Parks Board approves officers, project funds – The Zionsville Board of Parks & Recreation elected officers for the new year at its Jan. 14 meeting. Steven Bullington will serve as president, Dorothy Hitchins as vice president and Manda Clevenger as secretary. The board also approved up to $10,000 for drainage improvements along the Zionsville Rail Trail, $5,000 for the 2015 recreation grant program and an amount not to exceed $1,500 for appraisals of a property that could potentially serve as a future site for relocating the Nature Center.

Pataky finds firefighting his calling

Justin Pataky found he wasn’t suited for a desk job as a tax accountant.

“I was tired of sitting beachievement hind a desk all day,” Pataky said. “I was looking for something more hands-on and exciting.”

At the suggestion of his friend Brian Miller, the Zionsville Fire Department Deputy Chief, Pataky checked out the fire department and was hooked with what he witnessed.

Pataky, 33, started as a volunteer in 2008 and was hired as a full-time firefighter in January of 2011.

At last year’s Firefighters’ Ball Awards, Pataky was named the Firefighter of the Year. The awards were voted on by Pataky’s peers.

“It’s very humbling,” said Pataky, a 1999 Zionsville High School graduate. “It’s good to be honored by your peers. It pushes all of us to get better.”

This year’s Firefighters’ Ball Awards Banquet will be held on Feb. 7 in the Cardinal Room at Golf Club of Indiana, 6905 South 535 East, Lebanon. Other awards to be given at the banquet are EMT of the Year, Paramedic of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

Pataky said the best part of being a firefighter is the ability to do something that is selfless.

“It sounds cliche, but it’s nice to go out and help people,” Pataky said. “We show up on people’s worst day whether they’re sick, have a house fire or been in a car crash. To us it’s our job. To them it’s something horrific. It’s very rewarding to help guide

people through that and hopefully at the end of the day we help them have a better outcome than when they called for us.”

Pataky, whose shift is 24 hours on and then 48 hours off, is working at Station 92, 992 S. US 421.

The Firefighters’ Ball is the biggest fundraiser of the year, Pataky said. The funds raised go to fire-fighting safety equipment, Janice VanGorder, president of ZFD Support Service said. VanGorder’s husband James is the fire chief.

“It’s also nice for us to interact with people that way instead of a 911 emergency type situation,” Pataky said of the banquet.

The 15th annual Firefighters’ Ball starts with cocktails at 6 p.m. There will be dinner, dancing and a silent auction. The event is open to the public and tickets are $50. The tickets are available at Zionsville Fire Department Headquarters, 1100 W. Oak St., Zionsville, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or by calling 8735358. RSVP is requested by Jan. 30.

Other awards issued at last year’s banquet were to Mitch Young, EMT of the Year; Nichole Moss, Paramedic of the Year and Matt Coyner, Rookie of the Year. A citation award was given to Zionsville Police Department officer Adam Harper for assisting in delivering a newborn infant on scene.

Lifesaving awards were given to firefighters Andrew Thomas and Andy Henthorn, firefighters/paramedics Evan Maher and Scott Mamaril and Deputy Chief Brian Miller and Lori Cravens, the victim’s wife, for life-saving action taken with a witnessed cardiac arrest. Jon “Chip” Cravens, the victim, presented the award to each individual.

Online registration open for ZCS preschool – Online registration is open to Zionsville residents for the Zionsville Community Schools preschool program, which will be available in all five elementary schools and Zionsville West Middle School in the upcoming school year. Online registration will open for nonZionsville residents beginning at noon Jan. 21.

Town among best for young families

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville is one of the best cities in Indiana for young families, according to a ranking recently released by personal finance website Nerdwallet.

The town placed achievement seventh out of 106 cities considered. Fishers took the top spot followed by Westfield, Granger, Brownsburg, Avon and Carmel.

Zionsville’s strong schools, proximity to Indianapolis and downtown Village area helped propel it to the top 10.

Molly Donofrio agreed that those factors influenced her family’s decision to choose Zionsville.

Donofrio, her husband and three young children moved to town in September.

“Looking at things on paper, Zionsville and Carmel were the top choices because of the schools,” she said. “But the second we pulled onto (Zionsville’s) Main Street I said ‘This is it, this is where we’ll live.’”

