Financing plan draws concerns

By Ann Marie Shambaugh annmarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council has presented a new plan for building and financing a town hall, but the proposal has met retown hall sistance from some residents who claim it’s too expensive, too risky and too soon.

The plan calls for borrowing $10.2 million to build a 41,300-square-foot town hall behind the current one. Zionsville would make biannual payments on the project over 25 years through a lending process that is similar to a mortgage. The proposed plan has an interest rate of 2.75 percent that could be recalculated in 10 years. The council was scheduled to discuss the issue at its Feb. 1 meeting. The adjustable interest rate is just one of many concerns for Zionsville resident Rick Hardin. He doesn’t oppose Zionsville building a new town hall, but he believes it could be done on a smaller scale.

“If you’re in debt $10 million to $12 million, you’ve got to pay that debt every year,” he said.

“You’ve got to find the money somewhere, and if you need the money it’s going to come from people like me that live here.”

Others are concerned that the project will use funds that could have gone toward addressing other problems in town.

One Zionsville resident started an online petition asking the council to “hold off on approving anything on a new Town Hall” until “safety concerns are addressed on Oak Street with a roundabout per the 2013-14 Traffic Study or what is recommended by an independent engineering firm.” As of Jan. 29, the petition had about 200 signatures.

plan on Jan. 21, Councilor Tom Schuler raised similar concerns.

The council did not allow the public to speak at the special meeting.

“I’m surprised that we would be that aggressive when we’ve also got a lot of other issues around the town,” he said, citing increased traffic on roads and lack of raises for town employees.

He also said that during his time on council he has never seen anything but a tight budget, and he is concerned the town will have little money for anything else if the council commits to the new financing option.

The town had previously discussed selling bonds – a more traditional form of government financing – to pay for the new town hall. Using an installment purchase contract instead allows the town to avoid paying fees associated with bonds and gives the town greater discretion on which funds are used to make payments.

The plan calls for mostly using funds that will be available to the town in the future but were not included or available in the 2016 budget. The proposal calls for using an annual $283,066 in additional County Option Income Tax revenue that was not calculated in the most recent budget, $115,000 from food and beverage taxes, $55,000 from the Cumulative Capital Development Fund, and $94,000 in revenues from the Quail Run TIF area, which includes the site of the current town hall that is expected to be torn down and redeveloped into retail. Other funds could come from Boone County TIF revenues.

The current town hall is in an aging former church building that would cost millions of dollars to renovate without providing room to expand.

“The more we looked at it, I think over a 30year timespan it’s almost silly not to build a new building, because it’s almost going to pay for itself,” town councilor Jeff Papa said.

Supreme Court rules Zionsville reorganization valid

The Indiana Supreme Court has ruled that Zionsville’s reorganization with Perry Township is valid.

Justice Brent E. Dickson authored town news the opinion released Jan. 22.

“We now hold that the 2014 Zionsville-Perry Reorganization is not prohibited, and that Whitestown may not adopt annexation ordinances annexing territory in municipalities that are the result of completed reorganizations under the Act,” it states.

Miller Whitestown, which is primarily located between Zionsville and Perry Township, filed a lawsuit attempting to stop the merger in 2014. A Boone Co. judge sided with Whitestown, but that decision was overturned in June 2015 in an appeals court.

Whitestown then petitioned the Indiana Supreme Court to take the case.

“We are obviously disappointed, but we respect the Indiana Supreme

Court’s decision,” Whitestown Town Council President Eric Miller stated.

“We will continue to strengthen our relationship with the Town of Zionsville and all of our Boone County neighbors as we move forward as the fastest-growing community in the state of Indiana.”

Zionsville officials also expressed a desire to improve the relationship between the towns.

“Today’s ruling from the Supreme Court is very exciting for Zionsville,” said Tim Haak, who became Zionsville’s first elected mayor as a result of the reorganization. “I along with the Town Council will continue to work to make Zionsville a great place to live, work and Haak play. I also look forward to working with our friends in Whitestown to resolve our differences.”

