an in-state university. Our twins are seniors in high school, and our youngest is a freshman. We have saved enough to pay for one year of college for each of them, with the understanding that they will be responsible for the rest through scholarships, loans and part-time work. Oh, the naiveté!

For starters, we have perfectly wonderful, but perfectly average, kiddos. No top athletes, artistic phenoms or academic wunderkinds here. We also make too much money.

Not me, of course; I’m a teacher in Indiana!

But Doo does well enough that financial aid isn’t in the cards, so even if they stay close, they will have to come up with $75,000 each for undergrad.

Why not just borrow? Well, governmentbacked loans only cover about a fifth, and a 20-year old who works part-time reffing intramurals and selling Cutco knives doesn’t qualify for a private one. So, if said young adult wants to remove the hold on his registrar’s account, pay rent and eat, his mom has to Venmo him cash and then become a co-signer. Multiply that by three more moochers (two of whom are hell-bent on heading west), and you see why I’ve been eye-balling that wall for the past 30 hours.

Editor, I’m a senior, age 71. I probably won’t be around when the worst effects of climate change take effect but my children and especially my three grandchildren will be.

However, climate change is happening here and now — and for them, I’m terrified.

The latest climate report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (UN) says we have approximately 12 years to transform our economy to preserve the stable climate human civilization has depended on for millennia. As a retired scientist myself, this is not some BS dreamed up by wild-eyed liberals and elitists. We need a massive mobilization of every sector of society on par with what science and justice demand.

A Green New Deal will keep Americans safe from climate change and create millions of green jobs. Indiana is already a leader in green job creation in the Midwest.

We can take our expertise and ingenuity and put it to great work for the planet.

Other nations, including China and India, are rapidly moving in this direction. We must, too. The Green New Deal is a commonsense policy that is already popular with the American people, regardless of political party.

Udder nonsense Commentary by Dick Wolfsie As I mentioned last week, my wife and I are trying to learn a little Spanish in preparation for our trip to South HUMOR America. When I searched for translation options online, I found: “Cow to English” on the site Lingojam. I’m not kidding. That’s news — no, moos — we can use.

Many cattle expressions have beefed up our language: “Being put out to pasture;” “milking something for all it’s worth;” “cash cow;” “’til the cows come home;” “holy cow!;” “a bunch of bull;” “cowlick;” and my favorite, “power steering.”

There is an inexplicable compulsion shared by everyone who drives past cows grazing in pastures. The urban dictionary coined the term “Bovilexia” for the urge to open the car window and yell, “Moo!” Cows have a lot of time to contemplate — more so than dogs, who usually have family obligations. What do cows think about? I’d give a Big Mac to know.

Humans get into serious trouble when we have too much time to think. Pablo Picasso was happy painting bowls of fruit on a table for years. Then, one week he got

ahead of schedule and had some extra time to just ruminate. We all know what happened after that.

What would cows say to us if they could speak? Here are a few things I believe cows are trying to say: MOO: I hate that “Got Milk?” commercial.

Let’s clear this up right now: I got the milk.

You’ve been stealing the milk.

MOO MOO: What’s all this talk about cow tipping? Twenty years of providing milk, and I’ve never seen a penny.

MOOoooo: You think it’s easy being a cow? You try chewing the same thing for 20 years.

MMMMOOOO: Tell those Chick-fil-A people that we appreciate their push for poultry, but, please, we’re cows, and even we can spell better.

That’s it for this week. I admit this is a really strange column, but don’t be mad at me if you considered it a waste of time.

Seriously, don’t have a cow.

Hopwood Cellars completes renovation

Hopwood Cellars, 12 E. Cedar St., recently completed an aesthetic renovation that also added additional storage for wine bottles.

Owner Ron Hopwood said the winery ran out of UPGRADE space to store wine in the back of the store, resulting in boxes of wine being stacked throughout the store. The makeover created a cozier, roomier store.

“Honestly, we ran out of space in the back for all of our wine and just started putting cases of wine out here,” Hopwood said. “It looked terrible, so we just tried to update the look and said, ‘Let’s take (the wine) out of the box and put it on the Hopwood wall.’ We did it for a storage issue, not so much for the ambience, but it looks great.”

Hopwood installed enough wine racks to store 3,000 bottles.

Typically, 40,000 bottles are stored in the back. Hopwood said the winery needed to display some of those out front.

In addition to the wine racks, Hopwood also added new tables, chairs and barstools around the bar, where patrons previously had to stand. Hopwood In addition to the new furniture, Hopwood also brought in barrel seats for a comfier setting.

Hopwood Cellars sells 23 kinds of wine. It bottles 1,200 of each kind at one time. Bottling occurs monthly.

Narducci returns to ‘Camelot’ in opera production

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com It’s natural that Daniel Narducci will take on the role of King Arthur in the Indianapolis Opera production.

MUSICAL Narducci had played Lancelot on a tour where the late Robert Goulet, who originated the role of Lancelot in the 1960 Broadway production of “Camelot,” had transitioned into the role of King Arthur.

“For him to accept our invitation to do his debut as Arthur after literally doing Lancelot all over the world (is amazing),” Indianapolis Opera general director David Starkey said. “He’s been approached multiple times (about) when is he going to do the Arthur debut. It’s a great honor for him to come alongside us and do that.”

Indianapolis Opera will present “Camelot” at 7:30 p.m. March 22 and 23 and 2:30 p.m. March 24 at the Schrott Center for the Performing Arts on Butler’s campus in Indianapolis.

