zWORKS announces expansion

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Prompted by demand for more memberships than its current building can hold, zWORKS is expanding on Pine Street.

GROWTH The co-working space, which opened in 2015, has more than 200 members with nine on a wait list.

The new unnamed location will serve as an annex at 75 East Pine St. Eight meeting rooms will be configured — three dedicated to startup companies, one large conference room and four general meeting rooms. The conference and meeting rooms can be reserved electronically by zWORKS members for an hour, a day or a week.

“We find that is a real need for our members, that closed-door space for meetings, brainstorming, team-building,” zWORKS Executive Director Kate Swanson said. “There seemed to be a real demand.”

The dedicated offices for startups will be reserved on a monthly basis. The Cedar Street zWORKS location has two areas for startup businesses with demand for more, according to Swanson. One area was originally a conference room but was converted to office space for new businesses that require more room.

said. “It’s hard to predict these things.”

Swanson hopes the annex will be open by the end of February.

The remodel will be paid by the nonprofit zWORKS, which receives funding from membership and donors like Barnes & Thornburg and the Town of Zionsville.

“We’ve been conservative with our expenses knowing that we would hopefully be growing,” Swanson said. “We have the money that we’ve set aside for this but we depend a lot on donors.”

Swanson said that those on the wait list will be invited to become members soon.

“Now that we’ve signed the lease and we know that this is going to open very soon, we see relief in sight,” she said.

Carmel residents arrived en masse at the Monon Community Center Jan. 22 for a Board of Zoning Appeals meeting to voice AL SALAM concerns about a proposed Islamic Life Center on 5 acres at 14120 Shelborne Rd. in west Carmel where the Al Salam Foundation wants to build a mosque.

During a public hearing, more than 30 residents spoke to the board about their opposition to the mosque, which would need special use approval to be constructed in a residential zone. Speakers said that their only point of contention is the location, not the mosque itself.

Al Salam’s membership comes primarily from Carmel, Zionsville and Westfield.

The meeting room reached capacity at 300, forcing some attendees to wait outside without the chance to speak. In lieu of making a decision, the board ordered a continuance of the public hearing to allow those who weren’t able to get in a chance to speak. The public hearing will continue at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Monon Community Center (location subject to change).

Most residents who spoke live in Overbrook Farms and Long Ridge Estates. They cited

concerns about traffic congestion, pedestrian safety, excess noise and bright lights and project size. One resident said it’s like forcing a basketball into a golf hole.

Many residents said they chose this area of Carmel for the peace and quiet, and they do not want that disturbed by a commercial building.

“We have many commercial places out there to build this type of facility, not next door to my house or the other people’s homes here. We spent a lot of money. My property value is in great jeopardy,” said David Bidgood, owner of the 40 acres north of the proposed site.

Carmel City Council members Ron Carter and Laura Campbell also voiced their opposition to the proposal, urging the board to disregard the religious aspect and focus solely on finding an appropriate location for the center. The proposal is not expected to come before the city council.

On behalf of Al Salam Foundation, Project Coordinator Chris McCoy and Land Use Planner Kevin Buchheit said a traffic analysis will be conducted and presented to the board, and they will reach out to the school district to discuss the overlap of school bus and worship schedules.

DISPATCHES Jury duty scam — A scam involving the threat of arrest for missing jury duty is hitting Boone County. A victim answers the telephone and the caller says a warrant is being issued for not appearing for jury duty. The caller may give the name of a courthouse employee, a deputy, or a name similar to an employee. The victim is then told to pay money to avoid arrest. These calls are fake. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office does not make phone calls regarding missed jury duty.

Diabetes workshop — The Zionsville Lions Club will host a community informational meeting on diabetes from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 15, at the Zionsville Lions Clubhouse, 115 S. Elm St. The meeting will address what diabetes and prediabetes are, causes and risk factors of diabetes, and what steps to take if you have diabetes or prediabetes, among other key points. Matching grant awarded — Women’s Fund of Central Indiana recently awarded Boone County non-profit Youth & Family Health Network a $10,000 matching grant to help YFHN build its donor base and fund a recovery home for women. The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library is allowing cardholders to erase overdue book fees and help LIBRARY the community at the same time through the Food for Fines program.

