ZCHS students advance to national level in app contest

A team of students from Zionsville Community High School has won best in state in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. achievement The team was selected from among more than 1,200 submissions nationwide.

Abi Robinson, Shelby Paden, Jordan Thielbar, Violet Dusek and Courtney Matkovic will now move on to the national competition with their mobile app concept, Food For You. The app is designed to allow users to donate money to families participating in free and reduced lunch programs nationwide.

A $5,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation and tablets for each of the students on the team has been awarded for the state level win. The monetary prize will fund the initial expenses to start up a new STEM program at ZCHS for the 2016-17 school year. The team plans to present the money to the school board in February.

The team is now eligible to win the Fan Favorite Award, which would earn them an additional $15,000 and the chance to work with experts from the MIT Media Lab to turn their concept into a working app.

We can’t just rest on these accolades because it’s a fragile thing.”

Zionsville was previously named the second safest city in America in a report from ADT Security.

According to the Consumer Affairs report, Fishers and Carmel are ranked as the fourth and fifth safest cities in Indiana respectively, with Westfield coming in at seventh.

Andrew Smith remembered

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Andrew Smith never was one to give up when the going got in memoriam tough. Friends and family members recalled his eagerness to tackle the hardest things first, whether it be on the basketball court, at school or his most difficult challenge of all: a two-year battle with lymphoma.

And although that struggle ended with Smith’s death Jan. 12, the 1,500 who gathered at Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown to remember his life Jan. 17 repeatedly heard a story of hope in the midst of tragedy.

“Right now, Andrew is experiencing something first that’s way, way better than the entrance into a Final Four game,” said Aaron Brockett, TPCC pastor who officiated the service. He and other family friends emphasized the importance of faith in Smith’s life.

Others reflected on Smith’s passion and skill on the basketball court. He grew up in Zionsville but attended Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis before becoming a key member of the Butler University team that made back-to-back appearances in the national title game.

“Nobody could’ve packed more meaningfulness into 25 years than Andrew Smith. It’s impossible to do,” Stevens said.

Weigh in on pathways

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The time is now for Zionsville runners, walkers and bicyclists to weigh in with their recommendations transportation for the Zionsville Pedestrian and Bikeways Plan.

There will be a public open house on the plan from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Zionsville Town Hall’s Community Room, 1100 W. Oak St. McClellan Residents will have the opportunity to share their opinion on the present and future needs of biking and walking in Zionsville.

Zionsville received a grant for partial funding of a bike and pedestrian master plan from the Indiana State Dept. of Health last summer.

The town provided the remaining funds and in December hired Louisville-based Rundell Ernstberger Associates, a landscaping architecture and urban design company, to prepare the plan. That firm is working with Matt Dickey, superintendent of the Zionsville Dept. of Parks and Recreation, to develop the project.

bike and pedestrian master paths for Fishers, Brownsburg, Richmond and several other municipalities in the Louisville area.

“The information we’re looking for at this meeting is, ‘Where do you ride your bike now, and where do you walk now?’” said Tricia McClellan, a principal for Rundell Ernstberger.

“Then also wishes — ‘Where would you like to be able to run or walk or bike?’”

McClellan said there will be maps showing existing conditions for people to examine before making recommendations.

“We’ll have stations set up with markers and dots, so we’ll have people drawing on the maps,” McClellan said.

McClellan and several Rundell Ernstberger Associates staffers will man the stations.

Residents can recommend how to improve pedestrian and bicycle circulation within neighborhoods.

“The next public meeting will be when we get reaction from them on proposed possibilities,” McClellan said.

A community survey will soon be available online and in hard copy format at a number of area businesses. A project website and maps also will be available. Links will be available on the town’s website this week, McClellan said.

Reader’s View: Oak Street signal needed Editor, I’ve lived one block north of State Road 334, now Oak Street, on this accident-prone road since 1970.

It is very difficult to make a left-hand turn from side roads and/or driveways onto Oak at any time during the day. There is often quite a wait to make a right turn onto Oak also.

The resident’s comments stated in the Jan. 16 Current article are exactly correct.

Accidents occur for a variety of reasons: bad weather, road conditions, vehicle malfunctions, driver’s sudden health issue, and yes, driver errors as Mayor Tim Haak stated.

