O’ Christmas tree – Wondering where to dispose of your old Christmas tree? According to officials at Ray’s trash services, Zionsville residents may put old trees in their garbage bins during the month of January, but the trees must be broken up into smaller pieces. If residents are unable to break up their trees, they should put the tree out with their bins on their monthly large trash pickup day. GreenCycle in Whitestown is also accepting trees. According to their web site GreenCycle is closed until Jan. 5, but will take trees upon opening Jan. 6.

Cookie sales start Jan. 11

Once a year Girl Scouts are invited to attend a special event to learn about selling cookies along with crafts, safety lessons and an diversion opportunity to earn a patch. But the primary benefit to attending?

Being able to taste every Girl Scout cookie.

It’s cookie rally time, which for Girl Scouts is an opportunity to learn everything they can about the cookies and safe selling practices. It also means that the time to buy these annual cookies is just around the corner.

“People will ask the girls ‘what’s your favorite,’ and it gives them a pitch, something that they can talk about,” said Debbie Forbeck, Girl Scouts service unit manager for Zionsville. “This is a fairly young unit right now, and a lot of them might not have tried all the cookies before. If they try them they can talk about them.”

Forbeck estimated that 150 Girl Scouts have attended the rally in years past. She is hopeful that with so many younger Scouts the turnout will be high.

The evening is also about meeting new girls of different ages and getting exposure to troops at the other schools.

“It’s always nice to get the service unit together,” she added, since the large Zionsville unit does not

generally have opportunities to meet.

Cookie sales start Jan. 11. Anyone interested in ordering cookies may reach out to any Girl Scout that they know, or visit GirlScoutCookies.org and search for hot spots or cookie booths. This will indicate troops selling in nearby public locations such as grocery or hardware stores.

The sale of cookies began in 1917 when a Girl Scout troop in Oklahoma baked cookies as a service project and sold them to finance troop activities.

Today nearly 200 million boxes are sold annually. All of the revenue earned after paying the baker stays with the local council - 75 percent of the cookie sales.

Do you want to be a Girl Scout?

Girl Scout registration was held at the HusseyMayfield Library Dec. 17. The event allows girls interested in scouting to be placed with an established troop or put in contact with other families looking for a troop in the same age group. While it only takes three girls to start a troop, a minimum of five is ideal. Roughly 11 new troops have been registered in the Zionsville area this school year.

Topics will include Are Periods Running Your Life, Midlife Transitions and Hormones, and The Secrets to Healthy Aging.

L’Ecole Francaise students celebrate winter news@currentzionsville.com Students at four Zionsville elementary schools’ before-school French education programs celebrated the end of the semester with a winter fête on Dec. 17. They performed songs and skits to demonstrate their language skills then enjoyed traditional holiday foods such as Bûche de Noël - or Yule Log cake.

More than 40 children from kindergarten through fourth grade are enrolled, with programs at Pleasant View and Eagle offering separate beginner and advanced instruction. Registration for second semester is now open and new students of all levels are welcome. St.Vincent joins Medicare ACO St.Vincent, a member of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and nonprofit health system, has been selected as one of 89 new Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations.

Habitat for Humanity of Boone County dedicated a home built by the Zionsville Presbyterian Build committee last month, for Charity a single mom, Valerie Bevard, and her two sons, Clayton and Camden. This year’s ZPC build, at 124 Ball St. in Lebanon, had more than 30 church volunteers.

More than 150 volunteers from the Boone County communities came together to provide the volunteers needed for the ZPC build.

Bevard and her sons moved into their new home just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Steve Furste, executive director for the Boone County Habitat affiliate, said: “This is such a great day as it gives us the opportunity to celebrate yet one more home dedication and provide a new home for one more Boone County family in need. We at Habitat are so blessed to have so many great volunteers and business partners who help us each year.”

Valerie Bevard, the new homeowner, said: “Habitat has given my family a fresh and new start. With Christmas right here it is the best present ever. I am so grateful for everything that Habitat and all the volunteers have done for me and my family.”

A special present of beds for each family member was also given to the family.

