County officials advance pathway connections

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com In recent years, connecting pathways across Zionsville and greater Boone County has been a priority for BIG 4 TRAIL residents and authorities.

Although progress on the Big 4 Trail, a historic-railway-turned-trail, has stalled along the way due to issues with land acquisition and funding, county officials now have a plan to move forward with at least one section.

At a Jan. 22 Boone County Board of Commissioners meeting, HWC Engineering Director of Planning Cory Whitesell presented the findings from a Nov. 13 trail summit, hosted by the Boone County Trail Committee.

The November summit included an open discussion between community members and Boone County officials about the future expansion of the Big 4 Trail and its connection between Zionsville, Whitestown, Lebanon and Thorntown. Many in attendance spoke in favor of the path following the historic Big Four Railroad corridor.

Whitesell, who specializes in complex planning projects that involve coordination between government, the community and various stakeholders, said the committee found it best to follow the original rail corridor for the

According to Whitesell, there are five reasons the rail options works best; safety, cost, low property impact, aesthetics and history.

“This (route) avoids drive crossings and keeps the pathway separated from county roads,” Whitesell said. “It is the lowest cost option available.”

By following the former railroad path, only six property owners will be directly affected by the trail. Other proposed options showed the trail crossing as many as 32 properties.

“One of the things we heard at the trail summit was this (would be) the most pleasant route to walk,” Whitesell said.

He also said local history was a factor because President Abraham Lincoln rode the railway to his inauguration. His body also traveled on the Big Four en route his funeral.

The next step is to begin the process of applications through the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources and secure funding. Then, the community will pursue acquisition of the properties from the owners, with whom they have already been in discussions.

“We’re excited to move forward,” Whitesell said. “It starts by asking for input and going through this slowly. We (wanted to) get the right route first and then take the next steps.”

ZCHS leaders investigate Nazi salute photo

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com A social media image depicting Zionsville Community High School students appearing to give the Nazi salute has gone viral. The photo was taken at the high school RACISM and posted to Instagram.

ZCHS officials are investigating the photo. Zionsville Community Schools Supt. Scott Robison sent an email addressing the issue to parents on the evening of Jan. 17.

“This evening I have been made aware of a photograph taken at Zionsville Community High School in which 10 of the 14 students pictured appear to be performing a Nazi salute,”

Robison said in the email.

The picture, in which several students are wearing jerseys of a non-school affiliated club soccer team, was posted on Instagram and sent to Robison by a teacher, who received it from a concerned student.

“The photograph is sickening to me,” Robison said. “It is, of course, beyond offensive to students, staff, parents, extended family members and to an inestimable number of people in the wider world where it will forever reside because of social media’s ubiquity.

The image simultaneously misrepresents and damages the school community where thoughtful and principled citizens abound.”

ZCHS officials declined to give an update on the students’ punishment.

Town awards grant money

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Earlier this month, the Town of Zionsville awarded Habitat for Humanity ReStore and SullivanMunce Cultural Center grant money from Zionsville’s Charitable FUNDING Organizations Fund.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore received $4,674.98 from the town for online scheduling software, a store laptop and a tablet for the driver.

The software, Vonigo, features online scheduling for donors, allowing them to choose the date and time for dropping off their item. It also manages donation pickups, using a mapping tool that creates the most efficient route for the ReStore drivers.

Since opening in December 2018, ReStore employees have been trying to keep up with the demand of residents calling in to schedule donation pickups. The new software not only manages the donation process, but

also the lifecycle of the item in the store.

“It will benefit both the donor and us,” said Amy Hartwig, volunteer coordinator and development director at HFHBC. The town also awarded SullivanMunce Cultural Center $6,000 for an interior renovation to provide a wheelchair-accessible restroom. Because the existing restrooms were built prior to mandated Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, the door and hallway to the restrooms cannot accommodate a wheelchair.

The renovations are scheduled to be completed this year and will create a separate but adjacent family friendly unisex restroom that meets ADA requirements.

The museum also received $5,432.50 in previous grant money from the Boone REMC Community Fund to provide half of the funds needed for the project.

More than 10,000 people visit SullivanMunce each year for events, exhibitions, research, and other activities.