Nonetheless, it is the role of our public servants to do as much as they can for the safety of Zionsville residents (and all who travel Oak Street). A study shouldn’t even be needed.

Birds of Prey program returns

By Michelle Williams news@currentzionsville.com The Birds of Prey presentation will return to Zionsville Town Hall at 1 p.m. Jan. 30. Zion Nature Center will host nature center the raptors of Mark Booth and Take Flight Wildlife Education. The program is free and open to the public with no registration required.

“It will be a surprise which birds come,” Nature Center Manager Mindy Murdock said.

“He waits to see that day how the birds are responding. He normally will try to bring four different types of raptors.”

Raptors, also known as birds of prey, are birds that hunt other animals for food. They usually have sharp talons and a hooked beak to help tear apart their food, and they are known for extremely good eyesight, excellent hearing and other special adaptations. Raptors include owls, eagles, hawks and falcons. All birds in the program are native species to Indiana.

“We want people to understand what the birds are – what they‘re like, what they do for a living,” Booth said. “But the overarching goal is to get people interested in nature in general. They are representations of how cool nature is.”

The program is a listen and learn, auditorium-style format that is ideal for ages 5 and older. Murdock anticipates the program to last approximately one hour, which includes a period for questions and answers.

“In a park, you may see a bird – a hawk or a bald eagle – but most of us don‘t sit around long enough to see how they actually behave,” Murdock said. “(Booth) will bring out a raptor and go through the different adaptations of that bird. He‘ll talk about their eyesight, how they use their claws. The owl last year ate some food so people could see how they eat.

He goes over a lot of those behaviors and how they‘re built to do what they do for a living.”

Zionsville attorney recognized

By Audrey Bailey • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville resident Donna J. Bays was recently recognized for excellence in the area of family law at the Indiachievement ana State Bar Association’s annual meeting, where she received the Gale Phelps award.

Bays has been practicing law for more than 25 years and since 2011 has run Bays Family Law in Zionsville, alongside her daughter, Jennifer Bays Beinart. “(Receiving the award) really touched my heart, because I knew Gale Phelps, personally,” Bays said. “In fact, she was my divorce lawyer when I got divorced. So, she was the epitome of what a family lawyer should be like.”

Bays first received her undergraduate degree from Ball State University. After working as a reporter for The Anderson Herald, she decided to attend Indiana University, where she received her law degree.

As a Certified Family Law Specialist, Bays focuses on a range of family matters that include divorce, child custody, parenting time, paternity and cohabitation and domestic partnerships.

Taking a look at gunny sacks Commentary by Ward Degler Years back a friend who hailed from the mountains of West Virginia talked about his two maiden aunts as the burlap sisters.

“A couple old bags,” he plain talk said with a smile. To make it an even better story, he added that their last name was Gunny. “Mable and Margaret Gunny.”

I don’t know if any of that was true. My friend was from West Virginia, after all, and those mountain folk do love a good story.

Still, burlap bags used to be called gunny sacks. The name came from “goni,” an Indian word from the Mangalore district in India. It simply meant fiber. The English morphed it into “gunny,” a word they gave jute bags used to transport grain.

Out in Idaho where most of the potatoes in the country come from, gunny sacks became a standard measure for 100 pounds of spuds.

Even though the potato farmers no longer use gunny sacks for their produce, they still refer to 100 pounds of potatoes as a sack.

In the part of Missouri where I grew up,

everybody had a supply of gunny sacks. You could use them for anything: garden vegetables, apples, hickory nuts and even chickens.

For some reason, though, they didn’t call them gunny sacks, they called them pokes.

A peek into local history offered a feasible reason for this. The area was settled back in the late 1700s by French fur traders. Poke comes from the French word poque, which means sack.

Having said that, my Hoosier grandfather was fond of cautioning us to never buy “a pig in a poke.” Maybe a couple of those Missouri fur traders made it up the White River to Wildcat Creek after all.

Supposedly, the pig in a poke warning came from parts of Europe where meat was scarce but cats were not. Before buying a pig, it was good idea to open the poke.

And sometimes that let the cat out of the bag.

Local Beatles scholar Aaron Krerowicz to speak at Zionsville library

By Sam Elliott • sam@youarecurrent.com Butler University graduate Aaron Krerowicz has turned his love of music and the Beatles into a one-of-a-kind career.

