Latest 200 West details shared with village residents

It’s been designed and then redesigned multiple times, but the latest plans for a proposed mixed-use development development called 200 West feature a three-story building likely to hold a restaurant, retailers and office space.

Attorney Tim Ochs, who represents developer Randy Green, presented the newest plans for 200 West at a Village Residents Association special meeting Feb. 22 at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center. The proposed 28,400-square-foot building sits on approximately four acres along Sycamore Street just south of Second Street.

“What we did was really tighten up the project and comply with all the requirements that are in the zoning ordinance, so now it’s down to a single building,” Ochs said, adding that additional buildings could be added in the future.

The project as originally presented in early 2016 would have included 15 singlefamily homes, 75 multi-family homes and commercial uses. After receiving negative feedback from the public, the developers modified the project, but the changes weren’t enough to keep the Zionsville Plan Commission and Zionsville Town Council from voting against a zoning change.

The current proposal will not require a zoning change or any variances from town codes. Ochs said 200 West will include 55 parking spaces — five more than required — in lots above and below ground. Several residents expressed concern that it would not be enough.

Ralph Stacy, who has lived on Second Street for approximately 70 years, said he already has to park a block or two away from his home at times when traffic is busy.

“I hope that when I enter my 80s and 90s I have a place to park in front of my home,” he said.

Ochs said developers believe that 55 spaces will be sufficient.

“It would be folly for any developer or any owner of a building to have it fail because there’s not adequate parking,” he said. “That’s not the desire here.”

He also said that it’s not yet known if the parking garage would be free for public use. If any public tax increment financing dollars are used to fund it, the garage would likely remain free, he said. The developer is interested in discussing the possibility of using TIF to fund infrastructure, but the decision would be up to the Zionsville Redevelopment Commission. The land already lies within a TIF area.

The building, designed by Zionsvillebased David Rausch Studio, will likely contain a restaurant and retail space on the first floor with office space on the second and third floors. Ochs said that it’s too early in the process to officially announce any tenants but that there has been “a lot of interest,” including discussions with at least one local restaurateur.

If the town approves the project, Ochs said construction could start as early as this summer and last approximately a year. The Zionsville Plan Commission is expected to discuss 200 West at its meeting at 7 p.m. March 20.

Mayor: Improvements on the way

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak focused on infrastructure and economic development projects during his State of the state of town Town address, presented at the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce’s Business Breakfast Series Feb. 21 event.

Haak said the long-awaited traffic signal at Oak Street and Kissel Road is under construction and should be complete within a few weeks. The design for the roundabout at the intersection of Mulberry Street and Ford Road is in the works and construction will begin this summer.

The town received a $1 million grant last year through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program and a special distribution of funds from the state to allow for a budget of $2.5 million for resurfacing roads this year.

“We have seen a tremendous increase in our ability to fund road projects,” Haak said. “Our fiscal budget is in a lot better shape.”

After road construction, the town’s second priority is Creekside Corporate Park. Its first tenant, DK Pierce, will move into an office in the back of the park. This spurred AT&T to lay fiber optic lines throughout the entire park.

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. is offering a new program to inspire residents to visit local parks and track outdoors their observations.

The iNaturalist program allows users to upload photos of plants or animals snapped during their outdoor adventures. “iNaturalist is a project based on what is called ‘citizen science.’ It’s kind of like Instagram, but more for the natural world,” Zionsville Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock said.

“When you’re out and about either in your back yard, traveling or at your favorite park, if you see something that is a plant or animal, it’s your opportunity to document what you see.”

Because the parks department has a small staff with a lot of acreage to manage, iNaturalist will help officials gather information from visitors to determine what other programs will be necessary in the future. For now, it is only being used for Starkey Park.

“With Starkey Park being the largest park we manage here in Zionsville and one of the more diverse, I thought it would be a nice way to get an idea of what is actually there,” Murdock said. “What kind of animals do we

“If someone takes a picture of a mushroom and they aren’t sure what it exactly is, they can take a guess. Other people can go in and verify if it’s a particular species,” Murdock said. “The nice thing with that is if you’re a professor or a manager for a conservation area or park, you can actually then pull that data to see really and truly what is in your area.”

