Towns hope for more liquor licenses to spur growth

Whitestown has been pegged as one of the fastest growing towns in Indiana in recent years, but politics town officials believe an “antiquated” law has been holding it back from even greater growth.

The town is out of threeway alcoholic beverage Norton licenses, meaning that any restaurant or other establishment looking to sell beer, wine and liquor must look elsewhere. But there’s not many urban areas left for developers to go, as many other fast-growing towns are encountering the same problem. The Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission website states that “the available license quota is filled in 99 percent of areas that are inside city limits.”

A bit of relief could be in sight, however, as a bill that would provide four additional liquor licenses each for Whitestown, Zionsville, Leba-

non, Carmel, Westfield and Fishers has wound its way through the state legislature and could soon be law.

Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton has visited the Statehouse to lobby for HB 1386. He said a developer is interested in building a major retail center in Whitestown that would be similar to Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville, but the inability for new establishments to sell liquor has stalled the project.

Haak “These quality, sit-down restaurants are what the millenials are longing for, and they drive economic development,” he said. “The way we do this census-based licensing is a little bit antiquated.”

State law distributes liquor licenses based on population, but with a census done only once every 10 years, fast-growing towns miss out on economic development opportunities, Norton said. Whitestown recently spent about $140,000 to conduct a special census with a goal of obtaining additional liquor licenses.

“It will bring in $1.9 million in revenue to the town from 2017 to 2022,” Norton said. “It will pay for itself in one year.”

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said that he isn’t aware of his town losing out on economic development opportunities because of a lack of liquor licenses, but he said the town is at a point where the lack of available licenses could soon become an issue.

“If we’re not out of liquor licenses, we’re really close,” he said.

He also said that town officials had discussed conducting a special census, but decided not to pursue it because of the cost.

As of March 4, HB 1386 had been approved by the Senate with amendments and sent back to the House for final approval. Legislators could approve the amended version, work through a committee to make additional amendments or drop the bill altogether.

Norton said the Whitestown Town Council is expected to approve an ordinance at its March 9 meeting that will establish regulatory legislation for the town’s new licenses if the state approves them.

Grandson inspires book on making friends

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com On a recent visit to the playground with his grandson, Parker, Arthur Morris asked him what his favorite thing to do profile was. The answer wasn’t what he expected.

“He just said, ‘I like to make friends with kids I don’t know,’” said Morris, a 50-year Zionsville resident. “That struck me as a great answer but not what I was expecting to hear. I then understood that since most of Parker’s childhood was in the care of immediate adult family members, he seldom got to interact with other children.”

That conversation, Morris said “blew him away” and inspired the idea to write “Friend Maker”. The 110-page children’s book features 75 cartoons and 200 questions for kids to get to know each other. It is geared for children age 5 to 12.

“I actually consider my book an invention.

It’s an invention designed to bring children together and become friends. It invents friends instantly,” said Morris, 63. “It only takes one question being asked to one child from an adult or another child – whether they know each other or not - and it immediately opens up a world of curiosity about each

other, sharing their knowledge and interests all being shared equally. One of the world’s greatest gifts is friendship.”

Morris believes “Friend Maker” would be a useful tool for adults to use to determine if a child might be experiencing abuse by exposing possible “hidden concerns from a child.”

“For example there is a question that asks, ‘Do you know your next door neighbor?’ The answer may surprise you, and you may learn something about that neighbor that just

doesn’t seem right,” Morris said.

So, what does Morris’ grandson think about the book?

“I really didn’t think he would want to sit still while I asked him these questions. But “Friend Maker” (Submitted photo) once we started he wanted more. He then wanted me to sit with him and ask him more questions,” Morris said. “I’ve learned so many things about him I never knew, which fascinated me also.

My theory is everyone – and mostly kids – love to talk about themselves, but instead of sounding like bragging, children get to tell the things to others that fascinate them and their views about things.”