As in, he’s the only one.

Krerowicz, who lives in Carmel near cover story the border with Zionsville, bills himself as the nations’s only full-time Beatles scholar, and fortunately for local Fab Four enthusiasts, he moved to the area in September after attending graduate school and living in New England the past seven years.

He’ll be giving his signature multimedia presentation, “The Beatles: Band of the Sixties,” at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the HusseyMayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., in Zionsvillle.

“That’s by far the most popular, because it’s just an overview in general scope,” Krerowicz said of the presentation. “A lot of the others are specific albums or specific songs or specific angles like Paul’s bass playing or something like that. We just go year by year, 1960 through 1970. It’s a very good survey of their career.”

While “Band of the Sixties” is Krerowicz’s most popular, it’s just one of more than two dozen Beatles presentations in his repertoire. Album- and song-specific presentations include “‘Yesterday,’ The World’s Most Recorded Song,” “The Beatles’ Alter Ego, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and “Carte Blanche: The Beatles’ ‘White Album.’”

Krerowicz has also prepared presentations analyzing the structure and harmony of Beatles music and others focusing on individual members of the group, including “‘Turn Me On Dead Man’: The Notorious ‘Paul is Dead’ Hoax,” “‘Beneath the Waves’: The Development of Paul McCartney’s Bass Playing, 1962-1969” and “Starr Time: A Celebration of Ringo Starr’s Contributions to the Beatles.”

Krerowicz has toured America and visited England giving his Beatles presentations. He visited 14 states to deliver 84 presentations in 2015, and his first English lecture tour included

speaking twice in London and three times in the band’s hometown of Liverpool.

Krerowicz’s first exposure to the Beatles came as a child, thanks to his father, who had also grown up listening to the band. After graduating from Butler in 2008 with a Bachelor of Music deAaron Krerowicz will soon release gree in theory and coman album titled “Odds ‘n’ Ends.” (Subposition, Krerowicz got mitted photo) a Master’s degree from Boston University in 2010 and in 2012 earned a Graduate Artist Diploma from the University of Hartford, where he delved into study into the Fab Four.

Research ‘Granted’

A grant he won through the university in November 2011 supported his thorough research.

“The way the grant worked was the university gave the university music library funds to make purchases at my request, so I could go to the library and say, ‘I want this book, this book and this book,’ which was pretty awesome,” Krerowicz said.

“That’s given me kind of the foundation onto which I could start a career doing this kind of thing.”

His research has led to Krerowicz writing three books on the Beatles. His first, “The Beatles & The Avant-Garde,” was published in 2014. “The Beatles: Band of the Sixties” followed as an Amazon Kindle eBook in April 2015 and “From the Shadow of JFK: The Rise of Beatlemania in America” was published in June 2015.

Also a musician himself, Krerowicz has plans to release an album, “Odds ‘n’ Ends,” later this month. He also recently

launched a series of analytical videos on his website, AaronKrerowicz.com, called “The Beatles Minute.” Each approximately one-minute video focuses on one specific element of the Fab Four and their music — music Krerowicz only becomes more a fan of as he continues his unique work.

“It’s the kind of thing where you can listen to Beatles music without knowing anything about it and really just appreciate the music as a consumer. As a listener, you can really get into the music. What I found is the more I listened, the more I wanted to figure out — why is this music so good?” he said.

“Analytically, what’s going on here? Musically, structurally, harmonically, how does all this work together to create this great music? So, the more I liked the music, the more I listened to the music, the more I liked it, the more I wanted to study it, which gave me greater appreciation for the artistry, which made me want to listen that much more, which made me want to analyze that much more.”

There always are scams in our midst, engineered by (a) greedy people with far too much time on their hands that believe they are more sophisticated than they actually might be, (b) outright criminals or (c) both of the aforementioned. Too often they succeed, frequently with older, unsuspecting adults. They love calling landlines, but now they’re branching out to cell lines. And so it has gone the last month or so with one such attempted swindle that failed miserably – if you discount the fact that it elicited fear, anger and utter outrage from some targets we know. It went like this, and we assume it’s still going like this: Someone calls and says there was a warrant for one’s arrest and that a lawsuit was being prepared by the Internal Revenue Service (we have to believe for “unpaid taxes.” The IRS itself would contact you and, we assume, would be far more professional.). This is tantamount to proffering the Brooklyn Bridge or “land” in south-central Florida for sale. In some cases, it’s an automated dialing system instructing the theoretical defendant to call back. Someone we know did that; she called back and played along. She told the cretin on the other end of the line that she would meet the caller at his office to rectify the situation, whereupon the guy disconnected. The fact is, folks, there was no office. These creeps are tech savvy, to be sure, but they need to find another line of work … if you can call it that.