“I’m pleased with the decision. Having a mayor is a game changer for Zionsville,” said Town Councilor Jeff Papa, who served as the town’s interim mayor in 2015. “We can concentrate on moving our town forward and on building good relations with our neighbors.”

Couple aims to streamline wedding plans

Cristina and Matt Goebel used their own personal experience, or frustration, to create a business. profile In November 2014, the Goebels launched Plan the Day, a wedding software solution for brides and professionals.

Cristina, who grew up in Zionsville, recently decided to hang up her pom-poms after four years of being an Indianapolis Colts cheerleader to be able devote even more time to her growing business.

The idea for Plan the Day began to emerge after Cristina and Matt got engaged in July 2012. The couple, who live in Indianapolis and have an office in Broad Ripple, were married in August 2013.

“With Cristina juggling a full-time job and Colts cheerleading, the time was short and the stress was high around the wedding planning,” Matt said. “I got to do way more wedding planning that I ever thought or guessed I would. I have a technology and management background, so I was trying to find a solution and help this process and help her get through it.”

Not being able to find anything, Matt

created an excel spreadsheet and started attending meetings with Cristina to help her keep everything organized.

“Slowly, our vendors began asking us to borrow our spreadsheet for their own brides,” Matt said. “That’s when it first started clicking there might be a need in the market.”

Cristina said the object is to have one centralized location for wedding plans.

“On average, couples are managing 10 wedding professionals, a DJ, photographer, florist, venue and so on,” said Cristina, who completed her freshman year at Zionsville Community High School before transferring to Cathedral. “I was finding I was getting emails over and over again by these 10 different people for the information.

“The biggest frustration was the itinerary piece of it. The itinerary keeps getting updated and changed. Each professional wanted the most updated itinerary. In my mind, why isn’t this on a platform that can be updated live, and the wedding professionals can go in and see? There was just a lot of back and forth. I just felt there was a better way.”

Firefighters Ball returns Feb. 6

By Kelsey Ligon • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Firefighters Ball will return Feb. 6 to celebrate the local fire department and the community it serves. event The ball is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Zionsville Fire Dept., and proceeds will help purchase safety equipment to help keep up with growth in the area.

“The goal is to responsibly add firefighters to the department to reflect the growth of the Zionsville community,” said Tiffany Howard, one of the primary organizers of the ball.

In addition to raising funds, the ball recognize several firefighters with awards that include Firefighter of the Year, EMT of the Year, Paramedic of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The awards are voted on by the firefighters themselves.

“They’re very modest. They enjoy the praise, but it’s not what their work is all about,” Howard said. “Sometimes they get a little embarrassed that this great community wants to show up and share their positive experiences.”

2016 Mr. Zionsville crowned

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Nine seniors danced, sang and drummed their way in hopes if claiming the title of Mr. Zionsville during the achievement annual talent show held Jan. 21.

Part variety show, the main purpose of the evening is to raise funds for the prom.

At the end of the evening Will Cunningham received the crown and the title, but for most of the young men the experience of bonding with each other was more important than winning.

“It’s such a family, and winning or losing wasn’t on people’s minds,” Cunningham said.

After a choreographed opening dance number in the spirit of Magic Mike, the contestants shared their talents of singing, drumming, comedy or dancing. The show was interspersed with skits about Zionsville cops, high school life and a teacher of the year parody award with a Steve Harvey/Miss Universe inspired ending. During one skit, participants answered questions mimicking certain celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Donald Trump and a Zionsville teacher.

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Karen Lankton Schmidt is doing her share to assist those dealing with the contaminated water system in Flint, Mich., red cross from her home in Zionsville.

Schmidt is a Red Cross volunteer who uses her expertise in Microsoft Excel, which operates as a computer spreadsheet, to help. Schmidt is part of an informal, national group known as the Virtual Disaster Assessment Team that has supported a great many disaster response operations in the past four years.