Moving to Zionsville just a few days before the annual Fall Festival validated the family’s decision.

“I grew up in a small town with a strong-knit community,” Donofrio said. “This immediately had the same feel. The community vibe is evident.”

Councilwoman Candace Ulmer agrees that Zionsville has a great sense of community.

“We are unique having urban, suburban, rural living and all each has to offer within our one

town,” she said. “As (NerdWallet) points out, from an economic perspective, Zionsville is a good value for your dollar.”

Ulmer admits there is room for improvement in terms of amenities for some demographics, but “we have much to offer families and I think our senior population has services and entertainment opportunities.”

This is the second year for the survey. NerdWallet’s analysis considered several factors: home affordability, prosperity and growth, quality of education and family friendliness.

Zionsville wasn’t a contender in the 2013 ranking, which considered cities with a population of 25,000 or more. Last year Carmel and Fishers took the respective first and second ranking.

This year’s survey considered locations with populations greater than 5,000. The Nerdwallet website offers online personal finance and credit card comparison services.

Zionsville Girl Scouts and their troop leaders recently sampled the newest addition to the annual cookie sale lineup: fundraiser Rah Rah Raisins. The annual Cookie Rally on Jan. 9 allowed Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors to learn about the cookies, selling safety tips and prizes available for top sellers.

Attendees tasted four of the eight types of cookies that are being sold in Central Indiana this year, including Rah Rah Raisins — an oatmeal cookie with raisins and Greek yogurt-flavored chunks. The other new item for the Indiana market, Toffee-tastic, will be available to the public in February but cannot be pre-ordered through a Girl Scout. The cookie is described as a “rich, buttery cookie packed with golden toffee bits bursting with flavor,” according to Girl Scout materials, and is gluten-free.

Area Girl Scouts will take pre-orders for cookies, which cost $4 a box, through Jan. 23. Cookie booths will be set up at public retailers such as grocery and hardware stores throughout Central Indiana in February and early March. Also new this year is the ability to process credit card orders. While individual scouts will not be able to process cards by selling door-to-door, the cookie booths will have that option available.

What do you like about living in Zionsville?

“The size. It’s friendly, it’s quiet, particularly here in the Willow neighborhood. With the lake behind us, it’s very secluded, it has lots of wildlife and it makes the trip up to see my grandkids in Chicago much shorter, being on the west side of town.”

What is your favorite restaurant around town?

“We like Bub’s Burgers (we’ve eaten there a bunch of times), DC’s Pub and the Friendly Tavern. Cobblestone Grill is pretty good, too!”

Do you have favorite dishes from any of those places?

“Well, really any of the burgers at Bub’s, and from the Friendly Tavern I like the blackened catfish.”

Where do you work and what is your position?

“I became a professional photographer after I retired from Lilly, but I’ve been doing it for around 25 years. I shoot events, nature and sports, and I work a lot with the Indiana Sports Corporation and I’ve shot their events for the last 25 years. I also work for the Natatorium and the National Swimming Magazine.”

What made you interested in photography?

“I used to do it as a young kid, and then got away from it because other things were taking place in my life. Then, when I was a medical school professor, to have charts and tables and such for classes, I had learned some dark room skills and created and photographed my own. I found that I kind of liked doing that. This was at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, which is affiliated with Virginia Commonwealth University. I just walked into their athletic department and said I’d like to shoot their games, and right there they handed me credentials and said ‘Go do it!’

Zionsville man named Frankfort Officer of the Year

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Consistency, dedication and leadership are among the reasons Chad R. Walker of Zionsville received the Frankfort Police Department 2014 Officer of the Year award, presented Jan. 3 at an annual banquet. Walker, who is originally from Lebanon, has served in achievement the department since Jan. 2007.

“If you look at Chad, he’s deeply dedicated to his job and understands his responsibility that he has as a police officer,” said Troy Bacon, Frankfort Chief of Police. “He does his job very, very well every day.”

The Officer of the Year award is given to an individual whose efforts go above and beyond normal duties and requirements involving outstanding performance, professionalism, superior judgement, sensitivity and leadership.

Department supervisors are known to turn to Walker, an informal leader of the department, to help Walker problem solve, said Bacon. Walker is also known for consistency and dedication, having achieved perfect attendance in 2014.

