Reds catcher Barnhart enjoying flavors, friendliness of Zionsville

Tucker Barnhart grew up a Brownsburg Bulldog and is now best known as a Cincinnati Red, but the MLB catcher has chosen to put down roots in Zionsville where he lives in the offseason profile with his fiancé, Sierra Thompson, a research scientist at Dow AgroSciences.

“I love how quiet the town is,” Barnhart said. “I walk outside in the morning to get in my truck to run errands and people are always friendly.”

Around town, Barnhart, 23, reflects the town’s warm reputation. Lifelong Reds fans Nicole and Adam Roberts were thrilled to meet Barnhart at The Friendly Tavern, one of his favorite local dining spots. After learning of the couple’s love of his team, he brought in signed baseball cards for their kids, Campbell, 10, Gabe, 8, and Alex, 6.

“Tucker is one of the nicest and most humble ball players we’ve ever met. It just means so much to us to have him local and to be able to know him since we live here, too, and have heard all the great stories about him,” Nicole Roberts said.

One of those stories took place at Lion’s Park and is one of Barnhart’s favorite Zionsville memories.

“I was 12 years old and pitching in the Little League state tournament,” he said. “I faced 18 batters and struck out everybody.”

Dispatches Commission approves TIF area – The Zionsville Redevelopment Commission on Feb. 23 gave the final stamp of approval to plans to create the Oak Street Economic Development Area. Through tax increment financing, the town will use property taxes collected from an increase in the current assessed value in the area to renovate or build a new town hall and make other infrastructure improvements. The area includes the existing Town Hall property, Starbucks, the Quail Run apartments and other nearby parcels.

I-65 wrecks baffle officials

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com If it seems there are a lot of accidents on I-65 in Boone County, it’s not just in your imagination.

Last fall and winter transportation there were 208 accidents along that stretch of road versus 85 along a stretch of I-70 in Hendricks County with similar annual average daily traffic, according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielson said that the county and INDOT have tried to account for this difference for years.

“We could never explain why that stretch of road has a significant number of crashes,” he said.

The difference in accidents isn’t limited to winter.

In 2013 between May and October when weather shouldn’t have been a significant factor, there were 201 collisions on I-65 in Boone County compared to 83 wrecks along the similar stretch of I-70.

In 2005, INDOT installed cable barriers along a 13-mile stretch of I-65 in Boone County and a 21-mile stretch of I-69 to help reduce wrecks caused by vehicles crossing the median. During

the first eight months of testing, vehicles hit the barriers 69 times but did not pass through and no deaths or major injuries were reported. “[The cable barrier] decreased our fatalities significantly,” Nielsen said. “We were very happy to see that cable go up.”

After the cable barriers proved successful during a trial phase, INDOT replaced them with permanent concrete barriers. INDOT also added another through lane to improve the safety and mobility of motorists, said Debbie Calder, INDOT communications director. She noted that I-65 has eight interchanges versus three in Hendricks County, which could be a factor in the higher number of crashes.

But some of these accidents can be prevented by more careful driving. INDOT reminds motorists to slow down and pay special attention while traveling in work zones and to drive safely during snow and ice events in the winter months.

Zionsville offers safe space for Craigslist deals

The Zionsville Police Dept. has joined the Whitestown Police Dept. in offering a site on town property to conduct Craigslist police deals.

In Zionsville, the police department lobby is available for Craigslist buyers and sellers – who often do not know each other – to conduct a transaction. The area is constantly under video surveillance.

“People are free to come in and use the police lobby to meet in a safe location,” said ZPD Chief Robert Knox, who shared the plan with the Zionsville Metropolitan Board of Police Commissioners and members of the town council.

The police department lobby is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays. When the lobby is closed, people may meet in the parking lot, which is also under video surveillance at all times.

The Whitestown Town Council recently approved Town Hall as a public meeting place for Craigslist transactions. Both towns cite safety as the top reason in making a public space available for these types of transactions.

“It seems to be a useful community service that we are able to provide our residents,” said Dennis Anderson, Whitestown chief of police. “This is safer than meeting someone in an unfamiliar or remote location.”

from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. On holidays and after hours, people may conduct transactions in the parking lot. Both areas are monitored by video cameras at all times.

People conducting a Craigslist deal at the Zionsville Police Department or Whitestown Town Hall are encouraged to notify the front desk about the transaction.

Although rare, criminals have used Craigslist

to find and target unsuspecting victims. Craigslist transactions have been linked to assaults and even murder.

No matter when or where a Craigslist meeting takes place, Knox encourages all parties involved to use common sense.

