Wrightson captures state backstroke title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Community High School swimmer Tessa Wrightson capped her senior season in a fitting fashion.

ACHIEVEMENT Wrightson won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.02 seconds during the Feb. 10 IHSAA Girls State Swimming and Diving Finals at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI. She was the fastest in prelims, too, at 54 seconds flat.

“I was really excited about it,” Wrightson said of her first high school state championship medal. “Beforehand, my coach (assistant coach Eric Meyer) really helped me out and calmed me down. I really learned a lot from that, and I’ve learned a lot from him and the rest of the coaches as well. I’ve had a good team with my coaches and teammates and appreciate everything they’ve done for me.”

and was on the 400 freestyle relay team, which placed sixth. Her relay teammates were seniors Claire Brewer and Vic Thomae and freshman Elyse Heiser. The same four

were on the eighth-place 200 medley relay team.

As a junior, Wrightson placed second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.

As a sophomore, she was fourth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 200 individual medley. She was eighth in the 100 backstroke as a freshman.

Wrightson signed in November to swim for Purdue for the 2018-19 season.

“The campus felt like home, and the coaches and teammates really welcomed me,” Wrightson said.

Wrightson competed in the Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials at the IU Natatorium last summer.

“It definitely (helped). It gave me a bigger perspective on things since it was such a big meet,” she said. “This (state high school meet) was just for Indiana, but it’s really intense and fun to compete in.”

Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees met Feb. 12 to discuss kindergarten through eighth-grade counseling materials, community events and software updates.

What happened: The board approved the purchase and implementation of Second Step, a social-emotional learning curriculum, for the elementary and middle school level to continue the district’s work in creating a comprehensive K-12 counseling program.

What it means: Kris Devereaux, chief academic officer, said Second Step was chosen because it is included in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices and rated as exemplary by the U.S. Dept. of Education’s expert panel of safe schools. Second Step’s elementary program emphasizes skills for learning, emotion management, empathy and problem solving. The middle school program focuses on mindset, goals, serious peer conflicts, values and friendships. The program will be funded by a Lily Endowment grant.

What’s next: ZCS plans to implement the program in the 2018-19 school year.

What happened: Miss Fall Festival 2018 Claire Nieshalla presented a proposal for a prescription drug takeback day, which aligns with her platform of substance abuse prevention.

What it means: Nieshalla proposed that from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during a weekday in late April the community can bring unused prescription drugs to a collection site for the Zionsville Police Dept. to discard. “A drug takeback day has the potential to clear from our community excess prescription drugs in those cabinets that may be vulnerable to being misused,” she said.

What happened: The board approved the purchase of a new antivirus, anti-malware and antiransomware program as well as a single sign-on product for the district’s devices.

What it means: Sophos, the antivirus software, will protect the district’s computers and servers. The single sign-on product, Endboard, will create one username and password for each student that gives them access to every digital resource required. Chief Technology Officer Dan Layton said the district uses more than 35 digital products, many of which require specific log-in information.

Youth learn about nonprofits

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Thirty central Indiana high school students have been selected to participate in the United Way’s Youth LEADERSHIP Leadership United program, which teaches freshmen, sophomores and juniors about the nonprofit sector and serving on leadership boards and committees.

Zionsville Community High School freshman Jack Schrepferman is among those selected.

“I had a few fellow classmates that had participated in the program in the past,” Schrepferman said. “I thought it would be a good thing to apply for because the United Way is a large philanthropy group. The program covers a lot of things. It focuses on philanthropy, social scenarios, leadership and skills that can apply to any possible field I go into.”

Coordinator Celeste Gellenbeck described the initiative as a hands-on experimental learning program.

“We’re interested in youth that want to make a difference in the community that will want to learn about leadership and are passionate about the community,” Gellen-

Students participate in an immersive classroom every Saturday through May. “They come for the whole day, and each session is different. It’s not your studious day. It’s a very interactive, team-building, fun environment,” Gellenbeck said.

Students finish the program by serving on a nonprofit board with professionals for one year.

“It’s probably one of the most valuable parts of the program,” said Maggie Phelps, leadership initiatives manager. “It’s that experiential learning piece that they’re going to get even after the classroom setting.

It puts them out in their community.”

