Trump’s pick for Navy secretary has Zionsville ties

The next Secretary of the Navy could be a Zionsville High School graduate.

President Donald Trump anpolitics nounced Jan. 25 that he plans to nominate Philip Bilden as the 76th Secretary of the Navy. Bilden graduated from ZHS in 1982.

Bilden is a businessman, former military intelligence officer and Naval War College cybersecurity leader.

Bilden He has served on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Naval War College Foundation.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to serve as Secretary of the Navy,” Bilden stated in a press release. “Maintaining the strength, readiness, and capabilities of our maritime force is critical to our national security. If confirmed, I will ensure that our Sailors and Marines have the resources they need to defend our interests around the globe and support our allies with commitment and capability.”

The Bilden family has strong military ties, with four consecutive generations serving as Army or Navy officers. His two sons are currently serving in the Navy.

Bilden served 10 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, from 1986 to 1996.

He recently retired as a co-founding member and senior advisor of HarbourVest Partners, LLC, a global private equity investment management firm.

Dispatches Interchange upgrades — Construction will begin this spring to add lanes to the I-465 and Michigan Road interchange in north Indianapolis. The project seeks to increase capacity and improve traffic flow by lengthening the existing northbound Michigan Road rightturn lane to eastbound I-465, adding a second leftturn lane on southbound U.S. 421 to eastbound I-465 and adding a third left-turn lane on the eastbound I-465 exit ramp to northbound U.S. 421. Construction is expected to be complete by November.

After an extended negotiation, the Town of Zionsville has secured the last piece of property to make possible walking and trails biking between Zionsville West Middle School and the Royal Run subdivision.

“We have a verbal agreement to terms with the last private property owner,” said Lance Lantz, Zionsville superintendent of street and stormwater services.

The property is just south of Zionsville Fire Dept. Station 93. The town had already secured the right of way for the southern portion of the pathway along County Road 700 and 650.

The town plans to purchase the entire residential property for the north portion of more than two acres to complete the pathway. The

future of the property is unknown.

Engineering will be completed in the near future.

“As soon as the weather breaks we hope to have this under contract,” Lantz said.

The path will be 10 feet wide, which is wider than other pedestrian trails in Zionsville.

“It’s what we’re requiring of new development,” Lantz said. “It’s the evolution of expectations for pathway dimensions.”

Lantz said that 10 feet is the minimum width required to receive federal funding, although the town will not seek such funding for this project.

The project will likely be completed during the summer, Lantz said. A gap will exist at the northeast corner of Whitestown Parkway and Royal Run Boulevard until the approved gas station is completed. Those business owners will be responsible for that portion of the path.

Republicans mull gas tax hike

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Four Republican state lawmakers explained why they are in favor of increasing the state gas tax at a town transportation hall-style meeting Jan. 26 in Carmel.

State senators Luke Kenley and John Ruckelshaus and state representatives Donna Schaibley and Jerry Torr gathered at the Carmel headquarters of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative advocacy group known for opposing tax increases, to answer questions and share why they believe a tax hike is necessary.

State representatives have proposed House Bill 1002, which would increase the gas tax by 10 cents per gallon and cap additional annual increases at 1 cent per gallon.

“We have not had an increase in the gas tax since 2003, which means we’ve actually had a decrease every single year since then in terms of its purchasing power,” Kenley said.

The state gas tax is currently 18 cents per gallon. Without action, Indiana will have a $1 billion annual road funding deficit over the next 20 years, according to Kenley and Ruckelshaus.

Kenley, a 25-year Senate veteran, said he ran for re-election in 2016 in part because he believes finding a solution for long-term road funding is “so important.”

AFP opposes an increase in the gas tax. It advocates instead for all current gas tax revenues to be spent on roads and bridges, freezing state spending and using a projected $1 billion tax revenue increase to pay for road repairs.

“The feel around the state is if we know that this revenue is going to roads, then we would be willing to pay a little bit more,” AFP State Director Justin Stevens said. “That’s the sentiment I’m getting, but that’s not currently

what’s happening.”

Kenley said he’s hesitant to commit all gas taxes to road and bridge repairs because the state would have to find ways to pay for other needs currently funded in part through the gas tax, and that would likely lead to another tax increase down the road. Torr agreed.

