Mayor: Great questions at meetings

Hundreds of people signed an online petition launched in late January urging Zionsville officials to hold off on financing plans town hall for a new town hall. A handful of them attended two open houses Feb. 17 and 23 designed to give residents a chance to meet with elected officials, architects and others involved with the project.

About 12 to 15 people attended each session, said Mayor Tim Haak, who answered questions and addressed concerns about the project. Although the turnout wasn’t as high as he had hoped to see, he said those who came represented a wide range of opinions on the issue and left Haak better informed.

“They asked great questions and were very respectful and open-minded,” Haak said. “I think people came away learning a lot more about the project.”

Zionsville resident Brett Holloway said Haak addressed her concerns about traffic and development, but she is worried that time has run out to make any substantial changes to the project.

“They’re getting a lot of feedback, but it’s almost too little too late,” she said.

Haak said input from the open houses and other public meetings has led to some potential changes, such as an altered roofline and mechanical updates, but that “the overall scope has not changed a whole lot.”

the project. He believes that the town should first address safety and infrastructure.

“They do need something (to update town hall), but let’s just make sure they’re financially ready for it,” Robbins said. “It’s the surprise down the road that doesn’t go well.”

The proposed financing plan calls for borrowing $10.2 million to build a 41,300-square-foot town hall behind the current one. Zionsville would make biannual payments on the project over 25 years through a lending process that is similar to a mortgage. The proposed plan has an interest rate of 2.75 percent that could be recalculated in 10 years.

The town council addressed the issue at its February meeting but did not take any action. The council is expected to discuss the financing plan again at its March 7 meeting and could potentially vote on it.

Although additional open houses are not scheduled, Haak said anyone with questions or concerns is welcome to contact him or other town officials to discuss the project.

“If people want to meet and talk, we’re happy to arrange that for them,” he said.

Dispatches Speech contest – Each year, the Zionsville Optimist Club sponsors an oratorical contest in coordination with the worldwide organization Optimist International. This year’s topic is How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others and is open to students younger than 18. Applications are due by March 11. Child advocacy symposium – Every Child is a one-day symposium that will address the growing need for foster families as a result of increased heroin use. Commission approves rezoning for proposed tennis club

Representatives of the Boone County Tennis Center petitioned for a development rezone of approximately four acres of land at 4560 S 875 E at the Feb. 6 plan commission meeting.

The rezone was approved by the commission, which would allow a change from rural low density single and two family residential zoning district to a special use zoning district.

The club is hoping to build an eight-court facility with potential operating hours of 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The club has been gathering members, pledges and has attained Pearson Automotive as a potential corporate sponsor. The petition

will go on to the next town council meeting in March.

In other plan commission news, Fabrico Inc. asked the commission to waive its rules in order to re-file its proposed 28,500-square-foot mixed-

use development at 165 and 235 W. Sycamore Street. The refiling would allow more time for discussion of the development with neighbors of the location.

“This is the first scheduled public hearing for this matter, however the 60-day period may have passed since (the proposal) was originally filed,” Tim Ochs of Ice Miller Legal Counsel said.

“There have been three continuance requests by neighbors to allow more time to meet and discuss, which we are more than happy to do. The thought though is that we can fix this technical glitch by withdrawing and re-filing.”

The commission approved to waive the rules and allow a re-filing of the project. Conditions of the project would remain the same, but the refile would require a notice to be sent out for the new March hearing.

Authors to speak on parenting

By Joseph Knoop • news@currentzionsville.com Sissy Goff and David Thomas get it. Being a parent is hard. Being a parent that can balance both the faith physical and emotional needs of a child with the numerous obligations in a day is nearly impossible.

The parenting authors aim to alleviate much of that Goff struggle in two new classes titled “Raising Boys and Girls” and “Intentional Parenting,” presented in March at Zionsville Presbyterian Church.

“A lot of what they’re teaching is based on how God wants us to raise our children, and I think we are a society that’s inundated with information,” said Amy Crispin, ZPC children’s ministry coordinator. “One book can tell you to never say no, another will tell you that you need to be firm, but really, to a Christ-believer, there is only one rule, and that’s God’s.”

