Carmel, Zionsville pathway link planned

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Carmel and Zionsville are working together to coordinate the construction of a multi-use path along 116th Street that officials hope will be ready for construction in 2018. trails The path will extend east from Zionsville along 116th Street from Michigan Road and connect to Carmel’s existing pathway network.

This will “serve as the final link along 116th Street needed to connect Carmel and Zionsville,” said Dan McFeely, economic development and community relations spokesman for the City of Carmel.

The estimated cost of the project is $2.5 million, with Carmel and Zionsville funding amounts relative to the portion in their respective communities.

Seven hundred feet of the path will be in Boone County, with the total length of the pathway extending 11,420 feet, or roughly two miles.

Although Zionsville already has right-of-way for its portion of the project, some properties in Carmel will require land acquisition before the project can move forward.

“Due to a variety of factors, including the terrain, right-of-way and utilities, the path will be on the north side of 116th Street from Michgan Road to Shelbourne Road but will shift to the

south side of 116th from Shelbourne Road to Towne Road,” McFeely said.

A crosswalk will be added between University High School and West Park.

The entire pathway will be completed as one construction project.

“Obviously, we wouldn’t be enjoying economies of scale (otherwise),” said Lance Lantz, superintendent of the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept.

“It’s really a neat pathway link for those people who like to go between communities and have some longer recreational cycling opportunities, or walking or jogging,” Lantz said. “It’s a neat inter-agency gap that’s going to be filled.”

Course to strengthen nonprofits

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com A partnership between the Community Foundation of Boone County and the Lilly Family School fundraising of Philanthropy at IUPUI will provide for Certificate in Fundraising Management courses to local and surrounding county nonprofit leaders.

“During our last grant cycle, we had 32 local nonprofits submit proReynolds posals for funding. While they were all worthwhile causes, we just didn’t have the dollars to support them all,” said Kristi Reynolds, president and CEO of CFBC. “Our staff began brainstorming ways in which we could help support local needs on a larger scale. What better way to help nonprofits serve our community than to strengthen the nonprofit organizations themselves?”

The classes are nationally recognized, and attendees will leave with the “knowledge and credentials to take their programs to the next level,” Reynolds said.

Courses would normally cost more than $5,500 per person to complete on their own. However, Boone County nonprofits — or nonprofits that serve Boone County — can complete the certification courses for $1,000. Nonprofit leaders from surrounding counties can attend for $4,000. Community Impact Fund money will be used to support the program.

CFRM courses recognize and substantiate a commitment to fundraising leadership through the completion of four university courses. Classes to be offered are: • Principles and Techniques of Fundraising – March 13, 14, 20 and 21 • Developing Major Gifts – April 13, 20 and 21 • Developing Annual Sustainability – May 22 and 23 • Managing the Capital Campaign – June 15, 22 and 23 Space and funding are limited. Applications are due by Jan. 31. Priority will be given to nonprofit leaders, nonprofit fundraisers and nonprofit board members.

Firefighter’s ball to benefit ZFD

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Firefighters, staff and support services members will be recognized during the 17th annual Firefighter’s public safety Ball benefiting the Zionsville Fire Dept.

“The highlight of the event is we recognize certain emergency responses that are notable,” said administrative assistant Tiffany Howard, who has been with ZFD for 10 years.

“Usually, there’s a tear-jerker moment.”

Every employee of ZFD will be recognized with special annual awards in the categories of firefighter, rookie, EMT and paramedic. A business partner of the year also is recognized and often a civilian who has helped the department in some way.

Proceeds from the evening will be used to purchase safety equipment for the firefighters.

The Firefighter’s Ball & Awards Banquet will be held at the Golf Club of Indiana’s Cardinal Ballroom Feb. 11. The semi-formal evening will begin at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and a silent auction, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and an awards banquet at 8:15 p.m. followed by dancing.

Loose Threads helps the homeless

Prayer shawls are made for those in difficult times.

To provide love, caring and literally warmth, an organization called Loose Threads, based out of Zionsville Presbyterian Church, makes quilts for the homeless.

