Fire Station 92 remodel under way

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Fire Dept. began construction in January on the expansion of Fire Station 92, 998 U.S. 421. It is one of four fire GROWTH stations that serve the town.

The station originally was built in 2009 and is undergoing a 1,400-squarefoot addition that will provide additional storage and exercise space. The new areas are comprised of a 707-square-foot exercise room, a 273-square-foot locker room and a 420-square-foot fire gear storage room.

Additionally, 300 square feet of existing hallways, restrooms and locker rooms will be renovated.

“We take fitness extremely seriously,” Fire Chief James VanGorder said, adding that sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among firefighters. “(The exercise) room will provide ample (space) for all six firefighters working each day at the fire station to exercise.”

With three shifts at the station and six firefighters on duty per shift, the locker room expansion was necessary to accommodate all

18 of the station’s firefighters.

“The fire gear storage is a new room that will limit the amount of (ultraviolet) light,” VanGorder said.

Sunlight is a large factor in the weathering of turnout gear, which protects firefighters from biological hazards also while minimizing heat exposure. According to firehouse.com, harmful chemicals such as arsenic, phthalate plasticizers and flame retardants have been shown to accumulate on turnout gear.

“The (fire gear storage) room also keeps the gear farther away from the living space when not in use,” VanGorder said. “This is part of our healthier initiative.”

The updates to Fire Station 92 are expected to be completed in late May. ZFD has tentative plans to build an additional station on land it owns at the southeast corner of 875 E. and 400 S., though no timeline has been set. Two existing stations also will need updates in the future.

“We are also looking at ways to address an aging Fire Station 91, which has seen multiple maintenance issues over the years,” VanGorder said. “We are currently in the planning phase for a new Fire Station 81 for the future.”

Choir preps for final shows

In competitions Feb. 9 at Pike High School and Feb. 23 at Franklin Central, the Choralaires were named grand champions and the Royalaires were first runners-up at Pike and Grand Champion at Franklin Central.

“I think it provides a validation of their hard work and attention to detail,” said Aaron Coates, co-director of both ensembles.

The Choralaires is an all-women’s show choir made up of sophomores, juniors and seniors. The Royalaires is a co-ed show choir also made up of sophomores, juniors and seniors. Deana Broge is co-director with Coates.

The Choralaires and Royalaires have one competition left. It is March 9 at Lawrence Central High School.

The year-end concert, called “Finale 2019,” is set for May 10 and 11 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center.

Community Foundation awards $5K to HAND for expansion

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The Community Foundation of Boone County’s Community Impact Fund awarded a $5,000 grant to Hamilton HOUSING County Area Development, Inc., a Noblesville-based nonprofit addressing housing needs of low- to moderate-income families.

The grant will support HAND’s expansion into Boone County, which began April 2018 when it acquired the Hickory Commons development in Lebanon. The acquisition was 15-year-old HAND’s first project outside of Hamilton County.

“We recently expanded into Boone County and we were looking to build relationships and support there,” said Andrea Davis, HAND outreach and fundraising manager.

HAND already has invested more than $2 million into renovating Hickory Commons, which will provide 28 affordable housing apartments — 17 duplexes on two cul-desacs. To qualify for the housing, residents must earn no more than 60 percent of the median income for the area. “(The Hickory Commons duplexes) were built in the 1950s and in recent years have been rental properties,” Davis said. “Given their age, they were naturally more affordable. We were looking for opportunities to

make an investment, update (the homes) and make them more modern for the folks who live there.”

The CFBC grant will help HAND equip a community room at Hickory Commons, giving residents access to on-site services such as financial literacy and nutrition education classes.

With Boone County’s rapid growth, HAND wanted to stay ahead of affordable housing.

“A lot of people think, ‘Everybody’s rich, why would you need affordable housing?’

What we’ve seen is folks who have lived here a long time are getting priced out of the market,” Davis said. “The price of housing is going up much faster than household income.”

According to five-year estimates by American Community Survey, nearly 20 percent of Boone County homeowners and 44 percent of renters are considered costburdened, spending more than 30 percent of their household income on housing.

