Accidental gun discharge — On Feb. 25 at approximately 8:15 p.m., probationary merit deputy Nick Bonds with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office had an accidental gun discharge while attempting to holster his weapon. The incident occurred in the basement of the Sheriff’s Office and no one else was present. No one was injured in the incident. BCSO is conducting an internal investigation.

Zionsville Community High School senior Jack Franzman always will savor these memories.

SWIMMING “My time with Zionsville has been so much fun,” Franzman said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I can look back at my high school career without any regrets.”

Franzman captured his sixth state title by winning the 100-yard freestyle in 43.70 seconds at the IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals Feb. 24 at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI. “It was fantastic getting to go out on top in an event I have trained incredibly hard in,” he said. “The key to my 100 free win was really wanting to get at least one title my last year.”

Franzman, who will swim for Indiana University next season, set a personal-best time of 19.74 seconds in the 50 freestyle in finishing second to Carmel’s Drew Kibler, who won in 19.50. Kibler set a state record in Friday’s prelims in 19.38.

Franzman’s previous best time was 19.85.

“This was very much a case of Drew and I pushing each other to do our best,” Franzman said.

Franzman joined seniors Alex Sampson and Andrew Schuler and sophomore Coleman Modglin on the Eagles’ second-place 200 medley relay team.

As a junior, Franzman won the 50 free and was on the winning 200 medley relay at the state meet. He won the 50 and 100 freestyles his sophomore year. Franzman, who transferred from Brownsburg to Zionsville after his freshman season, was on Brownsburg’s winning 200 freestyle relay at the 2015 state meet.

After finishing second in the team standings the last three years, Zionsville placed third this year. Carmel won the team title for the fourth consecutive year.

Missing casket found after a week

Citizen academy launched

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsvillec.om The Zionsville Fire Dept. will soon offer an insider’s look at life as a firefighter.

ZFD Deputy Chief of Operations Brian Miller PUBLIC SAFETY said ZFD was looking for ways to open its doors and let people learn more about the department. Although ZFD does a lot of events for children throughout the year, the ZFD Citizen’s Fire Academy will offer adults a hands-on experience in fire operations, fire behavior and the science behind fighting fires.

The program will help answer questions like why a firetruck comes along for an EMS call; what it takes Miller to assist a patient in cardiac arrest; and the physics behind how fire travels.

Participants will learn about the history of ZFD and its stations and have opportunities to get hands-on experience with the equipment ZFD uses every day. They will view a live fire demonstration and auto extrication demo and have the chance to operate fire hoses and firefighting power tools.

“It’s a chance for (residents) to get insight, a behind-the-scenes look at the fire dept. that serves our community,” Miller said.

The six-week program, taught by local firefighters, will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays March 13 to April 24, excluding April 4.

Classes will be at the Zionsville Town Hall and Zionsville fire stations.

Interested candidates can apply for the academy at zionsville. in.gov. The academy is free and available to Zionsville residents 18 years of age and older.

After nearly a week of wondering, a Fishers woman has received closure after learning that her father’s missing casket has been found in a local cemetery.

BURIAL Sandi Vasel was shocked after her mother’s funeral Feb. 21 when Lincoln Memory Gardens cemetery in Whitestown informed her they could not locate her father’s casket.

Vasel’s mother was to be laid to rest beside her father, who was buried in the cemetery in 2006. But when cemetery staff opened what was meant to be a grave site for both of her parents, her father’s casket was missing. Because his casket could not be located, Vasel was forced to delay her mother’s burial rather than bury her without her late husband.

Vasel said Lincoln Memory Gardens located her father’s casket Feb. 26. She said the casket was found “in an unmarked grave about two rows over” from where her father was supposed to have been buried. His casket has now been placed in a mausoleum beside his wife’s, while Vasel’s family decides what to do regarding her parents’ burials.

“We’re just very glad that it’ll be taken care of now,” Vasel said.

Lincoln Memory Gardens could not be reached for comment.

Grant allows teacher to travel abroad

By Dawn Pearson • news@currentzionsvillec.om At a young age studying violin, Ashley Ray learned how powerful and inspirational music can be.