ZPD reserve detective retires

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com By trade, Paul Watson was a mechanical engineer for Eli Lilly Co. In his spare time, he was a reserve police officer and later a reserve detective for the Zionsville Police Dept. public safety Watson, 76, recently retired as a reserve detective.

“It was just like any parttime interest, mine just happened to be in law enforcement,” said Watson, who had been in the reserves since 1980. “I appreciate the Watson experience and the people I worked with. I enjoyed it very much.”

They appreciated him as well.

“We went through reserve school together when we were both a lot younger and had dark hair,” ZPD Chief Robert Knox said. “Several years ago, he started helping the full-time investigators out, and he’s done a phenomenal job. But it’s got to the point where he thinks it’s his time to relax a bit. He’s a smart fellow and we’re going to miss him a lot. He’s one of the nicest guys you want to meet.”

Watson, a Zionsville resident, said the minimum work requirement was 16 hours a month, but he did much more than that.

“At first, three shifts a week were filled by a reserve officer, but later on as the department grew, we had multiple officers,” Watson said.

“When I started doing investigations, it wasn’t a set schedule.”

Watson, who was involved in design and construction project management, retired from his engineering job in 2000.

Watson said he spent 30 to 50 hours a month on investigations the last several years.

“I enjoy the challenge of it,” Watson said. “I enjoyed the training. I enjoy the comradeship.

I enjoy the feeling of having a mission and working together, the teamwork. I enjoyed the contact you made with people in the various situations, figuring out what was going on and solving the issues.”

Typically, Watson would help with reports of thefts or suspicious activities.

“One of the things I was happy to do and enjoyed a lot was I was one of the original members of our bike patrol,” Watson said.

Watson and his wife, Gretchen, a retired music teacher, have three daughters and eight grandchildren.

More than 100 wizards and witches visited Diagon Alley at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library Feb. 21 for a special program celebrating Harry Potter Book Night. Next year, the library plans to take visitors to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Not many people can say they’ve lived in a library, but the Diffendal family calls the former Hussey Memorial Library their home.

The Hussey home was doprofile nated to the town in 1957 and turned into a library in 1962.

ing a kitchen, three bathrooms, a family room and a garage.

When the Diffendals considered purchasing the home three years ago, “we just couldn’t understand how it could have been a library,” said Alysia Diffendal, who moved to Zionsville from Michigan with her husband and daughter. “I certainly had not ever seen a town have a library in a house.”

Most traces of the former library were erased during the initial renovation, but a few bookcases and steel beams in the basement are relics.

“It makes sense because there were thousands of pounds of books on top of them,” Diffendal said. “It’s nice that the new library is in a location that’s still walkable for people in the village to go.”

When the family first visited the library, Diffendal told her daughter “some of these books were once in our house.”

Passersby often stop by to reminisce about the home.

“The outside looks so similar to folks,” Diffendal said. “They probably envision the inside of it still covered with books.”

Old library photographs show a historical marker that once was in front of the former library but is no longer on the property.

“I want to know where that went,” she said. “That would be awesome to have.”

Christ Lutheran Church holds Day of Service Realty Group

Each year, Christ Lutheran Church in Zionsville organizes a Day of Service, during which congregation members are sent to work with area charities and serve the community.

The day begins with a blessing before members travel to about a half-dozen charities.

One such charity is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, an international nondenominational organization that serves the poor. The society operates Beggars for the Poor, which provides a hot meal each Saturday morning, a food bank, a distribution center where donated goods are given to the poor based on need and a new retail store selling gently used items. The new store is named Mission 27 Resale in honor of St. Vincent de Paul’s feast day, Sept. 27, 2016.. Profits from the store will support the Changing Lives Forever program, which teaches people how to lift themselves out of poverty. Christ Lutheran Church members went to all of those locations in September to serve.