The Zionsville Plan Commission met Jan. 22 at Zionsville Town Hall to discuss proposed building updates.

What happened: McDonald’s franchise owner John Liapes submitted plans to update the Boone Village McDonald’s.

What it means: The restaurant, built in 1993, was purchased by Liapes and his wife, Mary Liapes, in 2014. In 2015, the new owners submitted plans for a change of exterior color.

The building was updated to a neutral gray color palette. Now, Liapes’ design team wants to further modernize the building. The building will keep its gray color scheme, and more bricks will be added to reflect the bricks on Zionsville’s Town Hall, which faces the McDonald’s. The siding will be replaced with more durable Hardieplank. Liapes also wants to add outdoor aesthetic elements like a trellis. “McDonald’s is on a large push to upgrade and modernize all around,” Liapes said. “This is a nice representation of what McDonald’s is looking for in the future. It should be a good contributor to the city of Zionsville.”

The commission approved the plans with a unanimous 6-0 vote.

What happened: John Tousley, an attorney and Zionsville resident since 1978, asked the commission to review the town’s practice of giving notice before important events.

What it means: Tousley, a former president of Zionsville Village Residents Association, said he noticed the provisions concerning notifying neighbors about public hearings, meetings and construction are different than what he was previously accustomed to in Zionsville.

Tousley asked for more transparency from the town officials, including giving notice to homeowners associations and neighborhood associations. He also asked for more visible signage and an enhanced use of technology. “I’d like to see email being used to send notice out,” Tousley said. Frequently, he said construction has already started by the time a person receives notice by mail. “Notice (should) be given 23 days prior to hearing instead of 10 days,” Tousley said.

“People don’t have time to react.”

What’s next: Wayne DeLong, director of Planning and Economic Development for the Town of Zionsville, said he would evaluate ordinances focusing on the rules for giving notice.

ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN Duke Energy is working with CONSTRUCTION the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department to remove undesirable and invasive woody vegetation on the Bloor Road Rail Trail Overpass, between Legion Park and Jennings Field.

Bradford pear and honeysuckle, both invasive species as defined by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, are targeted for removal. Every effort will be made to preserve existing woody species that will revegetate and thrive in the cut areas. Work was scheduled to begin on or around Jan. 25 and will take approximately two days to complete. Nighttime operations requiring lane closures began earlier this month to repair a damaged bridge beam on I-465 over I-865 on the northwest side of Indianapolis in Boone County. Rieth Riley is the state’s prime contractor for this $354,512.82 bridge repair contract that calls for heatstraightening the facia steel beam under the left lane of southbound I-465 where it overpasses I-865. This will require closing I-465’s northbound ramp to westbound I-865 and detouring westbound motorists via eastbound I-465 to U.S. Highway 421/ Michigan Road where they will reverse direction to westbound I-465. In addition, the southbound left lane of I-465 and a single thru-lane on I-865 will be closed to facilitate repairs.

Weeknight restrictions will be in effect between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Should work be scheduled through weekends, closures will begin at 9 p.m. Fridays and continue through 6 a.m. Mondays.

I-465 has a traffic count of 42,240 vehicles per day. I-865’s traffic count is 20,238 vehicles per day.

WESTFIELD As part of a federally funded project to improve safety, lighting will be added to 20 intersections throughout the project, which will be complete in February. No road closures have been announced.

Crews will be trimming trees along the city’s trails for the next few weeks. No closures are expected.

Citizens Energy Group is constructing a new sanitary lift station south of Mill Street to accommodate for the sanitary needs of future downtown Westfield development. Damaged parts of the trail also will be repaired during this project. The trail is open, but work will be continued intermittently. Final patching will be complete this spring.

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com The Community Foundation of Boone County was awarded a $1 million matching grant in early January from Lilly EndowENDOWMENT ment, Inc. Eligible community foundations were invited to apply for grants ranging from $500,000 to $4 million based on the population of the counties the foundations serve.

“The grants are designed to encourage residents and others to give generously to grow community foundation endowments and to fund local community needs,” said Kristi Reynolds, president and CEO of CFBC. “Due to the size of Boone County, we were able to request a grant of up to $1 million.”

The Foundation applied for the grant in November 2018 and received approval the following month.