President and accounted for Commentary by Terry Anker There was a time, not that long ago, that every young person imagined that they might become President of the United States.

Well, to be fair, many of those same kids hoped that if they ate their spinach that they might become Popeye. Nevertheless, we were taught from the earliest school days to aspire to the vaunted and esteemed office.

Sure, a few struggled to conceive of themselves breaking free from their own real or constructed limitations. But generally, it was a time of great expectations.

Decades later, one wonders if my kindly, nonetheless quite elderly first grade teacher, Mrs. Nichols, honestly expected one of her class of mostly poor farm kids to make the jump to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Yet, she made us believe not only that we could but that we should.

Today, we are more, as some might argue, evolved. We’re highly cynical – less wide-eyed in our optimism. However, some continue to promote a message of aspiration. Our best years remain ahead of us!

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is now accepting applications for the Future Presidents of America Youth Leadership Camp in late June. Touted as “a fun and innovative one-week summer camp for smart, engaged young adults (12-16) that builds individual confidence, civic literacy and good citizenship,” it interactively tells the story of a local boy who made good but also inspires its attendees to imagine how they might make the journey to the White House.

In these months of name calling and assuredly sophomoric behavior from our political elites, one can fully understand why no good parent would encourage their sweet progeny to seek a role in the sausage factory. But, can we imagine a world without a willing and participatory democracy? Any student of history will exclaim – yes, we can imagine and it isn’t pretty.

I’m annoyed, but maybe you can have a good laugh. My husband Doo came down earlier than usual this mornhumor ing, turned on all the lights and sat at the kitchen counter to go through bills. He even tried talking to me.

What’s going on? Doesn’t he understand I have a routine, a ritual? A 45-minute plan that includes 90 percent darkness and 100 percent silence? That to have the day thrust upon me at 6:30 a.m., when I haven’t even had coffee, is grounds for stink eye and possibly a full-on conniption?

Clearly he does not. When I asked him to return the room to peaceful blackness he said, “Are you kidding me?” and then proceeded to tear open an envelope. In a huff, I packed up and left. At least I could reach my quiet classroom with a few minutes to spare before being bombarded by hundreds of teenagers and oddly, a toilet bowl cleaner. (Is someone sending me a message? “Swim with the turds, Wilson!”)

Last night, we had a similar “incident.” I’d already turned back into a pumpkin and was literally trying to sleep (eyes closed, blanket tucked), but Doo was in the midst of a fashion show. (Yes, a fashion show. He wanted to parade his new clothes for my approval.) His stuff was strewn all over the room, including the bed, and he kept walking in and out of the bathroom.

“How do these jeans look?” “Does this shirt wash me out?” I admit to enjoying his production, but seriously, I just wanted to sleep.

I expressed my fatigue and begged him to call it quits, but I came off sounding naggy, even to myself. Bottom line, my husband’s a classic extravert and wants noise and light and stimulus at every hour, while I require the opposite. And there’s nothing I can do except vent to you about our marital trials, however banal.

So here we are, back to my annoyance over my beautifully-crafted morning and evening routines being fire-bombed by a handsome bald-guy in a new sweater-vest. It’s okay. Go ahead and chuckle.

Underground activities Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I was looking for a magazine to take on the plane to pass the time on our two-hour flight to Houston. I chose a publication humor called “Archaeology,” intrigued by the cover that proclaimed “The Top Archeological Discoveries in 2015.”

I figured if any magazine could dig up some cool stuff this would be the one.

The first story is about hikers in South Africa who called the local police, reporting they had found some “transitional hominid remains.” I think it is a good bet they simply called and said, “Hey, we found some dead guy,” but the magazine needed to class things up a bit for their brainy readership.