“Their own security starts with them,” he said.

“Don’t go to someone’s house you don’t know, and don’t invite them to yours.”

Convenient cups have drawbacks Commentary by Ward Degler I helped clean up after a dinner event a few days ago and noticed that one trash bag was filled almost entirely with Plain talk Styrofoam coffee cups. That bag, I realized, would join countless others in a landfill somewhere where they would sit for the next hundred years or so contributing to air and soil pollution.

Foam cups started out as such a boon to coffee drinkers on the go when 7-Eleven stores came out with the first to-go coffee cup in 1964.

Up until then your take-with cup was paper and you wound up with blisters from carrying it.

Foam cups first showed up in the late 1950s, but they leaked so badly that you needed to stack two or more of them together if you expected to still have coffee when you got back to the office.

Styrofoam itself was trademarked in 1946

by Dow Chemical as the name of its insulation product. Polystyrene was first produced in 1839 by a German chemist but waited in the wings for more than a century for someone to find a practical use for it.

The whole idea of portable cups showed up in 1907 when a Boston lawyer by the name of Lawrence Luellen invented a paper cup for drinking water. He had spent years watching people get sick from sharing a common tin cup at the city water pump. His invention would become known

as the Dixie Cup. Luellen’s invention didn’t get much notice until the Spanish flu swept across the country in 1918, killing a half-million souls. After that, the disposable paper cup was here to stay.

Today foam cups are everywhere, and so are the hazards. Not a whole lot of thought went into it at first, but polystyrene is non-biodegradable and non-recyclable. Folks who have studied these things claim that 1,369 tons of foam products are dumped into landfills every day. The daily toll of coffee cups alone if laid end to end would stretch completely around the earth.

There are other problems with foam cups. The material reacts to many of the liquids poured into them and releases toxins into the drinks. Experts warn to never serve orange juice or lemonade in Styrofoam cups. The packaging industry addressed the contamination issue a few years ago by coming up with peanuts made from sorghum and corn syrup to replace foam peanuts. Meanwhile, Styrofoam products continue to be the fifth largest producer of toxic waste in the nation.

For my part, I’ll use the foam for insulating my house and carry my coffee around in my handydandy thermos.

Famed vintage scooter up for bid

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It looks like something you’d see in the movies, and that’s not too far from the truth.

On March 8, an aluminumswap meet clad scooter called a Decopod Bi-pod – the first of only four ever made – will go up for auction at the 2015 Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet at the Boone County Fairgrounds. The famous bike was featured in an episode of Storage Wars, and two bikes in the series have been featured on Jay Leno’s Garage.

The auction is part of the 2015 Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet, an annual event featuring vintage European and Japanese bikes, scooters and parts. Zionsville resident Rik Smits, organizer of the swap meet and former member of the Indiana Pacers, said that the event has been a big success since it began in 2012.

“We’ve had great turnouts for all the swap meets,” he said. “I’ve been able to sell a lot of bikes and a lot of parts, which is my main goal.”

The two-day event will feature vendors, food for sale and the opportunity for collectors from across the country to socialize and expand their collections by buying hard-to-find parts or placing a bid at the auction.

One of the other Decopod Bi-pods sold for $25,000 at auction, but Smits doesn’t expect the vintage scooter to go for that much this time around.

the Decopod Bi-pod, said the one up for auction at the swap meet is the crudest of the bunch since it was the first. He created it as a favor for a friend who had helped him with another project.

“It’s an older bike that was languishing around, and it just turned into this art project,” Grubb said.

“Then another guy wanted one and I had to build more. Each one is unique and different. There are no two Decopods that are exactly alike.”

When Kim Donovan moved to Zionsville several years ago, her family fell in love with the Zion Nature Center, which she called one of the town’s “hidden gems.” fundraiser To help promote the center and raise funds for its programs, Donovan – now president of the Friends of the Zion Nature Center – helped start NatureFest five years ago. The annual event returns March 7 this year and will include a hands-on education area, cake walk, crafts, face-painting, carnival games for kids and more.

The popular Sandfire Farms petting zoo will return for this year’s event, which is being held at Zionsville Town Hall.

“They have wonderful animals, animals that enjoy being touched,” Donovan said.

Volunteers will also be bringing their own pets so that attendees can get an up close look at a hedgehog, rabbit and Dumbo eared rat. The event is created and staffed completely by volunteers of the Friends of Zion Nature Center.

The money that’s raised from NatureFest primarily goes to the Creature Features program, which brings several speakers to the nature center each year to NatureFest speak about different animals.

