DNA law inspired by Zionsville murder now in effect

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com With the implementation of Senate Bill 322, Indiana requires all felony arrestees to submit a DNA sample.

PUBLIC SAFETY The bill was signed into law last summer but went into effect Jan. 1 after the state spent time gathering supplies, hiring personnel and training employees to use the equipment.

Boone County law enforcement officials, including Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, Prosecutor Todd Meyer and Zionsville Police Dept. Chief Robert Knox, proposed the bill after the murder of 82-year-old John Clements in Zionsville. Nielsen said matching a DNA sample from the scene to a sample in Ohio was the only reason the case was solved, which led to the arrest of Damoine Wilcoxson in 2016.

Nielsen said local jails previously collected fingerprints and took photographs,

but only those convicted of violent crimes or sex offenses were required to provide a DNA sample. Now, all felony arrestees will provide a sample via cheek swab after being booked.

The samples are placed in a sealed envelope and sent to the Indiana State Police.

The bill also specifies that a DNA sample will be removed from the database if the charges are converted to misdemeanors, if the charges are dropped or if there are no other felony charges filed against the arrestee within one year.

With the state providing the supplies and training, Nielsen said there is no cost to the county other than the five minutes it takes to swab.

“I think it’ll impact us tremendously,” he said. “I think you’re going to see a lot of DNA samples that are put in the database that may or may not have been there in any other arrest that we’ve done over the years. This is truly a step for us as law enforcement to provide us that tool that we need to solve crimes, such as the Wilcoxson crime.”

After being severely abused and left for dead with multiple injuries, a 4-month old puppy is recovering with the help PETS of Zionsville-based Every Dog Counts Rescue.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services contacted the nonprofit after discovering the puppy named Halsey.

“We’re a medical rescue. We take sick and injured dogs,” Director Tara Harris said. “IACS will contact us if they have a dog like this that is badly injured and needs medical attention more than they can provide there. We received Halsey Jan. 24.”

Halsey was taken to VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center in Fishers for initial treatment. An arrest has been made for the abuse.

“She had multiple skull fractures, bleeding on the surface of her right eye, a broken jaw on the right side, multiple rib fractures and displaced fractures through her forearm,”

Halsey is recovering after being found with skull fractures, a broken jaw and many other injuries.

Harris said. “Due to the lack of treatment and how badly that arm was broken, the skin had started breaking down and getting infected.”

In addition to physical abuse, Halsey showed signs of neglect. The nature of future treatments are to be determined.

“Because she had multiple fractures and part of the bone was lifted up, she really isn’t out of the woods yet with that head injury,” Harris said. “We’re trying to save her leg, but because of how infected it was she may need to have that leg amputated in the future. If her jaw fracture won’t heal she’ll have to have surgery.”

Halsey is recovering in a foster home.

Harris said many people have contacted the rescue about adoption, but for now her caregivers are focused on healing her injuries.

The cost for her care could be several thousand dollars. EDC is accepting donations for her care.

“We’re a medical rescue, so if we get more than Halsey needed we would use them for other sick and injured dogs,” Harris said.

Mosque opposition not about religion, neighbors say

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com To say the proposed Islamic Life Center at 141st Street and Shelborne Road near the Carmel/Zionsville border has garnered a lot of attention is quite an AL SALAM understatement.

Not only did about 300 people show up to a Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals meeting Jan. 22, but the BZA has received 946 letters in opposition and 955 letters in support of the project. Because the story was picked up by national news outlets, some letters came from people who live elsewhere in Indiana, outside the state or even outside the United States.

Many of the letters from outside of Carmel are focused on religion. But those that live next to the development say their concerns simply address zoning issues.

Alan Irvin, a resident of Shelborne Road, said he thinks the mosque could be a “real asset to our community” but in a “more suitable site in Carmel.”

“I’m concerned that my opposition and that of my neighbors is being misconstrued as intolerance of this organization’s message or purpose,” he said. “We mean no slight or offense. Some proponents have unfairly insinuated that anyone opposed to this development necessarily is uninformed or biased against this group. Religion is not the issue.”

