Governor spends day in Zionsville

A month into his new job as Indiana governor, Eric Holcomb isn’t upset that he’s not yet been able to move into the governor’s politics residence, which is undergoing renovations.

With a home near 86th Street and Moore Road in northwest Indianapolis, it’s an easy drive to work at the Statehouse and to one of his favorite places to relax — downtown Zionsville. “(Main Street) is where we walk our dog,” Holcomb said during a Feb. 3 stop at Bites coffee and dessert bar. “We know the area well.”

The governor spent a day visiting with several Zionsville business owners and gathering feedback on what his administration can do to help them succeed. After a morning stop at FedEx, Holcomb enjoyed lunch at the Friendly Tavern, had his hair cut by a fellow Navy veteran at Mike’s Barber Shop and visited Black Dog Books, among other stops.

Holcomb praised Zionsville for creating a “dynamic environment” where businesses can thrive.

“We need to make sure that’s happening all over the state of Indiana on a larger scale,” he said. “Anything that the state can do to cultivate these entrepreneurial pursuits, all the better.”

The past year has been a whirlwind for Holcomb. Selected to replace former Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann in early 2016, his campaign to retain his post became a run for governor after Donald Trump selected former Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate in July.

In November, Holcomb and Pence won their election bids, and the two fraternity brothers from tiny Hanover College are now among the most high-profile political leaders in the nation.

Top volunteer – Tara Harmon of Zionsville has been named a top youth volunteer of 2017 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. As a state honoree, Harmon will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where she will join other honorees for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 students will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2017.

“It was emotional for me to see (Pence) on stage, watching him sworn in as the vice president of the United States of America,” Holcomb said. “Certainly, having a Vice President from your home state would be an advantage to any state, and I consider it a blessing.”

Holcomb entered into his role with Indiana in a “strong position,” he said, and he believes the time is right to build bridges with Hoosiers from across the political spectrum and work together for positive change.

“I don’t want to squander this moment in the political galaxy,” Holcomb said. “The stars are aligned to really get a lot done, and I think it’s more than an opportunity. It’s a responsibility to truly seize the day.”

Winter carnival – Zionsville United Methodist Church is having a winter carnival from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb 25. Schools locked down as police nab 2 suspects

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Zionsville police arrested two people Feb. 7 after an attempted burglary led to a manhunt and school lockdowns on the public safety west side of town.

Alexander Stark, 22, of Naples, Fla., and Emma Smith, 18, of Zionsville, were arrested Feb. 7 and preliminarily charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Smith also faces charges of resisting law enforcement and battery of a police officer.

The search began after a homeowner in the 9100 block of Iris Lane reported an attempted burglary when someone smashed in her slid-

ing glass door at approximately 1 p.m. Police responded and observed a gray Ford Fusion leaving the area driven by an unknown white male. They also discovered Smith in the back yard of the home.

Whitestown police located a vehicle matching the description in the Stonegate neighborhood, and officials placed Stark Stonegate and Boone Meadow elementary schools, Zionsville West Middle School and Traders Point Christian Academy on lockdown as a precaution. Schools were later released with supervised dismissal, with police officers stationed in the area.

Police described Smith as “very uncooperative” in a press release and said that she committed battery on one of the officers, who is expected to recover. She was transported to ZPD headquarters for questioning, where she gave a statement that helped police identify other suspects.

Police soon found Stark Smith and a juvenile suspect and detained them for questioning. Stark and Smith were transported to the Boone County Jail. The Boone County Prosecutors Office will make a final determination on charges.

I-465 bridges to be replaced

Two bridges over 96th Street have been earmarked by the Indiana Dept. of Transportation to be updated transportation within the next few years.

The I-465 bridge east of Zionsville Road will be replaced and realigned to be more perpendicular with 96th Street below it. To the west of Zionsville Road the southbound I-465 bridge over 96th Street will be rehabilitated on the same contract.

Additionally, the westbound I-465 to southbound I-465 bridge over I-865 is scheduled for replacement.