When the Christ Lutheran Church members volunteered at Mission 27 Resale, the task was to get the store ready for opening. That meant sorting through donated goods to organize them for display. The store opened in the same building that houses the distribution center, on the near east side of Indianapolis in a 110-year-old former factory. The goal of the sorting process was to select good-quality items to stock the store and organize them for display. Items that do not meet those standards were diverted for recycling.

Is it still February?

Commentary by Ward Degler I am trying not to trust the weather. Last week it got up to 70 deplain talk grees, but I decided not to go outside and start yard work. It’s still February, and it could start snowing at any moment.

I noticed that daffodils and crocus are poking their heads out of the ground as well, but that’s got to be a fluke. After all, the groundhog promised six more weeks of winter. Three down, three to go.

Besides, the furnace still runs day and night. I haven’t noticed any break in the gas bill. And the fireplace is still cozy in the evenings. Definite signs of winter.

Just to be sure, I checked around the fish pond. The Lenten rose that blooms there all summer shows no signs of life, and it’s the first plant to wake up, other than the crocus, of course.

Come to think of it, when I was a kid in Wisconsin, crocus bloomed in the snow. Of course, everything blooms in the snow in Wisconsin, right up until Memorial Day. Minnesota is worse. I wore a parka and mittens the first few times I mowed my lawn up

there. I had to do it that way. We had a party planned for the Fourth of July.

We’ve had so little snow this winter that I haven’t used my snow shovel once. Now that I think about it, I don’t even know where it is. I probably should find it. After all, it’s still February.

I pondered all these things the other day while sipping a cup of coffee out on the front porch. I often sit out there during warm summer evenings and watch the neighbors out walking with their dogs. Folks and their dogs were on the street the other day, too, even though it’s still February.

I even saw a couple of robins in the front yard. That used to be a sure sign of spring.

But a few years ago we spotted robins hanging around in the middle of winter. I don’t think we can trust them any more.

March is just days away, and that means spring is almost here. But so are the basketball tournaments. And that is definitely a sure sign of winter.

Legion cruises donations to hospitals

Members of the Zionsville American Legion caravanned to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children Feb. 11 to deliver $1,500 in gift cards and a carload of new toys. The donations were made possible through the 10th annual Josiah’s Ride: Cruzin’ 4 a Cure, an event that raises funds to help local children diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma. The October 2016 event raised more than $18,000, bringing the grand fundraising total to $115,215 since 2006. The legion previously presented checks totaling more than $15,000 to the families of Hadley Lehr and Kizmin Summers.

Cooper’s Battle Cooper began exhibiting symptoms of a Chiari malformation and mitochondrial disease around his first birthday, but doctors didn’t confirm his diagnosis until he turned 3 years old.

“It was scary, because we knew there’s such a wide spectrum with (mitochondrial disease),” Jami Casavan said. “With the exception of how tired he got, if you didn’t lift up his shirt or pay attention to his feeding backpack, a lot of times you wouldn’t know he had anything going on.”

A Chiari malformation is a defect in the structure of the brain that can cause headaches, numbness and other problems. Mitochondrial disease is caused by failures of the mitochondria, which are present in most cells and create energy needed for vital organs to function. It can be difficult to diagnose and affects everyone differently. Its symptoms can include seizures, strokes, developmental delays, inability to walk and many other life-threatening problems.

As Cooper spent months of his life in the hospital, Jami and Kara did everything they could to keep life as normal as possible for him and their daughter, Kaitlin, 13, who attended Zionsville West Middle School but is now taking classes online so she can participate in the pre-professional day program at Indiana Ballet Conservatory.

“I went on her school field trip the day before he died,” Kara said. “It was hard, but it was a decision we made because we still are her parents, too, and we still have to parent her, regardless of what happens.”

Even when Cooper took a turn for the worse in October 2013, his parents had hope that he would pull through as he had so many times before.

“Right up to the second that he crashed, we were going home at some point,” Jami said. “We just never even thought what was going on wasn’t going to get better enough that we weren’t going to go home.”