From Feb. 1 to 20, the library will erase $1 in fines (up to $20) for every donated food item, household cleaning supply or toiletry.

Lost, damaged and collection fees will not be reduced by donations.

The donations will be sent to the Zionsville Food Pantry for distribution to those in need. The library will collect unopened, nonperishable items, including canned chicken, boxed dinner mixes, cereal, peanut butter and soups as well as bar soap, bathroom cleaner, paper towels, toothbrushes and more.

“It’s a great program, and we’re proud to offer it again this year,” said library spokeswoman Virginia Hilbert, adding that the library plans to continue the program each year.

Construction is under way on Third Street storm sewer improvements.

CONSTRUCTION Calumet Civil Contractors, Inc. is replacing aging and undersized storm sewers between Oak and Walnut streets.

Additionally, storm sewers will be replaced on Cedar Street between Second Street just north and south of Cedar Street. The project is expected to be complete in the spring.

Construction is under way on Fourth Street storm sewer improvements between Hawthorne and Pine streets. The project is expected to be complete in the spring. Temporary closures and limitations are expected throughout the project.

C.R. 400 South/425 South is closed between C.R. 650 East and 750 East as crews work on the 300 South/400 South connector project in east Whitestown. Two lanes are under construction. The county has not provided an estimated completion date.

Victim rescued from house fire

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A Whitestown man was in the hospital after firefighters rescued him from a fire in his home Jan. 24.

WHITESTOWN Whitestown Fire Dept. Chief Josh Westrich said crews responded to the home on CR 500 E at approximately 7:30 p.m. and quickly noticed an elderly man on the floor within 5 feet of the back door.

Firefighters pulled him from the house and began treatment as other firefighters fought the blaze. Responders transported the man to Eskenazi Health, Westrich said.

He did not know the man’s condition.

A dog found in the home did not survive the fire. Its body was discovered next to the elderly man.

Westrich said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the amount of damage is unknown. The home had heavy smoke damage throughout. The fire burned in the first floor living room area, kitchen and front porch, Westrich said.

“It was all contained relatively quickly,” Westrich said. “It all happened within the first few minutes.”

Groundhog 7 returns Feb. 4

The Groundhog 7 race benefiting the Zionsville Food Pantry will return to town Feb. 4. It will begin at 1 p.m. at ZiRACE onsville Community High School, 1000 Mulberry St. The entry fee is a donation of a canned food item. The Groundhog 7 is one of the main collection events for the food pantry each year.

“(The race is) a benefit to the running community as well as the community in general,” Race Director Jesse Davis said.

This year the 7-mile course will be run in reverse from previous years. Runners will be chip-timed and can purchase a T-shirt if they register in advance. Davis said the event is for “walkers and runners of all abilities.”

Veterans share stories to preserve history

The project is part of the Library of Congress efforts to preserve veterans’ military experiences.

The staff visited The Brace Hearth at Tudor Gardens in Zionsville Jan. 19, and several veterans from the senior living community took part.

Don Brace, 88, served on a Landing Craft Mechanized, which was convertRoeder ed into a radar detecting ship, in the U.S. Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the Korean War. Brace served from 1948 to 1952.

“We monitored the air traffic and sea traffic around New York City,” said Brace, who became a second class petty officer.

Brace, who went to school at Great Lakes (Ill.) Naval Station after boot camp, also was stationed across from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Originally from Chicago, he moved to Indianapolis to work for General Motors.

“I thought it would be good to let young people know my time in the service was a good experience, because I learned a lot in those four years between 18 and 21. I grew up,” Brace said.

Mark Morrison, 75, served on the U.S. Roosevelt in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967. Morrison served in

Fighter Squadron 14, the oldest active fighter squadron in the Navy, launching in 1919.

“I was drafted in 1964 and chose the Navy,” Morrison said. “After it was over, I’m glad I did it.”

Fred Roeder, 90, served in the Army during the Korean War. Roeder, who served from 1952 to 1954, was stationed with the occupation forces in Nuremberg, Germany.

Morrison “After basic training in California, we were stationed in Germany,” Roeder said. “There were a certain number of personnel set to go home, so they picked a number of us to go to the medics. We got trained Libby for four weeks to give shots and stuff like that. I didn’t do anything exciting except give shots to people.