“If you do decide you’re going to dedicate 100 percent of that sales tax on gasoline to roads, that’s fine, except somewhere you’ve got to make it up,” Torr said. “It’s really easy to say that we can cut spending, but we have a very lean budget in Indiana.”

Schaibley said increasing the gas tax to fund road improvements makes sense because it’s a user fee.

“I firmly believe the people who are using the roads should be paying for them,” she said.

Not everyone in the audience agreed.

Melba Kiser of Noblesville said a gas tax hike is unfair to people like her husband, whose jobs require that they spend much of their time on the road.

“The decision to drive is not an option. It’s a necessity,” she said. “There are many people with modest incomes who have to drive long distances in order to make a living. It is a significant burden on someone who is at a medium to low income.”

When Grant Pullen competed in the annual Mr. Zionsville pageant, he dedicated his performance to his mother, Beverly PulZCHS len, who lost a battle with cancer last May. “She knew that I always wanted to do this and had a passion for making people laugh and performing,” said Pullen, who was crowned Mr. Zionsville 2017 on Jan. 26. “It was really awesome to do it for her.”

The fundraising event showcases 12 Zionsville Community High School seniors competing in talent and performing in a variety of skits.

“I didn’t necessarily think I was going to win but definitely knew I was going to help put on a good show,” he said.

For his talent, Pullen performed an original comedic skit with dancing pulled from iconic scenes.

“I thought I had a decent shot,” he said.

Pullen always wanted to participate in the event, which is almost exclusively produced by members of the senior class. His older sisters are both past directors.

He said that through the rehearsals and stress he bonded with his fellow contestants.

“We all went through the same thing. I think that helps bring us together,” he said. “I love hanging with them.”

The evening was filled with surprise performances with an opening video that Pullen helped to orchestrate in the theme of “The Office.” Principal Tim East surprised the audience by dancing during the show.

The event raises funds for the prom, which will be held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

Roughly $12,000 was raised through ticket sales and $600 through the new People’s Choice Award, which was won by Christopher Guerrero. Ryan Stein won Mr. Spirit, as selected by the other contestants, and Steven Maler was awarded Mr. Talent.

Other contestants were Cole Nalbandian, Jared Thies, Joe Weddle, Tommy Weidner, Johnny Dattilo, Jake Nutter, Forrest Brown, Matthew MacLean and John Alex Rusyniak.

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Presbyterian Church will once again welcome two parenting experts who are both family authors and counselors in Tennessee. Sissy Goff and David Thomas will present “Parenting: Modern Parents, Vintage Values” March 11 at the church.

Goff ZPC member Lynn Strueh, a mom of three, organized the speakers’ first visit to the church last year and also arranged the 2017 event.

“I saw Sissy and David speak two years ago at a conference. I was just really impressed with them. They gave very practical, knowledgeable advice, so we had them at our church last year,” Strueh said.

The main session will discuss how parents can raise polite children in the digital age.

“It’s facing the harder issues of how we keep our kids respectful and in tune with people when they’re so focused on technology and their cell phones,” Strueh said. “It’s hard to navigate technology while staying focused on those good, old values of being respectful.”

There will be a meal after the main sessions, followed by two breakout sessions.

A new group at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, the Teen Community Service Club, wants to fill the giving back need of teens searching for ways to volunteer.

The idea was formed last year when many of the teens in the summer reading program wanted to volunteer to help with the program to build their resume and get experience in a specific group or organization.

“We realize that there are literally hundreds of kids who need community service hours for one group or another,” said Patricia VanArsdale, the teen services librarian who will lead the group. “We can funnel kids right to that organization and hopefully help (students) get their hours quickly.”

The club is scheduled to meet for roughly two-and-a-half hours on a monthly basis starting Feb. 15. Its first project will be to create a dry laundry detergent for the Zionsville Food Pantry. VanArsdale said that for many

area residents in need, items such as cleaning products and toiletries are not covered by food stamps.

“It’s not just giving back to the kids and helping them get these hours, but it’s also giving back to the community,” VanArsdale said.

“We see a need, fill a need. The goal eventually will be to find different sorts of groups and organizations that have a need and we can work together and fill that need.”

