Council Oks Economic Development Area – The Town Council gave its approval Feb. 2 to plans to create the Oak Street Economic Development Area. The resolution outlines plans for the town to use property taxes collected from an increase in the current assessed value in the area to renovate or build a new town hall and make other infrastructure improvements.

The area includes the existing Town Hall property, Starbucks, the Quail Run apartments and other nearby parcels. The Zionsville Redevelopment Commission will hold a public hearing and take a final vote at its Feb. 23 meeting.

Center helps those in crisis

A mother caring for a physically challenged husband and son, trying to make ends meet. A family wrought with the loss of a child in profile need of support and temporary housing. A child without school supplies and not enough to eat every day.

It’s Boone County residents like these that The Caring Center strives to help. In 2014 the facility assisted more than 15,500 people and provided food to nearly 12,000. Its mission to “stabilize families in crisis and move those caught in poverty towards self-sufficiency” is accomplished entirely with support from donations and volunteers.

The need for more donations and assistance has prompted the center’s board of directors to create their first major fundraiser. The Charity Gala – on Valentine’s Day at the Golf Club of Indiana – will feature music by the Impalas, a wine pull, a chocolate sale and a 50/50 raffle.

But what will help the Caring Center the most is the needs-based silent and live auction, which features items such as air conditioning units, furnaces, picnic tables for the outdoor classroom area and the opportunity to provide school supplies for a child.

“Everybody has a passion,” executive director Theresa Hanners said. “We’re providing [attendees] with information about all our programs so they can bid on what makes them excited – whatever their passion is.”

As executive director of The Caring Center for 24 years, Hanners has learned to be a good listener and problem solver and will do what it takes to help people get back on a good path.

“We show them how to fish,” said Hanners. “There is teaching in everything we do.”

The Caring Center operates as an umbrella over several services that include a thrift store, food pantry, transitional housing and instructional space to teach Boone County residents in crisis how to cook, handle a budget and take control of their lives.

Hanners is dedicated to reducing food insecurity and has made it a goal to eliminate childhood hunger in Boone County by 2020, where she says 2,500 children live in food-insecure homes.

Animals lost in barn fire – Firefighters from Zionsville and several nearby agencies teamed up to put out a barn fire in the 7100 block of East County Road 550 South on the morning of Jan. 31. They brought in tanker trucks and had the blaze under control within 15 minutes, but 18 sheep, six dogs and one llama perished in the barn. The fire did not spread to the nearby home or other buildings, and no human injuries were reported. The damage is estimated to be as high as $30,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Caring Center contains a garden where fresh fruits and vegetables are grown, and cooking classes teach families how to prepare fresh items, can and preserve them.

For Dawn Such, one of the creators and leaders of the Charity Gala, the goal is to make everyone aware of what The Caring Center does.

“They do a lot of great work, not only with the food pantry and clothing closet,” Such said. “There are a lot of educational services for residents in Boone County.”

Hanners’ focus is empowering people in Boone County and helping remove barriers in their lives.

“We meet people where they are and we help them write their future story,” she said

Car wrecks into duplex porch

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Police are investigating what caused the driver of a car to strike a light pole, travel along the sidewalk and come to a stop on the police front porch of a duplex on Feb. 4.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the 100 block of N. Main Street.

The driver of the vehicle and a resident of the duplex suffered minor injuries, said Zionsville Police Department Captain Robert Musgrave. Debris from the wreck also damaged the window of The Village Parfumerie nearby.

Penny and Jeff Edmunds were in nearby Robert Goodman Jewelers when they heard the noise from the light post being struck and dragged.

“It sounded like something pulling a trailer,” Penny Edmunds said.

They raced outside and initially didn’t see anything out of order.

“I looked up and down and there was nothing on the street,” Jeff Edmunds said. Then they

realized that the car was on a porch a few doors away.

According to the Edmunds’, the driver traveled between parked cars and the buildings along the sidewalk before hitting the porch of the duplex.

“An hour earlier and (the driver) would have hit us or anyone else who was walking there,” Jeff Edmunds said. “It’s lucky that someone wasn’t seriously hurt.”