City councilor Laura Campbell, who represents the area, said she supports the remonstrators who oppose the project because she doesn’t believe the location is appropriate for a project of this size and scale.

“People on social media and in the general media have chosen to accuse the residents of discrimination, which is not the case,” she said. “The residents represent a diverse range of religions and nationalities. Accusing people of discrimination is an easy way to shut down a conversation when one has a weak defense of their own point of view.”

Some neighbors said they’ve received online attacks and threats from across the nation because they’ve voiced opposition to the project.

Ashhar Madni, vice president for the board of trustees of the Al Salam Foundation, said there has been some misunderstanding about what the Islamic Life Center would be.

Nonetheless, he said nobody at Al Salam is accusing the Community Features remonstrators of bigotry.

“I think their concerns are about traffic and other issues,” he said. “I don’t think they’re opposed because of

religion. Some might be unfamiliar with a mosque since it would be new to Carmel, but we can educate them.”

Neighbors in Overbook Farms, just west of the project, told Campbell the Islamic Life Center would have a negative effect on traffic because Shelborne Road is narrow.

The Al Salam Foundation has agreed to purchase 15 acres but said it would only build on a third of the land and would scale back previous plans that showed a much larger building. Documents from Al Salam initially showed the project including a multi-purpose prayer hall that could fit 300 to 500 worshippers, basketball courts, a soccer field, a tennis court and walking trails. A school and gym could be part of later phases.

Madni said Al Salam officials have scaled back plans, although a final version hasn’t been set. He said the foundation, which includes members primarily from Carmel, Zionsville and Westfield, has tried unsuccessfully for years to find a place for a mosque in Carmel and that some landowners have been unwilling to sell because of the proposed religious use.

Madni said the foundation has been willing to make adjustments on lighting, building height and more.

“We want to be good neighbors,” he said.

The site of the proposed center is zoned S-1, meaning it is planned for residential development unless a special exemption, such as for a religious use, is granted. Neighbors said they’d like to see single-family homes on the property.

The BZA will meet again Feb. 26 to gather additional public feedback and possibly vote on the project.

But they all have one thing in HOBBY common.

In emergency situations, they can — and do — provide life-saving services.

“Radio amateurs enjoy radio technology as a hobby. That’s the fun part. But it’s also a service — a vital service that has saved lives again and again when regular communications systems failed,” said Joe March, public information officer for the Indiana Chapter of the Amateur Radio Relay League.

“Most of the time, however, it’s the most fun you can have with a radio.

“It’s a way to talk with people around the world.”

But to do so, amatuer operators — commonly known as ‘hams’ — must be properly licensed.

On Feb. 17, the Central Indiana Amateur Radio Association will offer a free, one-day class at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital for anyone interested in obtaining a federal entrylevel amateur license. The day-long class will be followed by a 35-question, multiple choice test.

Class is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in conference room B at the hospital, 13500 N. Meridian St. Exams will be administered immediately after class. The class will review information from the Radio License Manual.

to operate legally,” March said. “Amateur radio is as old as radio itself and has been a licensed service for nearly a century, offering a pool of self-trained experts able to provide emergency backup communications.”

Smarter than a squirrel Commentary by Ward Degler We have a smart squirrel at our place.

Smart because he finally figured out his limitations.

PLAIN TALK It has to do with the bird feeders that hang on shepherd crooks in our front yard. Several months ago I watched the squirrel climb the metal pole to get to the feeders. Outraged, I did what any serious bird lover would do. I greased the pole.

For the next few days I gleefully watched the animal try to climb the slippery pole, fail and finally give up. I gave myself high praise for being smarter than a squirrel.

Then it rained, and the grease washed off. The squirrel apparently knew this would happen and was back the next day climbing the pole.

Then, something interesting happened.

He got to the top, ventured onto the hook and reached down to the feeder while hanging by his back feet.

Unfortunately, his intended grasp exceeded his reach, and he tumbled to the ground. It was both hilarious and pathetic.

I watched as he tried again and again, each time flopping to the ground.

The next day he was back, but this time he didn’t try to climb the pole. Instead, he

nosed around under the feeders where he found seeds the birds had dropped. Apparently, it dawned on him that birds drop more seeds than they eat.