A Hollywood ending Former Disney artist continues to defy the odds in new hometown

For Amy Duarte, moving to Zionsville was the perfect Hollywood ending.

In her case, it included saying goodbye to her career as a visual effects artist for major COVER STORY film studios and a cross-country relocation from Los Angeles to Indiana.

Now, Duarte, who has been defying the odds since she was born almost completely deaf in Indonesia, works as a motion designer at Avant Healthcare in Carmel, a far cry from Tinseltown. But she couldn’t be happier.

“It’s almost like the marriage between the medical field and the artistic field. It just worked out perfectly,” said Duarte, who creates graphics and videos to make medical concepts understandable for the average consumer. “I’m using the skills that I used in Hollywood here.”

Duarte, 40, spent the first decade of her life in Jakarta, a place that provided few opportunities for people with disabilities despite being the largest city in Indonesia.

So, when she was 11 years old, her parents sent her to live with her aunt and attend school in Quebec, where she received a better education than she could have back home. Two years later she moved back, but not for long. In 1991, the entire family moved to Los Angeles.

It was a welcome move for Duarte, who had a lifelong dream of working in the film industry. “(As a kid) I was watching the Disney cartoon ‘Cinderella’ and was magically enthralled by it, the way the mice would make the dress for Cinderella and the part where they were singing, ‘We can do it, we can do it,’” Duarte said. “It just stayed with me, the magic of drawing something and bringing it to life. I just knew it’s something I wanted to create.”

Duarte enrolled in classes at California State University, Northridge and caught her first big break during her freshman year. She had been mailing comic bookstyle letters to her friends, using cartoons to depict life events. One friend had left a letter on a coffee table when a commercial director stopped by for a visit and requested to connect with the artist behind the images.

That led to a job creating commercial storyboards for McDonald’s when Duarte was just 19 years old. And that was just the beginning.

During her junior year, Duarte landed an internship

with Disney. After graduating college, the studio hired her full time. She began as a layout assistant during a period when studios were transitioning to digital methods of filmmaking. Her youth worked to her advantage.

“I was a relative newcomer to the field, but I was able to host little workshops to teach the veterans digital media,” Duarte said.

Duarte rose through the ranks at Disney and eventually worked for other studios, too. Her first major credit was as a compositor on “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.” Other works include “Fantastic Four,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Spider-Man 3,” “Iron Man 3” and many others.

As an artist, Duarte was responsible for creating backgrounds, special effects and modifications to real life. In the movie “Fever Pitch,” for example, the director tasked her with sculpting some of the former professional athletes-turned-actors to resemble what they looked like during their playing days years earlier.

Clara Chan, a computer graphics supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks Canada, worked with Duarte on

a few movies in Los Angeles. She described Duarte as trustworthy and well-liked, both personally and professionally.

“Amy is a very kind person who is always optimistic and cheerful. She is very animated and brings a fun energy to everywhere she goes,” Chan said. “She is a hard worker who always does her best and is eager to learn.

She is extremely creative and has a unique artistic style in her design.”

Duarte experienced the frustrations of anyone working in a Hollywood visual effects studio.

“Sometimes film directors can be like a kid in a candy store,” Duarte said. “They don’t know what they want because there are too many options.”

She faced unique challenges as well. Because she is dependent on reading lips during a conversation, she often had a difficult time during sequence review meetings in crowded, dark theater rooms.

“It wasn’t easy,” she said. “There were days I felt defeated, but I never gave up.”

After more than two decades living her Hollywood dream, Duarte and her husband, Max, decided they were ready for a scene change. They had visited Zionsville often to visit Max’s sister, Susana Suarez, a member of the Zionsville Town Council, and had long felt it would make a good home, Duarte said.

The couple and their two young children moved in May 2016 and have not been disappointed.

“Everybody here has been so welcoming,” Duarte said. “I really see the meaning of Hoosier hospitality.”

Duarte’s path to Zionsville was not the traditional route. Through her struggles and successes, she’s followed her life motto: Trust the journey.

“It was the harder path, but at the end I see that there was a purpose for it,” Duarte said. “Growing up there were times when I questioned God and it felt so unfair. I saw all my friends who didn’t have the struggles I did, but in the long run I saw that God had a purpose for

me. Maybe I’m still figuring out what my ultimate purpose is.”