Handbell choir and instrumental quintet

By Brittany Fleetwood • news@currentzionsville.com Last month, the Handbell Choir and Instrumental Quintet of St. Francis Episcopal Church performed a holiday concert to Zionsville guests at The Sanctuary located on downtown Zionsville’s main street. Playing many Christmas favorites and holiday carols, the concert was free and open to the public.

Directed by A. Lee Barlow, the Director of Music & Organist at St. Francis Episcopal Church, the handbell choir and quintet is comprised of many volunteer instrumentalists from St. Francis and the surrounding community.

Both ensembles play on a regular basis for worship at St. Francis, and have played many other venues within the Zionsville Community.

The Handbell Choir played many Christmas favorites during the holiday season at The Sanctuary.

The Community Foundation of Boone County has announced that applications for 2015 scholarship opportunities, including the four-year, full-tuition Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, are now available on the CFBC website: www.communityfoundationbc.org. The deadline to submit applications for the Lilly Scholarship is Jan. 21 and for general scholarships is Feb. 10.

Since CFBC awarded the Park first Todd Getty Mental Attitude Award in 1995 to now-Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens, more than $3 million in scholarships has been awarded to more than 1,000 area students. Today, the Community Foundation of Boone County manages 45-scholarships, which generated more than $270,000 in scholarships to deserving high school students in 2014.

Students from across Boone County use scholarship funding to pursue education beyond high school, be it vocational training, undergraduate studies or graduate studies. Some CFBC scholarships consider financial need as a component, while others are merit-based only.

Back to the future Roberta Martin explores family history and opportunities in genealogy

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Even as a child Roberta Martin, of Zionsville, enjoyed hearing stories about her family and learning about her past, so the lack of information about her mother’s cover story grandfather always intrigued her. She finally decided to research the family history to learn more.

“I thought I would find this answer and be done,” she said.

Fifteen years later his identity is still a mystery but in the meantime Martin, a former tax attorney, has discovered a new career: volunteer staff genealogist of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center’s genealogy library. Additionally she was recently named Boone County Genealogist by the Indiana Genealogical Society - an honor bestowed upon one genealogist in each Indiana county.

Over the course of this year, she will provide genealogical advice and counsel to persons such as students, professors and family researchers within Boone County.

She is also responsible for familiarizing herself with the county’s genealogical records, and she will serve as liaison between the Indiana Genealogical Society and Boone County to address

issues regarding records preservation.

• Get organized from the beginning. Martin likes to bring her “Mary Poppins bag” filled with a clipboard, loose-leaf paper, handheld scanner, laptop/tablet, flash drive, coins for copies, stapler, pencils, pens, sticky notes and water bottle among other things.

• Always record your sources and make copies. Write down every book that has been opened and what was found to avoid backtracking.

• Start without an endpoint in mind. Limit yourself to one family or one objective at a time.

Calendar turns and hopes soar New Year’s greetings, folks! We hope your holidays were fulfilling in multiple ways. As last week’s Current detailed a snapshot look ahead to this year, we’re compelled to offer you one of our own, and it’s a bit different. So without further delay, our top hopes for 2015: Transparency in local government – Never should the citizenry have to wonder if what is being discussed or presented is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The money our elected officials appropriate actually is your money, and the story behind its allocation is as important as the target of is expenditure.

Fairness on the campaign trail – The primary election is five months away. There are several races that will be hotly contested.

Some mainstays are going to be challenged by newcomers. Just how everyone comports himself and herself will go a long way toward earning the voters’ respect and, perhaps, votes. We’ve seen things turn ugly in our area, and it doesn’t have to be that way.

Commitment to the arts – This is not what we’re asking of government; it’s what we are asking of you. There are multitudes of what we call “art outings” in our midst that feature incredible talents in visual, performing, literary and other forms of art. Our independent market research tells us the arts are vitally important to our readership, but sometimes attendance at art-related opportunities is lacking. Make it a point to participate on one or more levels.