The “Raising Boys and Girls” class focuses on helping parents understand the role they play in the development of children of either gender. Goff will cover the different stages of development for young girls and how to

improve your ability to relate to them, while Thomas plans to explore the role parents play in a young boy’s journey to manhood.

In “Intentional Parenting,” Goff and Thomas pull from their personal experience in talking with various parents in order to show participants how to better connect with their children, while avoiding trivial distractions like technology. A portion of the Thomas discussion is also focused on balancing between a parent’s various obligations and the attention they must show their children in order for them to develop in a healthy manner.

Friends remember Katie, Raymond Giehll

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Katie Giehll was a woman who loved animals, NASCAR and most of all, her family.

A 2003 North Central IN MEMORIAM High School graduate, she drove to campus most every day with her close friend, Crystal Ramsey.

“On our way to school, we used to pop in an Eazy-E tape and rap along with them and have people give us funny looks down the street,” Ramsey, now a Brownsburg resident, said. “We loved that.”

Reminiscing about her best friend in high school brings a smile to Ramsey’s face, but the last several days have mostly been filled with horror and heartbreak for those who knew Katie. She and her son, Raymond Giehll IV, 4, were murdered in their Zionsville home Feb. 17, Katie’s 31st birthday.

Ramsey described Raymond, a preschooler at Traders Point Christian Academy, as “smart and adorable.”

“That little boy would instantly light up a room with his blonde hair and big brown eyes,” she said.

wedding. She said one of her favorite memories of her friend was watching her marry her “dream cowboy.”

“When she met her husband, Raymond, something changed in her for the better,” she said. “He made her so happy. She seemed complete and happy, and then they had Raymond IV and she was even more fulfilled.”

Katie loved animals and had an interest in becoming a veterinarian. She worked for

Briarwood Animal Clinic in 2007 and 2008 and became a pet sitter for several of its clients.

“She had a good work ethic, and my clients trusted her enough that several of them hired her to come and stay at their house and watch their pets,” said Dr. Kim Skibbe, a veterinarian at the clinic.

In addition to animals, Katie loved spending time outdoors and going to the Brickyard 400 with family and friends.

“I never attended, but I know she talked about it for months on end,” Ramsey said. “(She was a) Tony Stewart fan. Big time.”

Ramsey said she hadn’t spoken to Katie in recent months, but she was planning to give her a call on her birthday when she heard the tragic news. She is heartbroken that she won’t have another chance to speak to Katie, but she will always remember how her friend supported her through difficult times.

“My son was diagnosed with autism. It shattered my world, but she helped me through it,” Ramsey said. “She was (my son’s) godmother.”

As the community mourns a tragic loss, she hopes that Katie’s selfless spirit will always be remembered.

“She always cared about others over herself,” she said.

Fiddler to perform at library

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, Indiana resident Deb Shebish will play solo fiddle and talk about Irish music and fiddle playing at 7 p.m. March 15 at the Hussey Mayevent field Memorial Public Library.

“Even if they’re just interested in travel,” Shebish said, “there’s often a lot of crossover that people wouldn’t expect. Here in America, there’s a culture of Irish sessioning where people get together and maybe don’t even know each other, but because of the common bodies of tunes and the traditions that are associated with them, they’re able to sit down and play together.”

Shebish will incorporate multimedia into her presentation to show videos of these sessions and how music has migrated along with resurgence and interest.

She maintains a travel blog that she plans to update after a trip to Hungary in March.

“I’m really in love with travel that’s associated with music,” said Shebish, “And not necessarily large elaborate performances, but more intimate, funky things or dance events.

Her interest in Irish and folk music emerged during her junior year at Indiana State University. She learned a lot of Irish music while vis-

iting Bloomington and met a ballad’s scholar who asked Shebish to join her doing research in Scotland.

“I learned so much,” she said, adding that the trip introduced her to many professors at the University of Edinburgh, where she eventually obtained her masters degree.

She performs in Indianapolis at various pubs and restaurants.

“I think a lot of folks would be surprised the number of people playing this music here in Indianapolis,” Shebish said.

