Wolf Run receives unfavorable recommendation

A plan to transform the former Wolf Run Golf Course into a neighborhood with hundreds of homes PLAN COMMISSION is heading to the Zionsville Town Council with an unfavorable recommendation from the Zionsville Plan Commission.

Commissioners voted unanimously against the Wolf Run rezoning request at their Feb. 20 meeting, citing a lack of updated plans and communication with nearby residents as reasons they couldn’t support the proposal.

“I’ve never seen (a proposed planned unit development) with this many levels of revisions three months into the process,” ZPC President David Franz said. “You’re not anywhere close to even having a document or any specifics built in. It’s troubling that it’s taken this long, and it’s almost like we’re starting over.”

originally proposed a maximum of 360 singlefamily homes and mixed-use buildings with retail and offices or up to 200 multi-family housing units on 223 acres at the southwest corner of US 421 and SR 32. In January, Burton said he would remove the 12 acres of retail and apartment uses from the rezoning petition.

Jim Shinaver, an attorney speaking on behalf of Burton, asked the commission for a 60-day continuance so the project could be refined and technical questions answered.

He said the next plans submitted to the town would include removing the mixed-used area from the rezoning request, eliminating an entrance on CR 900 E and adding one on SR 32, reducing the number of residential lots by 40 and adding a permanent open space buffer between the development and the Timber Wolf neighborhood, among other changes.

The commission voted 6-1 to deny the continuance request before sending it to the town council with an unfavorable recommendation. The council is expected to discuss the project at its March 5 meeting.

After the meeting, Burton said he was “very disappointed” with the outcome. He said his team didn’t have sufficient time to make the many requested changes after the January meeting, as updated plans were due to the town only two weeks after that.

“We’ve had numerous meetings with staff and with the mayor’s office, and they’d been wholly supportive up until a couple of weeks ago,” Burton said. “I don’t feel we were given the opportunity tonight, and subsequently the opportunity in April, to present really where we are after having listened to the plan commission, the town and the neighbors. We weren’t given the opportunity to present that plan.”

Construction on a new roundabout at Whitestown Parkway and Indianapolis Road is set to begin in CONSTRUCTION April. It is being built to help address an increase in traffic in the area.

“Our Eagles Nest neighborhood has already increased traffic through that intersection in recent years. The new Westwood Landing neighborhood is being built now, bringing in another 204 homes to the area,” said Jason Lawson, Whitestown director of public works. “Soon, another 600 homes will be built around the golf course at Whitestown’s Golf Club of Indiana. In addition to all the new residential, the new Park 130 at Whitestown business and industrial park was just approved to be built just north of that intersection on Indianapolis Road.”

A traffic study identified a roundabout as the best solution for the intersection.

“Since roundabouts keep traffic moving, drivers will be able to get through more quickly and efficiently,” Lawson said.

The project is a partnership between the Town of Whitestown and INDOT. The total cost of the project is $2.4 million. Eighty percent of the project will come from federal funds, with Whitestown paying the remaining 20 percent, roughly $485,000.

Whitestown will be responsible for all future maintenance of the intersection.

“It’s common for INDOT to partner with communities to get construction projects done more quickly and easily,” Lawson said.

“Last spring, Whitestown and INDOT partnered to reconfigure (I-65) Exit 130. We will partner again to build the proposed new midpoint interchange between Exit 130 and Exit 133 in 2020.”

The intersection will remain open throughout the project, although occasional lane restrictions are expected. Lawson said drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route or give themselves a little extra time during the construction process.

Rev. David Williamson figures he will be ready when the time comes to take over as senior pastor FAITH at Zionsville United Methodist Church.

Williamson, the teaching pastor at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, will start his post Williamson July 1. The benefit of waiting is extra time to prepare for coming to Zionsville.

“We will have time to join them for staff retreats, some of the staff meetings and get to know them,” Williamson said.

“I feel well prepared for the role,” he said. “I hope to enter July with a little more knowledge and relationships than most pastors get.”