Lot of people are allergic to seeing a needle and they get woozy. I’d say it was a good experience. I was fortunate I never had to go into fighting. When I was training, that’s the only time I had a rifle in my hand the whole time.”

Bob Libby, 92, served in the Navy at Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Libby, who served from 1943 to 1945, was drafted and enlisted after graduating from high school in Maine.

“It was pretty boring. We were sitting on an island for a couple of years,” Libby said.

“The (Japanese) were still on the island, but they had disbanded and gone into the mountains. We used to find them once in awhile in the chow lines because they were hungry, but there was no battle.”

An inventory of jobs to do Commentary by Ward Degler The bad thing about our recent burst of spring-like weather is that the rain washed away the snow. Bad because that exposed all the outdoor projects PLAIN TALK that I didn’t get finished last year.

There are those piles of leaves that didn’t get mulched or raked. And that stack of bricks. I was supposed to use most of them to finish the patio next to the koi pond.

That project now is in its third year.

The landscape beams intended as a border for the compost area remain under the maple tree. That project has a couple years under its belt, too, but to be fair I didn’t think about using them in the compost area until last summer. Honestly, I didn’t really have a plan for them. It’s just that someone was giving them away, and to not take them would have been criminal.

The large patch of weeds along the back fence is dead now, but they didn’t get cut down before cold weather arrived. I stick to the excuse that I couldn’t find my weed whacker, although I secretly suspected it was hiding behind the extra hose in the tool shed.

The back fence itself needs to be replaced. I kept it in good repair when we had a dog intent on escaping. Sadly, we no longer have a dog, so the fence has slid to the bottom of my to-do list.

What else awaits attention? We dove into winter with the gutters about 90 percent cleaned. They are all full again and will be among my first projects come spring. And there’s the bag of fertilizer that was supposed to get spread over the front lawn last fall. I think it rained that day and the job didn’t get done. Ditto the grass seed.

On a positive note, we did get the dead spruce and the leaning oak tree cut down and removed. Of course, we hired that work out, so I can’t take too much credit for it.

I did make the phone calls, though, and I wrote the check.

So, it’s not like I haven’t gotten anything done. And I can hardly wait to get going on everything else. As soon as it stops raining and snowing, of course.

Boone Village merchants, shoppers welcome Kroger to Zionsville

For many Zionsville residents and businesses, the opening of Kroger couldn’t come soon enough. The COVER STORY nearly 40,000-squarefoot store had been empty since Marsh closed its doors in July 2017.

During a Jan. 24 preview party, roughly 350 community leaders and business owners loudly applauded Kroger’s presence.

“As you know, Kroger has been trying to bring a store to Zionsville for decades,” said Pam Matthews, Kroger’s president of the Central Division.

Fourteen former Marsh employees will return to 5 Boone Village, including store manager Steve Carroll, who has been in the grocery business 40 years.

“It’s an honor to be back in this store,” Carroll said. “I just felt like part of the community.”

Carroll said customers will notice the service will stay the same, but in addition to upgraded checkout areas, Kroger brings other changes. The dairy sections have been moved to make restocking easier, and shelves are taller to accommodate excess product that is often stocked in back. A vegan section, chilled hard cider case, specialty cheese area and a sushi and salad bar have been added.

Stan Evans, president of RSE Realty Inc., which manages Boone Village, had a few nervous weeks not knowing whether there would be a paying tenant for the property after Marsh filed for bankruptcy. When Kroger completed the purchase and was obligated to pay rent, he began discussions to see how the property would be used.

“It fairly quickly became clear that (Kroger) intended to open it as a grocery store,” Evans said.

Many Boone Village tenants noticed an impact on their customers, in particular Leigh Ann Akard, owner of Akard True Value.

She said the day Marsh closed, foot traffic decreased.

Akard began brainstorming ways to attract people to Boone Village, including a Wednesday evening farmers market and store events.

Remodeling her hardware store a year earlier helped somewhat, but she said some of the new events made a difference.

“It’s always good to sharpen your skills and see if what you’re doing is working or not working,” she said.

Restaurants like Books and Brews and Amore felt the impact on their kitchens when an ingredient was needed. Amore owner Chris Simone noticed a gradual decrease in customers throughout the fall and winter but is confident that will change.

“This is going to be an injection of life into the strip center,” he said.