YETI Orphanage held its 13th annual fundraising dinner Feb. 16. Guests heard from Indiana State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell and Miss Indiana Morgan Jackson on the importance of philanthropy, and YETI President and Zionsville town councilor Jeff Papa spoke about the organization and its work in support of underprivileged kids in Indiana and Nepal.

The evening also included a Skype conversation with the orphans in Nepal. Things to know about Indiana Commentary by Ward Degler I was pawing through some old files the other day when I found some notes about Indiana’s former Gov. Robert Orr. He left a strong legacy, of course, plain talk but something I hadn’t known was his wife, Josie Orr, was an Air Corps pilot and flew bombers and cargo planes during World War II. That got me curious about things I didn’t know about other famous Hoosiers. The first complete indoor bathroom in Indianapolis was installed in the home of Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley.

John Chapman – better known as Johnny Appleseed – is buried in Fort Wayne. Amelia Earhart was a teacher at Purdue University and Red Skelton was born and raised in Vincennes. Other native Hoosiers include Florence Henderson, John Mellencamp and the Jackson Five.

Nancy Hanks Lincoln, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, is buried in Posey County. She died when the future president was 9 years old.

A few other Hoosier firsts: Wabash was the first town in the United States to have citywide electricity. The main station in the fabled

Underground Railroad was located in the Levi Coffin House in Fountain City. Hundreds of men, women and children escaped from slavery through the halls of this imposing brick home. The home today is a museum.

Crown Hill Cemetery is the largest cemetery in the United States, Eagle Creek Park is the largest city park in the country, and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum is the largest museum devoted entirely to kids.

During World War II, London was besieged

by German Buzz Bombs. The only one in the world now on public display is on the Putnam County courthouse lawn in Greencastle.

The first town in America to have a regulated speed limit was Kokomo. Early automobiles built there were restricted to driving no faster than 20 mph. Kokomo was also the birthplace of the pneumatic rubber tire, stainless steel, sealed beam headlights, auto safety glass and the first push-button car radio.

And, oh yeah, Indiana still produces 90 percent of the world’s popcorn.

Tharp joins IU team as player

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Although Jackson Tharp was twice an AllHoosier Crossroads Conference player at Zionsville Community High School, alumni he had no illusions that his role as Indiana University basketball manager would one day turn into a spot on the team.

However, after three-and-half seasons of hard work, it did. IU Coach Tom Crean placed the 6-4 senior on the roster Jan. 15.

“Growing up in Indiana, to just put the uniform on itself is unbelievable,” Tharp said.

“Then to get into a few games, I can’t even describe it.”

Entering the final regular season game, Tharp had played four minutes in three games.

But those are moments he can talk about forever.

“I can say I played Indiana basketball,” he said. “It’s something I’m going to keep with me the rest of my life.”

Tharp admitted he does get a bit anxious wondering if he will go in when the clock is winding down and the Hoosiers are up big.

“Really I’m just excited that we are winning by that much that I might go in,” he said.

Tharp is the second manager to join the team since Crean became coach in 2008. He became a manager as a freshman and said he knew it was a possibility it could happen, but he certainly wasn’t counting on it.

“I never came into it looking at that. It’s just a bonus,” Tharp said. “I’ve been involved in practice since I was a freshman, but only as a manager. I only got a chance to show what I could do a few times during a practice. My job was always to make these guys better.”

Crean said he had three reasons for promoting Tharp.

“Number one, he’s an outstanding person and has been since the day he got here,” Crean said on his radio show. “He earned his way up the ladder. Number two, he can wear

a lot of different hats. He made us better all the time, whether it was in a drill or with his passing, by keeping a chart or in the film room. Third, I thought he could help our team.

I haven’t been wrong yet. He’s hasn’t been able to help us in a game yet, but he has in practice.”

Tharp is still getting used to his newfound prominence. Tharp’s mother, Christy, works at Zionsville Middle School. She noticed a student staring at her computer screen.

