Mayor, town pass bias-crime resolutions

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak signed an executive order Jan. 7 to provide additional education and outreach in LEGISLATION Zionsville, ensuring those who commit bias crimes are properly identified.

The Zionsville Town Council unanimously passed a resolution the same day encouraging the Indiana General Assembly to pass bias-crimes legislation at the state level during the 2019 legislative session.

A bias crime is a criminal offense that is committed against a person or group motivated by the offender’s bias against a religion, race, disability, sexual orientation or national origin. A bias crime is often referred to as a hate crime.

Indiana is one of only five states in the U.S. without hate crime laws. The Indiana General Assembly is currently in session reviewing proposed legislation. Five different house bills involving hate crimes have been proposed, authored by various representatives.

unanimously approved the resolution when it met with Haak in December 2018.

The resolution states that the Zionsville Town Council and Town of Zionsville support adding protections for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, nationality, gender identity or sexual orientation.

“The (Indianapolis) Chamber (of Commerce) is supporting bias crime legislation that looks very similar to what you see before you in the resolution,” Willey said. “Many of the large business organizations around the state are participating (in the conversation).”

Willey said Zionsville is leading the charge as a municipality with its own bias crime legislation.

“We do plan to share our resolution with members of the General Assembly as well as the governor,” Willey said.

In Haak’s executive order, his first of 2019, the mayor urges Indiana lawmakers to pass legislation providing all Hoosiers protection against bias crimes.

The order states two steps will be taken to ensure those who commit bias crimes are identified. The chief of police and the Zionsville Police Dept. will establish training to inform and educate all Zionsville officers on ways to identify bias crimes and also will collect data associated with crimes motivated by bias.

“It’s important that we take a stand against hate and to uphold our reputation that Zionsville is a welcoming community for all residents, visitors and businesses,” Haak said.

“The executive order and resolution send a strong message that something needs to get done in the next legislative session.”

Sheriff’s office provides anti-burglary advice

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Just before Christmas in late December 2018, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office saw an increase in home SAFETY burglaries.

According to BCSO Capt. Mike Beard, an increase in crime can occur around the holidays for several reasons. Residents often travel and leave their home vacant.

People may have new expensive items in the homes around the holidays, including TVs, computers and other electronics. Additionally, the perpetrators may be seeking money to provide for their own families.

Just because the holidays have ended, the BCSO does not want area residents to let their guard down. This year, some criminals revisited areas where break-ins already occurred, which used to be uncommon.

“The rules have changed in this 24/7 society,” Beard said. “Remain aware of what’s going on and keep doors locked.”

The BCSO asks that if residents see something suspicious, call the dispatch center at 765-482-1412, ext. 8. Those with information about suspicious activity or crimes that already have occurred can email tips to tips@co.boone.in.us with information, pictures or video.

Town council re-elects president, swears in three police officers

What happened: During the Jan. 7 Zionsville Town Council meeting, the council re-elected Josh Garrett as its president for 2019. Bryan Traylor also was re-elected as vice president for 2019.

What it means: Garrett was elected in 2015 to represent District 5, became council vice president in 2017 and became president later that year. Garrett co-founded the Zionsvillebased tech company Mobi, which recently merged with New Jersey-based Tangoe. Garrett became president of Tangoe’s new division devoted to managed mobility services.

Traylor was elected to serve as town councilor for District 1 in 2016. He has been a resident of Zionsville since 2003 and is senior vice president of residential lending for Centier Bank. Traylor has served as president of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, the Zionsville Board of Zoning Appeals and the Loan Committee for the Zionsville Micro Loan Fund.

What happened: Mayor Tim Haak and Zionsville Chief of Police Robert Knox swore in three new officers, Christopher Wheeler, Bryn Cavett and Amanda Heitz.

Just after 2 a.m. Jan. 10, emergency crews were called to the scene of a serious crash on Michigan Road involving a Toyota car and an Indiana Dept. of TRAFFIC ACCIDENT Transportation plow truck.

The crash occurred on northbound Michigan Road just south of 96th Street near the border of Zionsville and Indianapolis. Medics from Pike Township Fire Dept. and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept. arrived first on scene and found the driver of the car, 19-year-old Christian Brocious of Zionsville, unresponsive. Brocious was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the INDOT truck, Uriel Valez of Greenfield, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to a report by the Indiana State Police, the 2017 Toyota was traveling northbound on Michigan Road when it veered into the turn lane and hit the right rear of the INDOT plow truck, which was stopped in the left turn lane on northbound Michigan Road, preparing to turn onto westbound I-465. Investigators believe the northbound traffic had a green light and the truck was stopped at the turn light, which was red.