Ray is the Zionsville Middle EDUCATION School orchestra director. She also is the adaptive music teacher, United Sound club advisor, Strolling Strings club advisor and Zionsville Community High School musical pit orchestra director and is one of 100 teachers in Indiana to awarded a 2018 Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship.

Her competition was steep, as 540 people applied for the fellowship, which gives K-12 educators the opportunity to restore their love of learning by providing financial support and encouragement to renew their commitment to education.

Ray’s proposal, “Exploring Romantic Nationalism in Slavic Countries,” earned a $12,000 grant to support a project of personally and professionally fulfilling activities.

Ray, an Indianapolis resident, will use the funds to spend June traveling Russia and the Czech Republic.

After experiencing the music, art, history and culture of those nations, Ray expects to better understand the national musical influence of famous composers and appreciate the deeper meaning of the music her students perform in orchestra class.

Teaching orchestra opened her eyes to how powerful music can be.

“Throughout my teaching, I have heard so many students say that learning to play an instrument has been one of their greatest accomplishments,” she said. “Students tell me that music helps them work through their anxiety, stress or other uncertainty in their life.”

Ray started her musical journey in Illinois learning to play the violin and switched to the viola while attending Carmel High School.

J-Term sends students abroad

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsvillec.om Instead of attending classes as usual, University High School students spent January delving into topEDUCATION ics of interest through programs that included visits to Uganda, Hong Kong, France, Italy, Austria and elsewhere.

The UHS program, called January Term, gives students a three-week, in-depth, real-world look at topics such as genetics, “Dante’s Inferno” and sustainable living.

Brett Krieble, a Zionsville resident and assistant director of Learning Support Services at UHS, said the goal of the program is to expand the hearts and minds of UHS students.

UHS senior Becca Elliott said January Term is an amazing opportunity. During her freshmen year, she focused on making things by hand, such as cheese, soap and clothes, and visiting a local cheese factory and local independent stores. Her sophomore year, her January Term focused on the National Parks and included hiking the Smoky Mountains. During her junior year, she was certified as a wilderness first responder, which led her to a career path in recreational therapy.

Wes Priest and nine other UHS students studied “The Effects of Media and NGOs on African Society: A Ugandan Service Trip.”

During their adventure, they learned about the history of Uganda, the structure of nonprofit organizations, Ugandan conservation and wildlife and visited the Red Cross.

The last week of January, students traveled to Uganda, where they painted a preschool, peeled potatoes and fetched water alongside women from the Ugandan village of Laliya. They also cooked a traditional Acholi meal, met a man who was kidnapped and escaped the Lord’s Resistance Army, visited the Red Cross in Uganda and learned about the nonprofit organization Surface Uganda.

“J-Term really offers the experience of going deep into something that you are care about and really expanding your mind on something you really care about or maybe that you didn’t know you cared about until you take the class,” Elliott said.

Elliott turned 18 during the trip and had a birthday party on the Nile River surrounded by hippos, crocodiles and classmates.

Krieble, who proposed and led the trip, said the program helps students explore a topic they wouldn’t typically have time to explore in a traditional classroom setting.

“It impacted all of their lives,” Krieble said. “They all want to go back.”

This is the time of year I would enjoy driving through Vermont. The land, locked in the grip of winter for so long, PLAIN TALK is finally awakening. And as Mother Nature stirs, sap from the maple trees starts to flow.

In a matter of days the entire New England countryside will smell of hardwood smoke and the perfume of burnt sugar.

Gathering buckets, hung from thousands of trees, will be collected and emptied daily.

Men, women and children will man the fires and bottle the trickle of syrup in an everincreasing frenzy.

It’s a short season; perhaps the briefest of all of man’s endeavors. In a matter of a few galloping weeks, the sap will stop flowing, the trees will leaf out, the cooking fires will die and the treasure trove of maple syrup will be stored in packing cases headed for store shelves and our breakfast tables.

To be sure, Vermont is not the only place that produces maple syrup. It’s just the state best known for it. It’s the highlight of what Vermonters call the Mud Season, when spring thaw turns the roads to axeldeep goo.

We made maple syrup when I was a kid living in the north woods of Wisconsin.

Years later I managed to squeeze a few ounces from a dozen sugar maples on my farm in Minnesota. And soon after moving

into our present home, I tapped the maples in our backyard and saved the sugary sap in a cooler on our screened-in back porch.