Aquaponics farm planned at ZUMC

Abigail Danner grows fruits and vegetables in her backyard using a fish tank, and this spring, she’s building a farm with six fish tanks at Zionsville United giving back Methodist Church to help provide low-income families with a healthier option.

Currently, Zionsville Presbyterian Church has a food pantry that offers several healthy food choices, but Danner wants to supplement those with locally grown, organic vegetables like peas, spinach and lettuce.

“People say, ‘Well, why don’t (low-income families) just buy healthy food?’” Danner said.

“It’s because it’s expensive.”

Danner and her brother, Greg Tucker, believe the solution is an aquaponics farm, which essentially grows fish to create fertilizer, which then grows plants that purify the water for the fish. Danner expects the Aquaponics farms to be an efficient solution for growing more affordable, local food.

An aquaponics farm uses a fish tank connected to a grow bed, where the plants are.

These farms are self-sustaining because the fish are continuously reproducing and fertilizing the plant seeds.

“It’s kind of revolutionary and not at the same time,” Danner said.

Having started out in Australia, aquaponics farms have since become popular in India and countries in Africa where climates are very arid.

They have also popped up in other urban areas of Indiana such as East Chicago and Bloomington. Danner said her goal is to bring aquaponics to rural settings in Indiana, making Boone Co. an ideal jumping off point.

Danner said she wants to use garden plots behind ZUMC to build her fish tanks and that she plans to stagger the planting periods to have vegetables growing all the time.

After four months of fundraising, Danner will be ready to start building the farm in the spring. She said she is looking for scouts and students that are in need of community service time to help make this farm a reality.

County inmates foster cats

Michelle Atkinson is always looking for new foster homes for the many animals that are brought to the Humane Society for Boone Co. Recently, she found a good one in Pets an unexpected place.

Four cats in need of a home are now living at the Boone Co. Jail, being cared for by three inmates through the new Cuffs and Collars program.

Since launching the program in January, Atkinson, a Zionsville resident who serves as the director of foster/adoptions for HSBC, said she has already seen a change in the cats and the inmates. The cats are receiving more socialization, she said, and the inmates are learning skills and truly making a difference.

“It would be my hope that this would stick with them when they’re in a dark place. They can remember this positive aspect of their life and cling to that” said Atkinson, adding that she hopes it will encourage them to make positive choices in the future and avoid landing back in jail.

of the cats are adopted out, Atkinson said others will replace them in the program. Eventually, Atkinson would like to add additional cats and begin fostering dogs at the jail, too.

“It’s kind of a companionship between us and the animals,” said Aaron McNutt, one of the first inmates selected for the program.

“It’s not only beneficial for the animal, but it’s also beneficial for us. We’re not always in contact with family. Sometimes we’d just like to have something else to occupy our time, and do the right thing, too.”

Geese can learn a lot from otters Commentary by Ward Degler The V of geese came in low over the pond, banked into the wind and settled for a landing. What they didn’t know was, the pond had frozen overnight and was plain talk solid ice.

I have to admit, it looked like water: clear, glassy, smooth. The geese arched their wings and extended their feet for a typical Canada goose water ski landing.

That’s when everything fell apart. Instead of sinking gracefully into the water, the lead goose touched down and immediately went into a spiral skid. The others, close behind splattered onto the ice one after another in a feathery mess.

Pilots are taught that when coming in for a landing, it becomes apparent the plane and the runway aren’t lined up exactly right, to ram the throttle forward, declare a missed approach and go around for another try.

To their credit, the last couple of geese in the flight tried to do exactly that. When they realized something was amiss, they poured on the coals, flapped their wings frantically in a valiant attempt to get back in the air and reconsider their options.

Geese, however, are masters of flying in

close formation. By the time goose number five realized that goose number four was in trouble he was already in full-fledged collision mode.

There was a lot of honking going on, too, with everyone blaming everyone else. The poor birds were plainly humiliated.

One winter, while sitting in a snow bank on the north shore of Lake Superior, I watched a family of otters come down from the woods to fish at the shoreline. They didn’t know the water was frozen either and found themselves skidding in helpless circles on the ice.

But while geese tend to take things way too seriously, otters look at everything as a game. In mere minutes the otters were soon riding giant slabs of windblown ice across the lake, thoroughly enjoying themselves.