“They have me mapping out all their distribution points and mapping out all the people that have received filters so they can see all the areas they’ve reached and areas they might need to focus on,” Schmidt said. “It gives them data so they can figure out what they need to do next.”

Schmidt is a project manager, so she uses Excel quite a bit. She first started helping the Red Cross with the Texas and South Carolina floods in 2015.

“We had put in everyone’s address and what kind of damage they had,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt, 54, is working with the director of planning in Flint. Schmidt mapped out nursing homes and subsidized housing areas.

“Those are vulnerable people they really needed to target,” Schmidt said.

The Red Cross is providing bottled water and water filters to those in need.

Commentary by Ward Degler My sister says she’s planning a visit again this summer. Since she lives in Phoenix and travels rarely, it will be a wonderful reunion.

When she last visited plain talk several years ago, we met in Missouri to take an adult look at where we grew up. Even though she’s five years younger than I, we discovered a lot of common memories.

There was the house we lived in when I was in the eighth grade and she was a lowly third-grader. She fell off a neighbor’s swing and broke her arm, and I sat up with her all evening providing comfort and funny stories.

She didn’t remember it that way.

“You laughed at me and said I looked like a zombie with my arm sticking out in a cast.”

Well, I thought it was funny.

We looked at the street where I rode my bicycle. I used to take her with me sometimes, letting her perch on the crossbar.

“My butt was bruised from the rough ride,” she recalled.

Then, there was the swimming hole. On hot summer days the guys would ride a hot, dusty five miles into the country for a refreshing dip

in a rural stream.

“You never took me along,” she sighed. Of course not, it was all guys and we didn’t wear swim suits.

“Well, I used to see you …”

“Never mind,” I say. “That was different. We were family.”

Years later Sis and I found ourselves going to school together again. My college entry was delayed by military service, so we wound up attending the University of Missouri together. I used to drive her home on weekends.

“You had so much junk in your car that I had to sit in the back seat. What was that stuff anyway?”

“School things, camera gear, research materials.”

“It looked like junk. And it smelled.”

“That was my hunting boots.”

Like I said, we had a lot of common memories. She adores me, but this time, I think we’ll skip Missouri.

The Caring Center of Boone Co. will host its second annual charity gala Feb. 13. The Valentine’s Day-themed fundraiser fundraiser will begin at 6 p.m. at the Indiana Golf Club, 6905 S. 525 E. in Lebanon.

The nonprofit organization was established in the early 1980s to provide food and clothing to residents of Boone Co. Now The Caring Center offers a food pantry, clothes closet, educational programming, budgeting classes and more.

“Over the years, it’s gotten bigger and bigger. Thousands of Boone County residents rely on them,” said Dawn Such, event coordinator and owner of Save the Date Event Planning.

“It’s a not-for-profit community outreach that helps everyone get back on their feet after a difficult time.”

The gala will begin with a cocktail and appetizer hour during which guests can participate in a silent needs auction.

“People donate to buy a backpack kit full of school supplies or a Christmas kit, or to offset the cost,” Such said. “Basically, it’s an in-kind donation going to the bigger cause.”

Unique Zionsville home once housed cattle, a theater

By Kelsey Ligon • news@currentzionsville.com Stepping into the “Blue Barn” in the Raintree neighborhood in Zionsville is a bit like strolling through cover story the history of Zionsville and its residents.

The blue Louden dairy barn on the edge of Zionsville now belongs to Robert and Cynny Robinson, but

its past is long and varied.

The land that now includes the Raintree neighborhood originally belonged to David Hoover, who received a land grant in 1825. In 1901, James Hurst purchased five acres from Hoover’s family, and he constructed the barn that stands there now.

Today, a 26-foot high stone fireplace dominates the front room and draws the eye upward to the hipped roof, typical of a Louden-style barn. Along the ceiling runs the track and pulley originally used to store hay for the cows on the farm.

