FBI leads drug-trafficking takedown

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com On Feb. 13, the FBI led a multi-agency takedown of a drug-trafficking organization centralized in the Haughville comCRIME munity in Indianapolis.

One of the areas searched was an apartment on Westhaven Circle with a Zionsville mailing address.

The Zionsville search led to the arrest of Eric Bard, 33. The operation was the culmination of a long-term investigation.

In total, 21 individuals were arrested.

On Feb. 14, U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler announced federal charges against 23 individuals for methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine distribution conspiracy. In addition to the arrests, law enforcement officials seized 40 firearms, $155,000, three vehicles and quantities of heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.

“These arrests disrupted a violent drug trafficking ring and sent a clear message – if you are involved in illegal drug activity and violent crime in our city you will wake up one morning with law enforcement at your door. This case is at the heart of our collective mission to rid our communities of violent drug offenders and the destruction their activities create,” stated Grant Mendenhall, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis Division. “The FBI, along with our federal, state and local partners, remains strongly committed to identifying and

investigating those responsible for harming our communities.”

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept., Marion County Sheriff’s Dept., United States Postal Inspection Service, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division and the Indiana State Police.

Nighttime operations requiring lane closures began earlier this month to repair a damaged bridge beam on I-465 over I-865 on the northwest side of Indianapolis in Boone County. Rieth Riley is the state’s prime contractor for this $354,512.82 bridge repair contract that calls for heat-straightening the facia steel beam under the left lane of southbound I-465 where it overpasses I-865. This will require closing I-465’s northbound ramp to westbound I-865 and detouring westbound motorists via eastbound I-465 to U.S. Highway 421/ Michigan Road where they will reverse direction to westbound I-465. In addition, the southbound left lane of I-465 and a single thru-lane on I-865 will be closed to facilitate repairs. Weeknight restrictions will be in effect between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Should work be scheduled through weekends, closures will begin at 9 p.m.

Fridays and continue through 6 a.m. Mondays. I-465 has a traffic count of 42,240 vehicles per day. I-865’s traffic count is 20,238 vehicles per day.

If the bill is approved, the Whitestown Town Council would be required to have a public hearing and adopt it as well.

“As we attract more businesses, retail, hotels and the Little League headquarters to town, it is important that we capture that revenue from our visitors to help us maintain infrastructure,” Lawson said. “If it passes, it will be up to the town council to decide how to best spend that revenue.”

Teens recognized at national competition for wool coats

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Two Zionsville teens represented Indiana at the annual Make it With Wool national competition. They creACHIEVEMENT ated wool coats and placed in the top of their respective divisions at the Jan. 24-26 event in New Orleans.

Molly Grotjan won the Indiana state competition in the senior division (ages 17-24) and Sophee Dull placed first in the state in the junior division (ages 13-16).

Grotjan’s mohair houndstooth coat took approximately 60 hours to craft and was based on a Vogue sewing pattern, with added elements like cuffs. “(Sewing) has definitely challenged me in certain aspects, and I think that can easily be applied to overcoming challenges in life in general,” she said.

Grotjan has participated in the competition three consecutive years and finished in the top 10 each time. She enjoys sewing with wool because it’s easy to work with and appeals to the eye.

“I think there’s something so unique about a textured piece of fabric, especially with clothing,” Grotjan said.

Grotjan and Dull began exhibiting their designs through 4-H. Dull received a blue ribbon at the Indiana State Fair in August 2018.

Grotjan is a freshman at Purdue studying agribusiness.

Dull wants to eventually explore fashion merchandising. She assists with her mother’s Main Street clothing store, Frances + Parke.

Dull’s coat was inspired by the classic Burberry look and required two months last summer to make.

“The hardest thing about it is finding a fabric you like,” said Dull said, who chose a cashmere blend. “I’ll choose what I want to make but finding the fabric is so hard.”

Gortjan and Dull aren’t wearing their wool coats this winter but both plan to wear them next year.

“I’ve seen a lot of the coat this year,” Dull said.