INDOT will hold a public hearing on the project this summer with an expectation of construction beginning in 2019. The project is in the engineering phase. A budget will not be set until the next phase of the project.

Although the road is under INDOT jurisdiction, “we’ve been allowed to be part of the process,” Zionsville Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro said, noting the interstate runs over a Zionsville-managed road.

“Our job is to make sure in working with them that whatever they do works for us in the long run,” Mitro said.

Mitro and Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said that Robison Road, which intersects with 96th Street to the south, will be re-aligned at the same time. Haak said there are plans for the town to widen 96th Street to a four-lane road within the next decade.

The bridges are being replaced because of age.

“Its functionality is over,” Haak said.

“They’re always repaving 465 because it’s so vital to transportation in Marion County.”

“Eventually, just about everything needs to be replaced,” said Nathan Riggs, INDOT information director for the East Central District.

“Engineers have to look at cost versus the time that you buy with that cost.”

Council denies Amberley rezone, OKs funds for traffic signal Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council met Feb. 6 to consider a rezoning request and appropriate funds for two long-awaited projects, among other issues.

What happened: The council sided with the Zionsville Plan Commission in denying a request to rezone 72 acres at the northwest corner of CR 400 S and CR 875 E to make way for Amberley, a proposed 120-home Beazer neighborhood.

What it means: After two residents spoke against the development, the council unanimously voted to deny the rezoning request. This came after councilors Elizabeth Hopper and Joshua Garrett said they’d like to continue the issue to the next meeting because they had a meeting later in the week with the petitioner. Other councilors questioned the timing of the meeting and moved to deny the request.

What’s next: The land will remain zoned as R1 Rural Residential.

What happened: The council approved funds to install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Oak Street and Kissel Road.

What it means: The resolution uses $110,000 from the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund to pay for the traffic light, which will be installed at an intersection that many Zionsville residents consider dangerous. Zionsville Supt. of Street and Stormwater Services Lance Lantz said the town had extra money in its Motor Vehicle Highway Fund in 2016.

What’s next: The project is expected to begin sometime this month and be complete in approximately 60 days.

What happened: The council approved using $260,000 from the Cumulative Capital Development Fund to acquire land needed to complete a pathway.

What it means: The town has long been trying to complete a pedestrian trail connecting the Royal Run neighborhood to Zionsville West Middle School but ran into problems acquiring right-of-way for the project. After an extended negotiation, the town came to an agreement with a private property owner to purchase the entire two-acre parcel of land along the area needed to complete the path. After building the trail, the town could sell the remainder of the property.

What’s next: Lantz hopes construction will begin in the spring.

When Ali Al-Rawi fled the violence in his home country of Iraq in 2007, he joined thousands of other refugees who politics found safety, support and a fresh start in the U.S. For years, he’s been working to bring his family to the U.S., too, which he said will “save their lives.” But those efforts came to a sudden halt when President Donald Trump signed an executive order Jan. 27 temporarily suspending refugee admissions and banning people from seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering the U.S. On Feb. 3, a federal judge blocked the ban. The Trump administration appealed but an appellate court stayed the ruling.

Al-Rawi’s brother and his family lived as refugees in Syria for five years. When conditions became too dangerous, they moved to Turkey. Now, he doesn’t know if they’ll ever make it to the U.S. “It’s so bad. I’m waiting for them 10 years,” said Al-Rawi, an Indianapolis resident. “I got (U.S.) citizenship two years ago, and I applied for them. I’m going to be a sponsor for them when they come, find a job for them, buy a car for them, tell them what is the system of life over here, but I think this is just dreams. I can’t make it.”

Al-Rawi is a member of Al Salam, a Muslim community center near 96th Street and Michigan Road that serves residents of Carmel, Zionsville and surrounding areas. He is among the many local Muslims struggling to make sense of the Trump administration’s policies they feel indirectly target their community.