Before Cooper died, the Casavans had begun building a home in Whitestown’s Eagle’s Nest neighborhood.

“He was so excited about moving here and building a house. He loved visiting the model and helping us look at lots,” Kara said. “Unfortunately, he would never see us move into the neighborhood, but we knew it was what was best for our family. To that point, he was right. We have been so lucky to move into such a great neighborhood.”

Music icon one for ages Long before I had the tremendous opportunity to interview jazz, rhythm and blues and pop legend Al Jarreau, I was a fan of his musical genius. My favorites among his albums are Jarreau (1983) and High Crime (1984). While maintaining a vigorous performing schedule through 2016, Jarreau left it all on stage for his fans. I attended two Al Jarreau concerts, the most recent in 2014 at The Palladium.

It was after that performance when I last spoke with Jarreau. Between that and an interview, which was a three-part conversation over three days, Jarreau was a genuine delight – positive and upbeat, even when discussing challenges he faced. Al Jarreau died Feb. 12, in Los Angeles, one month before his 77th birthday. Calling Jarreau versatile and energetic would be obvious and terribly understated. Yet triteness prevails when attempting to describe the five-time Grammy winner, who, even after surgery in 2000, still exhibited boundless energy, whether discussing his charitable work with Verizon Reads, autographing his latest CD and posing for pictures with a seemingly endless line of fans and well-wishers, or reading to inner-city school children. Getting Jarreau to sit down long enough for an interview proved challenging but well worth the effort one day in 2004 at a Washington D.C. bookstore. During his appearance, Jarreau entertained an intimate group of nearly 100 with stories, impromptu scats and his sense of humor. He loved his audiences, and they loved him back. Jarreau, indeed, was an American treasure, thoroughly expert at his craft and engaging with everyone he encountered.

Of this, that and the clutter Commentary by Terry Anker The spectacular weather led many of us to get outside and take advantage of it. With the calendar reminding that we have many weeks left of potential winter, it is too soon to do traditional spring projects like clearing the flower beds. So, our family took it to get a solid start on the ritual seasonal purging of our garage. Through the fall and winter months, it piles with assorted “treasures” – those things that have been deemed unworthy of an on-going place inside the house and yet too valuable, in some indecipherable way, to be put into the trash. Each spring, we find the resolve to shed ourselves of the accumulated debris – some to sell, some to friends or family, some to charity and some to the Dumpster.

There is a decided cathartic effect in moving an item from one place to another, on its journey out of our lives. We accumulate all manner of goods (books for our children, dresses for special days, trinkets from our travels) and hold them long after they have

fulfilled their purpose. Our youngest, now 16, is more “Car & Driver” than “Nursery Rhymes.” At some point, long ago, his favorite books made it from the bedside table to a box in his closet. This winter break, he took occasion to empty the closet of non-essential gear to make room for the expected Christmas bounty. The children’s books, which had previously been imbued with some unknown significance, were deemed surplus (happily, he kept a few).

Ultimately departing his room, they landed in a corner of the garage. Like river sediment, the books were stacked with other stuff and lost from sight. Today, they were unearthed and reconsidered. Tomorrow, they head to Goodwill. It takes time to distinguish clutter from prized possession. It feels good to know the difference.

I’m not going to lie, people. I’m having one heck of a good weekend. Doo and I decided to take advantage of my parhumor ents’ snowbirding agenda and snagged a few days with them in their Florida rental. No kids, no shoes, and most importantly, no responsibilities whatsoever. Heaven, my dear friends. HEAVEN. But I find myself struggling to slow down. I woke up this morning and nearly hopped out of bed just so I could get to the beach. Then I realized it was only 5:30 a.m. I had to mentally talk myself into staying put and enjoying the next few hours of dozing. Once I did finally arise, I again had to squelch the need to get moving. What’s the hurry when the only thing planned is an early dinner and Jeopardy?

Which just goes to reinforce my dream of retiring early, a few months on the Gulf Coast, days spent working jigsaw puzzles and playing bingo and evenings passed with microwaved potatoes and game shows. Believe me when I say I was made for the geriatric lifestyle.