Davis said workforce development and housing affordability are mutually beneficial.

“As communities try to attract more business development, there’s a need for places for those workers to live,” Davis said.

“There’s a wide range of salaries with the jobs being created (in Boone County), but not a huge range of housing.”

Optimist Club to hold oratorical contest

By Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com Students will have a chance to speak their minds and practice eloquence at the Zionsville Optimist Club Oratorical Contest, set for 6 p.m. March PUBLIC SPEAKING 26 at Zionsville Community High School’s Old Auditorium.

The ZCHS competition is part of the larger Optimist International Oratorical Contest. The topic is “Is There a Fine Line Between Optimism and Reality?”

The ZOC is an extension of Optimist International, a worldwide volunteer organization of more than 2,500 local clubs with the mission to make the future brighter by bringing out the best in children and their communities. Optimist Club members conduct uplifting service projects throughout the year.

“The contest is designed for youth to gain experience in public speaking, perfect self-expression, gain self-assurance, improve communication skills and provide them with the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship,” said Tim Ottinger, contest co-chair.

Speeches will be judged on content and presentation, with winners receiving monetary awards and certificates.

The top winners will be eligible to move on to the zone level and then to the district level, with the opportunity to win up to $2,500 in college scholarships. Winners of the district competition will compete at St. Louis University in St. Louis, with a chance to win as much as $22,500 in scholarships.

The Optimist Oratorical Contest is one of the organization’s most popular programs, with more than 2,000 clubs participating annually. The ZOC has been active in Zionsville since 1981 and has participated in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for more than 15 years.

Changes have been implemented this year to streamline the contest, including removing gender categories.

“I believe it supports a growing and wider belief in gender equality overall,” Ottinger said.

ZIONSVILLE/WHITESTOWN Lane closures began in February to repair a damaged bridge beam CONSTRUCTION on I-465 over I-865 on the northwest side of Indianapolis in Boone County. Rieth Riley is the state’s prime contractor for this $354,512.82 bridge repair contract that calls for heat-straightening the facia steel beam under the left lane of southbound I-465 where it overpasses I-865. This will require closing I-465’s northbound ramp to westbound I-865 and detouring westbound motorists via eastbound I-465 to U.S. Highway 421/Michigan Road where they will reverse direction to westbound I-465. In addition, the southbound left lane of I-465 and a single thru-lane on I-865 will be closed to facilitate repairs. Weeknight restrictions will be in effect between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Should work be scheduled through weekends, closures will begin at 9 p.m. Fridays and continue through 6 a.m. Mondays. I-465 has a traffic count of 42,240 vehicles per day. I-865’s traffic count is 20,238 vehicles per day.

CARMEL Range Line Road is closed southbound between Eighth Street to just south of Clay Terrace for installation of a stormwater collection system and pedestrian connectivity. The city expects to finish the project this spring.

Lane restrictions are under way near Keystone Parkway and 96th Street, where a new roundabout interchange is under construction. Work is expected to last through the year.

Burning question about candles Commentary by Ward Degler Has anyone ever written a book about candle making? I wondered about this when I was cleaning out a couPLAIN TALK ple of neglected shelves in my studio and came across several mostly used-up candles.

The discovery made me realize there’s a cabinet in the living room that has a drawer filled with candles. And another one in the guest bedroom. I think there also might be some candles in the kitchen in what we jokingly call the utility drawer. Actually, it’s the place we dump anything that won’t fit anywhere else.

Who came up with the idea of putting a string in a glob of wax and lighting it in the first place? Maybe it was an accident, like when lightning struck a dinosaur and set the woods on fire, creating the first candlelight dinner for Mr. and Mrs. Caveman.

Earliest records have the ancient Romans making crude candles from papyrus wicks and tallow. It wasn’t the best light and the tallow smoked and stunk clear down to the Forum. Caesar and the high-rent crew burned candles made of beeswax, which was much brighter and cleaner. Of course, beekeeping wasn’t a thing back then, so beeswax candles were expensive and in short supply.