“I am seeking approval from the town council to pursue $6,500,000 in bonds, with the remainder of the funds coming from reserves on CR 600S hand,” Cook said. “All of the developments in these areas will be contributing to the costs of sewer in their development that will be paid to the sewer utility. Work on four sewer projects in Zionsville identified in the Sewer Master Plan in 2011 could start as early as mid-summer. Of the four, the Oak Street portion TOWN NEWS will affect the most residents, according to Town Wastewater Supt. Barry Cook.

“This area has been in need of sanitary sewer for years as this area is a wetland and holds water in wet weather,” Cook said. “This groundwater affects how the septic tanks function, and many existing residents are having issues.”

Cook said the project, an 8-inch sewer on the north side of Oak Street from west of Cooper Road to west of Irish Hill and Irishman’s Run Creek, where the lift station will be located, will not only help residents but also will open new development along Oak Street.

The other three projects include: • Phase 1 gravity sewer on 875 East, which will open up sewer to residents on that stretch of road who have not had it before.

• Phase 2 gravity sewer on 875 East with lift station and force main, allowing sewer to be run to the western sewer border of the town and Whitestown.

• North Regional Tower, which will take sewer to the northeastern sewer service area of town, which is Michigan Road and 300 South (146th Street).

“This project (North Regional Tower) is largely developerdriven with the Holliday property getting developed,” Cook said. “But the town is involved so that the additional capac-

When my dad would vow he’d get something done, he would end with, “So help me, Hannah.” When I was a PLAIN TALK kid, I thought he was referring to his Aunt Hannah who, with her husband Claude, ran a gas station in Shawnee, Okla.

According to Dad, Aunt Hannah was a sort of den mother to much of the town of Shawnee. In addition to running the cash register at the gas station, she had tucked away what she called an accommodation shelf in one corner of the office. There, in addition to 10 gallons of ethyl from the gas station side of things, you could buy a loaf of bread, a bottle of Karo syrup, a box of Kleenex, a roll of toilet paper, a package of faucet washers or a jar of pickled beets from Hannah’s own abundant garden.

Folks in Shawnee held that Hannah was pretty much the go-to person for any lastminute thing you might need.

“Strictly for emergencies,” Hannah would say.

Grocery stores needed a special license back then, and Hannah didn’t have one. She claimed her accommodation shelf was there just to help out anyone who couldn’t get to the A&P before it closed at 6 p.m. The local licensing folks either agreed with her or turned a blind eye.

It wasn’t until recently that I discovered.

“So help me, Hannah” might have another source. There was the Hannah of the book of Samuel in the Old Testament, of course, but it’s doubtful that anyone serving Eli or the temple back then would call on the mother of the prophet for help. Particularly when by all accounts she couldn’t even help herself until God finally granted her a child.

A more likely source came out of New England’s whaling industry, where a worthless seaman would be dismissed as, “not even Hannah Cook.” The actual phrase was, “not even a hand or a cook,” meaning the man wasn’t competent do the work of a deckhand, or even work in the galley as a cook.

Fanciful, I agree, but just the kind of story New England seafaring men liked to tell.

As for Aunt Hannah, Dad said she kept her side of the business going even after Claude died. She closed the gas station, of course, but simply moved her accommodation shelf to her front porch at the edge of town. Even after a new supermarket showed up and stayed open until late at night, folks still dropped by to pick up a loaf of bread from Hannah’s accommodation shelf.

White said the hall of fame is important because organizers consider Boone County the “cradle of Indiana basketball.”

“We are one of just a few counties who started playing the game in the early 1900s, and both Thorntown and Lebanon have won the Indiana state basketball championship,” White said. “Our history contains exciting county tournaments, and sectional play was really competitive in Boone County.

One standout is Mr. Basketball Rick Mount of Lebanon High School and Purdue University, who also played in the NBA. And two sisters, Cathy Beesley Action and Cindy Beesley Aguirre, both graduates of Western Boone High School, have both been already been inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle.”

The Boone County hall also will present an annual scholarship each to a Boone County senior male and female basketball player. The scholarship amount will vary year to year.

“This year there are 33 graduating basketball players in the four schools in Boone County. These players are eligible to file for the scholarships as long as they lettered on the varsity team their senior year,” White said. “The athletic director and/or varsity coach may also recommend a player over others if they so choose. They do not have to be playing basketball in college.”