Despite her many accomplishments, Duarte is still dreaming. She wants to one day have an art exhibition of her own in or near Zionsville.

So, in many ways, her move to Zionsville was just the beginning.

Sweet little biographies Amy Duarte sometimes misses working in Hollywood, but she’s letting her creative juices flow through a project that makes stars out of local children.

Sweet Little Biographies allows parents to capture some of their favorite aspects of their children through a personalized design by Duarte. She draws the child doing one of their favorite things and surrounds the image with things he or she loves, such as favorite foods, movies or pets.

“Parents can capture their child at that moment,” Duarte said.

The project has been so successful that some parents have said they want a new drawing every year, Duarte said.

She has a waitlist for orders.

“I’m very honored that I can do this to make a lot of local moms happy,” Duarte said.

Commentary by Terry Anker “You are brushing your teeth all wrong,” she said, seemingly a bit concerned that the basic skill had not been mastered some years earlier. Was the well-intentioned hygienist serious? There was a bit of indignation.

But as the reasons behind the admonishment unfolded, her point was made. The expertise, though long mastered, had been interpreted through the eyes of a child and lacked maturity.

Taught to pursue the exercise in personal hygiene about the time we exit elementary school, most of us assume that we’ve long figured out the task and have it fully under control. We know how to brush our teeth.

Yet, is it conceivable that techniques have improved, needs have changed and, perhaps, we shouldn’t let a 9-year-old determine how we maintain our oral health?

It is said that one cannot teach an old dog new tricks. But how many decisions in our lives, made years before, continue to constrain our thinking and limit our alternatives? How much could we advance if we simply undertook to improve our method?

Many argue that change for its own sake is a good unto itself. Others rightly hold that consistency is the superior plan. Is there a place between the two – one that urges us to routinely reevaluate our behaviors and thoughtfully update them?

There is little doubt that old habits die hard. Still, we know that they rarely die of natural causes. If we took inventory of the choices that rule our lives, how many of those choices have long outlived their freshness dates?

Learning the hard way Commentary by Ward Degler The newspaper was right where it always was — in the middle of the driveway. Fine, except today PLAIN TALK the driveway was a sheet of ice. I knew I would break every bone in my body if I tried to walk on it.

Just as I was thinking about trying it, anyway, a sparrow flew down to the drive, enticed by a stray seed, and skidded across the ice before ruffling its feathers and flying away in humiliated disgust. It reminded me of a cartoon where Daffy Duck was showing off his ice-skating prowess, lost control and skidded into a tree, which caused about 50 tons of snow to break loose from the tree and bury the poor duck.

I was in a quandary. Being a creature of habit, I need my newspaper and coffee in the morning. Without the paper, I might as well go back to bed.

I needed something to reach the paper and pull it off the driveway. I tried the snow shovel, a broom and a stray twoby-four. All, too short.

Desperate, I searched the garage and found an old extension cord that didn’t have a plug at one end. I figured I could use it like a lasso, catch it under the edge of the paper and haul it in. Easy-peasy.

The problem was extension cords tend to be stiff. And when they have been rolled up for several years, they will stubbornly stay that way.

For several long minutes I stood at the edge of the driveway, heaving this coiledup wire onto the ice. The thing about coiled up wires is they make poor lassos. They just look like long, spindly coil springs bouncing around on the ice while completely ignoring the newspaper.

Frustrated, I pulled the wire in and painstakingly straightened every coil.

Then I began flinging it onto the driveway again. Over and over I cast my trusty lariat, looking like an idiot.

Finally, the cord caught on the edge of the paper. Slowly, I pulled it in as I edged closer to the edge of the driveway and under the low-hanging limbs of the smoke tree by the mailbox.

Just as I reached for the paper, I slipped on a patch of icy leaves and fell hard against the smoke tree. About 50 tons of snow broke loose from the tree and buried me.

Suddenly, I knew how Daffy felt.

Well, it’s finally happened, friends. The dreaded “I hate you” came spewing forth from my 13-year-old after I HUMOR grounded her, along with an evil stare worthy of Damien himself. I replied, “I love you!” But as soon as she slammed her bedroom door, I burst into tears. Teenage girls!