But I digress. Back to me and my inability to slow the frick down. I suppose it’s a survival mechanism. I have to constantly be “on it” at home or else my youngest will be abandoned at dance or the dog won’t be fed, or God forbid, we’ll run out of milk. Juggling work, family and the house is so mentally and physically taxing that I simply don’t have time to let my guard down. And because I’ve been in high gear for years now, I often operate on full power subconsciously. Which, come to think of it, is probably why I never feel rested in the morning.

The real bugger is that by the time I adjust to the slower pace, my brief vacay will be over and I’ll be right back in the mix, having to pay the Catch-up Piper for my few moments of heaven. But even a small slice is worth it!

Everything I’ve written for the last 15 humor (fifteen?) years is first sent to her via e-mail (email?) to make sure there are no spelling or usage errors. This week she is very busy with an out of town (out-oftown?) commitment, so I’m doing my own proofing. If I said I wasn’t nervous, well that would be a bald-faced (bold-faced?) lie.

Newspapers that publish my column have editors who check my work, but I wouldn’t want whoever (whomever?) has that responsibility to think that on a week to week (week-to-week?) basis, I’m not a careful writer. I would be really embarrassed if they continually (continuously?) found mistakes in my column, so Heidi is a preventative (preventive?) measure to be sure I get it right.

I know a little about grammar, but when it comes to some of the other nuances of language, I’m not sure I can pass muster (mustard?). If I have specific questions, I might check things out on the internet (Internet?). I wouldn’t want to put my column on my website (Website?

Web site?) if it weren’t error-free (error free?).

Unless you have your own personal copy edi-

tor (copyeditor?), you won’t know if you’re in the mood for an ice tea or an iced tea. Or maybe some French fries (French Fries? french fries?).

And when you get to the airport, you won’t know whether (if?) you should check your carry-on luggage or your carryon luggage.

Heidi gives me free reign (rein? range?) with my creative ideas. And she is always consistent. That’s the kind of person I can depend on (upon?). She may be the best proofer in the mid-west (Mid-West? midwest? Midwest?). Some writers prefer a hands-off approach to their work, but I really need her help. I like it when she hones (homes?) in on my mistakes. I don’t mind if she splits hairs (hares?).

Few people know all the do’s and don’ts (dos and don’t’s?) of the language. I’ve had discussions among (between?) a great number (amount?) of writers and they all agree you need a person like Heidi, although your ego can sometimes get quashed (squashed?).

Yes, I really need her. Even my wife, Mary Ellen (Mary-Ellen? Maryellen?), agrees.

I was an atrocious sorority member.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved manners my sorority sisters. I loathed the rules and decorum. I did anything to get out of meetings and events, pretty effectively, too, until senior year someone discovered I had not yet fulfilled a governing role.

That’s how I became etiquette chair.

Never mind I had no clue how to set a table.

I nearly flunked Mrs. Kinnear’s (an Indianapolis icon) junior cotillion. But I learned.

To this day, I am forever grateful for the white gloves which separated my hands from the sweaty palms of my dance partners. I’m glad to know which fork to use first at a formal dinner.

And I am regularly complimented on my firm handshake.

Maybe this is why our culture is so angry.

While social media has brought us together, it’s like we’ve all been let loose at a junior high cotillion where no one knows the polka, the band has lost its beat and everyone has taken their gloves off.

Some would argue we live in a new era, but I suggest common courtesy, respect and manners

never go out of style.

There’s good reason our mothers told us never to talk about religion or politics with strangers.

There’s good reason not to expect a host to accommodate your peculiar dietary needs (Not everything is all about you).

A few other real life manners which might apply online include: • Don’t announce that you have to go to the bathroom, but politely excuse yourself (Don’t overshare).

• Chew with your mouth closed (no one wants to see that).

• Don’t point (when you belittle someone, you’re really belittling yourself).

• Start a relationship with a handshake (get to know someone before you spout off).