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • annmarie@youarecurrent.com It’s not unusual to see student artwork on display in the hallways at local schools, but this month the entire community will get the opportunity to view the creativity of cover story Zionsville’s youngest aspiring artists at dozens of businesses on or near Main Street.

During Youth Art Month, more than 30 businesses and organizations will display a variety of work created by Zionsville Community Schools students of all ages throughout the school year.

“Art is important and necessary in public education,” said Sarah Zack, ZCS district coordinator for Youth Art Month and an art teacher at Eagle Elementary. “We bring Youth Art Month to our community each March to showcase our students’ talents and hard work, increase community understanding and interest in art and provide additional opportunities for individuals to participate in creative activities.”

Flynn Mixdorf, a senior at Zionsville Community High School, will be among the 350 students whose work will be on display during Youth Art Month. He enjoys painting with oil and is currently taking a second level ceramics class at ZCHS. He is eager for the community to have a chance to see the hard work put in by student artists this year.

“It’s great for young artists to have their work put on display, because it just makes you feel like you’ve really accomplished something when you see total strangers walking past your own display and stopping for even just a split second to take a closer look,” said Mixdorf, 18. “It’s really a great feeling to be involved in an art show, and it gives you the opportunity to see a lot of other people’s work on display, which is always a great inspiration.”

The beginning Communities across the country have been celebrating Youth Art Month for more than 50 years. The program was launched by the Art & Creative Materials Institute and the National Art Education Association in 1961 as Children’s Art Month. It became known as Youth Art Month in 1969 after organizers began including art created by secondary school students in the exhibitions.

Youth Art Month first came to Zionsville in 2011 when the Zionsville Fine Arts Department decided to showcase the importance of art education in public schools. Support for the program from the business community has continued to grow throughout the years.

ReStyled, a shop that specializes in restoring furniture, is not only displaying student art this month but will also host three free art classes open to the community. The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library will also offer free art classes on Saturday mornings throughout March.

Connie Odekirk, who founded ReStyled with her daughter-inlaw, said that getting involved with Youth Art Month made perfect sense for her business.

“It’s important for school-age kids starting from kindergarten all the way up to be exposed to art to understand the influence of art

and the creativity of it,” she said.

The organizers, teachers and students who participate in Youth Art Month are grateful for the support from local businesses and the opportunities it provides.

“The students get really excited when their work is on display and take a lot of pride in knowing that anyone in the community can view their artwork,” said Grace Fletcher, art department chair at ZCHS.

capable kids Jocelyn Swan, an eighth grader at Zionsville West Middle School, has experienced the value of art firsthand this school year as a recent surgery sidelined her from the sports field. She’s found her art class to be “therapeutic” and has learned to appreciate the ways a creative outlet helps many of her peers find their voice.

She believes Youth Art Month is important because it shows adults the creative power and potential of the next generation.

“Sometimes I feel like we’re underestimated, [that people think] we’re just kids playing around on their phones all day,” said Swan, 13. “The community can realize we’re not in bad hands and that these kids are capable.”

Fletcher sees proof of that every day in the classroom and is excited that the entire community will have the chance to check out the talents of Zionsville’s young artists this month.

“Many times our students are not recognized for their accomplishments in art due to the limited audience that is reached through school displays or social media,” she said. “For many students, the art classroom is the only place they feel comfortable expressing themselves. By submersing the community in art, it allows us to draw more attention to an important area of education.”

Zionsville students selected to share messages on internet safety

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Middle School seventh-grader Zac Worth will soon be coming to a TV screen near you, and it all started when he schools saw a flyer advertising the opportunity to be in a commercial. All he had to do was write a paragraph about internet safety for other youngsters.

“I love acting so I decided I wanted to be in this commercial,” Worth said. “So I wrote the paragraph, submitted it Worth and I won.”

Worth was one of three students from Zionsville Community Schools selected to film a message about internet safety in a public service announcement for Bright House Networks and Net Literacy’s Martine Students Speaking Out for Safety. Zionsville Community High School sophomore Victoria Martine and Zionsville West Middle School seventh-grader Alana Case-Brown were also selected from among several hundred student entries.

Worth said the announcement he read was part of what he wrote.

“They revised it, so it was better,” said Worth, whose message stressed the importance of internet safety on social media.

Case-Brown said her main point was not to reveal any personal information on the internet and to always know who is on the other end of the interaction.

“A lot of kids are getting into social media at a younger age, and sometimes they don’t know what to do and they do stupid things,” CaseBrown said. “I hope they can watch this and

Martine’s PSA advises students to be careful how they portray themselves on social media.