After I stopped laughing, I felt sorry for the embarrassed geese. Frankly, I think the otters have the right idea. They know how to turn misfortune into fun.

A goose could learn a lot from an otter.

Learn about Arc Artisans at Creativity Uncorked

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com It’s an opportunity to create art, learn about The Arc Artisans and raise money for the program’s art supplies. The Creativity Uncorked celebration is being held fundraiser at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center March 10, during Disability Awareness Month.

This is the second year for the event, created as an opportunity to build awareness in the southeastern corner of the county, while simultaneously raising funds for the Arc Artisans program, which teaches adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to create pieces of art with help from a professional teacher.

Attendees will be able to choose from a variety of art projects to create, such as mixed media or painting.

In a separate area will be an awareness room so visitors can learn more about The Arc of Greater Boone Co. Items created by the Arc Artisans will be for sale, including selections of paintings, painted scarves, pillows, clay platters and bowls. Approximately 30 artists participate in the program, and most create each piece of art as a team.

Appetizers and wine will be served along

with music, a wine pull and silent auction.

A limited number of $25 tickets are being sold along with table, event and wine sponsors.

“We’d like this to be a fundraiser, but we wanted to make it accessible enough because it really, primarily, is an awareness event,” said Marcia Clutter, who handles community relations for The Arc. Last year, nearly 100 people attended the event and created pieces of art together.

“It was a huge success,” Clutter said.

“People were responding to that better than we ever could have dreamed.”

ZCHS grad Ashley Rohrman reflects on service in world’s largest floating hospital

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Since Lt. Ashley Rohrman got her Navy commission after graduating from Purdue’s nursing school in 2008, her goal was to set sail on a medical humanitarian cover story journey.

She got her wish for six months in 2015 as the 2004 Zionsville Community High School graduate was part of the Continuing Promise program aboard the United States Naval Ship Comfort, the world’s largest hospital ship.

The deployment lasted from April to September, and she visited 11 countries. Rohrman said the purpose of Continuing Promise is to provide medical aid to the people of Central and South America and the Caribbean.

“It was more than I hoped it would be,” said Rohrman, a pediatric nurse stationed in Virginia Beach. “It was tough being away from home for six months, but it was an incredible experience. It really opened my eyes to the advantages we have.”

The ship served as a floating hospital with four intensive care units, 12 operating rooms and four in-patient units.

“There were a lot of different facets that went into the mission,” Rohrman said. “My part of it was providing medical aid and care for each of the countries that we went to. We had veterinarians, physicians and surgeons. We also had non-governmental agents that were on board with us, too.”

Rohrman, 30, said about 10 days were spent in each country, where they would set up two clinics.

“In each of those clinics we would see about 1,000 people a day,” Rohrman said. “Some drove from other countries to get to these clinics. We were there from sun up to sun down.

We gave vaccines, medications, and we performed minor procedures.”

Rohrman said there were screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure and they performed X-rays.

“We would do all kinds of surgeries they wouldn’t be able to afford or have access to in their country,” Rohrman said.

Haiti was the last stop of the mission.

“Haiti was my favorite, but it also broke my heart,” she said.

“It was devastating to see the way people lived, and that’s their normal.

“I felt like we did good and really helped people,” she added.

“I wish we would could have stayed longer. I would love to go back with a mission trip.”

Honduras and Guatemala were the other countries in the most need, she said.

There were several chaplains on the trip. Rohrman said they went to orphanages and played sports with the children.

too,” she said.

Her favorite experience was when they were in Honduras, visiting a rural school.

“We were going there to bring the children new shoes,” Rohrman said. “We had been given shoes by Samaritan’s Feet.”

Before giving the children new shoes, Rohrman said they washed the children’s feet as an act of love and service.

“That was one of the coolest experiences and one of the most rewarding,” she said.

That was one of many stops that Rohrman said they delivered shoes.

Rohrman had been awarded a Navy Nurse Corps scholarship her senior year at ZCHS. She was stationed first in San Diego and then spent two years in Naples, Italy, before heading to Virginia.