For the next several centuries, candle making droned on without much progress.

But things changed dramatically in the 1700s, when the whaling industry was in full flower. It seems Moby Dick was rich in oil that could be boiled down to a clear wax

that was ideal for making candles.

But just when things were looking good for candle makers, the whales got fished out and sperm whale oil was suddenly hard to come by. Fortunately, about that time, a French chemist whose name has been forgotten discovered how to make candle wax by extracting stearic acid from animal fat.

This wax was malleable enough for someone to invent the first machine to massproduce candles.

But, wouldn’t you know it, just when folks were getting comfortable with this development, someone else discovered paraffin, a wax byproduct of the emerging petroleum industry. It was ideal for making candles.

Ever since, candle makers have been pouring wax by the gallon and making candles of every size, shape and fragrance.

You can’t walk through a shopping mall, gift shop or gas station without coming face to face with a display of candles.

That said, out in the Mission Hills District of San Diego, there is a quiet little shop that in direct defiance of centuries of progress does nothing but make candles by laboriously dipping strings repeatedly into pots of melted beeswax.

If anybody ever does write a book about candle making, they probably should talk to these folks.

Four times a year, regardless of weather, Saint Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church in Zionsville collects food for The Caring Center in Lebanon. On those occasions, the church asks the entire parish to bring a bag or two of groceries to weekend Mass. On the weekend before, the church passes out black cloth bags for parishioners to fill and gives them a shopping list of items requested by The Caring Center. The church parks The

Caring Center truck near the front door of the church, and churchgoers simply drop off the groceries as they head in to Mass. In all, the church collected approximately 3,200 pounds of food Feb. 9 and 10. Besides collecting food, the church conducts a blanket and coat drive, collects holiday gift donations, prepares children’s birthday boxes and provides volunteer support for The Caring Center.

Women take the lead in several growing Zionsville businesses

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Female entrepreneurship is growing across the nation, and Indiana is one of the more fertile places for womenowned businesses.

A study commissioned by American COVER STORY Express revealed that four out of every 10 businesses are owned by women and reflected a 58 percent growth rate during the past decade. Moreover, the study showed Indiana is among the top 10 states with high “economic vibrancy” for female-owned businesses.

Zionsville’s zWORKS co-working space has been a starting point for many female entrepreneurs, thanks to the availibility of 24-hour resources.

“Although starting a new business is incredibly hard, doing it on your own time in your own way is really valuable to women,” zWORKS Executive Director Kate Swanson said.

Drawing small businesses to Zionsville and keeping them is one of zWORKS’ goals, Swanson Swanson said. The co-working space is especially ideal for local women balancing home, career and family. Maintaining that balance can help hone skills needed for a startup.

“You have to know how to ruthlessly prioritize your life,” said Megan Glover, co-founder and CEO of 120WaterAudit in Glover Zionsville. “I think that gives you a different lens.”

Glover believes there can be higher expectations for females looking for business investors.

“I definitely felt the bar was very high in terms of how buttoned-up the idea, the vision, the focus, the pitch.

No room for error,” Glover said.

Glover’s fast-growing company has moved from a conference room in zWORKS in 2017 to a dedicated building with 18 employees in Zionsville.

Glover recognizes those starting new businesses need access to as many resources as possible.

“It’s little things,” she said. “It’s all about that ecosystem, in addition to the tangible benefits. Every dollar matters.”

With her company growing 280 percent last year, Glover expects to achieve even loftier goals in 2019.

“We know who we are, what we do and we have the products to back it up,” Glover said.

Glover said that those seeking funding in technology, entrepreneurs in the Midwest are expected to be prepared with more detail versus those on the West Coast.

encountered that issue with her website for tiny house rentals.

“Central Indiana has done a great job of trying to create an environment that makes it easier to start a business,” Daniels said.

The connections Daniels has made at zWORKS have helped her expand her business.

“Not just social interaction, but the types of people, the energy, being able to bounce an idea off of someone who I may not have encountered otherwise,” Daniels said.

Daniels joined zWORKS thanks to a sponsored membership through the Boone County Economic Development Corp.