In partnership with the Homeless Initiative Program, the Zionsville volunteers gather every Thursday morning at ZPC to make quilts and prayer shawls. The HIP initiative is run by HealthNet in Indianapolis. Its goal is to help people in Marion County living on the streets reach self-sufficiency.

Loose Threads is open to all volunteers — regardless of affiliation — who want to help make a difference for the homeless. The group makes roughly 150 quilts per year, and operates through a relatively efficient assembly line that involves transforming woolen clothing, blankets and sweaters into flat, single-ply materials, cutting squares, artistically laying out the squares into an attractive quilt, sewing them together and then sewing on a backing. For kids, the quilts even contain a pocket to store a stuffed animal.

The group needs donations of 100 percent wool clothing or blankets, bolts of solid color fleece and skeins of soft yarn. They also are always looking for people who can sew, or are willing to learn.

Early cabinet maker prospers

By Terri Horvath • news@currentzionsville.com By the early 1900s, Mills and Cropper was one company that had prospered enough in Zionsville to expand back in the day its size and offering.

The business started in 1878 with E.S. Cropper, who was a cabinet and coffin maker at 150-160 S. Main St. When his daughter married John Mills, Cropper brought his new son-in-law into the business.

Mills also learned to be an undertaker. They expanded their service into offering dry goods, including ladies apparel.

Mills would even barter farm produce for merchandise, according to Ann Mills Miller in her oral history recorded for the book, “Zionsville The First One Hundred Years.” An interesting side note from her story is that the horse that pulled the company’s hearse also hauled the bass drum for the Zionsville Band concerts.

By 1907, Mills and Cropper saw the need for expansion. The new facility had two floors of furniture on the north side and a store room for dry goods on the south. In mid-1913, the company dissolved with Mills buying out the stock and opening the largest store in the southern part of Boone County.

featured new technology. An ad appearing July 4, 1913 indicated that “we have installed electric fans for the comfort of our customers.”

Let’s talk about snow plows Commentary by Ward Degler Seems like a good time to talk about snow plows, what with winter nipping at the back door and all. Most mornings you can tell if it snowed overnight plain talk by the grinding of the snow plow on the road. That, and the snow it plowed now blocking your driveway.

The first snow plows were made for trains. A heavy wedge-shaped device on the front of the locomotive cleared the tracks ahead. Anyone who remembers the scene from the movie “Doctor Zhivago” where the train is laboring through deep snow in the Urals will probably enjoy a romantic twinge at the thought of it. Even more so if you’ve also lived in the North Woods of Wisconsin and watched logging trains struggle through waist-deep drifts.

The first plows for roads were moved by horses. When the automobile came along around 1913, Good Roads Machinery Company of Kennett Square, Pa., built the first motorized snow plow for the New York City Street Cleaning Bureau.

Amazingly, Good Roads still manufactures plows at its factory in Dunn, N.C., a recently snow-bound place on the map that just got reacquainted with the finer workings of snow plows after years with little or no snow.

In 1923, brothers Hans and Even Overaasen of Norway invented the first snow plows for use on cars. I wonder if they knew then that one day half the pickup trucks and SUVs in the country would have snow plows attached to

their front bumpers.

Some places just naturally have lots of snow plows.

Green Bay, Wis., for example. If its fleet of plows was weaponized, it could probably win any war on the planet.

Actually, you can do a lot of damage with just the plow itself. Ask any unfortunate motorist who got drifted in on the highway and was buried out of sight of the plow driver.

My favorite snow plows are the plow-snow blower combos used to clear rural roads in Minnesota. These dump truck giants roar down the road at highway speeds, while the huge blower in front sends a fountain of snow a good 50 feet beyond the edge of the road.

Truth be told, that usually included the first 50 feet of my driveway as well. Those days I relied on an ancient Massey Harris tractor with a plow up front to keep my drive clear. Some days I relied on it two or three times a day.

These days my snow removal equipment consists of a single snow shovel and a kind and generous neighbor who has a plow on the front of his truck. Around the first of March snow removal will consist of waiting patiently for spring thaw.