Author shares stories of success

Hoosier author Dan Wakefield (of “Going All the Way” fame) is a good sport. He agreed to attend our book club meeting last neighbors month and discuss his book, “Returning a Spiritual Journey,” with us – the Ladies of the Club.

He was kind enough, foolish enough or just plain curious enough to accept my invitation to visit our club. The upside was that it was great to hear real stories from a successful author who’d had it all – or seemed to – and shared his personal life in a book and in person.

The downside was that the club met Jan. 7. If that date doesn’t ring a bell, go to your computer and check. The wind chill factor that night was 20 degrees below zero. And yours truly had to pick up Mr. Wakefield at his home.

I took him to the Savianos’ home in Raintree, as Carol was our hostess for the evening. She fed us little crocks of mac and cheese with meatball hors d’oeuvres, Dan fed us stories.

Stories of his friend Kurt Vonnegut, stories of Shortridge High School when it was one of the best in the country, stories of beating out Senator Richard Lugar to give the graduation speech.

He told us how he’d once had too much – too much alcohol, too much Hollywood, too much everything – and of finding grace.

I asked how writing this book had come about. He said he’d called the editor of New York

Faith key to 62 years of marriage

Most guys who attempted to kiss Virginia ended up looking at the back of her head. But that all changed one valentine’s day fateful day when Don Lassen wandered into her Baptist church. Immediately, Virginia knew there was something special about this young man, and they soon began dating.

“I didn’t want to be kissed, but I was waiting around for [Don] to get around to kissing me,” she said. “I knew this was different. This was right.”

Six dates later that first kiss finally happened, and two years after that they were married in Don and Virginia Lassen live in Zionsville Meadtheir home state of Michigan. “We can’t imagine life without each other,” said Virginia Lassen, 84.

Don, 88, felt just as strongly that something was different about Virginia shortly after meeting her.

“She was not like the other girls,” said Don, a World War II Navy veteran. “She was someone I could trust and be happy with.”

The couple has lived in Zionsville Meadows since last year and spent many decades in the town before that. 7-mile race benefits food pantry

Swirling sleet, near-freezing temperatures and snow-covered trails didn’t detour about 300 runners and walkers who fundraiser competed in the Groundhog 7 race on Feb. 1. Attendees brought donations to the Zionsville Food Pantry as their entry fee to participate in the 7-mile race organized by Indy Runners.

The route began and ended at Zionsville Community High School and ran along the Zionsville Rail Trail and through nearby neighborhoods.

“Race conditions were challenging and times were impacted by the slippery footing in the fresh snow,” said Don Keller, race director. “Many participants commented that they enjoyed the winter scenery of the Zionsville Rail Trail with a coat of fresh snow.”

Mike Cole finished first overall with a time of 41:52, and Rhiannon Johns was the top female finisher at 42:22. But the real winner of the day was the Zionsville Food Pantry, which received an estimated 900 pounds of food as well as some cash donations.

“By asking for a food donation as the race entry fee we’re able to share our good fortune with others in our community,” Keller said. “The generosity of runners never ceases to amaze me.”

Race organizers constantly monitored weather conditions beginning the night before the event, when snow began falling in the area.

Ultimately, they decided that the course was safe enough for the race to go on.

Despite the wintry weather, participation was down by only seven runners this year compared to 2014. Pre-registration was much higher this year, which marked the 43rd annual Groundhog race.

“I love putting on this race in Zionsville. It signals the start of the racing season,” Keller said.

“The tradition of holding it on Superbowl Sunday let us all burn some extra calories before the big game.”

Pawing through the coat closet the other day, I came across three gloves. Each was from a separate pair, and each was, Plain talk for some strange reason, for the left hand. Three left gloves.

I buy a new pair of winter gloves every couple years because I habitually lose them. Correction, I lose one of them, the one for the right hand.

That means the three I found in the closet are worthless.

I know better than to throw them away, however, because there is a law somewhere that says if you throw away one glove because you’ve lost the other, you will almost certainly find the other one a day later, usually on trash day five minutes after the truck has picked up your trash and chugged off down the street.

I’ve thought about this a lot, and wondered if there was something I could do to prevent glove loss in the future. When I was a little kid my mother fastened a string to each mitten and strung them through the sleeves of my coat. I never lost my mittens.