The crash is still under investigation and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

What it means: The three new officers were approved and hired before being sworn in. They took an oath of office for Zionsville police officers, administered

by Haak. Family members then ceremoniously pinned on their badges.

Fly-fishing festival returns to Boone County Jan. 19-20

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Fly fishermen from across the U.S. will ply their craft in Indiana Jan. 19-20 for the second VETERAN REHABILITATION Heartland Fly Fishing Festival, sponsored by the Indianapolis chapter of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing.

Retired Navy Capt. Ed Nicholson founded PHWFF in 2005 after his stay at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The nationwide nonprofit’s mission is to emotionally and physically rehabilitate disabled active duty military personnel and veterans through fly-fishing education and outings, a form of therapeutic outdoor recreation.

“The practice and the art of fly fishing we find, (and) I think most of our veteran participants have found, is emotionally healing,” said Joseph Smith, PHWFF program lead. “It gets them out of the house, off the couch and on the water.”

Smith, who served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1972, plans 12 fly-fishing outings each year for the Indianapolis chapter. Six outings are at local streams. The other six

events are at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Participants learn to fish, tie flies and build rods.

“I think it’s very valuable,” Smith said.

“We’ve seen almost daily episodes of suicides among the veteran population. The figures are staggering. I know we can’t solve all that with what we do, but we certainly try to provide a bit of an answer.”

Smith and other volunteers organized the inaugural festival in 2018 to raise awareness and funds for the program, which

includes educational seminars, fly-tying presentations, apparel demonstrations and equipment trials.

Smith said last year’s event drew more than 600 attendees and raised enough funds to send PHWFF participants on outings to Florida, Montana and Nova Scotia.

The festival has grown, spreading into two buildings at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds. Some of last year’s veteran attendess will return as presenters.

Pet Wellness donates $2K to Humane Society

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Pet Wellness Clinics raised more than $2,000 for the Humane Society for Boone County through its FUNDRAISER “Peace. Love. Pets.” giving campaign, encouraging clients to enroll their pets into its Pet Prime Membership program.

The program lays the foundation for a pet’s health and provides cost savings for their owner by including all the vaccinations a pet needs, including annual heartworm, flea and tick prevention, unlimited exams, technician visits and 10 percent off prescription medications and nutraceutical items.

For every new member, Pet Wellness Clinics, a group of seven clinics across central Indiana, donated $10 to the shelter. The promotion spanned Nov. 15 to Dec. 31, 2018.

Between all seven locations, Pet Wellness gained 192 new memberships.

On Jan. 3, Zionsville Pet Wellness Clinic presented the Humane Society for Boone County with a check for $2,034.92 at the HSBC shelter, 5366 S. Indianapolis Rd.,

Whitestown.

“It was nice to see (HSBC’s) new facility and the upgrades they are doing,” said Betsy Smart, Pet Wellness Clinics practice manager.

Proceeds will go toward animal food, toys, cleaning supplies, beds and more for the HSBC. “We are very grateful for Pet Wellness Clinic’s generosity and efforts to help support our all-volunteer organization,” said Susan Austin, president and director of Animal Welfare and Fundraising for HSBC. “The proceeds will help us continue providing an even better service to the abandoned, neglected and homeless animals of Boone County.”

The veterinary provider then took the pet care campaign to the next level by offering continued medical services to current and incoming animals of the shelter. Pet Wellness will provide spay and neuter services and some wellness care, including vaccinations and heartworm testing.

“We’re excited to be able to work with Boone County because they are completely donation-funded,” Smart said. “We want to help them in any way we can.”

Eagle sculpture takes flight at TPCA

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Traders Point Christian Academy students in kindergarten through eighth grade returned to school Jan. 8 and were STEM greeted by a large sculpture of a flying golden eagle.

The eagle fits with an ongoing theme at the school. Kindergarten through sixth-grade students recently built an eagle’s nest as part of a collaborative STEM project. They learned about circumference, diameter and engineering techniques that eagles use to build their

nests as a hands-on approach designed to engage students in the learning process.