Hera Ashraf, a Carmel resident and member of Al Salam, said Trump is only following through on campaign promises, but much quicker than she expected. Since he signed the order, she said local response has been positive, as strangers have asked about her well-being and what they can do to help.

She was overwhelmed by the show of support at a rally protesting Trump’s travel ban Jan. 29 at the Indianapolis International Airport and believes these types of events are key in responding to the administration.

“The majority of people there weren’t Muslim, so just seeing incidents like this across the country is what’s going to push us forward and get us through this bump in the road,” she said.

rhetoric is like déjà vu from his time there.

The Carmel resident believes Trump signed the orders to assure his base that he’s taking action, but he’s unsure about its impact and effectiveness.

He said the Muslim community must be “more vocal and visible now than ever before” and make an effort to reach out to their neighbors and educate them about their religion.

“The onus is on us to do that,” Madni said.

Madni is urging the local Muslim community to write to the Trump administration to outline their response to his policies and explain how the orders are affecting them. Ashraf penned a letter to President Barack Obama in 2016 expressing support after he visited a Baltimore mosque. Not only did she receive a reply, but she was invited to the White House and had the opportunity to shake the president’s hand.

Ashraf doesn’t expect a similar response from Trump, but she is urging Muslims to engage in conversations and answer questions from their neighbors of all political views.

“Now more than ever, both sides need to step out of their comfort zones and really get to know each other’s perspectives,” she said.

“That’s the only way we’ll be able to move forward.”

Afra Hussain, an Indiana University graduate student who grew up in Carmel, agrees.

“The important thing is to be positive and focus on what unites us rather than what divides us,” she said. “We’re all still Americans and we all want the best for our country.”

Teen organizes shoe drive

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com A Zionsville teen is conducting his second drive to collect shoes to help those in need.

The drive runs through giving back Feb. 24. The homeschooled seventh-grader wants to exceed last year’s donations.

“I know what it feels like to want a new pair of shoes,” Louie Mariacher said. “I thought maybe I could help kids get shoes who not only want them but need them.”

The 13-year-old first learned about the Soles for Souls program last year while doing a project on Costa Rica for his world geography and missions class at Wisdom Builders Homeschool Co-op.

“He was moved by the thought of kids not having shoes. So we decided to host a shoe drive with the homeschool co-op,” said his mom, Amy. “He and his two sisters constructed donation boxes, set out a ‘shoe-o-meter’ to keep track of the number of shoes donated and encouraged everyone to donate unneeded shoes.”

In one month’s time, 250 pairs of shoes were collected and taken to a drop-off site at Brighton Collectibles at the Fashion Mall.

to get 100 pairs of shoes,” Louie said. “This year I would like to go for 300 or 400.”

Shoes can be any type and in any condition.

The only shoes not accepted are those with wheels. Donations can be dropped off at the Wisdom Builders Co-op at First Baptist Church, 1010 E. 126th St. in Carmel, or at Mathnasium of Zionsville, 10725 N Michigan Rd. After the drive, the shoes go to a central location where they are sorted and given to help those in need.

“They also help people get out of poverty by teaching them to set up micro-businesses of selling used clothing and shoes,” Louie said.

Fur Ball shifts focus of funds

Mardi Gras will come to Boone County Feb. 18 with the fourth annual Fur Ball, a fundraiser for the Humane Society for Boone pets County.

The money raised will help defray food, medical and shelter costs for the animals, according to Susan Austin, director of animal welfare for HSBC. In previous years, the goal of the annual fundraiser was to raise money for a permanent HSBC facility, but last month the organization announced it had reached an agreement to purchase the building previously owned by the Zionsville Country Veterinary Clinic.

HSBC plans to occupy the building by the end of the month, and future neighbor, Zionsville Country Kennel, is sponsoring the Fur Ball.

“In many ways they’ve been a great partner to the Humane Society for Boone County,” Austin said.

A jester hat contest, photo booth, buffet dinner and auctions will fill the event at the Golf Club of Indiana’s Cardinal Ballroom.

