Open houses scheduled to gather feedback on town hall project

By Ann Marie Shambaugh annmarie@youarecurrent.com In an effort to gather additional public feedback on a new town hall, the Zionsville Town Council declined to vote on a council financing plan and instead announced two open house meetings set for residents to speak with officials about the project.

Mayor Tim Haak presented plans for the open houses after a three-hour meeting Feb. 1 spent mostly hearing public comments against the financing plan for the $10.2 million proposed town hall project and debate from councilors.

The open house sessions are set from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 17 and 23 at Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St. Haak, a representative from CSO Architects and other officials are expected to be on hand to answer questions and address concerns from residents.

“I felt it was important to have the opportunity for people (who work) to come in after hours if they have different questions,” Haak said, adding that residents are welcome to stop by Town Hall during regular business hours to ask questions as well.

During the council meeting, Zionsville residents expressed concerns about the project that ranged from worries that the town wouldn’t have enough funds to address other issues around town if they committed to financing the town hall to allegations that project discussions were done without opportunity for public input.

Others said they didn’t think the size or design of the 41,300-square-foot building was right for

Zionsville.

“The building looks like something Carmel would build. It doesn’t fit into the Zionsville village aesthetics,” Zionsville resident Lori House said. “It appears to me ego has gotten the best of this town, and that is not always a good thing. Bigger is not always better.”

Several councilors had questions about the project, but Tom Schuler expressed the most concerns. He said that during his time on council the budget has always been tight, and he is skeptical that the town will suddenly have enough extra funds to pay for the project.

“We’ve spent the last four years grinding nickels and dimes out of the budget here just to make ends meet,” he said. “We’ve started the project backwards from how any of us would buy a house.”

The proposed financing plan calls for using an installment purchase contract, which works much like a mortgage, to pay for building a new town hall behind the current one. Zionsville would make biannual payments on the project over 25 years.

The proposed plan has an interest rate of 2.75 percent that could be recalculated in 10 years.

Although the council did not vote on the financing plan, it did approve a resolution establishing the Whitestown 334/700 East Development Area. However, councilors removed part of the resolution that would have allowed TIF revenues from this area to help pay for the town hall project.

The current town hall is in an aging former church building that would likely cost more than $3 million to renovate without providing room to expand.

“A lot of the development happened with administrative settings, ‘under the hood’ so to speak,” said Mary Reuff, assistant director of the library. “While this should make things better for our customers, it should appear to be a seamless, invisible improvement.”

Library customers should notice faster transactions and see a few obvious changes, such as a message center for the library to communicate with customers, the ability to sort check out and hold history and the addition of e-books in Evergreen.

A direct link for OverDrive e-book and downloadable audiobook collections has been added so that customers can more easily borrow these versions of books.

Previously customers had to leave the Hussey-Mayfield website to visit OverDrive through a separate link.

Through the account summary section, it will be more obvious to card holders to see when their library card is due for renewal. A check out and hold history option have been available for several years through a selection in account preferences, but customers can now sort these materials.

“It really helps with customers who are reading a series or like a particular author,” said Virginia Hilbert, circulation services department head.

“We are glad that the catalog will be faster overall and, ultimately, more accurate for our customers,” Reuff said.

Many other changes were made to the system that will help the librarians do their job more efficiently.

“We want it to be easier on our side so we can provide better service,” Hilbert said.

Evergreen Indiana is a consortium of 107 libraries across the state allowing cardholders to borrow materials from other member libraries. Hussey-Mayfield was the first library in the state to join in 2008. Libraries in Carmel, Lebanon and Thorntown are also part of the consortium.

Drawing to award 5 Boone REMC $500 scholarships

Boone REMC will give away five $500 scholarships for students attending a post-secondary institution full-time for the 2016-17 school year. The winners will be chosen during a random drawing at the education annual meeting March 12. Students have three options for filling out the application and turning it in.

“The applications have been sent to local schools, and they’re on our website. They can download it, fill it out and email it to me by February 26. They can print it off, fill it out and bring it with them when they come to the annual meetSaucerman ing. The third option is to come and fill it out in person at the meeting,” said Mandy Saucerman, Boone REMC communications and marketing specialist.