Having each other’s backs – From I-65 to the west, U.S. 31 in the center and Ind. 37/I-69 to the east, sadly we have thoroughfares that the bad guys recognize as easy getaway routes. If you see suspicious vehicles, persons or criminal activities in our area, let the police know forthwith. We’re all fortunate to live in well-protected communities, but none is impervious. “Deputize” yourself and make a difference.

Be careful amongst traffic

In a time when most of us keep the Internet, via our trusty smartphones, in our pockets, we have immediate access to the world’s accumulated “wisdom” anytime and anywhere. And with each new day, our inboxes burgeon with unsolicited instruction from strangers purporting to be close acquaintances – financial advice, relationship advice, market advice, spiritual advice, dining advice, shopping advice – we are all fully advised.

For some, a few words, slogan or bumper sticker is all that’s required to help them course correct. Others have bookshelves filled with selfhelp tomes. They cannot get enough insight in their quest to stay on the straight and narrow.

For me, it falls somewhere in between. The truisms stuck to the car in front of me in traffic (we are most often reminded to COEXIST) are often polite enough; but they fail to adequately inspire.

Yet chasing wisdom from the latest faddish book only has me seeking my cheese or looking for

the right seat on the bus. Give me a casual lunch with a good friend. Wisdom best comes from exchange with smart people who care enough to engage in our lives – directly!

Still, we all seem to be seeking direction. How can we lose weight? How can we live a better life? How can we find our way? Could it be that the answers elude us because they are too complicated? Or, could it be simply that we are unwilling (or unable) to take action? A recently-married young associate asked for advice on a happy home. Decide what matters. Really, do we care about guest towels, decorative soaps or rules about feet on the sofa? If we limited our contention to the few things that are required for our happiness, couldn’t we live a good deal easier?

Should we be careful to avoid being care full?

It’s that time again, folks, to set ourselves up for failure and criticism and perhaps even an infinity scarf of guilt should we fail in our lofty endeavors. I’m speaking of course of making New Year’s resolutions.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the idea of taking a moment for reflection to see where changes and/or improvements can be made in our lives is wonderful. You can start over, recreate yourself and set goals to encourage a better you. The problem I have with NYR’s is that they are just too darn impractical.

For starters, most of us are coming off a four-week marathon of family, shopping, traffic, flu-like symptoms, meat and booze, and in the post-race tent, we are in absolutely no condition to be analyzing our behavior. We need to hydrate and rest, and simply recover from our ordeal before making promises about weight loss and financial security. February 1st is a far better date to be thinking critically about the forthcoming year. We could call them the Super Bowl Resolutions instead!

Another complaint I have is the time span of NYR’s. 365 days is way too long. To wit, if I don’t go back and reread this annual column in July, I will have already forgotten 90 percent of what I’m supposed to be gunning for. Like many of you, I’m simply trying to keep my children alive and show up to work with matching shoes each day; I have absolutely no extra hours to even ponder renovating the carpeted master bath (carpeted!) or training for The Mini, let alone actually doing them. Perhaps whittling it down to New Week’s Rez’s would be more manageable.

And let’s be honest. I’m never going to successfully meet all of my NYR’s anyway, which for me, leads to guilt and self-criticism. I’m a List Girl, and if I put a commitment to paper, I feel compelled to check it off. Until I do, that “thing” will not only haunt me, but judge me in its haughty two-dimensional space, wreaking frustration and anxiety in my already chaotic world.

So this year, I’m trying something new. I’m not planning to make any New Year’s promises right away, but rather let a few potential ones simmer while I get my exhausted family back on track. Then I’ll select three that I can reasonably make headway on by April. At spring break, I’ll reassess, adjust where necessary, and continue on for the second quarter. Furthermore, there will be no evidence, written or otherwise, of my chosen goals. True, this will mean less accountability, but hopefully and more importantly, also less stress.

Let’s resolve to fill 2015 with achievable, short-term objectives. Go team! Peace out.

Don’t bank on privacy Commentary by Dick Wolfsie What’s the name of your favorite cartoon character?