The club will be open to students in grades six through 12. They will meet for a few months in the spring, then take a hiatus during the summer before reconvening in the fall to coincide with school and demands for community service hours through student clubs and organizations.

“Ultimately, I feel really good about the message of it,” VanArsdale said. “It’s to help the kids. It’s to help the community.”

I worry more in winter than I do during summer or the equinoxes on either side. The big reason is I have lived in plain talk winter places where bad things can happen.

I was born in one of those places, northern Wisconsin, where a blizzard once snowed us in for three days. We were never in danger, I’m sure, but to a little kid, the eerie silence that follows a storm is spooky.

We huddled around the stove during the day and snuggled under multiple blankets at night. To be honest, on the third day the sun came out, the snow plow broke through and life was good again.

Fast-forward to the late 1960s. I was working for The Associated Press in Sioux Falls, S.D. Winter roared in with hurricane-like winds, and the mercury plummeted to minus-48 degrees.

Automobile exhaust clouds turned to ice crystals. It was like driving through a storm of mirrors dazzling in a blinding winter sun.

My car froze solid two blocks from work, and I got out and walked. Big mistake. I have never felt cold like that, and hope never to do so again. I walked most of the distance backward to keep the wind at my back.

Several years later I took a shot at farming in Minnesota’s Valley of the Jolly Green Giant.

Winter rolled in with a series of blizzards fol-

lowed by sub-zero temperatures that hung around for long, dark, frigid days and nights.

My old farmhouse never even tried to fight back. The pipes seized up. The well froze and I had to have water trucked in for the cattle.

My greatest fear during that winter was electrical failure that would render the tank heaters on my car and my tractor inoperative.

The cold was so severe that when I slammed my car door the window shattered.

My fears were magnified by the realization that my farmhouse was just eight miles from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House on the Prairie.” In retrospect, watching that TV show was not a wise choice. I huddled in bed at night listening to the wind rattling the windows.

Even a few years ago here in the milder climes of Indiana, we wrapped our pipes against the chill and worried whether our cars would start in the morning. Back then most cars still had carburetors, and we placed electric lamps beneath the hoods at night to keep the fuel system from freezing up.

But now it’s February and spring, folks say, is just around the corner. I’ll relax when it’s time to start mowing the lawn.

“I always did want to be a police cover story officer and a K-9 officer,” Stutesman said. “I’ve always had dogs my whole life. Knowing what they’re capable of and how they can definitely do more than what humans can do, which makes this a safer community, is what I wanted to do.”

Stutesman has been an officer with the Zionsville Police Dept. for six years, but in August 2016 he finally got to fulfill his dream of working with a police dog. Jelka, a nearly 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, joined ZPD after six weeks of training with Stutesman at Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind. Vohne Liche specializes in training social police dogs and has worked with the National Security Agency, U.S. Pentagon Police, U.S. Army and some of the nation’s biggest police departments.

Jelka was born in Sweden and received specialized training there before being matched with Stutesman, so his six weeks of training consisted of bonding with the dog and learning how to communicate with her — in Dutch. The trainer who worked with her as a puppy used Dutch commands, and Stutesman said it’s easier to teach humans a few Dutch words than to reteach a dog all of its commands in English.

“That’s the only other language I know, those

things I need to (command) her,” he said.

He also learned that the key to communication isn’t always what he says, but how he says it. Jelka is trained to react to situations in part by the tone of voice Stutesman uses.

“We actually had to go through two days of training to do the high-pitched voice, because as a cop you don’t want to sound like a Disney character, but we had to get used to that so she realizes, ‘OK, dad’s happy now,” he said. “If we go into the pirate voice, the deeper, almost like a cold type of voice, she knows that daddy’s on edge and that she needs to go to work and watch out.”

Jelka loves her job, Stutesman said, because to her it’s all play. She was selected as a possible law enforcement dog at a young age because of her strong drive to chase a ball, an instinct used to train her for police work.

“Everything that they’re trained for is just to get that ball, so basically it’s play for them. They don’t realize that they’re working,” Stutesman said. “That’s exactly what you want in a police dog.”

Jelka is trained to chase down suspects, search for lost children and sniff out drugs, among other things. Stutesman said she’s already helped police discover illegal substances on several occasions.

She also serves as a friendly ambassador for the department, helping to diffuse tense situations.

