Council holds off zWorks funds

With the growth in popularity for coworking space companies like Launch Fishers in Fishers and The Speak Easy in Broad Ripple, government Zionsville will soon welcome zWORKS, a company based on providing a similar concept. At the Jan. 5 Town Council meeting, members of the council were presented with the concept by co-founder Dan Moyers.

A consideration for an appropriation to use $10,000 of the Food and Beverage Fund as seed money for zWorks was discussed.

While councilors were enthusiastic about the company coming to Moyers town, there were still concerns about providing the funds before the company had been established and what the town would get from being a partner with the organization.

“I wanted to pry a little bit deeper into how you would recognize organizations (the town of Zionsville) like ours that come in as a partner and not as a member, although there is some membership discussion there, but I think its important for us to land on the distinction of an entity like a town to come in to support, seed and fund the initial startup of something like Suarez this, which I’m very supportive of,” said councilwoman and newly elected council vice president Susana Suarez. “I just want to understand how this will be structured.”

Moyers responded to Suarez and said: “The town would map to our highest level of partnership which would be our gold level, we have three levels, and that would come with it all of the benefits of that. So front and center brand, a logo exposure on our website. There are three memberships that can be used by individuals whether that be council members or town staff that may need a place to touch down or land to work from as kind of an alternative. We’re also including the opportunity to do an event, so maybe there’s a town event of some kind that might like to use the space once a year, as an example.”

“I would like to see a little more meat and potatoes in it other than us just coming out with this,” said councilwoman Candice Ulmer. “If we could wait

and see how things are going down the road; I’m all for voting tonight for the $10,000 and appropriating that, but I think I’m a little hesitant to release that until I see it [up and running].”

Another concern was that the approval of the use of funds for seed money would possibly open up the door for other companies Ulmer to ask for similar funds from the town.

“My concern from us is that we might start a precedent giving seed money for other nonprofits or other companies or firms or groups that come to us with the same type of thing,” Ulmer said.

Ultimately the council agreed that the appropriation would be approved pending the signing of a lease, thus establishing a guaranteed location of the organization, which aims to locate “on or near Main Street.”

With the first snow of the year, Central Indiana residents and businesses owners are reminded that it’s their legal responsibility to remove snow from their sidewalks. In Indianapolis and many surrounding communities, city ordinances require homeowners and businesses to clear the sidewalks in front of and adjacent to their properties. In Indianapolis, the ordinance gives the occupant or owner of a building 10 to 14 hours after a snowfall to shovel the sidewalks or risk receiving a $50 fine. Town is gifted new rain barrel

One ecofriendly method Zionsville Town Hall currently employs is the use of rain barrels, which catch rainwater government that would otherwise be lost as runoff, and turns it into usable hose water. Previously town hall used a basic blue barrel, but thanks to a charitable donation from the HAWK Foundation and the Alpha Leos Club, town hall received a new rain barrel with a new look.

Two friends put their artistic skills to work in designing a rain barrel with a much more eye-catching design. Using what they call “line connects” the two teens collaborated to design a barrel for the town. Both teens presented the barrel to the town council during the Jan. 5 meeting.

“To be able to express myself through my art means everything,” Hawk Trimmer, the inspiration behind the HAWK Foundation, and one of the presenting teens, said. “I am honored to have been asked to place my expression on this piece that is being dedicated today. I am equally as honored that I was asked to create this piece with my dear friend. We had a few trial and errors with this piece but finally I was able to get my colorful creations put down on this rain barrel. Next comes a collaboration with my dear friend. We worked together creating what we call Line Connects. [My friend] and I begin with a line, a shape and the other person finishes it.

Once we were able to put a few line connects sketched down on paper they were then cut out and carefully, diligently stenciled all over the colorful creation I had painted on before. [My friend] then endured many of the stencils with her very own designs. Our favorite quotes where then added.”

The teens each chose a quote that impacted them. They were: “Be the change you want to see in the world,” from Mahatma Gandhi and, “What will your verse be?” from Robin Williams in the film “The Dead Poet Society.”

On Jan. 6, Leslie Frobig of Stonegate Elementary was honored by Current for being the schools December Teacher of the Month. Frobig and her students celebrated with a pizza party, courtesy of Amore Pizzeria, and Frobig received a cash voucher from BMO Harris Bank.