Coyner is a retired bishop in the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Williamson is replacing Rev. Glenn Howell, who is now working for the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana in Fishers.

Williamson, 41, was formerly a pastor in Rush County at Milroy UMC. “In my eight years at St. Luke’s, I have worked in about every area of the church,” he said.

Williamson’s wife, Jamalyn Peigh Williamson, is an outreach minister at St. Luke’s.

Williamson and his wife are starting a nonprofit, Advance Haiti, to work on several projects in Haiti. The couple, who lived in Haiti for a few years, has been ministering in Haiti since 2003.

The couple and their two children, Margaret, 11, and Nathan, 9, live in Indianapolis but plan to move to Zionsville this summer.

Coyner described Williamson as a “great choice” for senior pastor.

“I preached (at Zionsville UMC) several times and know a lot of people there,” Coyner said. “My main job is to keep things running smoothly until the new pastor arrives.”

Jim Burns is the president of HomeWord, an organization he founded in 1985 that provides tools for families to become God-honoring units.

“I felt the Zionsville community would benefit greatly from his life experience and real-life advice,” Strueh said. “He is a speaker that is approachable and wants to help parents.”

Road, park plans discussed

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com During the Feb. 20 State of the Town address, Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak outlined the 2018 and STATE OF THE TOWN 2019 goals of the town’s street and parks departments and other infrastructure plans.

Street and Stormwater Haak said the town’s goal is to focus on one large project every year because it requires so much time and money. This year’s focus is the redesign of Zionsville Road from 96th Street to the Village area. It will have three lanes, a bike path and walking path.

The road will be closed all summer for construction, which Haak said is the best option to decrease costs and project length.

“The goal is then, in the next year or two, our parks department will extend the Big-4 Rail Trail from the 100-foot bridge to Zionsville Road and then you’ll be able to make a loop into town,” he said.

The major project in 2019 will be a northsouth connector road running from Whitestown Road by the high school sports complex to The Enclave at Oak Street with roundabouts at both ends. Haak said the project should alleviate traffic on Ford Road during the day and help people get home at night.

for the project, which will be completed in phases.

“We’re real excited to get that one done,” Haak said. “Typically, you have a schedule on how projects move along. We’re really trying to accelerate that one.”

The department also is in the process of creating its five-year master plan. The third open house to gather feedback is at 6 p.m. March 21 in the St. Vincent Community Room at Town Hall.

Infrastructure Haak said the parks, street and police departments are developing plans for separate headquarters because they are running out of space in their shared facility on Parkway Drive. The current facility will be converted into the police headquarters. The parks and street departments are planning to build facilities on the previous Rail Trail Gardens’ 15-acre parcel on S. 875 E. that the town purchased next to another 10-acre parcel the town already owned.

Haak said planning will continue this year and action will be taken in 2019.

County’s Drug Take-Back program a success

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Since the Drug Take-Back program was launched in 2014 in Boone County, more than 6.53 tons of PUBLIC SAFETY drugs — which is roughly the weight of an African bush elephant — have been taken off the streets, out of the sewer systems and out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

The program was created by the Boone County Solid Waste Management District as a way to clean up the waterways and properly dispose of leftover or expired pharmaceutical drugs. The three local dropoff locations are at the Zionsville Police Dept., Whitestown Police Dept. and Boone Co. Sheriff’s Office.

More than three tons of drugs have been collected through the ZPD dropbox. More than 13,060 pounds of drugs have been collected between the three collection bins since the program began.

“It’s just a very positive program, and it’s been a huge success,” ZPD Chief Robert Knox said.

Across Indiana, the Drug Take Back Program is helping to address the opioid crisis.

“Over the state, we’re making a dent by pulling tons and tons of stuff off the streets,” Martin said.

The drugs are placed in a dropbox and then taken to Covanta, a waste management service with an incinerator in downtown Indianapolis.