Okay for a kid, but I can’t imagine walking through the grocery store with my gloves flapping at the bottom of my sleeves. I couldn’t put them in my pockets either, since the string would pretty much pin my arms to my side. I’d have to ask people to put things in my cart.

“Excuse me sir, could you put that package of pork chops in my cart please?” And how would I pay the bill and unload the bags into my car? Or even drive?

Then there is the humiliation when someone would remark, “Hey, look at the big kid with his mittens on a string.” I’m rethinking that.

I suppose I could put zippers on all my coat pockets. That way my gloves would be zipped tight with little chance of loss.

A workable idea, to be sure, but, hey, I can’t even remember to zip up my jacket half the time.

No way would I remember my pockets.

Military officers don’t wear their gloves, they carry them in their left hand. This leaves the right hand free for saluting. Frankly, I never understood the reasoning behind having gloves that you never wore.

I did discover one thing. I always put my gloves in my right pocket. And I always lose my right glove.

So, starting tomorrow, I’m going to stuff my gloves into my left pocket. That way maybe I’ll start losing the left ones. That would leave right gloves to match up with those left ones in the closet.

Eagle student a chess champ

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville third grader Naitik Rambhia recently finished fifth in the Scholastic Chess of Indiana state championship out of achievement more than 300 students for the third grade and under division. Naitik competed in a field of 64 students who qualified for the finals, including his classmate, Allie Johnson, who finished 48th in the state.

Naitik and Allie attend Eagle Elementary where they participate in the school’s chess club and are part of the competing arm of the club’s team. This was Naitik’s third year competing and second time to reach the state finals, finishing 16th last year. It was Allie’s first year at the state level after competing for two years.

“I’m really proud of the work and effort Allie and Naitik put into the regionals and finals,” said Michael Johnson, chess club leader and Allie’s father.

“My goals for them for next year are the same ones we have for all our players at Eagle: keep practicing, keep improving and keep having fun.”

Johnson has been teaching chess at the school for four years. He is grateful for the support from the PTO and the school. He has seen that support in cafeteria banners cheering for the chess team, in the purchase of quality chess sets and the acquisition of time clocks that are necessary in competition.

“I like getting to meet new people and playing them,” he said.

When reflecting on her first state competition, Allie said, “Everything was fun, except the losing part.”

Naitik and Allie will be on one of the three Zionsville chess teams heading to the team regional competition in late February, but they feel that the individual tournament has already given them an edge.

“I feel like I’m better prepared to help my school team at regionals,” Allie said.

Scholastic Chess of Indiana is the sanctioning body of the US Chess Federation, running individual and team championships for the state.

During the individual tournament 1,528 games of chess were played in seven different sections, with $4,000 in scholarships awarded.

Proposed restrictions on chickens ruffles some feathers

Sunshine and Fluff Fluff have lived in the Zionsville family’s backyard since their original foster family decided to give them up when they were just months old. They roost in an old playhouse converted into a coop, and although they recently stopped laying eggs, the hens provide the family with plenty of companionship and laughs.

“They’re funny,” Ruffer said. “They’re definitely conversation starters.”

The Ruffers are among a growing number of families in Zionsville – and across the country – to embrace backyard chicken farming. Several chicken owners in Zionsville attended the Zionsville Town Council meeting last month to share their stories and opinions on proposed changes to a town ordinance that would limit the number of chickens to six, prohibit roosters and require that all animals be contained on its owner’s property in the town’s urban district. The current ordinance only mentions containing dogs. “[The proposal] is a common sense amendment to the ordinance that says any animal should be contained on your own property, whether cat, dog, chicken or pot-bellied pig,” Zionsville Town Manager Ed Mitro told the council.

The town looked at ordinances regulating chickens in nearby communities to help draft the proposed updates for Zionsville.

Carmel, for example, recently increased the number of chickens it allows in urban areas from three to six. The city of Indianapolis doesn’t place any specific limitations on raising chickens within its borders.

The issue came to the council’s attention after the town re-

ceived complaints from a resident stating that chickens owned by a neighbor frequently wandered across the property line and caused damage in the yard.