Frobig was nominated by her students Brady and Ava Peterson.

Here is the essay the Peterson pair wrote: Mrs. Frobig has been our teacher for both first and second grade. Our whole class loved her so much we all chose to move with her to second grade! Mrs. Frobig is great because she can make boring stuff really fun to learn. She likes to turn everything into a game!

Mrs. Frobig is a huge sports fan. She fills our gym time with all kinds of sports and wears her Reggie Wayne jersey every Friday during the Colt’s season. She even ran our whole jog-a-thon fundraiser to help our class win a Popsicle party last year.

“We took a little girl that we babysit from time to time to see the new Annie. That’s very good. Interstellar was also a favorite we just saw.”

“I’ve probably been there!

Well, maybe not everywhere, but I’ve been to Antarctica. It was a long trip; you have to go by ship. We made our way to some of the adjacent islands as we made our way to Antarctica, and there are no human inhabitants on them, just thousands of penguins, like a hundred thousand penguins.

It was so cool to walk around a colony of penguins.”

Lance Lantz. “And although this is the first major snow event this year, it is fairly routine for us.”

Lantz said the town has 1,200 tons of salt reserved for the roads this season, and approximately 350 tons on-hand.

Every Saturday for the month of January, the Hussey Mayfield Memorial Public Library in Zionsville is hosting a chess club from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Whether players are chess masters or have never played, people from all ages attend and play for free. Part of the initiative is for players to learn the rules of the game or teach others who are still learning, face various opponents and

My friend and I did Las Vegas a few weeks ago. Oh, we didn’t do Vegas like people who “do” Vegas do Vegas. We did Vegas plain talk like a couple of grandmas without a clue do Vegas.

It all started less than a month ago. I called my best friend, who lives in New Mexico.

“Sherry,” I said, “It seems to me that if you’ve got a best friend, you ought to see each other at least once a year.” I suggested we go to Las Vegas.

“Vegas?” she questioned. “I don’t ever want to go there again.” (It’s a long story.)

“Okay,” I shrugged.

Forty-eight hours later the phone rang. It was Sherry. “I’ve been on the computer,” she gushed.

“Vegas looks wonderful.”

She was all in. So was Annie the travel agent.

Days later Sherry and I were touching down in Phoenix just minutes apart and flying off together to Vegas.

There’s something for everyone, as became apparent when we were winding our way through the hotel casino-- slot machines to the left of us, slot machines to the right of us, slot machines dead ahead and slot machines behind.

And the two of us? We were on our way to “Restorative Yoga” class. Yep! Restorative Yoga. It was that word “restorative” that hooked us. Grandmas have lots of parts that need restoration.

Meanwhile, others in the hotel were spending their money differently. I kept meeting interesting people in the elevator.

One guy looked especially rumpled and crumpled.

“How are you?” I asked.

“Tough night,” he said.

“Lose?” I asked.

He nodded his head.

“And you?” he asked.

“I don’t play.”

“Then you’re already a winner,” he said.

I wasn’t being completely honest. My friend Jane had asked me to put a dollar in a slot machine for her.

I’d bet two dollars and lost them both. Enough of that...

Time to shop. I bought an aqua purse, Sherry a yellow wallet. We saw a show at Harrah’s, ate the best hamburger I’ve ever had, drank the best margarita I’ve ever drunk and each posed with “Elvis.”

“Leave them wanting more” is the motto for entertainers. That’s how we left Vegas. Five days in Vegas is fun. Five days in Vegas with your best friend? Priceless.

Coffee makers then and now Commentary by Ward Degler A popular gift this Christmas was the new gee-whiz, hotsie-tottsie coffee maker. You know, the one where you insert a Plain talk packet of your choice, and the machine makes a fresh cup of anything from a caramel latte to chicken soup.

This is only the latest innovation in a long and robust history of coffee makers.

In the beginning, folks just dumped ground coffee into boiling water and then spent the day picking the grounds from their teeth. That’s the way they made it in the old cowboy movies too.

Gabby Hayes always manned the chuck wagon in those films, and when the coffee was hot he’d toss in a couple of eggshells, “to settle the grounds,” he said.