More than 300 pets per year find homes through HSBC, not including pets re-homed thanks to its Facebook page, which encourages people who need to surrender a pet to post information about their animal.

“So many people are looking for animals, and it’s a great way to adopt,” Austin said.

“My goal is to help churches and parochial, high-visibility projects, get grants to help them afford the solar panels,” Whitaker said. “(St. Peter’s) is a high-visibility project, and you are able to reach the congregants. The way the grants are structured through HIPL, each church is required to reduce their energy consumption by 25 percent in addition to whatever new energy they generate. It’s amazing if you raise a little money to do things like seal the windows.”

“We started monitoring them in June, so we’ve got seven months of data,” said Penquite, a Carmel resident. “We’ve saved $1,500 and 15,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.”

Whitaker said another mission is to reduce energy consumption in the congregants’ households.

“We’d like one-seventh of the households to reduce their energy usage by a third,” she said.

Whitaker said a big step is finding ways to be energy efficient.

“Churches are empty a lot of the time, so if you can find a way to heat and cool people, and not empty buildings, an energy management system does wonders,” she said.

Zionsville researcher sending 40 rodents into space to study bone healing

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com When soldiers are injured in modern warfare, they often face devastating damage to their extremities from cover story improvised explosive devices or similar weapons.

They face a long, painful road to recovery — if they can avoid amputation.

Dr. Melissa Kacena is confident she can help. And she’s sending 40 mice into space to prove it.

The associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the IU School of Medicine has been working with NASA and the military since 2013 on a research project to test a new bone healing agent that she believes could work wonders for people suffering from traumatic bone injuries. But to test it effectively, she needs to get rid of gravity.

After years of delays and navigating red tape, Kacena, a Zionsville resident, and her team are preparing to launch 40 male mice with broken femurs into space Feb. 18 aboard a SpaceX rocket. SpaceX is a privately owned company that designs and launches spacecraft with a long-term goal to enable humans to live on other planets.

Previous treatments have shown great promise in animal trials but came up empty when tested on humans. Kacena believes it’s because they are most effective when the patient bears weight on the bone as it heals.

The trial animals are able to be up and running around with a severely damaged femur almost immediately after the damage occurs.

People are not.

“Humans are going to have no weightbearing for quite awhile,” Kacena said. “So if we could test these drugs up in space where there’s no weight-bearing, that would allow us to understand better if (the treatments) really will work in humans.”

Dreaming big As a child growing up in Colorado, Kacena had dreams of becoming an astronaut. She studied aerospace engineering as an undergraduate and as she worked on advanced degrees. She designed spaceflight hardware for biologic application as a doctorate student.

Her studies included bacterial and bone cell growth in spaceflight, and some of her research flew on space shuttle missions.

Eventually her focus turned to orthopaedics, and she thought her days of space research were over. But that changed in August 2013 when the U.S. Army approached her about leading a research team for the bone healing in space project. She had the perfect background for the job.

“Having an opportunity to do spaceflight research again brought my research full circle,” she said. “I hadn’t been doing it, and it’s a lot of work, a lot of hurdles.”

The project is already more than two years behind schedule. It suffered a major delay when a SpaceX rocket exploded in June 2015 and again when an explosion occurred during fueling for a pre-flight test in September 2016.

Kacena and her team have become familiar with adjusting their schedules repeatedly, which hasn’t been easy for a group comprised mostly of students with full schedules and

many responsibilities.

But after years of work, the team of 20 traveled to Cape Canaveral in early February.

The students paid their own way, which Kacena said shows their dedication to the project, and she’s set up a fundraising page at orthopaedics.medicine.iu.edu/bonehealingspace/ giving/ to help defray some of their costs.

Post-doctoral fellow Paul Childress has been involved from the beginning. He said one of the biggest lessons he’s learned through the project is patience. But it’s been worth the wait.

