Sidewalk poetry: Do tread on me

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Cultural District wants people to walk all over its latest project.

Two poets, one adult and one contest youth, will have their poems stamped in cement through the Step-On-Us Sidewalk Poetry contest.

“Kids have been writing their name in concrete forever,” said Donna Monday, a board member with the Zionsville Cultural District who is a published poet. “It sounds so simple until you start to do it.”

Monday brought the idea to the Cultural District board last fall and has been working with the street department, town government and legal counsel to bring the concept to fruition. She first heard about the idea through a rejected proposal for an Indianapolis park. Monday thought it would work well in Zionsville.

“Sidewalk poetry, doesn’t that sound like a

Village thing?” Monday said.

A similar project has been successful in St. Paul, Minn., and in other U.S. cities, but this project is unique to Indiana. The stamps are created by a facility in Minnesota and can be reused multiple times. One was created with the town’s logo that will be used for the new town hall’s sidewalk.

Because of size constraints, poems must be short and can’t be political or profane. The youth category, for those age 18 and younger, is limited to Zionsville residents. The adult category is open to all Indiana residents. Entry fees are $5 for youth and $10 for adults.

Poems will be reviewed by a panel of ZCD board members, a member from Poetry on Brick Street and a board member from the Poetry Society of Indiana.

All entries are due by March 30 at zionsvilleculturaldistrict.org. The winners will be announced during National Poetry Month in April.

Statehouse intern — A Zionsville Community High School graduate is gaining experience as an intern with State Rep. Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel) and her fellow members of the House of Representatives during the 2017 legislative session. Allison Vanatsky is a senior at Indiana University working on a bachelor’s degree in public relations and journalism. As an intern in the House Majority Communications Office, Vanatsky helps write press releases, create legislative handouts and set up press conferences.

Community garden plots – Zionsville Parks has plots available in two community gardens. Plot fee is $25 and includes a 20’ x 20’ plot at either Heritage Trail Park or Elm Street Green. To register, visit Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays beginning March 9.

ZHS grad won’t be next Navy secretary

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Philip Bilden, a Zionsville High School graduate, has withdrawn from consideration to be Secretary of the Navy. update Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis stated Feb. 26 that Bilden made the “difficult decision” based on “privacy concerns and significant challenges he faced in

separating himself from his business interests.”

Bilden graduated from ZHS in 1982. He is a businessman, former military intelligence officer and Naval War College cybersecurity leader. He has served Bilden on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Naval War College Foundation.

He recently retired as a co-founding member and senior advisor of HarbourVest Partners, LLC, a global private equity investment management firm. He serves on several boards for nonprofit organizations.

President Donald Trump announced Jan. 25 that he planned to nominate Bilden as the 76th Secretary of the Navy. Mattis stated that he will make a new recommendation to Trump for the post in the coming days.

Salem UMC pastor retires, receives Sagamore honor

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com After more than 50 years working in ministry and the juvenile justice system, Rev. James Miller is retiring. Miller, 83, faith preached his final sermon Feb. 26 at Salem United Methodist Church in Zionsville. It was followed by a celebration.

“It was wonderful,” Miller said. “It really is a climax to my life.”

Miller was ordained in 1958 after graduating from the University of Indianapolis (formerly Indiana Central College) in 1955. While preaching at Lockerbie Square United Methodist Church, he created a street ministry to work with and develop programs for the underprivileged. His efforts drew the governor’s attention, and he asked Miller to join the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in 1970.

Miller worked there for three years before moving on to the Crisis Prevention Center within the State Dept. of Education. In 1974, he became the executive director of the Indiana Juvenile Justice Task Force, where he stayed until his retirement 25 years later. Miller said he funneled money into 16 youth service bureaus and eight group homes and wrote four state plans to improve methods of working

Miller returned to the ministry in 2005 when a friend asked him to preach at Salem UMC while he went on vacation.

“I went out there and just fell in love with those people,” Miller said. “That’s the most unusual church that I’ve ever seen. Those people out there are just saints.”

After all those years of service, Gov. Eric Holcomb presented Miller with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award Feb. 12. The award is given to those who have provided notable service to the governor or the state.