“This is not something we’re going to actively be policing throughout town,” councilor Tim Haak said. “It’s simply a tool we can utilize when neighbors can’t get along. It gives us a tool to

After six Zionsville chicken owners attended the Feb. 2 meeting to express concern about the proposed changes, the council decided to postpone a vote to allow time for further research.

A national trend While Zionsville is one of the most recent communities to discuss chicken regulations, municipalities across the country have been addressing the issue in recent years as the trend has grown.

Backyardchicken.com, a website that offers forums and information for chicken enthusiasts, has seen its online community grow from 50 members in 2007 to more than 300,000 in November 2014. Chicken owners from across the world add about 7,000 new posts to the site every day on topics ranging from flock health to building a coop to storing fresh eggs.

“There is a growing awareness of how fun and easy it is to raise backyard chickens,” said Rob Ludlow, owner of BackYardChickens.com, in an email. “People are quickly realizing that chickens are a multi-purpose pet: Chickens eat the bugs and weeds in your yard, generate fantastic fertilizer, and of course are a pet that makes you breakfast.”

Andi Simmons has been keeping hens in her urban Zionsville backyard for about two years for the same reason as many other new urban chicken owners: a steady supply of farm fresh eggs from a known, healthy environment. She has never heard a complaint from her neighbors about the chickens, but she can understand why the town council would consider providing some restrictions.

“Obviously with lot sizes being small in the village, any more than six [chickens] could be a problem,” she said. “If their bedding is left out I suppose it could be a smell hazard, although I’ve never had anyone tell me they’ve noticed that anywhere in the village.”

Simmons knows of several other chicken owners nearby, and some of them have even discussed arranging a coop tour to share ideas and introduce others to the growing trend.

The council is expected to discuss the proposed ordinance at its next meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. March 2 at Town Hall.

Just the Ticket created for you A bit more than a year ago, Current Publishing produced a glossy insert titled Tables. It was a dining guide encompassing much of Central Indiana. Critically and otherwise, it was a success. We received heavy compliments, and we were grateful for them. Our plan was to have a second edition about six months later. The more we talked to restaurateurs, the more we learned that they liked the annual version best. As time went by, another informal survey was taken, and they told us they wanted more frequency but at a lower price point. So, we went back to the drawing board, and we developed a successor to Tables. It is Just the Ticket, and the first edition of the special section, which we hope to provide quarterly, is included with today’s edition of Current. Take a look, please. You might recall that the content of all our editions is predicated on the results of independent marketplace research. The good folks at SMARI, Inc., did the study, and dining and entertainment clearly we No. 1 among the findings wrought from the statistically reliable sampling. In order to feed the need, if you will, Just the Ticket should prove, we hope, to be the appropriate answer. We focus on dining, certainly, but we’ve also included experiential offerings, for the research tells us, too, that ours is an active community. So, we urge you to read – and make use of – Just the Ticket and to patronize our advertisers, for without them the section would not exist. We also would appreciate you sharing with us any or all Central Indiana experiences you believe your fellow readers need to know about. Cultural omnivore

Growing up in rural Indiana in the last half of the last century meant that one’s entertainment options were severely limited. With less than a handful of reliable television signals, radio was dominant. Wolfman Jack led the irreverent charge late-night. Wasn’t the so-called Dr. Demento another? But the remaining airtime was dedicated to the Farm Report and the local call-in swap show, Trading Post. To be sure, there is high drama in negotiating to exchange a used dryer for a collection of gas station glasses while live. But by in large, we small town Hoosiers had to make our own fun.

Some sang or played instruments. One cousin, a would-be playwright, would force her brothers and me to perform her dramas to our parents. In hindsight, the only good thing about the “shows” is that no one ever bothered to record one. But we came of age eager to be entertained. When the county fair was in town, we’d all go. When the local team played, we were there to cheer.

When our cousin’s “band” was at the Odd Fellows, we’d sing along. When the drive-in movie would change every other week, we’d be first in line for the new flick.

In short, we became cultural omnivores. We learned to appreciate any work (from almost anyone) intended to entertain. Sure, some might say the standards were low; but, the objective was to taste a little of everything – sport, music, art – each got its turn. Perhaps it is because of the many choices, but we seem to be increasingly becoming specialists. A football fan refuses to see a drama. And, a symphony enthusiast misses the joy at Indy Eleven. Wouldn’t it be better if we pushed our boundaries? While it’s good to have favorites, a single food diet can’t be healthy.