Are you teetering between Bart Simpson and Sponge Bob? If you’re from my humor generation you might be torn between Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

This was the dilemma I faced this holiday season while creating a security profile to bank online. I was asked a series of personal questions so if I forgot my password, they could confirm my identity by matching my answers.

Because the questions are all about me, I won’t have to scribble my responses in black marker on the side of my printer where I already store dozens of secret passwords. When I check my balances at 3:00 a.m. after a bout of insomnia or a six-pack of Bud Light, I can enter my code incorrectly up to three times, but they’ll still allow access if I can remember the following: My most unique characteristic? I vacillate between feeling unbelievably funny and romantically dashing. On a bad day, I’d have to go with incredibly annoying. That gives me a one-out-ofthree chance of getting that right. This all depends on what day I forget my password. Better not use that one.

American Literature. Okay, how about Moby Dick?

Wait, they might not accept animals. Just to look smart I’m going to say King Lear. But I know if I get asked this under pressure after midnight, I’m going to end up saying Bugs Bunny again.

My favorite flower? I don’t have a favorite flower. If I indicate rose, there’s a good chance I’d say chrysanthemum the next time. Well, maybe not. I don’t even know how to spell it.

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Out West, somewhere in California. It’s been 35 years. Give me a break.

My first girlfriend? I’m going to say it was my wife, Mary Ellen. That’s not true, of course, but if I said Cindy or Ginny, she’d never let me forget it. But I would forget it. Which means I can’t pay my bills online because I can’t remember my password.

What college did you apply to but not attend?

Well, that would be all the colleges that rejected me, so let’s see: Syracuse, Northwestern, Boston University…

Birds do weird things Commentary by Ward Degler Ever notice the weird things seagulls do? Like sitting on the beach, all facing the same direction. Or standing on one leg.

Plain talk Apparently, there are reasons for these and other seagull oddities. Take facing the same direction.

Turns out, they are facing into the wind. If they suddenly need to take flight, all they have to do is spread their wings, and like magic, they are lifted into the air.

How about the leg thing? Apparently, they do that to warm their legs, one at a time. Makes sense I guess since seagulls don’t have a lot of meat down there.

Gulls also like to glide through the air as close to the ground or water as possible. They do that for two reasons. Ground effect gives the birds increased air pressure close to the ground for easier flying. Over the water it gives them a better view of their dinner choices. Gulls will eat just about anything, but they prefer fish.

Pelicans use ground effect for long glides too. They also look a lot like pterodactyls from a science fiction movie, gliding silently across the screen. They are usually looking for fish too, and when they spot one, they fold their wings, point their nose down, and plummet like a torpedo straight into the water.

I’ve unearthed a few other interesting bird things. The favorite meal of kelp gulls in South

America is whale meat. The gulls circle overhead, and when the whale surfaces, it dives down and takes a bite. Reminds me of mosquitoes in my back yard last summer.

A male hornbill seals his mate inside the nest, leaving only a small opening for food. He doesn’t let her out until the young fledge.

Palm cockatoos attract mates by chewing off a tree branch and drumming against a tree with it. Swifts mate in flight – at 200mph. And those sweet, singing little house wrens? They will viciously sabotage the nests of all other birds in their own nesting area.

Nuthatches build a ring of resin around the edge of their nests to keep predators out. Wood ducks nest in high-up holes in dead trees. They fly straight into the hole at 65mph, proving they have the greatest braking system in the universe. And when the young hatch, Mom pushes them out the door. They literally bounce like rubber balls when they hit the ground.

A group of gulls is called a colony, while it’s an exaltation of larks, a peep of chickens, a gaggle of geese, a murder of ravens and a parliament of owls.

And, oh yeah, ostriches stick their heads in the sand looking for water.

Main St. in Carmel, IN on January 16. comedy Dugan, known for his voice work on Bob & Tom as the Gruff, short-tempered Bart McAllister, has long been a fan of developing both his comedy and voiceacting chops.