“It’s sort of a confirmation on the life of a person,” Miller said. “People like to read bad things, and good things don’t sell newspapers

and they don’t make headlines. It’s just refreshing, and to be a part of that group is just really encouraging for our society.”

Now, Miller plans to start writing. He doesn’t know what the end product will be, but he wants to share his “unusual” life experiences.

Trying to outwit the birds, again Commentary by Ward Degler One of the unused Christmas tree ornaments that didn’t make it plain talk onto the tree again this year was a miniature porcelain birdhouse. I don’t know where we got it.

It was just one of those things that showed up one year and never seemed to fit.

Rather than put it away when Christmas was over, on a whim I took it outside and hung it on the Japanese maple in the front yard. Then I forgot about it.

Until the other morning when I watched a black-capped chickadee hop onto the thing and explore the tiny hole in the front. Is she seriously thinking about moving in? If so, she was probably trying to figure out how to enlarge the hole to chickadee size.

One thing I’ve learned about birds is that once they make up their mind about something, especially as it relates to nesting, they can seldom be deterred. Pound for pound there is nothing more stubborn than a wren or house finch — or in this case, a chickadee ‚— that has decided to build here and only here.

However, since it is unlikely that even the most hell-bent bird has beak power enough to hammer through solid porcelain, I pawed through the junk in my shop until I found an old wooden birdhouse that I had brought inside to repaint several seasons ago and promptly forgot.

My agenda now calls for a quick paint job and then hanging the real birdhouse on the tree next to the ornament. Will it work? I haven’t a clue. Birds make up their own minds about these things.

A few years ago I neglected to toss the remains of a hanging basket on the front porch. It hung there, swaying in the winter breeze until spring. Then, just as I was going to take it down, an indignant wren flew out of the ruined foliage and let me have it with both barrels from the porch swing. Trust me, you have not been dressed down until an angry Carolina wren tells you what for in no uncertain terms.

The basket stayed until the babies took flight. Then I congratulated myself for having served the greater good for all aviankind.

I thought that would be the end of it. Fast forward to the following spring. No sooner had I hung a fresh flower basket until one of the previous year’s hatchling wrens showed up and made herself at home among the blooms and foliage. She, too, screamed obscenities whenever I came too close.

Have I outwitted the chickadee? I wouldn’t bet on it.

Zionsville racer to make debut

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com Chandler Horton is pretty good at juggling.

The 19-year-old from Zionsville is a freshman at Marian University, a member indycar of the school’s cycling team and about to drive in his first race in the USF2000 series, a support series to IndyCar, in St. Petersburg, Fla., March 11 and 12.

“It takes a lot of scheduling, and I just force myself to stick to it,” Horton said.

Horton “Cycling and racing schedules and training are pre-determined, so during the week it’s all about looking ahead and knowing what homework I have coming up.

I have no free time. I am either doing homework or riding my bike or going to the track.”

RJB Motorsports announced last December that Horton would be driving for the team after testing with it in the fall. The teen grew up in the racing world – his father, Jeff, is the IndyCar director of engineering, and the family often traveled to races in their motor home, staying in the driver lot.

“My dad’s worked in professional racing for 30 years now. Since I was a couple months old I have been going to IndyCar races,” Horton said. “I took my first steps at an IndyCar race.”

The family even lived at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when it first moved to the state

when Horton was 4 years old while shopping for a home. Once they settled in Zionsville, he raced dirt bikes from ages 5 to 12. When he turned 13, he transitioned to go-kart racing, and when he was 17, he started racing Formula Fords. Behind the wheel, Horton said he is calm but can be aggressive. “(It’s) just a lot of controlled excitement and a lot of focus on the task at hand, because if I start worrying about other things, I won’t drive well,” he said. “You have to know what you need to do, whether it is a practice or test session or going out to qualify. At the start (line) you run through in your head how you want it to go and how it should go, and when that green flag drops, it’s go-time.”

Horton’s pre-race ritual is always the same – putting his clothes on the same way.

“I put one side on before the other and I always get in the car from the same side, and the person who does my belt has to do it from a certain side,” he said.

His goal is to make his Indianapolis 500 debut in five years, and in 10 years have a solid IndyCar career driving for Team Penske.

“And hopefully, an Indy 500 win,” he said.