“Officer Walker is very deserving of this award,” said Bacon, adding that he “continually displays exceptional performance, professionalism and leadership in serving our residents and the Frankfort community.”

As a patrolman, Walker received a commendation in 2013, being recognized as someone who went beyond normal duties, achieved high standards and positively represented the department.

Also recognized at the 2014 awards banquet was a 35-year veteran of the force, Captain James R. Skinner, who received the 2014 Chief’s Distinguished Supervisor Award.

Small-town roots help ZCHS grad make Forbes 30 Under 30 list

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • annmarie@youarecurrent.com For the past several years, Nooka Jones has embraced the grandiosity of New York City, from savoring international cuisine at will to commuting everywhere without a car. cover story He loves living in the nation’s biggest city, but he’s quick to acknowledge that his small town roots played a major role in helping him achieve a prestigious national honor.

Earlier this month, Nooka, 26, was named to the Forbes 2015 30 Under 30 list, an annual compilation that recognizes the country’s up-and-coming leaders in 20 categories. Jones is on the Marketing and Advertising list; other honorees this year include actress Emma Stone, NFL quarterback Joe Flacco and musician Iggy Azalea.

A 2006 Zionsville Community High School graduate, Jones is a marketing manager for Google Creative Lab, where he promotes and designs, new products and initiatives. He said he felt honored by the recognition and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from family and friends.

“I’ve received a lot of praise from a lot of people and a lot of congratulations,” Jones said. “People I had lost touch with, especially in Zionsville, have reached out and said some kind words.”

From Zionsville to New York City

Born James Nicholas Jones, the young Zionsville resident adopted the nickname “Nooka” after a family friend invented the moniker during a visit to a lake cabin. The name stuck as Jones advanced through the Zionsville Community School system.

His years at ZCHS played a key role in setting Jones on the road to success in his work and personal life, he said.

“There are specific people I can point to from high school in particular that really helped Forbes recently named Nooka Jones to its 2015 30 Under 30 list in the Marketing and Advertising category. shape my work ethic and provide a great role model for how to act professionally,” Jones said.

One of those people is Aaron Coates, a Zionsville Community High School teacher who directed Jones in choir, music and drama programs. He remembers his former student as bright, personable, creative and extremely perceptive.

“He was able to Nooka Jones gradu flourish under really ated from Zionsville Co loose guidelines and mmunity High School in 20 make something really 06. cool, which speaks to his creativity,” Coates said. “He would work and spend hours to get it just right, which is probably one of the reasons he is where he is.”

After graduating from high school, Jones attended Boston University to major in communications. It was there that he began building and designing websites to market specific school programs. He also helped launch a division within a student-run ad agency, gaining valuable experience along the way.

By the time he graduated, Jones had discovered that he enjoyed living in a big city and jumped at the chance to move to New York City when offered an internship there. The digital agency hired him full-time after only four weeks. Three years later, he became a freelancer for Google and accepted a full time position there in mid-2014.

Loving his work

A typical day at the office for Jones includes plenty of meetings and collaboration with workers from many of Google’s divisions, including Google X and Google Glass. He works with the other marketing managers in the Google Creative Lab “to remind people what they love about Google,” he said.

Although he’s achieved great success in his short career, Jones has even bigger ambitions for the future. He hopes to one day launch his own business that combines his expertise in marketing and technology with his love of music. He hopes the accolade from Forbes will make it easier for that dream to become a reality. “[The honor] validates my hard work. It shows that I’ve tried to redefine myself and my skill set,” he said. “If I want to ever have my own company, maybe this will provide more liquidity, or investors might be more interested in investing in me because I’ve been a part of something like this.”

For now, Jones is happy to continue his work at Google. He plans to remain in New York City long term while returning to Zionsville two or three times a year to visit family and friends.

“Mostly, I want to keep enjoying coming to work every day,” he said.

Nooka's other job When he’s not at the Google Creative Lab, Nooka Jones can often be found at parties around New York City working as a DJ. He got into the profession as a teenager in Zionsville and continued to develop his style through a college station radio show, an internship in London and through a music collective called Percussion Lab. Jones enjoys both the strategic challenges he faces at his day job and the opportunity to let his creative juices flow at night.