The CFBC currently has just above $22 million in endowed investment funds, according to Reynolds. It has 203 funds established by donors, businesses and organizations to support students or charitable work in the county.

“To encourage residents and others to support unrestricted endowments in local communities, the endowment will provide $2 for every $1 donated to our Community Impact Fund,” Reynolds

said. “This is the fund used to support local granting to nonprofits serving Boone County and to address the most pressing needs locally. All gifts, large and small, will be essentially tripled to unrestricted funds.”

Reynolds said if the community can raise $1 million, Lilly Endowment will match it in various funds that would increase the local endowment impact by $2 million.

“An additional $2 million in endowment funds means at least $80,000 more a year, every year, forever, to grant and support students and local needs,” Reynolds said. “When you think about what those dollars can do every year for generations to come, the impact is immeasurable.”

The endowment will award an additional $100,000 unrestricted grant if the CFBC achieves full support from board members through June 2020.

“It’s too soon to know what they will decide how those dollars will be used, but our mission is to unite people, organizations and philanthropy to create a thriving community for all,” Reynolds said. “Our sole purpose is to help Boone County thrive.”

The CFBC was created in 1991 with $15,000 in startup gifts and a matching grant from Lilly Endowment.

Women Inspiring Women kicks off 2019 quarterly series

The theme was “Goal Setting for the Best You in 2019” and featured Caitlin Alderling, a trainer and consultant at the HR company Purple Ink. The group discussed the impact of setting goals and ways to prioritize, plan and reduce procrastination.

The chamber created Women Inspiring Women in 2018 to facilitate personal and professional development opportunities to advance women in Boone County. The events are held quarterly and include breakfast and a presentation.

Sleeping away winter Commentary by Ward Degler I was probably born to live in the tropics.

You know, where the temperature never gets below 70 degrees.

PLAIN TALK I’m always cold, even on balmy days. I did, however, learn how to deal with extreme cold many years ago.

I was in the Army and we were on maneuvers out in the German boonies in January. As a lowly private, I got the privilege of standing road guard in the middle of the night, directing trucks through a small, sleeping village. It was 10 degrees and spitting snow.

This was nothing unusual. Army privates get lots of yucky assignments. What was tough was we were a lowly medical unit and somehow didn’t qualify for winter clothing. A light jacket and a sweater were all I had to keep from freezing solid for five unbearable hours.

My feet turned numb, and I spent the last two hours stomping on the frozen ground to keep from falling over. When the last truck of the convoy stopped to pick me up, they had to help me into the truck.

The guys in the truck were infantry soldiers dressed in the latest cold-weather gear and buried in Arctic sleeping bags.

“Where’s your cold-weather gear?” they

asked.

“Don’t have any,” I muttered through chattering teeth.

They looked at my Red Cross armband and understood. Medics work in warm hospitals. They don’t need winter duds.

Somewhere in that truck was an extra sleeping bag. They told me to crawl in and zip up. I had never felt anything so warm and comforting. In five minutes I was sound asleep. I didn’t wake up until we arrived at our bivouac location several hours later.

Somehow, I survived that winter, and when I returned to civilian life, I spent a lot of money on long johns, insulated boots, down-filled comforters and, at the top of the list, a cold-weather sleeping bag. Later, when I lived in Minnesota, I never let that sleeping bag out of my sight. I think I even took it in the car with me.

And here we are, back to 10-degree weather again. I no longer have that sleeping bag, but our bed is deep with ultra-warm covers.

And until the temperature gets back to sane levels, that’s where you’ll find me.

By Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com Nearly five years after the loss of their son, a Zionsville family was honored at the Jan. 1 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., for their contributions to the orCOVER STORY gan donation cause.

Janice Langford and Bryan Langford’s world was tragically altered in May 2014 when their son, Justin Langford, died at age 23 in an auto accident. Justin was driving a flatbed truck during performance calibration activities for his employer, Allison Transmission, while on a work trip in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Justin Langford “He only lived 23 years,” Janice said. “But we had a great 23 years.”

Although his death was heartbreaking for his family and friends, Justin’s loved ones have found hope and meaning by ensuring that his legacy lives on. As an organ donor, Justin posthumously saved the lives of five people, including a 2-year-old boy. He also enhanced more than 22 lives through his tissue and cornea donation.