“I deliver the bulk of voice-over from my closet-sized studio, and this is also where I finalize writing a great deal of the comedy material,” Dugan said. “I like this setup because it is very isolated and allows me to focus on the project at hand. I also like, and need, the live comedy performances, whether they are on stage or at an event somewhere or as a guest with Bob and Tom, just to see if I have any social skills left after spending so much time in the isolation of a soundproof closet.”

Dugan’s unique brand of stand-up comedy has landed him onstage at numerous corporate events

and comedy tours, including appearances on Comedy Central, HBO, FOX and the Arsenio Hall Show.

Dugan avoided kindergarten after his parents moved to Carmel, where children weren’t required to attend before moving into the first grade, unlike most Indianapolis schools. He attributes a large portion of his comedy influences to his parents.

“It’s inbred,” Dugan said. “Wait, I don’t mean to say I’m inbred, and I have the non-webbed toes to prove it. I guess I’m trying to say what I do is a hybrid of both my mom and dad’s humor. Dad with his clever, dry and twisted humor and my mom with her humble, yet expressive, self-effacing humor, never thinking she was being funny, but often hilarious. She preferred others being in the spotlight and was the perfect audience with her distinctive, contagious laugh. I think down deep, she was always in it for the laughs.”

Though he’s appeared on many shows and lived as far as Los Angeles, Dugan says he always missed being away from Carmel.

“When coming back for visits, I can’t describe how excited I would get to see family and friends

that still lived here, to see what changes in town had occurred,” Dugan said. “I kept moving back here, so obviously it must be very close to my heart. It will always seem like home. Now there is always something for me to do. Non-stop laps on a roundabout is one of my favorite pastimes.

Maybe I should have gone to kindergarten.”

Dugan is currently part of the “Cabin Fever Comedy Tour,” which makes its first stop at Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream in Carmel. Dugan hopes for as enjoyable a tour as his most recent stops performing for company Christmas parties.

“One was at a large company in Northern Indiana and most of the employees were Amish,” Dugan said. “15 minutes into the show, one of the gentlemen approached the stage and asked if I would read a note describing a vehicle that was illegally parked and blocking the catering truck from leaving. Midway through reading the note in front of these 600 people, I realized it was my car, and as a reflex said on mic, “Oh, that’s mine.”

Dugan is also currently working on a new comedy album, saying he hopes to have it released before the end of winter.​

What’s better than pasta?

Commentary by Ceci Martinez We are lucky to live near a culinary mecca, Chicago. In a recent trip my husband and I, after exploring the city all day and with much anticipated excitement about our dinner, ended up in a busy street corner discovering by accident “Eataly Chicago Restaurant.” This is a place where you can experience amazing food from the moment you walk in the door, with 63,000 square feet of space, dozens of aisles of grocery, 22 different restaurants and bars, you can easily spend half a day in this food palace! The mission statement in their pasta station is: “One of the things that makes pasta so perfect is how simple it is”. This delicizioso dish “Spaghetti with Lemon” is exactly that! ing. Transfer pasta to a big skillet (preferably nonstick). Add butter and 1/2 cup pasta water.

Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. The heat helps the starch in the water meld with the fat from the butter, which prevents the Grana Padano from becoming stringy in the finished dish. Reduce heat to low, and mix in Grana Padano and cracked pepper; the cheese will melt into the buttery water, creating a sauce as the pasta finishes cooking. Toss pasta with tongs to thoroughly coat it with sauce. Keep everything at a gentle simmer just until cheese melts and sauce thickens slightly, about 1 minute. Remove from heat, then stir in Pecorino Romano, (always add Pecorino off direct heat; it clumps when cooked.)

Zest lemon over the pasta. If pasta looks dry, toss it with a bit more pasta water until it has a glossy coating. Serve pasta and drizzle each plate with oil and lemon juice, and garnish with more cracked pepper. Serve immediately.

The Perfect Peanut Butter Banana Open-Face Sandwich Ingredients: 4 ounces creamy peanut butter, 1 slice 1/2–inch thick whole wheat bread, 1 whole slightly ripe banana, and 1 tablespoon honey (optional).