For now, Horton is concentrating on the 14 races during the course of eight weekends in his inaugural season with RJB Motorsports.

“I would say my motto can be summed up with what Steve McQueen said, ‘Racing is life.

Anything that happens before or after is just waiting,’” he said.

Theater group faces uncertainty

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Representatives from Off Main Street Players have met with town officials to determine if they will be able to town hall continue to produce plays and musicals in the new town hall when it opens in late 2017.

The community theater group has primarily used the community room in Zionsville’s current town hall the past 10 years for its performances.

The community room that is under construction will not have a stage but will be an open banquet-style area. Zionsville Town Manager Ed Mitro expects the new space will be used by more groups, such as trade organizations and the chamber of commerce.

“The community room is a multi-purpose room, but we have to be careful not to limit its utility,” Mitro said.

Molly Griffin, treasurer of the Off Main Street Players, recognized that adding a stage would require additional space and said that a portable stage might be an option if they can find a location to store it between perfor-

mances. She also is open to the possibility of another location for performances.

“We’ve been lucky with town hall, because it’s been economically feasible,” Griffin said.

“We don’t have much revenue other than ticket sales and some community support.”

“We’re certainly not kicking them to the curb,” Mitro said, “but we have to look at the big picture of what town hall is.”

Mitro said that the town “left Mitro the door open to continue working” with Off Main Street Players.

Griffin said that her group’s relationship with the town has been strong, and she’d like for it to continue.

“We’re hopeful that something will work out,” she said. “We want to keep producing shows, and it takes space to do that.”

No performances by the Off Main Street Players have been scheduled for the upcoming year as they await progress on the new town hall.

“We would like to get active again,” Griffin said.

How passionate? cover story “A couple of years ago she asked me for this perfume that smelled like old books,” said her mother, Christa Luke. “I thought it was the craziest thing. What girl wants to smell like old books? It was called Paper Passion, and it was $80.”

Christa was told the perfume, packaged in a hollowed-out book, was on back order for months before it was finally canceled. Kate wanted it so her bedroom would smell like old books. That room includes a large, full bookshelf.

“She likes hardcover when she can get it, and she doesn’t like to get books from the library,” Christa said. “She likes to have her own copy and she likes to be the first one to read it.”

Now, Kate’s bookshelf can include a prominent display of her own young adult romance novel, “Kinda, Sort Of,” co-authored by Rachel Rozet. Kate will hold a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. March 11 at Black Dogs Books, 115 S. Main St., Zionsville.

Kate moved to Zionsville from Valrico, Fla., near Tampa, last summer after her father, William, an engineer, was promoted to a new position at Duke Energy.

Kate and Rozet, a good friend from Florida, worked on writing the 232-page book for more than two years. Rozet had first approached Kate after writing a chapter.

“She had this basic idea that these two friends are being told to become a couple, so they fake date,” Kate said. “She said, ‘This is the book I wish someone would write.’ So I said, ‘Why don’t we write it?’”

So Kate started making character descriptions and chapter outlines.

“The experience for collaborating on a book was truly life-changing,” Kate said. “It was great to be given advice for

writing and to mix our creative minds together. There were obviously challenges in the process, but overall I wouldn’t change anything about it.”

Kate said collaborating had its ups and downs, but it ultimately worked.

“A lot of times we’d have sleep-overs, and we’d spend the entire time writing,” Kate said. “I’d type and write a chapter and then I’d pass it on to her. We would pass it back and forth. If I got stuck, she could continue. If she got writer’s block, I could take over.”

They would often communicate through FaceTime as they wrote.

The original plan was to finish the book before starting their freshman year at Strawberry Crest, an international baccalaureate high school in Dover, Fla. But they couldn’t meet that self-imposed deadline, finally finishing the book last summer.

Kate was determined to find a publisher rather than self-publish.

“To me it meant a lot more if a publisher said, ‘This is really good and we want to spend the money and time to

make it a novel,’” Kate said.

After being turned down nine times, The Polyethnic Publishing company agreed to publish the book in December.

Polyethnic specializes in publishing different aged authors from around the world. The book is available on Amazon and at the Black Dog Books event.