In Kenya, a research team claims to have unearthed tools dating back to the dawn of man. Most of the implements were large rocks fashioned into hammering devices, as well as a few arrowheads. However, scientists were baffled by the Phillips-head screwdriver they found, because it predates the Phillips-head screw by about three million years.

Archeologist Silvia Windauer claims to have uncovered the world’s oldest pretzel, originally baked about 400 years ago. “It was rock hard,

tasteless and inedible,” said the professor, which is pretty much what you also say about a four-day-old pretzel. Wait: did she really taste it? By the way, the scientists also found the remains of dozens of discarded, uneaten rolls in what looked like an ancient trash bin, speculating the baker simply overestimated what he needed that day and chucked the extra. Legend has it that the chef later migrated to Italy where he invented the idea of unlimited breadsticks.

What was the first musical instrument? No one is really sure, but apparently something that sounded like a kazoo was once uncovered in some ruins in Portugal. The item was next to a Neanderthal man, but his body was isolated some 50 miles from the rest of his tribe. Scientists are not sure why this man was left alone to die. I have a pretty good idea.

Actress Stark is back in the habit in ‘Sister Act’ at Beef & Boards

She flew through the air and refused to grow up in “Peter Pan,” did what comes natur’lly in “Annie Get your Gun” and looked “swell” in “Hello, Dolly.” theater Now, after sharing a few of her “favorite things” with Maria as Mother Abbess in “The Sound of Music,” longtime Beef & Boards favorite Suzanne Stark slips on the nun’s habit again as Mother Superior in “Sister Act,” Feb. 11 through March 26 at the northwest Indy dinner theater.

“I enjoy playing a nun partly because we know what her religious position is and, therefore, I can make deliberate acting choices based on that,” said Stark, a former 20-year Carmel resident who now resides on Indy’s north side. “I loved playing Mother Abbess, but making Mother Superior multi-dimensional will be the challenge, especially given the short amount of time she will be in front of the audience and what her ‘role’ is in the moving the story along.

“Right now I am not clear yet ‘who’ Mother Superior is, especially since this is the first time I’ve played this role. However, the script is definitely giving me clues. At the outset, I think I can say she is more a bit more rigid than the Mother Abbess.

Is it possible that Mother Superior will learn just as much as Deloris does in the course of the show? I think we can count on it.”

The “Deloris” Stark is referring to is Deloris Van Cartier, a ’60s disco diva in a witness protection program at a convent in the St. Katherine’s Parish. As a witness to a murder by her mobster boyfriend, her life is in danger. Despite her and Mother Superior’s objections, she “becomes” a nun – habit and all – and is given the name Sister Mary Clarence. Using her song and dance talents, Deloris inspires a choir of nuns to create new energy in the church and community.

starring Whoopi Goldberg as Sister Mary Clarence and twotime Oscar winner Maggie Smith as Mother Superior.

“I adore Maggie Smith,” said Stark of the British actress, who, at age 81, is one of the stars of television’s “Downton Abbey,” “I think she is brilliant, and there is no one like her. I keep thinking of her as I work through the script even though the stage musical is different from the movie. If I could only do what she does … alas, no one can.”

This is the first time “Sister Act” is being done at Beef &

Boards. Director Doug Stark, who also has a small role in the show as the Monsignor, says the show transcends to the stage very well.

“Some of the people who know only the movie will be very pleased with how this looks on stage,” said Doug, Suzanne’s former husband. “The flavor is exactly the same, and the characters are very close to the same.”

However, the stage production uses music Stark differently than the movie did. Songs in the movie don’t replace dialogue the way they do in the stage musical where the numbers move the plot along. Some of the songs are used to illustrate character purpose, struggle or thought process and often result in action or are the action itself. The joyous, movie-ending “I Will Follow Him” isn’t in the stage version, but Doug said there are some very high octane numbers that will replace it.”

Heading the cast of nuns and playing Sister Mary Clarence is Zuri Washington, who stood out among the 200 Doug auditioned in New York. Washington recently starred in the national tour of “Memphis, the Musical” as Felicia. Other credits include “Bring It On: The Musical,” “Rent,” “M33” and Jim Steinman’s Washington “Bat Out of Hell.”

“This young lady just knocked my socks off,” Doug said.