Directions: Spread peanut butter evenly on the slice of bread. Peel the banana and use a knife to slice the banana in to 1/4 inch slices, then lay them on the bread. If you are feeling adventurous, pour 1 teaspoon of honey in a spiral across the entire piece of bread.

Simply Yoga offers class for tots news@currentzionsville.com After a rousing rendition of “Ring Around the Yogi,” with pauses to pose like a dog, kangaroo or frog, a group of six toddlers fitness and their moms took a moment to stretch, focus on breathing and hug their yoga buddy - a small stuffed animal.

Tots Yoga is designed for parents with children between 14 months and 4 years. Instructor Anne Johnson wanted to share yoga and its benefits with her daughter - two-year-old Amelia.

Johnson teaches prenatal yoga and a Mommy & Me class for parents of newborns, but “when they start crawling it makes it a little more challenging,” Johnson said.

She pulled from her experiences with children to make yoga fun, incorporating songs, dance and play while referencing animals to many of the traditional poses.

“I noticed with Amelia that they’re in the stage of mastery,” said Johnson. “If you give them a skill it’s amazing to see the kind of focus they can have in order to accomplish that new ability.”

“For toddlers to be focused on something at that age is pretty cool,” she said.

Johnson is eager to see how the children respond to the new class. “It builds their confidence, helps build body awareness and they get to use their bodies. And what toddler isn’t all about using their body?”

“She sees me doing yoga,” said Libby Rodefeld of her two-year-old daughter Lily, “so it’s a fun thing to do together.”

The format is very laid back, allowing kids (and parents) to perform skills at their comfort level.

“It’s all about playing, and having fun and being silly,” said Johnson. “It’s very low pressure, everybody is doing a great job.”

Outsmart germs this winter Commentary by Dr. Jessica Swenberg There are things to like about winter, but the prevalence of illness isn’t one of them. Preventing germs from spreading is wellness even more important during winter because colds, flu and other diseases tend to be more common during this time of year. And if one member of your family becomes ill, taking preventive steps at home to help ensure others don’t “catch it” can be challenging. Here are some tips for battling germs this season: • Be diligent about hand washing. Thorough and frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent germs from spreading. Use soap and warm water, and rub hands together for at least 20 seconds.

If a sink and soap are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Small bottles of hand sanitizer are great to stash in your car, purse or briefcase for cleaning hands on the go.

• Cover your cough. If possible, cough or sneeze into a tissue and then immediately discard. Resist coughing or sneezing into your hand, as you’ll spread germs to the next thing you touch. If tissues aren’t readily available, cough or sneeze into your elbow.

• Use disinfectant. If someone in your family is sick, use antibacterial wipes to disinfect frequently used surfaces and items, such as phones, remotes, computer keyboards and doorknobs. These are also good strategies to use at work, especially if you share space with co-workers.

• Use disposables. Germs linger on cloth hand towels and dish cloths, creating a breeding ground for germs. If someone in the house is ill, consider using disposable paper towels instead. After an illness, it’s a good idea to change your toothbrush as well.

• Generally avoid sharing drinks, food and lip balms with others. It’s also important to take care of yourself to help your immune system fight off disease. This means eating nutritious foods, exercising and getting enough sleep. If you haven’t already received a flu vaccine, talk to your doctor. Also be sure to consult your primary care doctor if you become ill, and symptoms worsen or persist for more than a few days.

Prime Car Wash expands

By Brittany Fleetwood news@currentzionsville.com Last month, Prime Car Wash welcomed the Zionsville and Carmel community with the grand opening of their second now open location on Michigan Road.

With 967 free car washes in just one opening weekend, Prime has been successful in expanding their market. Competing with two hundred other car washes in the Indianapolis Area for only a month now, Prime offers something different than your traditional car wash experience. With a full-service, detailed wash customers experience both an interior and exterior cleaning, as well as express detailing services. Customers can also enjoy amenities from the store’s Prime Café, which includes coffee, free Wi-Fi and the use of the store’s iPads while waiting.