“I thought it was important that college and future employers will look at your (social media) account, if they don’t like what you see there is a good chance you won’t get the position you want in those places,” Martine said.

The PSAs will also air on Bright House Networks, SafeConnects.org and Net Literacy’s YouTube Channel throughout this year.

“We received hundreds of responses from students that wanted to share the advice that they had given to friends and younger siblings about how to be safe while having fun online,” said Dan Kent, Founder and Executive Director of Net Literacy, a student-founded and student-managed nonprofit. “When told from the perspective of youths, these safety videos resonate with teens and empower them to become more savvy Internet users.”

Here we are, treading water

The argument that we, as a nation, are not much better off financially than those were in the 1970s should be something to consider.

Americans for Limited Government, which we’re all for in practice, says one of the big head-scratchers inside the Beltway is politicians not understanding that the people they serve, the voters, believe they’re running in place. That means as incomes have risen, so, too, have prices. Voters believe that because it is, without a doubt, absolutely the case.

Here are some startling figures, courtesy of AFLG (and please feel free to draw your own conclusions): • From 1976 through 2013, inflation averaged 3.97 percent a year. Household median income grew ostensibly at 3.96 percent a year. So, while inflation has slowed since the late 1970s, so have wages.

• A look at the Freddie Mac home-price index will show residence values have grown nominally at 5.28 percent a year through 2013, compared with median income’s 3.96 percent.

• The cost of sending the kids to college has exploded at 5.5 percent a year, says the U.S. Department of Education (which we would appreciate being shuttered), and wages obviously trail that.

• The Kaiser Family Foundation points to a rise in the cost of a family health premium, which has risen at 7.6 percent a year since 2000, compared to household median income at just 1.7 percent a year since that time.

So as the feds continue to trumpet that the Consumer Price Index is historically low, especially in comparison to the “Great Inflation” of the ’70s, it doesn’t necessarily reflect the items on which we spend most of our dough: mortgages, rent, college loans and, now, mandatory health care. So, when your representative to Congress asks if you believe you’re better off now, tell him or her that you don’t know because all you’re doing is treading water.

Tailoring a custom

“Why are you so dressed up?” I’m confronted with the question routinely and take it in good humor – as I believe it is intended to be a mild jibe spawning from the interrogator’s own somewhat slovenly attire. The bigger question may be, why do we wear suits at all?

As I pull together these thoughts wearing a grey herringbone that’s pushing 15 years old, I realize it’s a bit worn but more than adequate to keep out the cold. The tie was a gift; but alas, the giver has been forgotten to time. The white shirt is from my favorite purveyor in Hong Kong, Jimmy Chen in the Peninsula Hotel; but, for the first time my attention is drawn to the slight fraying at the cuff from countless trips to the laundry, always with heavy starch. I remember ordering it on my first visit to that dynamic and booming city. The exact year eludes me, yet it was more than a decade ago. The shoes are relatively new.

A while back, I equivocated in my stance of per-

petually re-soleing and began to only allot those resources to the very best footwear. The rest, well, are put to rest as soon as the heels lose their shape.

So, back to the question. I’m wearing a suit in large part because I always have. It reminds me of civilization, and custom, and tradition, and seriousness. It’s not to impress. It’s not to intimidate. It’s not to seek comfort. And, it’s not to make a statement of personal superiority.

It’s a uniform. It signals that I’m ready to work.

It communicates that I respect you, our interaction, and myself enough to shave my face, shine the shoes, and tie a cravat. Isn’t that reason enough? It’s less about custom tailoring and more about tailoring a custom.

Four moms, three nights, two rooms, one foreign country . . . read on for a tale of the best girls’ trip ever! Or at least a pretty good one.

I’ll take credit for getting the ball rolling.

After plans with my own sisters failed to materialize, I presented the idea to my three local sisters-in-law. I needed a break from the cold and grey, and quite frankly, from motherhood and marriage. We debated between a high-end place in the Bahamas and a much-cheaperbut-decidedly-questionable resort in the Dominican Republic. The promise of warmer temperatures won out, and less than twenty-four hours later, I had us booked at an all-inclusive in Punta Cana.

Having never traveled to the DR, and because I’d been so busy with work, carpools and dead lizards, my preparation for international travel was limited to a spray tan and weather-check the night before. I had my passport, a credit card and a bikini, though; I figured I was set.