Bill Kern, owner of Kern Bro’s Shoes, hasn’t noticed an impact on his business but knows that his customers are tired of driving longer distances for certain items.

He also believes all of Boone Village will notice an increase in shoppers from the grocery.

“I think the more traffic we have, the better it is for all merchants,” he said.

Evans, who commended Akard’s efforts to bring shoppers to Boone Village, believes the new store impacts not only the tenants

but the entire community.

“Obviously, traffic is substantially down without a grocery store,” Evans said. “It affects that whole intersection.”

Kroger has been using retail space in Boone Village as a hiring center. Once it vacates that space, it will be occupied by a restaurant, Evans said, which will bring the shopping center to full capacity.

Last spring, Evans received approval for a new building on Boone Village property, which broke ground in early January. The project was delayed by discussions and plans with the tenant.

The new 8,000-square-foot property will be a medical building occupied by a single tenant whose identity is being kept secret.

Evans expects construction to be complete by the end of summer.

“This struck a decent balance for us in terms of not killing traffic and parking requirements,” Evans said.

Because part of the Boone Village parking lot is now blocked for construction, Evans is working with Kroger to make as many parking spaces as possible for customers.

“The first week or two will probably be a little crazy,” he said.

Kroger subsidiary Topvalco, Inc. purchased 11 former Marsh stores at a June 12,

Kroger representatives presented checks on Jan. 24 to local organizations that help feed people in need.

“Tough times can and do happen to some people,” said Eric Halvorson, Kroger’s manager of corporate affairs.

“Hunger relief is a primary commitment of Kroger. This is how we put food on the table for people who worry about finding their next meal.”

Gleaners Food Bank of Central Indiana received a check for $40,000. St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church and the Zionsville Food Pantry each received a check for $1,000 to supply food to Boone County residents in need.

“We need to participate in this actively,” said Rev. C. Davies Reed of St. Francis, who offered a challenge to his congregation to donate as much additional food as possible over the next two weeks. “It’s a great gift that we’ve been given.”

St. Francis leadership also voted to match the $1,000 to meet other needs at The Caring Center in Boone County, the beneficiary of food donations from the church.

Catherine Coscia with the Zionsville Food Pantry said that with the colder weather, the timing of the check was especially important.

“Right now people have to decide, ‘Do we want heat or to eat?’” Coscia said.

2017 auction. Included in those locations are the Boone Village property and 10679 N. Michigan Rd. The Boone Village Kroger is the third former Marsh store to open following the reopening of former Marshes in downtown Indianapolis and Muncie. The Michigan Road location will be the fifth overall former Marsh to reopen as a Kroger.

Marsh declared bankruptcy May 11, 2017. It sold 26 stores at auction and closed others.

The new Kroger will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily.

Commentary by Terry Anker In 1735, U.S. founding-era publisher Benjamin Franklin is quoted as having said in “Poor Richard’s Almanac,”: “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” By 1920, another American, Pulitzer-prize winner Carl Sandburg, took the adage to task, asserting, “Early to bed and early to rise and you never meet any prominent people.” One could assume his assertion is rooted in some evolved knowledge that only a fool would get up and work hard to find success.

There is always someone eager to give us cover for our choices. No matter the habit, vice or proclivity, there is an internet troll eager to reinforce the alternative position. Even as we destroy the existing foundations of our civil order, how does a reasonable person sift through the rubble?

Sure, we’re cool. Right? Stay up late. Sleep in. Miss school, if you’d like. Who cares?

Rules are meant to be broken. While we might argue that the world has moved in a direction where pajama pants are acceptable office attire, does this trend mean that people won’t work for a company with a dress code? Perhaps. But likewise, might said company attract those who are comfortable in trousers sporting something other than an elastic waistband? Maybe we should ask why we have offices at all. Can’t we just work from bed? Slippers are comfy.

Ours is an age of shifting standards. We challenge each basic rule as a pointless tradition. In an attempt to achieve laudable pluralism, we accept all ideologies as equivalent. But, is every approach to living deserving of equal standing, or do some achieve empirically better outcomes?

I recently celebrated another birthday, the big four-six. No party or hoopla, but I did have several moments HUMOR where I certainly felt the love.

