200 West given one more chance

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The developers of 200 West will have one more chance to bring their project before the Zionsville Plan Commission, as the ZPC reluctantly granted a third continuance at its Development Jan. 17 meeting.

If plans aren’t ready for the commission to review at its March meeting, both sides agreed the project would be dropped.

“The first round that we were presented was a little bit, I think a polite term would be broad, in its request, hence the reason it didn’t really move forward,” commissioner Larry Jones said. “There’s the understanding that if we’re going to grant a third continuance, that’s the end.”

The project as originally presented in early 2016 would have included 15 single-family homes, 75 multi-family homes and commercial uses on 4.32 acres. After receiving negative feedback from the public, the developers modified the project, but the changes weren’t enough to keep the ZPC and Zionsville Town Council from voting against a zoning change for it in 2016.

The latest version of the project, which is near Sycamore and Main streets, does not include residential and thus does not require a zoning change.

Plans filed with the town show a single three-story mixed-use building with underground parking.

The latest round of delays began when developers planned to present a new proposal for 200 West to the ZPC at its October 2016 meeting but asked for a continuance because a parcel of land was at risk of being removed from the project.

In November 2016, Ochs told commissioners that the parcel was removed, which necessitated “a significant design change.” He requested an-

other continuance and was granted 60 days.

At the Jan. 17 meeting, Ochs said the project needed additional redesign work after the town changed parking requirements in the Village area in December and that floodplain problems had become “a bigger issue than the developer originally anticipated.”

“The design team has finally been able to convince the developer if this is going to move forward, we need to have all our ducks in a row and do this the right way,” Ochs said.

Ochs originally suggested moving the discussion to the ZPC’s February meeting but agreed to 60 more days after commissioners and staff members expressed skepticism that the project would be ready in time.

“Given the amount of work that staff has not seen, it’s difficult for staff to fathom that we can get the project in, reviewed, commented on and fully corrected back to you in that 30-day window,” Zionsville Director of Planning Wayne DeLong said.

The 200 West project is expected to be discussed again at the ZPC meeting at 7 p.m. March 20.

Metro FiberNet spokesman Steve Biggerstaff said fiber optic technology is only available in about 8 percent of the nation, making places that have it more desirable. He said the company expects the technology to continue to grow in popularity as consumers use more devices for more purposes.

The Zionsville Plan Commission approved a declaratory resolution Jan. 17 outlining the TIF zone and an economic development plan for it.

Schaibley authors fireworks bill

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com State Rep. Donna Schaibley, who represents parts of Carmel and Zionsville, has authored a bill that would allow local officials state to set their own hours for Fourth of July fireworks.

Presently, state law allows for fireworks five days before and after July 4 until 10 p.m. and until midnight on July 4.

Schaibley Schaibley’s bill, which is similar to another bill in the senate, would only guarantee fireworks between the hours of 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset on July 3 and 5 and between the hours of 10 a.m. and midnight July 4. New Year’s Eve rules remain unchanged, with fireworks allowed between 10 a.m. Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. Jan. 1. City and town councils could vote to change their city fireworks hours and could opt to allow for more days or longer hours, but they can’t be any shorter than state law.

In previous years, a similar bill has been submitted in the state legislature but hasn’t received hearings. Lobbyists from the fireworks companies have fought against restricting the number of days and times for fireworks displays.

Trail closure

A portion of the SP-1 trail in Starkey Park is closed at least until summer because a fallen oak tree caused permanent damage to a pedestrian boardwalk and stairs. Zionsville Parks Dept. crews discovered the tree Jan. 19 and began removing it the same day. Parks officials said the tree fell as a result of pedestrians leaving the marked trail, which led the tree roots to compact and die. The repairs are estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars. Library to recreate Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com In honor of the global Harry Potter Book Night, the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library will bring an element of books the series to life.

Diagon Alley, a wizarding shopping area featured in each of the seven books, will occupy most of the rooms on the first floor of the library from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 21. Participants can visit locations such as Olivanders, where they will acquire a wand.