The new TPCA golden eagle has a 9-foot body and 19-foot wingspan and was sculpted from archival foam by local artist and maker Eric Wallentine. Wallentine works in many different mediums and has worked on art projects for the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

He chose to replicate a juvenile golden eagle, representing the young students at TPCA. The young golden eagle also symbolizes strength, intended to remind students, faculty and staff of strength through God.

Beam straightening scheduled for CONSTRUCTION I-465 bridge at I-865 — Indiana Dept. of Transportation officials met with contractor representatives Jan. 3 at Greenfield District offices to review plans for repairing a damaged bridge beam on I-465 over I-865 on the northwest side of Indianapolis in Boone County. Rieth Riley is the state’s prime contractor for this $354,512.82 bridge repair contract that calls for heat-straightening the facia steel beam under the left lane of southbound I-465 where it overpasses I-865. This will require closing I-465’s northbound ramp to westbound I-865 and detouring westbound motorists via eastbound I-465 to U.S. Highway 421/ Michigan Road where they will reverse direction to westbound I-465.

Zion Nature Center receives $5k

By Kelsey Musick news@currentzionsville.com Boone County Solid Waste Management District awarded a $5,000 community grant to Zion Nature Center last FUNDING month to cover the cost of five picnic tables.

Each year, the Boone County Solid Waste Management District offers a community grant to fund projects that fall within the scope of its mission -- to conserve natural resources, decrease dependence on disposal, demonstrate the importance of sustainability and promote health in Boone County.

The nature center has been continually repairing its wooden picnic tables for the past several years due to parts having rotted or split, according to Zionsville Parks and Recreation Park Naturalist and Zion Nature Center Manager Mindy Murdock, “Last year, we began researching how we could replace the picnic tables, as there are now more replacement boards than the original (wood),” Murdock said.

Because wooden tables require maintenance and do not last long outdoors, Zion Nature Center staff priced out the cost for replacement tables made from recycled lumber.

The BCSWMD grant allows the nature center to replace all picnic tables at once, rather than one or two tables per year during the next few years.

“We decided to build our own instead of buying pre-made ones,” Murdock said. “We should be able to get 15 or more years out of the new tables.”

The picnic tables at the nature center, the only environmental education facility in Boone County, are utilized as an outdoor classroom. Between campfires, summer camps, Zionsville Nature Play Days and other programs, they are heavily used each year.

Trips to the woodshed Commentary by Ward Degler It was chilly in the house the other morning, so I moved the thermostat up a few degrees. Then, I poured a cup of coffee and sat down to catch up on PLAIN TALK some reading.

At least, that was the plan. But as I sat there with my coffee stirred and my book open to where I left off, I got to thinking about heating a home.

Turning up the thermostat isn’t the way we heated our home when I was a kid. Back in those days, we lived in the Wisconsin Northwoods and heated our home with wood. Before we could do that, we had to split the wood. And before that, we either had to traipse into the woods and cut it down, or buy it from a supplier who would dump it in a huge pile in our backyard.

My dad did both. Most of the time he would cut the wood himself with a helper from the CCC camp where he was superintendent. They used a two-man crosscut saw, a wicked-looking device about 7 feet long with handles at both ends. They would start out before sun up with a borrowed truck and lunches packed by my mom.

Sometime after dark that evening, they would return with a truckload of wood. Before coming in for supper, they would dump the wood in the backyard.

The next step was splitting the wood into

pieces that would fit into our wood-burning stove. Since Dad worked long hours during the week, he did most of his splitting on weekends. Weekdays after school it was my job.

Dad never told me how much I had to split every day, but I absolutely had to fill the woodbox. The woodbox was a clever creation that was half outside the house and half inside. You filled it from the outside.

On Saturdays, Dad would split and I would carry the pieces to the woodshed and stack them neatly in rows as high as I could reach. Dad always tried to get the woodshed filled before temperatures plummeted into negative territory.

Each winter we burned about 20 cords of wood. Considering that a cord is 4-feet high, 4-feet wide and 8-feet long, that was a lot of trips to the woodbox.

By the time I reached high school, we had stopped burning wood and graduated to a coal furnace that had to be stoked twice a day. Eventually, we got a gas furnace, and all you had to do was turn up the thermostat.

Pickleball popularity grows locally, nationally

“Everything surrounding tennis was my life,” said Witsken, a COVER STORY two-time Indiana state singles tennis champion who also was world-ranked on the ATP Tour in singles and doubles.