Over several weeks I had collected about 15 gallons of sap. Alas, our son, who was living with us at the time, thought it was water from melted ice left over from our Christmas get-together and dumped it. I never tried again.

While Vermont is the leading maple syrup producer in the United States, with about 6 percent of world exports, Canada dominates the market. Quebec alone produces 70 percent of the world’s maple syrup, a $360 million business.

Last year, Canada produced 19 million gallons of syrup. At a sap-to-syrup ratio of 40-to-1, the sap alone would fill a lake large enough to demand a name.

It’s only fair to give credit to the American Indian for coming up with maple syrup in the first place. It was a festival celebrated at the first full moon of spring. New World settlers started making maple sugar around 1680 as a substitute for pricey cane sugar that came from the West Indies.

A sweet story that now has me thinking about pancakes. And waffles. And French toast.

“Habitat has three pillars. You have to have a need. You have to have a job or some source of income to pay back a mortgage,” she said. “Our most important pillar is that they have to put sweat equity back into the house. They have to partner with us and put in 200 hours.”

Books and Brews Zionsville general manager Justin McIntosh said the business wanted to be involved to help the local community.

“It’s very important for us as a business to actually reach out to local communities to help fund projects like this one,” he said. “We want to be a place the community can be proud to have in their community. We’re definitely devoted to Zionsville groups and charities. The more that we can get involved, the more we can better serve the community.”

Commentary by Terry Anker For some, reading and study is the key to all things. For others, experience is required to achieve adequate understanding.

Still, for most of us, we construct a reasonable composite of the two. We read, then do, then read a bit more and repeat. During the span of a long lifetime, we come to accumulate a conception about which things are best experienced blindly and which absolutely require some preparation.

American author Heidi Murkoff can claim the sales of more than 19 million copies of her iconic book “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” First-time parents around the world (and more than a few who are taking a refresher course) have found preknowledge imperative to managing the process. Like most successful ventures, this one has inspired countless sequels and imitators. The “What to Expect” series has sold tens of millions of copies and is published in more than 30 languages.

Is there a seminal book for each precipice in life? Is there one that will make our transition to marriage, pet ownership or midlife better understood? And, can we learn to “expect” all of the future machinations yet to come? It may be more fun to plan for an upcoming wedding than to adjust to life after divorce or death, but can’t we learn and prepare for either with the same sense of nervous anticipation?

There is a certain power to be found in knowing, preparing and practicing.

But with it can come a sense of anxiety, insecurity and worry. If ours is life everevolving, isn’t it better to embrace it expectantly, not begrudgingly? It may be the only choice we have.

READER’S VIEW Disappointed but not surprised Editor, I’m disappointed, but not surprised, that Zionsville — the town I’ve lived in for decades — again is not supportive of new development. My neighbor, who owns Wolf Run Golf Club, put forth a beautiful plan to transform the golf course property into a neighborhood that today’s homeowners are demanding.

The new Wolf Run Community is a walkable neighborhood, filled with lowmaintenance homes for empty nesters and estates for families with some of the most beautiful land in central Indiana reserved for open space with nature trails.

The trails and parks are an asset to the entire community of Zionsville, but the economic benefits are much greater.

More than $2 million in property taxes would be collected from the homes alone. Currently, less than $20,000 a year in property taxes goes to Zionsville and Boone County from the golf course.

The other benefit that the Wolf Run development brings to the area is muchneeded utilities (water and wastewater treatment), facilitating commercial development around the airport, enabling use of the contiguous school property and increasing property values in the entire area.

I’ve seen residents since the 1970s re-

sist change and the development of new homes. It is a reputation that I had hoped our town had shed. But when the Zionsville Plan Commission voted recently against giving the Wolf Run petitioner more time to refine the plan and instead voted for an unfavorable recommendation to the town council, this signals that we may be stuck in our old ways.

Soon, the town council will consider whether the petitioner is able to move forward with the Wolf Run Community.

All the modifications the petitioner was in the process of making will not be considered.

The petitioner valued the input he received from the neighbors of Wolf Run – so much so that he was making drastic modifications compared to what was in the original plan. He was removing the commercial area, eliminating apartments, reducing the number of homes, addressing traffic concerns, moving an entrance and reviewing drainage.