Students must live in a household that receives electricity through Boone REMC, and one member of the household must be present at the meeting to win. The meeting opens at 8:15 a.m. in the Witham Pavilion at the Boone Co. 4-H Fairgrounds, 1300 E. 100 S., Lebanon. A free breakfast, including biscuits and gravy and eggs, will be served.

“We’ll have different booths set up about different programs that we offer – rebates, energy efficiency programs, youth programs,” Saucerman said.

Students make elite jazz band

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Middle School was well-represented in the Junior All-State Jazz Band.

Three ZMS eighth-graders, music Wesley Turnbull (trumpet), Ethan Perry (trombone) and Cody Bevelhimer (electric string bass), took part in the 20-member band. No other middle school had more than one representative. This was the first year for the Junior All-Star Band, which was chosen by a blind audition by a selection committee, All-State Band coordinator Bethany Robinson said.

“We’re really excited they were given the opportunity. It’s very special,” ZMS band director Josh Weirich said.

They performed at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne at the Indiana Music Educators Association Conference.

“I really enjoyed it because I could meet new people that were like a skill level we were,” Turnbull said.

Perry said the experience motivated him to keep improving.

“The director was great,” Perry said. “The people there were great, and it was an overall good experience, and I felt I got better playing jazz music overall.”

Bevelhimer has been playing electric string bass for four years.

He enjoyed the challenge.

“At my school, the bass players are all good, but it takes some work to get in advanced jazz band,” he said. “When I got (to all-state rehearsals), there was another bass player who was better than me. It kind of shocked me. That makes me even want to get better.”

There were two Zionsville Community High School students, Joshua Neumann (trombone) and Scott Kelley (tenor sax) on the All-State Jazz Band with all high school musicians.

Forgive me if I quoin a phrase Commentary by Ward Degler If my wife and I didn’t play Words With Friends, I probably would not have been able to work the word “quoin” into a conversation.

I have to admit quoin plain talk doesn’t even look like a word. At least not one that normal people would keep in reserve for crossword puzzles and Scrabble.

The first time I played the word my wife rolled her eyes. She does that a lot, especially when I come up with dusty, antique words like quoin. A couple other eye-rollers are fid and wen.

Quoin started out as an architectural word describing the oversized wedge-shaped stone blocks worked into the corner of a stone building. Originally they were used to add strength to the building, Later they morphed into decoration.

That was back in the day when folks were racing around Europe building monasteries and cathedrals. Iffy building materials often needed something to hold them together.

Enter quoins.

Then came Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-1500s with his printing press. A flat page of type consisted of thousands of individual letters formed into lines, sentences and para-

graphs. Like the buildings made of soft stone, they needed something to hold them together.

Enter quoins.

The original quoins used in printing were wooden wedges. Once a page of type was finished, the guy who just spent hours painstakingly putting the page together would slip a wedge against the top of the page, and another at the side. Then he would tap them tight with a mallet. Thus snug and secure, the page was ready for the press. The printing process was called letterpress.

For some reason, once Gutenberg showed the world how to do it, the printing industry saw no reason to change it for nearly 500 years. Flatbed presses and movable type remained the ink-on-paper norm until the mid1950s, when offset printing first emerged.

Printers don’t use quoins any more. But the word is still very good indeed, especially for Words With Friends. By the way, a fid is a type of marlinspike found on old sailing ships. And a wen is a sebaceous cyst.

Brackets for Good uses NCAA tournament-style challenge to give nonprofits a boost

Tournament, pep rally set

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Butler University’s improbable run to a second consecutive NCAA national men’s basketball championship game in 2011 triggered the emergence of Brackets cover story for Good, an online tool that helps nonprofits compete for fundraising dollars.

“We were watching the city of Indianapolis bleed blue and white for Butler Bulldogs,” said Matt McIntyre, a Zionsville resident. “It was cool that it was Butler, because I was an alum, but the story was around the city all being a Butler fan, rooting for the underdog.”

So McIntyre and co-worker Matt Duncan, a Fishers resident, began talking about conducting an NCAA tournament basketball pool in 2012 and donating the money to charity.

McIntyre and Duncan then worked together at MOBI Wireless Management.

So McIntyre and Duncan tried to think of the charities they knew well, and it was a short list.

“The problem was, as a young professional, as your values and income mature, how do you know how to participate in philanthropy?”