Christa said the family has always described Kate as relentless. For instance, she decided she wanted to be a vegetarian at age 6, even though her parents aren’t.

“When she sets her mind to something, there is really no changing it,” Christa said.

“She’s determined.”

Kate is busy working on her next books. She is co-authoring two other books with authors from the same publishing company. She also is working on solo projects.

Distortions can be fixed The current political climate is proving brutal for everyone. Distortions are happening on both sides of the political spectrum.

Learning to have constructive conversation with the “other side” rather than the divisive distorted banter relies on the average citizen being thoughtful of our words. Challenging distortions is not a call for political correctness. Distortions offer dramatic effect but cannot offer the clarity necessary to see both sides of an issue. In his book “Feeling Good,” Dr. David Burns described a list of 11 Cognitive distortions. The three distortions I see most often in my political discussions are: • All-or-nothing thinking — You see things in black-and-white categories.

• Mental filter — You pick out a single, negative detail and dwell on it exclusively so that your vision of all reality becomes darkened.

• Labeling — When someone else’s behavior rubs you the wrong way, you attach a negative label to him: “He’s a loser.”

Whether you are interacting on social media, reading an editorial or listening to a pundit, I believe it is imperative to our public discourse that we acknowledge when others are clouding the issues with these types of distortions. By acknowledging distortions, we could move our conversations to the richer details indicative of sound policy addressing the concerns of all citizens.

Government policy should reflect a spectrum and not just one side. We need diversity in thought to make our communities strong and receptive.

Loving in two hearts Commentary by Terry Anker Families are complicated – even when they are not. Most of us have a dad and mom.

Well, we all, by the recipe, “must” have at least one of each to get the process started.

Once begun, there are any number of combinations that meet the standard. Sometimes, we participated at the origin – the ones that conceived and remained, choosing a mate, marrying and eventually setting our sights on shared parenthood. Others arrange family differently. But all focus, uninterrupted by the machinations of daily living, on delivering into the world one or more fully formed adult children ready to reproduce that which they have seen modeled at home – namely to propagate the species and bring forth another generation of us. There are countless among ourselves who stand up and carry the unrelenting yoke of parenthood.

None is better than the other. Yet, all are dedicated to survival in a sometimes hostile and inhospitable world by self-replicating and, in so-doing, continuing the line that

came before us. This month a good friend, long-ago adopted, reached out to his biological parents. Some 50 years ago, they, for many reasons, delivered an infant into the kind and willing hands of an adoptive family desperately awaiting his birth. But only now did that baby decide to announce his continuing existence to those whom he had imagined but not known.

Facebook made the connection. Messages were exchanged. Soon, regular telephone calls followed. Birth mother led to birth father led to step-siblings led to all manner of aunts, uncles and family penumbra. His “family” has long been firmly in place. Those who raised, loved and cared for him stand ready – still devoted – in earnest hope that his journey will fulfill. How do we live and love in two hearts?

Recently, I’ve developed a crush on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I love her spunky, “I’ll never die” humor energy, and the fact that she does not take poop from anyone.

But what I admire most is her practical take on balancing work, motherhood and marriage.

Basically, she suggests that you allow each area of your life to serve as a refuge from the others, and that on occasion, you become deaf.

It is this second little nugget of wisdom upon which I would like to expound today, my dear readers, for in my infinite experience as a teacher, wife and parent, I’ve found that pretending not to hear muttered cuss words, murmured criticisms and stream-ofconsciousness rants by teenage girls proves to be a great advantage, cutting way down on my stress levels and, consequently, the amount of Prosecco needed to dull the edge.

Think about it. Are we always better off when we correct young people on their choice of vocabulary? Is it always mandatory to fully engage with a color guard member who is ranting about some rifle spin or saber toss that she just can’t manage to land?

Sometimes, I find myself so worked up by my students’ colorful profanity or my husband’s insensitive remarks or the fact that my daughter has been spewing play-by-play dance drama for 28 minutes straight that I lose perspective on the bigger things in life.

I literally get sucked into the negative comments and the bratty shenanigans and forget that all things considered, I’m OK. So, I’m going to continue to heed the advice of Justice Ginsburg and occasionally go deaf.