Like I said, smart squirrel, smarter than the ones we had in Missouri where I grew up. There was a woodlot behind our house, and every morning a community of squirrels leaped from tree to tree until they reached the upper limbs of a hickory that was loaded with nuts.

One night a storm roared through the region, took down power lines, damaged roofs and blew over the hickory tree. While we were surveying the damage, the squirrels came leaping nonchalantly through the trees. With one final jump, they launched into empty space where the hickory tree had been, landing hard on the ground.

We were in hysterics. And it was even funnier when they did it again the next day.

The third day the squirrels arrived one at a time at the fallen hickory tree. Only this time they were were walking on the ground. I remember that a couple of them were limping.

Newcomers Club welcomes all

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Although the name might suggest otherwise, the Newcomers Club of Carmel isn’t just for those who recently SOCIAL moved to the area.

“Newcomers welcome those who are new to the greater metropolitan area and those who are experiencing a change in their lifestyle and wish to engage in new activities and meet new friends,” said Bonnie McClain, who handles publicity for the club. “Membership ranges from those who joined in 1989 through 2017.

We have a membership representing 31 different states, Puerto Rico and Bermuda.”

A nonprofit social club with more than 210 members, the Newcomers Club offers more than 25 interest group activities. The groups meet every month and members can participate in as many groups as they’d like. A welcome coffee is held for prospective members each month in a Newcomer member’s home, and there is a monthly luncheon with a featured program.

“A review of the activity groups that meet each month illustrates these members are active people. They seek ways to remain updated on what is happening in the world, especially through the Current Events and Book Club groups,” McClain said. “Participation in dining out activities, attending local arts performances, exploration day trips and reaching-out projects all speak to interest in being informed and being engaged in the community.”

Although the majority of the members are from Carmel, others live in Zionsville, Fishers, Noblesville, Indianapolis and Westfield.

“A common story among our newbies is, ‘We moved to this area to be closer to our children or grandchildren,’” McClain said.

“Most are ladies who have had professional careers or still do but would like to broaden their friendship base. Newcomers Club is a resource that has helped them connect with friends and explore their new community.”

Zionsville’s Silverman provides statewide support as leader of Indiana Youth Institute

Tami Silverman figured she would go a different route than many in her family.

“I come from a big family of teachCOVER STORY ers and educators, and I thought I’m not going to do that, I’m going to go my own path, and I did for a little while,” said Silverman, whose parents were educators. She chose to get her degree from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

“I think I have between 15 to 18 family members, aunts, uncles, cousins, who are teachers, principals or counselors in Indiana schools,” she said. “Now, here I am back with working with kids and education.”

Silverman, a Zionsville resident, joined Indiana Youth Institute as president and chief executive officer in April 2016.

“The great thing about the Indiana Youth Institute is it is nearly 30 years old, and it was founded by the Lilly Endowment to help all the organizations that help kids,” Silverman said. “A lot of those organizations, like Boys & Girls Clubs, are so busy with the day-to-day work that they don’t have the support to do strategic planning, to do development or do a fundraising plan. So, rather than have the endowment help each one with little things, they said, ‘Let’s create an entity so all those youth-serving organizations could have that one-stop shopping for whatever support they need.’

“What I really like is we get to work with about 800 youth-serving organizations across the state in any given year. So, you get a good picture of what’s going on with kids in the state.”

Silverman would like to see children have some of the same experiences she did as a child.

“Personally, I had a delightful time growing up in Indiana,” Silverman said. “I had grandparents who lived in an urban setting in Indianapolis, and I had grandparents who lived on a farm. I liked the diversity of that, and so we know growing up in Indiana can be great. But, unfortunately, today it’s not great for all kids, and we still have some big challenges ahead of us. So, having the honor of working in that is exciting.”

Silverman replaced Bill Stanczykiewicz, a Zionsville resident who spent 17 years as IYI president and CEO before leaving to become director of The Fund Raising School at IUPUI. Upon Silverman’s arrival, IYI worked on a new strategic plan. Besides collecting the Kids Count Data Book, which provides statistics and information on a variety of issues affecting children, Silverman said organizations wanted IYI to provide advocacy.

agencies),” Silverman said. “It’s more community engagement around kid issues.”