Here’s my new favorite quote: “There is no greater plague to the introvert than the extroverted,” from author Pierce Brown. This so perfectly captures the essence of almost every marital tiff my husband Doo and I have experienced.

Take this past weekend. With my life force nearly drained from a fourteen-hour dance competition on the southeast side, I used the long car ride home to recharge. Darkness, a sleeping ten-year-old, and the smooth vocals of Peter Cetera softly playing in the background, had this introvert feeling fine by the time I arrived home. Then I walked through our door and was bombarded with bright lights, loud music, the distinct odor of garlic and a dining room table piled high with back-packs, an assortment of hair accessories and a plastic blue air cannon (because we simply cannot find a place to store that thing!). Unwilling and frankly, unable, to cope with the sudden change from my peaceful mini-van interior to this obnoxious sensory overload, I hastily retreated to my sanctuary, the master bedroom.

But when I flung open the door, I discovered Doo plus two kids sprawled out on the nowunmade bed watching “Transformers TwentyNine” at theater-level volume. And because the last vestiges of patience had deserted me after my daughter’s third (third!) awards’ ceremony of the day, I couldn’t keep my thoughts to myself. Luckily Doo was in a good mood, and didn’t take the bait. He knows a mommyon-the-edge when he sees one.

Under normal circumstances though, the confrontation would have spiraled into an argument over whose needs are greater. And it all comes down to the fact that we are classic examples of an introvert and an extrovert. I equate happiness to beach reading, dimmer switches and nine-to-eleven hours of sleep, while Doo finds rejuvenation in rave music, laser-light shows and constant interaction with as many people as possible. Our “vertisms” should have kept us apart, and yet I think it’s those very differences that keep us together.

So yes, when I’m trying to go to relax at night and Doo opens his laptop, turns on Archer, and begins reading The Economist with the help of every overhead light, I do feel like he’s unleashed my own personal evening apocalypse. Just as I’m sure my manic obsession with a vampire-like lifestyle grinds his gears. But it works for us. I ensure that our children get to bed on time and that we don’t blow the electricity bill, while Doo makes certain I nurture friendships and occasionally leave the house. He’s definitely my plague, but in a good way.

Winner slays photo caption contest Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Comedian Zach Galifianakis has never been able to do it. Nor has country singhumor er Brad Paisley. Stephen Colbert hasn’t ever been a winner. In fact, the chances of success are about 5,000 to one.

But Rachel Loveman of Indianapolis has taken the prize.

No, this wasn’t a drawing. Actually, it was a drawing – of a matador dancing with a bull in the arena. Rachel’s task: Write a funny caption for that New Yorker cartoon. What is the bull saying?

The weekly caption contest (which debuted in 1997) is now a regular feature of this iconic magazine whose single-panel cartoons have been making America laugh since 1925. Some of the captions have become part of our lexicon and no one knows that better than cartoon editor Robert Mankoff. His depiction of a businessman on the phone saying: “Thursday is no good. How about never? Does never work for you?” made it into the Yale Book of Quotations.

Which brings us back to Rachel. She and her husband, a physician in Indy, compete every week. Few people win after only a few tries, although Rachel scored the prize after only about a dozen attempts. She made a copy of the cartoon and carried it around, hoping for inspiration.

The word “Olé!” stuck in her mind but even a bull

saying Ole! isn’t funny. She knew that most New Yorker cartoon captions are familiar words and phrases placed in a different context or with a twist of the wording.

Rachel learned she was a finalist in an email from the magazine, and then had to deal with her excitement while assuring her envious husband that his caption, “We need a better agent,” was just as funny as hers (it wasn’t). The other two finalists had submitted: “What happened to your last partner?” and “Remember, at the dip, I gore you.”

The reward for her accomplishment was modest: a signed copy of the cartoon with Rachel’s entry beneath it. So what was that winning caption? Rachel explains that her final brainstorm was a spin on Renée Zellweger’s line in the movie Jerry Maguire, with Tom Cruise. After Cruise went on ad nauseam about his love for her, Zellweger says, “You had me at hello.”