“My lease is up, and I just decided not to renew, just come back to my flagship store,” said Hoover, who owns the business with his wife, Jenny. “It did a good business (in Zionsville) and I’m hoping some of the people will come here, because it’s not that far.”

Hoover said they didn’t want to commit to another lease.

The flagship Brunchies, serving breakfast and lunch menu items, has been in Meridian Village Plaza, 13732 N. Meridian St., in Carmel for more than 11 years. The Zionsville restaurant was slightly larger.

The Carmel-based company offers a job search app that will expand operations into 15 metro areas, including Chicago and Cincinnati, within the next 12 months. WorkHere plans to do its hiring during the Seidle next five years.

“Online job boards were first developed in Indiana, and we are proud to continue this trend by expanding WorkHere’s operations here while sharing the state’s innovations across the country,” Mike Seidle, co-founder and chief operating officer of WorkHere, stated in a press release.

The hyper-local work/life social network utilizes GPS to connect workers with nearby employers. WorkHere has more than 36,000 users in Indiana and adds 200-500 new Hoosier users each day.

Report outlines kids’ issues news@currentzionsville.com The Indiana Youth Institute released its 2017 KIDS COUNT in Indiana Data Book on Feb. 27. Among its findings county are that Hoosier children are more likely to be victims of poverty and maltreatment than their peers nationally.

It also states that Indiana teens report higher levels of dating violence and suicidal ideation than in many other states.

In Boone County, 7.4 percent of children live in poverty, a 1 percent drop from the previous year. The state average is 20.4 percent. Hamilton County came in lowest at 5.2 percent, and Delaware County ranked highest at 31.2 percent.

Boone County’s average unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent, and the median household income decreased from $68,352 in 2014 to $67,552 in 2015.

The 2017 KIDS COUNT in Indiana Data Book from the Indiana Youth Institute compiles data from hundreds of national and statewide sources to paint a picture of what it’s like to be a child in the Hoosier state.

Harpist to visit Hussey-Mayfield March 14

By Sara Baldwin • editorial@youarecurrent.com Harpist and composer Jan Aldridge Clark will perform an Irish harp concert at the HusseyMayfield Memorial Library at 7 concerts p.m., March 14.

The concert comes just before Saint Patrick’s Day. Aldridge Clark will play traditional Irish tunes and sing in Gaelic on some songs as well as taking the audience on a musical journey that includes blues, Latin music and classic rock. Percussionist Michael Beck will join her in concert.

“I’m going to be doing some really famous, traditional Irish music. The Irish music will be played on a small electric harp. It has a different sound,” Aldridge Clark said. “It is not just dance music, but it’s also music of war. For many many years Ireland was at war with England.”

Beck and Aldridge Clark play their unique repertoire at several libraries around the state. Aldridge Clark said they plan to play songs by Ozzy Osborne, Nirvana and Metallica.

“It’s a great place to have a concert. Sound carries well in there,” said Orton Ortwein, the adult programming coordinator at Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library.

Ortwein said Aldridge Clark was highly recommended by other promoters in Zionsville. Aldridge Clark was classically trained at the Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington and continued her master’s studies at California State University-Los Angeles, pursuing jazz studies. She has recorded multiple albums and performed at private parties and weddings of such high-profile clients as Sylvester Stallone, Tony Danza, Barbara Walters, John Mellencamp and Henry Kissinger.

“We’ve never had a harpist here before,” Ortwein said. “We do about four concerts a year at the library, and we always try to do something a little different. We also try to celebrate other cultures.”

Aldridge Clark will be available after the concert for a Q&A session and will have CDs for sale. Attendees must be 10 or older to attend. Registration is required.

“I think it’s a great program. Obviously, Tchaikovsky has incredible work. The Elgar (piece) is one audiences aren’t as familiar with. The Strauss will be great. Where’s Amy had a blast zippin’ down a huge chocolate slide, dancing with dinosaurs, hanging out with Indianapolis’ favorite sports teams while sampling delicious food and spirits all under the big top last month at the Children’s Museum. From 8 p.m. until midnight, adults goofed around and played like kids at the annual event, Museum by Moonlight. Face painting and giant-sized Jenga and Yahtzee games were favorites among guests, but the highlight for many was riding the carousel, a piece of local history which turns 100 years old this year. Yep, five floors of crazy fun had by all with no kids allowed, only kids at heart!