“We’re going to put the opera touch on it,” said Starkey, a Geist resident.

Narducci, a Bloomington resident, is on the voice faculty at the University of Indianapolis.

“This (musical) for me dates back to high school,” Narducci said. “It’s the first musical I ever participated in. I was in the chorus with Cheshire (Conn.) Community Theater, so I have a soft spot in my heart for this show.”

Narducci said he was inspired by his mother after telling her about a baritone in the production singing, “If Ever I Would Leave You.” “She said, ‘I’m sure he was good, but have you ever heard the original with Robert Goulet?” Narducci said. “She put on the (album), and I was blown away. That would have been 1983. From that point on, Robert Goulet was very much on my mind as far as his singing.”

Narducci, 51, did two tours as Lancelot.

The first was a six-month tour with British actor James Warwick in 1995.

“We started in Canada and zigzagged across the United States and ended in Anchorage,” he said.

Kids shine in ‘Junie B.’

By Heather Lusk editorial@youarecurrent.com Teens are channeling their inner 6-yearolds as Zionsville Middle School presents “Junie B. Jones Jr., The Musical,” PLAY based the book series by Barbara Park.

The show follows the ups and downs of first grade, from losing friends to getting glasses to a kickball tournament.

The show is 7 p.m. March 22 and 23 and 3 p.m. March 23 in the ZMS auditorium.

Initially, Noelle Elefante, in the title role, and Anjali Gupta, who portrays her friend Lucille, were apprehensive about the youthful content, not realizing that it was a musical.

“I thought, ‘Isn’t that for kids?’” said Elefante, who, after hearing the music and watching parts of the show online, discovered the fun stories.

“I’ve enjoyed acting like a little kid, like throwing tantrums,” Elefante said.

The seventh-grader studied for her role by watching videos of young children dancing. “(Junie B.) is not a good dancer,” she said.

I stopped in for some quick appetizers and a glass of wine in a quiet corner of the bar, but I can’t wait to go back. Peterson’s is fine dining, so dress accordingly. I tried the Prime Rib Egg Rolls, which were delicious cylinders of prime rib, white cheddar, soy jus, wasabi horseradish aioli and scallions. The outside breading was slightly crunchy, and as soon as I bit into the tender prime rib, it was game over. I should’ve ordered two serv-

ings. I’m a fan of both prime rib and egg rolls, but I have never combined the two before.

I also sampled the calamari, served on top of Napa slaw with a side of ginger orange chili sauce ($15). Delicious.

Grand Canyon: A natural wonder Commentary by Don Knebel On February 26, 2019, Grand Canyon National Park, located in Arizona, celebrated its 100th anniversary. The history of the canyon is about 20 million TRAVEL times longer.

By any definition, the Grand Canyon, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, is awesome. It is 227 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep. Equally awesome are the natural processes that created it.

Beginning about 2 billion years ago, a sea that covered the area began depositing layers of sediment. During the next 1 1/2 billion years or so, about 40 distinct layers were deposited. About 75 million years ago, the geologic events that created the Rocky Mountains began to lift the area, eventually creating the 7,000-foot-high Colorado Plateau.

At some point, a river began flowing on the plateau toward the Pacific Ocean. As the raising of the plateau increased the river’s elevation, the water in what is now the Colorado River began traveling faster and faster

toward the ocean, eroding away one after another layer of the soft sedimentary rock.

The erosion accelerated and widened when the river frequently flooded from melting snow and glaciers in the Rockies. Erosion from fast-moving tributaries flowing into the river further eroded the canyon walls.

With the Colorado River still about 2,000 feet above sea level, the erosion continues and the canyon is slowly getting deeper.

Grand Canyon National Park offers access to the canyon’s north and south rims, with the best and most popular views provided by nine overlooks along the south rim, open year-round. The north rim, open only in the summer, provides access to mule rides deep into the canyon. Access to the west rim is through lands controlled by the Hualapai Indian Tribe, which built a hugely popular glass-bottomed skywalk over the canyon.

Have you ever put spicy mustard on a sandwich? If you inadvertently glob on too much of the GRAMMAR GUY good stuff, you’ll swear you just snorted wasabi. When it comes to spices that are in your face (literally and figuratively), a little bit can go a long way.

In the same way, hyphens and dashes — when sprinkled into sentences properly — add just the right punch. Not only will we learn how to use the hyphen (-) properly today, but we’ll also learn how to use both the en (–) and em (—) dashes.

Let’s start with hyphens. Hyphens are like glue for two words that are connected. Use hyphens in compound adjectives, which are adjectives that precede a noun they modify in order to connect them together. Examples of compound adjectives include well-known, blue-haired, one-eyed and ill-conceived. Hyphens also are used to separate numbers (three hundred sixty-five) and to create a line break when syllables of the same word get separated.

We still see this sometimes in books and newspapers.

En dashes (–) are all about range. Use an en dash in order to show a range of numbers. The Thunder beat the Jazz 120– 101. The store is open Monday-Friday. The en dash is named as such because it is about the width of the letter “n.” To type an en dash on a PC, press ctrl+minus. On a Mac, press option+hyphen.

The em dash (—) is the length of the letter “m.” Generally, use it as a more dramatic substitute for other punctuation, like commas, colons, semicolons or parentheses. Do not—I repeat—do not put spaces around the em dash; allow the words to bump up right next to the em dash to show the immediacy and drama it interjects. To type an em dash on a PC, press alt+ctrl+minus. On a Mac, press option+shift+hyphen.