The French changed coffee making in the early 1700s when they started putting the grounds into a cloth sack and immersing it into hot water. The problem with that was, sometimes they used a sock instead of a sack and the coffee took on the taste of whatever the sock owner had walked through.

In 1780 the French came up with something called the biggin, a two-level coffee maker with a cloth filter in the top. Hot water poured over the filter seeped through the grounds and dripped into the lower pot.

To solve the filter flavor problem, another French inventor came up with the vacuum pot.

Cold water heated in the bottom chamber was forced through a tube into the upper chamber.

The Silex company made one of these totally of glass during World War II when metal for making coffee pots was in short supply. My folks bought one when their old nickel-plated percolator died.

The percolator was a major innovation in coffee brewing. An Illinois farmer named Goodrich patented the concept in 1889. In a percolator, heated water is forced up through a tube into a basket holding the coffee grounds.

Even though most households have turned away from percolators for more modern techniques, the 30-cup models are still popular in most church basements.

The next big news in coffee makers was the electric dripolator, where cold water in a reservoir is heated and sprayed into a basket containing coffee grounds in a paper filter or a filter pack. A lot of folks still use these.

For impatient coffee drinkers, like my wife and I, the Bunn coffee maker is ideal. The water stays hot 24-seven, and brews coffee instantly.

Still, a coffee maker that can make chicken soup is something to think about.

Event aims to help women ‘uncage their beauty’

By James Feichtner • james@youarecurrent.com When it comes to helping women in need, Boone Co. resident Cindy Crowe-Layne says she just wants to make philanthropy a difference in her community.

In October, Crowe-Layne organized a fashion show, called “Uncage Your Beauty,” an initiative to help former Boone Co. Jail female inmates with rocky pasts. Now she’s continuing to pay forward with her next event coming later this month.

Crowe-Layne, owner of beauty salon As the Crow Flies in Zionsville, provided several of these former inmates with free beauty makeovers and attire and presented their stories to the public at the “Uncage Your Beauty” event. Her goal is to help these individuals get a fresh start on life despite their rough pasts.

This event will mark Crowe-Layne’s third “Uncage Your Beauty” event with several new individuals including, for the first time, a gentelman.

“We’re going to basically have the same makeovers, but the format of the show is not necessarily a fashion show,” said event content coordinator Daniel Sung. “Cindy is going to come out and do an introductory speech and will reveal five makeover stories. The makeover stories are shown on screen and as soon as one makeover story happens, that person will come out and be revealed. When that’s over with they’ll all walk out and Cindy will update everybody on some of the past makeover stories and what the Birds Be Free/Uncage Your Beauty program is doing with the past makeovers as far as provding them

A Zionsville Community High School tradition heats up this month.

A group of 10 seniors are preschools paring their talents for the Mr. Zionsville competition, which is at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center.

Mr. Zionsville is decided by a group of outside judges based on opening dance and skit performance and overall crowd reaction, Mr. Zionsville coordinator Jonathan Dehner said.

The other awards given are Mr. Talent (based on the talent section) and Mr. Spirit (picked by the contestants themselves).

The 10 contestants perform a four-minute talent skit. The number of contestants vary each year, Dehner said.

“After three to four skits (by the contestants) both male and female seniors perform skit comedy,” Dehner said. “Most of the skits poke good humor at their favorite teachers and administra-

tors or act out district idiosyncrasies of Zionsville as a whole.”

A set of female masters of ceremonies introduce the contestants.

Dehner said Mr. Zionsville has been running at the school since 1987. Ryan Streeter was named the first Mr. Zionsville.

“The first Mr. Zionsville started to as a fun way to show students that they don’t need drugs or alcohol to have fun,” Dehner said. “It also shows the senior class what it means to work together for the betterment of the group.”

Dehner said it isn¹t always easy to get 40 to 50 seniors to show up for practice and work together.

“It is a great team building activity,” Dehner said.

Dehner, the junior class sponsor, said the event serves as a major fundraiser for the prom, raising more than $10,000 each year. Dehner, a visual arts teacher, said the fundraiser serves as the seniors’ gift to the prom.