I should have known my time would come. My older daughter has been a relatively drama-free child. I don’t know whether she bottles it all up and vomits her vitriol quietly in the night or if she’s one of those kids that is rarely phased by anything. Regardless, I’ve been lulled into a false sense of security that running the mom-of-girls marathon would be over a flat course with frequent hydration stops and plenty of motivational signs.

Wrong! I can’t say anything right. I’m either too “up in her grill” or not involved enough, and all of my rules are stupid.

Furthermore, none of her friends have ever been grounded, and how does keeping her home on a Saturday night teach her anything, anyway? “Don’t talk to me!”

Ugh, I hate this discipline stuff. Mothers are programmed to make their babies happy, not ruin their lives, which, according to her, I’m clearly intent upon doing. And Doo’s out of town, which means I’m in the parenting ring alone against a strong-willed eighth-grader who’s not afraid to throw a sucker punch.

I know I’m doing the right thing and that she’s merely testing her boundaries, but sweet mercy. If this is a sign of things to come, I’m in deep trouble.

The other day, my wife’s cell number popped up on my caller ID. “Hi, Mary Ellen.”

HUMOR “I adore you,” came the reply.

My wife is a loving person, but she is not given to romantic declarations on her way home from work. And yet, she added, “Sometimes, I can’t get through a minute without thinking about those romantic times we had in Rio.” What could be more romantic than Rio? The problem is: I’ve never been to Rio. I kept listening: “While my husband is still alive, we will never find happiness. We have to get rid of him. Soon.”

I found this disconcerting.

Then I heard a man’s voice: “You are the brightest star in my galaxy, the cherry on my cake, the rose in my bouquet.”

It was bad enough my wife wanted me eliminated, but being killed with clichés was not how I wanted my life to end.

When Mary Ellen got home, I let her know I was aware of her desire to have me whacked. I wasn’t subtle.

“Mary Ellen, you are the brightest star in my galaxy, the cherry on my cake, the rose in my bouquet.”

“I’m so embarrassed. How did you hear that?”

“You accidentally hit redial on your cellphone. I overheard the conversation in your car. How long has this been going on?”

“Since last month. I was trying to end it, but you know how hard that can be. Once you start something, you feel like you have to finish it. I’ll pay the penalty.”

“You’re certainly cavalier about the whole thing. How much longer do you see this continuing?”

“Not much longer. My book on CD was due at the library yesterday. It’s trashy, but I have enjoyed it.”

I’m glad Mary Ellen doesn’t want to liquidate me, but she is hurt that I was so suspicious. So far, I haven’t been man enough to say I’m sorry.

As of today, the apology and the CD are a day overdue.

Conner Prairie Museum to offer seven camps

Breaking their own record last year for OUTDOORS summer camp participation at 2,226, the interactive history park’s camp programming is always popular, as camps sell out quickly.

“Conner Prairie’s grounds offer a unique experience,” Conner Prairie Summer Camp Manager Julie McCarthy said.

“Hiking trails, the White River for canoeing, a swimming pond, the historic grounds and our tethered helium balloon provide an unmatched summer day-camp experience.”

Adventure Camp Conner Prairie’s flagship camp. Campers will take part in ziplining, swimming and water sports, horse riding, archery, hiking and more. School of Rock camps boost interest, ends in show

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Kristin Rauh called enrolling her son Aidan, now a Guerin Catholic High School freshman, in his MUSIC first School of Rock summer camp in 2013 one of the best decisions she ever made.

“Being totally immersed in the music for five days allowed Aidan to explore his interest with several different instruments,” Rauh said. “The summer camp gave us an opportunity to trial the School of Rock program and introduced us to the amazing instructors and staff. We loved it so much we’ve been with the program ever since.”

Amy Tobias said the camps have been the perfect thing for her son Sam, a Carmel Middle School eighth-grader, to do in the summer.

“School of Rock is a wonderful atmosphere for kids to not only grow their musical talents, but also grow their confidence and teamwork and develop great friendships,” Tobias said.

Sam is signed up for the Classic Metal camp this summer.

Elyse Causey, School of Rock regional manager, said this is the seventh year of camps in Carmel and the second year in Fishers.

