Program links basketball, faith

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Throughout a career that spans decades, Tom Abernethy has built a basketball resume few Hoosiers can match.

The Carmel resident has been sports an Indiana All-Star, an NCAA champion, an NBA player, an Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer and has owned the popular Indiana Basketball Academy in Indianapolis since 1996.

Yet despite those credentials, basketball is not the center of Abernethy’s life. His Christian faith is. And through his new youth program, Bigger Vision BBall, the former Indiana University star has created a way to combine basketball instruction with Bible teaching.

“Over the last three or four years, I’ve been wanting to be a little more purposeful in developing a program for those who might want to have, every week, a basketball side and a Bible lesson or some spiritual teaching,” Abernethy said. “The concept that I’ve been thinking about for many years is how to provide excellent basketball teaching to kids and a program that will emphasize fundamentals and skills to go hand-in-hand with excellent Bible teaching.”

BBall is designed for boys and girls ages 5 to 13. It combines basketball instruction and Bible teaching with a goal of helping kids become the best players they can be while forging strong Christian character.

Offered through the Indiana Basketball Academy, Bigger Vision BBall is conducted at Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown.

The debut fall session, which included 170 kids, concluded Dec. 16. Registration is under way for the winter session, which runs Jan. 16 through March 10. More than 125 kids have already signed up, and Abernethy expects to exceed the 170 who participated in the fall.

Discovery of wagon fulfills great-grandmother’s birthday wish

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It started as a conversation around the Thanksgiving table.

Over turkey and stuffing, Sara Wood, 89, told her grandson that for most of her life she’d wanted history to see her great-great-great-grandfather’s wagon that family used to make their way from Pennsylvania to Hamilton County in the mid-1800s.

She was confident it was still around; she’d heard stories that it was in Chicago.

So her grandson, Dax Norton, decided to do some digging. And it didn’t take long.

“It took one phone call to find out we didn’t have to go to Chicago,” Norton said. “It was home where it should be.”

Norton, a Zionsville resident and Town of Whitestown town manager, discovered that the wagon was resting in a storage area at Conner Prairie, a museum in Fishers. It is too frail to put on public display, but Woods and a few family members were permitted to get an up close look at the wagon in December.

Woods repeatedly exclaimed, “Oh my goodness!” as she finally got to touch a piece of family history.

“This is my birthday wish,” said Woods, who turns 90 in May, after inspecting the wagon. “Oh, it must have traveled a long way.”

The wagon made its way from Pennsylvania to Hamilton County in 1847, when the Gascho family decided to head west for new opportunities. In 1854, Wood’s great-grand-

father, John Gascho, Jr., bought a 120-acre farm that is still in the family. The pig and cattle farmer also purchased 80 acres in the northeastern part of Noblesville township and 165 acres southeast of Noblesville along Stony Creek, according to “History of Hamilton County, Indiana,” by John F. Haines.

Some of the family’s historic homes are still standing, Norton said, but they may not be for long.

“There are endangered sites that are Gascho farmsteads that development is potentially going to take out of existence,” Norton said. “Grandma wants to make sure some of that still exists for future generations to see.”

Although the wagon isn’t available for the public to see, Conner Prairie guests can see a replica of it in Prairietown, a historic village that lets visitors experience what life was like in Indiana in 1836.

“It’s a very important part of Indiana history, especially Hamilton County history,” said Lana Newhart-Kellen, Conner Prairie collections manager and registrar.

Conner Prairie has had the wagon in its possession since Eli Lilly purchased it for the museum at an estate auction. Lilly knew the Gascho family and its history in the area, Newhart-Kellen said, and believed the historic wagon should be preserved.

The wagon also was instrumental in bringing railroads to central Indiana. William Conner, a fur trader who settled in Indiana in the 1800s and Conner Prairie’s namesake, hired the Gascho family to bring the boiler for the first local train engine to Noblesville.

“This wagon was the only wagon in the county that was big enough to do it,” Newhart-Kellen said.

And for Woods, it was the only thing that could make her lifelong dream come true.