New owners of The Rug Gallery plan for the future of a Zionsville staple

By Dawn Pearson • news@ycurrentzionsville.com A new era for a Zionsville business is now taking off on what you could call a magic carpet ride of sorts. After 20 years of building his business, the founder of The Cover story Rug Gallery on Main Street, Mark Hilton, is retiring and has sold the business.

New owners Tom and Karen King decided to purchase The Rug Gallery to coincide with their other flooring businesses, which help customers with flooring upkeep, maintenance and restoration.

Their new tagline is “we know rugs and flooring from installation to maintenance,” according to the former Eli Lilly executive, Tom, and former vice president and branch manager of the Chase Bank in Zionsville, Karen. The couple raised their two sons, Jordan and Kyle, in Zionsville and after extensive research realized The Rug Gallery would be their next business move.

“Mark (Hilton) told us he wanted to retire, and we wanted a rug gallery, and it just made a lot of sense,” Tom said. “It just fit with our other businesses and I hated to see the bricks lose (The Rug Gallery). There has been a flooring store on Main Street since the 1970s.”

But they said they couldn’t have jumped in without the expertise and experience of their manager Sam Habibi.

Habibi has 35 years experience in the flooring game. He left E.F. Marburger to manage The Rug Gallery, and so the team was built.

“When Karen and I were finalizing this we both came to the conclusion at the same time that we can’t do this without Sam,” Tom said.

“Sam is so well known and liked, his connections are endless, and he knows hardwoods, tiles, not to mention all types of rugs.”

The Kings own and run two other companies; Sani-Bright Carpet Cleaning business holds the top service record on Angie’s List for carpet cleaners in the Indianapolis area. The 10-employee business also has a Certified Masters Rug Cleaner, the only one in the state of Indiana, according to Tom. Along with The Rug Gallery and Sani-Bright, they own and operate MicroSeal, a fabric and fiber protection service.

The Kings hope all the businesses will make them stand out from their competitors.

“Some folks may think they can’t afford us since we are ‘on the bricks’ but we are more affordable than the big box stores and only sell the highest quality product,” Tom said.

The Kings asked local business owners and other business people “to tell them the secret of the sale” and found great advise to add to their business plan and well established, customer service oriented business.

“We have hundreds of rugs that Sam hand selected from all over the world at great prices, and we will never have ‘a switch and bait’ sale,” Tom said.

Many customers may also think that rugs are the only product at The Rug Gallery, which is not the case.

“Hard surfaces are the future especially on first levels in homes and we can give them hardwood that will just melt with our rugs,” Tom said.

One aspect that the Kings feels that separates them from their competition is offering free in-home showings and free pick-up and delivery for cleaning.

“Sam and his wonderful presence will pack up three or four or 10 different rugs and samples and we go to the house and roll them out for the homeowner to see how the actual rug will look, and how it will beautify their home,” Tom said.

“This raises customer service to a new high. We are there to inspect the job, ensure the customers are happy and we can even take their payment for the rug they buy at their home.”

We knew this day was coming Sometimes it’s really difficult to let go. When we founded our enterprise back in 2006 we had one newspaper, and every ounce of our focus went directly into it. Now, eight-plus years later and on the brink of launching Current in Geist, our sixth title, on Jan. 27, we actually have let go, in a sense. As we continue to grow our company – and we will add titles well beyond Central Indiana – we’re not nearly as immersed in the news and information the papers convey on a weekly basis or that our web sites do “as news happens.” Our time is fairly fractured, and we are pulled in several directions; that’s actually progress. And so we have relinquished control of the content management of all titles to Sophie Pappas, who now is our editorial director. All the managing editors will report to her –a drastic departure for us – because it just makes good sense.

Sophie came to us last year, having moved back to Zionsville from Iraq, where she was a freelance reporter for multiple media organizations. An Indiana University graduate, her experience is deep, given her relative youth, and she has distinguished herself at Current in multiple ways as a managing editor of one title and eventually two. In coming around to this decision, we had some give and take with Sophie about where we saw the news organization going, and her vision aligned perfectly with ours. She is a believer in research, which, as you might know, powers our content decisions and has since Day 1. She is as organized as they come, she in inventive and she is a solid leader. Having her at the helm allows us to focus on revenue and growth strategies. Mind the gap

Our British English language progenitors are often despaired by our misuse of the words they’ve given us. To be sure, we’ve taken some of the aristocratic air off of the mother-lounge; but in fairness, we’ve also managed to incorporate dozens of new words, ideas and languages and made what could have died with the sun-set of the Empire into a living and vibrant lexicon. In London, one rides a lift, rents a flat, and minds the gap – while we colonials take an elevator, lease an apartment and watch our step.