“The beginner camp might be our most popular,” Causey said. “It’s a great way for

younger kids to not only start learning an instrument but to become fully immersed in learning one, and to really jumpstart their learning. Parents are always amazed that when they drop their kid off on Monday having never picked up an instrument before, and they come back for the end of the week show on Friday, their kid is not only playing an instrument but playing in a band, and playing fun rock songs.”

Causey said students who have been playing for a longer period have their choice of themed camps: a Foo Fighters camp in either Carmel or Fishers, or a Classic Metal or Songwriting camp in Carmel.

“These camps are designed to help push students in their skills on their instrument in drums, keyboard, guitar, bass or vocals by being fully immersed in playing in a band setting for a full week,” Causey said.

“The students perform eight to 10 songs on Friday afternoon on the patio at Soho Cafe in Carmel or the Kroger patio in Fishers in front of family and friends.”

Causey said the Fishers site is offering a shortened summer camp for ages 6 to 7 in the week-long rookies camp, which will meet for three hours each day.

This year, Fishers Parks and Recreation is expanding its summer camp offerings.

“This year is all about opPARKS tions,” Parks Director Tony Elliot said. “In the past, we have done half-day camps and a range of different camps from recreational to environmental and educational-based camps.”

Experienced and novice sailors ages 8 to 17 will have a chance to learn something new during IndiaON THE WATER napolis Sailing Club’s Junior Training Camp on Geist Reservior in one-week sessions for six weeks beginning June 18.

“I really believe that this camp, other than being such a unique experience by being on the water and learning how to sail and being in a sailboat, it teaches a lot of good, lifelong lessons,” sailing camp director Michelle Sarber said. “We talk about the weather, we do a lot of knot tying, and knowing how to sail is just one of those skills. We have kids 4 years old and sailing and older adults in their 80s still sailing.

It’s really a lifelong sport.”

In addition to the Junior Training Camp, which targets novice, intermediate and advanced levels, the Indianapolis Sailing Club will offer a new, three-day race camp for advanced sailors only.

The camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Kids are encouraged to bring their own lunch and are required to bring a life jacket. Some of the camp takes place in a

classroom, so camp is not canceled due to adverse weather.

Each camp tops off at 30 kids, and Sarber said the adult-to-kid ratio is 1 to 4.

Campers to experience ziplining

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Ziplining, archery and swimming are just a handful of activities offered during the Boys & Girls Club of NoADVENTURE blesville’s Camp Crosser.

The camp offers sessions for spring break, summer break and fall break. Registration for summer break camps opens March 26. Camps begin June 4 and continue through July. Camps last one week, with an overnight camp each Thursday.

BGCN Director of Development Nathan Helm said registration is first come, first served, and slots fill quickly. Sixty campers will be accepted for each summer session.

“The purpose of Camp Crosser is to provide our local youth with an opportunity to step outside into nature and experience the adventures it has to offer. Camp is an experience that every kid deserves, and there’s nothing like watching their faces light up that first time they experience our zip line across the White River,” Helm said.

“In a high-tech, fast-paced world, our kids need that chance to step away from their devices while learning and exploring the great outdoors.”

Camp Crosser is for youth ages 6 to 12 and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Students ages 6 to 13 will have the opportunity to learn valuable STEM – science, technology, engineering EDUCATION and mathematics – skills while playing the popular game Minecraft.

Indy STEM Camps will offer six different Minecraft options with 30 camps at six different locations around central Indiana with camps beginning June 4 and continuing through July 20. Camps range in prices, beginning at $150 for three hours a day for one week. Registrants have the opportunity to sign up their children for two sessions a day for a full-day camp as well.

Camp sites this year include Zionsville, Carmel, Indianapolis, Avon, Noblesville and Fishers.

Although Indy STEM has offered other types of camps in the past, Indy STEM Camps director Matthew Mullholland said Minecraft camps are the most well-received.

no other computer game can,” he said. “Our camps provide a safe and secure social environment that integrates STEM through the use of a computer game that students know and love.”

Among the different camps, kids learn coding, 3-D printing and more by playing Minecraft.

“It is a setting that allows them to develop STEM-related skills in a game they already know and love,” Mullholland said.

Camp Cathedral will kick off its annual summer camp programming in early June with nearly 40 camp programs, STEM and this year, the camps are unique, covering many areas of interest, including academic and STEM camps, to camps on cooking, writing and filmmaking and more.