According to ZPD, medicines in homes are the leading cause of accidental poisonings, while flushed or trashed medicines can end up polluting local water systems.

The bins were purchased through a grant from the Indiana-Illinois Sea Grant, which has a mission of helping keep water quality high and contaminants low throughout the interconnected waterways of Indiana and Illinois. The Drug Take-Back program reminds people that it’s not OK to flush unused or expired medications down the toilet because of the negative impact on waterways, aquatic life, the environment and drinking water.

Gavin Merriman, assistant superintendent of Zionsville’s street and stormwater department, said regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management are not required to test for pharmaceuticals in the local water systems.

“Prior to pharmaceutical disposal options, such as the Drug Take-Back Program, people may have been forced to flush these chemicals down the drain, put them in the trash for solid waste disposal, or worse, illegally dump them elsewhere,” Merriman said. “Wastewater treatment plants are designed only to treat sanitary sewage, so many of these chemicals will simply pass through to lakes and streams.”

Grassroots group aims to reduce stigma of mental illness and substance-use disorders

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Many parents turn to Facebook for advice on topics ranging from potty training to pediatricians.

COVER STORY Yet, Zionsville resident Denise Macler noticed that people were hesitant to ask others for support in areas of mental health and substance abuse.

“There’s still a stigma out there, but there’s so Macler many people who need help,” she said.

A year ago she asked on Facebook if others would be interested in a private group to share resources for mental health issues. Within a few days she had 400 responses, including from therapists who offered to provide guidance. She soon realized the group could do more than just bounce ideas off one another and share resources.

The Facebook community soon evolved into a grassroots organization, Zionsville Cares. The group is led by a board of parents, paired with a professional advisory board, to lend support and suggest resources.

Through surveys and focus groups the organization’s mission was fine-tuned to determine how to best meet the needs of the community.

“I really want our kids to grow up in the environment in our community where it’s OK to talk about mental health. It’s OK to not feel OK.” Macler wants the organization to continue to be a fact-based resource focusing on mental health which is tied to substance abuse.

and psychotherapist, said prevention is possible when more people interacting with youth are trained.

“It’s almost like more boots on the ground,” she said.

Through the training, participants learn how to ask if they suspect someone is considering suicide.

“There’s a misconception that if we talk about suicide in teens, we plant that seed,” Samuels said. “That’s absolutely not true.”

Zionsville Cares is among other initiatives, such as Zionsville Community School’s Strong in Every Way campaign and Boone County’s Youth & Family Health Network, that address wellnes issues.

“It was the right time, and the movements were out there to get the momentum for this cause,” Macler said.

Zionsville Cares continues its focus in Zionsville because needs differ in different areas.

“You cannot do one-size-fits-all,” said clinical psychologist Sandra Burkhardt, who serves on the Zionsville Cares advisory board and has led programs in diverse areas of Chicago. “You do what you have to do to meet people where their need is.”

Macler recently reached out to Zionsville Care members to assess areas of concern.

The No. 1 issue is stress and high expectations, as reported by two-thirds of the respondents. Four topics tied as a second concern: Ending the stigma associated with mental illness, suicide, social media and understanding teen behavior and what is normal.

Television shows like “13 Reasons Why”

In late April, Zionsville Community High School will host a drug take-back program to bring awareness to families that leftover medications in their homes can lead to substance abuse for teens.

An easy drop-off location will be at the high school, monitored by police, for several hours that day.

Claire Nieshalla, the current Miss Fall Festival, proposed the event to the Zionsville Community School Board during its Feb. 12 meeting.

Nieshalla After school board approval she began working with high school students, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the Youth and Family Health Network to coordinate the event.

Substance abuse prevention is important to Nieshalla, who has seen the impact of drug use on her own extended family.

“It’s been hard for us,” she said. “I know it’s impacted others as well.” and the suicide of celebrities further the need for parents to recognize how to have discussions with their children.

One in five Indiana teens report they have seriously considered suicide. The state has the second-highest rate of those who attempt suicide, according to the Indiana Youth Institute’s “2015 Kids Count in Indiana” data book.”