Over lunch on Jan. 22 at Oak Hill Mansion in Carmel, Gov. Mike Pence with a panel of business and community leaders aim to address the “skills” gap. Inspired by the event invite and amused by how our linguistic forbearers might have interpreted the couplet, I undertook to better understand the phrase. The “gap” refers to the space between skills required for a job and the skills possessed by the would-be jobseeker; but it also indicates a significant breach

between employer expectations of manner, creative thinking and collaboration.

In fact, a 2013 survey of 500 top US executives cited a gap of soft skills as twice as important as technical ability. Leadership and computer ability combined made up the remaining 25 percent of the concern. Is it more difficult to teach someone to keep their elbows off the table or chemistry? The comparison is simplistic; but it manifests a fundamental truth. In failing to inculcate social order across all communities, we may be unintentionally perpetuating isolation, segregation and unemployment.

Kudos to HCLA for creating this opportunity for regional discussion (to attend, visit www.hcla. net). The Brits may be right when they urge us to “mind the gap.” A misstep now could be fatal.

My husband Doo is really annoying me right now. He’s planning his third (or maybe fourth; I’ve lost track) ski trip in as many weeks while completly ignoring my panicked pleas to cease and desist. Do men simply not get how tough it is to be left alone, nay abandoned, with kids during the winter months? Does he not understand that for every night he is gone I’ll morph into a strung-out single mom battling homework and volleyball practice and most likely an illness or two? Why does Doo put me through this Every. Single. JANUARY! And of course, I can never remember to just let him play out his fantasies. Instead, I release my inner Kraken with all the reasons he simply must not go: “We can’t afford it.” “Who will put Maddie on the bus?” “Presidents Day is a ridiculous time to ski; crowds and ticket prices skyrocket.” “But you already have two trips planned!” “Waa, waa, waa!”

As you might imagine, my litany of negations never goes over well. In fact, it generally has the opposite effect, making Doo more determined than ever to have his way. Case in point, he’s currently adding March dates to his snow sabbatical. “Quit raining on my parade!” he growls.

He may have a point. My bitter old ninny routine does dash a few hopes. But Doo is so myopic when it comes to scheduling fun that I feel compelled to provide clarity. He doesn’t consider childcare, carpool logistics, kenneling, money, really anything that goes into preparing for his jetting off to Breckinridge and leaving me at home. And even though I’m confident he’ll eventually face the facts- that a couple of weekends is more than enough to placate his Rocky Mountain yearning- I’d just like to have him validate my concerns before stomping off to sulk in the corner. Or better yet, approach the conversation with “I know I’ve been working a lot, but I’d really like to spend some time with [insert male friend]” and “I understand it will be a pain for you managing everything while I’m gone, but skiing is my passion.”

Unfortunately, so is boating and hunting. He goes through the same neurosis at the beginning of each summer and fall as a new season beckons: “Two months in the Bahamas!” “Eight weekends hunting!” “I love being independently wealthy with no kids!” Alas, it’s usually not until after I’m all lathered up that he returns to this world. I need to remember that I married Doo because he’s a dreamer and because he challenges me to step outside my perfectly practical cube of a box. I just wish it didn’t happen every January.

Palladium CEO reflects on her first two years

Moskalenko said those would be three artists she would love to present that she hasn’t had the opportunity to do so yet.

Moskalenko, who started her job in August 2012, shared with Current some thoughts on what she has observed during her first tenure.

What performers have resonated most with the Paladium audiences?

“As a non-profit, mission-driven organization our goal is to provide a variety of offerings to the community. Now the most popular, and we measure that of course by ticket sales and attendance, is the country series and the songbook series. Those are the strongest genres so to speak. However, we have different performers that do quite well. So when we have ‘80s rock or early ’90s rock artists they sell quite well.”