An organizational meeting for the hall of fame is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Lebanon Public Library, 104 E. Washington St., to present information on its mission and goals and discuss content for its website.

Zionsville resident a Riley Champion, keeps up with doctors who saved his life

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Dr. Matt Yuknis said it’s always nice when former patients stay in touch after they’ve recovered their COVER STORY health.

Zionsville Community High School freshman Aiden Hunter does just that with Yuknis. Even before he was nominated by Yuknis and selected as a 2019 Riley Champion, Hunter and his family participated in several fundraisers and events for critical care research at Riley Hospital for Children.

Yuknis, a Riley pediatric critical care physician, nominated Hunter partially because of his continued involvement with the hospital after he recovered from a serious illness. Hunter was a Riley Hospital for Children patient in March 2016 when he contracted influenza and bacterial pneumonia.

“The one-two punch of pneumonia he had on top of his influenza sort of sent his body into inflammatory overload, would be the way I would describe it,” said Yuknis, who treated Hunter. “His immune system was so revved up fighting his infections and reacted so strongly it started causing all sorts of collateral damage in his body.”

As a result, Hunter’s body began to shut down and multiple organs began to fail. He spent three weeks in the ICU. “He overcame an incredible illnes. He was very, very sick when he came to the hospital and had a remarkable recovery,” Yuknis said on why he nominated Hunter to be a Riley Champion. “He recovered really without longterm effects from something lots and lots of people don’t get better from. Then, on top of that, he was always back or around when we were doing ICU-specific events. Between where he came from and how good of a kid he is, how good his family is and how gracious they have been with his time, from a selfish standpoint, we really love seeing kids who get better (come see us) because we don’t always get a chance to see our patients when they get better.”

Children’s Foundation Luncheon, where they launched the year-long champions ambassadorships.

In addition to fundraising for the ICU, Hunter also helps boost the morale of the

health team at IU North.

“It is easier to be able to help when you know that you’re helping them get and raise money for (research) and you can help more kids,” Hunter said.

HUNTER’S EXPERIENCE IN THE ICU Doctors put Aiden Hunter in a medically induced coma when he fell extremely ill due to influenza and bacterial pneumonia.

He doesn’t remember much of his threeweek stay at the hospital, but his mom, Carly Anderson, recalls it well.

“When he came out of it, we asked what does he remember, and he said he remembered being at all the different hospitals, the one in the woods, cabin and castle,

and I said those were the books he was listening to in the coma,” Anderson said. “I thought that was kind of wild.”

Hunter’s parents also noticed that when they played music by the rock band ACDC, Hunter’s blood pressure improved.

“Every time it would start to get low, we put ACDC on and it would come up,” Anderson said.

Hunter’s mom, Carly Anderson, said it’s important that her family give back to Riley.

“I’m glad we still get to communicate (with Riley) because (they) were with us at probably what’s going to be the worst point in our lives, and to be able to share the good days with (them) and not just the horror we went through, it’s a blessing to get to have that opportunity and also to give back,” Anderson said. “There’s kids that don’t get to leave (the ICU), and parents that don’t get to have those experiences with their kids after the fact, and I think you guys (at Riley), with everything you went through, you deserve to get to be part of the rest of his story and not just the rough parts.”

Commentary by Terry Anker “You better think. Think. Think about what you’re trying to do to me.” So powerful is the admonishment of the acclaimed “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin, that the song’s lyrics can be sung by heart by a generation — or two or three.

The catchy tune and expert delivery may have some sway in determining the track’s longevity. Still, the verse connects with us. Our idiom is filled with reference to thought, or lack thereof.

We say “don’t think about it” rather than “you’re welcome.” We claim a “time to think” instead of demanding a break. We “think we know.” And, we “thought you understood.” We “sit and think.” And, “we think, therefore we are.” Suffice it to say, we think a lot. Even so, if we find ourselves incumbently reflective, why is it that we manage to be so thoughtless? Is it our lack of time just to think? Or is it that when we are busy that we just can’t think straight? Perhaps.

Modern life allows for little reflection. The traffic, news cycles and abundant attractive distractions all contribute to our hopelessly short attention spans. The very fact that one takes the time to read this local newspaper indicates a “thinking” superiority.