“They really balance each other out,” he said. “I have outlets for two different parts of my brain.”

Remembering my uncle’s full life Commentary by Ward Degler My uncle Bob Pierce died last week. He was 94, and he and my Aunt Tiny would have been married for 75 years come April.

Plain talk They were quite literally a dynamic duo, and I’m sure God put them together deliberately and then broke the mold. Their lives were so intertwined that I can’t write about one without including the other. Tiny is 95 now, and except for being a little shorter and slower than she used to be, still going strong.

She and Bob nourished each other every day, I think, and the litany of their accomplishments over the years is nothing short of awesome.

My first memory came when I was three years old. Bob and Tiny weren’t married yet, but they were already finishing one another’s sentences.

I recall they laughed a lot and seemed to share jokes no one else knew about.

Bob was fascinated by anything new. When World War II ended, a man named Duncan invented the yo-yo and hired demonstrators to show them off. Bob could do everything with a yo-yo: Walk the Dog, Around the World, you name it. If a yo-yo could do it, Bob could make it happen. While the craze lasted, he sold a lot of yo-yos.

A couple years later he bought one of the first Saab automobiles. It had a two-cylinder, twostroke engine that generated 25 horsepower at 65 miles an hour. Years later I recognized that the whirring sound it made was the same sound my

lawnmower made.

Bob had a lot of fun with the car because it looked weird, got great gas mileage and because the gas and oil were mixed together, he could tell the startled gas station attendant to “pour a quart of oil in the gas tank.” He chuckled about that for years.

When the sport of Volkswalking migrated from Germany to the United States, Bob and Tiny joined the throng. The events featured a six-mile walk through a scenic area in every state, and before they hung up their walking shoes, my aunt and uncle had Volkswalked in all 50 states. Oregon, I believe, was done in a torrential rain, and they saw “nothing but the mud in front of us.” They kept saying they wanted to go back and do that one over.

“Maybe we can see something next time,” he said.

When Tiny was 84, she finished the Mini-Marathon. Then to prove it wasn’t a lark, she did it again the next year. Bob was in the cheering section both times.

Life for them was joyful, even when times were hard. Instead of a funeral, Tiny told me she would plan a memorial in April.

“To celebrate our 75th anniversary,” she said.

School board OKs building controls

The board approved $98,010 for building controls upgrades.

What it means: Once the upgrades are complete, district officials can control air conditioning, heat and lighting systems quickly from a single remote location. The current system is slow and becoming outdated, making it impractical to make adjustments when the district has a twohour delay or other schedule change. The new system is expected to save time and money.

What’s next: The new system is planned to be constructed between March and September, and it is expected to be completely functional by the end of October.

The board received an update on the district’s virtualization upgrades.

What it means: In June, the board green-lighted plans to virtualize equipment and computer programs, which would allow students and teachers to access classroom software and materials from any device connected to the Internet. Virtualization is underway at district middle schools and the high school, where it has been well-used and received. The virtualization program is expected to save the district money in several ways, such as minimizing the number of computers it must replace.

What’s next: Virtualization is expected to come to the elementary schools in the coming months with all schools up and running by the end of the semester.

The board approved new officers and took a salary cut for the upcoming year.

What it means: Shari Alexander Richey is now serving as board president; Jane Burgess is vice president; and Joe Stein is secretary. The board unanimously agreed to accept a salary of $1 per year (the lowest amount allowed to legally be considered an employee) to show their commitment to saving money across the district. The annual salary was previously set at $2,000.

What’s next: The officers will serve in their new roles for one year. In January 2016, the board will once again vote on reorganization and salary.

The Board of Finance held its annual meeting before the regular school board meeting.

What it means: Every year the district is required to hold a meeting of the Board of Finance, which is comprised of the same officials who serve on the school board. The board is tasked with reviewing the district’s investment policy. The annual report showed that the district earned $71,158.59 in interest earnings in 2014, which is more than triple the earnings in the previous year. The report states that the increase is due in part to the district coordinating an investment strategy with the Town of Zionsville.

What’s next: The Board of Finance is not expected to meet again until January 2016.