“It’s top secret how we’re giving them out, but the wand will choose them,” said Julie Meyers, a children’s librarian.

Flourish and Blotts Bookseller, an owlery, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and the Weasley brothers’ joke shop are among the other businesses that will be part of Diagon Alley.

The program is open to anyone in second grade up to adult age but limited to the first 50 registrants. The library will keep a waiting list for those unable to register in the event of cancellations.

The first time the library celebrated Harry Potter Book Night several years ago, it similarly recreated large-scale elements of the wizarding world. Myers said that due to the amount of work involved that year, library

officials decided to celebrate the series on a smaller scale through interactive movies.

“Now, we decided we’re ready for a big event again,” she said.

Wands and wand holders for the program were created by the 25 youth who are part of the library’s Tween Council. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The event also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the book’s release. The first book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” was published in England on June 26, 1997. It was released a year later in America under the name “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

Women to focus on courage

The annual Women’s Gathering at Zionsville Presbyterian Church Jan. 28 will feature three women who will share insight on “Taking Courage.”

“We thought because of the election year this faith would be a good topic to help people heal over the turmoil that’s been in the past year,” event co-chair Eileen Davis said.

The keynote speaker will be former newscaster Anne Ryder, the last person to conduct an interview with Mother Theresa before she died.

Ryder This year, two other speakers will precede Ryder. They are Jill Wilson, who runs Str8 Up Ministries, a teen outreach program, and Tina McIntosh, who founded Joy’s House, an adult day care service, when she was 27 years old.

Attendees will have the opportunity to talk about the speakers and topics in discussion groups during the day, which Davis said is often a highlight.

“I think that mixing of the generations and seeing things from different perspectives is really cool,” she said.

The event was initially an out-of-town weekend retreat, but several years ago was changed to a one-day event to accommodate women’s busier lives. Last year, 150 women attended to hear columnist and author Lori Borgman.

Mr. Zionsville talent show returns

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The annual Mr. Zionsville competition, a talent and variety show created almost entirely by seniors at Zionsville fundraiser Community High School, returns to the Zionsville Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 26.

The senior-led event is a fundraiser for the prom.

ZCHS senior Lily Farber, one of three directors of the show, has a long history with the competition. Her brother is a former contestant, and she has wanted to be a part of it since middle school.

“It’s always been something that I was interested in,” Farber said. “People will be blown away by the talent we have this year. There’s

more happening this year than there was last year.”

“There are so many talented people doing all these things you didn’t even know they knew how to do,” said Julia Sifferlin, a senior who is one of the emcees. “In all the skits there are all these little Zionsville inside jokes.”

All 12 contestants are seniors, as are the skit writers, emcees and three main directors.

Three additional directors are juniors who will coordinate the event the following year.

“It’s something unique that we do,” Farber said. “The boys can show what they’re good at, and it’s a way to get the whole school involved.”

Unique winter weapons Commentary by Ward Degler The salt trucks are busy, dozens of them weaving through our streets scattering rock salt for our driving safety. plain talk As a result, all our cars have taken on a grayish patina and our windshields are streaked with an opaque film that won’t completely disappear until sometime around Arbor Day. A certain amount of these chlorides also wind up in our lakes, rivers and groundwater, a fact that worries some environmentalists and members of the Anti-Salt League. This has led to alternative methods for snow removal.

In Minnesota, someone developed a substance made from ground-up corn cobs. It was effective, non-toxic and non-corrosive.

Unfortunately, it also turned the snow yellow.

The Minnesota Dept. of Transportation put out signs prompting people not to eat the yellow snow.

This, of course, reportedly sparked debate in the state legislature regarding the dangers of eating yellow snow. Some argued that since many of the corn cobs came from Green Giant after they had harvested Nibblets corn, the yellow snow could, in fact, be nutritious.