Turns out, a Spanish-English dictionary would have been extremely helpful, as we were the only Americans at the resort and our language skills were limited at best. (Dora can only get you so far!) Between the employees and the Russians and French Canadians, we were frequently in the dark as to what was happening or, as we soon discovered, what we were eating. The roughly-translated menu identified our meal one night as “Goat in Perfume”, “Rice with Best Meat,” and “Sweet Milk,” which by the way, was neither sweet nor milky.

Also lost in translation was my request for two adjacent rooms with double beds. At check-in, we learned we’d be staying three buildings apart and that SIL B and I would be sleeping together. We did have AC and hot water though, which unfortunately cannot be said of the other room. Sorry, ladies!

We ran short on cash because I was the only one who remembered to inform my bank that I’d be pulling pesos from an ATM, experienced extreme turbulence on our descents through both an ice and a tropical storm, and may or may not have landed ourselves on a fake Cuban cigar outfit’s hit list.

And yet, this was one of the funnest [sic] trips of my adult life. We enjoyed stellar people-watching (those tight European-style swim trunks are a hoot, especially on the elderly), hilarious conversations (How would Doo look in that thong Speedo?), and as many shots of what sounded like “Marijuana’s” as we could stomach, which sadly was only one. Best. Trip.

Editor, I came across a copy of this article in Current in Zionsville and (as kindly as possible) would like to comment on what was written to possibly correct some misconceptions. I believe that everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I respect this view on GMOs, but I am deeply concerned with lack of scientific evidence present in the article. There are also many stereotypes and false studies in the article that are written as truth. An example would be the claim that “GMO foods may cause cancer.” This study, as stated in the article, was conducted by Arpad Pusztai.

Editor, My name is Carolyn Woodruff, and I am an AP biology student at Zionsville Community High School. I am writing in regards to an article published in the Zionsville Current. I was startled to find several inaccuracies in the article titled “The bad news about GMOs.” While the opinion of Mr. Degler regarding genetically modified organism is his to hold, the article is littered with scientific inaccuracies.

Mr. Degler uses the study by British scientist Arpad Pusztai, which has been discredited and is outdated. According to academicsreview.org, The diets fed to rats was lacking in protein, filled with variables as different types of potatoes

A beagle named Miss P is now America’s top dog. For the second time, a beagle has won the Westminster Dog Show. Tails and humor tongues are wagging. For me, this news is incredibly wonderful.

Here’s why: Twenty-five years ago this month, before heading out to do my morning TV show, I found a stray beagle on my front doorstep. Barney was sweet and loving but destructive and disobedient. “You can keep him,” said my wife, “but take him to work with you.”

So, I did … for the next 12 years, and almost 2,500 TV shows. When he died in 2004, I received 3,000 letters and emails. The front page of the Indianapolis Star headlined it this way: “WISHTV’s Little Bandit Dies at 14.”

A few years later, I was asked to write a book about Barney’s exploits, but I was reluctant. It would be a lot of work—and a tough task for me emotionally, so I wavered until the very last minute. Here’s what changed my mind. Uno, an adorable little beagle, won Best in Show at Westminster. He also could have won noisiest in show—not to mention the nosiest. Finally, beagle owners had something to howl about. Yes, this was the first time a beagle had won the coveted award. The story goes that a beagle was a con-

tender back in 2003, but he went outside for a bathroom break and didn’t come back for three months.

Whoever was in charge of the cosmic sign department sent me a clear message when Uno was crowned. I knew people would be adopting beagles, so I had to write my book quickly—before they all ran away.

And so, seven years after Uno’s win and 25 years after I found Barney on my doorstep, another beagle has claimed top prize. These past 10 years I was blessed with another beagle—now gone—who was just as troublesome as Barney.

“What a good dog,” people always told me about Toby. “No,” I said, “a GREAT dog. Not a good dog.”

When Uno won in 2008, Gary Varvel of the Indianapolis Star drew a beagle wearing sunglasses standing on his hind legs alongside a newspaper declaring him the champ. A copy of that drawing hangs above my desk, signed by Gary.

I don’t think a beagle will win again for a long time. Three top dogs from the same family seems unlikely. However, Barbara Bush might not agree with that.

Transformers roll out at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum step into a battle as Bumblebee, fighting in a battle based on the Cartoon Network “Robots in Disguise” series. Also featured at the exhibit will be the voice of Peter Cullen, who’s played Optimus Prime for 30 years.

Access is free with admission to the museum, and the exhibit runs until July 6.