“We started this program back in 1999 or 2000. My family was involved in 4-H, so we raised chicks and chickens. I talked to the 4-H leader at the time. He came up with the idea to hatch the chicks at the library, and the kids could adopt them and take care of them for a week or so,” Gangstad said. “From that point on, we started a program where the kids could take home chicks, take care of them and then they would go to a farm.”

Each child is given three newly hatched chicks to take home, after they learn how to care for them.

“Each child will take home three (chicks) and a brooder box. A brooder box has a light, the food, a water dish, the litter, the thermometer and everything they need to keep the chicks safe,” Gangstad said.

Children selected for the program must attend the class Feb. 9 with a parent. A student who participated in a previous year will talk about the experience.

At the end of the program, the kids bring the chicks back for a reunion party to discuss what they learned by caring for them.

“At the reunion party, they will hold their chicks and have about five minutes to talk about their chicks,” Gangstad said. “It’s the cutest thing you’ve ever seen.”

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Ryan Quick suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident on a rainy night in 2012. The original prognosis was cover story grim.

“We’ve gotten from the point where the doctors said he probably is not going to live to being able to stand up pretty much on his own,” said Bill Quick, his father. “He’s able to walk on his own. We’ve made a lot of progress in four years.”

The Quicks credit much of the recent progress to Better Bodies, a Zionsville fitness center that works with people of all skill levels and a variety of needs and goals, ranging from those wanting to get in shape to others recovering from devastating injuries or illnesses.

“The biggest thing that has helped is the enthusiasm of Mitch (Schroder) and his staff,” Bill said. “We found that to be infectious. I can’t get Ryan to do some of the things they get him to do. With other therapists, it seems to be more a job than a passion. It’s a passion here.”

Schroder, the owner of Better Bodies, works out of the center’s Zionsville gym at 7031 Mayflower Park Dr., which was his first fitness center. He also owns Better Bodies in the Chase Tower in Indianapolis and in the Village of West Clay in Carmel. Better Bodies also does personal training at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis and Roundtripper in Westfield.

“I really enjoy working with people to obtain their highest level of function,” Schroder said.

“We work with a lot of neurological situations, from spinal cord injuries to Parkinson’s disease, to all kinds of situations. It’s really fun when you can see someone go from a dependent to independent state. That’s one of the greatest feelings there is.”

After getting his master’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Iowa, Schroder startied working as a trainer at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana in Indianapolis.

He worked with racecar drivers, athletes and other physicians.

“They would request I see them after they left the hospital,” said Schroder, a Noblesville resident.

“That combined with this epiphany of why am I letting this happen to people when I can make a difference if we try to do things proactively.”

So Schroder started out on his own, visiting clients. Eventually, he opened his first center.

is a certified strength and conditioning coach.

“This means you are certified to work with all the professional and college teams and all the Olympic athletes,” said Schroder, who has several high-performance athletes come

through his fitness centers. “We’ve had people who have played in the NFL and NBA. All those (college) flags represent people who have earned scholarships through (training) here.”

Schroder said a dedicated staff helps.

‘One of the best motivators’ Kay Sutherlin of Zionsville was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease approximately 18 months ago and started coming to Better Bodies early in 2016. She also has had two surgeries on her back.

“I’m very pleased with what Mitch (Schroder) and Better Bodies has been doing,” said Steve Sutherlin, her husband. “They’ve been keeping her active in terms of letting the legs work. I think it’s really paid off. I think Mitch is really one of the best motivators I’ve seen in terms of getting them to do something. My wife has

improved in the ability to go out and do some exercising. It improved her to the point she is able to do a lot of things by herself.”

Kay isn’t the only client with Parkinson’s seeing improvement, Schroder said.

“We’ve had doctors ask what we’re doing with their Parkinson’s patients because mentally they’re sharper than ever. Physically, they’re doing stuff they haven’t done in years,” Schroder said. “So ideally you’re stopping the decline, but we’re actually having them improve dramatically.”

“They love helping people, and they’re all in,” Schroder said. “They’re here because they love doing what they do. We try to make it the best experience for employees and clients.”

Schroder said an individual assessment is done with each client to find a baseline.