“He finally asked if that was Jackson Tharp,” Tharp said. “He told her I had just signed his shoes at a game and was excited about it. I told her she needed to buy him a new pair of shoes.”

Two Zionsville Community High School students are taking strides to further their education in STEM – science, Education technology, engineering and mathematics.

Genevieve McLaughlin and Jonathan Parker recently competed in the Bright Ideas regional competition that included five separate teams from Indiana.

“We got to the regional finals where submissions from the Indianapolis area were selected that were the most creative and well thought out. We were able to present our idea sort of like a sales pitch,” McLaughlin said.

“Our idea was called the Benefuel Program. It was basically sort of addressing the fact that the world is approaching a fuel crisis pretty soon, and our oil deposits will run out.”

The Benefuel Program was a proposition to transfer alternative energy sources by picking up fruit and vegetable waste via recycling from houses and farmers who don’t harvest all their crops. McLaughlin said their plan was to propose a way to process these scraps into ethanol to then be used as a fuel additive to fossil fuels in cars, trucks and airplanes.

“We haven’t really thought of next plans.

I think the biggest issue was feasibility,” McLaughlin said. “It was such a large scale concept compared to other teams, ours is more of a process than an individual product.

We haven’t thought about developing it further, but we may work on it more and submit it next year.”

Both students plan on pursuing careers in STEM, and McLaughlin said they both hope to go to Purdue.

Shrek, Jr. coming to ZWMS

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The ogre-meets-girl tale, “Shrek, Jr.” is coming to Zionsville West Middle School.

The Broadway musical veron stage sion of the movie follows the same familiar storyline of the ogre, Shrek, trying to get his swamp back after a variety of fairy tale characters seek solace there. They’ve been evicted from their homes by the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, played by eighth grader Noah Domogalik.

Shrek, played by Cody Lile, must rescue Princess Fiona. The musical adds to what is known about the princess, exploring her history of being trapped in a castle.

“I’m in love with the role,” said Olivia Broadwater, who portrays Princess Fiona. “It’s just great to see different sides of her.”

Lord Farquaad “is such an awesome role, so hilarious,” said Olivia, who added that Noah will spend the performance on his knees to shorten his stature.

After playing Sour Kangaroo in last year’s musical, “Suessical,” Broadwater said she feels Fiona is a lot more like her actual personality.

“It’s fun to bring out the different sides,” she said.

several years with 71 students.

“I like how the show focuses more on the fairy tale creatures,” Broadwater said. “It expresses their story.”

Also president of the school’s drama club, Broadwater recognizes how much time is involved in the production and is excited to share the club’s talents with the community.

“People don’t always know how much work we put into the show,” she said.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. March 11 and 12, with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee for the first time.

Union students become authors

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Four Union Elementary students can add “published author” to their list of accomplishments. achievement The students from second grade teacher Kelly Masters’ class were selected to be part of an anthology, “listening still,” published by the Partnership for Young Writers. The publication features poems, stories, essays, articles and other writings by 175 Indiana students in preschool through eighth grade made from more than 1,000 submissions.

“What better way to give kids a reason to write, because usually they write, and then I’m the only one who sees it,” Masters said.

“Now they have a real purpose and a real authentic audience.”

The Zionsville students, now third graders, received copies of the book that was released in December and found it very cool to see their writing in print.

Louisa Santos wrote a short story about a rainstorm in a cabin, based on personal experience during vacation. Noah Powlen wrote a poem about the ocean and sounds related to the subject – seashells, seagulls, smooth

sand. He chose his submission because “my poem was just better than all the other poems I wrote.”

Camille Twitchell, whose haiku about summer was selected, struggled to choose between five pieces of work. Ainsley Grey’s short story about getting ice cream appears in the book, but she also submitted a poem.

“As a teacher, you try to instill all of these techniques, all of these good tools that writers will use, and you just hope they will replicate that in their own writing,” Masters said.

All four students said they would like to submit additional work in the future.

The Carmel High School boys swimming team winning a state title usually isn’t a surprise. swimming This year was a bit different.