If I learned anything from being etiquette chair, manners don’t mean you’re a stick in the mud. No one likes a mud-slinger. And without manners—online or off—that’s all we are.

There’s no substitute for routine wellness visits and consultation with a medical professional, but it’s important to know what’s normal for your own body.

Here are three specific areas you should pay attention to.

Skin According to OutrunTheSun.org, “more than 120,000 Americans are diagnosed with melanoma each year.” That’s why the medical community recommends that every adult should routinely monitor skin changes over time. And this applies to your partner’s skin as well, especially on the back. In addition to looking for new moles, non-healing scabs and changes in color or size, know your A, B, C, and Ds: • A — Asymmetry. Melanoma lesions are often irregular.

• B — Border. Melanoma lesions usually have irregular borders that are difficult to define.

• C — Color. Multiple colors can be an early warning sign.

• D — Diameter. Melanoma lesions are typically greater than six millimeters.

Breasts Recently, there has been some debate over the value of breast self-exam. Many women don’t perform it regularly or at all, and it has been known to lead to unnecessary biopsies.

However, self-exam is still useful when used in conjunction with annual physical exams beginning in early adulthood and mammography beginning at age 50, or earlier if you are at a higher risk. Some bumpiness is natural.

Men can also suffer from breast cancer, but because the prevalence is low, there is no recommended routine screening.

Testicles The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force states, “There is inadequate evidence that screening by clinician examination or patient self-examination has a higher yield or greater accuracy for detecting testicular cancer at earlier (and more curable) stages.” However, it also states that “most cases of testicular cancer are discovered accidentally by patients or their partners.”

The decision to perform either a clinical or self-examination should be a shared decision between you and your physician based your individual risks and benefits.

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Strongbox Commercial has filed a petition to develop a Tom Wood Toyota dealership in Zionsville. development Strongbox filed the petition at Zionsville Town Hall Feb. 14. It is scheduled to be presented to the Zionsville Plan Commission March 20.

The property is on 9.8 acres owned by the Wood family east of I-65 and south of Whitestown Parkway, behind Cracker Barrel and the Marathon gas station.

According to the documents filed with the town, a portion of the property is in a flood zone and a storm sewer would need to be removed. Whitestown is responsible for the sewers in the area and would be involved in reviewing the plans, along with the Boone County highway department, which would oversee a portion of the project.

The plan for the property calls for 333 parking spaces. According to materials submitted, Toyota requires 321 spaces at its locations.

Zionsville resident Paul Kite is one of the principals for Strongbox Commercial, which develops and constructs real estate properties in Indiana and Texas.

Recently celebrating 50 years of business in Indianapolis, Tom Wood Automotive Group owns 13 dealerships in and around the Indianapolis area, with four additional locations out of state. They also manage divisions of Power Sports and Outdoor Equipment.

Tom Wood and Strongbox officials did not return calls seeking comment.

As the Valentines flowers begin to droop their heads, wilting…and the heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are slowly consumed…it may seem as though the spirit of Valentine’s Day is over; however, love may still be in the air. The choice to begin dating is a personal one and only that individual knows when the “time is right”. There is no correct legal answer or Court Order restricting divorcing parents from dating. While it is not “illegal” to date during your divorce (or thereafter), there are some practical considerations you may want to consider if you are contemplating a new relationship, especially if you have children.

When should my children meet the new person in my life? If children are involved, you may consider withholding the introduction of this new person to your children until the relationship becomes serious. The changes and transitions children experience during and after their parents’ divorce can be difficult (even if the divorce is ultimately in their best interest) and this new relationship can be confusing depending, largely, upon the ages of the children.

Introducing your children to your new significant other(s) will likely

only confuse your them, and may even cause additional animosity between spouses during the ongoing divorce case.

Also, prior to introducing a new person into your children’s life, you must remember that his/her character, family, and history can sometimes play roles in the Court’s determination of custody and parenting time in your divorce case, depending upon this person’s involvement and relationship with your children. Utilizing the “best interest of the child” factors, the Court will be interested in your new significant other, as he/she will help shape and impact your children’s environment going forward.