“We look at all the needs, whether it’s getting from Point A to Point B, getting out of a chair, all kinds of things they have to do, anyway,” Schroder said. “We want to make sure we do justice to them. It is personal training.

We look at their goals and needs and try to do the best we can for them.”

Schroder said some clients have lost more than 100 pounds.

“We’ve done some remarkable things with people over a long period of time,” he said.

“In our business, to be around more than 20 years is pretty rare.”

Trump misses an opportunity At the recent Golden Globes Awards, cinematic icon Meryl Streep unleashed a torrent of invective goop on President-elect Donald Trump. She had just won the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement and took the occasion to lash out at Trump, renouncing his campaign rhetoric and criticizing him for mocking a disabled reporter during the campaign. Note: No mention of the abduction, beating and semi-scalping of the mentally disabled Chicagoan by thugs. Sigh.

Her dime, her dance floor, we suppose. The really troubling element from that saga was Trump taking to Twitter to fire back with name-calling. Opportunity missed. He should have ignored it. Under the First Amendment she is entitled to her opinion (not that we agree with it or the “safe space” venue in which she chose to exercise it), and, second, silence would have been golden.

Aren’t there more important issues at hand, soon-to-be Mr. President, than yet another Hollywood liberal going off against you?

Let. It. Go. Stop Twitter bombing at every opportunity. We do, though, kind of like your notion to break news via your Twitter account instead of in the liberal, mainstream media; they’ll make it up, anyway. If, truly, it’s a new dawn in America, Trump needs to prove it by being presidential in every single way; well, not in the Clinton way, but we digress. We have no clue what he hoped to accomplish with his 140-character (plus) dance. Every task at hand is far more important than firing back at an entertainment lefty running off at the mouth.

What we eat Commentary by Terry Anker As kids growing up in late mid-century America, we were taught that “we are what we eat.” Sitting in the back of our thirdgrade classrooms, we giggled that we might become giant walking heads of broccoli or colossal personifications of pork chops. With so many of our supposed new ideas, the refrain did not originate with us but enjoyed a renaissance with the macrobiotic diet craze of the 1960s, as we were reminded that the machines that are our bodies would function better if they were fueled by higher quality consumables. Sure.

Many sources cite the early Christian church for first recording references to the notion that, even as we are called to the Holy Eucharist, we are being reminded of the spiritual connection between nourishment and life. By the early 1800s French politician and early gastronome Jean Anthelme BrillatSavarin deployed his version of the notion in the essay “Concerning Spiritualism and

Materialism.” No doubt, truffles, foie gras and Champagne had come to be religious experiences for some, but the point remained: healthy body, healthy mind.

By the early part of the 20th century, pioneering nutritionist and radio talk show host Victor Hugo Lindlahr admonished us to be mindful of what we consume, lest we become overweight and lack essential vigor. His 1940 book “You Are What You Eat” reflected a cultural shift focusing solely on the secular benefits of a healthy diet. Too bad. Can we deny the connection between what we put into our bodies and how we feel? If not, can we deny the connection between what we put into our bodies and how we think? Yet even as we marvel in our collective corpulence, do we starve our eternal spirits?

Get your mooches up, people! Football is winding down, but competitive dance is just getting started. Woot, humor woot! Yes, it’s true. I’ve reached the point in every dance mom’s life when she actually looks forward to the dressing-room drama, the bedazzled bootie shorts and the cringeworthy cacophony of hundreds of tweenagers yelling, “Ya-ah, Kayla!”

While trapped in a parking garage this morning (literally), I pondered my unbelievable metamorphosis. I’m not particularly girly, nor did I grow up in a world of jazz hands and faux Kardashian lashes. I’d always dreamed of watching my kids from the basketball stands or natatorium seats, or even the freezing soccer sidelines.

Never, at least until four years ago, had I imagined I’d happily be packing Dream Duffels full of sequenced costumes, makeup remover, fishnet tights and bun makers, and heading off to local hotels for 36-48 hours of dance competition (nor that I’d be stuck underground at 7:15 a.m.!).