“I’ve been blessed with having a career that is very wellrounded,” said Rohrman, who said she isn’t certain how much longer she will stay in the Navy. “I’ve done more in eight years than I ever thought I’d do.”

a calling Rohrman saw the importance of being a nurse when her mother, Jo, battled colon cancer. She died in 1997 when Rohrman was 11 years old.

“I saw the importance of just being there when they’re sick,” Rohrman said. “I remember how friendly the nurses were to my mom. That brightened her day when she wasn’t feeling well.

I wanted to give that back. My specialty is working with little kids with cancer. If I had to guess why I was drawn to that, I would expect it was the experiences I went through with my mom when she was sick.”

Rohrman’s father, Ed, and step-mother, Peggy, still live in Zionsville. Both Ed and Peggy are survivors of colon cancer.

“So that is a godsend,” said Rohrman, who has two step-sisters.

Her grandfather, Ed, served in the Navy during World War II. He and his wife, Rose, have been married 70 years.

“I’m so happy she went in the Navy,” said her grandfather. “I can’t say enough nice things about the Navy.”

Apparently, it’s Trump’s to lose That sound you’re hearing is the Republican Establishment Machine frantically busying itself with wailing and gnashing of molars while trying to pool enough fiscal resources to get Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) or Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) into a position to derail Donald Trump (R-Billions). This run-up to the party’s nomination will be nothing short of pure entertainment. Trump, indeed, is to be taken extremely seriously in his candidacy. What we first mistakenly categorized as buffoonery months ago is proving to be quite the opposite. This is nowhere near an endorsement – we got out of that business long ago – but the fact that Cruz and Rubio are trailing significantly in polling is something that has the Makers of the Spineless (see George Bush the First) on edge. Stops? Expect them all to be pulled out by the Republican National Committee. This probably will be darned good theatre, much more entertaining than the last go-round between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama - and that was a heck of a show! Still, if Trump garners victories in the majority of Super Tuesday races (that would be today, by the way), this thing could be over.

Concurrently, we’re also looking forward to Clinton (N.Y) and Bernie Sanders (Vt.) continuing to duke it out to see who can run the farthest on the yellow brick road to socialism; that would be the race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. As much as we wanted to see Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) and Clinton battle it out in November – for entertainment purposes, if nothing else - we’re thinking Trump v. Clinton might have even more impact on national discourse.

Donner, party of 87 Commentary by Terry Anker Of all guests list we might like to make, the Donner Party is not one. Notorious for its admitted cannibalism, the group of would-be 1846 pioneers were led across the American west toward promised abundance in California by George and Tamsen Donner, an aging Missouri farm couple. As is often the case with our best-laid-plans, nasty weather, poor choices, and ill fortune conspired trapping the travelers in the Sierra Nevada mountains at the height of the winter storm season. Beleaguered and desperate, some turned to an apparent, if macabre, source of much needed calories – the dead or dying amongst themselves.

Retold in American high school history classes, the story is used to illustrate the spirit that drove folks, under risk of considerable peril, to move west and populate the largely then open land. But, Donner also is a cautionary tale of terrific hubris and misplaced trust.

Local Hoosier Karl Ahlrichs, a direct descendent of Donner, recently appeared in a

lengthy, nationally televised documentary retelling the account of the infamous wagon train. He talks insightfully of the qualities, good and bad, that inspire we humans to both to follow and, at times, to lead.

In the program one learns that fellow settler James Reed was the more qualified to head the expedition but lacked what today might be called “soft” skills. He was tough and single-minded while the notably more mature Donner was the more consensus driven and likable of the men. Reed was expelled along the route for killing another traveler in a fight. Against all odds, he vowed to return to his wife and young children. He did – all survived and went on to find success in California. Conversely, Donner, along with 40 others, succumbed on the trail. One wonders, when is grit required and when is it simply an abrasive?

It’s a good thing I’ve already won Mother of the Year (2002, NNMTC, thank you very much), because lately, I humor wouldn’t even earn a nomination. Read on for a tale of poor parenting at its finest.

Our youngest has been sick or injured for what seems like forever. So when she complained of ear pain last week, I wasn’t surprised, just annoyed, and found it hardpressed to give her any sympathy. After an hour visit to the Minute Clinic (what?), a double ear infection was confirmed. But since she wasn’t contagious or running a fever, I did what any sub-par parent would do: I drove her directly to a sleep-over.