“The chance to work with NASA and SpaceX is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is exciting to think about my research orbiting the Earth,” he said. “As a bone biologist I recognize the urgent need for better treatments to help severe fractures heal quicker and more completely. These injuries can be life-altering, and far too often result in someone losing mobility and the ability to live independently. We all get a strong sense of accomplishment by researching new ways to help these patients.”

Ready to launch As the launch date draws near, Kacena knows it could be delayed once again by weather or other factors out of her control.

And once the launch does happen, the mice will be under the care of astronauts who are running approximately 100 experiments for

They’re looking for rodents who get along well, are able to handle pre-flight tests and easily eat and drink from specially designed spaceflight dispensers.

During their trip, they’ll live in two pieces of hardware called transporters.

Each transporter has two cages that hold 10 mice. Unhampered by gravity, they’ll float around in their cages and have special compartments for resting and several items they can grab for support.

The research team is setting three NASA precedents with their mice. This will be the first time: • Male mice have been sent into space.

• That the transporter hardware has been filled to capacity with 40 mice.

• Mice have undergone operations before being launched on SpaceX. other researchers at the same time.

But if all goes well, she said the results could make a big difference for those facing bone loss — on Earth and beyond. Astronauts in space lose approximately 1 percent of their bone density each month, which is a big problem on long space flights.

“We hope that we’ll learn a lot from this and about bone healing in general, because if we decide to go to Mars, with current technology it will take about three years,” she said.

The mice will be in space for about 30 days before being euthanized. Live animals are not permitted to return to Earth because of hardware limitations and timing issues. Kacena said she expects these restrictions to change within a year.

Once the samples have returned, the researchers expect to spend several months analyzing them. Kacena is eager to see the results, both on the mice and on the future careers of her research team.

“I’m in a university because I like the mentorship of students,” she said. “Having them experience this will be another really important success.”

The objective was and is to encourage discussion on any number of points. This is neither an apology for anything you have read in this space nor is it a condemnation of viewpoints counter to ours. Previously, we have made the offer to those whose views differ from ours to write their own piece in this space.

We meant it, and we still mean it. It absolutely will be printed, as long as it remains G-rated, and it only will be edited for editorial style, grammar and spelling; never would the tenor of the writing be changed. We recognize our communities are evolving, that this swath of Indiana no longer is fully Republican Central, and so the door still is open to anyone that wishes to share his or her views. Anyone. Food for thought

Food – we eat it every day and yet most of us know precious little about it. In my younger years, we grew and maintained a garden. Actually, it was a reasonably sizeable one.

My city girl-bride was charmed by the notion of harvesting our own fruits and vegetables. We ate all we could and would often preserve by canning the rest. Through the years, we became most pleased with our salsa. It was tangy and unique. In a day when Chi-Chi’s dominated our collective notion of it, ours was a something, as Monty Python’s troop might say, entirely different.

But as with many good things, life got in the way. Spraying and fertilizing a pair of juvenile apple trees to make a tasty applesauce gave way to the lure of a quick pop of the lid of the Gerber baby food jar to feed our hungry young ones. Convenience overwhelmed good intentions. Family held onto the old ways as mom continued to make

homemade applesauce long after we’d given up the pressure cooker. But eventually, we all came to accept store-bought as a fixture of our modern and more urban lives.

It is rightly said, “All things old are new again.” Earlier this year, I was encouraged to join a young, and way-more-hip, friend to take a class on canning. Deciding simple best, I stuck with pickled green beans – perfect for a game-day Bloody Mary. The result was sublime – not that the outcome was remarkable, but I was reminded of the connection between our food and us. Our Hoosier State is rife with innovation in agriculture. Today, tall buildings house indoor vertical farms, and plants grow with innate insect resistance. Maybe it is time to learn a bit more. Maybe, it is time to plant again.

As I approach my 10-year anniversary with Current, I’ll be sharing some of my most “famous” columns. Here’s the humor one that forever changed my spouse’s identity: Pardon me, but my Kentucky is showing.