“My grandma is absolutely thrilled to have this birthday wish fulfilled,” Norton said.

Fairy gardens maintain magic

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com They are tiny houses not occupied by people. The residents are never seen, at least not by the homes’ outdoors creator, Anne Gill.

“Maybe the kids see them,” Gill said with a laugh. “Maybe out of the corner of your eye you might see them occasionally.”

Gill’s fairy garden, which contains the tiny houses, is among dozens around Zionsville. With Christmas trees, candy canes and evidence that a small Santa and elves have visited, Gill’s garden has become a popular year-round attraction in front of her Main Street home.

The garden began with a fairy door that didn’t seem to fit any trees at her previous residence. After moving to Zionsville five years ago she discovered that her front yard’s Norwegian Pine was the perfect match for the door.

Not only is the garden decorated for the winter, Gill adds a Ferris wheel for Fall Festival weekend and Halloween decorations in October. In the spring, live miniature hostas and daffodils occasionally sprout around the small homes.

Nine-year-old Clara Carlson created a fairy garden in her yard after reading a book about fairies lacking adequate housing in winter months. She handmade many of the accessories and modifies some elements for the cold weather, such as a lemonade stand that becomes a hot chocolate stand.

Girl gives back to TherAPlay

After seeing firsthand how The Children’s TherAplay Foundation works when a family member philanthropy received services there, Hannah Sevening wanted to give back. TherAplay, 9919 Towne Rd. in Carmel, provides physical and occupational therapy to children with special needs.

“My cousin, he has special needs, and he went there when he was younger.

It did really help him,” the 10-year-old Carmel resident said. “I like to donate to charity, and I like helping give back to the community. I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up.”

Sevening raised $1,336 in three weeks, and she turned that money into 175 goodie bags for the kids, therapists and horses at TherAplay. Some of the items she donated included kazoos, markers, tissues, construction paper and more. For the horses, Sevening purchased items such as sponges and fly spray. The bags were delivered Dec. 6.

year, she made coloring books, cards and purchased toys for Riley Hospital for Children patients. She’s not exactly sure what charity she’ll donate to next year.

Hannah’s mother, Amy, said it’s special that her daughter puts so much focus on helping other kids.

“It’s a wonderful thing as a parent to see our daughter wanting to do things for other kids,” Amy said.

Antique Fan Museum at home in Fanimation headquarters

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Tom Frampton has been a fan of fans for more than 40 years, so he jumped at the chance to bring the cover story Antique Fan Museum to Zionsville, where it’s been housed inside Fanimation’s headquarters on Bennett Parkway since 2009.

The museum has been operated by the Antique Fan Collectors Association since 1997. It was previously inside the Vornado fan facility in Kansas, but company ownership changed in 2007 so the museum needed a new home. Frampton, an Indianapolis resident and Fanimation founder, offered his company headquarters at 10983 Bennett Pkwy. as the museum’s new site. “(I enjoy having) it here, just purely for my own historical interest in fans, but it’s also a great marketing tool for Fanimation because there is only one Antique Fan Museum in the world,” he said. “To be able to host it and put your own collection in there, you couldn’t ask for a better confluence of two things.”

In eight years, the museum has grown from 450 fans to a two-story collection of more than 2,000 on loan from Frampton and other AFCA members.

Fanfare begins

Frampton, 61, grew up in Huntington Beach, Calif. His passion for fan restoration, design and reproduction began in high school when he worked a summer job for Burton A. Burton, an antiques dealer in Pasadena.

He continued working there after graduating, but within two years, Frampton and Burton transitioned to solely producing fans as the Casablanca Fan Co. in 1974.

Casablanca grew production from 100 fans per month to 150 per day to a peak of 3,000 fans per day in 1981. Eventually it had more than 250 employees, Frampton said.

Burton sold the company in 1981. Frampton reached an agreement with the new owner to buy out the custom design side of the business, which allowed Frampton to independently found Fanimation in 1984.