Founded in 2012 by Robert Hatfield, Chris Galloway and Brent Oakley, Prime was built on the idea that their car wash could offer more to the community. Both chiropractors, Hatfield and Halloway originally founded ProWellness Chiropractic in Fishers, and Oakley, who was the original inspiration for their concept and Prime’s CEO, used to be a medical sales representative for Medtronic, a medical device company.

However, the three businessmen collaborated and wanted a more complete experience from their car wash that was different, better and

Some car washes offer just inside cleaning while others offer just outside cleaning, but their car wash would by a hybrid of the two ideas and offer both. “We’re different. We pride ourselves on cleaning both the inside and out,” says Rob Johnson, the general manager of Prime’s Carmel location. “We believe our customers deserve the best service.”

For both an interior and exterior cleaning, Prime charges $24. Other detailing services, including hand wax, hard surface cleaning, wheel bling, seat treatment, scuff removal, carpet shampoo, compounding and clay barring, cost around $30.

Abydos: Triads and Trinities Commentary by Don Knebel

The Great Temple at Abydos is famous for its richly detailed scenes of Egyptian gods. Those scenes can help explain why many Muslims believe the Christian doctrine of the travel Trinity has pagan origins.

Abydos, the burial site of pharaohs as early as 3,000 B.C., later became associated with Osiris, a legendary pharaoh considered god of the afterlife. Popular stories told how Osiris had been killed and then miraculously fathered the falcon-faced god Horus with his sister/wife Isis. Pharaohs saw themselves as earthly manifestations of Horus and aspired to live on like Osiris after their deaths.

In about 1280 B.C., Pharaoh Seti I built a temple on the west bank of the Nile at Abydos to honor himself and the triad of Osiris, Isis and Horus.

Reliefs show Seti I and the gods, with Osiris depicted with a curved beard reflecting his death, Isis crowned with the sun disk and Horus shown holding a cross-shaped ankh. Seti’s son Ramses II, often considered the pharaoh of the Exodus, expanded the temple, showing himself with the Abydos triad in similar, but less well-executed, scenes. The well-preserved temple walls also contain a unique list of earlier pharaohs, minus

the female Hatshepsut and the short-lived Tutankhamen.

When the Greeks conquered Egypt, they took home from Abydos images and stories of Osiris, Isis and Horus. Isis became popular throughout the Greek and later Roman world as the “Queen of Heaven” and “Mother of God.” The Roman Catholic Church later adopted these titles for Mary, the mother of Jesus. Artists depicted Mary as Isis, with an Egyptian-style sun crown.

Early paintings of Mary with Jesus on her lap mimicked temple scenes of Isis nurturing Horus.

As a result of these titles and images, Muhammad mistakenly concluded that the Christian Trinity consists of God, Mary and Jesus, which he repudiated as a pagan idea. The Quran also denounces any trinity including Mary.

The carvings in the temple of Seti I, the finest remaining examples of Egyptian bas-relief, are reason enough to visit Abydos. Seeing the bases for reconstructing the order of pharaohs and for confusion over the Holy Trinity is a bonus.

Removing the master bath garden tub for a larger shower

EXISTING BATHROOM: The owners of this home located in the Centennial subdivision in Westfield, had lived with blueprint for their existing master improvement bathroom for nine years.

“The original bathroom functioned okay; however, we quickly grew tired of the cosmetics. The primary goal was to enlarge the shower area and maintain a smaller tub area.”

EXPANDED SHOWER & FREE-STANDING TUB: The large garden tub and existing shower surround was removed to create the new layout of the expanded shower and free standing tub.

The plumbing was modified for the new location of the tub and shower fixtures. The exterior wall was bumped out approximately two inches and properly insulated to prevent frozen pipes.

Framing was then completed for the two shower niches, corner bench and shower pan.

COORDINATING TILE & GRANITE: “We wanted our bathroom to feel like a warm and relaxing spa-getaway.” To achieve this look, the homeowners chose “Vetro Blanco” tile for their shower wall which contrasts beautifully with the tile used for the accent band and niches. The vertical installation of the shower tile and accent band not only adds visual interest to the shower, but also creates an illusion of height. The Shanxi Black Flame floor tile compliments the different