Macler stressed the importance of parents learning more, even if their own families seem to be fine.

“It may not be your kid. It may be your kid’s best friend,” she said.

As someone personally impacted by suicide, Macler realizes there’s a need for support for both parents and youth.

“Watching others go through it was traumatic on my part,” she said. “I didn’t know how to help. I didn’t know what to say.

That’s hard. Being confident in knowing what to do when it arises is priceless.”

Scary trips to the devil’s commode

Grandmother always reminded us to keep our business to ourselves. Don’t air our soiled skivvies for all to see. And most of all, behave like the neighbors are watching. Perhaps we might think the constraint a bit too harsh for our modern lives. But, it did tend to emphasize the rightful difference between the public forum and a private life. We learned, rather clumsily at times, how to negotiate what is correct to discuss at the dinner table and yet not suitable for the same table in a neighborhood restaurant.

Come now this time of social media and the instant news cycle to make identifying this imagined line even a much greater challenge. The quaint, if not a bit prudish, admonishment to behave well in public seems decidedly on its way out. Off-handed comments are recorded, clipped and used in all manner of unintended ways. Challenging our suppositions in the company of others is imperative to human flourishing.

So, if we edit ourselves so that there is no private space, where do we explore our notions?

A nearby large city council has been in the news of late. It seems that there are some leadership struggles. Moreover, a pair of its members have been accused of heinous predatory acts against children. We should know about these machinations and take great care in dispensing with them.

But even as central Indiana joins in pursuit of an Amazon headquarters investment, what message are we sending? Can we find a way to fight our battles without vilifying each other? Or is honesty always the best policy? What do the neighbors think?

And, should we care?

It’s official. Our master bathroom toilet has become a portal to hell. And I’m not just saying this because the HUMOR bottom is stained and partially corroded by hard water, impervious to scrubbing, Cloroxing and even CLRing. Nor is this charge the result of postDoo-use brimstone stench, which luckily “Poo-Pourri” and Lysol handle quite nicely.

No, our commode is a gateway to Hades thanks to a motion-activated nightlight that makes the water emanate an eerie green glow. Courtesy of Doo’s co-workers who thought it’d make a hilarious birthday gift, I now face the prospect of evil incarnate at every 2 a.m. lavatory visit.

And the experience is rather disturbing, actually, because each time the toilet “turns on,” it’s as if Satan himself is rising from the depths. So, there I sit, illuminated in all my natural glory, thinking, “If the girl from the Ring tries to crawl out of here, I’m done.”

One positive effect, though, has been the reduction of midnight mishaps, like tripping over shoes and running into walls. Before the highway to hell light, navigating my way to the pot meant carefully placed footsteps and arms held out straight. But now that the devil can sense my presence as soon as I cross the threshold, all I have to do is follow the beautiful, alluring luminosity of my porcelain throne.

Anyhoo, I guess the point is, if something odd or terrible should happen to me, check our master bathroom first. I mean, if the Amityville Horror family could have a well in their basement to welcome Beelzebub, it just seems fitting that we Wilsons would have a john.

A snapshot of 1963 Commentary by Ward Degler It was a chapter in my life. We could just call it the Navy. But it was more than that. It was WashingPLAIN TALK ton, D.C., in 1963. I was a junior officer in charge of a photo lab at the Naval Photographic Center.

The sign on the lab door said: Special Projects. But I knew it as the White House Photo Lab. It had a key code lock on the door, and the combination was changed every night.

As exciting as that sounds, most of the time nothing happened. Very few rolls of film got processed there that couldn’t have been run through the local drug store. I never got to the White House. I never met the president.

The lab was there in case it was needed — in case of a national emergency.

Mostly, we processed film shot by the first lady: Vistas around the city, ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery, young John Kennedy’s birthday party. The toughest part of my job was remembering the key code for the door.