In truth, my first year of wading through contemporary marshland with my youngest daughter was almost my last. The time, the money, the stupid judges … and all for watching my precious little angel on stage for maybe seven minutes, total. I could barely handle it. But she clearly has a passion for this, and I could easily see that behind the occasional tears and forgotten bling earrings, she was learning how to persevere under pressure (much like me as I analyzed my escape options).

I’ve also learned to squash my sometimes critical but always competitive nature and focus instead on how much fun she is having and the wonderful friendships she is making. And with the right attitude, Netflix and a pair of high-quality ear plugs, the weekends can be rather pleasurable (even when I seriously cannot get out of this stupid garage!).

So get ready for some unbelievable tales of tacky parenting and outrageous toddlers, my friends, for rarely does a dance season disappoint. I promise to deliver the juice, freshly squeezed, as I dive headfirst into the crazy (right after I solve this absurd parking predicament, that is). Peace out.

Art of humor Commentary by Dick Wolfsie From my first day of college in September of 1965 at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., I wanted to meet Art humor Buchwald. His office, on Pennsylvania Avenue, was just down the street from my dorm.

In 1967, I persuaded the editor of the student newspaper, “The Hatchet,” to give me my own weekly humor column. The feature, “Wolf’s Whistle,” ran in almost 100 college newspapers – possibly the first student syndicated humor column in the country.

Headstrong and naive, I figured I could just look up Mr. Buchwald’s home number in the phone book. There it was. When he answered the phone, I nervously filled him in on my own “rich” history of writing humor columns. When I told him I attended classes just a few blocks from his office, he invited me to come over for a short visit.

Two days later, I called Mr. Buchwald’s secretary. “Yes,” she said, “Mr. Buchwald said you’d be calling.” I stammered, “He did?”

I entered his office with a stack of “Hatchets” under my arm. He stole a glance at me and snapped, “Let me see one of those newspapers, kid.” I’d love to report to you that he

burst out laughing. Instead, he just stared at the page, steely eyed. Not even a smile. Only a subtle nod of the head that made me think he saw a glimmer of potential.

He grabbed a pen off his desk and scribbled a few words over my byline. Then he answered a phone call, apologized and walked out the door.

Dejected, I shuffled back to my apartment and opened the newspaper to the page that Mr. Buchwald had read. I stared in delight at these words scrawled on the paper: “Wolfsie, stay out of my racket.” – Art Buchwald I was only 20, but it was the coolest thing that had ever happened to me.

I cut out the message and framed it, along with the photo I had snapped of Mr. Buchwald reading my column. It has been on my desk ever since.

You know, that may still be the coolest thing that has ever happened to me.

Team Ninja carries its weight for Riley

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Several years ago, Bill Vernon was trying to raise money for Bop to the Top, a stair climb event benefiting giving back Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, when he had an idea.

“If I’m going to ask for money, then I’m going to have to do something extra,” Vernon said. “Then I think I’ve earned it.”

The Carmel resident promised donors he would carry the equivalent of whatever he collected in quarters as he climbed 36 floors of the OneAmerica Center.

“I was not anticipating the response,” he said.

With $50 of quarters weighing roughly five pounds, he began Bop to the Top with 150 pounds of change, splitting the weight with a friend.

“That was the longest, hardest stair climb,” he said. “But we raised a ton of money.”

Vernon raised the money for a team created by friend Mark Simmonds in memory of his son, who had been a Riley patient.

Over the next two years Vernon ran with his own group, Team Ninja, and hopes that they will raise $14,000 when they climb 500

He and other team members carry the equivalent weight in items like bricks, cinderblocks and sandbags. Last year, 25 people from his group participated in the climb, with everyone carrying various weights.

The name Team Ninja was created by Ver-

non’s wife when he was trying to think of a name for a group of runners to participate in a single running event. The group wanted to participate in more events together, and the name stuck.

Since its creation five years ago, the group has expanded to nine cities throughout the U.S. to connect people to active events and workouts.

More retail planned on U.S. 421

Moe’s Southwest development Grill and Sherwin-Williams will be two of the tenants in a new building at the corner of U.S. 421 and Bennett Parkway. The retail building will be on the property in front of the apartment complex The Domain at Bennett Farms.