Looking forward, if you do decide to begin dating again, either during a divorce or thereafter, you may be wise to consider a prenuptial agreement, if the relationship becomes serious. As we enter into an era where “happily ever afters” take a few tries; why not ensure and protect your children, in case divorce does occurs.

Since prenuptial agreements allow for the freedom to carefully fashion and navigate through the structure of separation through open communication, you will no longer find yourself with the harsh realities of divorce and at the mercy of Indiana equitable distribution laws.

Courtyards of Zionsville construction under way

When complete, the development Courtyards of Zionsville will have 59 homes along with a clubhouse and pool on roughly 19 acres north of Oak Street on CR 950 East.

Although there are no covenants restricting children, developer Larry Neer said that Epcon Community is one Neer of the largest builders in the U.S. targeting baby boomers. The expected low numbers of children means the development will have little impact on Zionsville schools, a selling point to the Zionsville Plan Commission when it approved the project last year.

“We know based on the type of home that we sell that 1 percent or less of our buyers have school-aged children,” said Neer, who along with his brother is developing the Courtyards of Zionsville as building franchisees of Epcon.

“We’re not age-restricted, but there are no steps unless someone wants to build a basement,” Neer said. "It’s just meeting that empty nester who wants to stay in their community.

They want to downsize and they want low maintenance. That is our concept.”

Yard maintenance and all exterior work is maintained by the homeowner’s association.

Neer said that similar communities have been successful in Mooresville and Hamilton County.

All of the homes are detached condominiums in three designs and expected to be complete at the beginning of 2019. The first homes are expected to be occupied by the end of April, with a goal of completing three homes each month moving forward.

and $375,000, with the price increasing with each phase of property development. Neer estimated that the average buyer is adding $60,000 in upgrades. Eleven homes are already sold.

The Neer brothers are former Zionsville residents and hope to return soon. They have previously developed homes in Stonegate and the Indianapolis area.

‘Bye, Bye Birdie’ flies into ZWest for 3 shows

The 1950s musical inspired by Elvis being drafted into the Army is coming to Zionsville West Middle school. theater “Bye, Bye, Birdie” is a departure from the previous two Zionsville West shows of fanciful fiction from Dr. Seuss and Shrek.

“I wanted to do a show that depicted a specific era, something that was grounded in real life,” said director Lynne Manning, who has directed six other middle school productions. “It’s been fun to talk about why this is important, what does this mean."

With a cast and crew of 65 middle school students, the abbreviated version of the Broadway musical runs one hour, with some of the original storylines and songs omitted or altered to be appropriate for a younger audience.

Eighth-grader Emily Doehring plays teenaged Kim, a die-hard fan of singer Conrad Birdie. She said that she isn’t as “fan-girly” as her character.

Doehring was a tree in her first middle school production but feels that helped ground her with performing.

“It was a really humbling experience for me, and it helped me grow as an actress more,” she said.

This is the second production for Benjamin Weber, who portrays Birdie’s manager, Albert Petersen. The eighth-grader said he enjoyed the musical taking place during an actual time period and did some research to understand song lyrics such as in “Kids."

Tickets are available on performance nights at the middle school for $25 per family, $5 per student or $8 per adult. The show will be at 7 p.m. March 10 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 11.

Yep, Where’s Amy has found a new favorite theater after attending Carmel Community Players sold-out “Suite Surrender,” a comical farce directed and produced by CCP’s Artistic Director Jan Jamison. The play takes place at the Presidential Suite of the Palm Beach Royale Hotel in Palm Beach, Fla., in 1942. It’s a night of chaotic, nonstop crazy fun full of surprises, twists and turns. I could not stop laughing and loved every single minute of it.

Every cast member took ownership of their roles, which were demanding and spot-on.

Jamison put together a stellar ensemble that shined, and their comedic timing was superb.