“It helps the kids to be able to relax, too, (and see) everything’s safe now,” Stutesman said. “The dog is automatically the hero, and that’s

fine because she does all the work, anyway, and I just walk behind her.”

ZPD Chief Robert Knox said Jelka is fitting in well and has been a welcome addition to the force.

“Just the presence sometimes of a K-9 will take the wind out of people’s sails if they have some bad intentions of resisting or running,” he said. “If you get the right dog, it’s just amazing what it brings to the table and the community.”

For Stutesman, having Jelka at his side has been more than a dream come true.

“She’s been a blessing,” Stutesman said. “It’s been well above what I ever could have imagined.”

Stutesman, his wife, Meaghan, and their toy poodle, Ruthie, live in Westfield and were all eager to welcome Jelka into their home.

Although Jelka is the canine with advanced training, she defers to Ruthie when they are together.

“Ruthie’s a nine-pound terror of the house, and Jelka knows it,” Stutesman said.

Legislature: Make a choice Is infrastructure the new battle cry for increased taxes? The liberals have global warming as a key arrow in their quiver to raise taxes and to institute regulations. And now, Republicans have decided they, too, need their own arrow, and it just might be infrastructure. They think raising taxes for infrastructure improvements is an innocuous approach for the exercise. We know Republicans don’t really believe in all the smaller government/less spending blather they’ve espoused for years. Granted, Republicans serving in our state Legislature are far better at managing a budget than are the Republicans serving in Washington, but that’s quite a low bar. We’re disappointed our legislators have started to embrace an increase in our gasoline tax before actually debating it; they seem in absolute pain to raise those fees. Just wait; if it happens, some of those dollars will go toward funding mass transit, to which, you might know, we are opposed for our region. The larger question becomes this: Why is the General Assembly not negotiating with Washington? Of every gas tax dollar sent to Washington’s “highway account,” Indiana is returned 92 cents. Can we get someone in the Statehouse fighting for the rest of us? Or maybe use the state’s surplus (yes, we have been over-taxed) to fly President Trump here on Air Force One to negotiate the deal … in about 15 minutes?

We think it’s time legislators prioritize the spending of our tax dollars. Maybe they need say we can have infrastructure spending or we can have early childhood education, but we can’t have both.

Commentary by Terry Anker Former President Ronald Reagan called it a “commonplace occurrence.” Yet he took careful note that, “In the eyes of many in the world, this every four-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle.” Sure, we have contentious, long and expensive campaigns. We divide ourselves into all manner and sort of identity groups. If no real distinction exists, we scurry about eager to create new categories to be celebrated, protected, attacked and over-generalized. We vote to, at long last, break from it all, return to the mundane and sublime realities of our own lives. We relax a bit. We breathe The pause gives us much-needed opportunity to gain perspective, even if the fervent protests of a few linger beyond the

November end-point. Do we believe, or simply hope, that our protagonists will boldly carry our aspirations now that we have bestowed them with power? Or, do we regroup to organize resistance and plan for a replacement?

Regardless of our personal position on the current state of leadership, most of us find other things to do once an election has passed. But in the imperial city we call our nation’s capital, the courtesans scramble for standing in a new order. Filling luxury airport lounges and seated at the Round Robbin Bar in the famed Willard Hotel, the K Street consultants, lawyers, lawmakers, professional protestors, media and other elites scheme and cajole to find favor and seek advantage.

Political theater is played in acts. As one ends, another begins.

I turned 45 last week. Four. Five. Sounds old when I think about it, which has been a lot recently as I’ve battled humor a cold while failing miserably at juggling my knives of work, kids, Doo and ever-present dirty dishes.

But here’s the thing, I don’t feel old. I don’t feel like I’m at the half-way point of life; that the next four decades are going to suck now that I need reading glasses and calcium. I actually feel great. I’m for the most part healthy, strong and on occasion even the teeniest bit wise. I know I’d much rather be 45 than 25, and with my children mere steps from being out the door, I’m truthfully looking forward to my 50s (because according to the commercials, once I’m AARP eligible, I’ll spend all of my time traveling to exotic locations, spoiling precocious but adorable grandkids and either fishing with Doo or playing bingo with galpals. Can’t wait!).