And so, in Rachel’s caption, the bull says to the matador, as they hold each other in a dancing embrace: “You had me at Olé.”

Some tips for opening some bubbly with any budget

It’s a sound often associated with romance and celebration champagne corks popping and bubbly spilling into a glass. But for many, knowing what to buy for that special occasion - such as Valentine’s Day - can seem daunting. drinks “The best and most popular is Champagne and Prosecco from Italy which can range from $10-$500.

The key thing is to decide how sweet or dry you would like your sparkling wine to be and what you are using it for,” said BethAnn Kendall, wine and food manager for Vine & Table in Carmel. “If it’s for cocktailing you still want a good quality sparkling but not spend too much where as if it a special occasion you’ll want something a little more special.”

Champagne actually refers to the wine region in France - 90 miles northeast of Paris - that produces sparkling wine, according to Kendall.

Kendall “Only wine from this region can be called champagne - everywhere else is sparkling wine,” Kendall said.

When it comes to the budget conscious, Kendall said a top seller you can’t go wrong with is Maschio Prosecco Brut.

“It’s $12.99, dry and balanced, perfect for any occasion whether it’s toasting to celebration or mimosa’s in the morning,” she said.

“Naveran Cava Brut has amazing aromatics and is bursting with fruit at only $15.49.”

For those with a little more to spend, Kendall recommends Veuve Clicqout.

“The history of the winery dates back to 1772 and they have eight winemakers to ensure the taste and quality is the same every vintage so you always know what you are getting,” she said.

“Ayala Brut is a 150-year-old family owned and operated winery that is harder to find but outstanding champagne.”

If money is no option, however, Kendall said the best and the most expensive come from Champagne, France.

“They only make vintage champagne in good vintages so that really sets a standard on the quality of the grapes. It’s generally smaller production. Vintage champagnes are special because they are aged for a minimum of three years although a majority age it for 10 years prior to release,” she said. “Dom Perignon 2003 is our most popular vintage champagne. Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes D’Or 2002 is another great vintage champagne. This bottle is most often called the ‘golf ball bottle’ but the story is that Nicolas was Tip: Champagne should never explode. If it does, that most likely means it’s too warm and needs to be chilled for 2-3 hours.

“Champagne explodes when it’s too warm or shaken,” she said. “Although I think the sound of a cork popping does set the tone for a celebration.”

But with such endless choices, you’ll likely be happy no matter what bubbly you end up pouring in your glass. After all, as Dom Pierre Perignon said when he first tasted his creation - “Come quickly! I’m tasting stars!”

Freeze chicken for easy meal later Commentary by Ceci Martinez I asked my boys to describe their favorite dish: breaded chicken cutlets with caper and lemon sauce. Their reply was: “Awesome!” Set aside this weekend to prep and freeze these chicken cutlets for the busy weekdays.

Note: Chicken can be breaded three months in advance. Thaw before continuing.

BREADED CHICKEN CUTLETS WITH CAPER AND LEMON SAUCE Ingredients: 1 cup flour, 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning the chicken, 2 eggs, blended in a broad bowl that will accommodate the chicken, 1 1/2 to 2 cups panko, 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (halves), salt, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, about 1/3 cup vegetable oil.

Directions: Put the flour in a plastic bag and add the pepper; shake to distribute flour. Next to this, set the bowl of egg wash. Next to this, set a plate with 1 cup of panko. Put each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound until the meat is flat and uniform in thickness. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Spread the top of each breast with a couple teaspoons of Dijon, then sprinkle the thyme over each. Gently put two breasts in the bag of flour and flip the bag.

Remove and repeat with the remaining two breasts. Slip one flour breast into the egg wash and remove it when it is evenly coated. Press the breast into the panko, flip and press until it is uniformly coated. Pour oil into a sauté pan. Over medium-high, lay the breasts into the pan. Cook on each side till they’re golden brown and cooked through.

Legion of Blues returns for another season of live, local music

The Legion of Blues concert series picked up right where it left off last year with its first show of the season on Jan. 31. concerts Audience members of all ages filled the American Legion Post No. 79 to watch Brownsburg trio The Breakes and Indianapolis-based The Warrior Kings rock the stage.

Tim McLaughlin of Zionsville launched the concert series – originally known as Blues on the Bricks – in 2013 to bring quality live music to his hometown.