“No one gave us a chance. We were ninth in the preseason poll and tied for fifth in the last rankings,” Carmel coach Chris Plumb said.

“These guys came in and brought it both days, unbelievable performances. This is the least expected one we’ve had. But I always believe in what we can do with the great coaching staff and the guys we have. We needed a lot of guys to step up and they did that.”

The Greyhounds repeated as champs by slipping past top-ranked Zionsville by one point (216-215) in the state finals Feb. 27 at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI. Carmel trailed the Eagles by one point heading into the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Carmel finished second, two spots ahead of the Eagles.

It was the 16th state title for Carmel, which now has six more than anyone else. It was fifth for Plumb as coach. The Eagles, who have never won a state title, also finished second to Carmel in 2015, 253.5 points to 176.

“Even though our last relay got fourth, we moved up two places and dropped three seconds where we were (in prelims),” said Scott Kubly, who is in his 27th year as Zionsville swimming coach. “The effort was there. We just came up one point short, that’s the bottom line.”

Zionsville sophomore Jack Franzman was a double winner, taking first place in the 50 freestyle and 100 free.

“He’s definitely a competitor, and he doesn’t like to lose,” Kubly said. “When he came in as

the No. 1 seed, I thought he had a pretty good chance of winning those events.”

Eagles junior Tyler Harmon won the 100 backstroke.

Carmel senior Troy Li and junior Charles Vaughan were both on the second-place relay team that clinched the title. Li called the final race a heart-stopper.

“It was just an incredible way to top off my high school career,” said Li, who will swim for Brown University next year.

Zionsville couple provides tours of Indy’s flourishing craft beer scene

Andy and Megan Bulla have always had a hankering for craft beer, but they didn’t realize it would be the main selling point of their business. That, and a big cover story green bus.

The Zionsville couple launched Indy Brew Bus in March 2012. The brewery tour originally picked up guests only in downtown Indianapolis, but the couple expanded locations to include Broad Ripple (2013), the south side (2015) and Carmel at the end of last year.

“I’ve always been passionate about craft beer, and she had been working in tourism and PR marketing in downtown Indy,” Andy said.

During a trip to San Francisco, the couple took a tour that included a bus picking them up from a hotel and driving them to different wineries.

“I’m more passionate about craft beer, and a lot of breweries were cropping up,” Andy said. “We want to make it a learning experience, too, so people can go to the brewery and learn about the brewery and learn about beer and showcase what we have in Indy.”

The ticket purchaser can select which tour to take, and each tour stops at four different breweries. Overall, the tours cycle through 12 breweries.

“I did the guest service side of things so our two passions came together,” Megan said. “It was really important for us to hire drivers with knowledge in craft beer and who can teach people about it. We want people to taste outside of their comfort zone.”

Megan said that when picking out the paint color, the company admitted nobody had ever chosen the bright green color that caught her eye.

“We want it to be noticeable,” she said with a laugh.

They launched Indy Brew Bus when their oldest child, Jackson, was 2 months old. Andy still works his full-time job as a physician assistant during the week and helps drive the bus and work with the breweries on the weekends. Megan does marketing for the business full time.

“My favorite part is educating people on beer and the getting the word out. Because I have a background in tourism, I love getting to show off our city,” Megan said. “I love when people come here and they walk away with a new appreciation.”

Many of the breweries that the Indy Brew Bus frequents include local art. However, artwork and beer now have a bigger meaning for the Indy Brew Bus as of Feb. 11.

“A fun thing we (kicked) off in February is we are partnering with the Indianapolis Museum of Art and one Thursday a month we are doing a beer and art tour, where a docent-led tour takes you to visit libation-themed art in the museum, and you get to sample Sun King at the IMA,” Megan said. “Then you get on the bus and go to two more places. It’s a fun new thing for us to reach a new audience.”

Buffett shows his brilliance Warren Buffett, billionaire extraordinaire?