It is clear he is committed to building a new neighborhood that all of us could be proud of as well as provide a tremendous economic boost to Zionsville. I strongly urge the Zionsville Town Council to vote in favor of allowing a new neighborhood at Wolf Run. John (Jay) Parks, Zionsville

A former neighbor has been bugging me to spice things up a bit (yes, you, JM!), so here goes nothing. As an HUMOR educator, I find the prospect of arming teachers utterly ridiculous. You can agree or disagree, but trust me when I say we are the last people you want packing heat.

First, most schools are already prisonlike. We sentence kids to 12 years of highly structured days where they can’t even use the restroom when they want. If you add a bunch of armed guards, aka “teachers,” you’re only a barbed-wire fence away from Shawshank High. I prefer not to work at a state penitentiary, and I certainly don’t want my own children incarcerated in one (Wilson Family goal No. 6: Avoid penal institutions at all costs!). I’m there to teach, not to patrol the halls with my Glock.

Second, most teachers would make terrible shots. I took a handgun class a few years ago in preparation for the zombie apocalypse and also have spent time with my husband, Doo, an avid hunter, “learnin’ me some rifle shootin.’” If I had an hour or so, I could maybe load the thing, fire off a few rounds and hit a paper target, perhaps once. Unless someone plans to send me to sniper training and offer professional development sessions in marksmanship every week for the rest of my career, I will not be effective in a crisis situation. My medium is chalk, friends, not bullets!

Obviously, something must change in our nation, and we need to engage in conversations about meaningful, realistic solutions.

But trust me, arming teachers is not the answer.

Spring into these gift ideas Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just received my greatly anticipated spring edition of the “Hammacher Schlemmer” catalog, which provides HUMOR a new opportunity to skewer their latest array of gifts.

The HS catalogs always begin with a letter from the chairman, John MacArthur. This issue’s introduction includes, “Discover our quality products, innovative products, products that are one of a kind, and unusual products…” One product they obviously don’t sell is a thesaurus.

Here are a few of my favorites from this spring edition: • The Year of Your Birth Folding Knife: There is a brand new uncirculated penny embedded in the handle that was minted in the year of your birth.

Murderers, you should avoid leaving a weapon like this behind, because it could help police identify you…unless you look great for your age. Or terrible.

• Voice Clarifying TV Speaker: This not only boosts the sound of dialogue but also “amplifies speech frequencies.” I have no idea what that means, but it might be the perfect gift for friends

who love British mysteries. They never know “who done it,” because they can’t understand a word the English actors are saying.

• The Silent Speaking Dog Toy: OK, hang on to your shih tzu. These are toys that make a soothing sound only your dog can hear. I think this is a fair question: How do you know when it’s broken? Or if it ever worked?

• The Barber Eliminator: Sadly, it’s not what I thought. It’s just an electric hair trimmer. I was hoping to find an easy way to tell the guy who’s been cutting my hair for 40 years that I’m ready to move on.

• The Gorilla in the Room: This is a 96-inch, inflatable PVC gorilla for those people who love the expression “800-pound gorilla in the room.” OK, this might be funny the first time your friends see it, but it will quickly become the 19-pound gorilla on eBay.

CHS grads sing winning tune

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com For as long as Molly O’Connor can remember, singing has been a central part of her life. She sang her first song before she took her first steps. She sang throughout grade school and junior high. She sang in show choir at CarMUSIC mel High School.

Now, she sings in an a cappella group at Ball State University that has qualified for a national competition.

“I’ve been singing since I could speak,” said O’Connor, a 2016 CHS graduate. “I was in choir for eight years and eventually was in the CarO’Connor mel Ambassadors as a junior and senior.”

Now, she sings in BSU’s mixed a cappella group, Sedoctave, which includes fellow CHS graduates Michael Robb, Cameron Cole and Jake Letts. Robb and Cole are senior telecommunications majors who sing bass. Letts is a freshman musical theater arts major who sings tenor. And O’Connor is a sophomore marketing and public Robb relations major who sings alto.

Last month, Sedoctave — for the second straight year — earned first place at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella Midwest Quarterfinal with a 12-minute rendition of “It Don’t Mean a Thing.” The group will now compete in the March 10 ICCA Midwest Semifinal at Washington University in St. Louis.