Witsken began his post-tennis career working with his brother, 1986 U.S. Open singles champion Todd Witsken, at the Indianapolis Tennis Center, serving as tennis director and coach of the IUPUI men’s tennis team. Todd died in 1998 at age 34 after a nearly two-year battle with brain cancer.

Witsken, a Zionsville resident, founded Team Witsken Tennis 20 years ago after losing his brother.

“I started my company to honor him in every way,” he said.

Team Witsken has coordinated tennis programming in the greater Indianapolis area for 16 years. Witsken coaches indoors at The Retreat and offers summer programs in Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, Mount Vernon, Westfield and other surrounding communities. He is the head coach of the Zionsville girls middle school tennis teams.

FOR THE LOVE OF PICKLEBALL

When Witsken was introduced to pickleball five years ago, he immediately loved it and soon began coaching. He now plays nearly 20 professional tournaments each year, earning prize money and sponsorships, and offers pickleball programs for all ages and levels through Team Witsken. This year, he will play a pickleball tournament with former U.S. Open and Wimbledon tennis doubles champion Ellis Ferreira.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong and can be played indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly lowered tennis net. The sport is typically played with composite paddles with thin laminate faces, though some paddles are made from different materials. It uses a plastic ball with circular holes. players, the game largely is recognized as a doubles sport.

“Pickleball is a very easy game to pick up at a decent level, but difficult to play at a high level,” Witsken said. “In 30 minutes, you can understand the concept.”

Witsken said the sport is quickly gaining popularity. He intends to lead the pickleball charge in Zionsville and surrounding communities. “(Team Witsken is) the (pickleball) teaching entity of the Sagamore Club in Noblesville and just received authorization to teach at Cyntheanne Park in Fishers,” he said. “We have three other locations that we’re in negotiations with.”

The sport is the fastest-growing in the U.S., with more than 2.8 million players and a 12 percent increase in 2018, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

It is played in elementary schools, community rec centers, country clubs and other venues.

AN APPROACHABLE GAME

Matthew Slatkin, an instructional designer who relocated to Zionsville last year, has been playing pickleball with his 12-year-old son, Ethan, for two years.

“We’ve been fortunate in that we have close-by facilities and that Rick (Witsken) has been really supportive of my son and I as we try to become better players,” Slatkin said. “My son gets private lessons once a week. His play has improved and it’s something we love to do.”

Slatkin said there’s a reason why pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S.: accessibility.

“The cost of the racket is less than half of what a tennis racket costs,” Slatkin said. “It (has) a low barrier to entry, and people of all ages can play it.”

Slatkin, who is experienced in pingpong and tennis, said pickleball is more fair because it uses an underhand serve and also includes a 7-foot, non-volley zone called “the kitchen” which prevents people from using height to an advantage. The sport allows women, men and children to play together by minimizing physical dominance.

Witsken said the court also is easy to set up.

“You can use a tennis court or basketball gym floor and tape it off as a pickleball court,” Witsken said. “You can even play it in a driveway or cul-de-sac.”

Ethan Slatkin said he enjoys the sport because he is shorter than most of his opponents but can still play well.

“What I like to see is that it brings so many families together doing something athletically,” Witsken said. “Getting kids away from the electronic and social media craze and into activities and athletics, that really excites me.”

DRAWING NEW LINES

Sue Gregerson, business director for the Zionsville Community Schools Special Projects Division, is an avid pickleball player and wants to see it grow in Zionsville.

According to Gregerson, ZCS aims to add pickleball lines to a few tennis courts at Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School.

“They would still be tennis courts, but they would have pickleball court lines on

top of them,” Gregerson said. “The hope is to have some tennis courts adapted to pickleball by spring 2019 so we’d have them in place for summer.”

She said the goal is to add pickleball to the Eagle Recreation Enrichment offerings, which can be taken for a fee throughout the year in addition to regular school programming.

“I love all the people I’ve met through playing pickleball,” Gregerson said. “It’s good for socialization and exercise.”

LETTER Statue of Liberty just fine where she is

Commentary by Terry Anker The California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento is widely regarded by visitors to that fine city as worth the trip. Its expansive collection and exhibits inspire and delight for a modest price of admission. One interesting interactive presentation allows for the guest to sit in a mock-up of the cockpit of a famed Japanese bullet train. Acting as engineer, one is challenged to load passengers, leave the station, race across urban and rural landscapes and arrive safely to the end-of-the line within a few feet of the precise drop point.