My actual birthday fell on Friday, which meant the usual early morning carpool, work and then a Meijer run.

But when I finally got home, my family had taken to heart my one present request, to have the house clean. True, as soon as I left, the main floor disaster reigned, but the kitchen was dish-free and the living room smelled of lemon instead of dog poop, so I took it. They do love me!

Saturday I carved out two hours between color guard drop-off and dance pickup to spend some birthday cash at DSW before heading out to dinner with Doo and my siblings-in-law. And even though the restaurant ended up being a seafood place (which made ordering challenging since I vowed long ago never to eat ocean fish while in a land-locked state) and one SIL confirmed on the way home that she has a severe allergy to shellfish (a side street off Keystone, a stretch of U.S. 31, and our toilet will never be the same), it was a fun evening. Plus, I scored a free dessert!

My weekend culminated in a college basketball game in Kentucky. I’ll admit to shedding a few tears as I drove down through dreary fog alone (my youngest became ill and had to bail), but I scrounged up a lastminute date and enjoyed both the hot dogs and the win.

Not the typical celebratory weekend, but if this birthday is any indication of the year ahead, 46 will be a good one. Peace out.

Phyllis Baskerville passed away peacefully this past week. In my 35 years on Channel 8, she may have HUMOR been my favorite guest. She was not someone to be toyed with—or she was the perfect person to toy with. You decide.

I met Phyllis in 2002 after doing a live TV segment in Fortville. As I headed for my car, the spunky 75-year-old woman in her pickup truck approached me and asked me to follow her home.

Minutes later we arrived at a Pentecostal church. Entering the sanctuary was heavenly. Taking up every bit of available space were thousands of classic toys, all in mint condition, and many in the original boxes.

Memories flooded back as I saw board games, wind-up toys, lunchboxes and dolls I had not seen in 50 years.

When Phyllis’s husband developed Alzheimer’s, Phyllis was overwhelmed, as many caregivers are.

“I went to a support group meeting, but that wasn’t for me,” Phyllis said. “I didn’t need someone else’s problems. I needed something else.”

That something else began with a few dolls she had, which mushroomed into so many toys that they filled several rooms.

When her husband’s condition worsened, they moved from Florida to Indy to be close to her daughters.

That’s when she decided to open a museum.

Phyllis purchased the then-vacant Fortville church and continued to hunt for toys, assisted by her daughters who religiously took Phyllis to garage sales, antique shows and consignment shops.

Her museum’s normal tour lasted 90 minutes, with Phyllis pointing out her favorites.

“See that O.J. Simpson board game? See that Gund doll?” she said. “You’ll never see anything like that again.”

She often interrupted herself to demonstrate a punching nun or to set in motion Robby the Robot.

The museum is closed, and the future of Dolly Mama’s is still to be determined.

A mixed-use development is planned for Boone County west of I-65 north of County Road 650 in WhitesWHITESTOWN town. GreenParke, a $113 million commercial project on 169.2 acres on the west side of Indianapolis Road, is planned to have up to approximately 2 million square feet of industrial space and at least 37,500 square feet of office space.

“We’re excited to have a mixed-use development like this coming to town,” said Dax Norton, Whitestown town manager. “The office space, with the higher-paying jobs it brings, will be a very nice addition to add to the diversity of our job opportunities here in Whitestown.”

Carmel-based Lord Realty Holdings LLC and Indianapolis-based Strategic Capital Partners filed the plans for the development, which will include six office and commercial buildings. Plans also show two smaller buildings. Developers estimate the project could create more than 324 fulltime office jobs with an average salary of $50,000 and approximately 675 warehouse jobs with an annual salary of $31,200.

The office jobs being created, in particular, are very important to add as our community grows,” Norton said. “We want our residents to be able to work in our community, and the caliber of pay these office spaces will bring will allow that to happen. We’re thrilled with our retail and industrial growth, but we would definitely like to see more office space added as we grow.”

Construction on GreenParke is expected to start in June 2019 and take close to eight years to complete, with an estimated finish date of April 2027. The project will be developed in two phases.

Blatt and Fitzgerald were even roommates together in New York City after college.

“This is my first time working as a professional in Indianapolis,” said Blatt, whose mother, Serane Blatt, lives on the north side of Indianapolis. “Indianapolis is a special place for me and I always wanted to work here.”