The winner of that event advances to the April 21 ICCA Finals at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.

“In the week leading up to the (quarterfinals) show we worked

so hard to bring our set together, so the first emotion I had was being so proud of what we had accomplished as a group,” O’Connor said. “It was so rewarding to see the hard work pay off, and I was happy to see everyone else so happy.”

O’Connor not only sings in the group, she is its assistant coordinator and is the public relations chair for BSU’s chapter of the Association of Collegiate A Cappella. Joining the organization was a priority when she arrived on campus.

“I’ve been a member of ACA since my first week at Ball State as a freshman,” O’Connor said. “I love the family I’ve found in Sedoctave, and I love the opportunity it’s given me to sing Cole outside of school work. I’m a double-major in marketing and public relations, so in college, for the first time in seven years, none of my classes had anything to do with music.

“It’s always been a hobby and an outlet for me, so Sedoctave has allowed me to keep that in my life in addition to my classes, and I am so grateful for that.”

Letts Cole, 22, is a four-year member of the group.

He also is its coordinator. In that role, he plans and schedules all performances and organizes all logistics.

“I have really enjoyed watching this group grow,” Cole said.

“When I started in Sedoctave my freshman year, the group was in pretty much its first year as well. Seeing the growth and all the friendships that I have made during my time has definitely been something I really enjoy.”

Carmel Rotary Club will host a live music event May 3 to raise money for community grants for local nonprofits.

Called “Rock with Rotary,” the charity event will be held at Kingston’s Music Showcase, 340 Ridgepoint Dr., Carmel. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m., and three bands will play.

First up is The 11th Hour, featuring 2018 Carmel Rotary President John Stanley. Next will be Phone Club featuring Carmel Rotarian Bryan Ferry. The final act will be Dwight Lightning and the Conch City All-Stars, a local band that was formed in 2014, which plays music described as “island/beach/gulf and western music.” They play hits from the 1960s to today and have performed at local events such as CarmelFest, the Carmel International Arts Festival, the Clay Terrace Summer Concert Series and more.

Documentary to premiere

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com David Scotton always knew he was adopted. He grew up in Louisiana and was told about his FILM birth parents in Columbus, Ind., but never asked too many questions.

It wasn’t until his birth mother, Melissa Coles, decided to update her Scotton contact information with adoption law firm Kirsh & Kirsh, which is located on the Indianapolis/Carmel border on 96th Street, that Scotton decided he might want to meet his birth parents.

Benjamin Clapper, executive director of Louisiana Right to Life, asked Scotton if it was OK if a documentary film crew followed his journey to Indiana to meet his birth parents. What resulted is a short documentary film, “I Lived on Parker Avenue,” which will premiere free online March 8. An Indiana premiere will be held March 14 at The Studio Theater in Carmel. Steve Kirsh, Carmel resident and partner at Kirsh & Kirsh, will attend, along with Scotton

and several others involved with the film.

Clapper said he was moved by Scotton’s story but views the documentary as showing the positive aspects of adoption rather than demonizing anyone who chooses abortion.

“I really see this as a pro-adoption movie more than an anti-abortion movie,” he said.

In the movie, Coles told Scotton she was worried that he’d hate her for giving him up for adoption, but he responded that he wanted to thank her for what she did.

Wine for an Easter menu Commentary by Elizabeth Morse The promise of spring is peeking through now and then. It’s not nice weather, but you can celebrate this WINEderlust transition with some lighter wines as we ramp up to patio season. The bottles I’m going to suggest also are great choices with traditional Easter meals.

Serving salad that features asparagus is a great first course for a spring meal. I’m planning to make one that has fresh goat cheese and toasted walnuts. Domaine Moreux “Cuvée des Lys” Sancerre Rosé is my suggestion. It is made from Pinot Noir grapes and reminds me of fragrant strawberries, cherries and apricots. The acidity is bright and could be paired successfully with a strawberry and spinach salad, too ($23).

Next up: salty-sweet baked ham. I like to glaze ham, which would make pairing a big red wine, well, not good. Those flavors tend to clash. I’m opting for a light, yet flavorful and zesty Lambrusco. I’m not talking about the super-sweet cheap stuff. Try this tasty

sparkler: Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce ($18ish). Great for family gatherings since it’s low in alcohol. An excellent choice with a great piece of Parmesan cheese, too.