“That was a pivotal opportunity for me,” she said. “It’s hard in the beginning to figure out how the first few dollars are spent.”

Debb Beck, CEO of Pave Medical, agrees that as a fledgling company it can be a difficult decision to determine where to spend the few dollars a startup may have.

Beck hasn’t noticed gender-bias in her role but believes that could be due to her industry being focused on product quality.

Pave Medical is renting one of the conference rooms of zWORKS while it continues product development in anticipation of a 2020 launch. The company has created a tool for extracting a larger amount of tissue in lung cancer patients, which minimizes the need for a second biopsy. The business began in 2016 when US Biopsy was sold.

“All three of us are really passionate about reducing suffering,” CEO Debb Beck said of her team.

Although zWORKS doesn’t track gender, Swanson estimates that female business ownership at the co-working space is moving toward 50 percent. She recognizes that many of the business members are at different stages, but that’s what makes zWORKS special, especially when

she’s able to help a business graduate to a larger building.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than watching the progress of what you’ve been working on,” Swanson said.

FEMALE LEADERS OFFER TIPS FOR BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS • Surround yourself with those who can offer advice or feedback. Megan Glover said there is a lack of experienced female mentors, but females also can utilize a growing network of women.

• Find a peer group. Starting a new company can be isolating. Maggie Daniels is involved with a female entrepreneurial group and Debb Beck is part of a CEO club. “We can understand each other’s challenges, people you can trust who can maintain confidentiality,” Beck said.

• Be adaptable. Glover’s company has evolved from water testing into a software company. “We didn’t set out with that vision in mind,” Glover said.

• Think of decisions from all angles. “Sometimes we make a short-term decision but it hurts us in the long term,” Beck said.

• Help others, and yourself, shine. Daniels noted that women may not always tout their successes, especially when looking for investors. “It’s not the time to be humble,” Daniels said.

• Confer with others for advice. “When you’re starting, you don’t know what you don’t know,” Daniels said.

Leaning upon those who have experience can offer helpful perspectives, even from other industries.

• Be fearless – know there will be criticism. “For every good meeting there will probably be a bad meeting,” Glover said. “What can I learn from that?”

LETTER Shoe collection a success

Do the math Commentary by Terry Anker Our daily lives are overflowing with data. Yet, in a somewhat alarming development, most of us are more confused than ever. How do we make sense of the competing, incongruent and often intentionally open-ended assertions in which modern society finds itself steeped? How do those “in-theknow” arrive at their assumptions?

How do they use the information to find their assertion of outcome?

The challenge here is that most talking heads foist upon the unsuspecting and willing public equations of “how to fix the world” with too many unknown variables. Every eighth-grade math student will tell you that such cannot be resolved.

First, one must know which elements are required, then conform to a definition for each, and finally determine a specific outcome that we might hope to reach if we solve the equation.

For others to understand our thinking, one must begin from a place that assumes the position of the listener, not the speaker. If the listener does not have enough information, wouldn’t it require that the speaker include it in the originating message?

One should identify all the variables and then, in time, solve each before turning in the assignment.

Understandably, some don’t want to do the homework. They push the problem-solving responsibility off to the reader. Open-ended equations invite further interrogatory and leave too much to assumption.

If we were to review our messages in advance of sending them from the perspective of the reader, how much could we improve our communication? And, if we spent a bit more time on designing the equation before attempting to solve it, would we get to better outcomes?

Sweet dreams aren’t made of this Commentary by Danielle Wilson I don’t know what is going on inside my head lately. I had a dream last night that went from my grappling with HUMOR a personal case of head lice while babysitting a couple of pre-teen strangers to me at a parade where deceased friends and family were stopping to say hello.

I didn’t awake until the zombie horde forced a semi off a bridge next to where I was standing. I asked my husband Doo what he thought these visions meant, and he responded with a short monologue of Sigmund Freud emphatically telling him to “Get out. NOW.” Hilarious.