While waiting for the attraction, there are many displays regaling the history and aspirations of these innovations. It refreshed memories of a conversation I had as a college student with the then-president of Indiana University who was imagining such a connection from IU’s Bloomington campus to IUPUI in Indianapolis to Purdue’s West Lafayette home. “Imagine a 45-minute ride from one end to the other,” he mused.

What impact might it have had on our state, its institutions and all of us? Would we be more highly regarded or simply bankrupt?

We know that points of connection matter. Old west towns came to prominence and then faded based solely on the caprice of an active stagecoach stop or train station. All ancient capitals had navigable waterways. Like the long-past steam trains, schedules must align and access must be convenient.

Daylight savings time, direct flights and ample parking all contribute, in part, to the recipe.

Likewise, high-speed internet is a connective lifeblood. Understanding the power of assembly and the risk of isolation, can we thrive, or even survive, in a modern landlock?

Ultimate dad/daughter road trip Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m alive! And so is my dad. We survived a 14-hour road trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., during New Year’s with an overHUMOR night in exotic Valdosta, Ga. Though it was an impromptu decision to join him, I am so glad I did. Memories were made, people!

We ate Egg McMuffins in an uncharacteristically dirty McDonald’s somewhere in rural Tennessee, pondering our chances of winning Mega Millions. We enjoyed the last dinner of 2018 at Red Lobster, surrounded by blue hairs and Cheddar Bay biscuits. And we witnessed a small fender bender in a rest area near Ocala, where the victim went from yelling about her car to hugging the old man that had hit her and insisting he get out of the sun. There is goodness in the world!

Plus, I learned a few things about my father. For instance, he does not tolerate inferior paper products. Kleenex or Puffs only, please. Also, that his first concert was

Elvis. Elvis! And finally, that he spent a gap year in London before gap years were cool.

In the ‘60s. So, my father was basically Austin Powers.

True, Dad still gets anxious when I drive, as if I’m 16 again, wedging the Ford LTD wagon between our house and the neighbor’s fence. And he snores, often quite robustly.

But on balance, my father is the perfect traveling companion. He’s comfortable with silence, enjoys the music of the Margaritaville channel and pays for everything.

Bottom line, friends? If you ever have the chance to spend quality time with a parent, do it! They’re not going to be around forever, but your memories will.

Editor, Regarding Mr. Campbell’s cartoon, the Statue of Liberty asking to go back to France (published Nov. 27), evidently Mr. Campbell is not aware of the rebellion in France.

Thousands of French citizens called “Yellow Vests” have been rioting for weeks, initially over a carbon tax on diesel fuel.

However, complaints obviously go much further than the now-rolled-back carbon tax on an already heavily taxed population. Our Statue of Liberty would find these working-class people also are protesting the mindless refugee plan, which allows tens of thousands into their country, placing a burden on their welfare state, as well as holding wages down through a source of cheap, unskilled labor.

Now, the Yellow Jacket rebellion is spreading to other European Union countries. So, the implication of the cartoon is the U.S., under President Trump, now has unfair and unwelcoming immigration laws.

The executive branch does not make the laws. The executive branch is expected to enforce the laws, and not just the laws their political party likes. The first obligation of government is to keep its citizens safe.

Most citizens expect that immigrants are properly vetted, hence the need for legal immigration. While our immigration laws are far from perfect, I believe the Statue of Liberty is just fine where it is, welcoming immigrants as she has most of our families.

Channeling Bach and rock Commentary by Dick Wolfsie We recently changed cable services. Our new system allows me to talk to the remote, and magically the TV HUMOR plays my choice. This is a huge advantage for me over the last set-up where, instead of talking to the remote, I told Mary Ellen what show I wanted to view. But then she would put on what she wanted to watch, and I had to go down to the basement.

We have enjoyed watching old movies, but mostly we’ve watched music. It’s just like the old MTV, but there’s nothing to look at. It’s a blank screen. We get songs on several channels, each featuring a different genre, like R&B, hip-hop, reggae, soul, smooth jazz, rough jazz, heavy metal, light metal, hard rock and soft rock.

My wife hates having to explain everything we view on TV. “Sorry, I had to go the bathroom, Mary Ellen. Did I miss anything?”

“Yes, you missed the beginning of Bach’s ‘Cello Concerto in D minor.’ And, no, I’m not going to hum it for you. And explaining music is very difficult.”

“Then let’s switch to Easy Listening.”