Somewhere along the way, the FDA prob-

ably weighed in, along with the EPA and maybe even the CIA. Wishing to avoid further controversy, state leaders quickly decided to ban the use of corn cobs for snow removal and return to salt.

Never to be defeated, however, environmentally minded scientists and salt barn managers have come up with other alternatives. The newest and greatest of these is beet juice.

In Wisconsin, several county DOTs are mixing beet juice with cheese brine. Apparently, the sugar from beets and the salt from cheese work together to melt snow and ice.

For home use, we are cautioned that rock salt can damage plants like azaleas. This leaves us the traditional snow shovel, snow blower, or for extremely long driveways, the snow plow. For those who can’t decide, there is always Florida.

By the way, Arbor Day is in April.

ZCHS lacrosse star makes history

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Community High School sophomore Kaija Kunttu recently competed for U17 Team USA in the inauachievement gural girls Brogden Cup, held Dec. 30 to Jan. 1 in Tampa, Fla. Kunttu was the only female player from the Midwest selected to participate.

To qualify for Team USA, Kunttu played with Team Ohio in the Brine All-American Lacrosse National Classic last summer. Kunttu was the only player from Indiana selected to compete in the Brine National Championship.

The Brogden Cup, a traditionally male competition, features all-star players from Ontario, Canada, competing against Brine National Lacrosse Classic champions from the U.S. The U.S. team won the first female Brogden International Cup with a 7-5 victory.

Kunttu started playing competitive lacrosse in first grade. She said she first played the sport in kindergarten.

“My love for it kind of grew from there, and I picked it up really fast,” Kunttu said.

Kunttu started on the Zionsville varsity lacrosse team as a freshman. Her coach, David Elefante, said lacrosse is growing quickly in Indiana, with new teams being added each

“It’s another option for girls,” Elefante said.

“It’s a really team-oriented sport that helps them build their confidence.”

Kunttu said she was honored to be a part of Team USA. “It was just amazing making the friendships and being able to play with such good lacrosse players and being exposed to the new coaching and the new perspectives and the new ways to do things,” Kunttu said. “I just thought it was so amazing.”

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com When Whitney Vredenburgh received the Leap of Faith Award from zWORKS in November, it seemed fitting for a woman who was inspired to build cover story her business after watching entrepreneurs in the coworking space succeed in their own ventures.

Vredenburgh had been working in marketing and sales for an agricultural company when she became a member of zWORKs, when it opened almost two years ago, as an alternative to her home office. She soon became intrigued by the possibility of building her own company.

“I felt like I was being called to start my own business,” she said. “It was scary. It required a lot of faith.”

She took the leap and Nested Spaces, her home staging and redesign business, launched last year.

Clients are primarily in Zionsville, but her vision is to expand into St. Louis and Louisville, with family and friends in both cities to help her grow.

“It’s really fulfilling to see that there’s a need out there,” she said.

Although Indianapolis has other staging companies, she said each fits a niche, and she differentiates her business by offering a variety of price options and finding something that works within her client’s budget.

Vredenburgh also helps clients cope with the emotional process of selling their home.

“We’re de-personalizing their space. We’re trying to make it appeal to as many buyers as possible,” she said. “I try to help them picture where they’re going to be moving to and how great it’s going to be to have the house sold and (for) them to be in their new space. It’s getting them excited about the next chapter, whatever it is.

“I just wanted to help people make that transition from selling their home to moving easier because it can be really stressful.”

Her mother has been in real estate for 20 years, so Vredenburgh saw firsthand how quickly a home could sell if it’s well-prepped and photographed before being listed.

According to a “Better Homes and Gardens” study, 90 percent of buyers use the internet as part of their house hunting, so Vredenburgh emphasizes the need to have the house staged for photos.

“The sellers that are most excited to move are more willing to do the updates necessary and are more willing to invest in the necessary repairs,” she said.

Vredenburgh’s team might recommend paint, suggest furniture choices and small repairs. She has furniture available for staging expressly for the business.