Doo also reminded me that I had left a bathroom drawer open, wide enough so that when he stumbled in this morning, he clocked his left thigh so hard he now has a noticeable bruise. I vaguely recall rummaging for Advil around 4 a.m. while peering through a window to determine if a tornado

was afoot. I guess the screaming wind and the dead-people visits distracted me from closing up shop, so to speak.

All this is to say that clearly I have too much on my plate, at least subconsciously.

As I type, I am mentally listing today’s “chores” along with work and family “stuff” that needs to be addressed in the near future. But what’s a mom to do? Ignore parenting, wife-ing, teaching, cleaning, managing, shopping, disciplining, exercising, planning, living altogether?

I’m certain the spicy food and the devil/ vampire shows aren’t helping, but in my defense, have you watched “Lucifer” yet?

Terrible, but oddly alluring. So, I’ll just have to deal with the crazy dreams and hope life settles soon. Peace out.

Editor, The Boone County Solid Waste Management District completed its seventh annual shoe collection last week in which shoes are passed on to the Indiana nonprofit Changing Footprints. With 33 collection spots throughout Boone County, more than 8,500 pairs of shoes were collected during the two-week collection period! This is a record for the district’s collection as well as for Changing Footprints. Changing Footprint’s co-founder and board President Bob Broughton stated, “This is the largest-ever collection/donation for Changing Footprints! We cannot thank you enough for your work and support.”

Changing Footprints sorts the collected shoes and either redistributes to those in need (80 percent right here in central Indiana) or they are passed onto Nike for recycling. The Boone County Solid Waste Management District sees this as a win-win situation, helping others while keeping materials out of the landfill!

The district would like to thank all the community partners that hosted collection sites, especially our top three collectors: Western Boone Jr./Sr. High School, Milestone Contractors and Skjodt Barrett!

A different word for everything Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen and I are going to South America this fall and we decided we both should learn a little Spanish. I ordered HUMOR some language CDs but was having serious problems memorizing the vocabulary, so I got a stack of sticky notes and labeled everything in the house, like the chair (la silla), the table (la mesa), the door (la puerta) and the mirror (el espejo).

In Spanish, nouns are identified as masculine or feminine. This confounded me in high school and accounted for my low grades. The teacher said I had some gender confusion, which was the last thing I needed to hear right before I asked Darla to the senior prom.

When Mary Ellen got home and saw the notes, she wasn’t happy, but she wasn’t as ticked off as our cat (el gato) Angel, who kept walking in circles because of the sticky note on her tail. Angel also was unhappy to learn that “el gato” is a masculine noun. I tried to explain to her that there wasn’t a neuter pronoun, but that brought back a lot of bad memories for her.

to see who is making the most progress, but we are using different learning aids, like when we took dancing lessons and we each had our own teacher. We were dynamite with our own instructors, but dreadful together.

I realized Mary Ellen was only memorizing expressions that had practical value for her on the trip, like, “Ricardo, quiero ir a una tienda con ropa exclusiva.” I later found out this meant: “I want to go shopping at an exclusive clothing store.”

My only retort was using words I learned the previous night: Mi elefante tiene dos hermanas (My elephant has two sisters).

I think my wife will be able to employ her language skills better than I will.

Mary Ellen and I have been having a lot of fun learning a new language. However, we do have one concern. In a happy marriage like ours, the phrase, “And what exactly is that supposed to mean?” should not be uttered in every conversation.

Moontown reflects on first year, new menu

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Nearly one year ago, Whitestown gained its first brewery with the opening of Moontown Brewing ANNIVERSARY Company at 345 South Bowers St. The brewery will celebrate its first year in business from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. March 16 with a “One Year Anniversary & Customer Appreciation Day.” The event will feature special Moontown beers available that day only, $1 off pints, merchandise discounts, giveaways and free live music all day.

In just one year, Moontown has become a destination for beer, food and music. Its tight-knit staff and laid-back atmosphere is rooted in family, friendship and community.

Longtime Zionsville resident and commercial builder Pete Mattingly shared his love of brewing with his sons Patrick and Bobby, both graduates of Zionsville Community High School. After the family won first place in the inaugural Whitestown Beer Fest, former Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton facilitated a deal for the Mattinglys to turn the Bowers Street Gymnasium, then in a state of disrepair, into a brewery.