Where only true leaders are needed We’re sure you’ve heard the fallout about President Barack Obama’s no-show at the Paris anti-terrorism march, which drew “dozens of world leaders” on Jan. 11. Quite frankly, we don’t understand what all the fuss is about. Everything we’ve read and heard about the incident emphasized how the event drew “world leaders,” several of which represent some of America’s closest allies, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French President Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron, Spanish Minister Mariana Rajoy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, among others. In Obama’s defense, the key words are, as we see it, “world leaders,” and, as such, Obama simply doesn’t qualify. Therefore, we don’t see reason for the uproar regarding his absence. As the White House fumbled for a response to enquiring reporters, it cited security concerns as one reason behind his absence; however, it was comforting to know security standards were met when, on the day following the march, Jan. 12, the “leader of the free world” accepted a San Antonio Spurs jersey, when he honored the team’s 2014 NBA championship. Brave soul, he.

••• College football crowned its first playoff champion last Monday, when Ohio State defeated Oregon in the inaugural game. On the non-football side of the equation, it was refreshing to see a Super Bowl-type atmosphere functioning not with corporate types in the stands and at the various related venues, but with true fans of the teams or college football in general. Bands, cheerleaders, stadium-wide chants … it all made for a fine experience, when the opposite could have happened.

••• An American Beauty: This one takes the rose. As one of us unwrapped his dry cleaning the other day and took out a shirt, the hanger was covered by paper on which was imprinted “Caution: Do Not Swallow.” That’s rich!

The elephant in the room

Can being polite ever be a bad thing? In the Victorian age, we were encumbered with a plethora of topics deemed “impolite” and to be avoided, especially in mixed company, at all costs.

Money, sex, health, politics and religion all made the taboo list. And, in many Asian cultures, the interaction between a woman and her physician was greatly restricted, providing an ivory doll to which the stricken female was to demurely point to the general region of discomfort so that the attending doctor could plot a course of medical treatment. It would seem that death by embarrassment was a real possibility.

How much more enlightened and insightful have we become? Our society will openly discuss all manner of Kardashian proclivity in prime time.

The Family Guy reminds our youth from the time they jump off the bus until the wee hours of the morning that there is no taboo that should not be transgressed. One could certainly debate the merits of this kind of open discourse; but, it

is pointless to imagine that we’d ever return to an era where important, even life-endangering, matters are not openly discussed. Yet as our malls have become little more than stadiums for the Ultimate Gang Fighting Championships and innocent police officers are executed in some imagined noble quest of retaliation, why do we still blush if someone acknowledges that the culture of a community might be a consideration in the conversation about how to improve our social ailments? Anyone with an Internet connection and the inclination can review scores of videos of shopping center hoodlums terrorizing shopkeepers and customers alike. Shouldn’t we be talking about what we see? If there is an elephant in the room, does our shamed silence really help?

News flash: If you dislike my column, DON’T READ IT! Seriously, no one is making you sit down with your cup of organic coffee and peruse my articles. Turn the page, avert your eyes, or simply toss the paper straight into recycling. But don’t e-mail to tell me I’m a terrible mother or that my husband Doo is an abusive spouse. Don’t send letters that ask how in the world my children will remain out of prison and/or fat camp or how I must find Jesus to save my soul from eternal damnation (a path I’m clearly on!) You can certainly keep on judging me and my choices; I’m just asking that you keep the mean stuff to yourself.

I’m not exactly sure where the current string of personal criticism was spawned. I’ve kept my topics non-controversial and rather benign, and focused mostly on the antics of my four children and bald Sugar Daddy. Until last week, I’d had a fairly good run of little to no hate mail. Nevertheless, recent expressions of “distaste” dictate the need for the following reminders about my column.

• I’m a math teacher with neither a degree in English nor in journalism. I rely on my good wits, Spellcheck, and my amazing editors to keep me in the “language clear.” Occasionally I invent words or deliberately [meaning: on purpose] defy the laws of grammar. Basically, I write how I speak, which almost always includes nonsensical vocabulary and incomplete sentences. So there.

• Doo and I have been married for 18 years.

We still laugh a lot, enjoy spending time together and periodically frustrate the bejeesus out of each other. I choose to share the aggravating moments because they’re far more interesting and entertaining. This should in no way imply that we’re headed for divorce. Trenton again, perhaps, but not divorce.