There is no refuting his financial status. We marvel at his wealth, and we realize we’ll never be in the same rarified air as he. That’s OK. A news item barely surfaced last week about the Oracle of Omaha (or, Democrat from Nebraska), and the mainstream media let it pass without comment, which is why we know he’s a Democrat.

If he were a Republican, especially one named Trump, it would have been open season. His mobile-home business foreclosed on more than 8,000 customers in 2015. That’s probably the real “warm and fuzzy” Uncle Warren in action. If he embraces the Democrats, as he has Hillary Rodham Clinton, it’s akin to sleeping with the devil and it calls off the dogs. The mainstreamers won’t give this the ferocity of reporting that a Republican would generate. Think for a moment what would be reported if a Donald Trump-owned mobile home business had done the same, or one owned by the conservative Koch brothers, for that matter. Meanwhile, nary a peep out of Clinton. So, it’s a brilliant move on Buffett’s part. Is this a great nation, or what?

Courage on reserve Commentary by Terry Anker The ancient Greeks believed it to be one of the four cardinal virtues. Courage – defined as the willingness to intentionally put one’s self into a circumstance that brings great fear, anxiety or reprehension.

We honor our heroes for their exceptional fortitude and admire those with the ability to overcome dread with an eye toward the greater good.

It appears every day, in ordinary ways. A toddler learning to take those first tentative steps exhibits their own nascent bravery.

A teenager, making the right choice in the face of daunting peer-pressure, has it. The elderly man facing his own mortality with confident reserve certainly shows it. All around are moments of personal challenge, and then, ones of personal triumphs.

Hamilton Co. Firefighters 4416 and Carmel Firefighters Local 4444 are working to place a memorial on the Court House square in Noblesville to honor those who have lost their lives in serving all of us – reach out to

To overcome real and apparent fear and enter a burning building to the benefit of a stranger, assuredly meets the standard set by the ancients of courage. In remembering this sacrifice and honoring those who have shown such fortitude in the face of adversity inspires us all to find the courage within each of us. One is reminded that the cowardly lion learned that he had it all along if only he’d used it.

Do we all have a “reserve” of courage somewhere deep inside that, if tapped, can help us find the strength to overcome the bondage of our own fear?

I had the pleasure of participating in a Twins Panel a while back, both as a twin myself and as a mother of humor twins. So I thought I’d share my responses with you, my adoring fan base. ‘Cause who doesn’t wanted to know more about me?

1. “Working full-time, do you ever miss your kids?” No. Nor have I ever. Even when I went back eight weeks postpartum after my first born. I do experience guilt, almost on a daily basis, and I occasionally have emotional breakdowns in my car over whether or not I’m a horrible mom for wanting to spend eight to 10 hours away from short people, but I can’t honestly say I ever really miss my kids. Bottom line?

I’m a better mom when I don’t have to focus all of my attention on nutritional lunches, laundry apartheid and choosing which day we’re going to contract pink eye from the Children’s Museum.

2. “With four kids, how do you balance all the activities and still have time for family?” We don’t really. We try our best, but honestly we rarely eat a meal together. With kids in all age groups and at levels where multiple practices/competitions a week are the norm, we are chalking up serious mileage. But studies show that busy, engaged kids are less likely to end up meth addicts or knocked up, so we’re sticking with the crazy.

3. “Do you ever get to spend one-on-one time with your children?” Sometimes, yes. But generally, no. The car usually provides the best opportunity for individual time these days, though with a teenage driver helping out, the moments are becoming less common.

And, if I’m not already asleep at my 8:30 p.m., I will occasionally crawl in bed with a kid and chat about his or her day. I’m not super proud of this lack of parental attention, but no one needs therapy yet, so they can’t be suffering too badly.

There you have it. Enough “Danielle Wilson” fodder for you to make it through the week, whether you’re criticizing or commiserating. Peace out!