Although The Domain lies in Zionsville, the new retail building, The Shoppes at Bennett Farm, will be entirely in Carmel.

The $3 million building is being developed

by Carmel-based JDF Development LLC, coowned and managed by Tim Jordan and Joe Farr.

After some changes to the plan following a Special Studies meeting, it will come before the Carmel Plan Commission again Jan. 17. The first proposal was presented to the plan com-

mission on Dec. 20.

The proposed one-story, 9,500-square-foot building has 2,800 square feet that is not rented, according to Farr. That space could be rented to one or two tenants.

The developers are looking for “somebody who’s willing to pay the rent, has credit and adds value to our center,” Jordan said.

Moe’s Southwest Grill will occupy 2,700 square feet. There are currently five Moe’s locations throughout the Indianapolis area.

Sherwin-Williams, which will occupy 4,000 square feet, has locations in the Carmel and Zionsville area.

“We are finding great demand in Carmel and Zionsville and felt we needed additional retail outlets to properly serve this growing market,” said Jeff Light, director of real estate for Sherwin-Williams.

Construction for The Shoppes at Bennett Farm is planned for the spring by Plainfield company L.D. Huff.

Central Indiana’s residential real estate sales stay steady, according to statistics compiled

by F.C. Tucker Company. In real estate November, despite having 1,899 fewer homes on the market from which to choose, pended home sales increased 7.6 percent compared to November 2015. The average sales price increased 3 percent year-to-date to $188,072.

Boone County’s pended sales increased drastically at 43.4 percent in November 2016 compared to November 2015. This mark is the highest among the 15-county region. Prices have increased by 8.1 percent over last year to an average of $291,395. The number of available homes for sale, however, continues to decline in the region; inventory in Boone County slid 12.8 percent in November, a drop of 49 homes available compared to this time last year.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sale price increased 8.2 percent to $403,487 – the highest average for the 15-county region.

• Inventory moved at a faster pace in Zionsville in November 2016. Overall, homes

sold in 64 days – 13 fewer days than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had fewer homes available to them. Last month, 162 homes were available for sale – 13 fewer homes compared to November 2015.

• Pended home sales increased in Zionsville. In November 2016, 35 homes sold – an increase of 10 homes compared to November 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, two were priced $1,000,000 to $1,999,999; six were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 13 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; eight were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and six were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

Inventory will continue to be tight, and buyers will need to continue to be decisive. In this fast-paced market, multiple offers should be expected.

Chamber’s Town Crier Award turns 50

The annual chamber of commerce banquet this year will honor the 50th anniversary of its Town Crier Award. The award event recognizes an individual who has made “outstanding contributions to the Town of Zionsville,” according to the chamber.

“It really is a wonderful tradition that the town and the chamber have kept alive for many years,” said Lesley Hunt, a chamber board member.

Hunt has been part of a 2017 project to honor each of the Town Criers over the past 50 years. One award recipient for each decade will be recognized to represent all of the winners in that decade.

“It will be a nice little tribute to everybody who has been a town crier for the last 50 years,” Hunt said.

The banquet celebrates businesses in the Zionsville community that “contribute to the betterment and economic growth of Zionsville,” according to a statement from the chamber of commerce.

IRT takes audience to ‘The Cay’

By Zach Dunkin • news@currentinwestfield.com How does a theatrical team put a wide, fantomless sea on a 20-foot by 30-foot platform? How does it bring a hurricane into a small theater? These were just a few theater challenges of setting the stage – a single, stationary island – for the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s “The Cay,” on the Upperstage from Jan. 28 through Feb. 26. “‘The Cay’ does present many unique and exciting design challenges,” Scenic Designer Eric Barker said. “With the story being told from the perspective of a child, one of my main objectives was to allow the audience to take their own personal journey of discovery within the scenic elements, much like a child’s imagination.”

In “The Cay,” a young white boy and an older African-American man find themselves stranded on a Caribbean island. In Gayle Cornelison’s adaptation of Theodore Taylor’s awardwinning novel, the play follows a friendship that blossoms despite racial division as Phillip, played by 14-year-old Dalyn Stewart, and Timothy, played by IRT favorite David Alan Ander-

son, learn that – despite age, upbringing or race – neither will survive without each other.