McIntyre said. “How do you quickly align your personal values with that of an organization in a low-bearing way – not giving up a Saturday, not buying a table at a gala or buying your 15th T-shirt. That’s the problem we set out to solve.”

Their brainchild became Brackets for Good, and they quickly engaged the help of Indianapolis resident Dave Cornelius, another thenMOBI employee who had started Challonge. com, an online bracket tool.

“So we needed to pick his brain and see if he would jump in with us,” Duncan said. “We got in the car for lunch and the door locks hadn’t clicked, and we started throwing all these ideas at him. I was driving and Matt McIntyre was sitting in the front passenger seat.

I’m watching Dave in the rear-view mirror, and it’s like he’s watching a tennis match of us going back and forth. Finally, we said, ‘Maybe we should sit down and have some lunch and then re-start the conversation.’”

Turns out, Cornelius wasn’t turned off by the rapid-fire sharing of ideas.

this,” Cornelius said. “I was excited it was a charitable give-back idea. I felt I didn’t have a lot of that in my life, especially anything that really uses my talent, not just manual labor.”

So Cornelius agreed to become the third co-founder.

They talked for the next several weeks before they settled on the format for their competitive fundraising tournament.

“It’s pitting nonprofits against each other week by week, round by round, head to head to out-fundraise each other,” McIntyre said.

This year the tournament runs from Feb. 26 to April 1, with each round lasting one week.

The nonprofits of similar size compete in four divisions, First Person, Bingham Greenbaum Doll, Citimark and MOBI, before the teams advance to the Philanthropic Final Four.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County was the 2015 winner, raising $143,000.

Through the years, Brackets for Good has raised $1.3 million for charities.

The Indianapolis pep rally is set for Feb. 18, which happens to be McIntyre’s 32nd birthday.

“We unveil there who the nonprofits will be competing against,” Duncan said. “So they know they got into the tournament at this point, but they don’t know who they are competing against. All 64 organizations will send a representative and sometimes a board member to attend the events.

“Besides revealing who they compete against, we review the technology, share what’s new and go through the tools of what each organization has to be successful. We’re always adding new features into the software to make it easier for the nonprofits to participate.”

The three all volunteered their time for the first few years before McIntyre became executive director in March 2015. Cornelius still works for Challonge while Duncan remains at MOBI. McIntyre, who works out of zWorks, a co-working space, in Zionsville, said the champion not only gets the money and donor information it picked up along the way, but it also gets the grand prize grant of $10,000 from Valeo Financial Advisors.

This is the fifth year Indianapolis has held Brackets for Good. In 2015, Brackets for Good added a Louisville tournament. This year it has expanded in Ann Arbor, Mich., St. Louis and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

“We had to sort of beg eight nonprofits to be in the tournament the first year,” Duncan said.

It went from eight to 16 nonprofits in 2013 to a full 64 teams in its third year.

“We learned nonprofits are struggling for help to help them fundraise online,” McIntyre said. “I can’t confirm this, but I love to say we’re the only nonprofit that exists to help other nonprofits fundraise online.”

U.S. 31 a boon to our region It seems like it was ages ago, when the project to convert the former Meridian Street into a freeway now known as U.S. 31 got under way in 2011. As was the case with the making of Keystone Parkway, we all lived with varying shares of delays, dust and dirt and shortcuts, but now that it’s all but complete, who really remembers it? As we wrote back when Keystone was in the thick of being converted, no one would think much of the inconveniences long term, because the pleasure was and is worth whatever pain was associated with the project. And thus shall be the fading memory of all that U.S. 31 entailed for motorists. We never imagined the day when we could travel in six minutes from 146th Street to I-465, but that’s reality, and we rather enjoy it. And speaking of the interstate, the flyovers are nothing short of incredible. Everything has flowed effortlessly for us, and we imagine it’s the same for you.

There are some finishing touches to be applied, but, oh, what a difference the new thoroughfare makes. Well done!

This could be a rumble Commentary by John L. Micek It’s so on.

Instead of a coronation, Democrat Hillary Clinton, the ultimate political insider, left Iowa last week in the middle of an honestto-goodness campaign against a septuagenarian, self-described Democratic Socialist who’d promised his supporters a political revolution.