Part of this youthful “spirit” is the fact that both my parents and Doo’s are still looking good in their 70s. Thanks to hair dye, fitness programs and bionic body parts, “the elderly” don’t appear to be so.

I’m not saying that they aren’t old, because believe me, they definitely are (smiley face emoji), it’s just that relative to memories of my own grandparents, Mamaw, Judge, Grams and Pops, are not only still in the game, but playing really well. And if they’re not calling for subs yet, then I sure as shoot won’t either. Go team!

I’m also lucky to have two outspoken daughters who don’t think twice about announcing that my clothes are “so last season” or that my makeup is “not on point.”

I credit them with keeping my often questionable “style” at least in this decade. And my sons make certain I’m always abreast of the latest tech gadgets, “must-watch” shows, and mom-appropriate slang. Basically, I have handlers that keep me young, even if it’s only to ensure I don’t embarrass them in public.

So bring it on, 45. I’ll be one step closer to bingo.

All the news that’s fit to sprint Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen has a Fitbit to keep track of her walking. I am not a walker myself, although I have walked back on several humor promises I made when we got married, as well as three New Year’s resolutions. That’s about as much exercise as I’m comfortable with.

I do walk to my office every day (it’s not my fault I work from home) and I walk to the pro shop to get my golf cart. Oh, and to the garage to get on my riding lawn mower. Maybe I don’t give myself enough credit. The NASEWA (National Association of Something Else to Worry About) recommends 10,000 steps a day, something most people won’t consciously do. Unconscious exercise sounds a lot less strenuous.

We had trouble getting the Fitbit and the laptop to sync, so we called Kevin, our tech guy. Kevin is used to dealing with people who sit in front of a computer all day, and he thought that helping them set up their Fitbit could lead his clients to begin a physical fitness regimen — leaving less time for them to download viruses and malware, the bread and butter of his repair service.

“I can’t find your dongle,” Kevin said to Mary Ellen as he fumbled through the Fitbit box.

I didn’t know what a dongle was, but I’m pretty sure in Yiddish it’s a dirty word. I learned that it’s a small plug-in that allows electronic devices to communicate with each other. I’d always called it a thingamajig.

Soon, Kevin got everything to work.

Everything.

“Did you get a good night’s sleep?” I asked Mary Ellen the next morning.

“Let me check. It says I did, but for some reason I’m exhausted.”

I reminded her that the Fitbit vibrates on the wrist as a warning if you haven’t moved for an hour. We had no idea how to turn that application off. I told Mary Ellen she needed her sleep to be more restless. Yeah, I actually said that.

I don’t want a Fitbit of my own. Instead, I plan to follow my wife around. I’ll never reach that 10,000 goal, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Chamber honors Town Criers

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com While honoring eight people and two businesses, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet achievement also recognized the 75 individuals who have been honored over 50 years, collectively sharing the Town Crier award.

A commemorative video captured a representative winner from every 10 years of the award before the 2017 honor was presented to Andy Pickell.

The annual awards banquet was held Jan. 27 at the Palomino Ballroom.

A new award, the Zionsville Chamber Champion, was presented to Erica Carpenter, who ran the chamber’s social media and helped the chamber with marketing efforts.

Rhonda Cranshaw received the Dahlia Excellence in Service Award for her leadership with bicentennial events in Boone County.

Amber and Nick Moore, who own Restore Life Chiropractic, were named the Volunteers of the Year. The couple moved to Zionsville several years ago from the East Coast and “jumped in, they joined the chamber and volunteered to help at almost all of the chamber events,” event emcee and Fox59 reporter Sherman Burdette said.

The Business of the Year Award went to DK Pierce and Associates, which elected to be an early tenant of Zionsville’s Creekside Corporate Park rather than find a location to expand out of town.

Home sale prices rise in 2016 Commentary by Jim Litten F.C. Tucker Company’s monthly real estate market stats indicated a strong finish to 2016, with home sales up 5.2 real estate percent for the year and December 2016 sales up 5.3 percent compared to December 2015. Likewise, the average year-to-date home price for the 15-county Central Indiana region rose 3.4 percent to $188,616.