The music stations display ads in one corner and interesting facts about the song or the artist playing in the opposite corner.

Symphonies were written by musicians when they were youngsters. Impressive, but in all fairness, what else was there to do in the 1700s? No Internet, no iPhone 4G. Not even the 3G. The 13th-century French musician Léonin gained fame at Notre Dame. But what did he play? French horn? Violin? Quarterback?

I did some research myself: Johann Sebastian Bach’s wife made him a sandwich to take to work every day and is credited with inventing the Bach’s lunch.

Beethoven was not deaf. He simply had heard enough already.

It wasn’t that Brahms didn’t like children — he just liked them better when they were sleeping.

Mary Ellen said I could watch the Colts game this week on our big TV. That was music to my ears.

Dementia Friends of Indiana and CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions will conduct an informational HEALTH EDUCATION event at 2 p.m.

Jan. 22 at Lebanon Public Library, 104 E. Washington St., Lebanon.

The Dementia Friends initiative, a global movement to destigmatize cognitive diseases, began in the U.K. and expanded to Indiana in 2015 as an extension of the Dementia Friendly America program. It aims to educate communities across the state about dementia and break down the stigma.

“These events are designed to better prepare and educate our communities about dementia, so people in the communities know how to better interact with, welcome and engage people with the disease,” said Dustin Ziegler, director of community programs at CICOA.

Dementia is a broad category of brain diseases that cause a long-term and often gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease.

Ziegler said the biggest dementia risk factor is age, and the largest population is becoming the oldest population. Because of the fact people are living longer than ever before, diseases affecting brain function are expected to rise.

“The prevalence is so high and the condition is rapidly rising,” Ziegler said. “Right now, the numbers show 5.5 million people with dementia, and that number is expected to triple over the next couple of decades.”

The informational events are free and community-based. CICOA is the state administrator for the grassroots, volunteer-led Dementia Friends program. Anson Senior Living played a support role in scheduling the event.

Zionsville Chamber of Commerce held January’s First Tuesday networking event Jan. 8 at Habitat for HumanNETWORKING ity Boone County’s new ReStore in Zionsville.

ReStore, 10650 Andrade Dr., Zionsville, is a retail shop benefitting HFHBC by selling building supplies and home goods and accepts item donations on location. HFHBC also picks up salvaged items and appliances from homes, such as cabinets, sinks, bathtubs, refrigerators and more. All proceeds from ReStore go toward building homes for Boone County residents.

First Tuesday is a monthly networking event organized by the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce. Each month a different Zionsville Chamber member has the opportunity to play host to the event at their place of business or another location. First Tuesday features networking, door prizes, drinks and appetizers and is sponsored by Old National Bank.

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Within minutes of meeting more than four years ago, Kathleen Ilo and Jonas Kazlauskas realized they had shared goals for their ballroom dancing careers.

DANCE The duo from Carmel captured the professional 10-dance title in the U.S. Championships in Orlando in September 2018, for the second consecutive year. The couple placed third in in the professional 10-dance in the World Championships in October 2018 in Minsk, Belarus.

The 10-dance competition includes five Latin dances and five standard dances.

“Our goal is to keep the streak in the U.S. and climb a few more spaces in the world,” Kazlauskas said. “That’s why we started dancing together and that’s why we’ll keep on dancing until we get to the finish line.”

Kazlauskas said the 10-dance can be more expensive for competition because of the need for expert instruction in certain dances.

“We like the music of the waltz, but we like the music of the samba and cha-cha-cha, also,” Kazlauskas said. “When you are working and teaching, you can do shows and teach in both styles. It pays back in the end.”

The two began dating six months after they started dancing together.

Ilo’s parents, Rauno and Kristiina Ilo, former Soviet Union 10-dance champions, own the Starlite Ballroom and Dance School in Indianapolis. Ilo and Kazlauskas are instructors at the school, teaching all levels and ages.

“We have a lot of people who come from Columbus (Ohio), Chicago or Michigan just because they’ve heard of our name and they want to come and have lessons,” Ilo said. “They will seek you out if you have done something worthwhile.”

The couple travels frequently for competitions and instruction.

In 2018, the couple traveled to London, Italy Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Belarus, France, China and Thailand.

Ilo was seeking a new partner because her partner at the time was living in North Carolina and she had to travel back and forth.

Her father found an advertisement Kazlauskas put up on dancesportinfo.net seeking a partner in the fall of 2014.