The Langford legacy

To honor the memory of their son and give positive meaning to a difficult loss, the Langfords have contributed more than 1,500 hours of volunteer service to advance the cause of donation and transplantation.

Because of Justin’s heroic donation and his family’s tireless efforts to promote organ donation, Indiana Donor Network selected Justin to be featured on the Donate Life Rose Parade float.

“I think it was based on our volunteer hours, the story we have to share as well as our commitment and dedication to the cause,” Janice said.

The Langfords also created Justin’s Run4Hope in 2016 to inspire hope and well-being. Proceeds from the 4-mile walk/ run, 1-mile walk and half-mile kids dash go to the Justin David Langford Memorial Fund for a scholarship at Vanderbilt University and Zionsville Community High School.

in 2013. His younger brother, Kyle, also is a Vanderbilt graduate now in his second year of medical school.

Floating along

Donate Life Indiana is the local chapter for Donate Life, which has participated in the Rose Parade every year since 2004 by creating a float to honor donors.

In 2004, the continuing growth of the United States organ transplant waiting list motivated the donation and transplantation community to find creative ways to inspire people to be organ and tissue donors, according to a 2005 journal of the European Transplant Coordinators Organization.

“Among such efforts, perhaps the most innovative and far-reaching is the entry of a donation/transplantationthemed float in the world-famous Tournament of Roses Parade,” the journal reads.

Each year, a deceased organ donor is selected as the float’s honoree, and a floragraph is created in their likeness.

The floragraph is made of natural materials such as flowers, seeds and spices. The portrait is made to near completion, then sent to the family to add the finishing touches.

Indiana Donor Network and Donate Life Indiana, two separate nonprofits but connected organizations, play a large role in Indiana organ donations and transplants. Donate Life Indiana manages the Indiana donor registry, while Indiana Donor Network facilitates the clinical donation and trans-

plantation process for most of the state of Indiana.

In this year’s parade, the Donate Life float won awards for Most Outstanding and Dramatic Impact.

“In 2018, Hoosier donors saved 635 lives through organ donation, and more than 1,200 Hoosiers also gave the gift of tissue donation,’ said Mark Back, Indiana Donor Network media relations and communications specialist.

According to Back, there are 1,300 Hoosiers on the national transplant waiting list, which has an estimated total 114,000 people. One person is added to the list every 10 minutes.

A lasting impact

Although they miss their son, the Langfords have been inspired by the lives he saved.

While traveling with the floragraph, they had the opportunity to meet three of Justin’s five major organ recipients: Alex Taylor, a kidney recipient who was 2 years old at the time of the transplant; Michael Valdez, a kidney and pancreas recipient; and Fernando Zazueta, the heart recipient. “(There was an) emotional moment of hearing Justin’s heart in Fernando, beating and giving hope,” Bryan said.

The couple said providing support to others is one major basis for their daily actions. They intentionally find ways to give back to the community and to those who also have lost a child.

“We have our Allison Transmission family, our Vanderbilt family and our New Hope Christian Church family,” Janice said. “We have received so much support from the Zionsville community in general.”

Justin’s former co-workers at Allison Transmission, some of whom were on-scene at the accident and stayed with Justin and his family through his several-day hospital stay, still go out for lunch on his birthday each year. On Jan. 24, he would have been 28 years old.

“Justin lived life to the fullest. He was incredible. He touched a lot of lives. We’re just thankful that God gave us the opportunity to be his parents,” Bryan said.

Commentary by Terry Anker Many of us break away from the gray Indiana winter days looking for warmer clime and a few rays of sun. Some head to the Caribbean, others to the great American Southwest. But the majority find their way to the various resorts and barrier islands along the south coast of Florida. The populations swell, seasonally, with all manner of pasty-pale northerners from Manitoba to Tennessee, all seeking a few days of beach time to scrub the accumulated barnacles from too many short and dreary days.

Even then, we arrive, carrying still our winter pounds – too soon from the holidays and too shut-in by the weather to have shed them – even as we lug our suitcases filled with bright, cool clothing waiting since September to be worn again.