From the time the barn was built in 1925 until its renovation into a theater and then later a house, it was home to Hurst’s cattle. The original milk room is now the kitchen, and the base-

ment once housed 25 cows in cement stalls.

Chip McDowell used to live across the street and played there when he was a little boy in the 1960s.

“We’d play in the hayloft, and of course they had the cows that were in the basement,” he said.

According to McDowell, the Holstein cows, or milking cows, grazed on the land that is now the Raintree neighborhood.

Every day, they walked a cow path that extended to the end of the neighborhood.

In 1968, then-owner Carl Verplank rented the barn to the Zionsville theater group, the Off Main Street Players. The wrought iron stairs that are now in the garden were used by the theater group to allow playgoers access to balcony seating.

The area where the grand fireplace now stands was their stage for six years, and the huge beam that supported the stage came from a dismantled bridge in Broad Ripple. The structure of the barn suited the theater group well because the hipped roof and wood walls created ideal acoustics.

Jean Apple, one of the original founders of the Off Main Street Players, said they paid only one dollar each year to lease the barn. She, along with her husband and other performers, helped build the stage, piece together a curtain from fabric scraps, install dressing rooms and bathrooms and scrape the floors in the basement.

The first production at the barn drew celebrities from Indianapolis.

“They loved coming to the barn to see plays,” Apple said. “We took it as a challenge to be in this big barn. We thought it was a great privilege and had a lot of fun with it.”

In 1974, Ben Boleman purchased the land and built the first planned subdivision in Zionsville. The original land included Lions Park, which Boleman gifted to the town.

When Boleman began developing the land, he opted for minimal tree removal so it would retain its original essence. He also converted the cow path into Forest Boulevard and renovated the barn into a home.

When the Robinsons moved into the home in 1976, they added their own history to its walls. In the basement where the cows once stood, the Robinsons have displayed artwork from their time spent in Japan, Pakistan, Nepal and Grenada.

One of the most interesting pieces is a lid that Robert and Cynny found on the beach in Grenada. The lid is the top of a munitions crate sent from Hungary to the Hungarian Embassy in Cuba, bound for Grenada.

Further along the wall are Pakistani rubbings and Japanese ink paintings that Cynny created herself.

Cynny Robinson said she loves that her home is a historic yet welcoming space.

“In spite of the uniqueness of the Blue Barn, living within its four walls is comfortable, intimate, easy and fun,” she said.

It was difficult to let go, but the results of our decision couldn’t have worked out better. Now we find ourselves in the same boat with respect to our revenue operation. It Sonoga is as near and dear to us as editorial and our team are. But if we were honest with ourselves, and we are, it became apparent it was time to step back from that part of the business, too. We’re growing, and we believe we can grow a whole lot better by relinquishing the day-to-day management of sales to a proven professional. So that’s what we decided to do, and as of Feb. 1, Marka Sonoga is our first sales manager. She comes to us from El Dorado, Ark., where she was the advertising director, having previously served in a similar capacity in LaGrange, Ga. Prior to that, she was involved in ad sales for print and television in Youngstown, Ohio. Needless to say, we’re excited to have her aboard. We have tasked Marka with building a newer and improved sales culture here, a challenge she readily accepts. You’ll find her out in the community as often as in the office, because she wants to become immersed in all the goingson. Line of sight Commentary by Terry Anker As he often does, a good friend forwarded a quote via email designed to both break-up the day and to inspire a contemplative moment. In his book adapted from a series of wartime BBC interviews, “Mere Christianity,” C.S. Lewis said “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” The leading advocate at the time for a reasoned defense of the faith, Lewis brought attention to the universal longing of humankind.

Whether one conforms with the view that our lives on this Earth are inconsequential to the ones that will follow in heaven, most of us experience some sense of isolation and lack of belonging. Our relationships, our careers, and even our own self-worth, at times seem to elude satisfaction. Luckily, the sensation ebbs and flows for the majority. Yet for some, a constant pall of loneliness hangs on to them. We need more. We

need better. We need different! So, how do we satiate our desires without, if we follow Lewis’s argument, dying? Moreover, doesn’t a healthy sense of aspiration lift us all?