Ilo’s father said he seemed to be the right age, height and looks for her.

“It’s like a dating site for dance partners,” Ilo said of the advertisement.

The next day, she messaged Kazlauskas, and the following day, she flew to Boston for a tryout.

“We decided that day we were going to dance together,” Ilo said. “He had a certain amount of achievements, so that was appealing. He is from Lithuania and that’s close to Estonia, so it’s nice to have someone from a similar culture to you. When we met, we had the same goals.”

Ilo’s family moved to Washington, D.C., from Estonia when she was 5 years old and then moved to Carmel when she was in third grade. After graduating from Cathedral High School, Ilo graduated from Indiana University with a biology degree.

“I kind of always knew I would come back to dancing, but for a long time I thought I wanted to be a dentist. Then I decided I didn’t want to be a dentist,” she said. “Right after school, I started teaching and dancing more seriously.”

Kazlauskas moved from Lithuania to England when he was 14.

He moved to Boston nine years later. Shortly thereafter, he met Ilo. Ilo is 5-foot-5 while Kazlauskas is 6-foot.

“The ideal height would be 5-7 for Kazlauskas for ballroom, but for Latin it doesn’t matter because it’s just a hand connection,” Ilo said. “I wear a higher (heel) shoe and he has to bend a little more. He complains a lot about it, but that’s OK.” One advantage Starlite has is its full competition-sized floor.

Kazlauskas agreed it benefits rehearsals.

“We’re spoiled. The better the floor, the easier it is to dance sometimes,” he said.

Kazlauskas would love to see more younger boys give ballroom dancing a try. Ilo’s brother, Markus, a Carmel High School sophomore, started a ballroom dance club at school.

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 303 E Main St., Westfield What to get: Hot Grain Bowl Price: $12 Anna’s take: Field Brewing opened in October 2018. The modern restaurant and brewery’s take on a healthy, clean menu leaves taste buds and bodies happy.

I started with the grilled chicken wings ($8 for a half order, $16 for a full order). The bone-in wings are braised for 1 1/2 hours, then grillled to create a slightly charred exterior. The wings are braised in a spicy garlic sauce, then tossed with fresh herbs to create a vibrant finishing touch. The wings are gluten-free and served with a house-made Parmesan ranch.

For my main dish, I enjoyed the Hot Grain Bowl, which exudes comfort and earthiness with faro, barley, wild rice, lentils and chickpeas. The dish is vegetarian but has plenty of protein from the grains. Kuri squash is mixed with the grains as well as walnuts, kale, cabbage, pistachios and a Chermoula dressing – an African-style spice. It’s topped with a poached egg.

Suggested pairings: For the wings, order a pint of Our Lightest Beer, a German-style pilsner that cuts through the heat. For the Hot Grain Bowl, pair it with a pint of Centerfield pale ale, a collaboration between Field Brewing and Centerpoint Brewing in Indianapolis. All pints are $6.

Dan Lockhart and Dan Blackard have written more than 100 songs together.

However, the two have never MUSIC met in person and have no real plans to do so.

Lockhart, a Carmel resident, said both enjoy the arrangement and find it quite productive. Blackard, who lives in Reno, Nev., and Lockhart met on SoundCloud. They released their first album, “4114,” under the name Dan X2 in October. The album is pronounced four-one-fourteen.

“It represents our common first name of Dan,” Lockhart said. “D is the fourth letter of the alphabet, A is the first letter of the alphabet and N is the 14th letter.”

Lockhart said the musical partners have a process that fits their unique skills.

“We each do the parts that best fit our skills and interests. I do the initial song development,” Lockhart said. “(Blackard) writes the lyrics, perform the vocals and adds lead guitar. I then take the track and do all final production, mixing, mastering, adding in frills. I write all of the chords, timing, changes and develop the track.”

He then sends two tracks to Blackard.

Lockhart plays guitar, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, pedal steel, violin and viola, so he can make a lot of adjustments.

“On rare occasions I move pieces about,” Lockhart said. “I then master it and prepare it for final production.”

The music is blues and rock based and the album can be found on iTunes. Lockhart moved from Boston to Fishers in 1988. In 1996, he moved to St. Louis for two years and has lived in Carmel since 1998.

Blueprint for Improvement: Northern Indianapolis condo expansion Commentary by Larry Greene

AFTER SOLUTIONS We previously highlighted the larger kitchen remodel, but now we will highlight the remaining kitchen and master bathroom that also were included in the remodel.