• I believe my children are healthy, happy and acceptably well-adjusted. True, they fight incessantly, have messy rooms, don’t make their school sports’ teams, sometimes eat PopTarts for dinner, are addicted to all forms of “electronical” devices, and occasionally get grounded for bad grades. I imagine they’re like most kids. I’m not ruling out future therapy or incarceration, I’m just saying they are normal.

• My writing motto is and always has been, “Keep it Real!” If you want to read about Stepford wives, look elsewhere.

So let’s keep the meanness to yourselves, people! Peace out.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie What makes great one-liners? They are often wonderful insights, plays on words humor or mis-directions in thinking. Below are just a few of my favorites that I collected during the year 2014. Some are far older than that, but they were new to me and made me smile. I hope they do the same for you.

Brass group Masterworks 6 performs at ZPAC

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Take two trumpets and a tuba, a french horn and trombone, plus some drums. Mix in a healthy dose of Queen, a dash of Jimi Hendrix and a dab of Duke Ellington. The result is concert Masterworks 6, which consists of six members who jump from classic rock to classic swing. Their brass instruments simulate guitar solos and vocal measures from popular as well as classical pieces.

Masterworks 6 will appear at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., Feb. 6 as part of a fundraiser by Zionsville Band and Orchestra Patrons ­— a parent support group for the high school’s instrumental music program — along with local group Willoughby Sprig.

“It’s incredible that they can make the music they do without guitars and other traditional instruments,” said ZBOP parent Erika Revercomb. “I think adults will be more familiar with the classic rock tunes, but students will have a blast seeing how rock music is performed with traditional brass instruments.”

Masterworks 6 members have master’s or doctorate degrees in their respective instruments, with many receiving their degrees from various Indiana universities. Some members also perform with professional orchestras while others teach at the collegiate level. Part of their mission statement is to “motivate, educate and entertain students with the hope they will be inspired to express themselves through the art of music.” Through this they plan to spend time with high school instrumental students

during the school day and make a connection with the students.

The first half of the feature length concert will showcase Masterworks 6 performing tunes from the big band era with classic rock in the second half of the program. The second half will also feature Zionsville Community High School music students on stage performing two classic rock selections.

Preceding the 7 p.m. performance will be folk group Willoughby Sprig. The four-piece ensemble has special ties to Zionsville with all members being ZCHS graduates, even meeting when they were at Eagle Elementary School together.

chance to perform there as part of the school orchestra,” said band member Nicholas Burrus, who initially formed the group with his twin brother Chris. “To come back as a professional on that stage and in that facility is very gratifying.”

Thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, Willoughby Sprig was able to record their first professionally recorded album a year ago. “It was the right time to do it. We were getting a lot of support,” Burrus said.

He appreciates the support of fans as well as his former teacher Tom Landrum, ZCHS director of bands. “He was always about making the most of our talent and has always been keeping an eye on us, trying to get our musical career going,” Burrus said.

Landrum recalled the Burrus brothers’ first efforts and described their current style as “a combination of music from the Renaissance with bluegrass and their own twist.”

With the performances by two groups, Landrum hopes to bring some variety to the evening. “Masterworks 6 instrumentation is like a brass quintet; brass with a percussionist performing rock and roll.”

Willoughby Sprig provides a completely different style utilizing several more obscure instruments such as the mountain dulcimer and the mandolin.

Cook pasta in boiling water until al dente, about seven minutes. Drain water, and add pasta to the slow cooker. Simmer for a few minutes, and season with salt and pepper before serving.

Behind Bars: Two Minute Party Punch Original Recipe makes 36 cups Ingredients: Two 2-liter bottles ginger ale. Two 2-liter bottles strawberry flavored soda. 2 cups lemon sherbet. 1/2 (16 ounce) package sliced frozen strawberries.

Directions: Pour the ginger ale and strawberry soda into a punch bowl. Scoop the lemon sherbet into the punch bowl, and stir in the sliced strawberries.

What’s wrong with sugar? Part II Commentary by Dawn Parker In my last article I discussed the negatives of consuming a lot of sugar. So, you may wonder, what about using artificial sweeteners diet instead of sugar? Many diet foods, or foods aimed at the calorie conscious, replace sugar with artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, etc.