Fitzgerald and Blatt had discussions about a directing opportunity at ATI, and their schedules finally meshed.

Blatt attended North Central for three years before graduating from high school in Chicago.

He then went to New York University as a theater major. He then toured as an actor in “Hair” for five years.

After working in regional theater as an actor for several years, Blatt got his master’s in fine arts in directing from the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York in 2016.

This is the first time Blatt has been involved in the production of this musical comedy, which is set in a middle school. However, young adults play the students.

Krall, Miller set Palladium shows editorial@youarecurrent.com The Center for the Performing Arts officials have announced that jazz star Diana Krall and comedian Dennis Miller will perform at The Palladium in Carmel.

Miller’s performance is set for 8 p.m. May 18. Miller is a standup comic, actor and talk show host who once served as anchor Miller on “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live.” His HBO show “Dennis Miller Live” won five Emmy Awards. Miller also wrote the New York Times bestsellers “The Rants,” “Ranting Again,” “I Rant, Therefore I Am” and “The Rant Zone.”

Pianist-singer Krall and her band are continuing a world tour in support of her album “Turn Up the Quiet.” The performance is set for 8 p.m. June 8. The album features interpretations of Great American Songbook classics from Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer. She has earned five Grammy Awards. Tickets start at $50.

Austen fan embraces role

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Emily Bohn is a huge fan of Jane Austen literature. So much so that portraying a character from an Austen novel has been a lifelong ambition.

THEATER Finally, she’s getting the chance to fulfill it.

Bohn, an Indianapolis resident who grew up in Carmel, portrays Elinor Dashwood in Civic Theatre’s production of “Sense and Sensibility,” based on the classic novel.

Published in 1811, “Sense and Sensibility” tells the story of the teenage Dashwood sisters, who become broke and “socially vulnerable” following the death of their father in 18th century England. The play runs Feb. 2 through Feb. 17 at Civic Theatre, 3 Center Green, Suite 300.

Bohn, who began acting at a young age in summer theater camps, has longed for the opportunity to perform in an Austen production.

“I’m drawn to the story for the fact that it’s Jane Austen,” said Bohn, a 2012 Park Tudor High School graduate who has a bachelor’s degree in theater from Butler University.

Simcha is a Hebrew word meaning gladness or joy.

The Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will present a cabaretDANCE style production of “SIMCHA” Feb. 3 to 18. It showcases Jewish culture and heritage and features a mix of Yiddish, Klezmer, Ladino and Israeli music.

The piece, choreographed by Artistic Director Gregory Hancock, was first performed in Latvia. The rehearsal space at The Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will be transformed into a black box theatre. Hancock said the cabaret-style setting gives audiences an up-close look at the performance.

“You can see the physicality more, hear the dancers breathing,” Hancock said.

The show also will feature a series of vignettes showcasing Jewish culture, including “1941,” a solo piece about a mother’s grief during the Holocaust performed by Taylar Green; “The Western Wall,” an abstract piece performed by the G2 dancers; and an untitled piece.

Heather King and Oybek Tashpulatov appeared in a previous version of “SIMCHA,” a repertoire piece choreographed by Gregory Hancock. The piece highlights Jewish culture and heritage. .

Hancock said “SIMCHA” is part of the company’s commitment to presenting a variety of different cultures that also highlight the sameness of the world.

Music students visit Broadway

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For a group of Carmel High School Applied Music students, a trip to New York was far more than just a MUSIC chance to see the sights.

The students saw four Broadway shows: “Waitress,” “Kinky Boots,” “Come From Away” and “Once on This Island.” The students visited Radio City Music Hall and the 9/11 Museum. They attended backstage workshops as well.

“I absolutely loved the workshops we did with the Broadway performers,” junior Laney McNamar said. “We learned a dance from ‘Once on This Island,’ and once we had the steps down, the cast member we were working with pulled me up to do it alone with him, which was very cool. I also got the chance to sing a solo in front of them, which was very helpful because I received feedback on what to improve.”

Senior Hannah Paul and junior Jessy Voris found the workshop experience to be special as well.

level choreography and hear, on a more personal level, about a day in the life of Broadway performers,” said Paul, who enjoyed hearing the experiences of the actors.