But alongside has come to be this new breed of Floridite — the “beautiful person.” They have decamped the notion of ever returning to the homeland that spawned them, instead satisfied, buoyed by trust-funds or fortune, to live the vacation life year-round. The day consists of various forms of newly discovered exercise and detoxification. Afternoon brings social media and a consensus with others of their ilk on where the clump will congeal for dinner and entertainment that night and overnight.

To meet the test, the restaurants and clubs must only admit “beautiful people” (and the very, very rich).

Even better if the venue allows for an appropriately distant place for the regular folks to gawk and applaud such that the “beauties” can feign an inconvenience at it all. Still, the spontaneous choreography is beautiful and tragic. It may be time for a lemongrass-avocado rub – or is that a toast?

Highs and lows of 47 Commentary by Danielle Wilson I celebrated a birthday over the weekend, and as I reflect on the day itself, I’m trying to decide whether it was good HUMOR or bad.

On the surface, I definitely deserve a do-over. To most people, it will “sound” terrible. But if I’d been able to script my most perfect of days, I’m not sure it would have been too far off what actually transpired.

For starters, I knew my 47th would be quiet. Doo took three of our four kids to attempt skiing in Michigan, leaving me with our youngest, who had school commitments. I abhor being cold and potential death by arboreal collision, so I was more than happy to stay behind. Besides, I gained a freebie trip to sunny Florida come February as part of the deal. Win-win!

What I didn’t count on was coming down with a mild sinus thingy, leaving me tired and headachy. And though I thought my

I’ve-been-smoking-Marlboros-since-middleschool voice was kind of sexy, the resulting upper lip cold sore was decidedly unattractive. My celebratory mini-shopping spree would have to wait. So, too, would my highly anticipated afternoon at Regal Cinemas with Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Deteriorating road conditions from an ice storm made leaving the house just plain stupid. Disappointing, for sure, because I’d also wanted to try a new method of soup smuggling.

I spent most of my birthday sick and trapped indoors. But I enjoyed a comfy couch by a fire, Netflix at my disposal and plenty of calls and texts from family. Not exactly what I had planned, but relaxing, nonetheless. Chalk “47” up as a good birthday!

Editor, The governor and our legislature have already invested in programs that are delivering more (than) 100 times the returns to Hoosiers. Prior efforts of Gov. Eric Holcomb and the Indiana General Assembly to invest in our workforce have already positively impacted the lives of many Hoosiers while building upon a solid foundation for economic growth. The 2019 General Assembly has the opportunity to leverage this to achieve exponential growth for Indiana.

Tens of thousands of jobs remain unfilled today in Indiana, with a projection of more than 65,000 open tech jobs over the next decade. Thus far, Workforce Ready Grants have already benefitted more than 13,000 Hoosiers and Employer Training Grants.

Funded under the governor’s program, Eleven Fifty Academy, a nonprofit organization, has produced 30-plus graduates with a 93 percent graduation rate, an 81 percent job placement and an average starting salary of $51,000. If Eleven Fifty Academy is fully enabled to train 3,000-plus Hoosiers the next two years, it will create $62.5 million in Hoosier income in the first year.

The governor and IGA will have the opportunity in 2019 to continue taking Indiana to the “next level” for all Hoosiers, present and future. My advice: Leverage the things that are working and invest tenfold, for this is how we move the needle.

Established business Carmel Orthodontics recently expanded to Zionsville with an office at 6857 GRAND OPENING West Stonegate Dr., Suite B. The practice has a more than 40-year history, and a Zionsville native, Dr. Sarah Baxter, is leading the charge to provide high-quality orthodontics.

The Carmel practice opened in 1972. Dr. Ronald Miller, now the owner, joined in 1995.

Miller opened the Stonegate practice with Baxter, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School and University of Michigan Dental School.

“When I first met Dr. Miller, we shared the dream of expanding the practice and starting something new,” Baxter said. “He had considered Zionsville because it’s a neighboring town. I was from Zionsville and I was interested in having a location here.”

Miller is an early adopter of technological advances in the industry. Carmel Orthodontics was quick to begin using digital mouth impressions. Miller also has used Invisalign products at his practice for 14 years.