Over the weekend, as I lay in bed, I heard what sounded like a small critter shuffling behind me. My first thought was “squirrel in the chimney,” but as the scratching shifted, I knew it had to be the attic. I went to fetch my man, who will heretofore be called “Doo” in reference to Loretta Lynn’s husband.

Doo confirmed that something was definitely up there, but said not to fret. I managed to fall asleep until more creepy pawing awoken me. Dang nabbit! I went outside to take a gander, but couldn’t see nothing.’ Then a demon with two pointy ears came into focus on the roofline, and I, naturally, hightailed it to safety.

At first light, Doo and his trusty broom discovered our perp, a big mother of a raccoon. He tried to scare the varmint onto the roof, but no good. The coon hunkered down between the joists. “I’ll be back,” Doo shouted, as he sped off in his truck.

Now armed with a pellet gun, Doo returned to the attic, ready to go all “Deliverance” on the critter. From the front yard, I heard pop! pop! and then Doo hollerin’, “I got him!” Though we couldn’t find a body, we claimed victory.

That night, however, our worst nightmare was confirmed. The dern raccoon was alive!

So Doo again grabbed his gun and headed into the fray, while I sprinted outside. As I stood barefoot in a bathrobe, Doo bounded from the door in nothin’ but a pair of cut-offs, yellin’ he’d finally nailed the sucker.

How Butcher Holler is that? Me and Doo, half naked at midnight, trying to kill a coon with a shotgun?

REA D ERS ’ V I EWS It’s unfair to devalue protestors Editor, With regard to your column in Current in Zionsville Jan. 31, I agree that any big inquiry into voter fraud is unnecessary and a complete waste of taxpayer money. All the key agencies that oversee the U.S. elections have found no evidence of voter fraud. For this same reason I would argue there is no need for the addition of voter ID. It is well known that voter ID would create more hurdles for poor minorities to vote.

I also take issue with Terry Anker’s column which attempted to undervalue those who have peacefully protested in recent weeks.

Whether they were on the woman’s march for

equality or the annual pro-life march in Washington, this is one way to let our government know we are here and we have concerns. To imply that this is the limit of folk’s involvement seems baseless.

There seems to be a huge effort to inundate the White House with petitions, calls, letters and emails. President Trump won the election because many people felt ignored and let down by Washington, so it seems unfair and unnecessary to devalue the peaceful protesters who want to be heard. We don’t all have the privilege of writing a weekly opinion piece in a newspaper.

HB 1002 good for Zionsville roads Editor, I know I am not alone in thinking there is opportunity for improvement in the condition of Zionsville’s roads and roads across the state. Even with the accomplishments of our street department, we have struggled — along with the vast majority of municipalities in the state — to repair, maintain and improve aging or deteriorating roads.

This statewide problem indicates certain flaws in the way funding is made available to Zionsville and other communities. We have been forced to maintain our roads in a piecemeal, short-term fashion. This lack of funding has caused yearly infrastructure budgets to fall short.

As the 2017 legislative session hits its stride, I am offering my support of House Bill 1002, a long-term, sustainable infrastructure funding plan that gets to the heart of the funding dilemma that communities like Zionsville face.

Primary components of the plan include adjusting the gas tax to restore the buying

power it has lost to inflation since it was last indexed in 2003, dedicating gas tax revenue to the State Highway Fund and to municipal maintenance budgets and expanding matching grant programs for municipal infrastructure projects. With House Bill 1002 the gas tax will be indexed annually to account for inflation, preventing similar funding dilemmas in years to come.

It takes about $2 million to rebuild one mile of a two-lane road. A major road project can literally siphon dollars away from the basic infrastructure maintenance that makes our town drivable, safe and attractive to residents and visitors.