For instance, Silverman said if a church wants to start a mentoring program, IYT can help by explaining best practices and help launch the program.

“It’s all kids, all issues,” Silverman said. “Whatever that might be for that community, we want to help.”

Silverman said her main concern is that children get the support network they need.

“That can come from school, church, sports activities and home,” Silverman said. “Our goal is to make sure every Hoosier kid reaches their full potential, whatever that might be.”

IYT board vice chair Kevin Bower has been impressed with Silverman’s leadership.

“Tami is an energetic, passionate and strategic leader,” said Bower, Pacers Sports & Entertainment executive vice president/chief financial officer. “She leads by example and has worked very hard from Day 1 to advance the mission of IYI to have as positive an impact as possible on the development of Indiana’s Youth.”

IYI board chair Bruce Gobdel said Silverman has developed great relationships with other providers.

“She’s building relationships with a lot of governmental entities and our funders,” Gobdel said. “I’ve been involved in a lot of nonprofits, and she is right at the top of people I’ve run across in my career.”

After college, Silverman started in commercial banking.

“It’s very different than youth service but has a lot of the same background in administration oversight,” Silverman said. “You still have to be responsible for budgets. You

In 2016, 623 Hoosier infants died in their first year (7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births) an increase from 2015 (613 deaths, or 7.3 per 1,000 compared to 5.9 per 1,000 nationally). While in banking, she was approached by a board member of a nonprofit about taking a post. Silverman spent 13 years as CEO of Sojourn Shelter and Services in Springfield, Ill., a public health service agency focused on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse victims.

When her husband, Ross, took a job as a professor of health policy and management at IUPUI, Silverman studied the area and determined Zionsville would be a good place to raise their two children. Silverman was CEO and executive director for the Indianapolis-based Alpha Chi Omega for three years before taking the IYI post.

Commentary by Terry Anker Folks learning to speak English as their second language are known to complain about our propensity for homonym. Can we blame them?

Take the word proof. Among the abundance of potential meanings, online dictionaries define it as evidence or argument establishing or helping to establish a fact or the truth of a statement; as able to withstand something damaging; resistant; and, interestingly, to make fabric waterproof.

OK, maybe these definitions hang together.

But also proofing yeast (as opposed to proofing the shaped bread dough) refers to the process of first dissolving yeast in warm water to make bread.

Then, we warp the definitions to conform with our evolving modern lexicon. We attempt to prove our worth. We strive to prove our love. Yet, can we hope to advance evidence of our value? Can we make someone see our contribution? Or, do we waste our time talking about the doing instead of, well, doing the doing?

For now, let’s defer the semantics to a superior expert and focus on a simple example. We spend billions of dollars annually on attempting to prove we are sexy.

The ubiquitous commercials aimed at teenage boys for Axe Body Spray seem to wink at this reality, all the while selling tanker trucks of product to help these youngsters prove their worth.

The question remains: Can we prove any personal characteristic to anybody? Can we generate sufficient evidence to show that we are sexy? If we attended to our actions as much as we do to those actions being noticed, would we accomplish more?

READER’S VIEW Voice support for equal pay for women Editor, Gov. Holcomb’s 2018 Pillar III of his Next Level Agenda states, “Indiana must build the 21st-century talent required to sustain our prosperity and competitive edge as the world economy changes.”

Indeed, governor, we agree! Nevertheless, Indiana ranks as one of the states with the widest wage gaps between men and women.

How can Hoosier women participate in taking Indiana to the next level when they earn only 74 percent of what a man in Indiana makes for similar work? For minority women this gap is even larger: 36 percent for black and biracial women and 44 percent for Latinas, according to the Indiana Institute for Working Families. Women lose approximately $1 million over a lifetime when accounting for fewer Social Security dollars and time spent away from work for family care.

Gov. Holcomb wants talent to stay in Indiana? He needs to make sure Hoosier women are not moving to neighboring states where there is less of a wage gap: Kentucky at 80 percent, Illinois at 79 percent, Michigan at 78 percent and Ohio at

77 percent.