1. The homeowners decided to keep two kitchens in the now joint condo. The second kitchen was updated with all new cabinetry, countertops and flooring.

2. One section of the cabinetry was removed, and floating shelves were incorporated for a more modern design.

3. Not only were the countertops upgraded to quartz, but the same material also was incorporated as the backsplash, carrying its beautiful veining through the kitchen.

4. The master bathroom materials were completely updated, and a steam unit was added to the homeowners’ new custom-tile shower for a spa-like experience.

Background info: This condo, in the Olde Mill neighborhood of Northern Indianapolis and built in the late ’80s, was a unique project. The homeowners owned two neighboring condos and wanted to create one space to have more room for family and friends to visit.

BEFORE PROBLEMS As highlighted in the previous Blueprint for Improvement, the two condos were small and divided. There were two kitchens that were dated and felt dark and confined. The bathrooms had never been updated and lacked functionality.

Besides, I’m beside myself Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Did you know that “I Am the Walrus” was the B-side to The Beatles’ 1967 single “Hello, Goodbye?” Usually, GRAMMAR GUY a B-side served as a virtual throwaway for a band — a discarded song that would never get radio airtime. The focus was always intended for the A-side to shine. When I learned this piece of Beatles trivia, I was beside myself. Does anyone besides me feel the same way?

Today, we’re taking a look at “beside” and “besides.” The two words are often used interchangeably, even though they have distinct intended usages. Let’s start with “beside.” Beside is almost always used as a preposition that means “next to” or “on the side of.” I sat beside my record player while trying to dissect the meaning of Lennon’s kooky lyrics.

Occasionally, “beside” means “in comparison with.” Here’s an example: As The Beatles’ songs gained more popularity, they earned their place in rock ‘n’ roll history beside greats like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. This usage of beside is more figurative, instead of being literally next to Elvis and Chuck Berry.

“Besides” can be used as either an adverb or a preposition. As an adverb, it means “in addition to,” “also” or “otherwise.” For example: My friend Byron believes Paul McCartney died in a car crash in early 1966; besides, he’ll buy into just about any conspiracy theory. As a preposition, besides means “in addition to” or “except.” “Besides the clues on the cover of ‘Abbey Road,’ there’s evidence in countless Beatles lyrics to prove the theory,” Byron argued.

The easy way to remember when to use beside or besides is that “besides” has one additional letter, and it also means “in addition to.” Use the longer word when you mean “in addition to.” Just like Paul McCartney (who is 100 percent alive) doesn’t want to be accused of being an imposter, don’t let people think you’re a grammar wannabe — know the difference between beside and besides.

Tales of the Alhambra Commentary by Don Knebel The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, is one of the world’s finest examples of Islamic design. For a time, its primary occupants were Granada’s homeless.

TRAVEL By the 13th century, Christian forces of the Reconquista were making real progress in recapturing Spanish cities from the Muslims. To make sure that Granada would not fall, in about 1230 A.D. Sultan Muhammad I, the founder of the Nasrid dynasty, began building a fortified palace atop a hill overlooking the city. Subsequent Nasrid sultans continued the project, adding lavishly adorned rooms, courtyards and gardens, along with barracks for up to 40,000 soldiers. Nearly every interior surface was covered with intricate carvings and plasterwork, some reflecting Arabic writings. The complex became known as “La Alhambra,” after an Arabic name meaning “red castle.”

Although Granada was the last Spanish city to remain in Muslim hands, La Alhambra’s fortifications and troops eventually proved inadequate. On Jan. 2, 1492, Sultan Boabdil surrendered to Ferdinand II and Isabella I, who made La Alhambra their

royal residence. From there they issued the Alhambra Decree, requiring all Jews to leave Spain within four months unless they converted to Christianity. In about 1527, Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor and emperor of Spain, ordered that parts of the Alhambra be replaced with a Renaissance-style palace so he could enjoy what remained.

The Alhambra was abandoned in the 18th century, falling into disrepair and becoming a refuge for beggars. From 1808 to 1812, the Alhambra was occupied by Napoleon’s troops, who blew up parts of it. Restoration of the Alhambra began in 1828, when it was

visited by Washington Irving, who brought its magnificence to western audiences with his 1832 publication of “Tales of the Alhambra.” The Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has become one of Spain’s most popular destinations, welcoming up to 6,000 visitors a day.