Daniels takes on challenge of iconic ‘Grease’ role at Beef & Boards

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Sarah Daniels regards performing as Sandy Dumbrowski in the musical “Grease” a unique challenge because THEATER the role is so iconic.

“Olivia Newton-John was so perfect in the film, and that performance is what sticks in people’s memory, but the (Broadway) musical came before the (1978) movie, so as an actor that is where I dive in,” Daniels said. “Sandy is brought to life from the text, the way she communicates with others, her relationships, etc. Sandy has definitely been one of my favorite roles to play, up there with Sophie in ‘Mamma Mia’ and Elle Woods in ‘Legally Blonde.’

“She is very assured and knows her boundaries as well as her morals. She is a little sassier in the musical than she is in the movie, and that’s what grounds her transformation in the end.”

Daniels will perform in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “Grease” Feb. 7 through March 31. Daniels and Kaleb Lankford, who plays Danny Zuko, are making their Beef & Boards debuts.

Daniels has long been a fan of the musical.

“I secretly always wanted to be a Pink Lady,” she said. “I remember as a kid watching the film and being completely shocked when Sandy came out at the end, completely transformed, and thinking, ‘Wow, I could never do that.’ The music is still so memorable to this day. It’s hard not to fall in love with this story and these unique characters.”

Daniels said she understands why the story still resonates with audiences. “‘Grease’ is a story about discovery and finding yourself. At its core, I think it’s something people can relate to at any age,” said Daniels, whose husband is actor Skye Scott.

Daniels was an alternate to play Sandy in a Toronto production before getting the role.

“I was very lucky in that I ended up get-

ting to rehearse with the cast as Sandy for the first two weeks,” she said. “(Original cast member) Janel Parrish was doing press for her new TV show and couldn’t be at rehearsals. As an alternate, you typically only get the luxury of one run-through with the cast and can be thrown in any time. I ended up going on the first weekend as Sandy, and I’m so thankful I had the first few weeks with the cast because it was a whirlwind of quick changes and technical aspects I hadn’t experienced yet.

This version of ‘Grease’ is a little different than the version I did in Toronto, so I’m very excited to explore those differences with this cast and creative team.”

In addition to acting, Daniels is an active gamer. She livestreams on Twitch.tv and has more than 35,000 followers.

“Gaming has always been a huge staple in my life,” Daniels said. “I started playing very young, starting on the Super Nin-

tendo and the Sega Genesis. Growing up, I was always balancing gaming and performing. As a 12-year-old on the national tour of ‘Bear in the Big Blue House Live,’ I traveled with a PlayStation that had its own battery and a fold-up LCD screen, so I could game on the go. I only play noncompetitive modes, player versus environment, as opposed to player versus player, such as RPGs (role-playing games) and first-person shooters. People tune into my channel to watch me play through games and make witty commentary as well as play with me and chill out and chat with others who have the same things in common. I never thought I could turn gaming into a career. I’m thankful for my incredible viewers every day. I would be nothing without their support.”

The swing-era trio’s distinctive close harmonies sold an estimated 75 to 100 million records, making them the world’s top-selling pop artists until the arrival of The Beatles.

The exhibit includes interactive multimedia touchscreens that enable visitors to experience music and video of the group as well as the performers who inspired them and the vocal groups they influenced. A traveling version of the exhibit is available free of charge for display by schools, libraries and other community organizations.

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES WITH PEACH-OLIVE JAM Recipe courtesy of the California Olive Committee Ingredients: 1 teaspoon olive oil, 3 pounds pork shoulder roast, 4 cloves garlic, quartered, 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth, 8 ounces dried peaches, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 cup California Black Ripe Olives, wedged, 2 teaspoons country mustard, 1 ounce arugula, 8 onion rolls, split and toasted, Kosher salt, to taste, Ground black pepper, to taste Directions: Heat oven to 375 degrees. In large, high-sided saute pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Season pork with salt and pepper, to taste, and cook in pan 3 to 4

minutes on each side until browned. Stir in garlic and continue cooking 3 to 5 minutes. Pour in chicken broth, peaches and chili powder; bring to boil. Cover loosely with foil and bake in oven two hours. With slotted spoon, carefully remove peaches and transfer to small mixing bowl.