Nested Spaces supports Go Big Ten percent of profits from Nested Spaces support Go Big, a nonprofit dedicated to offering hope to expectant women in need.

Lori Buzzetti founded Go Big in 2012 and plans to create a house for pregnant women in Whitestown this year to offer life skills and education to foster self-sufficiency.

“We want to be a place that connects women with resources,” Buzzetti said.

Buzzetti, an OBGYN, came across women in her practice who were homeless or living in vehicles, and she wanted to give them a place that would help and meet their needs.

“I needed to open a maternity home to give them a place,” she said. “It was God-inspired.”

Vredenburgh and Buzzetti connected through Traders Point Christian Church, where they are both members.

“I was looking for a place to give back,” Vredenburgh said.

“I instantly felt like what she was doing was so important and so good for this community, too.”

“I think her business is a reflection of the generous, warm person that she is,” Buzzetti said. “We’re just really grateful for her.”

Vredenburgh has been helping to refurbish the interior of the Go Big building, selecting paint colors and furniture to make it feel like a home.

“I work with women a lot when I do staging,” Vredenburgh said. “I’m a female-owned business, so I wanted to do something that gave back to women.”

“There is a recipe for why certain homes sell quickly,” she said, noting the popularity of HGTV has changed expectations of homebuyers to find a turnkey home.

“There’s something really fun about taking a vacant house that is completely vacant and then warming it up with furniture and throws and pillows and lamps and artwork,” she said.

Vredenburgh is the sole full-time employee of Nested Spaces, but she relies on movers and women “who have that eye” for part-time help to stage the homes.

Moreover, she relies on members of Zionsville Women in Network and other members of zWORKS to provide guidance and support.

“I think the great part about zWORKS is you can have these one-off conversations with different people,” she said.

Being recognized at zWORKS for launching her business venture gives Vredenburgh a lot of encouragement to continue moving forward.

“When I started thinking about this business, folks were really supportive,” she said. “They’ve seen it evolve from this concept to this business. It’s very true that you have to get the right people.

They may not be working directly for you, but having a team of advisors is so, so important.”

Let’s just see if this works We’re perplexed by all the angst associated with President Donald Trump’s demeanor and Twitter finger since the election. We kept hearing that once he captured the nomination, Trump would pivot to a personality more fitting of the nominee of a major political party. It’s Trump. Why should he change? His “style” has brought him this far. Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush and the rest ran traditional campaigns, and they lost.

We said Trump was the only Republican capable of beating Clinton (although we believed she would win). If nothing else, he would throw her off her game, which is exactly what happened. It always was difficult to argue his view that much of our government is run by incompetents. We do take solace in Trump’s cabinet picks, however. We find some inspirational, such as Rex Tillerson for secretary of state and Betsy DeVos for secretary of education, among others. We simply don’t understand why everyone is so afraid of Trump’s perceived lack of experience and “smarts.” He was smart enough, apparently, to defeat the entire GOP field, beat the Clinton and former President Barack Obama machines, and relegate the Bushes to the sidelines.

This election was all about change. Similar to former President Bill Clinton’s brilliant “It’s the economy, stupid” line to remind his team why they were running, Trump talked endlessly about “bulldozing the status quo.”

While he’s doing that, his supporters are going to give him all the leeway he needs to accomplish his goals. If he doesn’t, he’s a one-termer. At best.

Generous to a fault Commentary by Terry Anker We can call it generosity, hospitality, or maybe simple kindness. Yet, we all give, and we all take. Can we ever give too much?

Maybe, but should we first ask if we can ever take too much? Most of us try to provide for a bit more than we consume. It is the Hoosier way. We open our homes, hearts and wallets to all. Friend, family and foe can expect shelter if absolutely needed. It is good to give. And, it feels correspondingly good.

But there are times, oh, so painful times, when circumstance requires the intervention of another to provide for our requirements or those of our families. One’s strident hope to provide for our own needs falls short – and are even forced to depend, as Blanche DuBois, the tragic Tennessee Williams character lamented, on the kindness of strangers. If it is right and good to give, then is it right and good to accept?