(Curse those baby blues; they get me every time!) Not surprisingly, two evenings later, she was almost in tears from the pain and sporting a fever of 102. My husband and I then made another questionable decision when, the following day, we left her at home alone. In our defense, she is almost 12, and we did put grand-parental reinforcements on call. Stop judging!

Of course, by the time I returned from work, her fever had skyrocketed to 104.6.

Sweet Jesus! Naturally, she freaked out, and I calmly lied to her precious flushed face: “It’s normal. You’re fine.” Then I rushed upstairs and left a somewhatpanicked voicemail for the pediatrician. One hundred and four is high!

But here’s the best part: after I hung up, I jumped right into my car and drove to the gym. I abandoned my very sick child so I could work out. I know! Looking back, I can only attribute my monumentally bad judgement to the fact that she is child number four. I’ve pretty much seen it all.

And to my credit, when the nurse called back and said to take her to the ER if the fever wasn’t down, I did try and reach my daughter by phone. I didn’t stop the elliptical, mind you, but I did make an effort to check on her.

In the end, she was okay. No harm, no foul. But still probably not Mother of the Year, right?

There’s not much humor related to the topic of cruciferous vegetables. If you google Brussels sprouts or kale or turhumor nips for any clever witticisms, you’re going to come up empty and disappointed – sort of the way you feel after eating that stuff.

There have been a few exceptions. Mark Twain claimed cauliflower was just a head of cabbage with a college education. Stephen Colbert recently asserted that cauliflower was just broccoli trying to win an Academy Award, a reference to the alleged color bias in the nominating process.

I’d like to see more cruciferous humor, so I was thrilled to read this headline in the Wall Street Journal: “DIETER’S AFFAIR WITH CAULIFLOWER COMES TO A HEAD” This, from the WSJ, not a publication known for its whimsy.

The article describes a customer at a Sam’s Club making a beeline to the produce area, hoping to find this healthy vegetable, which is in short supply now. Wouldn’t you make a beeline to shelves with honey? Writer Robin Sidel laments that because cauliflower is getting tougher to find, many consumers

are “fruitlessly” digging into supermarket bins looking for it. Fruitlessly? If anything, you would be “vegetatively” looking for the cauliflower.

The reporter says cauliflower’s popularity has “blossomed” as a substitute for starchy foods. I’m pretty certain there’s no blossoming in the life cycle of a cauliflower. Maybe I’m wrong. I’ll try a bouquet for Mary Ellen on Valentine’s Day. Sidel interviews this woman who has ended her love affair with cauliflower. In her cauliflower blog (yes, I’m serious) she has defiantly posted a recipe for broccoli salad. Says the blogger, “I have now taken my revenge like any former bitter lover.” There’s the problem: she’s bitter, but her former lover is bland and unexciting. Good luck with broccoli: not exactly the George Clooney of vegetables.

I know a humor column is an odd place to discuss the rising price of cauliflower. I’m just giving you a heads up.

Hopwood Cellars, Earth Explorer hold Wine and Coloring group

Coloring books are not just for kids any more.

Earth Explorer Toys will start a Wine and Coloring group at Hopwood Cellars Winery, 12 E. Cedar St., pastime Zionsville.

“The latest trend is many different adult coloring books,” said Sara Jenkins, social media consultant for Earth Explorer Toys. “It’s been shown that it can reduce stress. It’s kind of something that adults can work on to relax. It’s kind of something mindless you can do and unwind.”

There are sessions scheduled between 6 to 8 p.m. March 2 and 16.

“This is the first time we’ve tried anything like this so we’re anxious to see how it turns out,” Jenkins said. “The response has been positive so far. We thought it would be a great girls night out but it’s open to anyone to come.

Whoever is interested can come. We’re trying to spread the word. We’re reached out the moms of preschoolers groups.”

Jenkins said there are flyers at both Hopwood Cellars and Earth Explorers, 27 E. Pine St., Zionsville.

Wooten is known for solo performances and as a member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Wooten was voted Bassist of the Year three times by Bass Magazine. He’s the only person to win the award more than once.