“I want folks to have a good time,” McLaughlin said. “These performances make for a night of great music near your home, without the drive to Indianapolis.”

Other concerts this year are planned to take place in April, July and October. McLaughlin is hoping to turn the July show into a major outdoor event “if all the pieces fall into place,” he said. Normally all shows take place at the American Legion in Zionsville and include a $5 cover charge.

Most musicians selected to perform at Legion of Blues are from central Indiana, although McLaughlin has been in touch with bands from as far away as Boston, Chicago and Duluth.

The S&P 500 finished with an 11.39 percent gain in 2014. Why didn’t I fare the stocks same? If your investments are lagging the broad benchmark, you may be asking that very question. The short answer is that the S&P is not the overall market (and vice versa).

Keep in mind that the S&P serves as a kind of “Wall Street shorthand.” The media watches it constantly because it can provide a good gauge of how things are going during a trading day, week or year. It is cap-weighted (larger firms account for a greater proportion of its value, smaller firms a smaller proportion) and includes companies from many sectors. Its 500-odd components represent roughly 70 percent of the aggregate value of the American stock markets.

Still, the S&P is not the whole stock market – just a portion of it.

You can say the same thing about the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which includes only 30 companies and isn’t cap-weighted like the S&P is. It stands for about 25 percent of U.S. stock market value, but it is devoted to the blue chips.

The Nasdaq is large (more than 3,000 members) and consists of insurance, industrial,

transportation and financial firms as well as tech companies. It is tech-heavy, however, and includes a number of speculative small-cap firms.

So on many days, its performance may not correspond to that of the broad market.

That also holds true for the Russell, which is a vast index but represents small caps. (It is actually a portion of the Russell 3000, which also contains large-cap firms.)

If you really want a broad view of the market, your search may lead you to the Wilshire 5000, which some investors call the “total market index.” Some say that the Wilshire is the real barometer of the U.S. market, as it is several times the size of the S&P 500 (it includes about 3,700 firms at the moment, encompassing just about every publicly-traded company based in this country. The Wilshire finished up about 9.54 percent for 2014.

Also remember: one benchmark doesn’t equal the entire market.

Springmill Pet Wellness Clinic opened Jan. 22 at 224 W. 161st St., a second location for the group following its first office at 71st Street and Binford Blvd. in Indianapolis. Dr. Steve Nichols, the primary veterinarian at the new location along with partner Dr. Mike Graves, chose Westfield for its burgeoning growth and proximity to his own home.

This month I’m excited to introduce you to the butterfly pose. The butterfly wasn’t always able to flutter gracefully from flower to flower.

It started its life as a tiny caterpillar, munching on leaves. With practice and focus, the butterfly built a cocoon and went inside for a long rest. It was quiet and still and patient. Finally, it emerged as the beautiful butterfly we see today.

Do you want to become a butterfly yourself?

Sit on the ground with the soles of your feet touching; knees out. Lift and lower your knees to flap them like wings. Make the butterfly even more realistic by using your fingers to make antenna above your ears. Flutter and fly. Breathe your way across the sky!

By becoming a butterfly, we can stretch our inner thighs, remember to sit up straight and tall, feel supported by the earth below us and keep our joints and tummy organs healthy and strong.

Mixing up ‘censure’ and ‘censor’ Commentary by Jordan Fischer

Hello, dear readers! It’s time for another round of “Mixed-Up Grammar,” starring word pairs that get misplaced, misused Grammar Guy and all-around abused in the English language.

Our contestants today: “Censure” and “censor.”

You know the word “censor.” As a verb it means to ban or otherwise suppress “unacceptable” parts of a book, movie, famous Italian statue – whatever someone finds offensive at the moment. As a noun, it’s the people who take all the fun away from network television.

“Censure” we don’t see as much. It means “to criticize strongly,” and most often pops up in political contexts. The most recent U.S. congressman to be censured was Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel in 2010 – putting him in the company of the likes of U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy and U.S. Rep. William D. Bynum, censured in 1890 for “unparliamentary language” (the only Hoosier delegate Congress has ever censured, as it were).