“She’s just part of a great group of nuns who are going to rock the house and bring the walls down.”

I made it my mission to tour Hamilton Co. and search for the best, soul-warming soups offered by local restaurants.

Get it at Café Patachou, Carmel When I wandered in Café Patachou in Clay Terrace on the morn of New Year’s Day, soup was the last thing on my mind. As you would expect, I was yearning for some greasy breakfast food to start the year off right. Yet when I learned the French café served a thick tomato soup with artichokes – of all things to pair it with – I had to try it. There was absolutely no absence of parmesan cheese or croutons to add a little crunch to the thick soup, and the thin strips of artichoke were not too overbearing and added a unique touch. Must I say, it was the perfect breakfast. Bon appétit.

Get it at Langton’s, Carmel First up is Langton’s clam chowder. The chowder was served piping hot and there was no often common problem of too much potato and not enough clams. The chowder was dense and heavy enough to be a meal if so decided. Not only was the soup phenomenal, but the option of ordering it in a rosemary bread bowl made in house awarded this the perfect winter choice. The bowl had a nice, baked crust on the exterior, with plenty of airy bread on the inside to absorb the chowder.

Get it at Rosie’s Place, Noblesville Being winter, tomato soup is a favorite of cold and sleepy people. Rosie’s Place offers a variety of homemade soups each day. The day I happened to wander in, their soup of the day was tomato basil.

The soup was the perfect blend between thin and thick with just the right portion of tomato chunks. I slurped it down without waiting for the steam to abide, it was that good. Their soups do differ daily, so call the café at 770-3322 to clarify what the soup of the day is.

Braised beef chowder from Rail Epicurean Market in Westfield.

Get it at Rail Epicurean Market, Westfield I had never heard of braised beef chowder, and was not exactly sure what to expect, but I knew the Rail wouldn’t let me down. They offer unique and tasty soups all the time, and the beef chowder was no exception. The creaminess of the soup was perfect for the chilly day, and the beef practically melted in my mouth.

Stir in parsley, season with salt and pepper. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese.

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley The most copied item on today’s restaurant menus is the slider. It seems like even upscale eateries offer some kind of slider. So let’s talk about making the most famous slider of all, the hamburger, right at home in your kitchen. You can do it, and guests will enjoy them during your Super Bowl party.

Hamburger Sliders Ingredients: 1 lb. ground beef (80 percent lean), 12 slider buns, 2 cups diced onion, Dill pickle chips, Salt and pepper, French’s Brown Mustard Preparation: At least an hour ahead, place the diced onions in a bowl, cover them with water, cover it and let them sit until needed.

Use a pencil and ruler to line a sheet of parchment paper into a dozen three inch squares.

Place the ground beef onto the parchment paper and take a second sheet and cover the meat. Roll the meat with a rolling pin to 1/4 inch thickness. You’ll need to trim the edges each time to put the excess meat back onto the top of the first layer. Using a large knife, cut the meat into squares that match the pencil lines.

Place the meat, with parchment, onto a cookie sheet and place it into the freezer for 25-30 minutes. Take the meat out and punch five holes into each piece with the large end of a chopstick or drinking straw. Place the punched patties on parchment back into the freezer for one hour or until frozen.

On a griddle or large frying pan spoon out the water soaked onions and heat them until slightly crispy. Remove the meat from the freezer and break off the patties. Place the patties on the onions and cook five to seven minutes.

Salt and pepper the meat slightly. Separate the buns and place the bottom of the slider buns

face down on top of the patties and then place the bun tops face down atop of the bottoms.

The onion and steam will cook the patties so that you can use a spatula to pick up a burger, turn it over and place the top onto the onion side. Plate these sliders and add a pickle and mustard to each.

La Vie Nails opens in Zionsville

Belskus to lead Indy Eleven

With nearly 1,000 color choices for the perfect manicure, La Vie Nails salon opened in Zionsville Jan. 15. new biz “I love Zionsville,” Owner Monica Nguyen said. “The people are so nice. The area’s really good.”

Her first salon at 86th Street and Township Line Road 14 years ago had a lot of customers from this area, so when she eventually sold the salon, she hoped to someday open a new store closer to her Carmel and Zionsville customers.

She found the right spot in the Zionsville Shopping Center at 1215 W. Oak St. “I’m very, very lucky to get this (location),” she said.