This isn’t the first time Transformers have come to town. In March 2011, the Children’s Museum unveiled Bumblebee as a permanent icon in the welcome center. The 17-foot, 1-ton Transformer is a prop from the 2007 live-action film. Then in summer 2012, the museum premiered a special “Seeing is Bee-lieving” program, with Bumblebee transforming from robot to Chevy Camaro (and back).

They’re part of the “Transformers: Robots in Disguise” exFor the kids hibit, which coincides with the launch of the Cartoon Network series on March 14. Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, and Grimlock will be featured, as well as multiple levels of toys and puzzles to play with. In addition, guests can learn about the process of toy creation, transform themselves into Bumblebee, and even design their own Transformer.

A team from the Children’s Museum visited Hasbro to see how their design team has worked to create more than 6,000 unique Transformers over the years.

Learning about that process helped to inspire the exhibit.

“It’s not something anybody has done before… it’s ours,” said Charity Counts, associate vice president of exhibits. “It’s a once-ina-lifetime thing here in Indianapolis.”

At the exhibit, guests can walk through every step of the creation process; they can create their own Transformer design, test its 3D capabilities, and watch as a 3D printer at the museum creates parts all day long. Kinect technology allows guests to

Girls can participate in hands-on experiments and interactive exhibits throughout the day and explore biology, chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, computer science and other disciplines. More than 1,200 girls are expected to attend the event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m on March 7.

Ingredients: 1 head leaf lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces. 3 pears - peeled, cored and chopped. 5 ounces Roquefort cheese, crumbled. 1 avocado - peeled, pitted, and diced. 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions.

1/4 cup white sugar. 1/2 cup pecans. 1/3 cup olive oil.

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar. 1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar. 1 1/2 teaspoons prepared mustard. 1 clove garlic, chopped. 1/2 teaspoon salt. Fresh ground black pepper to taste.

Directions: In a skillet over medium heat, stir 1/4 cup of sugar together with the pecans. Continue stirring gently until sugar has melted and caramelized the pecans.

Carefully transfer nuts onto waxed paper. Allow to cool, and break into pieces. For the dressing, blend oil, vinegar, 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar, mustard, chopped garlic, salt, and pepper. In a large serving bowl, layer lettuce, pears, blue cheese, avocado, and green onions. Pour dressing over salad, sprinkle with pecans, and serve. Recipe makes 6 servings.

Behind Bars: Colonial Hot Buttered Rum Ingredients: 2 cups brown sugar. 1/2 cup butter. 1 pinch salt. 2 quarts hot water. 3 cinnamon sticks. 6 whole cloves. 2 cups rum.

1 cup sweetened whipped cream. Ground nutmeg to taste.

Directions: Combine the brown sugar, butter, salt and hot water in 5 quart slow cooker. Add cinnamon sticks and cloves. Cover and cook on Low for 5 hours.

Stir in rum. Ladle from the slow cooker into mugs, and top with whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.

Rice dish perfect for company, kids Commentary by Ceci Martinez If you’re wondering what to cook today, “Arroz Tapado” or “rice molded” is a perfect dish for any occasion. This popular Peruvian recipe not only has a beautiful presentation but is also easy, inexpensive, fun and great for company or kids. You can have this fabulous meal ready in less than half an hour.

Note: I use a rice cooker. I like to cook the rice with 1/4 cup peas and 1/4 cup carrots cut in small cubes, but if you wish, leave the vegetables out of the rice.

ARROZ TAPADO Serves about 4 to 6 Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups cooked rice, 1 pound lean ground beef, 1 medium onion, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, chopped, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce, 1 tablespoon capers, drained and chopped, 2 tablespoons raisins, 10 black olives, pits removed and cut in stripes, 2 hard boiled eggs, chopped (optional), handful parsley, finely chopped, salt and pepper to taste Directions: Heat the oil in a skillet and brown the meat.

Remove meat and in the

same skillet and oil brown the onions and garlic.

Return the meat to the pan and add the cumin, paprika, tomato sauce, capers, raisins, olives, parsley, salt and pepper. Lower the heat to allow the meat to finish cooking. Add chopped egg to the mixture. If the mixture looks dry, add some chicken broth or water to make it juicy. To serve, on a ramekin or small bowl place the cooked rice, pressing with a spoon. Over this put a layer of the meat mixture, and cover with more rice.

Put a plate over the ramekin and turn upside-down. Take out the ramekin and serve.

Garnish the arroz tapado with parsley leaves.