My boss was a lieutenant commander named Jerry Pulley. He knew that 90 percent of my job was about as exciting as the reference section of a library. He also knew the remaining 10 percent could be

explosive.

“When that happens, your job is to keep me out of trouble,” he counseled.

“And you’ve got a crew that will do the same for you.”

And so it went until a fateful day in November. In a matter of hours I was whisked off to the Pentagon with my crew of photographers. On the day of the president’s funeral we lined the street and photographed the crowd. Guys wearing sunglasses collected our film every half hour. An armed guard stood outside the Special Projects lab.

We processed hundreds of rolls of film.

Most had at best one or two shots that were inspected by men in dark suits who never smiled, recorded and filed them away in drawers marked Top Secret.

I left the Navy some time later and returned to civilian pursuits. I recently learned that Lt. Cmdr. Pulley died several years ago. I’m sorry I never got to see him after leaving the photo center. But I’m sure he was pleased that during three volatile days in 1963, I did my job and kept him out of trouble.

Remembering ‘Big John’s’ voice Commentary by Dick Wolfsie For the past several years, I had the pleasure of reading my syndicated weekly humor column on WFYI radio. I HUMOR was listening to some old audio files and realized that, like so many other people, I don’t like the sound of my recorded voice. This reminded me of a dear friend I wrote about five years ago when he passed away, a man who really did have a voice for radio.

John Gillis was as tall as a grizzly bear but as gentle as a teddy bear. The 40-year veteran of Indiana broadcasting was an iconic figure whose loyal followers looked up to him.

“I guess being 6-foot-4 helps,” he joked.

Each word that tumbled off John’s tongue was not only meticulously chosen, but it was savored by listeners for still another nanosecond before he went on to the next.

“His 60-second traffic reports,” said longtime associate Jeff Pigeon at John’s funeral, “lasted about eight minutes.”

John once remarked: “I have 20 seconds to do what I have to do, read a sponsor’s name, and then if I can figure out a way to

twist a word or inject my personality into it, that’s it — I’m a disembodied voice, and every 10 minutes I stop what I am doing and talk to my imaginary friends.”

Radio was John’s best friend.

“Everywhere you travel, it’s there. It takes you places immediately. It exercises your imagination,” he said.

John regretted how media was changing.

“We went high-tech and lost the high touch,” he told me. “Radio should be about content, character and personality.”

“Big John” had many opportunities to leave the Indianapolis market and pursue a more lucrative career. That was not in his flight plan. His job was on the air and in the air, but his feet were on the ground. He loved Indianapolis. He was wedded to WIBC. Why break up a happy marriage?

If you still hear his halting, yet mesmerizing, voice in your head, look to the heavens. No, he’s not in the helicopter, but he’s up there. Trust me.

POPCORN She opened an Inga’s Popcorn location in Bloomington in 2012, then one on Zionsville’s Main Street in 2013.

But now she’s closed both retail locations, maintaining kitchen operations in Bloomington to supply popcorn to Indiana University football suites, West Baden Springs Hotel and one Main Street shop.

“It’s just time to make a change,” she said.

Her six classic flavors — caramel, cheddar, sweet and cheesy, caramel pecan, snickerdoodle and white cheddar — will continue to be sold at Ballerinas and Bruisers.

Owner Steve Schwartz has been a supporter of Smith and started carrying her popcorn last summer when she moved to a new Zionsville location.

“He’s really been the greatest guy to help me get the whole thing started,” Smith said. “He was a vote of confidence for me from the very beginning.”

Specialty flavors will be available on occasion when Smith has time to make them and feels there’s demand.

“If it just doesn’t sell out quickly I don’t want him to have it,” she said. “Then I’ll have to eat it.”

The business began as a family operation, with Smith receiving help from her older children. Through the years, her children have moved on to other careers, leaving

ATI presents ‘Lillian Baxter & Friends’

By Zach Dunkin zach.dunkinl@youarecurrent.com “Dressing in drag isn’t something I necessarily enjoy,” singer-actor John Vessels said. “Gluing on false CONCERT eye lashes is like gluing on giant spiders.