Certainly, we should find our center – our point on the horizon – and cling to it. What in our lives is it that matters most? My wise spouse once proclaimed, “You are most happy about tomorrow when you are a bit unhappy about today.” She is right. Some need to long for improvement today if they hope to achieve it tomorrow. It keeps the line of sight off of our shoes and out in front. Is it more important to know (or imagine) where we are going than to know (or imagine) where we are? Today may be filled with limitations, but tomorrow is abundant with opportunity. Isn’t that where we really belong?

I don’t know about most women, but I appreciate the occasional catcall. A hearty whistle from the construchumor tion site as I jog by. An enthusiastic honk from the landscape truck as I idle at a stoplight.

Even the mall vendor touting his perfume with, “Hey, beautiful lady!” At my age, I feel any unsolicited attention paid to a gal in sweatpants or a minivan is cause for celebration. Yay, me! I haven’t completely fallen apart!

But some guys take it too far. I was at the grocery store the other day and because, for once, I was child and husband free, I decided to use a holiday gift card at the Starbucks counter for a coffee. Unfortunately, a sign indicated that the Meijer employee-turned-barista had stepped away for a moment, and so I had nothing to do but stand there and wait. Enter a man to my left, sauntering out of produce and right up next to me. We’re the only two people in this section of the store, but he comes to rest less than a foot away.

Personal space was clearly not on his radar.

We exchanged pleasantries, and because I’m nice, I answered his questions about the order I would hopefully be placing soon. Then he starts dropping comments like, “This is the most enjoyable wait I’ve had in a while, next to a pretty woman like you,” and “You’re so nice, I hope we’re here a while longer.” I’m super uncomfortable, but I also really want a latte. And he’s still standing like 10 inches from me.

Finally the counter reopens. Again, my politeness sabotages by efforts at disinterest and forces me to engage my “admirer.”

I offer to let him order first since he is only getting a muffin. His reply is “No, because then I’d be denied the pleasure of your company.”

Had this been an elderly man and a harmless flirtation, I would have played right along. But actually being hit on by a middle-aged stranger at the coffee shop was too much. Just give me the impersonal catcalls from afar! Peace out.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The book is titled “Why Hoosiers Can’t Pronounce ‘Indianapolis.’” I skimmed through it and recalled interviewing the humor author, Dr. John Terhune, on my TV segment about 15 years ago.

John is a local chiropractor who spent part of his life boning up on how people, specifically Hoosiers, talk.

John’s contention is that Hoosiers have created and speak a “new global language” by combining words into nifty little linguistic packages. “People in other states also run words together occasionally,” he said, “but Hoosiers are way bedderdnat.” (better than that). Hoosiers reduce the number of syllables in a word, which gives them mordnenuf (more than enough) time to watch baskaball (basketball).

If you are innersted (interested), you can listen to the book’s accompanying CD that provides hunnerds (hundreds) of additional samples. But the most fun is John’s artful analysis of the variety of ways our city’s name is pronounced. Below are more than a dozen examples that John collected over the years.

Legends in Concert: It’s not the real thing but it’s close

By Zach Dunkin • news@currentinwestfield.com Sure, they’re not the real thing. But what do you think it would cost to see a concert featuring Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Whitney Houston, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner music and Bette Midler – even if you could get them all on the stage at one gathering?

Well, that’s not going to happen, but a lineup of entertainers impersonating that power quintet will do its best to come close to their look and sound when the “Legends in Concert” show headlines the Terrace Showroom at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson Feb. 19, 20 and 21.

“Legends in Concert’s reputation of only using the best of the best tribute artists is the main contributor of their legiti-

macy and longevity,” said Adam Kallick, Hoosier Park’s director of entertainment. “They have a variety of tribute artists where a venue like ours can change the show up by featuring a variety of genres and artists.”