Are most of those country and Songbook performances sold out?

“We do live in a culture that is very celebritydriven. The sellouts are always going to be the artists who have very high visibility. For example, Tony Bennett was a sellout. Willie Nelson was a sellout. The artists who have attainted celebrity status sell out. Even in the classical music genre, where we present someone like Yoyo Ma. He’s a cellist who has achieved celebrity status worldwide. When we present Yoyo Ma, we know we’re going to sell out the hall. In the spring (April 26) we are presenting Itzhak Perlman, who has also reached celebrity status and we’ll sell out the hall. Then you present a performer who may not have that visibility in any genre whether it’s country, classical or jazz, and it’s more of a challenge to sell out the hall. As a missiondriven organization, we believe that strengthening our programing is not just presenting high-visibility or celebrity-status artists but it’s also to push the envelope in introducing new artists and introducing artists we know will not sell out the hall. But we also know it will introduce our community to new music or art forms. It’s very important we remain innovative in that way and we give artists the opportunity to present their work to Central Indiana.

“Contemporary dance is not something that the masses are attracted to. It’s important to present movement but it’s also a challenge.

“I have lots of favorites. I love attending classical music at the Paladium. The acrostics are perfect for classical musical. It’s a wonderful experience to sit in the Paladium and listen to an orchestra play music. It’s really unequalled.”

Is there a timetable for announcement of the 2015-16 lineup and will it be a similar mix?

“We expect to make our lineup announcement in late spring. We’ll present some big names and at the same time we’ll present new artists. At the same time, we’ll present artists that appeal to a younger generation. I think the mix will be the same. We hope to have increased performances, especially since it’s our fifth anniversary (the Paladium opened in January 2011). We’ve moved our annual fundraising gala and Great American Songbook Hall of Fame to October. The past few years it’s (the gala) been in June. We moved it to Octo-

What’s the best part of your job?

“When the performances are going on, the best part of my job is to look at the faces of our patrons because the experience of enjoying music is everything from ecstatic to joy to happiness. Sometimes it’s a transformational experience and you see it depending on the type of music. Unless I’m out of town, I’m at the Paladium for every show. I see people’s faces and the experiences they have with family and friends. At the end of the day, that is why I do what I do is to be able to provide those moments of inspiration and transformation to our community and the people that come to the concert.”

Ingredients: 1 (12 ounce) package vanilla wafers, crushed very fine; 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut; 1 cup finely chopped walnuts; 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk; 1/4 cup rum and 1 cup flaked coconut.

Civic Theatre’s Young Adult Program will host an additional workshop hosted by industry professionals from the Indianapolis area Jan. 25. The workshop is open to all eighth-grade and high school students. The first two place theater Jan. 11, and the second will be on Jan. 25.

“Both of these workshops will be taught by actors that are living in the area and currently contributing to the Central Indiana theatre scene,” said Kelly Butler-Smith, YAP coordinator. “Civic is happy to welcome John Goodson and Ron Morgan and have them share their knowledge and expertise with students.”

The workshop on Jan. 25 will focus on musical theatre and will be led by Ron Morgan, experienced Broadway performer, guest director and choreographer for this summer’s YAP musical, “Oklahoma!”

Morgan will teach some of the western dance styles used in the show including square-dancing. This workshop will be an opportunity for students interested in theatre-style dance and will be a helpful experience for anyone hoping to audition for “Oklahoma!” this spring. This workshop will be from 2– 4 p.m.

The class has a limited enrollment of 25 students and costs $25. No prior experience or involvement with Civic Theatre is necessary. Enrollment may be made at www.civictheatre.org/education/young-adult-program/yap-workshops/.

Ron Morgan is originally from Indianapolis then lived in New York City where he worked and trained in the performing arts.

He was in the original Morgan Broadway cast of “Starlight Express” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.” New York production work includes industrial trade shows, cruise ships and Off -Broadway events. He has performed and/ or choreographed in more than 15 countries around the world including London and France.