The finale of my Easter meal is a bakerystyle white cake with vanilla frosting. It’s often decorated with hundreds of jelly beans and maybe a Peep or two. You can go two directions here. If you really like bubbles, go with Michele Chiarlo Nivole Moscato d’Asti. This is a terribly pretty and fragrant wine from Italy that is a bit sweet, $12 for a 375-millilitre bottle. If it’s a chilly day and you’re looking for something more serious, opt for Bodegas Dios Baco Elite Amontillado Sherry. This fortified wine is not Mama’s cooking Sherry. It tastes like butterscotch and hazelnuts with a dry finish ($20). Cheers!

The modern definition of luxury in outdoor living is being redefined. At least, that’s my bold observation.

OUTDOOR I haven’t read it on Twitter, L I V I N G haven’t “Googled” it and Big Brother Amazon is not pushing out products under that title. No blogs (until now) have touted this revolution/evolution, but I am.

Think about it. Our collective generations are again appreciating the habits of outdoor living. Living commenced predominantly on our updated decks, crushed stone paths, jazzy brick patios with fire features to warm our hearts and thriving landscapes for all to sniff at and smile with.

3 components I believe there are three very distinct components of luxury in outdoor living. This bold observation is based on the hope that the basics of an outdoor living space are already established: patio, landscape and furniture. Here they are.

Istanbul’s Tower of Flight Commentary by Don Knebel If your mental image of Istanbul does not include a 14th-century Romanesque hilltop tower overlooking a picturesque harbor, you probably need to revise TRAVEL your image. The cylindrical Galata Tower is also the site of a reported milestone in the history of human aviation.

In 1005 A.D., the once-poor Italian citystate of Genoa became the independent Republic of Genoa, with a fleet of ships sailing throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. The Byzantine Empire, with its capital in Constantinople, was one of Genoa’s major trading partners. To facilitate that relationship, in 1267 Genoese traders established a colony on a hillside area called Galata across the Golden Horn from Constantinople, overlooking the harbor where an estuary called the Golden Horn meets the Bosporus, the narrow strait forming the border between Europe and Asia. In 1348, as a part of a defensive wall surrounding their colony, the Genoese built a 207-foot tall tower they named Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) atop the hill from

which they could detect hostile forces approaching the harbor. In 1453, after a battle in which the Genoese were neutral, Islamic forces conquered Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul. The Galata Tower became a fire tower.

According to a 17th century report, a Turk named Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi, who had studied aerodynamics, strapped on wings he had copied from birds and flew from the top of the Galata Tower to a landing spot on the Asian side of the Bosporus, 4 miles away. In recognition of this first intercontinental flight, an Istanbul airport is named for Hezârfen.

The Galata Tower was restored in 1967 and is open to the public. For a fee, elevators carry visitors to a balcony just below the roof where they can get a spectacular panoramic view of Istanbul and the two continents on which it now lies.

The more I look at toward and towards, the more I’m convinced neither of them are real words. I think pretty much any word will do that to you. And shouldn’t toward and coward rhyme? I’m too scared to look into it; I think that makes me a toward coward.

It all depends on where you live. In British and Australian English, you’ll find people give a polite nod to towards over toward. However, in the U.S. and Canada, we independently and unabashedly use toward more often than towards. Technically, either are correct in any situation.

However, my rule is use whichever word sounds right in each situation.

The AP stylebook states toward is always correct and towards is always a syn-

tactical faux pas. While I appreciate the AP’s all-or-nothing approach, I don’t think it’s necessary to take a stand on every issue. Forgive me for my untowardness.

Is it weird that coward and towered rhyme? I think these words are messing with me. These two words could very well lead me to ward off either of these words from my writing for a year. In the same way American English prefers toward, the same rule works with other words related to direction, like forward, backward, downward, upward and afterward. To remember this rule, think about how Americans like our words like we like our drive-thrus: Shorter, faster, more convenient and more efficient. Taking an axe to the s to make a word one letter shorter is the American way. Does that make us seem backward, or are we moving toward an enlightened state of simplicity and brevity? Either way, it saves one letter on our Twitter character counts.