Her salon is next to the Rice Cooker, coincidentally for the second time. The restaurant owners opened a second spot at 86th Street and Township Line Road more than a decade ago next door to Nguyen’s salon.

“Now I come back here, and I’m next to them,” she said. “It’s very funny.”

She and her husband also own a Vietnamese noodle restaurant in Castleton, Pho Tasty.

Nguyen has four employees at her Zionsville salon but will add up to 10 in the summer when business increases.

“My children both participated in youth soccer programs in the ZIonsville area,” said Belskus, who has lived in Zionsville since new role 1988. “So I had some knowledge from that perspective. I’ve been a fan and day by day I’m becoming a more knowledgable fan.”

Belskus, 56, was named as the Indy Eleven president Jan. 11. He is a former Indianapolis Motor Speedway president and CEO, serving from 2009 to 2013. In October of 2013, he was named president and CFO of Hulman & Co., the Speedway’s parent organization. He Belskus retired in early 2015 after 27 years with Hulman & Co. “This particular opportunity really interested me, and I felt like this is something I can be successful with,” Belskus said. “That’s what motivated me to come out of retirement, if you will. It’s really been energizing. I like what I’m seeing, and I feel good about our future.”

Belskus said while racing and soccer are different products, there are similarities in experiences.

“It’s promoting live events and conducting live events,” Belskus said. “It’s selling tickets and doing all the things that go into that from a business perspective. It’s all things we did in motorsports and all things that are applicable here. The skill set transfers really well, and I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Belskus said ticket sales and sponsorships will be two high priorities.

“If you ask anybody in the country that runs any sports franchise, they’re probably going to list those as critical important elements,” he said. “Trying to resolve our stadium situation with the quest for a permanent home certainly is a priority as well.”

The Indy Eleven have been playing in Carroll Stadium at IUPUI since the team’s inaugural spring season in the North American Soccer League.

DIVORCE – WHAT TO EXPECT: PROPERTY DIVISION In Indiana, courts divide a divorcing parties’ property in a manner which is deemed to be fair and reasonable. Indiana law follows the “one-pot” theory for the division of marital property, which presumes all marital property is put into one pot and that a fifty-fifty (50/50) division of all marital assets and liabilities is presumed to be fair and reasonable. However, there are various factors Courts consider in determining whether or not a deviation from the equal division is warranted, including: the contribution of each spouse to the acquisition of property; the economic circumstances of each spouse at the time of the disposition of the property; the conduct of the parties during the marriage as related to disposition or dissipation of their property; and the earning ability of the parties. Thus, while an equal division is presumed, one party can request more than fifty percent of the marital estate.

What is Marital Property? It is important for parties to understand what is considered marital property as many people believe certain assets or accounts remain separate from the estate. This is incorrect per the current case law. Absent a prenuptial agreement, excluding certain property from becoming part of the marital estate, Indiana law presumes that all assets and debt brought into or acquired during the marriage is marital property and is subject to division by the Court. With that starting point, careful review of the facts and understanding of the law can allow for a persuasive argument that certain property or liabilities should be allotted to one party in the division of the estate as a

deviation. Such a determination is very contextual and seeking legal advice is recommended to determine if such a request is supported by the facts of a given case. Each case is unique and the decision to order an unequal division of property is left to the discretion of the Court. Further, it is important to note that property which is acquired after the date of the filing of the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage may be considered property which is separate from the marital estate; however, this is not always true, so, again, proper evaluation of the marital estate is crucial to understand options and maximize results.

Agreed division of the marital estate requires the work of the parties and counsel to reach equitable results. A preferable option to arguing division before the court is to come to terms via negotiation and/or mediation on a settlement that reflects the nature of the marital estate, the needs of the parties, and allows for a result that has benefits for both sides. In addition, this analysis best incorporates advice from financial planners to determine a division which will have the fewest tax consequences or negative implications on the estate.

Home sales up 8 percent Commentary by Jim Litten The year finished on a high note, with 2015 showing an 8 percent increase in pended home sales over 2014 in the real estate nine-county central Indiana region. It was a strong year for sellers, as sale prices increased each month while available homes decreased during 11 months in 2015 when compared to 2014. December 2015 also saw growth in pended sales and average sales prices by 0.6 percent and 4.4 percent, respectively.