Great Indiana Songbook celebrates Hoosiers’ music contributions

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Great American Songbook Foundation is doing its part to celebrate Indiana’s 200th year as a state. history The Great Indiana Songbook: Two Centuries of Hoosier Music free exhibit will be on display on the gallery level of the Palladium in Carmel.

“With the Bicentennial connection, I think this is going to have a broader appeal than some of our other exhibits,” said Chris Lewis, director of programs for The Great American Songbook Foundation.

The exhibit, which opened Feb. 15 and runs through January, features Indiana music legends from Cole Porter to Jackson 5 to John Mellencamp to Axl Rose.

“Our official definition for the Songbook is music that will last beyond the time it was written,” Lewis said. “For our preservation efforts, we focus on the Golden Age and we do focus on the standards. But we’re celebrating American music and Indiana has one of the richest legacies of any state I know. It’s pretty remarkable when you think about it.”

Lewis said the typical Great American Songbook audience clearly identifies with Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter.

“But the Gaithers have written more standards and more songs that are in hymn books and they’re from Anderson,” Lewis said.

The Gaither Vocal Band, featuring Bill Gaither, will make its first appearance at the Palladium at 3 p.m. June 12 as part of the Bicentennial series.

Included in the exhibit is Steve Wariner, a Grammy-winning country singer from Noblesville.

“He sent us several artifacts,” Lewis said.

“We have handwritten lyrics from him and costumes.”

The Wright Brothers are featured in the display. Tim Wright lives in Carmel and brother Tom in Fishers.

The exhibit points out that Albert Von Tilzer who co-wrote “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is from Indianapolis.

An inactive display allows visitors to view music from different Indiana artists.

Lewis said a new program called Perfect Harmony, a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter will be involved. Regularly scheduled group programs are available for those individuals with earlystage Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

“It’s a music therapy program,” Lewis said.

“We bring them in here and show them the exhibit. We use the interactive display. We’ll

have bingo and things that use the brain.”

Lewis said they are also in the process of doing an outreach project with assisted living homes.

Lisa Lobdell, archivist for the foundation, said there are about 20 Indiana artists on the interactive display.

“A lot of people are surprised when they come through, saying I didn’t know this person came from Indiana,” Lobdell said.

There is also another TV screen where documentaries or movies can be shown.

“We’ve had people literally sit and watch a movie and then pull a chair around and watch the music screen,” Lewis said. “You can spend as much or as little time as you want. There are 50 artists represented.”

French favorite: Onion soup

Travel to France in your own kitchen with this classic from the French cuisine. According to legend, King Louis XV invented French onion soup when one day all that was left in the pantry were onions, butter and champagne.

Serve in style in a ramekin with melted bubbly broiled cheese and you will feel having attained high marks in haute French cuisine!

Serves: 5 to 6 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 5 large yellow onions, thinly sliced, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 2 quarts beef bouillon (for a vegetarian version, use vegetable stock), 1 cup full body wine (burgundy or merlot), 1 bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon sage, Salt and pepper to taste, French bread, 1 tablespoon cognac, Croutons, Swiss and gruyere cheese, 2 ounce piece each, grated Directions: In a large pot heated to medium/high, add oil, butter (1 tablespoon) and onions; cook stirring occasionally until onions look translucent, about 20min. Add sugar, salt and continue to cook stirring frequently until onions caramelize, about 10min. While onions cook, in a separate pot boil stock, add sage and bay leaf. Add flour

and 1 tablespoon of butter to caramelized onion, mix. Add hot stock and heat at low-medium for 30min. Transfer onion soup to a broiling cup (ramekin), add croutons, cognac, overlay grated cheese, broil for 5-10 minutes. Serve with warm French bread. Enjoy with a glass of burgundy or merlot. The 58th annual show gardening begins March 12 and runs through March 20 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds West Pavilion and Expo Hall, 1202 E. 38th St., Indianapolis.

“In the past we’ve had some single landscaped contractor gardens in the dark,” said HSI Shows executive director Donell Heberer Walton, who is working her Walton 16th Flower & Patio show and 12th as director.