Commentary by Terry Anker For several years, a Mexican brewer has employed Boston-born actor Jonathon Goldsmith as the “most interesting man in the world” to promote its products. In the ads, the bearded, middle-aged gentleman takes note of his improbable life while sipping the trademark beer. A bit tongue-in-cheek, the commercials have become a part of our common lexicon. Whenever someone takes themselves a bit too seriously, yet still seems to be in on the joke, they might be compared to Goldsmith.

Still, they are effective in that the look and posture of the ads invite critique. Each element of the promotion is engineered to take full advantage of our nature as humans. But in allowing for humor, the viewer is invited to criticize the supposition.

Following the lead of a local mayor’s call for No-Shave November to raise awareness for men’s health issues, many of us passed on the daily ritual for a month. Along with many important discussions, more encouragements that men take care to prevent, identify and treat a variety of genderspecific cancers, the beard has invited countless unexpected opinions. Friends, family and acquaintances feel free to comment ad hominem. They demand, “You look terrible – shave it promptly.” Others claim it to be “the bomb.” Thought-provoking or not, is there something incumbent to facial hair that eliminates social barrier to comment?

It’s the most interesting, man.

Snow birds and fudge Commentary by Ward Degler The snow birds are back. Ornithologically, they are slate juncos, but when I was a kid living in Wisconsin’s North Woods, we called them plain talk snow birds.

Today, they gather on the ground under the bird feeders and pick up grain the finches and chickadees drop. Another dozen assemble on the snow-covered sidewalk and peck around for edibles.

They had a different agenda in Wisconsin. I can’t say what they did weekdays, but on Sundays they showed up in flocks outside our back door.

They were waiting for fudge. Dad made fudge on Sundays. I remember that first batch of fudge. We were snowed in that Sunday.

“Let’s make fudge,” Dad announced.

We trooped to the kitchen, and in short order the house smelled of chocolate. The pot bubbled, and at some magical moment the fudge was poured onto a cookie sheet.

Mom dutifully covered the sheet with waxed paper and Dad carried it to the stoop. Then we sat back and waited for the fudge to cool. Our mouths watered.

When Dad opened the back door a half

hour later, a giant flock of snow birds took wing. What they left behind was an empty cookie sheet. They had pecked through the waxed paper and eaten every morsel of fudge.

Up until that moment we had thought kindly of the birds and had enjoyed watching them flit around the yard. That Sunday, however, Dad used language normally reserved for porcupines and badgers when they invaded our trash.

The following Sunday we assembled once again in the kitchen. Again, the gooey dark lava was poured onto the cookie sheet to cool. And out it went to the stoop.

But this time the fudge was protected by the armor of a metal baking dish instead of waxed paper. For the next half hour we were entertained by the harsh drumming of a hundred beaks against the metal pan. It sounded like an assembly of snare drummers.

For hours we listened to their chirping complaints as we savored the delectable taste of fudge.

Occasionally, I need a break from “momming.” I thought I’d orchestrated just such an opportunity when I planned humor a short trip to Kentucky and neither my kids nor Doo could make it. Unfortunately, I came down with a mild stomach bug the first night and missed out on most of the fun. But my couch confinement did allow me to catch some truly horrible programming, including Netflix’s “The 100” (seriously, it’s so terrible, it’s good, even with a low-grade fever and gut rot).

I assumed in my absence the house would fall apart, but I also hoped that my lovely children would take pity on their pukey mom and pull it together by the time I got home. Maybe do some dishes, perhaps make a bed. Amateur thinking, to be sure. I walked in to a Chernobyl-like first floor and was greeted not with “How are you feeling?” but rather “What’s for dinner?” and “When are you going to Meijer?”

I clearly wasn’t sick enough to garner any sympathy, for my family thought nothing of calling for my immediate return to parenting.

Even Doo made mention of a task he wanted me to handle. Apparently, if I am not actively projectile vomiting, I can still go for milk and call on an insurance claim.

It’s a true indication of how blech I felt that I was able to suppress the screams of frustration and disappointment. I simply ignored my precious little selfish angels, made space amidst the unmatched socks and discarded Capri Suns and downed three more awful but oddly compelling episodes of “The 100.” Fend for yourselves, peeps. I’m still on my mommy break.