From the moment they are born, we can’t help but wonder about the people our children will become. We hope they are exercise grounded in their sense of self, are healthy inside and out, and meet the challenges in their lives with strength and grace. Helping kids lose weight

Nearly one-third of all children are overweight or obese. The good news is this numbody ber has been decreasing in recent years. Here are ways to help your family stay on track with weight management: Focus on getting healthy, not losing weight. Worrying too much about the scale can be frustrating and may make people want to quit. Comment to your kids how much better you feel when you make a healthy choice. For example, “I have much more energy after taking a walk.”

Involve the whole family. Singling out a child who needs to lose weight is ineffective and may cause the child to feel “picked on.” Even if other family members are at healthy weights, all can benefit from improved nutrition and exercise.

Make it about everyone getting healthy, or it likely won’t happen at all.

Do something active every day. The goal is at least one hour daily. It doesn’t have to be all at once, and exercise doesn’t have to mean treadmills or weight rooms. Go ice skating.

Take a family walk or bike ride. Even when the weather is nasty, there are indoor options. Crank

up some music and have a dance party. If your children are watching TV, try the “commercial game.” Write down exercises (20 jumping jacks, 10 push-ups) on slips of paper and have each child select one during commercial breaks. This way, even “downtime” turns into a fun way to get moving.

Eat meals together. A recent study showed that eating one to two meals a week together as a family may cut obesity risk in half. Family meals usually contain more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and calcium than those eaten “on the run” or individually. Kids are busier than ever now, but make eating together a priority; even once a week makes a difference.

Avoid the middle of the grocery store. The perimeter of the store contains more fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, while the middle contains most of the calorie-dense snacks with little nutritional value. Staying away from the middle aisles can curb temptation before it starts.

Home sales up 1.5 percent for metro Indy area Commentary by Jim Litten

More than 1,700 homes pended in January, with all but three Central Indiana counties reporting increased sales compared to the same time period last year, according to statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company. Overall, January 2015 pended home sales rose 4.7 percent over January 2014 to 1,702, an increase of real estate 76 homes sold in the nine counties that F.C. Tucker tracks.

Overall, sales prices for the nine-county Central Indiana area increased by 1.5 percent. In Boone County, home sales last month were up 3.5 percent to $283,311 compared to January 2014.

• In Zionsville, home sales prices spiked 17 percent to $455,899 from $389,587 compared to January of last year.

• Inventory is moving at a gradual pace in Zionsville. Last month, homes sold in 94 days on average – 12 days slower than January 2014.

• More homes have been placed on the market. In Zionsville, 170 homes were available for sale last month, an increase of 11 homes compared to January 2014.

• Pended sales in Zionsville are stable. In January 2015, 33 homes sold, a decrease of two homes compared to January 2014.

Home sales are on par with what we’ve experienced typically in January. Whether home sales surge during the rest of the year will depend on a number of factors, including consumer confidence and economic stability, but we continue to be optimistic.

Make-A-Wish now at Pearson Ford

March is here, and for one local car dealership, that means it’s Make-A-Wish Month.

Pearson Ford in Zionsville is promoting its work with the Make-A-Wish foundation. For philanthropy every car sold in March, it will donate $75 to the charity. Each time a car gets sold, a car displayed in the showroom will get a blue star placed on it.

The dealership has worked with Make-A-Wish for the past five years.

Last year, Pearson Ford raised more than $13,000 in a month and a half. This Weir year, the goal is $12,000 in one month.

Make-A-Wish is a group that is near-and-dear to nineyear general manager Ben Weir.

“It’s a really, really well-run organization that obviously helps children, so to see those kids get to fulfill a dream and then get the letters that they write back to you about going on a Disney cruise and they’ve never seen the ocean before, things like that, it’s pretty special,” Weir said.

Customers may donate to the cause as well, either by making a donation at the dealership or tacking it onto the sale price of the car they buy. In a special case last year, one of the dealership’s business partners, Ally Financial, donated $1,000 to Make-A-Wish.

Because of its philanthropic efforts, the dealership became the first Indianapolis-area Ford dealership to be nominated for Ford’s Salute to Dealer Award, according to Weir. It honors dealership philanthropic efforts, something Weir says he and his team enjoy doing.

“It’s something that’s been our mission statement, I guess. When we feel like it’s the right organization, we’re going to do as much as we can for them,” Weir said.

Answer: That’s an unusual one, I have to say.

“For” can be used sometimes as a substitute for “as,” or “since” or “because.” The first example that comes to mind is Walt Whitman, who, in his poem “Pioneers! O Pioneers!” did just that: “For we cannot tarry here / We must march my darlings, we must bear the brunt of danger / We the youthful sinewy races, all the rest on us depend / Pioneers! O pioneers!”