Pete’s company, MattCon General Contractors, managed by Patrick, custom-built the restaurant, brewery and event space while still preserving many of the building’s historic elements.

Patrick and Bobby then recruited close friend and veteran brewer Cody Peczkowski as head brewer and hired a well-vetted staff.

really important,” Bobby said. “That’s paid dividends, for sure.”

Moontown recently hired a new chef, Ian Tirmenstein, whose specialties include sustainably sourced seafood, smoked meats and farm-to-table cuisine. Bobby said Tirmenstein came highly recommended and, after seeing his skill set, hiring him was an easy decision.

With a large garden in the back and a chef and head brewer who source from many local farmers and vendors, Bobby said Moontown is a “from-scratch concept in every sense of the word.”

As growth continues, Moontown plans to extend hours and begin canning and distributing beers.

“We’re really happy with our first year,” Bobby said. “The moon’s the limit.”

Laundry service launches in Zionsville

NEW BIZ She thought she would solve the problem by starting her own laundromat in Zionsville, but one of her business-oriented friends told her she would never make her money back because most people don’t need laundromats.

That’s when Barrientos got creative.

“I wanted to change the industry and meet the market with what they need,” she said. “I started playing with that business plan, and last May I came up with some ideas and started a social media page, created a business page and started putting it (The Laundry Co.) out there.”

The Laundry Co. is a laundry concierge service, whereby Barrientos picks laundry up from a customer at their home. She washes, dries and folds it and then returns it.

Swift, Green combine for jazz concert at The Tarkington

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com It’s fitting that Veronica Swift combines musical forces with Benny Green.

Swift is the daughter CONCERT of late bebop pianist Hod O’Brien and jazz vocalist Stephanie Nakasian. Swift, 24, has been performing since she was 9 years old.

“Of course, it is a great honor to play with Benny Green, a bebop messenger and someone who possesses so much of the lineage at his fingers,” Swift said. “My dad and Benny toured together back in 2007 as part of the ‘100 Gold Fingers Tour,’ and since then I have been a fan of Benny’s.

I remember meeting him when I was around 12, and now getting to play with him, it’s like completing the circle “ Swift and the Benny Green Trio will perform at 8 p.m. March 8 at The Tarkington in the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Green, a pianist and composer, has toured and recorded with jazz icons like Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Betty Carter and Freddie Hubbard. Green was a member of Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

“What Benny and I do, and what I am known for is, of course, doing classics from the Great American Songbook and also bebop lines. Sometimes I sing as a horn, wordless,” Swift said. “But I am also known for taking more obscure jazz tunes not known by popular masses, or even modern theater tunes that aren’t in jazz repertoire, and making them sound as if they were written in the golden age of song.”

For Swift, jazz is second nature.

“Most people would think that this is a passion, that performing jazz is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Swift said. “This isn’t necessarily wrong, but how I explain it to people is I don’t think anything of it.

It’s just what I’ve known all my life. Are you passionate about speaking English?

It’s the same principle. You don’t think about it, but when you do, you wouldn’t change your roots for anything, and you’re thankful for what they teach you. My relationship with jazz is, metaphorically and

literally, my relationship with my parents.

It’s the core and base of my existence.”

As she gains experience, Swift said she wants to explore even more diverse arrangements and pull from different genres to add to what will become her own sound.

“Even finding songs that come out today and lyrical content that speaks to my generation and mixing it with the sound of Songbook,” she said. “That, to me, is what always keeps this music fresh.”

Swift performs regularly at New York City’s famed Birdland Jazz Club and ap-

pears regularly at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks. She was a 2015 prizewinner at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition.

Critics have compared her smooth style and scatting to Anita O’Day, June Christy and Annie Ross.

The concert is part of the Center for the Performing Arts Emerging Artists series, featuring performers who are on the rise or otherwise new to central Indiana.

Muresanu joins CSO for concert

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel Symphony Orchestra Music Director Janna Hymes is eager to renew her friendship with violinist Irina CONCERT Muresanu, on and off the stage.