The impressive set, stylish and sparkling costumes and an adorable four-legged star named Mr. Boodles also helped make this hysterical play a hit. The audience was in stitches from beginning to end, with a well-deserved standing ovation at the conclusion. Bravo to this talented cast and crew who allowed me to sneak backstage to snap some photos just minutes before the performance. The Town of Zionsville will celebrate Youth Art Month during March. The Zionsville Fine Arts Dept. organizes the education event, which emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for high-quality art programs in the schools.

Throughout the month, several local businesses and educational buildings will display artwork created by Young students in grades 1 through 12.

SullivanMunce Cultural Center will host a Youth Art Month First Friday Reception from 5 to 7 p.m., March 3. Refreshments will be provided, and all are welcome to attend the event.

“The main show will be for the kids, but we also thought it would be interesting for the parents and the kids to be able to see the teachers’ art as well,” Sullivan Munce Executive Director Cynthia Young said.

have the two largest collections of student artwork this year.

“Every year we get more and more visitors,” Young said. “It has really grown over the years.”

A goal of Youth Art Month is to increase community, business and governmental support for art education by involving local entities in the display of student artwork.

Justin Patten is an elementary arts teacher for grades 1-4 at Boone Meadow Elementary and Stonegate Elementary schools. Patten helps promote Youth Art Month in the community.

“A lot of the art teachers are excited to do it and look forward to seeing their students' work out in public,” Patten said. “It’s awesome to have the businesses be so supportive. It definitely adds to the Zionsville art scene.”

In addition to the display of student artwork, free art classes will be offered at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library during March, including classes on pop art, painting and building suncatchers.

The goal was to design a kitchen with better work flow and cosmetically update the adjoining spaces.

1. In the kitchen, a pantry was removed to create a designated space for the refrigerator and a beverage station. Below the beverage station is a drawer that houses dog bowls that can be hidden away when not in use.

2. Bulkheads and low ceilings were removed to visually open up the kitchen and create more cabinet space.

3. The kitchen island was created to be as functional as possible. It houses a drawer for trash bins as well as designated locations for appliances.

4. The living room now has custom built-ins and an updated fireplace surround.

5. The powder bath now features a tile accent wall that really gives the space the style it was lacking before.

Before Background Info: This 1970s home in the Brookshire neighborhood in Carmel was in need of many functional and aesthetic updates.

Before problems: The owners were looking for design strategies to develop more functionality in their home and meet their stylistic needs. Their kitchen had low 8-feet ceilings and unpractical functionality. Their family room lacked personality and the powder bath was dated.

The Church of the Beatitudes Commentary by Don Knebel The Church of the Beatitudes, located above the north shore of Israel’s Sea of Galilee, remembers Jesus’ Sermon on the travel Mount, among the most famous sermons in history. The church is named for the Beatitudes in that sermon, eight statements beginning with the word “Blessed.”

The Bible does not indicate where the Sermon on the Mount was given beyond saying that Jesus “went up on a mountainside.”

In about 380 A.D., Egeria, a Spanish pilgrim, wrote a report on her trip to the Holy Land in which she claimed to have identified the hill on which Jesus preached, and another area in which he fed 5,000 people from five loaves of bread and two fish. Based on Elgeria’s description, the Byzantines built a church honoring the Sermon on the Mount on the side of a hill once known as Mt. Eremos, just west of Capernaum.

In the 1930s, the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary asked Italian

dictator Benito Mussolini to help them build a new church above the ruins of the Byzantine church. Mussolini, who had been baptized late in life and needed the Church to support his regime, agreed. Mussolini commissioned Antonio Barluzzi, an Italian Franciscan monk who had become famous for designing churches in the Holy Land, to design what became known as the Church of the Beatitudes. The church was constructed between 1936 and 1938 and features a Byzantine-style dome with gold mosaic and eight marble sides symbolizing the eight Beatitudes. The church is set among gardens and trees and provides a magnificent view of the Sea of Galilee and the fertile Plain of Gennesaret. In March 2000, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass at the church, speaking to a crowd assembled on the hillside below just as they might have been at the time of Jesus.