This gap is not a myth; it is an indicator of economic inequity. Wherever women work, it is necessary for them to have salaries comparable to men.

State Rep. Linda Lawson and State Sen. Jean Breaux filed legislation that strengthens Indiana law that has not been updated since 1965. House Bill 1390 and Senate Bill 93 hold employers accountable and give the Civil Rights Commission the jurisdiction to investigate and resolve complaints received by employees.

If you want Hoosier women to receive equal pay, call your state senator and representative and ask them to vote yes on House Bill 1390 and Senate Bill 93.

What a difference a good night’s sleep makes! I just rolled out of bed after a solid 11 hours of slumber. “Kids, it’s HUMOR safe to come out of your rooms! Mommy’s OK now!”

It’d literally been days since I’d been able to make that statement because a string of late evenings, 3 a.m. interruptions and early mornings have had my patience ready to commit hari-kari and my family ready to hit the Our Lady of Perpetual Peace speed dial.

My body simply refuses to function properly when I don’t get at least eight quality hours. Headaches, nausea and an acute sense of pettiness envelop me until I can find a dark, quiet place to lie down. Sure, I can fake it and continue on about my business as if nothing is wrong, but inside I am judging my husband, children and complete strangers for their inequities and blaming everyone for my misery. And I can’t hold all that crazy in forever, so inevitably by evening I’m passive-aggressively trying to garner support and sympathy through childish rants. Though theatrically impressive, it’s really quite pathetic.

Of course, I’ve known how important sleep is for years, but it wasn’t until recently that Doo understood. He attended a conference on how people can be happier in the digital age and learned that, although volunteering, exercising and building relationships are key, the No. 1 thing a person can do is sleep. Ah-ha! Validation at last!

This past week, sleep deprivation reared its ugly head, pushing me to the brink of an emotional and physical breakdown. But I’m back now. What a difference a good night’s sleep makes! Peace out.

Volunteering as couples

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Volunteering together may be an unorthodox way to celebrate a relationship around Valentine’s Day, GIVING BACK but Fishers couple Jim and Maddie Bromley and Noblesville couple Dale and Jean Morris say the act of giving back has not only strengthened their relationships, but also given them something to do in retirement.

Both couples spend time volunteering at Conner Prairie, an interactive history museum at 13400 Allisonville Rd., Fishers.

The Morrises help with special events. The Bromleys began their time at Conner Prairie through gardening.

“It’s nice to go together. We don’t always volunteer together, but we both do things separately at Conner Prairie,” Jean said.

“But if we volunteer for Symphony on the Prairie or special events, we usually go together. It is fun, and we get to know the same people that way and build relationships with people there.”

The Morrises began to volunteer at Conner Prairie approximately five years ago when they both retired.

they reached retirement, they began searching for something to do. Tending to the museum’s gardens on Mondays, when the museum is closed, sparked their interest.

“We went to a volunteer fair, and gardening is something we both do, and that’s how we started volunteering,” Maddie said.

The Bromleys also volunteer for Conner Prairie’s special events like Symphony on the Prairie or the Follow the North Star production.

“We enjoy doing this together. It’s always fun,” Jim said.

“It’s something we are able to do and enjoy, and it just so happens we do it together, and that’s an added bonus,” Maddie said.

Arts org to host ‘Valentine’s Day for All’

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Couples and families will have an opportunity to get involved with the Nickel Plate Arts on Valentine’s Day, THINGS TO DO as the organization is once again hosting its couples nights and family events.

The “Paint the Town Red” exhibit utilizing the color red also will be open through Feb. 24.

“Our key program, the signature Nickel Plate event for the Valentine’s Day holiday is our date-night program,” Executive Director Aili McGill said. “We invite local artists to come in and lead activities based for couples. These (projects) we have designed are pretty much guaranteed that anyone can do them, be successful, and make a cool piece of art. Couples always marvel about how much they learn about their partner through making art together.”

Some of the activities offered at date night include a poetry station, ukulele lessons, a cupcake-decorating station, creating an essential oil infuser, making ceramic tiles and a puzzle collage. The activities cost $10 per couple, or $50 per couple for all six activities. Date night will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 14, 15 and 16.