“This year we have an entire showcase garden aisle that has been darkened,” Walton said.

There will be more than 18,000 square feet of showcase gardens inside Expo Hall, which will be illuminated by landscape lighting, fire features and theatrical lighting.

“It helps people get a visual to wrap their mind around how that space is going to work for them,” Walton said.

Another new thing is hands-on floral design workshops. Each will be an hour long. There is an additional fee for the workshops.

“You get to make something and take it home with you,” Walton said.

Floral design workshop costs range from $10 to $40. The Plant Market featuring ‘Blooms To Go!’ colorful fresh-cut flowers offered within the 4,500-square-foot market in the West Pavilion.

All proceeds from ‘Blooms To Go!’ and the Floral Design workshops benefit the North Central AIFD Scholarship & Education Fund.

Various garden and landCoyle scaping experts also will be at the show guiding workshop sessions in succulent gardening, herb containers, fairy and miniature gardening, among others. These workshops range in price from $10 to $35.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 14, 15, 16, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 12, 17, 18, 19 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 13 and 20.

Bakery offers homemade treats

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com “I think that you can accomplish anything that you really have your heart set on,” said Rachel Gallienne, owner of A new biz Taste of Amish, a bakery that hit its share of bumps in the road before becoming a reality.

Her shop at 62 N. First St. opened in December after challenges finding the right location and requests for a zoning variance.

The bakery is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Gallienne hires a driver to bring fresh-baked donuts and pastries each morning from a northern Indiana Amish bakery, which poses a challenge in the winter when weather can impact delivery.

“I try to tell everybody to follow my Facebook page,” she said, where she updates delays or cancellations of baked goods. That’s also where she lets followers know when her donuts have sold out.

Gallienne’s father was raised Amish but left when he met her mother. She grew up in northern Indiana near her father’s family.

“That’s what I grew up being around, eating all this good homemade quality food,” she said. She made connections growing up in the community and working at an Amish bakery.

“It was easier because I knew exactly what I needed,” Gallienne said. “Here it’s a gamble every day.”

Her donut selection usually contains the same 10 flavors, with seven additional flavors added to Saturday’s menu along with popular goods like cinnamon rolls, pickled beets and noodles.

All of her products come from the Amish community with the baked goods coming from a single source. Other items such as jam, peanut butter and a wide selection of cheeses and cheese curds come from other sources.

The Louvre Museum in Paris occupies more than 650,000 square feet, has 403 rooms and exhibits more than 38,000 items. travel But some of the 10 million visitors each year are more interested in the number of glass panes in its entry pyramid.

The Louvre, a former fortress, was renovated in 1546 as a residence of King Francis I. Francis, a patron of the arts, summoned to Paris a number of Italian artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, who brought with him an unfinished Mona Lisa. Francis eventually acquired the completed Mona Lisa, which hung on the palace walls of a succession of French rulers until 1800, when it was placed in the Louvre, which became a national museum during the French Revolution. The Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911.

When it was finally recovered in 1914, the previously little-known painting was an international sensation. Millions of people began coming to the Louvre just to get a glimpse of Da Vinci’s now famous work.

By the early 1980s, the Louvre’s crowds were overwhelming its traditional doorways, so Pres-

ident Mitterrand commissioned the design of a new entrance. The winning idea, submitted by American architect I. M. Pei, was a 69-foot-high glass and metal pyramid in the center of the courtyard, allowing visitors to enter through a large underground lobby. Critics immediately pounced on the pyramid design as incongruous with the Renaissance style of the building.

Rumors began circulating that Mitterrand had ordered that the pyramid, a shape long associated with the occult, include exactly 666 glass panes, a number often connected to Satan. Dan Brown perpetuated this claim in “The Da Vinci Code.”

Today, the Louvre’s pyramid has become as much a symbol of Paris as the Eiffel Tower, itself lambasted when new. Visitors who carefully count the glass panes consistently come to 673.