Morgan has choreographed parade units for Disney Productions, the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders for seven seasons and half time shows for the Indiana Pacemates. He assists with casting and show development for Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre where he directs and choreographs throughout the year. Morgan is the owner of Performer’s Edge Dance Theatre School for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

A New Year has rung in and we have likely made some resolutions to change, many not for the first time. Weight loss is wellness popular and the year starts with gyms crammed full of new faces. Unfortunately our track record for keeping New Year’s resolutions is terrible.

So why do we fail? Is it because we didn’t want it badly enough or dealt the wrong cards to change? No, we fail because we still love our old habits, unrealistic goal setting and lack of planning.

Successful change requires making new habits. Tony Robbins has it right that habits are based on our desire to gain pleasure and to avoid pain. To change we must associate bad patterns with negative outcomes that cause pain and new habits with the success that will bring pleasure. We can’t change solely by saying through gritted teeth “I must do this” and/ or “I won’t eat that anymore.” Eventually we go back to old habits still reinforced by our old associations.

Too often we think we need extreme changes to increase our odds, but we should be realistic about our goals. If running from the couch to the fridge makes you wheezy, commit to starting with running five minutes every day for a month instead of an hour to start reaching a marathon goal. Or commit to cooking two times a week starting out for healthier eating. It just takes time and you’ll be much less likely to quit as you build on small successes.

A failure to plan is a plan to fail, whether to get in better shape or lose weight. A specific goal should be detailed even down to what you are going to do week by week. Track your progress and reward yourself as you progress. If you can’t make a good plan, realize then that you need help.

Let’s forget about New Year’s resolutions that we may have already given up. We can make a real change this year.

What’s wrong with sugar?

Commentary by Dawn Parker As humans, we are born with a sweet tooth, and many of us have a love affair with sugar.

With this natural instinct to wellness love sweet things, why is sugar so bad for you? After all, it’s made from the sugar cane plant, right? Well… maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. In order to know, you need to carefully read the ingredient list.

If the sugar is from a sugar cane plant, then it will usually specify something like cane sugar or evaporated cane juice. But did you know that if it just says “sugar” then it is most likely from genetically modified sugar beets?

Aside from that, what’s wrong with sugar? Let’s start with an obvious one - eating a lot of sugar raises blood sugar. The resulting insulin surge (to get blood sugar back into a safe range) can result in fat storage, and thus weight gain. High blood sugar is frequently followed by low blood sugar, which can make your body crave more sugar. Roller coaster rides are fun, but having constant highs and lows of blood sugar can wreak havoc on your body.

If you think of your body like a fire, big logs burn slowly, kindling burns faster and paper burns the fastest of all. If you keep feeding the fire paper, you’ll need to replenish the fire constantly to keep it burning. However, if you use slow burning logs, you won’t need to feed the fire as often. In your body, sugar and simple carbs burn quickly, whereas fiber, fat and protein burn (digest) more slowly and keep your body satisfied longer. So you can see how if you consume a lot of sugar and simple carbs you likely will be hungrier more often and crave more sugar and simple carbs.

• Start the day off with a low sugar breakfast with plenty of protein, fiber and/or fat gets you off on the right track to stay full for hours and lessen sugar cravings.

• Breakfast foods where you’ll find a lot of sugar are cereal, yogurt and juice. If you eat more than the serving size, your sugar intake will skyrocket.

So, you may wonder, what about using artificial sweeteners instead of sugar? I’ll address that question in my next article.

If you are a businessperson I don’t need to convince you that any new legislation on your business usually means more column limits on your liberty and a percent or two off your gross profit.

Did you know that in the last few years, with the congressional “freeze”, congress has been limited to passing less than a couple of hundred bills a year? And yes, many of those bills are to name a new bridge or post office. No joke! That means outside of Obamacare, the impact of legislation on the average American business has been relatively negligible.

Now, why do I say “relatively” here? Because if your business guild tells you of some new legislation that you need to be advised of, it probably came from some bureaucrat in the executive branch with implied powers to legislate your business. This implied power comes from the President himself and is allowed under the constitution. Any additional can be viewed as bureaucratic “over reach”; we call this government meddling, Obama style.