I strongly urge you to contact your representatives to express support for House Bill 1002. This bill comes in a timely manner as our roads, and the mechanisms in place for maintaining and improving them, approach a crisis point. This sustainable, data-driven plan is our best bet as we update Indiana’s infrastructure for the 21st century.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Condiments are a male thing. You never hear a man say to his wife, “Golly, with all that ketchup on your burger, sweethumor heart, you can’t possibly appreciate the fine texture and flavor of the grain-fed beef.” Women are more apt to say, “If you put ketchup on my pot roast, I will rip your ruby red tongue right out of your mouth.”

I don’t want to brag, but I have improved just about every dinner my wife has ever prepared by carefully adding the appropriate condiment. What would her chicken marsala be like without mayonnaise? Uneventful, that’s what. How would her beef bourguignon taste without mustard? I shudder to think. Veal Oscar without horseradish sauce? Lifeless. What do I say to my wife if dinner is a bit lacking?

“My condiments to the chef.”

Here’s some final advice on condiments: 1. You can leave mustard and ketchup on your dining room table overnight. Don’t do this with mayonnaise. There is an entire cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, filled with men who hid a pastrami sandwich under the bed, forgetting that Russian dressing is half mayonnaise.

2. Always put mustard in between the

meats on the bread. Mayonnaise, however, needs to go on top of the meat. Ketchup can go either way. Never apply condiments directly to the bread. This information is the result of a grant by the United States government to a national taste-testing institute. Finally, tax money well spent.

3. Turn upside down and shake all plastic bottles vigorously before squeezing. Otherwise, the bottle will make an embarrassing sound. Or, if you want a laugh from your kids or grandkids, just say “excuse me” after it squirts. It’s foolproof.

4. Mayonnaise belongs in a jar. Buying mayonnaise in a plastic squeeze bottle would be like buying whipped cream in a box. The manufacturers should be arrested. Where is the FBI when you really need them?

Finally, it’s important that parents teach their kids about ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard at home. I don’t want the public school system passing out condiments in the cafeteria.

Noblesville’s Boice sisters take the stage at Beef & Boards Submitted content courtesy of Beef & Boards For two sisters from Noblesville, stepping on the stage is something that’s both familiar and fun. Ali and Kate Boice already have established resumes at the Theater young ages of 11 and 9, respectively, and they are adding a new performing credit this month with the production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre.

The Boice sisters will perform in the second of three children’s choirs for the show. Theirs, the “Red Choir,” is featured in the performances from Feb. 21 through March 8.

But it’s not the first time the daughters of Mark and Kristen Boice have shared a stage.

“They truly enjoy sharing in the same love of theater and being in the same shows at the same time,” Kristen said.

The girls kicked up their heels together last summer in Stonesoup’s production of “Oklahoma!” with Ali in the role of Ado Annie and Kate in the chorus playing Vivian. In the summer of 2015, Ali and Kate were the Sour Kangaroo and Young Kangaroo, respectively, in “Seussical Jr.” with Stonesoup. They also performed in The Belfry’s production of “A Christmas Carol The Musical” in December of that year. Ali’s portrayal of Tiny Tim earned her an ENCORE nomination for “Best Performer Under the Age of 18 in a Musical.”

The girls agree that memorizing their lines is the most challenging part of being in a show.

“I love being different characters, memorizing lines and meeting new actors and actresses,” said Kate, a thirdgrader at Hinkle Creek Elementary School.

Prep time: 10 minutes, plus 20 minutes cooling time Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 8 Ingredients: 1 cup sugar, divided, 1 lemon, zested, 4 ripe but firm white peaches, halved and pitted, 2/3 cup water, plus 2 tablespoons, divided, nonstick cooking spray, 1/3 cup honey, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda, 4 cups Breyers Natural Vanilla Ice Cream, divided Directions: Heat oven to 425 F. In small bowl, whisk 3 tablespoons sugar

and lemon zest for about 1 minute, or until sugar is fragrant and moist. Arrange peaches, cut side up, in 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Pour water into dish. Sprinkle lemon sugar mixture over peaches and roast 25-30 minutes, or until peaches are slightly softened and have released their juices.

Meanwhile, lightly spray cooking spray on

small baking sheet.