For Republicans, Donald Trump, the bloviating former reality TV star who boasted that voters would get so sick of winning with him that they’d beg for the occasional loss, found himself awkwardly trying to be gracious in defeat to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who speaks in the cadences of the pulpit and dresses in the suits of a mortician.

A defining Iowa win was considered critical for Clinton, who trails Sanders by an average of 18 points in New Hampshire, based on data compiled by RealClear Politics. The

Granite State holds its primary today. In 2008, Clinton lost Iowa, and the race, to another charismatic outsider — Barack Obama.

The Clinton camp tried to characterize Sanders’ strong Iowa showing as a one-off. But Sanders’ win highlights ongoing problems for Clinton, who’s faced questions about her honesty and trustworthiness over an email scandal that simply will not go away.

With just five percentage points separating them, Trump, Cruz and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida provided Republicans with an unexpected three-way race for the GOP crown heading into today’s vote.

When does parenting get easy? I thought that once my kids grew out of the croup-prone, communicationhumor challenged phase, I’d be set.

Then I was certain that when my oldest could babysit my youngest, life would begin anew. Now that I have a teenage driver, I should be golden, right? But parenting only seems to be getting harder.

The reasons for my current maternal ulcer are one sick daughter and one underachieving son. Together they have pushed, nay, shoved my mommy patience to the brink. Two totally different parenting dilemmas thrust upon me as I also try manage a job, house, a husband and various other everyday minutia.

First up, my tiny dancer. Eleven days ago she began complaining of a headache, and while I first chalked it up to lack of sleep, by the fourth day of constant pain, I began trolling the internet for brain tumor symptoms. Everything checked out fine at the pediatrician; the doctor simply advised to up the OTC ibuprofen. But after a sixth day and multiple SOS text messages from her, I had to work some logistical magic over my lunch break to get an unauthorized neighbor to break her out of school.

The headache was getting worse, and had us both in tears that evening. It seemed I could do nothing to help my baby. Finally, on office visit number two, the doc found fluid in her ears and swollen glands. Thank Jesus! I can handle a sinus infection! We’re now on antibiotics and the headache has all but disappeared.

In the middle of this “What if my kid has cancer?” week, my husband Doo casually glanced at our 17-year-old’s grades, and completely lost his shtick. We ended up in a fight about the best way to encourage our son to work to his potential, and completely forgot to even ground the ne’erdo-well. How do we motivate a kid who is quite happy with “doing okay?” Should we step back or get in his face? I don’t know, and it’s driving me nuts.

So I ask again, “When does parenting get easy?” Peace out.

A whole lot of trouble Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My wife says I’m not a spiritual person, but shopping at Whole Foods is really a big step in that direction for me. humor I don’t like buying eggs and milk in the same place that sells snow boots, an unassembled chest of drawers and treadmills, like Super Target or Meijer. Those stores are Half Foods.

At Whole Foods, almost everything on the shelves is edible, except stuff that is fat-free, gluten-free or sugar-free … which, come to think of it, is almost everything.

Last week, I bought a bar of soap, wrapped in clear shrink-wrap. When I got out of the shower the next morning, I told Mary Ellen I didn’t think it lathered very well. “Is it because it’s organic?” I asked.

“No, it’s because you just washed yourself with a wedge of cheese.”

Mary Ellen’s shopping list is a model for anyone who wants to eat healthy: almond milk, kale and low fat granola. If I shop on my own at a regular supermarket, I smuggle in white bread, hard salami and doughnuts.

When we shop together, I’m on a very short

leash and the chances of getting any treats are zero – even if I beg. I wish my wife would treat me more like a dog. I deserve it.

Magazines at Whole Foods always have the words Yogurt or Yoga or Yogi on the cover.

One was called “The Road to Renewal.” I expected it to contain approaches to reaching nirvana, but instead there’s a check-list for what to take on your next journey. There was no mention of a positive attitude, or a degree of self-reflection or introspection. Instead, the top three items were underwear, white socks and sandals – important things to take on one of the several dozen mind/body retreats they offer around the world, and at a very lofty price, too.

So I guess you can be a new-age, WholeFoods-shopping, transcendental-meditating Buddha fan, and still believe in making a buck.

That’s the spirit!

I wish my wife would treat me more like a dog. I deserve it.