All that being said, “for” and “so” are not interchangeable – at the very least not in the usage you mentioned.

so I find your columns helpful, interesting, and informative. I would like to get your feedback on a modern trend in writing – one which I despise, but seems to be accepted practice now.

The Boat Museum on Cairo’s Giza Plateau was built to display a single item -- a 4,500-year-old wooden boat. Exactly why the boat travel was built remains a mystery.

In 1954, archaeologists discovered 1,224 neatly arranged pieces of cedar wood in a pit carved in the bedrock just south of the Great Pyramid of Khufu (also called Cheops), the pharaoh who ruled Egypt from about 2589 to 2566 B.C. After studying ancient shipbuilding techniques, workers eventually reassembled the pieces into a boat 142 feet long and 20 feet wide. The cedar planks are held together with vegetable rope, which was also buried in the pit.

When placed in water, the wood swells and the rope shrinks, making the hull water-tight without the need for additional sealing. With no place for a sail, the flat-bottomed boat came equipped with six pairs of oars, the pair at the rear used for steering.

The shape of the boat, with an elongated prow and stern suggesting lotus stalks, resembles so-called “solar boats” shown on ancient Egyptian drawings transporting the sun god on his daily journey across the sky. Since deceased

pharaohs were believed to accompany the sun god on his travels, some Egyptologists have speculated that the boat was buried, like the pharaoh’s other earthly possessions, for the pharaoh to use in the afterlife. But a disassembled boat seems an odd choice for a deified pharaoh to use while traversing the heavens and the boat shows evidence of having been in earthly water before being disassembled and placed in its pit.

So the boat may have been used to transport the body of Khufu down the Nile from his capital in Memphis to his tomb in the Great Pyramid before it was disassembled and buried to prevent its reuse by mere mortals. Or perhaps the boat was used by Khufu for trips along the Nile to greet his subjects.

Whatever its original purpose, the world’s oldest intact boat is as seaworthy as the day it was built. Khufu’s reassembled boat is now displayed near his pyramid in a building also displaying pictures of its discovery and reconstruction.

Space planning improves master bath functionality

EXISTING BATHROOM: Located in Noblesville, this 11-year-old master bathroom was suffering from water pressure blueprint for issues and lack of funcimprovement tionality. “The original steam component of the shower quit working, the vessel sinks were not practical and the original angles of the walls created wasted space. We wanted to reconfigure the bathroom to allow for a bigger walk-in shower and a larger tub.”

EXPANDED SHOWER & TUB: Once the demolition of the existing bathroom was complete, the wall framing was modified to allow for the new shower half wall, bench and niches. New water lines and shower valves were installed for the Delta “Dryden” showerheads and body sprays.

The existing tub drain and water supply lines were also relocated for the new Jacuzzi corner tub.

VANITY & CHARGING STATION DETAILS: The main single sink vanity was replaced with a reverse double vanity in a Sable with black glaze finish. To maximize storage space, the vanity features two lower drawers instead of false upper drawers. A linen cabinet was added to the back wall for extra storage that doubles as a charging station with built-in USB ports.

MATERIAL SELECTIONS: “We wanted more natural light in the bathroom and wanted the

materials to reflect rich and warm colors.” Cambria quartz in a “Sussex” color was chosen for the vanity countertop and shower parts including the bench, wall, threshold and niche caps.

To contrast with the quartz material, “contempo tan” tile was selected for the shower wall while the “Gobi Corinth” accent tile and “Canyon Olive” heated floor tile add warmth. Oil rubbed bronze finishes coordinate with the warm tones of the cabinetry and floor tile. A glass panel on the knee wall allows natural light to stream into the bathroom.

Location: Noblesville, IN Type: Full Time Organization: Prevail, Inc. Description: Prevail, Inc., a victim awareness and support program providing services to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties, is seeking a full-time victim notification program advocate. Responsibilities include prevention and intervention services for all victims of crime and educating victims about the criminal justice system and their personal case information, Duties: • Work in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

• Provide information and referrals to participating victims as well as verifying/obtaining updated victim contact information for the Victim Notification database.

• Provide continued assistance to victims by providing crime victim court advocacy services, assistance with filing Violent Crime Compensation forms, Victim Impact Statements, making appropriate referrals to community resources and updating victims on court related activities and case dispositions.

• Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

• Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy centers as scheduled and approved by the Adult Services Coordinator.

• Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community, as needed.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field is required. Minimum of 2 years experience working in a victim assistance or related field, preferred.