If we afford too much, so much that the lives of our own family members are to suf-

fer, it might be said that we have been generous to a fault. Conversely, can we likewise drink from the boundless support of others, so much that we come to expect if not demand the largesse, to the point of being counted as needy to a fault?

Our good works rarely achieve perfect balance with those times when we might demand a return favor. Routinely, we do as we can while accepting favors not from those indebted to ourselves but instead from others. Knowing that we can never hope to realize ideal reciprocation, we pour out our generosity in the notion of an imagined cosmic equilibrium between what we’ve done and what we receive. Is it possible to maintain an accurate balance sheet? And if so, how does one go about keeping account?

Well, friends, it’s finally happened. Doo and I have successfully caught one of our children in a bold-faced lie. humor After all these years of suspected truth-forgoing, I can now confidently say, “Parents 1, Kids 0!” A glorious moment for moms and dads everywhere, to be sure.

On New Year’s Eve, our precious firstborn child, all 6-foot-2 of him, looked me in the eyes and told me he’d be spending the night at a friend’s house. I sent G out the door 95 percent certain he was going where he said he was.

Like any good parent, however, I allowed that remaining 5 percent to dictate my next action, texting the mom to verify the plan. Before hearing back, though, Doo and I went off to our own celebration and completely forgot about our oldest until the following morning when he returned home.

He’d had a good time, they’d gotten some sleep ... now he was headed down to the Colts game. Great. Have fun!

But later that day, at a neighbor’s hangover party, the hostess casually mentioned to Doo that her daughter had seen G out last night, at some girl’s house. Honestly, I didn’t think much of this information, assuming the boys had gone to this party for a while and then headed back to the friend’s. Like most gullible moms, I didn’t really believe my son would lie, at least not to me.

Around 4 p.m. that day, though, the truth emerged. My mom-friend responded that they had not been at her house for New Year’s Eve, nor had they ever planned to be. What? I felt adrift. Part of me actually crumbled and screamed, “Nooooo, not my baby!” while ironically, the other part let forth a resounding, “Ah-ha! Busted!”

I like to think G confessed immediately because of the guilt he felt at lying, but his admittance was more likely due to the incontrovertible evidence stacked against him. Regardless, he served his punishment stoically and will hopefully think twice before his next teenage mis-adventure. Or at least be more diligent in hiding his tracks!

If my house is ever in flames, once my wife and cat are safe, that’s what I’m going back inside to save.

Mr. Buchwald lived on for several months, even writing a final book, “Too Soon to Say Goodbye,” a remarkable look back: “ … uncertain and unfazed by the inevitable, living life to the fullest.”

After he passed, the New York Times posted a video he made: “Hi. I’m Art Buchwald, and I just died.”

Yes, he truly died laughing.

In last week’s column, I described how in 1967, as a 22-year-old college kid, I met humorist Art Buchwald. As he read one of my columns, a flick of his humor wrist over my byline in my school newspaper made an indelible impression on me …

Wolfsie, stay out of my racket! – Art Buchwald In 2005, Art Buchwald entered hospice in Washington, D.C., prompting me to write a column about that first encounter. Friends suggested I send the essay to the facility where Mr. Buchwald was spending his final days.

I stuffed a couple of newspapers containing my Buchwald column into an envelope and included a short note describing our brief meeting four decades earlier. I didn’t expect my package to reach him. He probably got thousands of cards and letters.

A month later, I received those same two newspaper clips in the mail. And there, above my byline, scribbled in his very recognizable but somewhat shaky handwriting, were the following: To Dick Wolfsie: Anyone who writes a column about me can’t be all bad. – Art Buchwald

REA D ER ’ S V I E W Add balance to columns to build bridges with readers Editor, I have been living in Zionsville and receiving Current for the past year. The editorial section “From the Backshop” has been increasingly hard to swallow. I understand that it is an opinion column, but I wondered if you would be open to publishing a more left-leaning column as well.