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit institution committed to creating extraordinary learning experiences across the arts, sciences and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. CIDE to present Mixed Rep

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Central Indiana Dance Ensemble will be giving audiences a sneak preview of a dance, which group members will dance perform at the Regional Dance America National Festival.

The Carmel-based pre-professional ballet company will present Mixed Rep at 4 p.m.

March 12 at Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre in Carmel.

Vicki Burdick, a CIDE board member in charge of marketing, said the dances include a mixed repertoire of pieces from modern to classical. Many have been choreographed exclusively for CIDE by nationally renowned choreographers Eddy Ocampo, Derek Reid and Ashley Walton. The national festival for dancers will be held May 2 to 6 in Phoenix.

“The chance to work with these type of choreographers is an amazing experience for the dancers,” CIDE Artistic Director Suzann DeLay said. “Of the three pieces, one of them has been selected to go on to our national festival.”

Burdick said the national festival gives the CIDE the chance to perform in front of nationally recognized choreographers and ballet directors from across the U.S.

“It gives us the opportunity to showcase what we’re doing here in Indiana,” Burdick said. “It gives our seniors an opportunity to dance in front of different universities, so if they want to dance, it gives them the chance to perform in front of those people.”

“This gives our dancers a chance to learn and interpret a very renowned piece,” DeLay said.

There will be a silent auction, starting at 2:30 p.m., at Mixed Rep to raise funds for the Phoenix trip.

Mighty Mushroom Blended Burger Submitted photo and content courtesy of Family Features Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: 1/2 pound any variety mushroom, 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided, 1 pound ground beef, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 4 buns Directions: Finely dice mushrooms or gently pulse in food processor.

In skillet, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil on medium-high heat and add mushrooms, cooking 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes.

Transfer cooled mushrooms to medium bowl. Add ground beef and salt, mixing until combined. Make four patties.

Add remaining olive oil to pan and cook burger patties on medium-high heat until

internal temperature reaches at least 160 F. Plate and add desired toppings to bun.

The goal was to design two areas that work together to create function and flow for this high-traffic area.

1. The updated laundry room offers fresh lines, easy to maintain granite counter tops and multiple built-in folding areas.

2. The mudroom area was redesigned to specifically suit the family’s needs. Cabinet drawers were installed below, doubling as a bench. In the center, the family needed open cubbies with hooks for coats and bags. The closed cabinets above add a versatile storage option.

3. The drum pendant light for this space gives the laundry room a causal, yet modern feel.

4. A bold, contrasting, sliding barn door provides a visual barrier between the two areas, while maximizing the usable space.

This is the perfect solution for this clean, functional space.

Before Background Info: This house is in the Village of West Clay in Carmel. Even though it was built in 2004, it lacked the functionality and convenient features that a busy family needs in a custom, updated mudroom.

Before problems: Common characteristics of intermediate spaces is that they are not used efficiently, which creates multi-purpose areas that become crowded and hard to maintain. The owners wanted to redefine their laundry room and mudroom into clean, functional and efficient areas that work together.

Red Fort: Symbol for India’s glorious past Commentary by Don Knebel Shan Jahan is best known for building the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his favorite wife. His less famous Red Fort in Old Delhi, India, represents the epitome of Mughal travel architecture and has become a symbol of Indian independence.

Shan Jahan became the fifth Mughal Emperor in 1628 after the death of his father. With the Taj Mahal still under construction, Shan Jahan moved his capital from Agra to Delhi. In 1639 he commissioned a fortified palace and government center on a 250-acre site south of the Yamuna River that also passes behind the Taj Mahal. The fort was built primarily of red sandstone, providing its name. Subsequent Mughal buildings copied its distinctive style, combining architectural details from India, Europe and Persia. The Lahori Gate, the main entrance to the fort, is topped by seven white domes and flanked by octagonal towers, each topped with a dome.

In 1857, Indian soldiers initiated a rebellion against the rule of the British East India Company. The uprising failed and British forces occupied the Red Fort, where they put on trial Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal emperor. The British then used the fort as a garrison, damaging marble buildings inside the walls. Many of the treasures of the Red Fort, including the last