Despite being promoted for weight loss and having a star role in many diet foods and drinks, artificial sweeteners have not been shown to help with weight loss. As a matter of fact, some studies actually find artificial sweeteners promote weight gain. One reason for this is that they can cause increased hunger and cravings for carbohydrates and sweet foods.

Many side effects are also associated with artificial sweeteners. According to mercola.com, aspartame accounts for more than 75 percent of side effects reported to the FDA for all food additives. The complaints are widely varied and there are more than 90 different side effects listed. Entire documentaries report on the dangers of aspartame ­­— if you’d like to learn more, Sweet Deception and Sweet Misery are two I recommend.

One common use of aspartame is in diet soda.

I believe everyone knows at this point that soda

is not a health food. But what many people don’t realize is that diet soda is no better than regular soda and may actually be worse. Diet soda doesn’t have the 10 teaspoons or more of sugar found in regular soda, but it can increase cravings for carbs and sugar and has been shown to increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and other health issues. Of course, this doesn’t even take into account those 90 reported side effects I mentioned earlier.

Another common place aspartame (and other artificial sweeteners like acesulfame potassium, sucralose and others) lurks is in sugar-free gum.

My suggestion would be to give up gum, but if you really want gum in your life, choose one with a different sweetners like non-GMO xylitol (which has conveniently been shown to help prevent cavities).

In my final article in this three-part series, I will discuss sweeteners that are better than plain refined sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Plus I’ll share which ones I use and recommend to clients trying to improve their nutrition.

Banquet to honor best in biz

Despite contrary claims, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome remains the world’s largest church, featuring the world’s tallest dome. Roman travel Catholics are more inspired by what they believe is its link to the bones of St. Peter, whom they consider their first pope.

In 319, newly Christian Roman Emperor Constantine ordered a massive basilica built over a small shrine in a cemetery adjacent the Circus of Nero. Local Christians claimed the shrine marked the grave of Peter, the disciple of Jesus they believed was crucified in 64 A.D. near an obelisk, plundered from Egypt, near the center of the circus. Constantine’s church, named for Peter, became one of the most important churches in Christendom.

In 1505, the original St. Peter’s had fallen into disrepair and Pope Julius II decided to build a new basilica on the site. Numerous designs, all including a dome surpassing Brunelleschi’s astounding dome on the Florence Cathedral, were proposed by a series of noted architects, including Rafael. For various reasons, those designs were never built. In 1547, a frustrated Pope Paul III conscripted Michelangelo, then 72, to take over

the project and he is credited with creating the overall plan for the current building. In 1586, with construction underway, the obelisk from the Circus of Nero was placed in front of the basilica as a tribute to Peter, with a cross placed atop an apex designed to point toward Egypt’s sun god.

Completed in 1626, St. Peter’s Basilica encloses almost five acres. The signature dome rises 448 feet, 160 feet higher than the United States Capitol dome.

Today, the body of Pope John XXIII is displayed behind glass on the main floor of St. Peter’s and that of Pope Saint John Paul II is entombed near Michelangelo’s famous pieta. They join at least 89 other popes buried in and under the church that Roman Catholics since Constantine have believed lies over the tomb of St. Peter. In the 1940s, archaeologists uncovered a handful of bones beneath St. Peter’s main altar later determined to belong to a man in his 60s. The faithful have no doubt the man’s name was Peter.

Rearranging a floor plan for better flow

EXISTING HOME: After fulfilling a dream of purchasing a river side home in the heart of downtown Noblesville, blueprint for the homeowners set improvement out to update their 1940’s home to accommodate their love of family, cooking and reading.

“The house wasn’t set up for the way we live our daily lives. It lacked storage space for our book collection. The kitchen was so cramped that we couldn’t cook together as a couple and the dining room didn’t flow well for hosting our large family.”

NEW FLOOR PLAN: The kitchen was gutted and a wall removed to create one large open space. The adjacent living room was transformed into the new dining room. To improve the natural flow, the existing doorway leading into the family room was enclosed and two new doorways were added on each end of the wall. The improved floor plan functions better and allows space to add built-in bookcases in the family room and the new dining room.

KITCHEN DETAILS: Maple cabinetry in an “Arctic” finish fills the enlarged kitchen with abundant storage space. The multi-purpose island includes integrated shelving for cookbooks and seating space for three teenagers.