This particular week was especially bothersome to me. In the portion about Meryl Streep not commenting on the beating by “thugs” (a term that incidentally is only used for black people it seems), why not say that she should have commented on the sentencing of Dylan Roof? Why should she not speak about the insults and mocking actions of our president-elect if she so chooses? Because he is a white man and she had an opportunity to point out crime caused by black men? She was correct in her speech. His mocking actions and disrespect have a trickle-down effect ... all the way to our editorial column in the news magazine that comes weekly to my house, with or without me subscribing.

I think it would be an excellent addition to add a column for balance. You perhaps would build a bridge and stop further alienation of your readers. I would like to think in this current political climate we are all interested in building bridges rather than distancing ourselves further apart.

Throughout their lives, Ray and Debbie Head have been eclectic entrepreneurs. Before finding their passion entrepreneUrs in the wedding industry, the Heads owned an array of businesses, from a roller skating rink to a deli to a balloon store, among other enterprises. Their businesses have taken them from Indiana to Michigan to California.

The Heads’ daughters, Zionsville Community High School graduates Jess Strickland and Jenny Burger, remember what it was like to grow up with parents possessed by an entrepreneurial spirit.

“We were raised in the roller skating rink, where we came of age, and basically we had jobs at (ages) 6 or 7 picking up trash and stuff,” Jess said. “We would get rewarded by getting to play arcade games. That’s where we basically learned the role of self-employment, really, and it’s never stopped.”

The couple, who both graduated from Pike High School and now live in Westfield, missed Hoosier hospitality and returned to Indiana.

That’s when they found an opportunity in the Palomino Ballroom, 481 S 1200 E, Zionsville, which they purchased 15 years ago.

The family celebrated Ray’s 50th birthday with a party, at which their friends encouraged them to dive into the party business.

“People kept saying we threw the best parties, and people kept saying, ‘Could we throw a party for them?’ and it evolved from there,” Debbie said.

The Heads purchased the Palomino Ballroom and eventually added property to create the 60 acres of the event venue’s current size. Multiple businesses are run out of the

He is a pilot for the Indianapolis Executive Airport.

“I think what’s so unique about this story is if you had asked any of us 20 years ago, ‘Do you think you will all end up in the wedding business and all end up on the same property?’ we all would have had a resounding, ‘No way,’” Jess said. “But we are a faith-based family, and it’s been an amazing blessing.”

“We all live here on this property, too,” Ray said. “Our property runs from County Line Road to Joliet Road. The houses back there we built ourselves.”

Jenny said having her parents and sister and brother-in-law and their children on the same property has created a family support system.

Debbie’s mother also lives on the property — creating four generations in four homes, all on the same property as the family’s business.

Residing in the gray area between two counties also serves its purpose, as the Heads are involved with the Zionsville Lions Club and the Hamilton North, Westfield and Zionsville chambers of commerce. Being on County Line Road, the Palomino Ballroom is on Westfield property but has a Zionsville address because its mailbox is across the street.

“It’s grown tremendously,” Deb said of the ballroom. “We’ve grown along right with Westfield.”

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com With safety and security among top issues for meeting planners, according to the International Association of Venue Managers, a Carmel entrepreneur has created an app to help event planners zWORKS and operators quickly respond to a variety of potential issues, ranging from a lost child to an active shooter.

Playbook is the first product launched by Jim Martin’s company, Venue Intelligence. The app allows event organizers, venue operators and first responders to quickly share information electronically.

Martin Martin previously helped establish disaster scenario plans for Simon Property Group, which inspired him to create something that could be quickly and easily available.

“When minutes matter, don’t send people running for a binder,” said Martin, whose office is in zWORKS, Zionsville’s coworking space.

The app allows all those involved in an event access to procedures and plans and can immediately be changed and updated so volunteers will quickly know what to do in a situation without having to track down the right person with the right information, Martin said.