Yet, if Ms. Franklin’s point is to be made, how can we navigate our world, let alone relationships with others, absent a bit of thinking? Is it like all-too-many efforts wherein we talk much more about them than actually undertake the doing of them? If thinking matters, what is on our “thinking” list? When do we make time to address it? What is the objective, if any, of our deep reflection? Have we studied how to improve as thinkers – or do we simply expect to improve with time?

Hmm. I guess we’d better think.

My silver screen moment Commentary by Danielle Wilson Friends, my dream of becoming an actress finally came true! Sure, it was a cameo, and yes, it was in a student HUMOR film that will be less than five minutes. And OK, fine, I play a teacher, but the point is, I have fulfilled a lifelong goal. There is hope for everyone!

Now, back to me and my award-winning performance. I’m pretty sure I was amazing.

I haven’t seen the final cut yet, but by all accounts, especially my own, I nailed it. Even better, the entire experience went exactly the way I’d hoped. I was able to talk to the teenage director/writer/producer/editor/ camera man about my “motivation,” shout “line?” at absolutely no one, and incorporate a slight Southern accent and a not-so-slight eyebrow raise in a menacing fashion. Of course, like any 40-something ingénue, I goofed my scene twice and once accidentally turned my mic off, but those mishaps

simply made my time on set that much sweeter. Can y’all say “blooper reel?”

In all seriousness, I have wanted to be in a play or a movie for as long as I can remember. My four sisters and I grew up putting on Christmas skits and re-enacting scenes from classics, including “Mommie Dearest” and “Silence of the Lambs.” And I came close in seventh grade when I was cast as the understudy for the main character’s mom in our school’s religious musical. So, to actually have the chance to be in a real-life film, albeit a student short, is literally a dream come true. Don’t give up on yours. There is always time.

Editor, I am writing to express concern and displeasure with the patently derogatory and overtly political cartoon by Tim Campbell you chose to print in the Jan. 15 edition. From a quick online check, this isn’t the first time you have been called out on this. Several weeks ago, another reader expressed concern about another Campbell cartoon deriding Joe Biden. Campbell has a long history of promoting significantly right-leaning viewpoints.

It is interesting that on the same page as the recent cartoon featuring U.S. Rep. (Alexandria) Ocasio-Cortez on a dunce cap, under Policies, you mention for guest columns that they: “Should address the whole of Current’s readership, not simply special interest groups…”. As an aside, Ocasio-Cortez has a degree from Boston University. She clearly is anything but a dunce.

It is apparent that the ownership at Current feels free to promote their conservative agenda without providing a progressive counterbalance. I assure you that “the whole of Current readership” contains a variety of viewpoints. Perhaps it’s time to find a less inflammatory politicized cartoonist. I would suggest that you best serve the readership by keeping your political leanings to yourself and serve the public with unbiased reporting of the news.

A developing weighty matter Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My wife casually mentioned to me the other night that my chest needed a little development (while I suppose HUMOR your better half is permitted to assess your upper half, I’d suggest not responding in kind).

I read in Prevention Magazine that when you reach age 45, you begin losing 1 percent of your bone density and muscle mass every year. Old photos of me from high school show there was very little mass to start with, although some did roll in across my midsection in the early ’80s. Density?

I asked Mary Ellen, but she claimed I’m as dense as I’ve ever been — and she’s not one to just toss out compliments.

I was embarrassed into starting a moderate bodybuilding regimen. I do it at home while watching cable news in the evening.

Why didn’t I think of this 15 years ago? I still wouldn’t like Sean Hannity, but at least I’d be buff enough to throw pillows at the TV from my recliner.

There are two techniques I don’t perform: abductions and snatches. I don’t need any more legal trouble after getting caught walking out of Dick’s Sporting Goods with

a set of free weights. Hey, that’s what the sign said.

Thursday, I ‘’bed-pressed’’ a hefty amount: 18,000 grams. I took one really heavy dumbbell and managed to hoist it over my head.

When I put it down, the cat scooped it up in his mouth and hid it under the couch.

Mary Ellen says my resolution to lift things is a good sign. She’s hoping it will carry over to lifting a finger around the house. Or picking up the check when her brother and sister-in-law come to visit. As for me, this has all helped lift my spirits.