“All the artwork (from ‘Paint the Town Red’) will be for sale and makes a great backdrop for our date night,” McGill said.

Family Valentine’s Day will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 10, and families are able to create arts and crafts. The crafts are inspired by famous artists’ work. Crafts are $5 to $10, or $20 for unlimited crafts.

Simply Cranberry Mimosa Get it at Another Broken Egg Café, Fishers Ingredients: • 2 oz. Simply cranberry juice • 6 oz. Wycliff champagne • 1/2 lemon wheel Pour cranberry juice into a stemless wine glass and add champagne. Garnish with lemon wheel.

Serving: 10 pancakes What you need: • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 3 tablespoons Nestlé Toll House Baking Cocoa • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 large egg • 1 cup reduced-fat buttermilk or low-fat milk • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon red food coloring • Heart-shaped pancake cutters or cookie cutters (optional) Garnishes: Butter, powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir well. Chewing the fat on science Commentary by Dick Wolfsie They just reported on the local evening news that Indiana is the 10th-fattest state in the U.S. Where did they do HUMOR their research? The state fair?

The mini-marathon? That could make a big difference.

I have made fun of scientific researchers for their fascination with bizarre and meaningless numbers. These are individuals who, statistically speaking, are among the unhappiest people in the world. About 75 percent of the studies show that 57 percent of statisticians are 49 percent unhappier than 75 percent of all other scientists.

Here are a few odd stats: Redheads need 25 percent more novocaine in the dental chair than people with other hair colors; 67 percent of men prefer gas to charcoal grills; pet owners wake up 45 percent more often in the middle of the night.

According to the University of Illinois, overweight people use more gas per mile than people who are thin. This information helps Americans understand the crisis we face with our dependence on foreign oil.

Seems to me that the real crisis is more in domestic oil, canola, peanut and corn, all

Last year I had the occasion to drive from one end of Kansas to the other. I don’t care what the scientists say about overweight Indiana, Kansas is wider across the middle.

Patients get back on four feet

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Most physical therapy offices have treadmills, balance boards and exercise machines. But one particular office PETS motivates patients with toys and peanut butter.

Indy Pet Core, Indiana’s first stand-alone physical therapy facility for pets, is designed to get canines back on all four feet after surgery or while battling arthritis.

The business moved in December after launching at Whitestown’s Community Pet Healthcare, owned by Megan Cantrell and her veterinarian husband. Physical therapy was offered at the veterinary office several years ago with limited tools. As it grew, the business needed its own space. Cantrell found an ideal location on Main Street in downtown Whitestown.

Staff members see patients three days a week. Sessions usually last an hour and may utilize procedures like laser therapy to stimulate healing, electrical stimulation to build muscle and hydrotherapy with an underwater treadmill to relieve the weight on a dog’s joints. Progress is tracked by measuring muscles and the amount of weight dogs put on each foot.

pect,” Cantrell said.

Patients come from a variety of veterinary clinics. Post-surgery, most dogs are prescribed a six-week therapy plan with additional sessions as necessary.

Several staff members are canine-certified rehabilitation practitioners and work with veterinary assistants to treat pets.

Soon, Cantrell plans to add training classes and regards the new location as a “stepping stone” to eventually ad a rehabilitation pool and artificial turf for therapy, training and agility.

“Our big dream is to have a bigger facility,” she said.

Greek’s closes for remodel

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Greek’s Pizzeria in downtown Zionsville has temporarily closed for remodeling.

When it reopens, it will RESTAURANT feature a familiar face.

Mike Cole, who opened the restaurant at 30 N. Main St. nearly seven years ago, became the owner once again in late January after selling it in 2016.

When the restaurant reopens it may have a slightly different name, although Cole said the brand would still operate as Greek’s Pizzeria. Along with the remodel, he plans to increase draft beer options and add vegan choices to the menu. No items will be taken off the menu.

Cole said his wife, Julie, is vegan, as well as one of his sons. He got approval from Greek’s Pizzeria corporate to add vegan cheese to the menu.