“We’ve performed together probably 10 times all over the place,” said Hymes, in her second year as CSO conductor. “She is a wonderful musician. We have a very similar style of music-making, so it’s very easy. It’s a great collaboration.”

Muresanu will join CSO for the concert at 7:30 p.m. March 9 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Hymes said she doesn’t see Muresanu often because of their busy schedules, but they are still good friends.

“When we do work together and see each other, it’s just a wonderful reunion,” Hymes said. “I’m very excited to introduce her to the Carmel audience. She’s a fantastic musician and a great teacher as well.”

Muresanu is on the faculty of the University of Maryland and has taught at the Boston Conservatory and in the Harvard and MIT music department. She plays a violin that is 170 years old.

There will be three different pieces in the concert, opening with “Overture to Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II. Hymes said she expects the performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto” will be an audience favorite.

New Zealand’s historic house Commentary by Don Knebel The Treaty House in Waitangi, New Zealand is the nation’s most important historical structure, even though it was imported from Australia. Documents still TRAVEL important to the nation’s original people were signed there.

In about 1300 A.D., Polynesian seafarers first settled in what is now New Zealand.

When Europeans arrived, descendants of those original settlers had divided into not-always-cooperative tribes, collectively known as the Máoris. In 1833, England dispatched James Busby to the Bay of Islands to represent British interests in the international trading activities that had developed around a port in the area. Busby soon learned that the Máoris were being precluded from participating in this lucrative business because their ships did not fly a recognized flag.

In 1834, Busby invited 25 Máori chiefs from the North Island to his small frame residence, fabricated in Australia and shipped in sections to the port. The chiefs selected a flag comprising a cross and four stars on

a blue field. Busby then drafted a hand-written document recognizing The United Tribes of New Zealand as an independent state, authorized to fly the new flag.

On Oct. 28, 1835, 34 Máori chiefs signed what became known as the Declaration of Independence on the grounds of Busby’s house. In 1840, Busby brought the tribal chiefs back to his house, where, as leaders of The United Tribes of New Zealand, they signed the Treaty of Waitangi, establishing New Zealand as an English colony and granting perpetual rights to the Máoris.

The Treaty House has been restored to its original condition and includes a museum describing the events that took place in and around the house. The flag of The United Tribes of New Zealand flies from a flagstaff on the grounds, erected where the historic documents were signed, accompanied by the Union Jack and the flag of New Zealand.

An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.” -F. GRAMMAR GUY Scott Fitzgerald Legend has it that the exclamation point has its origins in the Middle Ages. At the end of a sentence in which a medieval copyist wanted to indicate or emphasize joy, he would write the Latin word “io,” which means “joy.”

Over time, the “i” moved above the “o” and the “o” became small enough to become a point, evolving into the exclamation point.

There’s an episode of “Seinfeld” where Elaine breaks up with her boyfriend after he doesn’t use an exclamation point when writing down a phone message for her. A Plenty of Fish Conversation Nation 2018 survey found that “58 percent of singles say bad grammar is a bigger turn off than bad sex.” Especially in an age where texting and messaging account for much of the communication between potential love matches, grammar and punctuation play a significant role in your love life.

So, what’s my point, already? Should we use exclamation points or should we prac-

tice total exclamatory abstinence, as F. Scott Fitzgerald suggested? According to the AP Stylebook, we should “avoid overuse of exclamation points. Use to express a high degree of surprise, incredulity or other strong emotion.”

Here’s my point on exclamation points: Don’t go crazy with them. In the same way that bolding an entire section of text, therefore, makes nothing important, dropping in exclamation points all willy-nilly makes you look like a person who has had a few too many espressos. Never use more than one exclamation point at the end of a sentence; it’s just unnecessary.

Doing so takes your rhetoric to DEFCON 1 and makes the reader think there’s a giant asteroid hurtling toward Earth.

I suggest discussing exclamation point usage early on in a relationship so that you can weed out someone whose punctuation habits aren’t compatible with yours.