What started in 1983 as a limited six-week engagement at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Legends in Concert has entertained more than 30 million fans worldwide at various venues such as Hoosier Park, which hosted its first Legends show last May. Legends claims to be the longestrunning tribute show in Vegas.

In addition to spot-on imitations, the 75-minute shows are known for their elaborate theatrical sets, costumes and special effects, including 3D multimedia and multimillion dollar, state-of-the-art lighting, laser and sound systems.

Veal scaloppine marsala

Commentary by Ceci Martinez

Tonight my husband is treating us with a very special dinner at home for Valentine’s Day. Veal Scaloppine Marsala, one of his favorite dishes, is a mouth-watering classic.

Notes: Proper cooking of scaloppine (Italian for “thin cut”) should produce a tender meat. Don’t cook scaloppine in sauce as it will toughen up. To stem shiitake mushrooms pinch off stem from its base.

Serves: 4 / Time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 1 pound veal scaloppine, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 red onion, finely chopped (about 3/4 cup), 6 oz. shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and cut in half, 1 1/2 cups medium sweet marsala wine, 3 tablespoons low-fat half-and-half, 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon of unbleached white flour, 1 tablespoon chopped rosemary Directions: Season the scaloppine on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat half olive oil in a nonstick skillet over high heat.

Quickly sear the scaloppine on both sides, about 30 seconds per side. Transfer veal to a platter. Heat the remaining oil in the skillet.

about 4 minutes. Add marsala, half-and-half, butter and flour; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and gently simmer until sauce is reduced and thick, 8 to 10 minutes. Taste seasoning, adding salt and pepper if necessary. Reinforce the marsala flavor by adding a fresh splash at the end. Transfer scaloppine to sauce, sprinkle with rosemary and serve at once.

Warm up with hot chocolate

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com For years, I have been a self-christened coffee fiend, coffee snob, beverages coffee addict – take your pick – and I didn’t waste

time with non-caffeinated beverages. Why drink something delicious when you could drink something that kick starts your day? But, I set my assumptions of those sinful non-caffeinated beverages aside as I toured Hamilton Co. searching for the best hot chocolate havens.

dark hot chocolate The Quirky Feather Confectionary, Carmel This little café opened quite recently, and I enjoyed their coffee so I chose to try their hot chocolate. They offered three varieties – dark, white, or tuxedo, which was a mix of the two. I chose dark, as I am not an overlysweet person. It was phenomenal. The dark chocolate was not overbearingly sweet, but not bitter like some darker chocolate beverages or snacks can be. And the best part?

The whipped cream is made in house with real whipping cream and not from a packet. It was a nice touch on a classic hot chocolate. A generous chocolate drizzle on the homemade whipped cream topped the hot chocolate off and rated it a 10/10 on my snobby scale.

Mama Bear’s Bakery and Café, Geist I don’t frequent the Geist side of Fishers very much, but I made a special trip out there after discovering that Mama Bear’s had some of the best hot chocolate in the state. If there was an award for this, I’m pretty sure it would be hanging on the ski lodge-esque café’s walls. Their hot chocolate was made with a toasted marshmallow syrup. It gave the smooth, creamy taste of the traditional hot chocolate topping which I preferred over the foaminess from actual melted marshmallows. The baristas also donned the top with cute latte art and a dash of cinnamon to customize the beverage. Craving whipped cream? They can top your hot chocolate with that instead of the milk designs.

Langton’s, Carmel This one is for the parents. Send your kids next door to a more family friendly café or bakery and cup your hands around this frozen delicacy. Crafted with Patron XO Incendio, Ghirardelli Chocolate Liqueur, Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur and topped with a fluffy whipped cream, this was a unique take on a spiked hot chocolate. Another twist? It’s actually served over ice. Yet, as you may guess, despite the iced beverage, Langton’s version of hot chocolate will do the job of warming you up even though it’s frozen. The Incendio gives the drink a little kick, but it’s not unbearable for the mild taste buds out there. Whether it’s a cold or warm day, treating yourself to this spiked nectar of the chocolate gods will warm your soul.