THE MOST ROMANTIC MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

Scavenger Hunt ends with proposal by Gail and Jay Blackburn of Carmel My now husband’s name is Jay Blackburn. We live in Carmel, have two beautiful girls, Grace (13) and Rachel (9). We have been married 16 years.

In July 1998, I was offered the opportunity to go to Europe and live for three months and work. Little did I know when I got this offer, my then-boyfriend, was planning out an elaborate proposal for me that was due to take place the very next weekend after I was offered the job opportunity. Of course, I was to go on my European job assignment in three weeks.

So it was also around our “dating anniversary,” so he just told me he had a surprise for me, and I wasn’t to put anything on the calendar for Saturday, July 11th. That morning he sent me off on a scavenger hunt.

First stop was a trip to the spa (which I love). I got three treatments and a light lunch at Phillipe’s Spa in Indy. At that end of it, one of the people working in there came into the dressing room and gave me a card (from Jay) that gave me my next destination. I was to go “Parisian” (now no longer at the mall) since I was about to embark on a European adventure.

I was to pick out my favorite perfume (with the gift card in the card) and ask for a certain person behind the perfume counter that would help me with my next destination.

I got another card (from Jay) that advised me to go to “The Gap” and pick something out (with gift card again) that I would enjoy while we would have a “gap” between us as we lived in two different countries (I purchased a pair of pants). To read the full story, visit youarecurrent.com.

Life’s like a box of chocolates

My husband, Armando, proposed to me on February 17, 2008.

Since we’d only been dating about a year and Valentine’s Day had just passed, it came as a complete surprise.

Armando had recently purchased a new home, and we had invited my parents and younger siblings over for dinner and to see the new place. After dinner, as we were chatting in the living room, Armando disappeared into the bedroom. He was gone long enough that I was beginning to wonder what he was up to, when he emerged with a box of Ghirardelli chocolates. He handed them to me and asked me to pick one. I am not a huge fan of chocolate, so I declined and handed them to my sister to pass around the group. As the box of chocolates made its way around the room, Armando insisted that I try one. I agreed and when the box was in my lap, I started to select one. He stopped me, telling me there was a special one he wanted me to try. Nestled among the chocolates, he had wrapped a beautiful ring in a Hershey’s Kiss wrapper. In front of my family, Armando asked me spend the rest of our lives together and I happily agreed.

Eight wonderful years later, it’s the best chocolate I’ve ever received.

The package deal by Mary Pierce of Noblesville My story is not a traditional engagement, because as my oldest son told my future husband, “She is a package deal.” (My boys were ages 9 and 14.) My future husband, John, had never been married nor had any children. That was December 2002.

Fast forward to March 2008, John told me to pack an overnight bag with clothes suitable for dinner. He had a surprise date planned. I did not know that he had already asked my father for permission to ask me to get married. We had discussed getting engaged, but I had no idea when it would happen.

So, on March 20, 2008, I packed my bag and off we went. I had no idea of our destination and no hints. We arrived at The Canterbury Hotel where John made reservations for the presidential suite, which was incredible.

We entered the presidential suite and there was an enormous beautiful floral arrange-

ment. I turned to John and said, “Wow, they take care of everything.” At that point John said, “I took care of that. They are yours. I took care of this as well.” He took out a small box, got down on one knee, and asked, “Would you be my wife?”

Of course, I said, “yes.” After I said yes, John said that you have two hours to call everyone and then we have reservations at St. Elmo’s and tickets for the Bruce Springsteen concert. Following a wonderful dinner, we went to the concert where everyone congratulated us. John planned and surprised me with the most wonderful, magical engagement.

We were married June 8, 2010. Both of our sons gave wonderful toasts. Everyday, I am thankful for a wonderful man who married a “package deal” and became the best husband and father a woman could ask for.

Circle City Sound has been delivering love songs for Valentine’s Day for more than 20 years. gifts Several barbershop quartets, wearing tuxes, from within Circle City Sound, travel all over the Indianapolis area to perform Singing Valentines.

“One time we sang to a fellow, whose wife bought the Valentine for him, while he was in the dentist’s chair,” said Circle City Sound member Jack Shaffer, a Carmel resident. “We’re singing to him while the dentist is cleaning his teeth.”

Shaffer said it is usually a two-day event when the quartets schedule these Singing Valentines, but with Valentine’s Day falling on Sunday this year, they will have quartets out for three days, Feb. 12-14.