“Where’s Amy?” … I attended the Actors Theatre of Indiana Mardi Gras Party presented by the ATI Guild and sponsored by Current. The festive annual fundraiser was held at the Woodland Country Club and was pure magic from the minute I walked in the front doors. The ATI Guild did a fantastic job from the bright colorful decorations to the mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres and complimentary hurricanes. Guests enjoy various games and chances to bid on spectacular silent auction items donated from local businesses and major corporations.

The silent auction items were amazing because there was something for everyone. I scored a super cool “Star Wars” basket but was out bid by another guest for a fun Colts package. One lucky guest won a beautiful pair of 14K white gold diamond studs from Midwest Jewelers and Estate Buyers while another guest walked out with a stunning John Hardy Classic Chain Bracelet from Moyer Fine Jewelers. • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed Directions: Peel different varieties of apples. Core, slice and squeeze a lemon on the apples. Buttered a baking pie plate and lay apples into the dish. In a medium bowl put the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, cardamom and butter - stir with a fork or mix with your fingers just until ingredients come together. Sprinkle evenly over the top of the fruit. Bake at 375F for 40 minutes or until top is crisp, golden and fragrant.

Serve with a pitcher of cream or good vanilla ice cream.

Jim Lauderdale has hosted the Americana Music Awards since 2002. It seems only fitting since he has long personified music the Americana label.

He’s fine with that, too.

“That term encompasses the different styles I do, bluegrass, country, rock and soul songs,” Lauderdale said.

Lauderdale, a two-time Grammy winner and prolific songwriter, will perform at The Warehouse, 254 1st Ave. SW, Carmel at 8 p.m. March 12.

Lauderdale will start the performance with his bluegrass band. He will perform several solo songs from his new album “Soul-Searching Vo1. 1 Memphis/Vol. 2 Nashville,” his 28th album.

“It’s half classic sounding soul music, which I did in Memphis, and the other disc is recorded in Nashville,” Lauderdale said of the album.

“That is eclectic singer-songwriter style. The show itself will be eclectic that night since I’ll be kicking things off with the Bluegrass Band.”

Pocket neighborhood planned

Inglenook of Zionsdevelopment ville will feature 48 cottage homes clustered in small groups around common green spaces.

The development will be on 17 acres of woodlands just south of 106th Street on Zionsville Road. The exact name of the neighborhood is to be determined.

Megan Leahy, Inglenook marketing director, said the concept of a pocket neighborhood is very new to the Midwest and Indiana.

“Casey Land, our builder, is the first to bring the concept of Ross Chapin’s pocket neighborhoods and front porch living to Indiana,” said Leahy, Land’s daughter.

In a typical Midwestern subdivision, Leahy said, big homes with garage doors face the main street. Homes in a pocket neighborhood face a common courtyard.

“You’re not greeted by giant garage door and huge house,” Leahy said. “You’re greeted by warm gardens, friendly pedestrian walkways, big green space in the middle.”

Land has built one other pocket neighborhood in Carmel off 99th Street and Maple Drive. There are 27 homes on five acres on that site.

“In Indiana, you are used to the oversized pretty much everything,” Leahy said. “This is

about an instant community you move into.”

Leahy said the front porch plays a large part in the community and homes.

The front porches act as an extension of the home – they’re even large enough for a picnic table and family dinner.

There will be one two-bedroom home, called a Betty design. There also will be three- and four-bedroom homes, a Plumrose design.

Leahy said they are working on the first phase of the neighborhood and have sold three of the 16 homes. Home construction will likely begin in early summer.

“Each home is situated on their personal lot,” Leahy said. “The exact size of the home sites will vary depending upon the footprint of the home on the given lot.”

Leahy said there are huge windows with lots of natural light.

Home sales up 2.1 percent Commentary by Jim Litten Home sellers have benefited from the continued rise in home sale prices as the number of available homes steadily real estate declines in the nine-county central Indiana region.

The average sale price rose 2.1 percent in January 2016 compared to January 2015, while the region also saw an 11.7 percent decline in available homes. Tighter inventory also affected the year’s slow start in pended home sales, which declined 9.5 percent compared to last year.