But some camps, like the week-long Mermaids & Unicorns Camp for kids in Kindergarten to grade 3, may stand out among the rest. Camps on popular book and film franchises, like Harry Potter and Star Wars, along with the annual Superhero Camp, also will stand out.

About a dozen of Cathedral’s camps have a strong science, technology, engineering and math tie, covering popular themes like Minecraft and Lego.

A heart-to-heart conversation Commentary by Mark Fisch February may be most associated with Valentine’s Day, but it’s also Heart Month and a great time to learn SYMPTOMS the symptoms of a heart attack.

What are some lesser known facts about heart attacks?

A common misconception about heart attacks is that they are painful, particularly in the chest. This is not always the case.

Instead, you could feel pain or discomfort in your arm or jaw. You could also have nausea or unusual breathing.

Men and women might also have different heart attack symptoms. The most common symptoms for men include pressure (chest discomfort), shortness of breath, discomfort in one or both arms, discomfort in the neck or jaw, cold sweat or nausea.

Women might also have chest pain and some of the previously mentioned warning signs. More often than men, however, women might notice breathlessness, fatigue or that they just don’t feel quite right.

What happens during a heart attack?

Your heart muscle needs to receive a good blood supply at all times to function properly, and your coronary arteries supply the blood. Without adequate blood, the

heart lacks the oxygen and vital nutrients it needs to work properly. This can cause chest pain. A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery becomes blocked, stopping blood flow to the heart muscle and damaging it.

If you think you’re having a heart attack, it’s important to remember that the moments following the heart attack matter the most. Call 911 immediately if you experience symptoms, and don’t drive yourself or loved one to the hospital. Emergency response personnel can start treatment on the way to the hospital. The goal is to treat you quickly and limit damage to the heart muscle. As we say in cardiology, “Time is muscle.”

One of the reasons people don’t act fast enough is because they don’t think they are actually having a heart attack. Sometimes the symptoms are ignored altogether.

For the safety of you and your health, if you experience any symptoms, seek medical attention. I always advise that it’s better to be safe than sorry.

The next step for Bredlau is to become a Certified Cheese Professional, or CCP, a process that includes an intense written exam. Currently, only five people in Indiana have the certification.

“That’s basically a doctorate in cheese,” Bredlau said.

Based on the children’s book first published in 1957, the Civic Theatre production of the tale of a tall, mischievous cat who wears a red and white-striped hat runs from Feb. 21 through March 1 “There is a sound effect for everything,” director Anne Beck said. “It keeps the sound operator and the cast completely insynch while audibly giving this storybook life off of the page. Everything is meant to resemble the original book. The black, white and red costumes. A lot of the pictures in the book are recreated with items that come on to assist, such as the door, the red box with the tricks in it and props to all aid the pages of the book unfolding.”

Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence Commentary by Don Knebel The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower in Florence, Italy, is one of Europe’s most famous cathedrals. Its remarkable dome reflects the ingenuity of a FloTRAVEL rentine goldsmith.

By the 13th century, Florence, made rich from foreign trade, had become one of the most important cities in Europe. In 1294, to accommodate Florence’s growing population and growing hubris, its city council approved an innovative design for an ornate cathedral with a 150-foot wide, elongated dome perched on a 180foot tall octagonal base. No one at the time knew how to erect such a dome, but the Florentines were confident that someone would solve that problem during the 140 years they expected the cathedral’s construction to require.

By 1418, everything but the dome was finished, and no one yet knew how to build it. There was not enough wood in Tuscany for the traditional method of building a dome over a form. Filippo Brunelleschi, a goldsmith and sculptor with no architectural training, won a competition for a design not requiring an underlying form.

Using models, he convinced skeptics that an eight-sided interior dome could be constructed from bricks, laid one row at a time in a herringbone pattern, with each row then supporting another slightly shorter one above. This interior dome could then support an exterior dome, also made of bricks.

Brunelleschi began building his dome in 1420. Because the mortar in each row of bricks had to harden before the next row could be laid over it, only one row of bricks could be laid per week, requiring 16 years to complete the dome. Today, Brunelleschi’s dome, topped with a lantern 376 feet above the ground, remains the largest masonry