Shaffer said each quartet will do 10 to 18 each day, depending how far apart the visits are that day. He anticipates they will perform 100 Singing Valentines.

Shaffer said they perform “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” or “Heart of My Heart.” They deliver a personalized Valentine’s Day card from the person who ordered it and a silk rose. The quartet also poses for a picture

My younger son is treating our family to a decadent breakfast for Valentine’s Day this weekend, almond French toast. This fabulous recipe is a fusion of two signature breakfast/ brunch classics, almond croissant and French toast and couldn’t be any easier to make.

Almonds! Their fragrance goes with chocolate and strawberries, and spells romance! Kids will have a blast making this recipe and will glow with pride when they present you with their creation!

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 large eggs, 2 large egg yolks, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 1/4 cups half-and-half, 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon pure almond extract, Pinch of salt, 4 fresh butter croissants, 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, 1/4 cup sliced almonds, Maple syrup or honey, Confectioner’s sugar (optional), Choice of fruit.

Directions: Preheat oven to 250F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a glass bowl, whisk together the eggs, yolks and granulated sugar until smooth. Add half-and-half, vanilla, almond

extract, and salt. Cut croissants in half lengthwise, leaving them attached on side, and open them up. In a non-stick pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil together with 1 tablespoon of butter. Moist croissants by dipping them in the egg batter and transfer them to the pan; brown lightly on both sides at medium-low heat, place them in the oven to keep warm.

In a small pan, mix syrup or honey, 2 tablespoons of butter, almonds and almond extract. Heat for 5 minutes while mixing with a spoon. Remove croissants from oven and spread syrupalmond mix evenly; return to oven for 5 minutes. Serve warm accompanied by your choice of fruit.

Mardi Gras Gala set for Feb. 20

Susan Bonanno, president of ATI Guild, said they came up with the theme of a Mardi Gras party last year when they decided to do something more fun than just dressing up for a formal gala.

“The year before, my husband and I had been in New Orleans during Mardi Gras,” Bonanno said. “We were in the parade and threw beads.”

Bonanno said it’s a very casual event.

“You can wear jeans or fun shirts,” Bonanno said. “People come dressed with masks.”

The ATI Guild members decorate the room with a Mardi Gras theme. There will be complimentary Hurricanes and hors d’oeuvres for the first hour, followed by a sit-down dinner and dancing. The Tim Brickley Quintet will provide the music. The ATI founders, Don Farrell, Judy Fitzgerald and Cynthia Collins, will sing at least one song, perhaps more, Bonanno said.

There will be a wine pull, beer raffle, games and a silent auction. All proceeds from the

Who can resist a simple but incredible delicious chocolate treat? Chocolate pudding with strawberries is the perfect gift from your kitchen to your loved ones this Valentine’s Day! I cannot remember who said, “Sometimes the best dishes are the simplest,” but it is certainly true with this.

Note: Did you know that the word “chocolate” comes from the Aztec word “xocoatl,” the bitter drink made from cacao by the Aztecs and Mayans?

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons

cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 cups whole milk, 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1 pint strawberries Direction: In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch and salt. Add milk, whisking to combine, set pan over medium heat. Bring to boil, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, and cook until pudding thickens, 2 to 3 minutes. Turn off the heat, stir butter and vanilla.

Ladle pudding into four small bowls and let cool. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Co-owners Wendi Louks and Amy Talbott opened their flower shop, new biz Blooms, Feb. 8.

The store is filled with fresh flowers, some succulents, Donaldson’s Finer Chocolates, plus gift items for babies, weddings and showers. In the future, they hope to host showers or flower-arranging classes on the second floor of the shop.

“We were looking for something new,” Talbott said. “We saw a need.”

“The need was a big part of it,” Louks said.

“When I go out and about, what in the world do I go out and try to find and cannot find.”

They’d been thinking of opening a flower shop for a year or two, and when the spot opened up, they decided to move forward.

“We really like being here in the thick of Brick Street,” Louks said.

While the two are learning flower arranging, professionals will handle the bigger arrangements.

“We have a couple of floral designers that are very talented,” Louks said.

“But yet price savvy,” she added. They’ll offer boutonnieres and corsages, plus simple bouquets to grab for the dinner table.