Taking place on a set that brings to life a variety of circumstances and locations, the characters survive being stranded at sea and tossed amidst a hurricane.

“Just as Philip expands his world view and learns to see Timothy in new ways, we ask the audience to expand its vision and let their imagination bloom,” said director and IRT dramaturg, Richard J. Roberts. “My favorite theater is when you have to use your imagination, and this production encourages just that.”

To help the audience “imagine,” sound effects have been created, using musical instruments, and the props, including two giant palm trees, have been fashioned from items one might find washed ashore after a shipwreck.

“This production asks the audience to look beyond the surface reality of stage objects and imagine a world of natural wonders, just as the characters must look beyond their personal differences and see the possibilities of friendship,” Roberts said.

Cook time: 55 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: Nonstick spray, 2 teaspoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon minced onion, 1 clove garlic, minced, 1 cup quinoa, rinsed and drained, 2 1/2 cups water, 2 large eggs, 1 cup nonfat milk, 1 cup Borden Cheese Sharp Cheddar Shreds, divided, chopped tomato (optional), green onion (optional) Directions: Heat oven to 350 F and spray 8-by-8-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.

In medium skillet, heat oil over medium heat until hot. Add onion and garlic, and saute 1 minute, or until onion is tender.

Add quinoa and cook, stirring, until golden brown and toasted, 2-3 minutes. Add water, bring to boil, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, covered, until water has been absorbed, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

In large bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Stir quinoa into egg mixture and whisk in 1/2 cup cheese. Spread in prepared baking dish and sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Bake 30 minutes.

Garnish with chopped tomato and green onion, if desired.

Serve immediately.

The goal for this backyard was a covered space free of direct sunlight, and other diverse spaces to enjoy the various aspects of the owners’ property.

1. The roofline of the existing pool house was extended to create a seamless transition to the covered outdoor living addition. This expansion that extends to the edge of the pool houses a wood-burning corner fireplace, improvements to the outdoor kitchen and an impressive vaulted ceiling with stained wood trim and accent lighting.

2. An additional feature to block sunlight and wind is an integrated, retractable screen between two of the pillars.

3. The entire concrete pool deck was re-designed and replaced with stamped concrete. This allowed for the original sunken fire pit to be raised up to ground level for easier access.

4. A stained cedar pergola with stone pillars and accent lighting was designed at the opposite end of the pool, overlooking the green space and the crystal clear pool simultaneously. This unique space can be enjoyed in moveable chairs, or even suspended in a hammock.

Before Background Info: This home in Carmel’s Springmill Streams neighborhood needed updated outdoor living features around the pool. After building a free-standing garage in 2006, the owners realized they needed a structure to provide more shade and an improved outdoor kitchen/ entertaining/TV viewing area.

Before problems: The previous outdoor kitchen was outdated, and the patio was uncovered and received an excessive amount of sunlight at peak times, making it difficult for the family to enjoy their outdoor living spaces. There also was no outdoor TV and limited covered space to sit and relax. The pool deck also needed some maintenance upgrades.

Pilgrims traveling the narrow road to McLeod Ganj, India, the Dalai Lama’s home in exile, sometimes stop to visit travel a church. The peaceful church still exhibits the effects of a long-ago natural disaster.

The town of McLeod Ganj lies almost 7,000 feet above sea level in the Dhauladhar Mountains of northern India, a few miles north of Dharamsala. In the 19th century, McLeod Ganj became a hill station, where British troops in the area could escape the summer heat.

In 1852, an Anglican church was built for the troops amid the cedar trees along the road from Dharamsala to McLeod Ganj. The Gothic church, remembering John the Baptist, became known as the Church of St. John in the Wilderness. The church and its trees were a favorite spot for James Bruce, the eighth Earl of Elgin, who became governor-general and viceroy of India in 1861. When Bruce died in Dharamsala in 1863 at age 52, he was buried, as he had requested, on the church grounds.

His widow erected a stone monument in his memory behind the church and donated magnificent stained glass windows from Belgium, with images of Jesus and John the