Boone County’s pended sales dipped slightly by 1.8 percent in December 2016 compared to December 2015. Prices have increased by 7.3 percent over last year to an average of $290,725. The number of available homes for sale, however, continues to decline in the region; inventory in Boone County slid 14.5 percent in December, a drop of 48 homes available compared to this time last year.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sales price increased 7.6 percent to $402,599, which continues to be the highest average for the 15-county region.

• Inventory moved at a slower pace in Zionsville in December 2016. Overall, homes

sold in 81 days – five more days than this time last year.

• Pended home sales increased in Zionsville. In December 2016, 31 homes sold – an increase of seven homes compared to December 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, one was priced $1,000,000 to $1,999,999; 10 were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 15 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; one was priced $200,000 to $299,999; and four were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

Positive consumer confidence has buoyed home sales through the end of 2016. Looking ahead to 2017, we expect to see 50 percent of the market made up of first-time homebuyers and anticipate many of the boomerang buyers, who lost their houses in the Recession, will step back into home ownership.

Chamber to move into new town hall

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com When the new Zionsville Town Hall is complete by the end of the year, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce relocation will be one of its tenants.

“From a town’s perspective, we are absolutely thrilled to have the chamber with us,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said. “We view the chamber as an extension of the town government. You are part of us.”

The announcement was made during the chamber’s annual awards banquet Jan. 27.

Haak said the chamber would become the first tenant in the town hall that is under construction with an expected completion date of October.

The chamber’s offices will be on the second floor of the building, occupying 1,125 square feet and paying $1,400 per month in rent, almost identical figures to its current office size and rent. There will be enough office space for three chamber employees.

“The advantage of being near the people with whom we interact is huge,” Chamber Executive Director Tracy Phillips said. “We have over 400 members of the chamber of commerce, and it’s not just about Main

tenants will occupy more areas of the building, according to Amanda Dorman, Town of Zionsville director of communications and community relations.

The $10.2 million, 42,600-square-foot town hall will house town departments of planning and economic development, finance and records, technology, the mayor’s office and fire department administration.

Officer recovering from PTSD

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com When Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen sent his police officer daughter to the autopsy of Katherpublic safety ine Giehll and her 4-year-old son, Raymond, he never imagined it would trigger post-traumatic stress disorder that would almost cost his daughter’s life.

Taylor Nielsen was hospitalized more than three months ago but is now back on the job with the Lebanon Police Dept. on administrative duty. “I don’t wish this type of thing upon anybody, but unfortunately it’s something that we have to deal with in our line of work,�

Taylor Nielsen said. “I’m definitely glad that we’re starting to build awareness for it.�

Taylor Nielsen said that she has received “an outpouring of support� from as far away as the United Kingdom. “There’s just a stigma around mental health, and we need to break that, because there are a lot of people suffering silently,� she said.

More attention has been given to PTSD locally. Mike Nielsen said 38 percent of public safety employees suffer from PTSD.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in the Carmel Arts & Design District on Feb. 11 news@currentzionsville.com The Saturday before Valentine’s Day will be a romantic evening in the Carmel Arts & Design District.

On Feb. 11, there will be a Valentine’s holidays trolley available from 5 to 9 p.m. The free trolley will take riders around Main Street and through the heart of downtown Carmel. It’s a way to beat the cold or rest your feet as you explore places to shop, browse and dine on a Saturday evening.

Live music will take place in many of the art galleries along Main Street and the galleries will keep later hours so families, friends and couples can stop in to see the numerous arts exhibits and works by local artists.

Many of the pieces are for sale for a quick Valentine’s gift.

To help guide people on their walks, there will be a scavenger hunt with prizes available. Each participating gallery on the scavenger hunt will have roses available for attendees as well.

• Enjoy a glass (or bottle) of wine at Peace Water Winery (37 W. Main St.). In addition to its intimate indoor space, its outdoor dining has heaters to keep you warm even in February. • Sample some beers at The Pint Room (110 W. Main St.). The Carmel location offers 124 drafts, and at any time there are 50 to 70 local Indiana tappings, including beer, cider and mead. The Pint Room even offers something for the kids, which is a draft line of non-alcoholic root beer.

Nickel Plate to host events

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Nickel Plate Arts will again host Valentine’s Day for All, Feb 10, 11 and 14, at the Nickel Plate Arts Campus. Events will family fun include live music, art-infused activities and events for singles, couples, children and groups.