A few days ago, one of my macho neighbors helped me lug a new barbell set into our house. My hope was that after a few months working out with some of the lighter weights, I would one day be able to lift the behemoth weights all by myself.

Mary Ellen thought the equipment looked ugly in our bedroom, so she took it down to the basement.

Bargain fares on upscale airlines — There’s a very attractive loophole for Americans who want to fly to a foreign nation — take a foreign airline that has nothing to do with that nation. Normally, airlines from a given country are, by international treaty, not allowed to fly passengers directly between two other nations. But the terms of that 1944 aviation treaty also say that if a flight stops along the way, new passengers can start or end their own journeys at that ­interim stop. In the airline industry, these are called “fifth-freedom flights” because they’re based on the fifth item in the treaty, and airlines increasingly are taking advantage of this loophole to fly popular or underserved routes. For U.S. passengers, this can be a way to fly on an airline that’s known

for elite comfort and service including Emirates and others such as Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and Singapore Airlines. On the downside, most fifth-freedom flights occur only once a day, so if your flight is canceled or you’re bumped, the airline might struggle to quickly get you on a different flight to your destination.

The resulting number expresses how many years of strain you’ve added to your cardiovascular system with habits such as smoking, eating unhealthy foods and being inac-

tive. Heart attacks often can be blamed on factors that increase heart age, but it’s not too late to turn back the clock. To keep your heart humming, Paleru recommends: • Giving up cigarettes, if you smoke • Keeping blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes under control • Maintaining a healthy weight • Eating a healthy diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables • Being physically active • Reducing your stress • Limiting alcohol consumption “Heart health matters at every age,” she said. “A poor diet and lack of exercise can cause plaque to form in arteries as early as adolescence, paving the way for a possible heart attack in a few decades.”

Prioritize heart health for your children at a young age by teaching them to live a healthy lifestyle. You can do this by limiting sweetened drinks, such as fruit juice or soft drinks that contain high amounts of sugar, buying older kids an activity tracker to motivate them to stay moving and planning time for the whole family to exercise together, such as a bike ride, playing tag or taking a walk.

Julian Bliss Septet to perform tribute to jazz legend Benny Goodman

On Feb. 11, the IRT announced the public phase of its capital campaign, Front and Center, to ensure that these community offerings continue for generations. The campaign, chaired by community leaders Gene Tempel and Sarah and John Lechleiter, has already received $17 million in commitments toward the $18.5 million goal.

Money raised through the campaign will support the immediate needs of the IRT, while also supporting projects for the theater’s long-term sustainability and growth in Indianapolis, according an IRT news release.

“Since I was never taught jazz, I thought it was so far removed from classical stuff, so I didn’t consider it as a possibility as a kid growing up,” Bliss said. “It wasn’t until I was putting together an idea for a CD that I thought this is possible, and why can’t I play jazz and classical alongside each other? There is no reason why not, so that’s when I decided to start the band,” The Julian Bliss Septet will perform “A Tribute to Benny Goodman” at 8 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Palladium in Carmel. Goodman, known as the “King of Swing,” was a clarinetist and band leader.

“The band was established in 2010, and the first project we did was a tribute to Benny Goodman,” Bliss said. “For a clarinetist, it was quite a natural way to start, but no means an easy place. We toured extensively in the UK and all over Europe.

The last four years we’ve been coming to the USA and playing at a variety of places.

We have a secondary show now based on Gershwin, but the Benny Goodman show is one we’ve done quite a number of times.”

A jazz septet is a formation of seven musicians. Bliss said the tribute constantly evolves.

“We’re adding and changing things,” Bliss said. “With jazz, no two performances are the same. Even though we have done it for a number of years, it always takes on a new identity in every single performance we do.”

Bliss plays a variety of tunes from the era.

“We do some arrangements from the big band era, which are quite exciting,” Bliss said. “The arrangements were very diverse with the type of groups Benny Goodman had. It’s through the arrangements that we can try to tackle some of the big band num-

bers and some of the small band numbers.”

Bliss said when he put the band together, he realized he had to include a vibraphone.