In medium-heavy saucepan over high heat, bring remaining sugar, honey and 2 tablespoons water to boil, stirring constantly.

Reduce heat to medium-high and cook, without stirring, about 5 minutes, or until candy thermometer reaches 305 F. Remove from heat and whisk in baking soda until blended and mixture begins to bubble.

Gently pour hot mixture onto prepared baking sheet and cool. Break honeycomb into small pieces and reserve in airtight container.

Spoon 1/2 cup ice cream into each of 8 bowls. Top with warm roasted peaches and warm juices. Sprinkle with honeycomb pieces and serve immediately.

Note: Honeycomb can be stored in airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Rotary plans Bourbon Fest

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Rotary Club is hosting a Bourbon Fest March 11, where attendees can taste a variety of bourbons, fundraiser sample food from local restaurants, smoke cigars and listen to live music.

The event will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sofi B. Estate at 9399 Ditch Rd. in Carmel.

Tickets are $40 per person with a majority of that Stanley money going to the Rotary Foundation, an international nonprofit focused on educational scholarships, humanitarian grants and the eradication of polio worldwide.

In 2012, there were polio cases reported in four countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Chad and Niger. The Rotary Foundation helps make sure thousands of children are immunized against the disease.

“My goal with fundraising is to get as much money as possible,” Rotary member and organizer John Stanley said.

Comfort Food to Beat the Winter Blues: Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Servings: 6 Sandwiches: 3 pounds pork shoulder, barbecue sauce (recipe below), 4 tablespoons Borden Butter, 1 loaf (1 pound) sourdough bread, sliced, 16 slices Borden Cheese Singles Sensations Extra Sharp Cheddar Barbecue Sauce: 2 tablespoons Borden Butter, 1 medium yellow onion, diced, 1 jalapeno, diced (optional), 1 cup ketchup, 1/2 cup brown sugar, liquid smoke, to taste To make sandwiches: Heat smoker to 210 F. Smoke pork shoulder 3-5 hours, until internal temperature reaches 150 F. Remove and wrap in aluminum foil. Refrigerate overnight.

Remove excess fat from pork. Shred remaining meat into large bowl. Mix in barbecue sauce.

Brown two slices of buttered sourdough bread over medium heat. Place slice of cheese on each piece. Top with one-eighth of pulled

pork mixture, second slice of cheese and another slice of buttered bread. Turn sandwich over when bottom slice has browned.

To make barbecue sauce: In medium skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Saute onions until soft; stir in jalapenos, ketchup, sugar and liquid smoke. Bring to boil then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 1 hour, or until sauce has thickened to desired consistency.

Blueprint for Improvement: Maximizing bathroom space Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background Info: This Geist home in the Beam Reach neighborhood of Indianapolis had unique features that were no longer functional. Also, the original 1980s aesthetics did not align with the owners’ personal style and overall vision for their home.

Before problems: Before the renovation, the bathroom was dark, outdated and confining. For the amount of square footage in the master ensuite, there was too much wasted space because of a large recessed hot tub and chopped up functions in separate areas. In addition, the shower was too small, and the ensuite lacked sufficient vanity and closet storage.

After solutions: The goal for this master ensuite was to maximize the usable space for each separate function, while coordinating with the aesthetics of the adjacent master bedroom.

1. Multiple walls were relocated to reconfigure the bathroom and closet spaces. This allowed for the closet, vanity and shower spaces to all double in size.

2. The new double-sink vanity has a significant amount of additional storage, including two tower cabinets that contain outlets inside for hiding small bathroom appliances. The beautiful cherry-stained cabinets and unique marble countertops are the focal point of the room and coordinate seamlessly with the finishes of the adjacent master bedroom.

3. A clear, frameless glass shower surround gives an open, bright feel to the new, larger shower. It also accommodates a corner seat, and two recessed storage niches, convenient for holding personal care items.

4. A new heated floor system with a programmable thermostat is a hidden feature that adds an additional level of comfort.