When I received the Echo my brother-inlaw sent me for Christmas, I was mesmerized. This gadget works like humor the computer that Captain Kirk talked to on “Star Trek.”

You can pose a question (who was the 13th president?), request a song or ask it to call someone. Your wish is her command.

Sales people always make claims like, “It’s so easy to use. Just plug it in.” This is never true, although I got my new desk lamp working in less than an hour.

You must begin your Echo commands with her name, Alexa. I thought I had mastered my new toy. I said, “Alexa, play today’s phone messages.” After she completed the task, I said, “Alexa, now play yesterday’s,” which resulted in her playing the Beatles’ 1962 hit. Then I said, “Alexie, stop the music.” “Alexie, shut up!” “Alexie, play something else.” Nothing worked. Finally, I unplugged it, realizing I would have to reset the darn thing. Unlike Paul McCartney’s, my troubles did not seem so far away.

I was saying Alexie instead of Alexa. The lady in the cylinder is very particular about this kind of thing, like when I mistakenly

call my wife Shirley instead of Mary Ellen.

Mary Ellen read an article that said if the device is plugged in, it is on and always listening to what you say in your house.

Yesterday (this is true), when I plugged my smartphone into my car, I overheard two complete strangers squabbling. I can’t tell you much about the conversation because I only listened for 15 minutes.

Mary Ellen is getting jealous of Alexa.

When I wake up, I say: “Alexa, Good morning!” She reports something that happened on the same date in history. This kind of fascinating trivia is not something my wife or I expect from each other at 8 a.m.

“Mary Ellen, Good Morning!”

“Dick, on this day every week, they pick up the garbage. Get out of bed and take our can to the curb!”

My wife wants her own Echo, but she said it will be hard to tell Alexa to “shut up!”

Well, it worked effectively on me any time I tried to talk during “Downton Abbey.”

Banish the winter blues Commentary by Hannah Hall Although there are enjoyable aspects to every season, winter is the time of year when some people seasonal struggle with symptoms of depression or “the blues.”

Fewer hours of daylight, gray skies and cold weather can stimulate seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in 5 to 10 percent of the population. Symptoms of SAD may include trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, lack of interest in activities that are normally enjoyed, difficulty concentrating, increased or decreased appetite, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, low energy and feeling down or depressed.

There are simple steps you can take to help boost your mood and alleviate SAD symptoms: • When weather permits, bundle up and take daily walks outside. Being outdoors in the fresh air improves overall well-being and can increase energy.

• Commit to a regular sleep/wake cycle even on days when you are not working.

• Minimize screen time in the evening.

Blue light emitted from electronic devices, including televisions, disrupts sleep patterns by suppressing melatonin, the hormone that controls sleep and wake cycles.

• Engage in regular aerobic exercise, which helps decrease stress and lifts

mood.

• Enhance light fixtures inside your home to provide more light.

Talk to your primary care provider if seasonal affective disorder becomes unmanageable and impacts your quality of life.

Your doctor may suggest light therapy, a common treatment for minor SAD symptoms.

During light therapy, people sit or work near a light box – an appliance that mimics outdoor light. Research shows this light may cause a chemical change in the brain that improves mood and provides relief from other SAD symptoms. It’s generally recommended that light boxes be used first thing in the morning for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Placing the light box 16 to 24 inches from your face, keep your eyes open, but don’t look directly into the light. Light boxes can be purchased without a prescription, but be sure to consult your primary care doctor before using one for SAD. Other primary treatment methods for SAD are psychotherapy (counseling) and antidepressant medications. After a thorough evaluation, your doctor can recommend the best treatments for you.

His office smells like chocolate, and there’s a test kitchen down the hall. Yet, what seems to appeal most new hire to Tod Dalberg in his new job is the company’s policy to donate 10 percent of profits to charity.

“The company always has been centered around a give-back,” Dalberg said.

The Zionsville resident recently joined Indianapolis-based Endangered Species Chocolate as director of brand and marketing with a goal to increase awareness and sales of the specialty chocolate so the company can increase its donations to $1 million annually.