Boone County’s average sale price dropped approximately 15 percent compared to last year, now at $247,748. There were approximately 30 fewer houses on the market, which

represented an 8.1 percent decline from last year. Pended sales in the county also dipped 29.2 percent.

Low inventory is a trend nationwide, and it can affect the health of the real estate market. The National Association of Realtors’ recent quarterly HOME study found 83 percent of current renters hope to own a home in the future. That demand may spark current homeowners to list their homes and perhaps help spur more sales in 2016.

When illness strikes, one of the first questions we ask is “should I stay home?” The answer varies, defamily Medicine pending on symptoms and discomfort. Sometimes we’re able to push through the day with a cold or sore throat, and other times even minor illnesses make us too weak to get out of bed. When the decision isn’t clear, keep these factors in mind to determine if it’s in your—and your co-workers—best interest to stay home.

• Fever – A fever indicates you’re contagious. If you have one, it’s best to stay home. Chills and sweats are signs of fever, so take your temperature to be sure. If it’s over 102 degrees F, call your primary care doctor.

• Sniffles and cough – While it’s probably okay to go to work with these symptoms, wash hands frequently and cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or shirtsleeve to avoid spreading germs.

If a persistent cough is deep and you’re short of breath, call your doctor for evaluation. These could be signs of bronchitis

or pneumonia.

• Headache – If your headache includes sensitivity to noise or light, it may be a migraine. Consider staying home if you have migraine symptoms, and call your doctor if headaches become frequent.

• Pinkeye – Characterized by redness, white or yellow mucus in the corner of the eye, and matted eyelashes, pinkeye can easily be spread to others. This means calling in sick if you suspect you have it. Consult with your doctor to see if it should be treated with an antibiotic.

While minor illnesses are a nuisance, the good news is healthy people generally recover quickly. You’re the best judge of how you feel; trust your instinct and use common sense about when to stay home, and call your doctor if symptoms become more serious.

Before Background info: This home in the North Willow Farms neighborhood in Indianapolis was built in 1973. The family was very ready to update and expand their kitchen to match their own personal style!

Ancient city on the Euphrates Commentary by Don Knebel Mari, near the west bank of the Euphrates River in eastern Syria, was the world’s first planned city. Its ancient records provide unprecedented information about travel times and places of the Biblical Patriarchs.

Mari, founded in about 3000 B.C., was disposed within a circular embankment. It grew rich as the center of trade between Babylon and cities to the north and west, including Hazor, later rebuilt by King Solomon. By 1800 B.C., Mari controlled an area extending from the northern reaches of Babylonia to the southern border of what is now Turkey. The city itself, covering more than 150 acres, featured a spectacular palace, occupying more than 300,000 square feet and including about 275 rooms.

In 1760 B.C., Babylonian King Hammurabi conquered Mari, burned its palace and took control of the surrounding territory. Six years later, Hammurabi issued a famous code governing the administration of justice in the areas he controlled. The code, which Hammurabi attributed to Babylonian gods, sets out the retributive punishment of an “eye for an eye, a tooth

for a tooth” that is repeated in the Hebrew Scriptures and later rejected by Jesus.

The Mari ruins were buried under the desert sands and forgotten until 1933, when French archaeologists rediscovered the city and began excavations. They uncovered a royal archive of about 15,000 clay tablets with cuneiform writing in the demolished rooms of the palace.

Some of the tablets described places associated with Biblical Abraham. Others included prophecies made in the name of the gods, a practice once thought to have originated with the Hebrew prophets. All provided unprecedented information about life in the lands of the Bible during the early second millennium B.C. Mari has been the victim of looting and destruction during Syria’s civil war. Fortunately, what has been learned from its tablets cannot be destroyed.

Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Protective Order Advocate responsible for assessing and assisting clients with completing protective orders. Also responsible for completing intake paperwork, completing safety plans, referring clients to ongoing services within the agency and completing 24 hour crisis line shifts.

Duties: Assessing and assisting clients with completing protective orders.

Working in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Serving as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Completing 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy centers as scheduled and approved by the Adult Advocacy Supervisor.

Collaborating with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field is required. Minimum of 2 years experience working in a victim assistance or related field.