“It’s the ability to leverage what we’re all carrying in our pocket,” he said.

Martin drew a parallel to disaster protocols to the last scene of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” during which the ark is shelved among thousands of artifacts after all the effort to acquire it.

“You do all this work to build policies and procedures, and then you park it,” he said. “The people who need it aren’t even part of that planning process.”

Most of his clients run events, such as the Big Ten Tournament, Indy 500 and the Louisiana Marathon.

Keeping an eye on London Commentary by Don Knebel A large wheel has become one of London’s most popular attractions, identifying the city in the same way travel the Eiffel Tower identifies Paris.

It also now identifies an iconic American brand.

In 1993, Londoners were asked for ideas for a structure that would celebrate the coming millennium and could become a symbol of the city. The winner was a large Ferris wheel giving visitors an opportunity to view the city from above. On December 31, 1999, Prime Minister Tony Blair officially opened the so-called London Eye, erected along the south bank of the River Thames just north of the Palace of Westminster. When it opened, the 443-foot-tall Eye was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world.

Having since been eclipsed in height by several other wheels, it is now described as the world’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel.

The Eye has 32 capsules, one for each of London’s boroughs. The capsules, each capable of carrying 25 people, move at about 0.6 miles per hour. Riders enter the capsules

while they are moving and exit 30 minutes later after a single revolution. From the glassenclosed capsules, riders, who are free to stand, get a bird’s eye view of London’s most famous landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the houses of Parliament. On a clear day, riders can see for more than 25 miles, about the distance to Windsor Castle. Since its opening, the Eye has carried more than 50 million riders, more than 5,000 of whom have gotten engaged during their rides.

In January 2015, London’s now iconic wheel became known as the Coca-Cola London Eye, with attendants dressed in red uniforms and the wheel bathed at night in red light. Protesters greeted the sponsorship arrangement by passing out toothbrushes, symbolizing the tooth decay they claimed was caused by consuming the sponsor’s products.

• Beer sales will increase by tens of millions of dollars during Super Bowl week, and some police departments have noticed a dramatic increase in drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday.

Here are two great recipes to satisfy both the sweet and savory cravings at your Super Bowl party.

Crispy peanut butter balls Ingredients: • 2 cups creamy peanut butter • 1/2 cup butter, softened • 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar • 3 cups Rice Krispies cereal • 4 cups chocolate chips • 1/4 cup shortening Directions: Beat peanut butter and butter together in a large bowl until well blended. Slowly mix in powdered sugar until smooth. Stir in cereal.

Shape into 1-inch balls. Refrigerate until firm. Melt chocolate chips and shortening in a bowl in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth.

Dip balls into chocolate using a toothpick. Tap on the side of the bowl to allow excess chocolate to drip off. Place balls on parchment paper, sprinkle with nonpareil bits and allow to dry.

Beer and cheese pretzel dip Ingredients • 12 oz. cream cheese • 5 c. shredded Cheddar • 12 oz. Beer • Fresh chives, for garnish • Pretzel bites, for serving Directions: In a mini slow-cooker, combine cream cheese, cheddar and beer. Cover and cook on low, stirring well every 10 minutes until warmed through and creamy, about 1 hour. Garnish with chives and serve with pretzel bites.

King to direct ‘Joseph’ again

King performed on the Chicago and Toronto touring production from 1993 to 1995, with Donny Osmond playing Joseph.

For the seventh time since leaving the tour, King will be involved with the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber musical when he directs and choreographs it from Feb. 2 to March 26 at Beef & Boards, 9301 Michigan Rd. There will be 56 performances in the production, sponsored in part by Current Publishing. King also directed and choreographed the musical two previous times at Beef & Boards.

“We’ve got a great cast put together,” said King, who will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his first show at Beef & Boards this summer. “I try to use the personalities of the people playing the roles and see what traits they can bring to the table to add to the role. I try to personalize it to each cast member instead of saying you have to do it this way.”