“This has been a culmination of my whole career,” Dalberg said.

Beginning with an internship with The Salvation Army in Ghana during college, Dalberg wanted to do something philanthropic.

He serves on the advisory board for The Salvation Army locally but his career veered from charity to retail and brand marketing.

He has worked with Simon Property Group, Musicland and Paradies Lagardere, developing marketing programs and customer segmentation.

Dalberg said Endangered Species Chocolate has experienced “organic growth” since launching nearly two decades ago. He intends to bring the company to the next level by “expanding the number of people tasting our product,” he said.

“Our goal is to carve out a solid niche for us and continue to grow at a double-digit rate,” he said.

Although the chocolate brand has focused on small grocery settings in the past, Dalberg plans to find some nontraditional channels and increase local awareness.

“Owning our home market is a major strategy for us in 2018,” he said.

Although the natural chocolate segment has grown significantly the past decade, Dalberg is confident Endangered Species Chocolate will continue to increase donations to endangered species causes.

“Great culture, great product, achievable goals,” Dalberg said.

Dispatches Housing market update — Sellers in Zionsville continue to see their home values increase but stay on the market longer.

According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Zionsville in November 2017 was $418,328 at an average of $153.06 per square foot, the highest in the area. This sale price represented a 10.1 percent increase from November 2016. However, homes in the city sold in 82 days, 18 days longer than this time last year.

CEO McDermott learns various roles for Center for Performing Arts

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com This wasn’t “Undercover Boss,” but Center for the Performing Arts President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff McDermott did make it his mission to learn others’ jobs. concert “One of the things I took it upon myself to do was I had been involved in management of my law firm for a bunch of years, so I understood management issues, (human resources) issues and budgeting, but there are some things we did at the Center I wasn’t familiar with,” McDermott said. “How our production team works with artists and artists’ crews and how a show does go on. I did some things that were both fun and informative for me. I spent a day on the production team where I helped load in an artist. I came to work in jeans and a black shirt and I helped with everything from rolling out carpeting on the stage to learning how to focus our spotlights.

“I thought that was helpful for me to understand what our production team does. I don’t know how to support people if I don’t really know what they do, so that was helpful.”

He also spent an evening as an usher, putting on a white shirt, tie and read the usher manual from cover to cover.

“They assigned me a mentor and I scanned tickets and helped seat people and really learned the usher and volunteer experience,” McDermott said. “I’m sure I just skimmed the surface. It led me to experience what areas our staff do that were new and different from anything I’ve ever experienced before.”

McDermott took on those roles when he served as interim president for nearly 13 months. He was promoted to the full-time position Aug. 30, 2017.

McDermott, who has lived in Carmel for more than 30 years,

previously had been a partner with Krieg DeVault law firm. He is now serving in a more limited role of senior counsel with the firm.

Prior to becoming interim director of the nonprofit organization, McDermott joined the Center’s board of directors in 2010 before the campus opened in 2011.

McDermott said there was a learning curve in programming as well.

“We have a great vice president of programming in Doug Tatum,” he said. “Doug was hugely helpful to me in learning what he does and how he does it and the intricacies of programming and schedules and the business side of that.”

McDermott said he has met with other performing arts centers directors and attended a national conference last year with artists and booking agents.

“Everyone brings some of their own tastes and choices to programming,” McDermott said. “One thing I felt strongly as a board member and brought with me to this position is not to tell Carmel, Indianapolis or central Indiana what they should see but bring to them what they want to see. At the same time, it’s sort of our responsibility to bring them some things that stretch the imagination and open them up to new experiences. One thing important to me is to make sure we are doing both, (also presenting) first-class acts or artists. Some of them are going to have more mass appeal than others. We have a responsibility to try to present all types.”

McDermott said country acts continue to be popular. Many rock and pop acts also have been popular.

“I think it’s more artist-specific even more than genre-specific,” McDermott said.

Husband-and-wife couple Doug Whisman and Ji-Eun Lee have enjoyed success in their Fishers music music academy since 2004, and now one of their coaches has a new idea.