“I’m actually happy to get it back,” said Cole, a Zionsville resident. “If anything, it’s going to get back to the original, how it was when we first opened as far as quick service, good service and quality food.

That’s the direction we want to go toward as far as making sure the place has a new fresh vibe and a new fresh look.”

In addition to the remodel, Cole has applied for a new liquor license for the restaurant. He said he anticipates early April as a re-opening date.

The remodel will include an updated draft beer bar area and new stoves, coolers, freezers and more.

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has been on the rise for decades, but the Zionsville Lions Club is CLUB hoping to help stop that trend.

The club will host a community informational meeting on diabetes from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Zionsville Lions Clubhouse, 115 S. Elm St. The meeting will cover information about diabetes, risk factors, steps to treat the disease and more.

“Diabetes is a new initiative of the Lions Club International. It really starts at the top,” said Dr. Mel Prince, a club member and retired senior medical director at Lilly Diabetes who will speak at the meeting.

“The international organization really wants to confront diabetes, which is a global health emergency, mainly through education and raising awareness.”

In 1958 .93 percent of the U.S. population suffered from diabetes, but that number jumped to 7.4 percent in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The percentage is expected to continue rising in the future, as 84.1 million Americans in 2015 had been

diagnosed with prediabetes, a condition that indicates a person is at risk of developing diabetes. Experts say that many more have diabetes or prediabetes and don’t know it.

In Indiana, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death and approximately 750,000 Hoosiers have the disease, according to information from the Zionsville Lions Club.

The community meeting is free and open to the public. Prince said it will be the first of many initiatives by the Zionsville Lions Club to educate the community about diabetes.

CSO to feature ‘Love Letter’ to violinist

“It kind of was,” violinist Tessa Lark said of her MUSIC relationship with composer-musician Michael Thurber. “I mean, I had met him before as alumni of NPR’s ‘From the Top,’ and we had mutual close friends for years and knew about each other’s works. We don’t really believe in love at

first sight, but when we sat beside each other at a board meeting, we liked what each other said.”

They soon fell in love.

Attendees at Carmel Symphony Orchestra’s Feb. 10 concert at The Palladium will hear and feel just how much in love these two music-types are. Lark will join the CSO in the world premiere of a composition called “Love Letter,” composed by, yes, boyfriend Thurber.

“I was so impressed with Michael’s writing that I asked him to write a concerto for me,” said Lark, the silver medalist in the ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in 2014. “There was a lot of back-and-forth during the writing process. We wanted something with a lot of my different styles in it and written in kind of ‘letter movements.’”

“Love Letter” consists of four movements and embodies Thurber’s admiration for Lark as both a musician and human being.

“Each movement is a tone poem that depicts different sides of Tessa’s personality and musicianship,” said Thurber, a double bassist who occasionally plays with Lark as a duet, playing a blend of bluegrass, jazz and classical.

“I didn’t know until the end that it was called ‘Love Letter,’” said Lark, a native of Richmond, Ky. “When it was finished he slipped the score under my door and with the words ‘I love you.’ It was an unbelievable gift, and it means everything to me to be able to play it.”

Although Lark has played two movements of the piece in public, this will be the official world premiere. Thurber, a native of Ogden Dunes in Northern Indiana, will not only be in attendance for his girlfriend’s performance, but will work with the CSO during rehearsals since the piece is so new “Michael has never heard it with a full orchestra, so he’s excited about it,” Lark said. “I think everyone will love it. And if the crowd claps really loud for it, there may be a special guest appearance. Hint, hint.”

Continuing the love theme in recognition of Valentine’s Day Feb. 14, the CSO also will perform familiar melodies of Gershwin and Bernstein, such as the Gershwin Brothers’ hit “Girl Crazy,” “Embraceable You,” “But Not for Me” and “I Got Rhythm,” and Bernstein’s “Three Dance Episodes” from “On the Town.” Following intermission, the CSO will perform Charles Ives’ “Variations on America,” and Howard Hanson’s “Symphony No. 2 in D-flat Major, Op. 30 Romantic.”