Voris said she valued the opportunity to get advice from actors and “hear about their journey to Broadway, which is very inspiring for any young person considering going into this business.”

Paul, Voris and McNamar all agreed “Once on This Island” was their favorite of the four shows.

Blueprint for Improvement: Backyard fit for entertainment Commentary by Larry Greene

Background Info: This home in Lebanon was built in the 1980s. The interior was perfect for the homeowners, but the exterior of the home had a small deck and a large yard that was being underutilized.

The overall goal was to create a larger space for the family to entertain, utilizing more of the homeowners’ backyard and making it easy for them to maintain.

1. The biggest transformation came from removing the deck and a large tree in the backyard, which created enough space to add a large, stamped-concrete patio that utilized more of the backyard.

2. Having the extra space on the large patio allowed the homeowners to add more outdoor furniture without compromising space.

3. Building a pavilion structure with a ceiling fan created a comfortable shaded area for entertaining.

4. The pavilion also created a space for the homeowners to add a portable fire pit.

5. Light fixtures were added to the structure so it could be enjoyed in the evening hours.

In 2014, kale was all the rage at the local farmers market. 2016 brought us an avocado fad, which GRAMMAR GUY elevated toast prices among the hipster millennial community. As a professional grammarian and amateur vegetable trend forecaster, take this hot tip: You’re going to want to put all your summer stock in Brussels sprouts.

Before you object to this up-and-coming veggie trend based on how your mom used to make Brussels sprouts (boiled to oblivion), I’m told there are now more interesting and tasty ways to prepare these cute little cabbages (roasted with sea salt and olive oil, for one).

And it’s spelled Brussels sprouts, not brussel sprouts. You could theoretically have one Brussels sprout, I suppose. Even though they originated in the Mediterranean region, Brussels sprouts gained popularity across Europe, especially in Belgium, where they received their geographical moniker. And yes, I capitalized the “b” in Brussels sprouts.

For that matter, what about the “f” in

French toast? French fries certainly don’t always get the capital treatment. In the United Nations of foods, there’s not much capitalization consistency. Will the delegation from Switzerland be offended if Swiss cheese isn’t capitalized?

One argument against capitalizing any noun phrase containing a place word is that you should call Brussels sprouts “Brussels sprouts” with a capital “b” if (and only if) they did, indeed, originate from the city of Brussels. If they didn’t actually hail from the geographical region, argues the Chicago Manual of Style, you don’t need to capitalize them.

I’m going to have to disagree with the “never capitalize” camp. I’ve never seen baked Alaska with a lowercase “a,” even though the flambéd dessert most likely wasn’t sourced and shipped from our 49th state. The same rule applies to Swiss chard, Dijon mustard, Gorgonzola cheese, Canadian bacon and the Cuban sandwich.

Sizing up Mount of Temptation Commentary by Don Knebel A monastery suspended from the side of a mountain near Jericho memorializes a famous story about Jesus. It also suggests that perhaps the story should TRAVEL not be taken too literally.

According to the New Testament, after Jesus had been baptized in the Jordan River he went into the desert to meditate. After 40 days of fasting, the devil took him to an “exceedingly high mountain,” where he could see all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor, and offered him control of those kingdoms if Jesus became a devil worshipper. Jesus refused.

As early as the first century, Christian hermits began living in a network of about 40 natural caves on the side of a 1,200-foot mountain northwest of Jericho. In about 326 A.D., after Emperor Constantine had declared that Christianity was legal in the Roman Empire, he sent his mother Helena to identify sites mentioned in the Bible.

She concluded that the mountain with the caves was where the devil had tempted

Jesus. Based on Helena’s identification, fourth century monks built a monastery on the mountain near the ruins of a second century B.C. fortress erected by the Maccabees. The monastery was destroyed in 614 when Persia took control of the area from the Byzantine Empire. When the Crusaders captured the area in 1099, they erected two churches near caves, by then associated with the temptation of Jesus. In 1895, a Greek Orthodox religious order erected a cantilevered monastery half way up the side of the mountain, now known as the Mount of Temptation.

Since 1998, a cable car has run from the ruins of the ancient city of Jericho to the monastery, where visitors can eat lunch and get a spectacular view of the Jordan River Valley, the Dead Sea and the mountains of Moab in nearby Jordan.