Mix olives and mustard with peaches, set aside. Continue to cook pork in oven 30 to 60 minutes until fork tender. Allow to cool slightly, then shred by pulling apart with fork. Assemble sandwiches by spooning pork onto toasted rolls. Top with arugula and peach-olive mixture.

STICKY SESAME CHICKEN WINGS Recipe courtesy of Litehouse, Inc. Ingredients: 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 20 chicken wings, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon Litehouse Instantly Fresh Garlic, 3 tablespoons water, divided, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, Sliced green onions, for garnish, Sesame seeds, for garnish, Celery sticks (optional), Litehouse Homestyle Ranch and Chunky Bleu Cheese Dressing Directions: Heat oven to 400 degrees. In large bag, combine flour and salt. Add chicken wings and shake to coat.

with foil and spray with pan spray of your choice. Place wings in single layer on baking sheet. Bake wings 40 to 45 minutes, turning halfway through. In saucepan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, two tablespoons water and brown sugar. Whisk together remaining water and cornstarch, and pour into sauce. Bring to boil then simmer until thickened.

When wings are done, toss with sauce, garnish with green onion and sesame seeds, and serve with celery sticks, ranch and bleu cheese dressing.

Honoring John Lennon in Cuba Commentary by Don Knebel Among the most unexpected sights in Havana, Cuba, are a small park bearing a statue of John Lennon and a nearby bar devoted to music that Cuba TRAVEL previously banned.

In 1964, soon after The Beatles had appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro issued a nationwide decree banning The Beatles and their music as the supposed product of the decadent capitalist system. However, by the late 1990s, motivated at least in part

by Cuba’s desperate need for revenue from Western tourists, Castro’s attitude toward The Beatles changed. He now pictured John Lennon as a revolutionary martyr because of his opposition to the Vietnam War. On Dec. 8, 2000, the 20th anniversary of Lennon’s murder, Castro personally unveiled a bronze statue of Lennon in a public square west of Havana’s Old Town.

With “All You Need is Love” playing in the background, Castro explained why he had decided to honor the once-banned Lennon:

“I share his dreams completely. I, too, am a dreamer who has seen his dreams turn into reality.” The life-size likeness of Lennon, depicted as he looked during his days of protest, sits at the end of a bench, at the base of which is a Spanish translation of, “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one” from “Imagine.”

Busloads of tourists soon began coming to Parque John Lennon to have their pictures taken sitting beside the famous Beatle. The round eyeglasses were stolen so often that they are now guarded. In April 2011, the Cuban government opened Submarino Amarillo (Yellow Submarine) just east of the park. In the lively bar featuring blue and yellow walls covered in images of The Beatles and lyrics of their songs, Cuban musicians play music from the ’60s and ’70s that once would have led to their arrests.

Last week, I discussed the topic of subject-verb agreement. Many of you wrote in and asked GRAMMAR GUY about sports teams, particularly sports teams whose names don’t end in “s”: Are they considered singular or plural? Would you say, “The Jazz is winning the game” or, “The Jazz are winning the game?”

This is a tricky one. When it comes to the Indiana Pacers, you would always say, “The Pacers are winning the game” because “Pacers” is obviously plural, therefore the noun takes the plural verb “are.” The same goes for the Panthers, Packers, Pirates and Patriots. You would never say, “The Panthers is looking sluggish out there.”

When it comes to the official rules of grammar, allow me to punt to the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style.

Both guides suggest you treat all team names as plural, regardless of whether the team name ends in “s.” So, this means you should (according to the rules) say, “The Heat are winning the game.”

But what about soccer? And what

Many soccer clubs go by their city or club name, so you have teams being referred to as merely Liverpool or Watford (for city names), or Arsenal or Crystal Palace. By the same rule, you hear soccer (or football) announcers say things like, “Arsenal are really having a tough go of it today.”

So, my big question is: Does the same rule apply to your team when you’re referring to its location?

When referring to teams, locations and schools, use singular pronouns and verbs: “Harvard is bad at football.” Team names always take plural verbs.

The official British rules state a team is always plural, whether you’re referring to the team name or the city name. That’s why you hear British announcers say, “France are the World Cup champions.”

This sounds strange to our American English ears because our rules are different.