Tatum highlighted that in addition to Lovano and Scofield, Ben Street will perform bass and Bill Stewart will be on the drums.

Lovano, who hails from Cleveland, draws both past and present music into his performances. Tatum said that Scofield emerged in the late 1980s and plays his jazz guitar with a rock sounding touch.

“It’s a unique combination of new and old in his play and he can shift gears in a split second to draw upon whatever inspires him in the moment,” Tatum said of Lovano’s sax playing.

“With John Scofield, you have this rock sounding guitar in a jazz group so it definitely combines the elements of rock and jazz. He’s also a master improviser and innovative player.”

Although Scofield and Lovano have not passed through Carmel before, they have played together in the past. The quartet’s tour will serve as a reunion between the two musicians.

“As a jazz aficionado myself, these guys are truly master musicians,” Tatum said. “Anybody interested in great jazz and improvised music couldn’t do better than attending this concert. These guys are universally recognized for what they do.”

Teens and alcohol: Parental tips Commentary by Mary Ian McAteer, M.D. Teen alcohol use remains a serious problem. Peer pressure can be a strong influence for teenagers underage drinking in a time of life when “being an adult” takes on greater importance. With more teens dying each year in alcohol-related car accidents and evidence that suggests those who start drinking at an early age are more likely to misuse alcohol later in life, parents need to focus on ways they can help their children make good decisions about alcohol. This means starting the conversation early, modeling desired behavior, setting strict rules and staying involved.

Talk about it. Parents can begin talking with their children about drinking in an ageappropriate way as early as fourth or fifth grade. As children reach the teenage years, conversations should become more frequent and point to specific dangers, such as impaired judgement, slower reaction time and the risk of misuse or addiction.

Be a good role model. Parents are powerful role models. Children will learn a lot about drinking—responsibly or irresponsibly—by

watching their parents. Parents send messages to their children when they drink at a friend’s house and then drive home or come in the door after a hard day at work and immediately pour a glass of wine.

Establish firm, consistent rules about drinking. Underage drinking is illegal—even in private homes and even with adult supervision. To protect your family, rules about underage drinking in the home—or in a friend’s home—should be no different than the law. Lovingly communicate this to your children, and be sure they understand the consequences.

Stay involved. Know your teenager’s friends (and their parents, if possible). Pay attention to changes in attitude or behavior, including declining school performance or hesitancy to bring new friends to the house, which may signal alcohol use or other problems.

Reset balance with dog pose Commentary by Anne Johnson Namaste and Happy New Year! A common theme in yoga classes might be “wiping the slate clean.” With every breath, yoga something in your body or mind changes, allowing for more space or a fresh beginning. This is appropriate as we inhale into 2016 together. Now let me introduce a commonly recognized, foundation pose for the New Year: Downward-Facing Dog. If you have been lucky enough to have a dog in your life, you know they are loyal companions. A dog is a friend who will show you support, love and bask in your attention.

Dog pose in yoga can be thought of in the same way. It’s a basic “friend” pose that we can return to, to reset our balance and our breath. If you practice regularly, you know how grounding a few breaths stretching in downward dog can be.

Begin on your hands and knees in tabletop – knees under hips and wrists under shoulders. Tuck your toes under and begin to press your legs straight behind you – making an upside-down “V” with your body.

Try taking your dog for a walk by alternating knee bends. Lift one leg away from the ground for a three-legged dog variation – also

Yarn shop under new ownership

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com When she first walked into the Village Yarn Shop six years ago, Mary Vaughan didn’t expect she would someday be the update owner.

“Maybe in my wildest dreams I thought about owning a knit shop,” she said, “but I never considered starting one on my own. When (former owners) Harriet and Terry (McNabb) decided they wanted to retire and the opportunity arose, I said ‘Let’s do this!

Jump in, take the leap.’”