Interestingly, despite the serious political po-

larization our country has seen on occasion, only one U.S. president has ever been censured. Can you guess who? (If you guessed Calvin Coolidge you’re … not a very good guesser.)

Where these two words get confusing is that “censuring,” at least in the congressional context, does include some amount of censorship, as censured lawmakers temporarily lose their committee memberships and, thus, a lot of their access to the media. However, censorship is not part of the actual definition of “censure.”

A final note on “censorship:” If you’ve been prevented from publishing or saying something because another person found it objectionable – that’s censorship. If you’ve been criticized after the fact – that’s life.

Oh, and the only U.S. president ever censured?

By 1500, Portuguese seafarers had explored the western coast of Africa and sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to India, bringing new ideas and images back to Europe.

Travel The iconic “Tower of Belém,” near where the explorers departed, reflects this unprecedented “Age of Discovery.”

The “Tower of Belém was begun in 1513 when Portugal’s King Manuel I ordered a fortress built on a small island in the Tagus River to defend Lisbon’s busy port. The king also wanted to salute the Order of Christ, successor to the banned Knights Templar, which had financed many voyages of the Portuguese explorers, including those of members Vasco de Gama and Bartholomeu Dias. The limestone fortress, completed in 1519, comprises a hexagonal bastion facing the river, with openings for cannons on five sides, and an adjoining tower, with a chapel and a room for the king.

The two-part structure, officially named the “Tower of St. Vincent” after the patron saint of Lisbon, combined images collected by Portuguese explorers from around the world. The silhouette of the four-story tower section evoked temples of eastern India. The twelve melondomed turrets for small arms and a loggia with seven arches supported on columns drew on Moorish designs. Representations of exotic animals, including what is said to be first rhinoceros

seen in Europe, were carved below the turrets.

Crosses of the Order of Christ and pyramidcapped designs copied from Moroccan city walls served as merlons. Nautical rope, manifested in stone, bounded the bastion and tower.

The bastion employed more than thick walls for protection. A large statue of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus faced the river from above the cannon openings, seeking to dissuade enemy ships from firing toward the bastion. The strategy failed. In 1580, Spanish forces under the Duke of Abla captured the fortress and used it to house Portuguese prisoners.

The eclectic style of the Tower of Belém became known as “Manueline,” after King Manuel I, and is considered a transition between Late Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The fortress itself is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed structures in Portugal.

Four flooring ideas to better the bathroom

For most people, the bathroom is where the day usually begins and ends. And one major element that plays a role in creating a comfortable, luxurious environment is the indoors flooring. Flooring is such a key part of any design scheme because of the sheer amount of space it takes up.

Additionally, choosing the right bathroom flooring material also requires an eye for practicality because of the amount of moisture, heat and wear that will inevitably occur.

Ceramic – Tile is currently the most popular of all bathroom-flooring selections for a number of reasons. It’s easy to clean, fairly resistant to harboring germs and durable enough to uphold against heat or water contact. The most popular types of tiles are ceramic and porcelain or stone.

Ceramic tiles are created from clay that is fired at high temperatures to create a hard, water resistant surface. These tiles are available in numerous designs, and are extremely durable (although they can possibly crack or break if they are not installed properly). Instead of being fired, porcelain tiles are made from pressed clay, which means they are more durable and water resistant. Porcelain tiles can be found in numerous styles and colors, and often at a very reasonable price range. If you are going for a classic or rustic look, stone tiles can add a natural beauty to the space. And of course, stone is so

Heated floors – Tile flooring is easy to maintain, visually eye-catching and available in countless design options. But because of its physical properties, tile can often feel cold underneath your feet. That’s why radiant (or heated) flooring can be an excellent addition to your bathroomflooring plan. Flooring can either be heated using an electrical, or a water circulation system to warm the floor from underneath. Heated flooring is not a cheap option, but can add luxury to your bathroom (especially during these cold, winter months).

Kid-friendly options – Kids have a knack for making watery messes in the bathroom. So you’ll probably want to select bathroom flooring that’s equipped to handle spills. Sheet vinyl tiles are water resistant, but can be slick when wet. Look for a design that features an anti-slip texture if you are concerned about safety. You could also go with ceramic or laminate tiles, but be sure to choose a waterproof caulk to seal the flooring.