ART “Carmel is a thriving area. I’ve got a lot of clients there,” said Spalding, who lives in the Irvington area of Indianapolis. “They are close by so they can come in see the new stuff. It’s going to be mostly florals to tie into Valentine’s Day. There will Spalding be softer colors.”

by Rita Spalding.” Kim Greene, one of Art on Main’s co-owners, has taken private lessons from Spalding.

By Desiree Williams editorial@youarecurrent.com Michael Janosky has been an artist for as long as he can remember. After reading articles about art, watching art ART documentaries and drawing as a child, he found his passion for oil painting in high school.

Now, Janosky primarily paints landscapes in his studio at Nickel Plate Arts in Noblesville.

“I really enjoy looking Janosky for changes in the landscape through the seasons, and also at different times of day and under different skies and different types of clouds in the sky,” he said.

Janosky’s work will be on display with that of Kathryn Houghton in an exhibit at the Hoosier Salon Carmel Gallery, 22 N. Range Line Rd. The exhibit, “Near and Afar: A Matter of Perspective,” will begin at 5 p.m.

Many of his paintings feature beaches, dunes and lighthouses inspired by his hometown of Michigan City with its views of Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

I’m a lamp guy. I love lamps. They serve a functional purpose and provide beauty in a room. So when I GRAMMAR GUY see a great lamp at an antique store or at an upscale garage sale, you’d better believe I’m going to buy it, put it in the back seat and put a seat belt on it.

But the real question is, once I find the right spot in my living room for my new lamp, does it make the area well lit or well lighted? What is the difference between lit and lighted? Grammar Guy’s on the case.

The super-short answer is both lit and lighted are correct past tense forms of light. Technically, lit is considered an irregular verb because you have to change the spelling of light to make it past tense, whereas lighted is regular because you simply add -ed. Although through the years lit has gained popularity in common usage, there are some distinct ways each word usually gets used.

Lit is usually used as the simple, past tense verb of light. It means to illuminate or set on fire. The cake’s lit candles inadvertently set aunt Helen’s hair on fire. Or

this: The fireflies’ pleasantly blinking butt muscles lit the dark forest clearing.

Lighted can either be used as an adjective or a past tense verb. When lighted is used as an adjective, it means something like relating to being illuminated: The brightly lighted living room shone brilliantly thanks to dad’s new leg lamp. Or this: The glow of my lighted torch allowed us to see in the secret cave.

As a past tense verb, lighted should be used as the past participle of light. As a reminder, a past participle verb usually requires an auxiliary word in front of it, like had or have: We had already lighted our glow sticks by the time the dance party got into full swing.

Although technically lit and lighted are interchangeable (and therefore correct), in popular usage, lit is more commonly used in the simple past tense while lighted is more commonly used as a past participle verb.

South Africa’s true False Bay Commentary by Don Knebel Whatever is your current image of South Africa, it will be changed by a visit to False Bay, ironically the largest true bay in the nation and one of the largest TRAVEL in the world.

In the 17th century, Portuguese ships returning home from the East Indies stopped for supplies in Cape Town, located on Table Bay on the western side of the Cape Peninsula at the southern tip of Africa. The returning ships often mistook a rocky cape to the east of the Cape Peninsula as the point to turn north and found themselves in a gently curving bay almost 20 miles wide. They named the mistaken cape the “False Cape,” and the bay dividing the capes became the “False Bay” by association.

Today, the sandy northwest shore of False Bay, approximately 30 miles across the Cape Peninsula from the center of Cape Town, is lined with charming villages, each with its own unique character. Simon’s Town is home both to the South African

navy and a rare colony of African penguins that swim along with the tourists. Seal Island, a short boat ride from Simon’s Town, is home to more than 70,000 cape fur seals.

Fish Hoek is known for its unique shops and whale-watching opportunities. Kalk Bay remains a quaint fishing village, with an active harbor. Muizenberg is famous for its waves, providing some of the best surfing opportunities in the world for beginners. On their way to or from Cape Town, visitors to False Bay often stop in Stellenbosch, a Dutch town founded in 1679 and renowned for its world-class wineries at the foot of Stellenbosch Mountain.

A visit to Cape Town, a beautiful and sophisticated city, should be on everyone’s bucket list. A visit there is not complete without at least a day trip to False Bay.