Boone County’s inventory declined 12.1 percent, and the average year-to-date sales price for homes in the county decreased 3.8 percent to $270,894.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sales price decreased 2.7 percent compared to this time last year, dropping to $374,117.

• Inventory moved at a slower pace in Zionsville in December 2015. Overall, homes sold in 74 days – eight more days than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had fewer options available to them. Last month, 155 homes were available for sale – 20 fewer homes compared to December 2014.

• Pended home sales decreased slightly in Zionsville. In December 2015, 25 homes sold – five fewer homes compared to December 2014.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, one was priced greater than $2 million; three were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 14 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; four were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and three were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

2015 was marked by modest growth, but the nine-county central Indiana region has performed as well as and, in some respects, better than the national trends in home sales.

We expect 2016 to emulate last year, as interest rates and affordability affect the industry.

However, we’re optimistic that homeownership is still appealing to the majority of millennials, as reported by the National Association of Realtors, which indicates 94 percent of current renters younger than 35 want to buy a home.

The word of the year is

Western society has either begun its transcendence into a new digital age, or its descent into madness. grammar guy I can’t tell. Either way, in 1,000 years linguists will look back to now and identify 2015’s “Word of the Year” as the harbinger of what was to come.

Proving, perhaps, that a picture really is worth a thousand words, Oxford Dictionaries has chosen for the first time ever a pictograph as “Word of the Year.” Those are their words, and they gussy things up a bit. What they chose was an emoji – specifically the laughing-so-hard-I’m-crying “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji. (Refer to the nearest 14-year-old if you’re unfamiliar.)

According to Oxford Dictionaries and mobile technology business SwiftKey, the “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji made up 20 percent of all the emojis used in the UK and 17 percent of those used in the U.S. They note it’s also seen heavy use from celebrities and brands and made an appearance on the Vine that kicked off the “on fleek” meme … which I just hate.

Here’s Oxford’s reasoning in their own words:

“Emojis are no longer the preserve of texting teens – instead, they have been embraced as a nuanced form of expression, and one which can cross language barriers. Even Hillary Clinton solicited feedback in the form of emojis, and (Face with Tears of Joy) has had notable use from celebrities and brands alongside everyone else – and even appeared as the caption to the Vine which apparently kicked off the popularity of the term ‘on fleek,’ which appears on our WOTY shortlist.”

Before you lose all hope, the American Dialect Society chose singular “they” as their word of the year. That’s an excellent choice, and one that deserves (and will get) its own column. For my two cents, the word of the year, at least for Indiana, was “impinge” – as used, likely more than ever prior in the history of the word, by Gov. Mike Pence during the RFRA debate.

Pella, Jordan, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world. Its history is linked with a prophecy of Jesus that travel figures into speculation about the end of time.

About 10,000 years ago, Stone Age farmers established a permanent village in the fertile lands in the eastern foothills of the Jordan River Valley. By 1800 B.C., the village had become a city called “Pihilum,” featuring an important Canaanite temple. The Greeks captured Pihilum in the third century B.C. and renamed it “Pella,” honoring the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

When the Romans captured the area in 63 B.C., they made Pella one of the 10 self-governing cities of the Decapolis, adding the temples, theaters, baths and colonnaded streets typical of major Roman cities.

In 70 A.D., four Roman legions sent to Jerusalem to put down the First Jewish Revolt entered the city after an extended siege, killed up to a million residents and demolished the Second Temple. In the fourth century, Eusebius and other historians reported. Christian

inhabitants of Jerusalem had been warned of the impending devastation by a “revelation” and escaped to Pella, about 50 miles northeast. Many scholars associate this account with the statements of Jesus, reported in the “Gospel of Luke,” predicting the destruction of the temple and warning his followers to “flee to the mountains” when they see “Jerusalem being surrounded by armies.” Despite the first century context of Jesus’ statements, some believe they presage events at the end of time and await their own cues to flee to the mountains.

Pella was destroyed by an earthquake in 749 and its history largely forgotten. But the story of the early Christians’ flight to Pella was remembered by 800 freedom-seeking Dutch immigrants who settled in southern Iowa in 1847 and named their new town after that ancient refuge.