Forgetting the above over reach, do you realize that you have operated your business for the better part of four years without any new federal legislation telling you how to run your business and the world has not come to an end! The point is, if going forward, we had to live only with the

laws currently on the books and no more, and the only new ones would be state regs, those you could possibly impact, the world would still be a pretty good place. Your business would run just fine in a safe environment. You still may want your kids to join you in the business.

As a conservative, this is a lesson for everyone, liberal and conservative alike. Note, all regulation cost percents off gross profit margins.

“Don’t let good be the enemy of great”, as Bill Clinton likes to say. Yes, you can suggest to your congressman a needed piece of legislation, generally for restraining someone else’s trade in your back yard, but it comes at a cost; more hostile legislation in the long run than friendly legislation. I am older than you, trust me on this one!

As I close, consider this. We are about to embark upon a new Republican dominated congress. I believe that these adults will get things done, much in a bipartisan way. Just remember from recent history, less legislation is better legislation. Folks, understand the mission statement here, these congressional people get their meaningful purpose from creating legislation.

The Topkapı Palace is the most visited spot in Istanbul. One of the reasons for this popularity is its claim to house an unrivaled collection of ancient religious treasures important Travel to Jews, Christians and Muslims.

In 1453, Muslim forces under 21-year-old Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople, the last bastion of the Byzantine Empire. Mehmed renamed the city Istanbul and proclaimed it the capital of his Ottoman Empire.

For his new palace he selected a 175-acre site on a hill overlooking the Bosporus that separates Europe from Asia. When completed, what became known as the Topkapı Palace comprised dozens of buildings scattered among four large courtyards, reportedly suggesting earlier Ottoman tent encampments. At its peak, the palace accommodated 4,000 people, including hundreds of concubines eager to catch the sultan’s eye and bear his son. An enormous kitchen, with 10 domes, 20 chimneys and a staff of 800, provided thousands of meals every day. A handsome library stored 3,500 important manuscripts, including an early copy of the Quran. The Tower of Justice, visible from the Bosporus, symbolized the reputed fairness of the sultan, whose justice included public beheadings in the first courtyard near the Byzantine church of Hagia Irene.

ticket booth is near an ornate fountain where the executioner reportedly washed his sword after exacting the sultan’s justice. The former treasury building displays the 86-carat Spoonmaker’s Diamond, the world’s fourth largest diamond. What were once private rooms of the sultans now display religious relics collected from around the empire. For Muslims, the cloak, sword, banner and beard hairs of Muhammad are the most revered. Visitors who check their skepticism at the gate can also view the cooking pot of Abraham, the staff of Moses, the coat of Joseph, the sword of David and the right hand of

John the Baptist.

In 2013, the Topkapı Palace surpassed Hagia Sophia as the most popular destination in Istanbul, with the faithful often lined up to see the religious items. A visit to the harem, once supervised by the sultan’s mother, requires a separate ticket.

Why install a custom range hood?

Although it’s not always seen as flashy or exciting, a range hood is actually one of the most important appliances found in indoors the kitchen. Range hoods typically consist of two parts. First, there is a canopy or overhang that works to capture the smoke, steam, heat and air pollution caused by cooking. Then, a fan or blower extracts all of those pollutants and pushes them out of the kitchen and through the ventilation system. Many range hoods also feature lighting that can aid with cooking tasks.

Without a range hood, cooking in the kitchen becomes a big hassle, as all of the byproducts of your tasty meals, such as heat, steam, smoke and grease, stay trapped in your home. A powerful hood is designed to create a source of fresh air to flow into the kitchen, while also vacuuming up cooking contaminants. They leave your kitchen with improved air quality, and less of that sticky buildup around the cooking area that becomes a pain during cleanup time.

But you don’t need to be a professional chef to install a high-quality range hood. In fact, many homeowners today are choosing to install custom designed range hoods that function both as an integral part of their day-to-day cooking, while also adding a touch of style or elegance to the

overall look of the kitchen.

If you’re considering a custom-built range hood, there are literally thousands of designs that you could use as inspirational starting points. Range hoods come in a variety of construction styles. However, it’s important to remember that full-sized hoods often have more suction and power than the smaller models that fit underneath cabinetry. In the case of range hoods, the larger, higher quality models are often well worth the investment. Remember, any oils or cooking debris that is not captured by the hood can end up on your cabinets, countertops and flooring.