“First of all, it’s an amazing instrument,” Bliss said. “When it’s played to a high standard, it’s quite a spectacle. It’s a very unique sound and bells with the clarinet quite well. Back in Benny Goodman’s day, he played a lot with Lionel Hampton, and it created a very unique sound. The other benefit of the vibes is it can play chords and provide harmony and a lot of structure, especially when you are creating the big-band sounds, so a vibraphone alongside a piano, you can have quite a lot of voices. It offers a nice contrast with

the clarinet, so that’s the idea behind the instrumentation.”

Bliss said when he performs classical music, he performs with an orchestra.

“I make sure every concert I have the same people because we all get along very well,” Bliss said. “It’s quite a collaborative effort. We’re all in it together, so it’s important to have the same people.”

Bliss started playing the clarinet at age 4. A child prodigy who studied at Indiana University at age 12, he works with ConnSelmer, a musical instruments manufacturer based in Elkhart.

“I spend a decent amount of time in Indiana these days,” Bliss said.

Visiting The Valley of the Queens Commentary by Don Knebel Most Americans have probably heard of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. Less well known is a nearby valley that contained the tomb of one of ancient Egypt’s most TRAVEL celebrated women.

In about 1600 B.C., Egyptians began burying their pharaohs, along with the pharaoh’s wives and children, in concealed tombs cut deep into the limestone in a secluded valley on the west bank of the Nile near what is today Luxor. In about 1300 B.C., with the coming of the powerful pharaohs of the 19th dynasty, new tombs in this Valley of the Kings were restricted to men. A similar valley a few miles to the south, which the Egyptians called Ta-SetNeferu (The Place of Beauty), was chosen for the tombs of royal women, probably starting with a wife of Ramses I, the 19th dynasty’s founder.

Since the early 20th century, archaeologists have uncovered more than 90 tombs in what is now popularly called the Valley of the Queens. The most exquisitely

decorated tomb belonged to Nefertari, the favorite wife of Ramses II, who ruled Egypt for 66 years and is often associated with the biblical Exodus. When Nefertari’s tomb was discovered in 1904, its contents, including the sarcophagus, had been stolen long before, but the colorfully painted reliefs on the walls and ceilings remained remarkably intact and vibrant, leading some to compare it to the Sistine Chapel. One set of reliefs in the queen’s burial chamber illustrates teachings from the Book of the Dead, including the formula the queen was required to recite to gain access to the afterlife, a kind of prompt if she forgot the words.

Other reliefs include a short love poem from Ramses. In 2016, two dismembered and mummified legs found in the tomb were identified as those of Nefertari. What happened to the rest of her remains a mystery.

I’m sure pleats will eventually come back into style. I still remember the pleated khakis I GRAMMAR GUY wore to church in the mid-1990s. My Dockers brand double-pleated pants complemented my penny loafers to perfection in order to create that “nice-Baptist-guyall-the-girls-just-want-to-be-friends-with” look I was going for.

Today, I’m not talking about pleats. I’m talking about the words pleaded and pled.

With high-profile political court cases in the news (and perhaps more to come in the near future), I thought it would be a great time to brush up on the different ways people claim their innocence while under oath.

Back in December, former personal lawyer to President Trump Michael Cohen said, “I take full responsibility for each act that I pled guilty to — the personal ones to me and those involving the President of the United States of America.” Yet, at the end of January, a New York Times article led with this line: “President Trump’s longtime adviser Roger J. Stone Jr. pleaded not

guilty on Tuesday…”

Is it possible both usages are correct?

If the past tense of “lead” is “led,” and if “bleed” becomes “bled,” shouldn’t the past tense of “plead” be “pled?” Not so fast! What about “bleat” and “bleated” or “knead” and “kneaded?” There’s no pattern to this word construction, so let’s seek an expert opinion. According to the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, “pleaded” is always the acceptable past tense form of “plead.” They assert that “pled” is considered a colloquialism, which is a really nice way of saying “bless your heart, you don’t know any better.”

When it comes down to it, “pled” isn’t incorrect, but it’s certainly losing in the popularity polls. If the federal investigators keep handing out subpoenas, we’ll all be paying attention to how each individual pleads (and also if his/her pants have pleats).