And the padding? I don’t have the right kind of Vessels curves. It takes a lot of scaffolding to make me look like a woman.

“It’s a lot of work.”

But it comes with the job. And it’s probably not what you are thinking.

“Lillian Baxter is a lady all the way,” Vessels said. “She’s not a drag queen.

They’re a little different in that Lillian is a nice lady.”

Lillian Baxter, aka John Vessels, and three other “nice ladies” – totally females – will present the world premiere of “Lillian Baxter & Friends: We Enjoy Being a Girl” at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The Actors Theatre of Indiana shows will be at 7:30 p.m. March 9 and 10.

Vessels describes the show as a “revusical” – part revue, part musical.

“The show has a girl-power theme set in 1976, so wear your wide-legged pants,” Vessels said. “It’s a concert, a cabaret, with loads of comedy and lots of reminiscing about the good ol’ days.”

Supporting Baxter are the fictional vaudeville Humperdink Sisters, friends

from Baxter’s showbiz past, and pianist Corky Weinstopper, Baxter’s third and favorite of her seven ex-husbands. A gay partner with Baxter’s pool boy, Weinstopper wears elegant pajamas when he plays.

Weinstopper is actually Jay Schwandt, Vessels’ real-life partner who also arranges the music for all of the shows.

“The twist on our show is that the sisters haven’t realized they are not little girls anymore,” Vessels said. “They are trying to find their grown-up voices.”

Vessels created Lillian as a has-been MGM movie star. Actually, he “stole” it from himself after he originally had set out to write the show for a female singer. Then one day, Schwandt asked Vessels if he thought the character could be played by a man.

“Oh, maybe,” was Vessels’ response. “Then what we found out along the way was that I could sing in the same key as an Irish tenor and an old belter from the MGM days and Julie Andrews. I could sing in the old belter keys, so we wrapped the first show (there are now three) around that. From there I just made her up.”

The final character was a mediocre 1950s-60s performer during the days at MGM, who advanced to a short TV career on such hit shows as the “Thrifty Vittles Happy-Time Song Hour.” Despite her failure to reach real stardom, that never stopped her from spinning her tales with never-ending pride and joy.

“She is a classy dame, no matter the circumstance,” said Vessels, a familiar face on the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre stage.

What Vessels likes most about portraying Baxter is the reaction he gets from the audience.

“The crowds have been really, really responsive,” he said. “The shows are funny, but there’s also a lesson to be learned and a little heart to each show that kind of surprises the audience. When that dawns on them, well, watching that light come on thrills me.”

At 75, Ronnie Milsap has no plans of slowing down.

“I’m always in the middle CONCERT of one ( a tour),” Milsap said.

Carmel Community Players, which has been in operation for nearly 25 years, is searching for a new home.

THEATER On Feb. 14, CCP received a letter from Clay Terrace giving the theater group 30 days to vacate its space at the outdoor shopping mall.

Clay Terrace has been the home for the small playhouse since 2009. It now needs to look for a new short- and long-term space for shows that are already scheduled.

CCP will continue with its production of “American Buffalo” at Clay Terrace from Feb. 23 to March 4, but its April production of “Ragtime” has been moved to the Ivy Tech auditorium in Noblesville. It’s been shortened to two weekends because of larger seating capacity and will run April 20 to 29.

Clay Terrace had given CCP a short-term lease at a fraction of market value, so CCP leadership has no animosity toward Clay Terrace.

“While the timing of this announcement was sudden, it was not totally unexpected,” CCP President Tim Paramore said. “We knew that one day the competitive demand for space in Clay Terrace would force us to

move our playhouse. That day is now.”

Clay Terrace will remodel CCP’s space and a few nearby spaces to accommodate new tenants. Several other displaced tenants had found other spaces elsewhere at Clay Terrace.