Program Coordinator Kavita Mahoney said Valentine’s Day at Nickel Plate Arts is no typical “Hallmark holiday,” and the art-infused activiMahoney ties go beyond candy hearts and red roses.

• Nickel Plate Arts Family Valentine’s Day will be held from noon - 5 p.m. Feb. 11. The Family Valentine’s Day event will include children’s activities, crafts and sweet treats. This event is free and attendees are encouraged to come and go as they please.

• Nickel Plate Arts will host three Date Night events from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 10, 11 and 14. Date Night is for couples and groups and will include a wine and beer bar, live music and various Valentine’s Daythemed activities. The cost for Date Night is $10 per activity for two or $50 for two to enjoy all six activities.

Peewinkle’s to present cabaret

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Peggy Melchior Pearson is convinced the Indiana State Museum is the perfect home for Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio.

“We have exposure to family fun many more families and increased seating capacity,” Pearson said. “Also, families that come can combine it with visiting and experiencing all the things the Indiana State Museum has to offer. It’s great to be within the White River State Park area.”

The Valentine’s Cabaret, the studio’s fourth program in the museum, will be held Feb. 10 to 14 at the museum, 50 W. Washington St., Indianapolis. Pearson and Peewinkle’s partner Debbi White will be the puppeteers.

Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio moved from its former location to 25 E. Henry St., Indianapolis, to the museum in September 2016.

The shows are 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Feb. 10; 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.Feb.11; 1 p.m. Feb. 12; and 9:30 and 11 a.m. Feb. 13-14.

Pearson said the Valentine’s show is primarily for ages 2 to 10. Children ages 2 and under are admitted free.

Several Indianapolis Chinese organizations will join in the celebration, including Indianapolis Chinese Performing Arts, Indianapolis Chinese Community Inc., America China Society of Indiana and the Confucius Society.

The event also will celebrate the puppet studio’s 20th year.

Pearson said the event is designed to raise funds to restore the studio’s puppet inventory.

Brother, nephew of Thomas Kinkade to visit

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com The Thomas Kinkade Zionsville Gallery will host its first Kinkade Generations Event Feb. 10 and 11.

The Kinkade Generations Event will feature a visit from art art historian Patrick Kinkade (artist Thomas Kinkade’s brother) and his son, Zac Kinkade (Thomas Kinkade’s nephew). Attendees can purchase a new canvas at the Thomas Kinkade Zionsville Gallery by Thomas Kinkade, Thomas Kinkade Studios or Zac Kinkade and the new canvas will be eligible for special embellishments, including highlighting by Patrick Kinkade and an original sketch by Zac Kinkade on the back of the canvas.

“It can’t get any more Kinkade than that,” Patrick Kinkade said.

Patrick Kinkade said the embellishments can be whatever the collector desires to enrich the experience of their canvas. Patrick said his brother asked him to assist in these types of events to help provide the one-on-one intimate contact that Thomas Kinkade cherished with collectors of his art.

“He absolutely loved collectors,” Patrick said.

Attendees can also interact with the Kinkades and ask questions and hear stories about Thomas Kinkade. “(Patrick) is truly genuine with a great sense of humor, and he works so well with Thomas Kinkade collectors and shares wonderful stories about growing up with his brother, some stories that might even surprise you,” gallery owner Barbara Jennings said. “We are really excited to be meeting Zac, his son, who we see as potentially truly carrying the Thomas Kinkade legacy.”

Dance Kaleidoscope presents ‘Divas’

“Everybody is entertainment going to have memories to each of those songs,” said Paul Hansen, DK marketing director. “They are going to recognize everything. The choreographers are doing something really cool and different with that. So it’s going to be a really nice experience for everyone at many levels.”

“Divas” is set for Feb. 9 through 12 at the OneAmerica Stage at Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis.