Vaughan had been working at the store part time and teaching classes. Over the holidays she had help from her daughter, a marketing student at IU’s Kelly School of Business, in creating an online presence before she officially took over the store Jan. 1.

Classes are offered nearly every day of the week, ranging from kids instruction to Building Blocks for Knitting Afghans to Basics and Beyond, where “anyone can come with their knitting and the instructor takes them to the next step,” Vaughan said.

“Half of them are full. These ladies come every week, whether they need help or not,” she said. “It’s a social gathering, but at the same time, they’re getting help with their knitting.”

Amongst colorful skeins of cotton, wool, baby yarns and sweater yarns are samples of knitted items sprinkled throughout the store.

“That’s how a lot of people are inspired to make something,” she said. She hopes to learn about and promote different charity organizations in the future so that “people who don’t have anybody to knit for have somebody to knit for.”

“This place is so special to me because my best friends are here,” she said.

Work Here Chief Operating Officer Mike Seidle, along with Chief Technology Officer Rick Wehrle, previously helped establish the National Labor Exchange, a job exchange network, in 2007. The motivation for moving into a more approachable job network was the result of a desire to address gaps in job listings for people with minimal college level education and below.

Gender-neutral ‘they’ comes into its own

If you caught my last column, you will recall my bemusement – and horror – at an emoji being chosen “Word of grammar Guy the Year” by Oxford Dictionaries. Fortunately, the American Dialect Society provided us with a much better choice: singular, genderneutral “they.”

This is a great choice for a host of reasons, but primarily because it recognizes the natural evolution of the word. This is how people talk. You want to use “they” as a singular, gender-neutral pronoun – and most of you probably do already. It saves us as speakers and writers from awkward “he/she” constructions. It also has the benefit, as the American Dialect Society notes, of respecting folks who make the conscious choice of “rejecting the traditional gender binary of he and she.”

I’ll let the American Dialect Society explain further: “The use of singular ‘they’ builds on centuries of usage, appearing in the work of writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen. In 2015, singular ‘they’ was embraced by the Washington Post style guide. Bill Walsh, copy editor for the Post, described it as ‘the only sensible solution to English’s lack of a genderneutral third-person singular personal pronoun.’”

As a grammar enthusiast – and someone who writes upward of a dozen news articles a day where the gender of a subject isn’t always known – I think it’s great. And, you know, at least it’s not an emoji.

This is a great choice for a host of reasons, but primarily because it recognizes the natural evolution of the word.

Palace of the Winds Commentary by Don Knebel Jaipur, in northwest India, is known today as the “Pink City.” Ironically, its most famous pink structure was designed in travel service of modesty.

Jaipur was a planned city, constructed between 1727 and 1733 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who became ruler of India’s Amber Kingdom at age 11. Unlike earlier Indian cities, Jaipur’s streets were laid out on a grid. The city, which became the capital of Jai Singh’s kingdom, was originally surrounded by a wall entered through one of seven gates.

In the eighteenth century, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Jai Singh, faced a dilemma. The ladies of his large harem were prohibited from being seen in public, at least without their faces covered. But they begged to be allowed to observe the festivities on the colorful street near the palace. In 1799, Pratap Singh found a solution. He erected a 50-foot-high screen of red and pink sandstone adjacent the palace. The baroque façade of the screen, containing 953 windows, suppos-

edly suggests the peacock feathers of the crown of Krishna, a popular Hindu deity. A honeycomb of rooms behind the small windows allows members of the harem to sit or stand unseen while gazing toward the street below. The upper three stories are just one room deep, while the two lower stories open onto courtyards. Ramps connect the five levels. The design and placement of the protruding windows facilitate the flow of cooling air throughout the structure, giving it the name “Hawa Mahal,” the “Palace of the Winds.”

Jaipur has been known as the Pink City since 1876, when English Prince Edward (later King Edward VII) made an official visit. In advance of his arrival, city officials emulated the famous Palace of the Winds by painting many of the city’s stucco buildings pink.