Founded in Carmel in 1993, CCP is the oldest community theater group that was established in the city. It also is the only one that is completely volunteer-operated.

Actors Theatre of Indiana and Civic Theatre are professional organizations with paid positions.

“We have enjoyed having Carmel Community Players as a tenant and important part of our Clay Terrace community over the past eight years,” said Jennifer Jones, Clay Terrace’s area general manager. “We have offered assistance in helping Carmel Community Players find a new location.

We wish them the best as they find a new home and continue to provide quality entertainment to the community.”

Phipps said CCP was prepared to announce its 2018-19 season at its May meeting, but details might change. He said it has shows in mind but those could change depending on the size of its new space. The hope is for a minimum of 4,000 square feet.

ZWest musical rolls into town

With a litany of faPRODUCTION miliar songs ranging from “76 Trombones” to “Ya Got Trouble,” the student production of “The Music Man Jr.” will be at ZWMS March 9 and 10.

The family friendly musical is set in the quiet Iowa town of River City in the early 20th century.

“The people of River City fear what they don’t know,” director Lynne Manning said.

“A stranger coming to town is the catalyst for change.”

The stranger is played by eighth-grader Jake Stevenson, who describes his character, Harold Hill, as “a charming con-man” who convinces the town residents to invest in a marching band.

“You see these people change their ways,” Stevenson said. “Harold makes the town interesting.”

The company includes 63 middle school students working on and off stage. Ste-

venson was part of the backstage crew last year, giving him an appreciation for all aspects of theater and the importance of everyone’s job.

The show will be at Zionsville West Middle School March 9 at 7 p.m. and March 10 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets at the door are $5 for students, $8 for adults and $25 for a family.

The main focus of the kitchen remodel was to open up the space and make it function better for the owner while creating a cohesive design that flows nicely with the rest of the home.

1. One of the largest changes came from enlarging the footprint of the kitchen by expanding into the butler’s pantry. This created more space in the kitchen and allowed for better flow.

2. Another major change came from replacing all of the cabinetry and countertops, in addition to adding a built-in island for counter space.

3. The backsplash was replaced with a traditional white subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern, and a stainless steel rangehood was added above the stove, giving the space a modern yet traditional look.

For once, it’s not the millennials getting the blame for the downfall of civilization. Today, I’m GRAMMAR GUY blaming Apple. But the good news is — if anyone from Apple is reading this column (I’ve heard Grammar Guy is big in Cupertino) — they can fix this with a quick update to their iOS. Last year, Apple’s autocorrect feature had a hiccup: When people typed in “I” it would autocorrect to “A.” A couldn’t believe what A was seeing. Fortunately, enough people brought it to Apple’s attention that the company that gave birth to Siri (or was it the other way around?) fixed the bug in an iOS update.

As an iPhone user, I can’t speak for Android- or Windows-based phones, but Apple’s autocorrect gets confused when I type plural days of the week. Sometimes it adds an unnecessary apostrophe and sometimes it leaves Tuesdays alone. And, remember my apostrophe philosophy: Apostrophes are like sentence confetti, adding a fun flair to your scintillating syntax. But a misplaced apostrophe is

like confetti at a funeral – inappropriate and impossible to undo.

When I type “I like to eat waffles on Fridays” into a text message, Apple’s iOS correctly leaves my sentence alone.

However, when I type “I hate Mondays almost as much as Garfield,” autocorrect changes Mondays to Monday’s. In this instance, Mondays doesn’t have ownership of anything? If you use a non-Apple-based smartphone, let me know if your autocorrect feature does the same thing for you.

The tricky thing is, texting “Did you see last Monday’s episode of ‘The Bachelor’” is correct, but, “On Mondays I watch ‘The Bachelor’ with my trusty box of Franzia” also is correct, and my autocorrect leaves both alone.

So, it seems like when you type pluralized days of the week on their own (i.e., I hate Mondays), Apple’s autocorrect incorrectly apostrophizes my texts. Can someone call or text Apple and let them know?