ISO brings Teddy Bear Concert Series to Carmel — At 11 a.m., March 4, the Indiana Symphony Orchestra will bring its popular Teddy Bear Concert Series to Carmel. “Giant’s Violin” will be performed at the Carmel Clay Public Library. ‘Abstract Painting in Europe, 1949-1968,’ this spring at the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University — From March 11 to May 7 the Eskenazi Museum of Art will present ‘Abstract Painting in Europe, 1949-1968,’ curated by Jenny McComas, the Eskenazi Museum of Art’s Curator of European and American Art. The works in the exhibition were created between 1949, the year that saw the division of Germany into East and West, and 1968, a year marked by civil and political unrest across the continent, from student and worker uprisings in Paris to anti-Soviet protests in Prague. Ten paintings from the museum’s permanent collection representing artists from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Hungary and Poland will be on view in the exhibition. Taste of Carmel had become so popular that a change in scenery was necessary.

The 14th annual Taste fundraiser of Carmel, a fundraiser for Orchard Park Elementary School, will be held at 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. March 2 at the 502 East Event Centre, 502 E. Carmel Dr. Previously it was held at Ritz Charles.

“We outgrew the space at Ritz Charles, and this new venue will allow for our guests to have more room to visit vendors and socialize,” said Jenn Penix, chair of the event. “We are able to add an additional five vendors and more reserved seating as well.”

There will be samplings from more than 45 restaurants.

Penix said all proceeds go directly to the school.

Penix said the event is planned and executed by parent volunteers.

“It is an impressive undertaking for this group of about 15 moms, most of whom work full-time as well,” Penix said.

This year’s event has a Hollywood theme.

“The teaching theme at Orchard Park this year is based on ‘every student is a star,’ with a focus on Hollywood,” Pennix said. “At TOC,

elements of Hollywood will be seen in our decorations, at our photo booth, and our centerpieces which will be made by OPE students in a Hollywood theme.”

General admission tickets are $30 for the event ages 21 and older. The First Taste, the VIP party, will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Attendance is limited to 150 guests. Tickets are $75 and include early entry to Taste of Carmel.

Comfort Food to Beat the Winter Blues: Baked Spaghetti Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Cook time: 35 minutes Servings: 6 Ingredients: Nonstick spray, 1 package (16 ounces) spaghetti, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 cup chopped onion, 1 cup chopped green pepper, 1 pound ground beef, 1 can (28 ounces) tomatoes with liquid, cut up, 1 can (4 ounces) mushrooms, drained, 1 can (2 1/4 ounces) sliced ripe olives, drained, 2 teaspoons dried oregano, 2 cups Borden Cheese Mild Cheddar Shreds, 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Cook spaghetti. Heat butter over medium-high heat

until hot. Saute onion and pepper until tender.

Add ground beef browned; drain. Stir in tomatoes, mushrooms, olives and oregano. Bring to boil and reduce heat to medium. Simmer 10 minutes. Layer spaghetti, vegetable mixture and cheese. Combine soup with water; pour over casserole. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake uncovered 30-35 minutes, or until thoroughly heated.

Tallinn: the old and the new Commentary by Don Knebel Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, includes one of Europe’s best preserved medieval city centers. It is also one of the world’s travel most tech-savvy cities.

The city now known as Tallinn was founded on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland sometime before 1154, when the town appeared on a Muslim cartographer’s map. After the town was captured by Denmark in 1219, it was named Reval. Strategically located between Russia and Scandinavia, Reval became an important medieval trading center. In 1285, it joined the Hanseatic League, a confederation of northern European market towns. Merchants built large homes in an area near the port now called Old Town, protected by stone walls with cylindrical towers topped by conical roofs. In about 1500, wealthy residents added a 400-foot-tall spire to Old Town’s St. Olaf’s Church, making it among the tallest structures in the world at the time. Toompea, a hill overlooking Old Town, was originally a separate town but joined Reval in 1877. Reval

changed its name to Tallinn in 1918 when Estonia declared its independence from the Russian Empire. An 11th century castle on Toompea now houses the Estonian Parliament.

Tallinn, with a population of about 450,000, is home to 32 percent of all Estonians and generates more than half of Estonia’s GDP. One of the most digitally connected cities in the world, Tallinn, the birthplace of Skype, has the largest number of startup companies per capita in Europe. In 2007, Tallinn residents participated in the world’s first internet election.

In 2013, London’s Daily Mail called Tallinn one of the seven smartest cities in the world.

Tallinn attracts more than 4 million visitors a year. Many get a great view of historic Old Town from atop nearby Toompea. In 1997, Tallinn’s Old Town and Toompea were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