Jeannie Logan, a voice instructor, recently pitched the idea of JeanLogan nie’s Cabaret, and her first class is already full.

“It’s quite a bit outside of what our norm is,” Whisman said of the new program. “This is different because it’s really each class is only five students preparing to put on their own cabaret-style concert.”

Students attend a two-hour Saturday class for six weeks. Logan coaches them on their performance. They then perform for approximately 30 minutes by themselves during the cabaret. According to Lee, the program provides kids a chance to perform outside a school recital.

“Kids don’t really have a chance to perform more than a song or two maybe in front of their family or parents. They can participate as students in a school talent show or in a recital, but time is very limited,” Lee said. “This cabaret takes them

to the next step of being a real performer.

Jeannie will coach them on how to interact with the audience, not only parents and family, but the strangers. It will be a great step up to be a real performer.”

America’s oldest church Commentary by Don Knebel Visitors to colonial New England hoping to discover the oldest church in the United States discover instead that travel they are more than 2,000 miles too far east.

Soon after Christopher Columbus landed in what he mistook for India in 1492, the Spanish government began sending missionaries to what are now Mexico and the American Southwest to convert the “Indians” to Christianity. In 1598. a group of Christianized Tlaxcalan Indians settled in what is now Santa Fe, N.M., and built a small church over the remains of a 13th century kiva, an underground room once used for religious rituals. In 1609, Spanish settlers joined the small community of the Tlaxcalans, who enlarged their church under the guidance of Franciscan monks.

The church became known as the San Miguel (St. Michael) Mission. When Spanish soldiers arrived to protect the area, they worshipped in San Miguel along with the Tlaxcalans and the other residents.

In 1680, indigenous Pueblo people

throughout what is now New Mexico organized and carried out an armed revolt against Spanish control. The Tlaxcalans, loyal to the Spanish, took refuge in San Miguel Mission. Flaming arrows directed at the church set fire to the wooden roof, which soon collapsed, killing the Tlaxcalans. The Pueblo Revolt killed 400 Spaniards and temporarily drove the Spanish from New Mexico. When the Spanish returned in 1692, they restored San Miguel Mission for use as a military chapel. A colorful altar screen was added in 1798. After San Miguel was damaged by an earthquake in 1872, stone buttresses were added to strengthen the exterior walls. A new bell tower was added in 1887 to replace one toppled by the quake. Today, San Miguel is owned by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, who hold Mass every Sunday in the oldest church in the United States.

We hear this one all the time: I feel badly because Randolph lost his job at the pro shop. In an grammar guy effort to have better grammar we can often make it worse. So, let’s figure out why the correct phrase in the above instance should be I feel bad.

The key here is knowing the difference between action verbs and linking verbs.

It seems rather obvious how to identify an action verb: It does something active.

Active verbs like gobble, decide, shimmy, impeach and frolic tell us the action being performed in a sentence. Linking verbs, on the other hand, connect the subject of a sentence to information about that subject. Linking verbs do not describe an action. Therefore, use adverbs to describe action verbs and adjectives to describe linking verbs.

Sensory-related verbs like feel, look, smell, taste and sound can either be used as linking verbs or active verbs, depending on the context of the sentence.

In our example, where poor Randy got the heave-ho from the pro shop, feel

is used as a linking verb. I feel bad describes the state of my emotions because Randolph was let go. The only way I feel badly is correct is if, after being fired, Randolph got in his souped-up golf cart, put the pedal to the metal and – in an act of blind rage – he ran over all 10 of my fingers as I carefully attempted to replace one of my several divots, rendering my sense of touch useless. In this case, I feel badly because Randolph lost his job at the pro shop would be correct.

With sensory verbs, it’s important to identify whether the verb is an active verb or a linking verb. The way I always remember this takes me back to my AP English teacher, Dr. Ballard, who used this example: Only Captain Hook feels badly.

Because he has a hook for a hand.

Would Captain Hook make a good masseuse? No, because Captain Hook feels badly. And he probably feels pretty bad about that.
